8. CSUN def. Hawaii, 3-2
Amazing match; the recall of something in the way of loss being called weeks ago.
π
hahahaha well yeah, if you call 10 of them maybe 1 will stick.
What is the possibility that the Wahine could miss making the NCAA tournament if they don’t end up in 1st place in the Big West ?
4. only if they lose 6-7 more matches. Which is unlikely.
They will still have an rpi in the top 30 even if they lose two more, which is high enough for an at large bid.
Anyway something needs to change and needs to change NOW!! If it was me I’d bench Olevao and Uiato and Start Kastl and Higgins.
5 agree
Duiato or Diggins still under Dave’s command, it’s all Dave’s setting choices not theirs.
It hurts that all the hard work they did during the preseason to get in a position to host the playoffs just went down the drain.
I wouldn’t be so bothered if they played well and still lost, (as was the case against Washington last year), or even San Diego this year, I didn’t really think they played that badly that game and they outhit SD if I remember correctly.
Passing has gone south recently and I didn’t think UCSB’s serves looked all that tough. I hope they can bounce back from some adversity. At least for now if they can still finish at a minimum in a tie for the conference title if they win the rest of their matches.
Tai had 16 kills and 11 digs why in the hell would he bench her
Now the immediate question is: How will UH play against Davis? Davis is no slouch either…
Isn’t that what we wish for that Big West teams will get better? Now they are and beating UH. I remember reading an article about the coach saying that he does not want to complicate the offense because the team is good right now and solid. Not tonight.
I wonder what caused this free-fall from the beginning of the season? Other teams targeting their backs? Some players in a slump?
Whatever’s going on, two things are for sure: 1) UCSB & CSUN are not good teams, & 2) the Big West is not a good conference.
well seattle in december isn’t “that” bad … π
hawaii in 5th sets … not great this year … that’s what 0-3 …. hmmm …
Here’s the bottom line. 191 sets, 121 to Hartong and Olevao, 28 to Vorster and Adolpho. This is the biggest disparity ever.
8. 16 kills sure, but her hitting percentage was BAD, and has been bad all season.
Uiato has been too predictable, let’s see what Higgins can do to start a match and that might actually fire up Uiato to set the way she did when the season started.
12. Cubicle I am pretty sure the wahine beat Creighton in Wichita, in 5 sets.
13. Wow, just way too predictable and you can’t blame it all on the passing.
There were some instances where Uiato decided to go to Hartong/Olevao instead of the middles on decent passses and there were two blockers up and waiting for them.
12. they are 1-3 in 5 setters
5. it is not the coach’s choice where all the sets go. but have been saying for weeks that they are going to Hartong too much to bail them out.
Still, unless you are in Uiato’s shoes, you don’t know what she’s seeing in terms of the block on the other side.
One thing that is evident is they need someone else in serve-receive to take the passing pressure off Hartong.
Painful game to watch. I just wish Uiato would get more offense minded, at least twice a set. This would definitely freeze the opposition middles and open up the outsides. Wahine down, but not out…yet. GO BOWS.
Why are you people blaming Mita she follows the instructions of the head coach. It was his game plan not hers. The setters at UH have always been mico managed by Shoji.
Dani Mafua had no problems setting Amber Kaufman as much as she could, KK had no problems setting Prince as much as she could.
21. That’s not a fair comparison. Kanoe (or Shoji) set Prince because she was their biggest offensive weapon. Adolpho and Vorster are never going to produce the numbers and efficiency of Prince, regardless of who is setting. And Prince was smaller than these two. When Kanoe was setting 2003, she also set most of the balls to Kim and Lily, likely because of Shoji’s direction as well. Again, same thing with Kaufman. She was such a consistent attacker that Mafua (and Shoji) had the confidence to set her IF THE PASS allowed it. Also look at the passers from those teams: Prince’s seasons had Watanabe, Boogaard, Hittle/Fotu as passers, Kaufman’s seasons had Ka’aihue, Danielson, Otineru and Jayme Lee, while this year has Longo, Mendoza, Hartong and Olevao. You do the analysis.
