Strength in numbers
When the new year begins, the Warriors are expected to address the shortage of strength and conditioning coaches for the athletic department and football program.
Since Mel deLaura’s departure in 2010, the Warriors have been without a fulltime football-only S&C coach. Of the 10 Mountain West football teams in 2012, UH was the only one without a FT S&C coach.
School — Number of teams — FT S&C coaches — FT S&C coaches for football
Air Force — 27 — 6 — 1
Hawaii — 21 — 2 — 0
New Mexico — 19 — 4 — 1
Fresno State — 18 — 4 — 1
San Diego State — 18 — 3 — 1
UNLV — 18 — 3 — 1
Boise State — 17 — 5 — 1
Nevada — 16 — 3 — 1
Wyoming — 15 — 5 — 1
Colorado State — 14 — 6 — 1
* * * * *
It was pretty surprising to hear of Chris Ault’s (third) retirement at Nevada. Good coach, better rival.
With Pat Hill gone, Dennis Franchione long gone, and Chris Petersen soon to be gone, maybe, UH is running out of good rival coaches.
First! Ohayo WB!
Wow, very telling statistics. Hope we get back up to par.
Ikei all day!!
Chad Ikei???
Hmmm…..
Former UH Warrior players (Kealoha Pilares, Brashton Satele, etc.) all swear by Ikei.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
IKEI, IKEI, IKEI!
0 for football, yet TWO for 21 athletic programs in total.
The number 2 for 21 is more concerning than the 0 for 1.
Besides other than Tommy Heffernan, who is the other full-timer?
When you look at it, its amazing what the athletic programs at UH have done and how the student-athletes in all the sports have performed and won various athletic accolades considering the LIMITED resources and the word “limited” is me being “nice”.
Remember a few years ago when there was a “hiring-freeze” in the department and that the essential areas for the student-athletes “wont be effected”… ummm… thank GOD its time to re-evaluated what the definition of essential is.
Would like to see UH get to figures around:
21-4-1 .. at LEAST.
21-2-1 is not adequate if we expect to be competitive in our programs.
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
As the saying goes – “Figures don’t lie but liars figure”. Do you think the $200K + could have been used more productively…go figure?!
Doesn’t seem to be any correlation between the number of S&C coaches and team standings.
Or any cause and effect outcomes.
looks like to stay par with the MWC the UH needs to have at least 4 full time S&C coaches.
who can make that happen at the UH?
Depends… I personally believe that our coaches at UH in various sports are some of the best in utilizing what they have to work with. The frustration is there. The red-tape, the promises made and nothing resulting in them, etc…. but yet they endure and succeed.
While this probably will go in one ear and out the other for most people.. just looking at what the non-football and non-basketball programs have been able to do with their modest resources in both budget and limited exposure in the win-loss and conference title scene for their respective programs I think is nothing short of amazing. The lower down the “money ladder” you go in our 21 sports, the more you are sure to find coaches and student-athletes that have no choice but to find the self-discipline and constructive “improvisation” to try to make up for short-comings other university athletic departments they compete against do not have.
So now, take all that and then boost it. Take that work-ethic and drive and give it the support it needs and what will you find? I think we know what we will find.
New AD Ben Jay is looking for new revenue streams. Some of those new revenue “paths” (some, NOT all) could very well be laying un-paved right on campus. We have 6 revenue programs.. who says we cannot have more? We have 6 programs that charge admission. We could have 7 or 9…. COULD. Of course, if admission were added to other programs, the justification would have to be a result of institutional and departmental support.
You cannot just slap on admission and expect people to pay. Its like trying to sell a used car. Sure the thing gets you from point A to point B, but you gotta make the thing look pretty (fix the oil leak, when was the last tune-up?, did you even wash the car?, what about the rust spots?, etc…) to attract potential buyers.
#8 and what about the extra mil they gave to the lawyers…that could fund another 2 coaches for 10 years
Coach Chow needs to use his connections to USC, Utah, UCLA in hiring a F/T Football S & C coach. I’m sure there are very capable assistant S & C coaches at those schools looking to move up.
Good morning everyone!
Wonder what the back-story is on why Mel deLaura’s FT position was not replaced for football. 😕
No excuse for not having more S&C coaches and definitely a sore spot in football…Was this another JD deficiency?
