Former Crusader joins Warriors
Defensive back Michael Martin has been added to the Warriors’ roster as a walk-on.
Martin is a 2009 Saint Louis School graduate who was at Mt. San Antonio College for two years. He spent the past semester at Kapiolani Community College finishing work on an associate’s degree.
Martin is 6 feet and 185 pounds.

UH strength coach Tommy Heffernan has pushed players to the physical brink with his strenuous conditioning program. Today, once again, it is Heffernan’s turn to be tested.
Heffernan will be leading the 40-mile walk from Diamond Head to Hauula District Park to raise money for his daughter’s education at the Variety School and raise awareness about Hawaii children with special needs.
If you wish to contribute or participate in the walk, please go to this link: Hilina‘i’s Walk.

Vernon Podlewski bids aloha in this video: Podlewski video.
First
Welcome Mr. Martin
Aloha.
Top ten.
Good morning all.
The Big East is making a “financial commitment” to help Boise State get into the Big West.
http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/60647/3-point-shot-draft-disappointment
To be invited, Boise needs eight of the ten Big West members to vote in favor. As of yesterday there were reports of four schools in favor and one abstaining (supposedly UC Davis has an acting AD who won’t support any changes to the status quo). I’m guessing Hawaii is opposed. Will the money be enough to sway the remaining four schools in Boise’s favor? The clock is ticking…
Good Morning! Welcome to the Warriors Michael Martin! Aloha and Best Wishes to Vernon Podlewski!
I wonder if there are more JC guys (offense) headed this way before fall camp (crosses fingers).
Have a good Aloha Friday, and wonderful weekend folks!
Just went back to see the end of yesterdays blog that al indicated more are recruits are on the way. This is good! Okay, so just got to sit tight for now and wait it out. Off season is tough!
Morning, everyone! Happy Aloha Friday!
Welcome to da home of da Warriors, Michael Martin!
Good luck to all participants of Hilina’i’s Walk!
Another JC transfer…. Wow….. Lots to brag about… We need more exposure on the mainland, JC transfers, while great, only lead to being a JC WAC football team…..
Not feeding it… not feeding it… it’s Aloha Friday, after all!
Happy Aloha Friday!
Welcome home Martin!
And
Aloha Podlewski!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Interesting to see what happens with boise
I hope tomorrow is a great day for everyone. If not it is going to be a looooong day.
A whole second longer, as a matter of fact.
The “MeTV” channel has become one of my favorite channels. Lots of the older shows from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.
Too bad it is a premium channel in Hawai’i. At least it was last year.
Now now now (finger wagging) Stephany Lee! A rule is a rule! Albeit a BS rule in this day and age. A rule is a rule. No Olympics for you. You should have known better! (still wagging my finger!) Now now now! Now now now!
I can’t believe that in this day and age, we still penalize athletes for smoking cannibus BUT allow alcohol, pain medication, and other highly harmful items because they are “legal.”
Society, more notably–the sporting world– still has a long way to go. I guess not all athletes can be as fortunate as NBA players.

Good morning, gang!
Welcome to Michael Martin!
Hope the Hilina’i walkers have a successful stroll & fundraising.
Good luck, Vern.
Hi ho…
Good morn9ing Tsaikos everywhere.

Aloha for now, Mr. Podlewski. best of luck in your solar panel job. good for your family!

One of Dave Shoji’s new transfers from the PAC 12 had an interesting quote about Hawaii’s conditioning program …… “dang these workouts are on a whole other level”

Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Welcome Michael.
Good luck to Coach Podlewski and his family.
Boise has only itself to blame for its current mess.
Boise was the one that contributed to the demise of the WAC by deciding to leave for the MWC. And if it felt the WAC was so inadequate, it shouldn’t have tried to place its non-football sports there.
And for all of the talk of its 100-percent summer participation, it now is appealing the nine lost scholarships for breaking summer rules.
‘Gmorning gang!

MeTV is free over the air channel 4.2.
Big East should just take all of Boise’s sports. Or not.
In the 1960s, we used to call MeTV just TV.
Wafan: what’s a MONGOLIAN BBQ? To me, a BBQ is a BBQ is a BBQ. Lol
Yeah, RedZone brings up an interesting suggestion. IF the Big East is so eager to help Boise offset it’s finances by donating to whatever conference takes Boise Olympic sports, why don’t they take ALL of Boise, and let them donkeys feel the travel burn. I think ALL votes should be cast against Boise, from whatever conference door(s) they knock on.
I miss those old variety shows… Red Skelton, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Ed Sullivan, etc. Glad that my wife has found several Korean variety tv shows to watch. I also used to get a kick out of the Japanese variety shows. And their commercials are some of the best and most creative I’ve ever seen.
Good morning Tsaikos! Happy Aloha Friday!
Welcome home, Mr. Martin!
Best wishes to Vern. We’ll miss seeing you on the sidelines, but hopefully we’ll still see you and the family at the games.

