UH reaches out to students
Last night, UH athletic department officials met with leaders of UH student groups in a forum to rebuild relationships.
At the heart was UH’s search to make its sporting events more student-friendly. The students voiced suggestions such as improving the bus schedule between the campus and Aloha Stadium, and exploring the possibility of offering child-care services for students with families.
Football coach Norm Chow made an impassioned speech, punctuated with a video of the University of Pittsburgh fans who sing their version of “Sweet Caroline” between the third and fourth quarters. Here’s a video of the Pitt fans: Pitt video.
Dave Shoji also delivered a strong speech.
Despite the charging a student fee that includes access to UH sporting events, student attendance dwindled significantly at UH football games in the second half of the 2012 season.

Chow will be a guest on ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” segment on transfers. It will air on Sunday. It was previously reported it would air today.
It is a familiar subject for Cbow, who has shown a willingness to accept transfers at UH.

Happy birthday to Shauna Goya, who was part of our Warrior Beat video show.

And happy birthday to Myki. (I think I got the right date this time.)
Decided to come out of lurking. Couldn’t resist being first.
Happy birthday, Myki!
And good morning!
So ST, any prediction on the USC game?
Thanks for the heads up, Stephen. Going set the DVR now. Heard Shauna’s doing well at ComPac. Good for her.
And just a quick look at Rockne Freitas. Freitas played college football at Oregon State University and was drafted in the third round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1972 season. Dr. Freitas holds a Ph.D., and MEd in education from UH-Manoa and BS in animal science from Oregon State University. His doctoral research focused on developmental systems and guidelines for drug prevention, education, monitoring and counseling for intercollegiate athletics.
bleedgreen:
I saw an item yesterday that USC got commitments from a third of Scout.com’s top prospects.
Clyde:
They’re actually shooting it at 7 a.m. I guess they’ll edit it into the program.
Happy Aloha Friday!
Insomnia . . . again.
Tsigh.
Happy birthday to Shauna!
Whoo-hoo!!!
And, another happy birthday this year to Myki!

Happy Birthday Shauna.
Happy birthday to Shauna and Myki!
Bleedgreen: mahalo for the info on Rockne. Did not know he had a Ph.D. Wow, what a smart dude! And not only that, he was also an NFL player. Can’t get any better than that.
It’s a brand new day, folks. Make the most of it.
SteveM: yeah, I love elegant dining. No can help. That’s the way I am. Lol. Can’t wait til I experience my first cruise for that reason.
Happy birthday to Shauna and Myki.
Read an articles in the Dallas morning news yesturday but forgot to mention it; 5star WR-Ricky Seals-Jones, recieved death threat(s) after decommitting from Texas-Longhorns.
Getting ugly in college sports.
Went grocery shopping yesturday and for the 1st time since 2004…..it was pretty humid to the point where I could actually feel the strain of breathing the air…can you say, heavy?
Hey ST Nation. Just moved to San Antonio couple days ago and I am going to an AFL game tonight and I was wondering are there any Warriors on the San Antonio Talons or the Arizona Rattlers? Lemmie know.
Also happy belated BIK.
morning gang!
happy birthday Myki !!! tell SJ i said howzit
Hilo-Warrior: Don’t know if there are any Warriors on those teams, but do know there is at least one other TSAIKO in San Antonio. Perhaps, you two can meet. SteveM would have more details.
Mctruck: Too bad you don’t live in Hawaii. It’s low 70s at night and mid 80s at mid day with a little humidity here.
Howzit, everyone!
Happy birthday to the Birthday Gurlz!
Hilo-Warrior, Ray Hisatake is on the Talon’s roster. They got a Wes Mauia on da team, but from CA.
http://www.sanantoniotalons.com/roster/
Didn’t see any familiar names on the Rattler’s roster.
http://azrattlers.com/2012team/
ok sweet thanks. I should have looked at the rosters as well. But I am adjusting to TX time and its not going so good. Its now eleven and it feels like 6a for me.
Hau’oli la hanau, myki!!!
Good morning, gang!
Happy birthday, Shauna! Thanks for your work on the Warrior Beat video shows.
hi ho, hi ho….
Bleedgreen: hubby said that Rockne played for Detroit, not Pittsburgh!
As a reminder…
Our Georgia Chaptah of Tsai-kos will be hosting a tailgate in the “peanut” parking lot starting around 4pm tomorrow, in advance of the game between the Georgia Force and the Pittsburgh Power.
For this final regular season home game, they are running a Fan Appreciation promo, so all sideline seats (except for the $100 ones) are $20 each, while all Endzone seats are $10 each! Super deal!
Hope to see some last minute, unannounced Warrior Green join us, as we cheer for former Warriors… the Force’s QB, Bryant Moniz, and the Power’s WR, Mike Washington!
Game starts at 7pm. Doors open at 6pm.
The Arena at Gwinnett Center.
A couple of visitors are expected to join us for a bit during the tailgate… Senior Director of Team Operations of the Georgia Force, Andy Haskell, and local writer for the Examiner (.com), Mike Delrio. Here’s a taste of what he covers:
http://www.examiner.com/article/force-and-power-meet-afl-action-saturday-at-the-arena-at-gwinnett-center
Hi, Rocky Freitas was drafted by the Stealers, but played the majority of his NFL career with the Lions. Then I believe a few years with Tampa Bay.
Steelers, not Stealers…. sorry
CE: mahalo for the clarification, though hubby said he does not recall Rockne playing for Tampa Bay.