#11 all the non-revenue sports except for golf at the UH have been conference champions or close to it
@#14, SteveM: Was that a Stevie “pun”?
Is a bachelors degree, as well as NSCA certification required in order to be hired as a S & C coach at UH or any university?
Wasn’t Mel de Laura initially a “volunteer” coach when he came to UH in 99 from the mainland?
@#11, Kevin: I wonder if there is a way to allow “free” parking at UH if you show a ticket for any event. Maybe that is one way to generate more ticket sales. Parking now is $6, almost the price of a Zip Pak.
My brother suggested I would possibly like this website. He used to be entirely right. This post actually made my day. You cann’t consider simply how so much time I had spent for this information! Thanks!
Good Aloha Friday (Heading Into A Long Happy New Year Weekend) Morning Folks!
Long day at work…then a 9 day stay-cation! Yippee! I get to get clean my house like crazy for a week 🙂
Wishing everyone a safe and prosperous New Year…Go Warriors!
Oh yeah, Ikei rules!
Almost the price of a Zip Pac? Brah, that’s like almost HALF the price of a Zip Pac.. RIP-OFF!!!
But the parking office/department is completely separate from UH athletic department, so they will probably have to really sweet talk that kind of deal with the parking office.
Where one revenue stream disappears, it has to be made up and even if allowing UH athletic ticket holders free admission ever happens, the UH students and faculty and others will pay the price and the backlash will come as usual.
I really enjoyed this post you have written! Great way to add value to the blogging community.
RE: #17
Annoddah Dave — nah… just curious to know the “why” of what didn’t happen. You know how things get “set in stone” after a while… especially after a successful football era of which deLaura was a part.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Happy last Aloha Friday of 2012.
Gotta agree with Kevin – all his points. Great minds think alike. 😆
Parking revenue, as I understand it, goes to pay for the structure and operations. Even parking down at JABSOM is $6 (which is just a parking lot). At least it’s still cheaper than Blaisdell.
To whomever asked yesterday about Sam Biscaro: IIRC, ST said that Sam left the team but is still in school at UH. He’s from the Santa Barbara area, so not sure if he will transfer back there. Perhaps the blogmeister knows…
Welcome!

#10 – money talks!!!
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
Its been a while since I have been on here. Looking at the statistics of trainers to sports is bad compared to other schools. Hopefully AD Jay will be able to push for a FT S/C trainer for the football team. Happy Holidays and Go Warriors!!!!!
Going by the numbers, CSU should be THE stud and studdette University.
@Masaboy
What are the statistics of the trainers?
@#22, Kevin: LOL!, maybe that’s why I haven’t eaten a Zip Pak in years! Is not the parking an outsourced deal where they collect money to pay for the security, maintenance, ticket attendants, etc.? and some of the profit goes to UH? Students and faculty use it the majority of the time and probably park longer. The only time parking is free is when you are going to the box office to purchase a ticket. I am thinking the parking concession would still make money even if there were no sporting events in the “quarry”.
Oh, you probably meant ratio of trainers to sports.
Thanks , I’ve recently been looking for info approximately this topic for a while and yours is the best I’ve came upon so far. However, what in regards to the bottom line? Are you certain in regards to the source?|What i do not understood is in reality how you’re no longer actually much more neatly-preferred than you may be now. You’re so intelligent.
I’ve had four different discussions with four key leaders at the State Legislature about both capital and operating budget issues – not just at UH but also for environmental, social justice, and human services legislative proposals.
Unless there is an across-the-board revenue increase here in Hawai`i, there will be a priority list created. The top three right now are: early childhood education; increased human/health services for old people; core infrastructure repairs/improvements.
There are a number of legislators who believe that the University of Hawai`i System should not expect any significant increases in non-educational operational budget requests. Whether these folks prevail will not be known until after they are presented to the $$$$ and higher education chairs.
Because the State House has not yet organized and the State Senate needs to address new leadership matters, I assume that we will not be able to examine what is going to happen during the 2013 Legislature until the second week in January at the earlist.
I strongly urge that THE POWERS THAT BE outside the University of Hawai`i at Manoa who want to improve the financial situation within the Department of Athletics form a private sector fund-raising team which would include allowing (real) naming rights for programs and facilities.
