  8. WarriorNY July 25, 2012 5:39 am

This is odd… There’s a stipulation that doesn’t allow teams on probation to take advantage of the Hawaii Exemption, right?

    You’d think O’Brien would know the rule…

“I’m working on changing the schedule where we can have a potential bowl game against a big-time opponent or the University of Hawaii to act as our bowl game at the end of the year,” O’Brien said.

  19. letsgowarriors July 25, 2012 6:27 am

if PSU re-schedules one of their opponents for a future season, they can then schedule an @Hawaii game for the 1st week of December.

  20. BigHiloFan2 July 25, 2012 6:31 am

    Good morning again Tsaikos everywhere.

Pomai, on the last post, there is a video that ST put up about Paipai and Edwards in Vegas and they representing Hawaii at the MWC media event. watch the video. at the end of the video there are what i call side shows. you click on each one and there is another video. there is a video of Jim Donovan doing the “cancellation” speech. there is another of Ms. Greenwood and Mr. Apple doing the “we’re putting them on paid leave and getting to the bottom of things” speech.

what i didn’t like about the Donovan video is it seemed like he was blind sided, not adequate preparation to keep quiet, hem and haw. especially the segment involving his reluctance to name Peyton.

i’m giving him the benefit of the doubt. but he gotta come out swinging, and i mean hitting hard. his nice guy demeanor is good for the WAC but it ain’t good enough for the SEC.

  21. Shoko July 25, 2012 6:32 am

If the game was initially planned prior to the violation that brought on the sanctions, the NCAA will allow teams to take advantage of the Hawaii Exemption. Such was the case with the USC game in 2010 where the game was being planned in 2001 prior to USC’s violations in 2004. In Penn State’s case, they can’t use the exemption because the violation occured recently prior to scheduling. At least thats the way I understand it.

Wonder who gave San Diego State a first place vote when they lost their startinf QB (Lindley) and top RB (Hillman). Just another indication how some sportwriter’s can be biased.

    Yes, 37 days and counting.

  22. Shoko July 25, 2012 6:37 am

Since New Mexico got 33 points, there must be some media folks that the Lobos are better than the Rebels.

  23. papajoe2 July 25, 2012 6:40 am

ST, to make money in Vegas you must cash out when you win big like that and not put it back into the machines. The machines are made to make the casino money. Send your winnings to me (cash only) and I will hold it for you.bwahahaha!

  27. Buffoman July 25, 2012 6:45 am

Hey, why don’t we petition the NCAA to make the last game of the season for UH and future probation teams an exemption; like a Monopoly get out of jail free card, only to be used once by the team on probation. That way, we can become know as the “Pass Go Bowl”. All tongue in cheek, of course. the NCAA is just a mess and can’t punch their way out of a wet paper bag, but they own the Monopoly board and folks like us are just fighting for a chance to step up beyond “Baltic Ave”.

  28. wafan July 25, 2012 7:06 am

    Good Hump Day!

  29. gigi-hawaii July 25, 2012 7:07 am

  31. wafan July 25, 2012 7:09 am

I guess the Warriors are still viewed as the other guys if they cannot schedule a big time program for a game.

Are we willing to prostitute ourselves?

  32. Ronnie July 25, 2012 7:11 am

Good morning! Long time no “see”. 🙂

From what I could find, it seems as if Penn State could schedule Hawai’i.

The sanction against Penn State – according to the NCAA site says:

The NCAA imposes a four-year postseason ban on participation in postseason play in the sport of football, beginning with the 2012-2013 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2015-2016 academic year. Therefore, the University’s football team shall end its 2012 season and each season through 2015 with the playing if its last regularly scheduled, in-season contest and shall not be eligible to participate in any postseason competition, including a conference championship, any bowl game, or any postseason playoff competition.

The sanction against USC – according to their appeal document says:

The institution’s football team shall end its 2010 and 2011 seasons with the playing of its last regularly scheduled, in-season contest and shall not be eligible to participate in any postseason competition, including a bowl game, following the season. Moreover, during the two years of this postseason ban, the football team may not take advantage of the exceptions to the limit in the number of football contests that are provided in Bylaw 17.9.5.2, with the exception of a spring game as set forth in Bylaw 17.9.5.2-(a).