Not sure who Koa Kaleopaa is, but he received an offer from UH.

ww…i heard about those variety shows. must have been before my time.
so in the end…bs to u.
if they don’t find a home for the olympic sports then title ix will destroy them.
Wow! Quite a few schools chasing after him too.
Okay, Al… how about Donny and Marie, or Carol Burnett? Sonny & Cher? HeeHaw? And a great musical one that I still see on occasion… Lawrence Welk!
In Korea, a buddy of ours used to get Benny Hill tapes sent to him by his wife. Those were hilarious too.
ST – I didn’t notice it yesterday, but there’s a typo in the story about Vern.
Shouldn’t it be 2010?
39-40 Das one big braddah.
43. ww- first time I saw Benny Hill was in ’80 at my brother’s apartment in San Diego. Two years later his shows started showing up on PBS in the islands. Fricken hilarious!!

Remind me to get you & hubby inside the wire at Ft. Shafter one nite. At Hale Ikena they serve a typical Mongolian BBQ usually on Thursday nites.
Viva la difference!
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Gee, world is coming to an end – the Mayans may be right – but when AL posts at a reasonable hour (7:30ish) instead of at the witching hour, you know something is going to be different.
# 34 GIGI – should let WAFAN answer your question but since I”m up and around …
Mongolian barbeque – first came across it on a trip. It is somewhat akin to the arrangement that you have at Camillia. You take your meats (chicken, pork, beef, lamb), the vegetables and then you add your various sauces – soy, ginger water, etc etc, and take it to the chef.
There is a big stove of sorts, somewhat like an up-side-down wok where he will stir-fly your selection.
There were a couple of them in Honolulu but afraid I have not been to one in years.
Was good stuff though!
Wes’Side Warrior
I miss those variety shows too.
Smothers Brothers
Jonathan Winters
Flip Wilson
King Family
Ed Sullivan
I wouldn’t take Boise unless they play all of their games on the road. Why should our athletes miss more class time to accommodate Boise State. Did I mention the $100 million escrow fund that will be used to pay each school $1 million dollars a year for ten years regardless of when Boise State flies the coop. Take it or leave it.
Kekoa and Tom: if it is STIR FRY then why call if a BBQ? Lol.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