Great task I like your design! Would genuinely like to right here your feedback on my website! I am also searching for someone to assist me make websites!
Whoops!!! earliest not earlist
@jimmy the lock
pretty much 10 sports per trainer..Makes you wonder what if we had 6 trainers like CSU or AF..we would be winning National Championships!!! haha
Chad Ikei
Is a great idea for UH Athletics! Go get Ikei!
@Masaboy
Has CSU or AF been winning National Championships? lol
chris ault is retiring.
Great Morning All!
jtl,
No. But they both beat Hawaii! 🙁
@#39, jimmy: if NCAA had sports in sheep head butting and falconry, I think these two would be right up there. Seriously, there is a need for more sports trainers as the speed and impact of athletics are causing more serious effects on athletes now and in the future.
Ault retiring?
Lemme save the trouble and wasted blogspace by saying this before multiple posts spawn from this:
“Hire Ault for OC”.
There. Done. Move on. Not gonna happen. Shut up.

We have learned that Chris Ault is stepping down at Nevada http://FootballScoop.com/the-scoop
i wonder then, if rolo will be actively seeking employment…?
i wonder then, if rolo would be a nice fit at manoa?
i wonder then, if rolo who was the last cut of the former staff would be considered if at all?
i wonder then, if rolo would be retained as oc with some authority in reno?
ST
How many Part-Time (PT) Strength & Conditioning (S&C) coaches does UH have?
I have an unopened pack of 1989 UH Football cards. They can go, free, to anyone who was on that team. Or anyone else, I guess.
Only football (UH sports) has violent collisions that are done purposely within the rules of the game, right? Just making sure.
@Annoddah Dave
I don’t think more sports trainers will reduce the number of “serious effects” on the athletes. Quality of the strength and conditioning is the key. I think Hawkpeter (sp?) alluded to that.
Got this from the UH Athletics site:
Strength and conditioning coach Tommy Heffernan heads the staff along with assistant Grant Steen and graduate assistants James Chassin, Kamalei Magnani, Mike Johnson and student assistant Ian Hasegawa.
Streaming coverage of the Chris Ault press conference to start at 11:30 a.m. HST: http://www.nevadawolfpack.com/allaccess/?media=359875
I believe James Chassin’s time is up. Two-year grad assistant took over for Kenny Esquivel two years ago.
I think there’s a direct correlation with 2011 and 2012’s performances and not having a full-time S&C coach. S&C is important to develop the team’s size and strength and a big part of getting bigger/stronger is to help prevent injuries. UH’s DL was very undersized (outside of Hanohano and Correa) going into the 2012 season.
Can someone explain why McMackin and Donovan didn’t bring in a full-time S&C or promote one of the other trainers???
Saying that UH didn’t have the funds is not an excuse, Mel’s old salary could have been applied to the new trainer.
And the reorg continues, congrats to Sen. Donna Mercado Kim as the new Senate president.
@Former UH Athlete
Can you explain how Rolo’s tweaks turned the R&S into mediocrity?
I thought going into the 2012 season there were some good sized interior d-linemen…injuries took a toll.
RE: 2009, UH Athletics Hiring Freeze
This article mentions that athletic trainer positions were actually addressed.
However it doesn’t specify what that meant. There are athletic trainers, people like Eric Okasaki who primarily treats injuries and then there are the S&C coaches which we have been talking about today, SOMETIMES referred to as “trainers”.
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2009/Feb/18/sp/hawaii902180408.html
Interesting that UH has more media relations full-timers (five) than conditioning coaches.
Howzit, Gang!
Wow! Some crooked numbers! Gotta agree with Kevin… it is truly amazing… the accomplishments of the various programs in Athletics, in relation to resources available. During earlier discussion about S&C coaches this season, I started typing something about hoping to see a “school-type program” specifically to train our keiki to be able to better compete, physically, at the next level. I think it was during a time when everyone was talking about the year-round programs going on in states such as Florida and Texas. And I’m not just talking about nutrition and sports, like in school P.E. We need to take this to another level, teaching and training to be more explosive. Sure, it may not be every kid’s or parent’s dream to pursue professional sports, but being more competitive in high school can help so many families in gaining college scholarships. Whatever paths they follow after that is up to them. At least we gave them the best chance we could, to get them started.