    Bylaw 17.9.5.2 is the Hawai’i exemption…

  33. mo808 July 25, 2012 7:12 am

Good Morning! Woohoo! ST, I agree take the money and run! Have a great day everyone!

  34. wafan July 25, 2012 7:13 am

Someone asked on an earlier post about football attendance.

Even in down years their fans will continue to buy season tickets and show up to cheer their team to victory. The Hawai’i “fan” will merely whine and complain.

At least this is what I have observed with the PNW teams.

  35. Da kine warrior fan July 25, 2012 7:16 am

  38. mikey July 25, 2012 7:42 am

on a different note. Congrats to the nanakuli-maile little league state champs who will be heading to San Bernadino to play in the Western Regionals and if they win there head to the world series. Figured id give them a shout out since it is no where in the news or papers. Congrats to those kids!!!

  39. Warrior Dave July 25, 2012 7:43 am

    #31 Wafan,

I don’t think of the final game against a name opponent like PSU prostituting ourselves. It’s a win-win, especially for UH fans to see a “name” opponent come to Aloha Stadium and play.

  40. hapahaoleboy July 25, 2012 7:54 am

One thing to remember with Penn State scheduling a last game in Hawaii is that it just can’t be a 13th game. However, they could drop a game from their schedules and make Hawaii their 12th game each season. Makes sense to drop some weak non-conference opponent in the early weeks of the season to make a trip to warm Hawaii in December….

  41. papajoe2 July 25, 2012 7:58 am

Bottom line is the Hawaii exemption is for other teams playing a 13th game in Hawaii in a 12 game regular season. If PSU wants to play in Hawaii, they must drop one of their opponents and play Hawaii for their 12 game regular season and not a 13th.

  42. papajoe2 July 25, 2012 7:59 am

hhp, that’s what I was trying to say but took me 1/2 hour trying to type it with 1 hand. 🙂

  43. misterfudge July 25, 2012 8:02 am

If Penn State can’t get the Hawaii exemption it makes no sense for them to come. Can’t afford to give up the profits from a 105,000 attendance home game when you’re paying off $60M in fines and forfeiting Big Ten television receipts.

  44. Wes'side Warrior July 25, 2012 8:05 am

Howzit, everyone! Good Media Day for us. No unwanted surprises.

    Media Guide is sweet.

    Sweeter yet? Those 4 Aces!

  45. Wes'side Warrior July 25, 2012 8:09 am

According to the wording posted by Ronnie, scheduling Penn State for a regular season game should be okay. The Hawaii/Alaska Exemption is definitely NOT specifically mentioned as being off the table.

And slightly off on a tangent…

Bryant Moniz is up for AFL MVP for Week 20!!! Go Vote and support him!!!

    http://www.arenafootball.com/news/who-should-be-national-guard-mvp-week-20

  46. Aaron July 25, 2012 8:10 am

Penn State can still play here without using the exemption. it’s the best they can do without a bowl game…

  47. Abunai July 25, 2012 8:12 am

    Morning all.

  48. lowtone123 July 25, 2012 8:14 am

Also looking forward to Anthony Robbins keynote conversation tomorrow, if I manage to find the dwelling!!!

  50. WarriorNY July 25, 2012 8:22 am

    Thanks for the post Ronnie…

I was under the impression that last year when Ohio State was rumored to do something similar with the Hawaii, it was shot down quickly because the NCAA was not going to allow it. I was under the impression that the stipulations of the Hawaii Exemption were changed after Alabama took advantage of it…

I don’t think there is much financial incentive for Penn St. to come to Hawaii if it is a 12th game…

  51. wafan July 25, 2012 8:30 am

Happy birthday Jodie, even if your dad might have forgotten!

You know he is still excited by his win with 4 aces.

  52. Warrior Dave July 25, 2012 8:31 am

PSU would travel well and brings lots of their fans. Hawaii Visitors Bureau must be excited.

  53. organizational leadership July 25, 2012 8:33 am

Also looking forward to Stephen Pierce keynote conversation tomorrow, if I manage to find the building!!!

  54. Ronnie July 25, 2012 8:38 am

    Hi WarriorNY,

According to the NCAA “Public Infractions Report” for Ohio State, the Hawai’i Exemption was also explicitly stated:

The institution’s football team shall end its 2012 season with the playing of its last

regularly scheduled, in-season contest and shall not be eligible to participate in

any postseason competition or take advantage of any of the exemptions provided

in Bylaw 17.9.5.2, to include an end-of-season conference championship game.

