What a line up for the Alum against the Varsity. Should be fun.
Did Tsuji mention Brandt was flying in for it? I thought I heard that and got pretty excited cause even if she did not start late in her career, she was a great off the bench player.
The trio of Melissa Villaroman, Hedder Ilustre and Ashley Watanabe can teach the current back row players a thing or two about passing, defense and serving. Brittany Hewitt can show Vorster how to use her size in blocking. Kamana’o was a superstar. Everyone can learn from her.

7. Hot, you can hardly compare the two situations. alum match vs. real game. Perhaps if they watched videos of some of the DSs from back in the day, maybe.
no one was really complaining about the passing until the meltdown against UCSB. The serving, however, is another matter with the number of SEs that have been plaguing them. as for Hewitt and Vorster, i would have thought that Vorster saw plenty of Hewitt’s technique during her redshirt year of 2011.
Id love to see Brittany Hewitt again!
i hope there will be highlights from this game or something. seriously disappointed that they don’t televise these kinds of games. would love to make it down to the SSC but work is in the way.
Shoji was at the Kahuku/Farrington game this past Tuesday. Hoping Kahuku’s Anae decides to stay home and play for UH. Also hoping Shoji got a good look at Kahuku’s freshman setter Sharae Niu. She is the real deal.

11. sasa, Adora Anae verbaled to Utah. Early signing is Nov 13 so hopefully if Shoji really wants Anae he made a scholie offer to her on the spot. Also he probably wanted to see how Savannah Kahakai was doing.
8. I wasn’t being literal. I was implying that this list has some very, very good players. I don’t think I’m the only one who’s hoping year after year that Vorster will somehow be an answer in blocking with her being 6-4 and all, compared to Hewitt who is of similar size but was a blocking presence since her freshman year. Lauren Duggins, during her time, was better than any of the current MBs. Longo very solid at libero, and Mendoza’s been pretty good, but the rest are meh especially if compared to the alumnae coming in. I could say Olevao and Kastl can learn a thing or two from Hartong, but you know…

Adora Anae, a 6-foot-1 senior currently committed to Utah while still being heavily pursued by the University of Hawaii, as one of the best weapons in the state on the outside.
I guess we’ll just have to wait until signing day to see what happens.
I love this blog but I hope the players do not read it. There is some unwarranted negativity. I know it is redundant but we need to remember that most the VB and FB players are under the age of 21. We are asking a lot out of them week after week.
Concentrate on the positive…what about that set from Vorster to Uiato…wow!

17. She is a verbal commit, has not signed a National Letter of Intent yet. Early signing period is in November across the nation. Until a student signs a National Letter of Intent, it is not official and even the school cannot make official statements about them as commits. It’s happened before when Michelle Waber was a Fullerton(?) verbal commit then ended up signing her NLI for Hawaii.
If Anae goes to Utah,no more the kind of local food that she’s used to.Hope someone can put something on you tube as Cindy mentioned for tomorrow nights match.Maybe the booster club??

Very high level of play especially Wiscinski of State and Tori Dixon and Daly Santana of the Gophers
Uiato better than both setters. Both teams are a great match up for our wahine. It will be a tough NCAA TOURNEY this year. Minnesota beats State
Cindy…I saw that you mentioned the Vorster to Uiato set…just wanted to acknowledge to others…that Vorster IS good…I think she is awkward…she reminds me of a puppy that still needs to “grow” into her height. People get down on her but when she makes a play … SHE MAKES A PLAY.
I just really feel strongly that these young ladies are young and I don’t want to take the joy out of their game for them by just focusing on what they did wrong.

22. I don’t know if you’re referring to my post, but I’d like to remind you that Vorster is no spring chicken in college vb. She’s a third year sophomore. If she didn’t redshirt in 2011, she’d be a senior next year. Vorster has been successful, mostly because her awkward attacks throw off opposing defenders, but a starter like her has to know how to actually hit the ball. Like Adolpho. Or any other MB. Hewitt was someone who also had awkward moments, but she knew how to hit hard. As far as blocking, I really expected more than the anemic blocking numbers Vorster’s had.

23. In the past few matches, Vorster has hit some balls with authority……a few of them went out though. She has gotten better over the past two seasons, but there is still a tremendous upside to her play.
I believe she graduated high school early and spent the spring semester prior to her redshirt season here as well.
23. true she is a third-year player but her reps have been limited when sharing time with Tuaniga and by where is is in the rotation (next to the setter). which is why she hasn’t been in the national stats due to the lack of attempts. Agree that you’d expect her to hit hard (er) at times.
as for the anemic blocking numbers. she touches a lot of balls and doesn’t get credit for that.
you also have to take into account how many opportunities she has to block when she’s in the front row, how many times the opposition runs the middle with her in there. That she is there with her size often forces the setter to go elsewhere. which also doesn’t show up in the stats.
It really is hard to compare the two players because they aren’t going against the same competition. just looking at random matches from 2011 were nights when Hewitt had 2 BA, others when she had 1 BS, 8 BA. much depended on what type of plays the opponents ran.
25. agree with you that she has been hitting with more authority. a couple did go wide, no touch, because she’s hitting at such a high point.
yes, she did graduate early and was here that spring. very smart young woman. science major if I remember correctly.
mckenna is looking good this year. excited to see how much more she improves over the next year and a half before stepping foot in the stan sheriff.
Sharene – totally agree with your angle. Some feel like a physical gift equals an ability. As for Jade and Tai (who would have red shirt) there are so many possible reasons that they are asked to consider it. They may be talented but need more strength or time to grow into their bodies or learn the system better. Others like Sarah and Ali and Ashley might be ready or needed right away. But you are right they are all trying to do their best for the team, university and fans. They can’t help but know this is a highly watched program (look at the numbers) or feel the roar and cheers. Some seem to think they are not trying their best, but I disagree. I think they are trying very hard at all times and sometimes, too hard. Jade’s footwork is not always smooth and she doesn’t always adjust to low/high sets but she is available and does touch/attempt most sets but a perfect spike is not always the result otherwise we’d have more Kananis and Emilys, we don’t. And as to her blocking, yeah she’s the same height as Brittney, but she has a slighter build and look what happened to Brit’s body from all her reps and work, she had to give it a rest. We have what we have and I’m going to support the ones that make it on the court and appreciate their hardwork and sacrifice. Go Wahine!
Looking at old videos of this former players…totally forgot that Brandt played for UCSB before transferring to Hawaii. didn’t know she led the Big West as a setter while playing there. Juliana Sanders recently got married…& oh how nice it is to see Hewitt.
Wow! Imagine that! A 19-yr old A-Student-Athlete Science Major usually hitting 500 when she gets sets has missed some sets and had a bad game. Wonder how perfect Hot was as a sophomore college athlete in his sport while keeping the grade average in the A range in Science. looks to me like Vorster does her job, does her best. I’m sure everything looks so easy from my sofa/seat. Go Jade! Go Bows. Looking forward to seeing Hewitt on the court again…. and Kamanao….. and all the other alumnae.
I hope someone will remind Brittany that she was more year of eligibility left…(LOL)…she has been our stand out middle blocker in recent memory and one of my favorite Wahine to every suit up.

30. as for Brandt, mentioned that when she transferred in, also was among the leaders in aces while at UCSB. easy to forgot after all he years.
this is going to be fun to watch. Kanoe vs. Mita. Kinda wished that Robyn was playing as well. But since this is an alumnae match and it really doesn’t count, perhaps coach will throw in some of the people who are redshirts this year and give Emily and other ppl a rest?
Brittany never got her senior night celebration. They should do something tonight.