Sorry, didn’t mean to ramble on, but if we ever hit this lottery before moving back home, I’d like to have some sort of a plan! Hahaha!
Hope you all have a great day! 2012 is coming to a close… Stay safe this weekend!
Speaking of athletic trainers.. new regulations in effect starting 2013:
http://www.hawaiireporter.com/hawaii-state-to-begin-licensing-athletic-trainers/123
I wonder if these guys are going to apply for the Nevada-Reno HC job –
Duane Akina
Dirk Koetter (sp)
Mark Banker (?)
Rich Miano
Thery were all interested in Hawaii’s HC job ….
we shall see …
Its like you learn my thoughts! You seem to grasp a lot about this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something. I believe that you simply could do with some % to power the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.
Has both the WCO and Air Raid background that could be a nice fit with Hawaii’s offense.
http://www.arizonawildcats.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/anae_robert01.html
New Year Wish – UH will recruit Tiapepe Vitale of DeLasale HS. He is the best running back in California and seems to be off of all of the D1 recruiting plans. Maybe in the shadows of too many great teammates!
Big, quick and knows how to find the end zone frequently. Very difficult to tackle and a lot of knee and straight airm. (I am not related – just a longtime UH & DLS follower that wants to see this outstanding player stay in green!)
#46 good question…how many part time trainers are needed to supplement the full timers, and how many part time trainers would be considered a full time equivalent.
Wonder where Rolo ends up now. Head coach of Nevada? or hopefully back to Hawaii to help run the UH offense.
There was also a big visible difference from when Heffernan was the lead guy the first time from the former S&C coach.
One of the noticeable differences under Heffernan was that the grad assistant S&C guys working with the players much much earlier before practice started than before.
Some practice observers also remarked on this blog that the pace and routines were not as “laxed” with Heffernan as it was in the past.
Our best rival coach is our head coach.
De Laura is SMU S/C coach, and SMU pulverized Fresno State in the Sheraton Bowl. He must have done something good, SMU defense was too much for Carr and company.
Geeze, those teams that pulverized SMU must have done something good too.
Sounds like Ault came to his decision to retire somewhat unexpectedly…..just during this recruiting dead period…..while school is on break…..so probably unlikely that he spoke to the Wolfpack players and/or coaches (including Rolo) in-person beforehand.
http://www.rgj.com/article/20121228/SPORTS06/121228005/Watch-Ault-videos-including-one-from-his-news-conference-today
SMU Defense = the huge Estonian buggah. I think he may have pretty much been a “complete set” when he arrived on campus!
Kinda feel for Rolo…..having to deal with consequences of the 2nd “retirement” by the HC in 2 consecutive years.
Try wait…
Wea Peterson going? And wen?
Thanks man for this great article you posted. Can you tell me how you manage the website? Thanks!
@#64…yet another “al alterego” appears on the horizon.
SMU made 4 bowl games in a row, this season they had a totally rebuild OL and a new QB, and finished with a winning season. Most MWC teams would have suffered the same fate had they played Texas A & M and Baylor – UCLA found out how good the Baylor Bears are.
I thought you would at least give credits in the end of the article, you copied this one.
JJ always had a keen eye for getting good big rushing ends. Wonder if Hunt was a converted basketball player .
@#77, al: If I heard correctly on the game broadcast he was a track and field guy…I think discus.
Ran into Mrs. Ginlack, Bryson is doing well playing for his Japanese football team. Yay, Bryson!
Say what you want, but there is no denying that June Jones is a very good coach. The guy is a winner and the guy is a risk taker, his teams scores a lot of points, and he has a keen eye for good talented recruits. The way he coached at UH and SMU, and won after some of the worst football programs, ever, says it all.
And, I am proud of running around at old Cooke Foeld, running pass patterns with Mel DeLaura and catching some passes from Jones many moons ago when he was a Rainbow. Shows how old I am. Wish he was still with us and I think his heart is still with Hawaii.