The blurb for Penn State was from the NCAA website, but the bylaw may be included in the “Public Infractions Report” once it comes out. It will be interesting to see if the bylaw is cited….

  55. WarriorNY July 25, 2012 8:39 am

    Ronnie,

    Thanks for the clarification!

  56. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 25, 2012 8:41 am

“a big time opponent or the University of Hawaii…” aww, sad.

  57. papajoe2 July 25, 2012 9:01 am

The way I look at it is, if its their 12th game, it doesn’t count as an exemption. Since their future schedules must be complete, they must drop a game or make a deal with someone on their schedule to reschedule them at another year or pay them off and help them get another opponent or both. With 107,000 in attendance at their home games, they could easily afford to come here. Just read what Lou Holtz said about why schedule Hawaii. It would morally build their program after almost being knocked out.

  58. management training courses July 25, 2012 9:11 am

I Like the keynote where Bruce Springsteen talks about Elvis, Bob Dylan along with ‘blue balls’ in the SXSW keynote speech. Instant classic. If only Tony Robbins could do a keynote like that.

  61. SteveM July 25, 2012 9:26 am

    Good morning everyone!

I agree there is no financial incentive for Penn State to travel to Hawaii. But there is a psychological incentive for the players and fans….and they would probably stay a week. Never can tell…

    Hi Ronnie… long time!

  64. A-House July 25, 2012 9:29 am

I believe if Penn State can schedule a game in Hawaii over the next 4 years it will benefit both schools – UH/Hawaii, for all the PSU fans spending losts of $$$ and for Hawaii fans to see PSU – for Penn State, it is a mechanism to keep/attract players; for most of them it will be there only trip to Hawaii.

IS IT WORTH IT?? Hell yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  65. jm2375 July 25, 2012 9:31 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Happy Birthday Jodie!

  66. Derek July 25, 2012 9:33 am

Good for Scott Pagano that he got a scholorship and chose Clemson. But, I have to ask how can a young man who was only honorable mention last season go to being a 4 star prospect on Scout.com. Was he overlooked? Was he injured part of last season? Did he just get big all of a sudden? Did he wow recruiters at football camps? Or is he just a late bloomer? Or, is he just overrated? I don’t know, but it is very interesting how his senior season will shape out and I for one am wanting to see him a few times at least on OC16 this coming season.

  67. al July 25, 2012 9:34 am

when you hold the marbles you can do a lot of things out of the ordinary.

ask/require penn state that they must guarantee the purchase of 10,000 tickets.

the payoff would be $200,000 (only)

cancellation will result in a $800,000 buyout or four stevie wonder blunder deposits.

Is it worth it to add a 13th game this year if the team is 6-6 going into that game? A severely wounded Penn State team is still a dangerous team. This year’s team needs the extra practices allowed by participating in a bowl game.

    wam,

Maybe holdup on the 15 extra practice talk til after the 5th W.

Frankly, the regular season schedule could use any and all help it can get this season. A PSU game may draw as big a crowd as the Hawaii Bowl!

p.s.- I wonder what the PSU MBB and WBB schedules are like around then?

  76. A-House July 25, 2012 10:26 am

New head coach and staff with a new offensive and defensive systems – what’s the best way to approach preparing the players?

put in as many as they can handle effectively or use a reduced number of offensive plays with multiple formations and run varations off each – I would start with “student body right” and “student body left” until the opponents defense stops it – then run the same play with a pass option by the QB or RB.

ah, being an “arm chair” coach is so much fun!

  77. al July 25, 2012 10:26 am

    wam…two things.

one, we may not even get to 6-6 or better.

two, like d1 said psu-uh would out draw any hawaii bowl game

three, psu would bring a huge contingent that’ll spend huge amounts in hawaii

four, we’d have nothing to lose, because we’d be expected to lose and should we win…

The 6:00 news did a story on him last night. Pagano had academic difficulties year, and was flunking classes. He was suspended from the team as a result. He decided to take control of his life and not miss an opportunity for a good education. He buckled down on his school work, he now has a 3.5 GPA , and was brought back on to the team.