Unbelievable 2012. I didn’t think nothing could beat Jim Bolla when he was HC for UH basketball with many girls defecting his team. 4 defectors from mens BB. I don’t think this has ever happened at UH. And what if Vander decides to stay in Angola? Pulls a Jonas Umlaught? Losing the forwards and the guards can be rectified but the center position without Vander is near impossible to replace. And who would have thought that 3, not 1, football players would be cited for dui WITHIN 4 months? And Jim Donovan, not Herman Frazier, would be forced to take administrative leave? Some bad Kahuna going on? I fear JD will not be retained as AD. He never told the higher ups about the Stevie Wonder concert? I don’t think they will forgive JD and in light of the $250,00 that was given to the phony promoters. If I was JD, hire Michael Green fast. I think the DUI’s are forgiveable. First time offenders for all 3. We all make mistakes, and these 3 are young men. Yes getting behind the wheel of a car drunk could get themselves or someone else killed. But these are young men and yes they did a foolish thing but they will learn from it and become better human beings. Auwe, what next? Norm Chow defecting after the USC game for an NFL position? Just kidding.
CE: I guess I’ll google for more info.
Happy Birthday to the youngest Tsaikette on the blog…myki!
Have a wunnerful day sweet lady, and thank you for your friendship.

And Happy birthday to MYKI – a great lady!
(Who’s the guy holding a camera? 🙂 )
And to Ms Goya – happy birthday.
The Rock was a standout player too – All Pro for Detroit Lions.
Re #39 -Chiefgator
If Keoki Kerr is to be believed in his Hawaii News Now, he states that:
“Associate Athletic Director Carl Clapp signed the contract with local promoter Bob Peyton on behalf of Donovan, who was out of town when the contract was signed, a source said.
UH lawyers reviewed the concert contract and approved its language, according to the source.
A source added that UH Vice President for Budget and Fiscal services and Chief Financial Officer Howard Todo authorized the wire transfer of $200,000 in UH athletic department funds to Epic-Talent, a talent agency in Miami, money the UH has been unable to recover. ”
I would say if Keoki is to be believed, the upper campus people KNEW of
Stevie Wonder concert – the UH lawyers reviewed the contract and one of the UH VPs authorized the transfer of the moneys.
I suppose (re: #48) if we could get a list of those who bought tickets, whether anyone in Upper Campus bought tickets!
I get the general impression – and I hope I am wrong – that the Powers-that-Be are trying to put the entire blame on the Athletic Department for the Wonder-Blunder.
Watched the USA basketball game against Dominican Republic last night. Although this squad is a bit more athletic than the original Dream Team. Kobe Bryant is out of his mind if he thinks his squad is better.
Somebody necessarily assist to make significantly posts I would state. That is the very first time I frequented your website page and so far? I surprised with the analysis you made to make this particular publish amazing. Fantastic activity!
scheduling of arizona makes more sense now. also this is good for UH since it opens up more nonconference games with pac12 schools.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8163297/pac-12-big-ten-conferences-call-football-partnership
@Hale Ikena CC pre-attendees whose event was canceled
Just basing my comments on what was posted. I post what others may think, no harm. Not really versed with CC protocol and found it odd that main communication for attendees is through the blog. I have no desire to attend CC’s or outings. It seems I’m not the only one who feels that way. That’s just how I am.
Have a good weekend.
@Pauoa Boy
Even with Mullin and Laettner the Dream team was way way way better!
koakane…what’s in your coffee?
today is friday. hmmmmm.
i thought someone was joking about not knowing rockne freitas’ background.
Good Morning Gangeez!
For a VERY special lady –
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MYKI!
Been told Chow’s segment will air on Sunday.
Go with your gut instincts. If we can’t trust our own thoughts then who can we trust?
expecting any arrivals besides grimes this weekend?
One day at Aloha Stadium . . .

Good morning Tsaikos!
Happy Birthday myki & Shauna!!
chiefgator – get your facts straight before opening your mouth and sticking your foot in it.
Jonas Umlauft’s original intent was to only stay *ONE* year. We’re lucky he stayed for 2. AND despite being offered HUGE pro contracts, he has retired from volleyball and is focusing on his engineering studies.
Guaranteed tickets to the USC game on Sept. 1 @$50 each (no waiting or priority lists); sit with fellow Warrior fans with MUCH better seats in Sec. 2 adjacent to visiting teams Sec. 1.

Good morning everyone!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MYKI !!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHAUNA !!!
Good morning I watched the Kamehameha and Farrington game at the old Honolulu Stadium along with 26000 fans with Freitas part of that huge Kam offense line on Turkey Day. Bob Apisa for Farrington still got his yards.
Yes Freitas played for the Lions.
Good morning all! Thanks to all for the BD wishes. Grateful for another year and looking forward to enjoying number 74! I’ve been soo blessed with good health and a great life filled with a super family and terrific friends. Thanks to the Man upstairs for keeping me in his care.
I especially appreciate my Tsaiko family for all the Fs. . during this UH sports down time!
Have a great day and super weekend! Much Aloha to all!
What a bunch of bologna. The Prez and the Chance can’t even confess that it is their fault for not ensuring their own policies and procedures are not communicated on a regular basis to staff. I also find it odd that the Chance is not stepping up and talking responsibility for what is happening under his domain. He makes all the apples look bad.
Please, no rotten apple puns.
SteveM, Papajoe2
Thanks for the Bon Voyage wishes. We are now in DC waiting for our flight to Copenhagen Denmark.
We brought the IPAD along so hopefully I can continue to lurk on the blog when time permits.
Best wishes to Jim Donovan and Rich Sheriff who are extremely dedicated and very hard working. I know they only wanted the best for UH and were looking for ways out of the box to raise funds. Hope this all works out for the best for everyone concerned.
It’s 73 . Making myself a year older. Alzheimers? ? ?
@jm2375
A lot of people have foot in mouth syndrome. It’s the ones that have air go whooshing by their heads I worry about. lol
Naturally, on special days I have sock mouth and lately I do have the DTRIC hairstyle. lol
Why did the apple go to the doctor?