Unquestionably believe that that you stated. Your favourite reason seemed to be at the internet the simplest factor to understand of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed at the same time as folks consider worries that they plainly do not recognize about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest and also defined out the entire thing with no need side effect , other people can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thank you
annodah dave…#64 and #77 is another “al”. you know that is not how i write.
oh well, be that as it may.
now i know how identity theft victims feel.
SMU’s “new” QB was a U of Texas transfer. Not much of a handicap.
#82 and #83
impostors trying to discredit other impostors. must be a first. nuff said.
UH athlete
Im beginning to think that your constant slander of Mack is that you prob never saw playing time under him or whats the deal??
Mediocrity of the R n S??? 2010 over 5000 yds passing n 42 tds and over 1100 yrs rushing n 24 tds?? then he loses 3 wrs and a rb to the NFL. only for the next year toi put up 4000yds passing 29 and 1200yds rushing and 22 tds??
Like ive said before bring facts to the table!
#80 were you there at the old honolulu stadium when jj was in the middle of a team brawl after a game?
Derek@80, used to workout with Mel DeLaura too a couple of summers getting ready for the season. Hal Stringert was there also. These two were nice guys that gave me a lot of speed & strength tips that were very good. The guy throwing to us was Elroy Chong. Guess I’m just a little on in age than you?
#85…false al again. okay, you wanna be me so bad. have at it…see you buddy.
.
Yup, “be that as it may” — now I’m confused.
not 👿
As fat loss factor reviews point out, there is a tough stage to get through first. This is the initial two-week detoxification stage. Many consumers would know this as
#52 who was the full time trainer for football prior to mel?
don’t think there was one.
jj hooked his buddy up.
from my observations at practice, many of the players lacked respect for mel. the players just went through the motions when mel conducted drills. jogging when they should be running 3/4 speed or walking the last 10 yards to the line. most of these slackers was the local boys, some of them starters.
2010 #2 in total offense?? sounds pretty mediocre to me!! 2011 42nd in total offense. 700yds from 20th and with all the injuries and new starters?!?!?
Who’s the real Al??? Hmmmmm.
#77 & 78….Hunt was a Junior Champion in shot put and discus in his native Estonia. Came to SMU to train for 2012 Olympics. SMU track was discontinued. Someone suggested he see JJ. Four years later, the guy is a projected first or second rounder. At 6″8, holds the NCAA record for blocked kicks. Great story.
I know!! Only the real Al can answer this question?
How many bets I have have I won against you?
Rocky Seto…we just need the kala. Excellent S&C Coach.
One that I know of.
Pretty interesting development with Ault. I’m thinking that a prior Wolf Pack coach will fill his shoes, such as Jim Mastro (RB coach at WSU) or Chris Klenakis (Oline coach at Arkansas). Depending on how Ault feels about Rolo, he might put in a good word.
I think Rolo would fit in well with Sonny Dykes, but I think he already has an OC at Cal.
Figure if Chow doesn’t replace Cal Lee, that would free up some money to afford a full-time S&C coach with a little kala left over.
I agree. Throughout the 80’s I wanted us to beat BYU. They have the Laie campus. many fans, recruit the same players–closest thing we had to an instate rival. When Lavell Edwards retired, somehow it didn’t seem the same when we won. The coach was the face of BYU football and whom the media interviewed.
To me, I wanted to beat BYU in general and Edwards in particular. We had nothing against BYU students or their campus. The last loss to BYU was just another loss–nothing extra painful for most. Same for most other schools now.
I never felt a rivalry with Boise–we had the same frustrating losses like to BYU, but not the same…I don’t know Peterson.
Chris Ault was another coach to beat. The “little general’s” expressions on the sideline in defeat were worth carrying in the binoculars. Same with Pat Hill– but he and JJ had a curious friendship and professional relationship and played exciting football– no “garbage time” when up by 40 points– any lopsided score was purely professional. No need to make excuses or apologies after. 🙂
Quite frankly, I don’t think anyone in the conference had much of a rivalry with Boise. They dominated year in and year out. If there was a rivalry, I would think TCU. Hawaii, Nevada and San Diego State have been the closest to a rival while they were in the WAC and MWC.
Speaking of Pat Hill, he would be a nice fit for Warrior new OC. Same system and pretty close in age. But I don’t think UH could afford Hill at this point in time.