He went from a flunky to a role model in a year and a half. Now he gets the attention he deserves, and now he will now get a great education, good for him.

If only he was staying home at UH…… Auwe !

I agree with the other posts saying that Penn State would have no problem scheduling a season-ending game at Hawaii provided that it was only Penn State’s 12th regular-season game. Also I don’t see this happening in 2012 as everyone’s schedule is already set for the coming year, or in 2013 as UH already has season-ending games lined up against Army and BYU. But a Penn State-UH game could be scheduled for December 2014 or December 2015.

If Penn State had not accepted the package of NCAA sanctions announced Monday, the Nittany Lions faced a historic death penalty of four years, university president Rodney Erickson told “Outside the Lines” on Wednesday afternoon.

In a separate interview, NCAA president Mark Emmert confirmed that a core group of NCAA school presidents had agreed early last week that an appropriate punishment was no Penn State football for four years.

Talk about looking over your shoulder.

CFB Live reports that PSU Board of Trustees meeting this afternoon to discuss if the school President had the capacity to accept the punishment w/out going to the Board first!

We can’t blame Hawaii kids for wanting to go to away to a big school. Sometimes local kids have to go away to really appreciate everything Hawaii has to offer. That being said, there is nothing like staying at home and playing in front of family and friends.

We need to let them know that you can get just as good an education at UH as anywhere else, and that UH can provide the opportunity to take it to the next level after graduation. If you work your butt off, good things will come of it. These guys made it…

    Davone Bess

    Raphael Cherry

    Jason Elam

    Nuu Faaola

    Blaine Gaison

    Leo Goes

    Alex Green

    Reagan Mauia

    Kealoha Pilares

    Pisa Tinoisamoa

    Lopaka43,

Thanks for the info. On second thought some of the fines should go to the NCAA to help fund more investigations on the big schools who are getting away with so much. Pay this investigators well and if schools tries to bribe them givae them the death penalty. No program for that sport for 10 years. Coaches to be ban from coaching for 10 years too for major infractions. Don’t let the coaches be able to leave one program and create more dirt for another. Baggage always with these type of characters.

  125. Chawan Cut July 25, 2012 1:49 pm

All Penn St. needs to do is reschedule one of their future opponents to add Hawaii on their schedule.

2013: Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Virginia, Syracuse

    2014: Akron, Temple, UMass, Rutgers

    2015: Temple, Buffalo, Rutgers, TBD

    2016: Kent State, Temple, Pittsburgh

Hawaii looks a lot more attractive on the schedule versus Kent State, Akron, Buffalo, etc. Funding won’t be a problem for the school as their looking at paying off the $60 million in four installments. Shoot the school raised some $125 million in donations last year alone. Money won’t be a problem sending the team over for one week in Hawaii.

  126. Shoko July 25, 2012 1:58 pm

Not to mention an added incentive for players to stick around instead of transfering. Bribe them with a trip to Hawaii! 😉

  127. Shoko July 25, 2012 2:00 pm

Was reading the student-athlete handbook and it makes no mention of a 72-hour deadline to suspend a player. Only thing I noticed was a 72-hour deadline to appeal to the AD once he/she is suspended, 14 days to appeal to the Vice Chancellor and 24 hours to notify the coach from the time of arrest. Unless it changed recently. This is getting strange now.

  128. Shoko July 25, 2012 2:01 pm

Has Penn State ever played in Hawaii?

  129. earl tanaka July 25, 2012 2:01 pm

Clemson is an odd choice. Including Hawaii, Scott received scholarship offers from 47 schools. I mean a “who’s-who” list of D1 football. Well, Alabama, USC and Stanford didn’t come calling, but everyone else did, including teams like LSU, Arkansas, Tennessee, Oregon, Washington, etc. 47 schools. But he chose Clemson, a school in South Carolina and situated out in a rural environment. Is there a Hawaii connection out there?

  130. Shoko July 25, 2012 2:03 pm

Nevermind, apparently Penn State played in the Aloha Bowl in 1983.

Last night on TV sports news, I think it was Chris Tanaka or Mike Cherry, who said

Pagano chose Clemson because he had relatives in the area.