He felt rotten to the core.
What did the Samoan apple say to the caterpillar?
Leaf me alone.
Happy Birthday Shauna!!!
Happy 29th Birthday Myki!!!
Good Morning Tsaikos!!! Hope all have a great day!!!
Kapahulu,
Enjoy the Baltic. Spent my last BD in St. Petersburg. It was awesome!
Gigi,
Thank God for AC-climate control switch at home.
GEEV EM!!! 😎
Roger dat! Seems obvious from the over-dramatic actions taken by Admin. My impression was that the President is more worried about the image of UH and the national embarrassment than the financial situation of the lower campus.
It’s not like the ticket buyers are shocked and outraged and are gathering with ropes, pitchforks and torches…is it?
If anything, there is disappointment for the concert and sympathy that we were duped. My opinion and impression anyway.
Im guessing the Chow interview will be pushed to College Football Live?
Thanks for the clarification jm2375.
As I recall, chiefgator has always been a touch critical, but is not a troll. I’ve found a lot of his comments interesting.
Happy Birthday Myki!
Happy Birthday Shauna!
Happy birthday Krispie Kreme!
All of 75 today.
Whoo-hoo!!!
Ummmmmmm, anyone can swing by Maui and pick up a couple dozen or so?
Did Chow’s agent know he was supposed to interview with OTL?
Good to see that the Big Ten – PAC 12 pact is not happening. I would like to see more PAC 12 on UHs schedule.
Anyone at UH researched why student attendance in football dwindled in the last half of 2012? If it was researched, anyone know what was the cause?
Chow shot the interview this morning. He thought it was supposed to be live, but it was taped for another day.
Read that USC recently got a commit from a top DT and have 8 in the top 100.
I think it was a good idea to meet with student leaders.
But I also think that there needs to be additional forums. This is the summer, when per-course tuition is higher. It would be more prudent to get feedback once the fall semester starts.
Then again, Pitt fans are awesome.
I mean last half of 2011.
The fact that some of us find the situation “not that shocking” should be cause for concern.
I mentioned before that it already seems evident that either the policies they have in place don’t work or they are selectively enforced.
Anyone that has either worked for UH or worked with know of the speed bumps and red tape and long time employees that value their income and actually take pride in their work endure such issues on a daily basis.
So to see $200,000.00 disappear when these stringent polices are supposedly in place is alarming and more than a disappointment for those truly concerned with the direction and leadership at UHM.
#80,
Is that it? Must be a down year for Orgeron.
That Sweet Caroline stadium was chicken-skin outstanding!
Now, what can we do to top that? Everybody ready to learn da ha’a, and do ’em with da team? Just wondering out loud.
Raining again…
ST: that Pitt video is awesome. Wow! Nice to see all those young faces singing together and shouting, GO PITT.
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
Went to see Neal Diamond at Blasidell and the same kind of enthusiasm was felt when he sang that signature song. UH needs to find one similar that will get the juices flowing. Instead of Sweet Caroline, how about we do “Locomotion” and change it to “Local Motion”? “Everybody’s doing a brand new dance now….come on baby, do the Local Motion”……
If I’ve told you guys once, I’ve told you a hundred times, I’m the overprotective Warrior volleyball auntie. Mess with them, mess with me!
Here is a video of what Wisconsin student section does at the end of the 3rd quarter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tODlPxhbGF8
We need to do something.
And in other news …
My cousin had one of these. When the thing broke, we used to pound on the thing to get the players moving. 😆
Actually, I think I’m getting ahead of myself. I recall recent discussions as to how many in Aloha (Stadium) don’t even know UH’s fight song or Hawai’i Pono’i. Guess we gotta start somewhere, though.
Sweet Caroline?
Wassamatta wit Hawaii Aloha?!?!
Hubby was a music major at UH, graduating in 1972. He played the clarinet in the band during football games at the stadium. Not sure if the band played at basketball games, too. But, he really enjoyed being there at the games as a STUDENT.
Was attendance good during the winning 2007 season? If we have a winning season with a QB with charisma, I think attendance will be just as good this year.
Attendance in 2007 was “run of the mill” until the Boise State and UW game at the end of the year.
Quite pathetic considering…
The sweet caroline video at Pitt is a good example of a healthy student and fan morale. UH hasn’t had that for years, in fact if one assessed the morale for UH last year it would have to be listed as if not dead, than dying. And stop blaming the economy. The fans at Pitt have all the same problems but not at the football games!
Coaches and AD’s have a hand in this…Norm Chow seems to understand and intends to do something about it. Go Chow
You could definitely see your expertise in the work you write. The world hopes for more passionate writers such as you who are not afraid to mention how they believe. At all times go after your heart. “Billy Almon has all of his inlaw and outlaws here this afternoon.” by Jerry Coleman.
#99 – KahukuRR: – crap we can’t even get all the fans to wear green let alone do that……
We don’t have to go clear across the ocean to look for inspiration. Just look at what can be done in our own back yard when you assemble PRIDE and beliefs for a team, a school and a community…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlC8_8RHjGM&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiwpdPMn7Us&feature=related
Can you imagine the UH fans jumping up and down at the stadium as in the video in #99? With all the problems with rust, the bleachers would collapse.
Pitt’s Home Schedule

Frankly, kind of a yawner of a sked. Maybe they can learn another Neil Diamond song….
Oh! Don’t foget- We have a kicker in our backyard. Still young but, please make him an offer he can’t refuse.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGzvRoS7-tU&feature=related
Simple, announce that everyone that cheers or does something in unison, they are entered for a free trip to Vegas.
Those Kahuku fans are great. And so is that kicker, only 13 y.o.
The funny part was the Pitt players singing along.
and not only singing along, but moving their arms, too.