IMO, the passing formation last season was better when Maeda and Croson were still part of it. Longo’s been a champ and Mendoza has done well, but Hartong and especially Olevao, are not exactly top-caliber passers. Hartong is a superwoman, but passing-wise, she is not as refined or consistent as a Kanani, Willoughby, Kahumoku, Otineru, Boogaard, Hittle, etc.
22. Stats say otherwise and Vorster/Adolpho arent padding their stats against wac opponents either! They just aren’t getting set enough period!!
IMHO, Shoji should know when to pull the plug on Olevao and bring Kastl. Sometimes it seems he brings Kastl in too late. Maybe he doesn’t have as much confidence in her, but when she comes in off the bench, she usually does well. And if Taylor is struggling, would it hurt to bring Goodman in? The last time they had a blow out match, Ginger Long had more exposure on the right than Goodman, a freaking senior and better blocker.
24. Yes, they are hitting for an impressive percentage, but can you honestly say they can carry the same responsibility as Prince did? Bottom line, can’t put all the blame on Uiato. It’s Shoji’s show to run. I do agree though that Higgins might need to see more time. Might do Uiato some good.
I believe I heard that there is another call the coach show on Monday.I wonder how many will call in.
I’ll call in. What time?
Usually 6 pm but I’m still checking if what I thought I heard was correct.
Just wondering why Emily would step in front of Longo to take a serve. Know opposing teams target her with their every serve, but would think that if a serve is heading to Longo she would take it and rest a little. Or is it a reflex thing where she’s just so used to getting served. I’m new at this game, so just wondered if there was some strategy to this .
i agree with all the comments with regard to shaking this team up…
change the setter with Higgins
change up the middles if needed
change the RS to Goodman put Taylor on the left
put kastl in sooner or start her
i don’t know what coach sees nor do i have the “expertise” he has… but if the common fan views /wants these changes… why can’t he ? something needs to be done…
as someone mentioned it’s not rocket science – teams know how to beat Na Wahine.
serve hartong, block hartong, serve tough, blah blah blah
i’m hoping they recover from this and Gel come post season – i know you ladies can do it!
Change the coach! Time for a change at the top with a new enthusiasm for the job. Better recruiting is needed as the talent level has plummeted in the last few years. Wahine are too small and too slow. History keeps repeating itself and year in and year out Shoji’s team struggles against the big block or teams that extend long rally’s!
How many times has changes not worked ?
Fascinating what’s allowed on this blog and what’s not.
Punishing the moderate (self-controlled) and an unconditionalizing free rein to the village dunce.
Funny/OUT
Shoji has in short instances had Taylor on the left and Goodman on the right when the set was under control. Taylor is hitting .310 this season mostly on the right when yes, she usually has one up, but I say start her on the left. I truly believe that if you’re a LS .280-.300 hitter you will keep that hitting pct the entire season. Taylor is that type of hitter, Olevao is not. Hartong has proved that hitting pct point, as she hit .287 last season and this season so far, even with a poor hitting pct the last match, she’s still hitting .284. Hartong is a true LS .280-.300 type hitter.
Leave things alone . Tai is doing a good job on the left she. had a double double. There is only one person to blame and the buck stops at his desk.
34. disagree. olevao is not proving to be a good 2OH and kastle IMHO is a better passer. she deserves a shot at starting. one other interesting combo is goodman on the right and moving taylor to the left.
thanks warriorfan — forgot about the creighton win π
Kastl is where she belongs she has had her opportunities and didn’t produce.
31. mei mei … change the middles … to who? Tuaniga came in briefly last night 0-1-1. not much of a chance to see if she could have changed things. you don’t have a lot of options there
34. no idea what you mean.
i’d like to see taylor get more swings from the left, even if she continues to be the opposite in the lineup card. taylor looks like the better bailout option, and olevao is a serviceable right side blocker. olevao could benefit from more one-on-one looks on the right side too.
36. LC. A double double in 5 sets. That’s at least a 35% opportunity to add to kills and digs compared to playing in 3 sets. A .154% hitting, 16-8-52 is not ok.
32. Oingo Boingo
coaching change? you must seriously be on something.
either that or you may actually be looking for the angry mob with pitch forks on the Warrior beat page
#39 Disagree don’t think she has been given a chance. Maybe you have been watching different