  139. Bowwar July 25, 2012 2:41 pm

Dunnache is not showing much smarts by having this lawyer “threaten” the UH…He should concentrate on getting his client relieved of the DUI charge. As #122 indicated, Dunnache can be let back on the team and NEVER see the field. Dunnache needs to “man-up” if he’s guilty and take his punishment, otherwise, plan on enjoying his long vacation back home.

  140. Bowwar July 25, 2012 2:51 pm

  145. Buffoman July 25, 2012 3:59 pm

Wow, that young man from down under is certainly making a lot of fans. Apparently he has not felt the vibe of the islands where as #141 stated, you need to man up. If he’s worried about his potential career, well should have thought about that before getting caught.

Getting the attorney to take care this is like calling out somebody for scrap as one kid, get your a__ kicked and go home tell pop one different story for get him for tell one bigga family member clean up your mess. Brah, when you lose one scrap by calling out somebody, man up, you own this, no go call somebody for clean up. We used to call dat chicken sh__.

That scrapping thing is old school. Today you get arrested for dat stuff. Too bad, had great lessons learned in those events, even when I lost more than I won (I no lie, my record was bad, but I enjoyed participating.).

  146. BigHiloFan2 July 25, 2012 4:33 pm

ok, i’ll ask da question. who is da lawyer?

da press dat Coach Chow is getting, i would not want to volunteer to scrap da Doc.

i don’t care if his degree is in philosophy. it ain’t gonna be a fair fight, he’ll beat da crap outta me because he’s fighting for principle and the team principle. and i’ve had my share of being in da whites as well as having da crap pounded outta me. nope, dis idea of an injunction sounds like a lolo idea to me.

  148. RedZone July 25, 2012 4:38 pm

His lawyer was on the news and said that UH can not suspend Alex according to the handbook. He wants coach to come up with some kind of creative discipline for the player while keeping the player on the team.

I guess coach could have him sit under a tree in time out during practices.

  149. kawika49 July 25, 2012 5:01 pm

I give up. Let him come every 3 days for a p i s s test, and he can attend; but not participate, till his case is ajuditcated.

Same rule applies for the others that are under similar circumstances.

  150. tommui July 25, 2012 5:15 pm

#146 BHF2 Paul Cunney is the attorney.

Friend Leloy, I was just poking fun

Whether the attorney is right or not as far as the technicality is concerned – 72 hours or whatever – I would not have advised Alex to rely on it.

Assuming that he was correct, what do you do to follow up – get an injunction forcing the coach to play him?

I would venture to say that this would be compounding the error.

In the case of Shutter, at least he was man enough to accept the mistake he made and accept the punishment that goes with it.

Those older poker machines usually pay, except all those “mature” ladies are always playing on them. I thought you weren’t suppose to take pictures in a casino, or did they change that rule?

  152. Kaneohe Resident July 25, 2012 5:17 pm

    Regarding the Penn State punishment:

Why has a crime resulted in NCAA punishment? No NCAA rules were broken. I read this somewhere on the internet and I think the writer has a valid point. The current athletes had absolutely nothing to do with the crime.

Punishing instituions instead of inviduals doesn’t make sense to me. An instituion doesn’t make decisions, individuals do. Why weren’t the individuals fined instead of the university? Hold individuals accountable, take all their assets then ban them for life from any collegiate endeavor.

  153. Kevin July 25, 2012 5:34 pm

    Kaneohe Resident,

Its just an illusion to give the public an idea that the NCAA is in control.

They are not. Look at Conferencemania and all the BS that came out of it and all the programs suffering because of it.

This was their chance to slam down sanctions as if it was a recruiting violation. They have delusions of grandure thinking they can levy sanctions on something much more serious than some recruit getting their wallets fat.

The NCAA and it’s shot-callers have no business trying to set a precendence over BCS programs about how football shouldnt be more important over education or the protection of individuals. They are hypocrites that stood by and let the conferences dictate the futures of other “innocent” student-athletes at programs and schools that aren’t part of that tax bracket.

So now they use this whole Penn State thing to try to remind the people that their “bark” has a bite.

Some chose to believe this lie.

    Ho. Ho. Ho.