@A-joe
That was AMAZING! I can imagine students teaching students teaching parents teaching supporters! Amazing show of support and togetherness on the North Shore. Simply amazing. Dang! And thanks for sharing.
My brother suggested I may like this web site. He was totally right. This post actually made my day. You cann’t consider just how so much time I had spent for this information! Thank you!
Right on, A-Joe! That was some cool stuff!!!
LOL, Kevin! Hit da nail on da head! Mention free trip to Vegas, and get 100% participation! Hahaha! Good one! Shoot, people would probably be practicing every day of the week, just waiting for GameDay!
ADave is on it. Locomotion would be a great song for the fans.
Look, there’s still hope. I sat in the ‘old stadium’ where the Hawaii fans nearly brought the bleachers down when we stopped Stanford on a goal line stand…I think it was Stanford. And under Tomey and later Wagner there were times you couldn’t hear your self for the racket of R A I N–B O W S….and the trampling of the feet had Aloha rocking a couple of meters off its hinges.
Its not the beer, its not the economy, its not rock and roll and its not whatever the hell else you want to create…..its the inconsistency of the program itself and in my opinion, pay-per-view! It gave people an excuse to not go to the stadium. I also think the prices at the concessions are too high. Ok, thats my rant, and I’ve been wanting to lay that out for some time. Yes Im a season ticket holder…I’m a die hard, but aint dead yet and either is the UH football team! Go Warriors.
@jimmy the lock
It was all community/alumni driven who taught the cheerleaders. Facebook group named Red Alert with youtube videos and practices at Laie Elem.
We need to start something like the tomahawk chop. Maybe with ti leaves.
I’ve been to the stadium a couple of times. What scared me was the lack of hand rails. It was so hard for me to go down the steps without hanging onto something.
@KahukuRR
Thanks for the scoops! Whatever the method, the delivery was awesome.
@gigi-hawaii
Got hand rails now.
Gwen Nakamura has already implemented some wicked cadences in our band’s repertoire. All we need is to have the student section in unison playoff the band’s beats.
Our band is the key. If the student section can play off on them, the rest of the stadium will feed on the energy.
Install song leaders! Howzit, you guys remember your song leaders?
There’s a distinction between a fan and a spectator.
I became aware of this while following D3 and NAIA football over the past decade. Following your team on road games in the Fall to sit in uncovered bleachers on the far side of the field (think, access to the lua) under rainy or snowy skies requires that you be a fan!
A-joe,
Emme Tomimbang! 😆
Does the band repeat the same cadences each year or are new ones created every fall?
A-joe — you posted a youTube video of our Tsai-ko song leader once. No music but lots of singing, arm waving and everything… real tricky, but possible. 🙂
But song leaders like in high school, would be interesting. Then need songs….
Thank you for every other informative website. Where else may just I get that type of information written in such a perfect means? I’ve a project that I’m simply now working on, and I’ve been on the look out for such info.
The “Sweet Caroline” arena/stadium crowd thing is actually quite old.
First encountered it at Yard House in Waikiki on St. Patty’s Day almost 6 years ago. They blasted it over the PA system and the crowd hit the chorus “OH OH OH” part in unison.
Also for the past few seasons at Les Murakami Stadium, they’ve played it either at the 7th inning stretch or when opposing teams switch out their pitcher. Crowd does the same. Maybe not as elaborate as that video shows, but it’s been a fad for a while now.
More of a gimmick thing than anything. Pretty sure Neil Diamond isn’t seeing a surge of new younger fans as a result of it.
Happy Birthday Shauna and Myki!!!
Happy aloha friday da 13th!
The best student-related atmosphere I’ve experienced at UH is still at those 11pm basketball games.
It’s downright hostile for the opposing team and the students are all standing freely and loud.
Something seems to squash that enthusiasm for the rest of the season though… hmmm..
It’s actually a cool and useful piece of info. I am glad that you shared this useful information with us. Please keep us up to date like this. Thank you for sharing.
Pretty much the same ones. They introduce different ones every so often.
Several years ago Gwen came on to blog to chat with us. We mentioned to her the current cadences then were sorta generic. Typical rhythms you’d normally see coming from a mainland band. We asked her if there was a way to change the cadences that would reflect the Pacific Basin we live in? We have some amazing countries and their cultures we could draw influences from. Not only Hawaii but, Samoa, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, China, Korea…
At the ’08 spring game at the stadium, Gwen introduced a whole bunch of new cadences that reflect the various cultures of the Pacific. That was waaaay cool! Now we just need to follow her lead and take it up a notch.
Das it!
Start all the games after 10pm! 😉
SteveM going be happy that he noneed buy anymore sunscreen….
….and show up in Happi coats, malo, barong tagalog, etc.!
Maybe I am the only former Yell Leader on this blog, but give me an hour with student leaders and something could be set in motion that feeds on itself. I had an advantage at the Mens College I attended with student body of under 300. Almost all came to every game.
…and the always present, “Ainokea…I do wat I like” garb.
Wow, wonderful blog format! How lengthy have you ever been running a blog for? you make running a blog look easy. The full look of your web site is great, as well as the content material!
Happy Birthday Myki and Shauna! Nice picture of sjmacro too!
And no ESPN in the 50’s
Was there an associated womens’ college with under 299 students? 😆
okay…how to get the students to attend the aloha stadium (and keep koakane and j/j company in the student section)
pass a new law that allows any and all university of hawaii system students a special id card that allows them to partake in beverages with alcohol for games held at the aloha stadium. to include a special tailgate tent with a nominal fee to cover food stuffs and a happy hour priced beverage menu two hours before the event.
oh what the heck, got to be fair so extend this law to the les, ssc, bob coolen stadium, and the like.
i bet they would come on down.