UH actually has a very interesting history of S&C in football.
The Bible of S&C for football ‘The Strongest Shall Survive’, was actually written whilst Bill Starr was at UH. Many of the pictures published in the book were taken at UH, and are of UH players. Its still available for purchase.
Terry Albritton took over from Starr, another legend of strength development for athletics and one-time world shot put WR holder; then Curtis Tsuruda, DeLaura, then Heffernan. (Might have missed someone out)
Its not possible to explain in a blog entry the problems and challenges with S&C in modern football. It is worth noting though that there is an excellent history at UH to be recognized.
Ahh, hiring freeze in 2009… That was smart move.
#100 Shoko Sorry but you have the wrong Lee brother. Cal Lee was never retained by Coach Chow it was his older brother Tommy Lee.
I wonder if Rolo will be applying for OC job.
To identify the real “AL”, ask what he orders on his hamburgers.
Ask him how many pounds he lost. 😉
Ah, yea I get the Lee brothers mixed up.
I think Rolo has a good chance staying on as an OC with the Wolf Pack. I think it will depend on who the next coach will be and if he takes into consideration what Ault has to say. Although Ault said he was retiring, he said he will be involved in the hiring process for the next AD and his successsor.
If not, Rolo would make a good QB coach. He’s done well with Fajardo and his backup, Devon Combs.
Didn’t know that al was on the heavy side.
Or maybe he was diagnosed with type-II Diabetes like my Dad. He lost alot of weight when he changed his diet due to being diagnosed.
My name is Al. My name is Al. My name is Al. Number One – do you eat the tomato with yoyur hamburger? Number Two – do you put mustard on your hamburger? Number Three – Do you eat your hamburger with teriyaki sauce? Will the real Al please stand up?
@74. I had a feelin wasn’t you! Jus a pozerwannabe 🙂
@107 Tommui, bettah yet try ask how many mo808 has lost! 🙂
^^^ask the real Al that is!
Willie, those were the good ole days. Yeah, I remember Elroy Chong very well. He was pretty good. He was in a battle for starting QB with one Mike Biscotti. And remember those gold helmets during Dave Holmes’ era. Fans pretty much packed the old Honolulu Stadium. We sat in the end zone, just below the clock. I lived in an apartment with my friends at Varsity Circle so we just jumped over the fence to Cooke field and run around. And of course it’s a short walk to the stadium too. Too many good memories, and we were pretty poor too.
#109 shoko – I probably look heavier than AL.
Main ting is not whats on the outside, but whats on da inside. 😉
Thats whats good about blogs, you get to know the person, first, instead of judging by appearances. Good people and good fun is what draws me to this blog.
That, and of course, football!
Nite!
What’s wrong w/ Tommy Heffernan ????? I think he does an awesome job and is extremely knowledgeable …..
Coach Chow…I just read about Nevada Head Coach Chris Ault calling it a career…you need a replacement for Tommy Lee…can you say
NICK ROLOVICH !!!!!
Rolo to Temple?
Many forget that Kale Ane, the Punahou HC, was the S & C coach during the Bob Wagner years. Glenn Nakaya was his assistant.
Can Chow say Anae?
duffer wants to know where is Petersen’s going too.
#122,
To bed. Or as A-joe would say, “Petersen not going.”
Konbanwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!! :). Christmas and the week between Christmas and new year’s eve and New Year’s day, just the best. 🙂
I never place a former offensive line coach to run the offense! For example, the Chicago Bears named former Minnesota Vikings Offensive Line and Head Coach, Mike Tice, as their Offensive Coordinator! Simply, placing Robert Anae, isn’t the answer! Also, Anae was released from BYU as Bronco Mendenhall overhauled his Coaching Staff after BYU had a terrible season in 2009-2010-I think?! Let’s see if Rolo can coincide harmoniously with Norm Chow!
For anyone interested – the Warrior volleyball season opener on Friday @ BYWho will be televised on BYUtv. Saturday’s game will not be televised due to a basketball game. 😈
Hi, Neat post. There’s an issue along with your site in internet explorer, may check this? IE still is the marketplace leader and a large component of other folks will omit your great writing because of this problem.

Simply making sweeping generalizations using one example is not the answer.
Anae it is.