Thanks for the info Tom Mui. so all things considered, and I consider Mr. Cunney a competent attorney in the DUI district court arena, and in the ADLRO world, and

would acknowledge he can accomplish a fair result if there is a fair result to be accomplished for our Aussie lad, and I am pulling for our Aussie lad, so….

maybe, just maybe, Mr. Tachibana’s attorney Mr. McPherson can get to hit his nail at da highest spot and take a signal from Mr. Cunney.

but thats challenging the coach. the coach says no drink and drive, and then bam bam get two more guys getting hit by both ADLRO and Dist. Ct., 2 different adjudication systems, plus the bad publicity.

i get the feeling that IWWTHM 122 has figured out the end result. oddawize, i can see

a favorable ruling for da Aussie in court. 😆 😆 2 stars.

talking about shooting for the future. Akoakoa Paleka Kennedy. He’s going JC this year, just graduated KS Keaau. Arizona Western I think. His friend from KS Keaau also went the same route, and he just got a scholarship from Baylor to play center for them. Akoakoa won the State’s heavyweight wrestling championship these past 2 years in a row. he lost 25 pounds plus each year, after football season, to make weight to wrestle. he missed a coupla metes but still won State champ. hope UH checks him out, maybe line him up for the future.

  176. Guava July 25, 2012 10:53 pm

From what I’ve been reading, I guess the point to it all is Alex Dunnachie will never again be the punter for the University of Hawaii football team. I mean you’re a player that got arrested for drunken driving, and you allowed your attorney to rip on the coach publically. At the root of it all, the kid screwed up less than a day after Norm Chow had a “come to jesus” team meeting regarding conduct off the field, after two previous DUI arrests (Schutter & Tahcibana).

I totally get the message Chow is trying to send to both his team and the community. Seems the 4 game suspension handed down to Cayman Schutter did not have the desired effect. Two more followed, I get it, I understand it, dang, I think I agree with it to tell you the truth.

In fact, from what I’ve read that Mr. Tsai has reported, technically speaking anyway, Dunnachie hasn’t yet been officially suspended. It’s my understanding, that like he did with both Schutter and Tachibana, coach is waiting for Dunnachie’s hearing date (August 3rd), then he’ll officially hand down punishment.

    Is that not simple enough?

  177. bowwar July 25, 2012 11:02 pm

If Dunnache can’t “man-up” to his misdeed, then he’s definitely NOT a Warrior and I wouldn’t want him as a teammate or representing this State. Offer to send him to Donkey-land so he can get his pro contract, who gives a rip…He’s history in my books.

  178. Guava July 25, 2012 11:09 pm

@ bowwar: my friend, i think I kind of agree with you. “Man Up” is the key here. Shoot, we all make mistakes, we’ve all had second chances, but that all starts with owning up to one’s responsibilities, or lack there of sometimes.

laura beeman’s late start on recruiting is starting to show dividends. two more recruits to be announced.

gib arnold’s a patient man as he is still awaiting one or two more late developing scenarios.

re: Penn State as a possible opponent

I don’t really care if UH wants to schedule Penn State 5 years or so from now. Until then, they’re “tarnished” goods and are a pale shadow of the school they once were. Please don’t say it’s a win-win to play them or that they are a “big name”. Not any more. I don ‘t want UH to associate with them in any way shape or form. And for those who say we need to play them for the money, gimme a break.

  181. K-Bay July 25, 2012 11:40 pm

    al,

    Still Two?

Even if Aaric to attend prep school?

    IF he’s “close enough” that he submitted to NCAA Clearinghouse, “maybe” only one or two classes short;

Or a few SAT Points short; then “could” become eligible with Next SAT Re-Take or one semester?

IF Still Two, I like our odds of shoring up shooting/quick forward or point guard positions…By September/August OR Mid-Term (sim.to. Orel)…

    How’s Roop’s ankle?

  182. al July 26, 2012 12:30 am

    aa is a pipe dream.

i believe there are others on the list.

desparately in need of a pg, but, if none then best athlete available even if its a redshirt/transfer.

i think he did well with the latter theory landing standhardinger in the late stages.

  183. al July 26, 2012 12:31 am

roop might be on the court this week. high ankle sprains take awhile.

  184. K-Bay July 26, 2012 12:45 am

    Maybe Futures…

IF Aaric’s two younger brothers can learn fom their brother’s plight and get off to a better, earlier start on the right classes, grades and test scores…IF they’re good enough…