Doesn’t have to be a song leader leading a song per se. Just a focal point that can command a crowd’s response in unison.
Vili is a good example. He roams the endzone area and points to section to elicit a cheering response. At first not everyone is paying a attention. But when enough of a group responds with a large cheer, the rest of the stadium takes notice. Soon he has thousands of fans screaming instantly at a mere glance or quick gesture.
Surely his timing is questionable but, the facts remain: The crowd can be responsive. They just need something to cheer and be told when to cheer it.
We can!!
Happy hour pricing on beverages? Who going be cheering in the 4th quarter???
I dig the “Aloha ‘Oe/SIT DOWN!” cheer the student section and band does after an opponent fouls out. Das a good one. Just gotta get the whole arena to do ‘um now.
Focal point.
Whatever happened to Marshmallow Head?
RE: #136
d1shima — I think after 7:00 pm will suffice for a party atmosphere. Getting old and don’t want people arriving in the dark. 😐
But then, I like the idea of a 11:00 a.m. start better. Not only will it increase sunscreen and floppy hat sales 70%, but we can watch the game, go home take a nap, and then go out and have dinner and party in the evening. Wonder how many pieces of Ferd’s pie the AD will lose on this move… actual attendance could match the Pro Bowl.
That is a good one! For years I never knew what they were yelling, but thankfully someone with a certain jacket clarified it for me.
148- He’ll vehemently deny it but, it’s stuffed in Mark Takai’s garage.
Souvenir. =)
I remember sitting in the stands at a Farrington-Kamehameha basketball game in the ’60’s when Freitas (who was by far the largest and tallest kid on the floor – both teams) picked up the Farrington center (I forget his name – I think it was Reynold…don’t remember if was his first or last name) who had fallen to the floor, by the waistband and just hoisted him up to his feet. Like picking up a rag doll from the ground. Immediately when Reynold got on his feet, Reynold took one swing at Freitas’ face. That was it! Immediately, all the Puunui “boys” and others from the stands swarmed the court and the brawl was on! Reynold came from Puunui. Throughout the game, Freitas’ play was “bully-boy” style and the fans were upset and took that opportunity to get at Freitas. I don’t know who won, but that was immaterial, street justice was served.
As a result, Reynold broke his hand. In a subsequent game a week or two later, again Farrington-Kamehameha was matched up for the championship game. Everybody was wondering if Reynold would participate. He did and performed marvelously. Out played Freitas even with his broken hand in a cast. I think even Farrington won the game. This was a time when the ILH was a “town” league – both public and private schools. The OIA league at the time were “country” schools. No “State” chamipionships.
Farrington’s coach, Bob Ikehara did a splendid job in coaching the team. Farrington also had a guard, Norman DePont(e?), who often gave dribbling exhibitions, often running out the clock as opposing players made fools of themselves trying to get the ball away from him. No shot clock back then. His dribbling and ball handling had to be seen to believed. Amazing for a high school player.
So, that’s my memory of Rockne Freitas.
Anybody here old enough to remember UH basketball games at Blaisdell in the late ’60s, early ’70s when the head cheerleader — a guy with a huge personality — got the student section rocking (and laughing) with an interactive cheer called: “Have you got that spirit?” Lotta fun, lotta noise, great response from the students. Of course, back then, you could sit in the prime seats with your student ID card.
Heck…play Iz’s Hawai’i 78 between the 3rd and 4th quarter and have the crowd in unison recite “Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka Aina I Ka Pono O Hawai’i”….
Cannot get more original or chicken skin than that. Heard it before a BJ Penn fight….all the Hawaiians chanted it together. By the end of the song…we wanted to hit somebody…lol
Point is, it’s not hard….you need a diehard crew to support it until it catches on. Sort of like the wave in the stadium. You start it off then the masses encourage that minority.
150- Eh, speaking of the jacketed one- will the Balloon Brigade be re-instated? That ban was only a WAC rule, right?
I wish there was a way to bring back the BOWZO’s….
Cinqo
They’re gonna play that when the Warriors take the field.
People already bring their own bentos into the SSC and lord knows familes are brining their own coolers into the softball stadium stands for years already.
As one guy said to me “brah, can bring your own cooler and it’s free.. best deal in town!” as he lets his damn kids run around the bleachers not paying attention to foul balls…
Some people are hopeless…
The played Hawaii 78 during the 2009 season and then stopped in 2010 and 2011 for some reason.
Frustrating because it’s pretty awesome, but when the kanaks and da braddas are all still drinking in the lot, no one is around to see it.
Now how does one fix that problem of getting local people into one place ON TIME????
I think you need to lie to the public. Tell them kick off is at 5pm, so by the time 5:55 pm hits, they will have made it to see the team run onto the field.
@Kaneohe Resident- Great story!
@Clyde- Good memory. Goes so show it’s possible. Can!
@cincodemayonnaisse- that would be cool!
Bring the cannon back.
Heck add like four more of those things. the louder the better!
Whatever the fans do, they just better not get too successful with their efforts. I remember the Bowzos in Klum started up the swim team. They got the place rocking! But when the admisistration saw the fans enjoying themselves, poof! The Bowzos were banned! That’ll teach them so having so much fun.
Today, every time I see the Manoa Maniacs, I just roll my eyes upward. Nothing maniacal about them! When the administration gets involved, forget it. Look at Rubberband Man…totally spontaneous.
Kevin- last time we explored the idea it was the ammunition that was in question. Not only its cost but, the physical shipping and handling of ordinances was a challenge. Do you know if it was ever resolved?
I wonder if could ask the guy (who does the pyro for the Hilton) if could piggyback on his license to bring in the ammo?
A-Joe,
Nakamura said they were purchasing the blanks locally. A local security shop had them. Some online places didnt allow shipping to Alaska or HI. Some did.
The Michigan v. Notre Dame night game last year was chicken skin.
Getting 50,000 tea leaves shaking in unison would be awesome.
Uhhhh, just getting 50,000 without ti leave would be nuff…
When was the last time the stadium was packed 2007 Boise St and Washington..
162- Yup! I loved the Bowzos impromptu performances during timeouts. Fricken hilarious! They owned Klum. Neva need cheerleaders. Sadly, they got disbanded because they were getting waaay too up and personal with our opponent’s players on the court after every play. Shoji called it. He threatened to quit if the Bowzos weren’t shut down..
Kevin- So just gotta donate money for the buy the blanks?
#167 A-joe: Didn’t know Shoji threatened to quit. Bring back the Bowzos and recruit another coach. Coaches we can find, student participation/spirit is hard to get.
A-Joe,
I think its an availability issue. Not sure who else is using signal cannons.
It was UH that killed student participation over the years. They want the students there but under their conditions.
Maybe they should rethink the “No Outside Food” rule and charge people who want to bring in their own food? $2.50 per person for a small cooler/bag. $10 for medium cooler. (Every group will have their designated food carrier, no doubt.) No large cooler allowed in the stadium/arena. Cooler must be able to fit under your seat. No alcohol. Special entry gate for people with food/coolers. — This would be pure profit, except for clean up fees.
Those with health concerns could then enjoy the game with their choice of snacks.
Happy Birthday wishes to Myki and Shauna!
You have something here.
When the braintrust down there don’t see something with their fingerprints on it, they will find a way to shut it down.
Most recent incident, involved a simple request from student-athletes of an undefeated team with 20+ wins under their belt to have their fans wear all black just this once for a big game they were going to have. Had nothing to do with shirts to sell or anything like that, just a request to get some help in getting the word out to the people.
Everyone was on board, local media on ESPN 1420 got the word out on the radio, even TV sports anchors made announcements on their own Twitter accounts early in the afternoon before the 5pm news and were totally stoked about it. Yet the hammer down was attempted by those that should have been more on board than anything if you know what I mean…
While it eventually got “ok’d”, it was a sign things need fixing.
Sure there are procedures that must be followed.. ahem but we’ve have seen there are apparent exceptions to this rule.
They will never do that. That $2.50 per person is nothing compared to the $10,000.00 UH athletics gets from corporate sponsors.
Look around a UH venue. Let’s use Les Murakami as an example.
There are advertisements on the outfield wall for the company that makes their hotdogs sold at the stadium. There are beverage sponsors also shelling out $10,000.00 a piece for advertising space.
Those coporate sponsors will never pay down $10,000.00 each if UH can’t guarantee that their products will be the only products for sale at UH events.
The Army is pulling sponsorship out of NASCAR. We should ask UH ROTC cadre to see if they can get the use of a howtizer for games.
Montana St. ROTC cadre uses a 75MM howitzer at their home games.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MYKI Love you girl!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHAUNA
A memorable Aloha Friday to all…be thankful for our paradise.
BG
Get the Navy and the USS Missouri admin to move the ship a little closer to the stadium and shoot off the 16″ guns. Would be costly but oh so loud.
Oh no not the Marshmellow. All you are going to here are the boos. And all you are going to see are flying objects pelting the poor thing.

#153. Clyde, yeah I remember. Think his name was “Kimo.” If memory serves me correctly he didn’t start out as a member of the pep squad. He walked on one night to teach the squad and the students a new cheer. He was a hit. The students anticipated his appearance at games there after….much like the Bowzos and the Rubberman.
I remember that musubi sailing through the air in slow motion and exploding on impact on the Marshmellow’s head. That oblivious grin on the Marshmellow’s face with it’s un-phased response was surreal. Takai wooshed the mascot off the field.
That would be a good mascot, a spam musubi.
Stanford conducts a week of outrageous competition where students bribe the band for the prestige of being the Tree Mascot.
“There are three basic rules for Tree Week:
Don’t light yourself on fire. (There is folklore about one aspiring Tree who — this being Stanford — wrote a five-page paper detailing how he could light himself on fire without actually being injured. He didn’t win.)
Don’t go to jail.
Don’t go to the hospital. ”

d!shima, Right across the street were 500 plus in Women’s college. I don’t remember asking girls out, they would just show up in their cars. Ahh the early years of University of San Diego.
Recently UH Rainbowtique had a contest for UH students to design a new HI-Life shirt.
http://www.uhrainbowtique.com/productdetails.asp?pid=6148&pagenum=1
Next step? Have UH students submit designs for uniforms for football, basketball, etc..? Yikes, would be interesting to see the braintrust even consider this. Would be a test of skills in negotiating rights with the outfitter (UA, Addidas, etc…)
@Kevin…you are so right about the situation regarding…IT HAS TO BE THEIR IDEA! Just like working for any big corporation. You can suggest something until you are blue. But it has to be THEIR ( managements) idea.
Have a great weekend everyone. Play nice. And no more DUI’s players.
#179,
I 2nd that.
Don’t even start with design elements and UA while A-joe is in da hale. 🙄
jimmykulani and iwwthm,
Move Mo closer? Dem guns was designed to make their presence known from 25 miles away!
d1 they have no idea!!!!!!!!
The song should be, “Tiny Bubbles”. Think about it. Have giant bubble making machines go off and everyone “all bus” by the 3rd quarter would sound like Don Ho, with Don Ho on the jumbo screen singing his slurry rendition of the song. Would be hilarious and that could get the student section crazy. On the big games, pass out bubble making bottles to the students, fake leis, theme it. That would be something only UH could identify with.
Lock and load, commence firing!
Step 1: Promote a white-out game.
Step 2: Hand out soap bubble bottles to the female student population
Step 3: Sit back and watch the potential
(Im 29 and I can get away with suggesting this without the ‘sukebe’ vibe)
Just so you know when the 16″ guns are fired the whole ship moves bout two feet in the opposite direction.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHSn1pjynng&feature=related
Hmmmm,
Students can walk to all on campus events and attend for free. Buses are hired to take them to and from UH football games. Not much more you can do except go knock on their Dorm door, hold their hand and escort them to the Stan Sheriff, Murakami and softball fields.
Some students demand center court and 50-yard line seats for games. Yea right… dream on… You students haven’t proven you deserve to move out boosters who pay much more than your $50 fee so you can have their prime seats.
Going to games growing up was an awesome experience. You young men and women are missing out.
Well, are we going to be near the opposite end of the ship?
No.
Ok den…
Well then fire 2 rounds in the opposite direction. lol
200
200e
Honestly speaking, Les Murakami probably draws the largest student involvement when you consider the ratio per size of each venue.
There are a lot of students there on Friday night games. After the game, head on out for a night out.
Sometimes that rock wall across the street directly behind the outfield draws a bigger student crowd than some men’s basketball games at the SSC.
For those that need a visual, I meant shoot one round in the northerly direction and one round in the southerly direction, simultaneously. This should negate movement unless the cannons are on opposite sides of the ship then you are going to go in a circle. lol
Hottie of the Week: Cherry Lei
What’s funny is I emailed Coach Mack a few times about playing Hawaii 78” when the team enters the stadium….
Breaking news: Kauai attorney found guilty of licking his client’s ear
SUKEBE!
#202,
i 2nd going round in circles.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAEfZ1u2j-w
Da Band get ’em already… song starts at about 2 mins. in.
While I love Hawaii ’78, I think we need a more catchy tune where people can sing along. Very few of the students can pronounce the Hawaiian words much less know their meaning.
I agree with d1shima, Hawaii Aloha.
Or I could also go with Buffoman, Tiny Bubbles.
I think the songs selected need to be looked at with regard to who you want participating. If it’s the students it needs to be something more catchy like that old Black Eye Peas song, I Got that feeling.. Sort of speaks to what you want to happen. Lyrics go on to say, It’s going to be a good night, which is what we want. Good night UH wins! It’s Old/new enough that it could cover a wider spectrum of folks participating.
The Hawaiian Theme songs are more for us older folks and that could work if that’s the audience you’re appealing to.
I’m an old guy, really old, but if you want that stadium rocking, you need the energy of the young folks.
So, enter with Black Eye Peas, get crazy with Tiny Bubbles when everybody kinda bus and that one works because the lyrics are simple and repetitive, and not serious. The more fun, the wilder the crowd will get….NOISE!
Okay, you can punch this full of holes.
Frank deLima said that when he did his Aloha Stadium halftime show singing
Lucille, the whole stadium shouted out “What, you leaving me now?!”
Catchy tune, simple lyrics, old futs can remember and young ‘uns can learn — something like . . . Tiny Bubbles? I like that suggestion too. Or maybe DeLima can come w/ something . . .
Another old fut song… My Hawaii (originally by the Young Rascals). Might be a little too complex for a stadium crowd…but I can see Wes’side Warrior’s ohana in Georgia singing this in the arena after a game…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bER5qd6lwpM
I have been unwavering in my support of Brad Lincoln to be a starter. I still believe that he needed to make that start yesterday. I believed his best position to be as “starter” and the Pirates were in need of a starter at present. I will defend that start yesterday to the end!
I think if Tiny Bubbles is going to work, they need to do the following:
1. They need to show Don Ho on the Jumbotron singing it.
2. They should have a theme night for the event “Faux Hawaiian Nights” plastic leis, loud tourist shirts , etc..
3. When Don Ho sings, there needs to be Karaoke words on the screen so folks can sing along.
4. There need to be lots of bubbles.
Don Ho is a local icon and people, especially old people all across the country may know who he is from their visits to the islands in years past. So, if this ever makes it to the screen like “Pitt’s Sweet Caroline, folks will get the connection and the party atmosphere that the UH football game brings.
If it catches on, there should be one night each year where folks are encouraged to dress in their “Midwest Tourist” best outfits. Could become a student tradition.
absolutely has to be Tiny Bubbles, 30,000 strong at beginning of 4th Qtr.
Kevin
Neil Diamond & The Monkees got a huge boost of new young fans from the Shrek movies with I’m A Believer
they’ll never approve tiny bubbles. it would be like encouraging intoxication. anyway, alcohol sales are cutoff after the third quarter isn’t it?
the state’s and the university’s integrity would be chastised for being morally incorrect.
kanaka wai wai. nah, too mellow.
if you want a don ho/kui lee song why not go with, “ain’t no beeg ting braddah…”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6Qyr-JLgKk
of course some lyrics could be stylized for the occasion.
Song suggestions:
Fish & Poi Sean Nauao
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGpteUCfJJQ
Ka’au Crater Boys – Guava Jelly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99sPvjG6YM8
Ehukai – Molokai Slide
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZIKo1QPokM
I like them all. Everyone knows them and can sing along with humor.
Maybe this discussion goes nowhere but jus in case, which of these songs suggested would best be able to rally the crowd to becoming that 12th man who can “have the back” of the Warriors going into the 4th quarter?
I’ve been at a few events with Hawaii people who have united around Hawaii Aloha in the proverbial “chicken skin” moment.
Anyway…
okay keeping it simple stupid…the rule of “kiss”.
just have the uh band strike it up with “hawaii 5-0” theme. we can all do the
“lalalala—–laaaaa, lalalalaaaaaa..” that way no one is embarassed by not knowing the words. and if you off key no worry everybody else is, too.
incorporate some foot stomping to accompany the drum beats.
on homecoming pass out 1,000 kazoo to the first to walk in and then sell the rest of the 40,000 for $5 bucks each.
whoa i tell you….what i when eat?
can offset the 200k wonder-blunder funds at the same time.
…nuff said.
All of your suggestions are great however the people who should be organizing and brain storming should be the student body of the University. If you want to get student participation than it will have to start at the root and allow them the opportunity to bring their ideas forward. Us old futs had our time and now let them have theirs. If the administration was akamai and understand good marketing practices than this is the area that should be addressed.
Didn’t mean what I said.
Big Ooopsie
This song.

Is it Wisconsin that does the “Jump Around?” That one is pretty good.
For the students of course…
Just catching up with the blog – couple of items.
Sweet Caroline was great at Pitt; even more so at Tuscaloosa which has 100,000+ fans singing, and embellishing it with “roll tide roll.” I’ve seen it 2x.
UH basketball cheerleader from the 60s/70s – James Kimo Scott. I used to work with his wife Gwen years ago. Kimo and Gwen are great people.
Hilo-Warrior. Next time you get a chance to go to a Rattler game, look on the sideline for a blonde haired coach by the name of Kani Kauahi. He’s a Kauai boy, who’s been coaching at Arizona for a few years now.
225…false al arrives once again. So sad you.
My Tsaiko friends…
Mahaaaaalo nui for all the Birthday wishes. I was in recovery from a surgical procedure and not up all the birthday festivities. Good news is that I’m on the fast track to wellness.
A-Joe….got your call brother. Mahalo for checking in. I’m feeling better today, but still not up and about. Will call you soon. Much love brother.

I really luved reading your article. You make some very good points 🙂
evening gang
check this out – http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/19024326/promoter-uh-stevie-wonder-deposit-money-has-been-found
I like that “Sweet Caroline” tradition at Pitt. It really does show the student spirit.
Oh yeah? Money found says the promoter…
I LIKE SEE!
don’t want to read the entire blog comments, so pardon me if this has been asked:
so what song do we sing? and over the rainbow (the real title by arlen and harcourt was written in 1939 for judy garland in wizard of oz) just doesn’t work for me as a rally song.
any ideas?
Loa — interesting. Now we have the beginnings of a Hawaii Five-0 plot… or we’re at least one-third way through– I can’t wait to see how this all plays out in the end.
Stay tuned…
Found your blog from Google, thank you for the great read.
Re: 237. Yeah, Kevin, I saw that, too. This is getting bizarre. Either Peyton’s putting a major spin on the story, or UH acted in haste as the promoter urged them not to do. Stay tuned …
@235 LOA:
If Payton is to be believed and the ante for the Stevie Wonder concert has been raised, how would the UH Athletic Department make any SUBSTANTIAL amount?
I would say that the agreement, such as it was, was for X dollars and not X++ dollars and so …
PAYTON _ SHOW US THE MONEY!
I think the president is opening the way to more problems if she wants to be informed about every decision. To the athletic department or anybody not named Rich2176, $200,000 is a lot of money. To the Manoa campus, it’s a lot of money. To the university system, not so much.
I can see some wiseacre in the Lower Campus sending the president this e-mail: “We’re taking up a collection for Jane’s baby shower. Just wanted you to know that.”
Also, to say the $200,000 is “our money,” when it was derived from the athletic department’s revolving account, then the counter argument is the lack of money — $10 million in accumulated debt — is also the Upper Campus’ problem, too. Or is this Vegas where you’re taxed on winnings but assume no debt on losses?
Two days to come up with all the money!
…..can’t see it happening
….too.
Maui concert?
I don’t think anybody knew about a Maui concert.
That’s pretty good.
Being investigated for fraud, then asking for more money.
Those are big kukui.
How do those “plays” go?
Yah, we got you in with the first payment. Now all we need is another payment and you going really start getting da “big bucks”
🙄
“Do I have ‘stupid’ wrote all over my face?”
Peyton says will cost buku bucks to still get Wonder here and lays down an impossible deadline.
Seems like Peyton is playing a game of “SEE SEE!!!” enough already.
Wow! Matt Matsunaga is the mouthpiece for the “sweepstakes” machines. Hmmmm….
What da??? No mo end to this movie. It has to be a movie. Call FBI and money is suddenly found????
Hmm.
I’m surprised the promoters didn’t get notice the money order was canceled because of insufficient funds.
UH may want to call Drew Brees.
Happy Birthday, Myki!
now we’re getting somewhere.
The Lock’s got a great idea. the 16 inch gun.
d1shima and the Lock got another great idea.
and UH upper campus. blaming the other guy. C’mon Apple, fess up.
your crew, and i mean all your crew, messed it up big time, and now
you’re trying to make a patsy outta a nice guy.
what schmucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👿
and while you’re at it, also go bag the “promoter.” for being a idot/ fpr tjomlomg
we are idiots too.
ok. i shudda spell checked. but you get da idea.
and when you get back to work, JD, give us 100%.
work with Rocky. make a fundraiser happen.
no begging. just your positive vibe.
Hawaii Aloha is a good one.
also, humming “ta ta taaa daaaa da da da da daaaaaaaaaaaa.
(5-0) das my fave.
Adding notes for a proposed Hawaii Five-0 “Stevie Blunder” episode.
Enhance plot with… ??????
(1) Promoter trying to save reputation–true or diversion?,
(2) UH Admin suspiciously over reacting, maybe over acting.
(3) McGarret’s Kukui High School coach is the AD, coworkers give inside clues,
(4) mystery private investigators working in the shadows–whose agenda?
(5) following the money leads to the real big bucks and underlying conspiracy by mystery boss (Wo Fat)…
remember, this only fiction.
But sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. 😐