There is a big stove of sorts, somewhat like an up-side-down wok where he will stir-fly your selection. The stove is a cylinder-like with fire coming out on the sides- can get pretty hot in there – hence it is seen by you outside the window – like watching the cooking at Alan Wong but having the stove area enclosed.
There were a couple of them in Honolulu but afraid I have not been to one in years.
Was good stuff though!
Right you are Judge!…and btw, they also feature it at the ‘O’ club at the Kaneohe Marine Base. Col. A-house can take his neighbor for a thorough de-briefing.
For July 4, I am thinking of grilling on our gas grill. I found a recipe for shish ka bob. Never made it before.
First, I gotta find metal skewers at Kmart or Target. Isn’t it dangerous to use wooden skewers? Might catch on fire.
Sorry – duplicate posting (#53, #52) but it is a barbeque because it is on top of a barbeque like stove. (usually wood fired).
The cook may stir it around but I guess it is like people at the barbeque pit flipping the meat, vegetables etc around whereas stir-fly usually would mean using a conventional electric or gas stove.
Good mornin everybody!
I got my Stevie Wonder confirmation when I called UH. Support! See you dere!
Just say no to BSU.
The Stevie Wonder concert seems to have a lack of PR or advertising in the papers or TV or the like. Why?
They’re now saying the Mayan’s prediction might have been misinterpreted, which means there will be a UH softball season in 2013.
Ok Gigi…now you’ve done it! My Mongolian friends are calling to complain that you dissed their BBQ.
They told me I can bring hubby, but leave you home.
Mongolia has a beef with Gigi?
That is funny. Metal pots and pans, metal grills, metal skewers, everything taste like metal. lol
Welcome, welcome recruits!
hahaha! You folks crack me up. Totally unexpected repartee.
Mongolians do well in sumo.
Re: “BBQ”… I’m guessing it’s similar to asking “what is Indian Curry? Curry is curry, is curry.” Have you tried that Himalayan Kitchen restaurant? That curry is not even close to the curry I was brought up with. It’s very… um… different. Just saying that we use descriptive terms such as “BBQ” quite loosely. And, our idea of a certain dish or category of food may be far different from how others use it.
Chopsueyboy… Flip Wilson? That was another good fun, crazy show! Smothers Brothers seemed to fight too much… at least for our “young” eyes.
Come to think of it…. “BS” U is not really good initials, huh?
Another student athlete finds his way home!
Jus great! luv it!!!!!!!!!
Gigi… you can soak wooden skewers to keep them from burning. When we used them, we soaked them in room temperature water for about half hour. Clean up is easy… when pau, just throw ’em in da fire!
i met donny and marie while filming their movie “going coconuts”. the showroom that was staged was the one that i ran back in ’78.
Sorry for cheating and combining answers to several posts in one entry. I need to break them up in the future… one post per discussion topic. Been getting lazy, thus lowering our total blog count per day! My apologies!
Lucky buggah! Marie was a cutie back then!
the military bases serve a mongolian bbq at the various clubs. it used to be very popular. but, hey, its not a bbq guys. like tom describes its a stir fry not a bbq.
okay…my last mongolian issue.
what is a mongolian?
chinese or korean or russian?
perhaos a runaway japanese?
and yah, a lot of the sumotori were mongolian, but, didn’t they come from korea?
Mongolia: niece traveled alone thru there. People did not know what or where Hawaii was. So niece’s mom mailed her postcards and she showed it to the people. Awesome! They were so impressed.
ww…yah nice kids. they were teenie boppers back then.
only drink 7 up.
WW – thanks for the info. Now, debating whether to buy metal or wooden skewers. What about splinters in the food?
Kekoa: if you want to take me and hubby to a Mongolian BBQ, we’re game. In fact, we will pay for the meal and treat you and Diane, too.
Gigi… never had problems with splinters. We’ve got metal skewers too. They really get hot. Compared to the wooden ones, they take far longer to cool down to the point when you can handle them. Some guests like to dig into the food right off of the grill, while others display uneasy patience waiting for them to cool down. So, we stick with the wooden ones now. Just don’t reuse them, as one neighbor suggested! (Only time they are reused is when the kids have the marshmallows going.)
WW: OK, will opt for the wooden skewers, then. I didn’t know the metal ones would be too hot to handle. Good to know this.
All this talk bout mongolia..getting me hungry fo kim chee la dat.
If it weren’t fo mongolia….we wouldn’t have stuff like da mongol motor cycle club in America. nice social club.
wuz just joking…..bwaaahahaha!!
Hungarians intermarried with Koreans and move up to Mongolia.
That’s why they are so “hungry”…
Has anyone tried the new barbeques sandwiches from Burger King yet?
They look ono…and cheap.
Kekoa:
my last experience with the Officers Club at MCBH was terrible.
we had the lunch buffet and the last item I ate were the fresh red grapes – within 10 minutes I was puking my guts out and sitting on the toilet at the same time
UGH!!
Don’t forget the Carol Burnett Show … tops in comedy, song, and dance. Watching comedic genius Tim Conway “cracking up” both cast and audience, especially Harvey Korman, would make me laugh till it hurt! One of the funniest scenes in tv history has to be the time Conway played a dentist who accidentally gives himself a novocaine shot and then tries to work on Korman. What makes it funnier is that Korman tries to stay in character, but fails miserably because of Conway’s antics.
I know, off topic, but I laugh just thinking about that scene and had to share.
A-joe, thanks for that vid on Kaleopaa.

Good morning everyone!
Had a Mongolian BBQ a few times in Guam on Anderson AFB. It was exactly as tommui described in #52. Only difference is the stove was outside and we could stand next to it while waiting…so a BBQ??? Unusual shape grill. I agree it is conceptually of stir-fry of sorts and great when you are far from home.
gigi — no splinters 😆

The Mongolian sumo wrestlers are from Mongolia. If they were from Korea they would be Korean sumo wrestlers. Same as the Hawaiian sumotori, from Hawaii.

Yup, Carol Burnett’s Show was non-stop hilarity – soooo many funny characters on that show! It made me laugh just reading your post! 😆
Grapes can give you the runs but not 10 minutes after eating them.
How many spams do we have to subtract before AL or WAFAN scoop in for the 100th position?
splinters on bbq sticks? what?
at least no need buy toothpicks.

Many buffets in Vegas have that type of service at their Asian sections. Usually referred to as “stir-fry”
There are metal skewers made with heavy gauge wire that work amazingly well by eliminating the problem of unusable grill space caused by long, straight skewers. Just string up your chunks and wind things around on the grill in all the empty spaces.
we used to serve filet mignon, potatoes, assorted whole fresh garden veg, en flambe and would parade it around the room.
carve it for the guests with all the fanfare. that flaming sword was a hit back then. sort of liked a giant kabob.
SteveM: you’re on! But it’s gotta be in the evening. Hubby works during the day — and Kekoa mentioned he thinks Mongolian BBQ is offered on Thursdays. Got to double check.
al,
I guess the evolution of that is the “Brazilian Steak House”
Al: they must have soaked the meat in brandy if it was flambe, right?
lol, wrong.
I’m hungry! Thanks a lot guys! Have a great weekend!
@ Jack’s can get takeout for Jojo
Yup. Circular iron griddle about 3′ across. Really a stir-fry in the round. Really need to be careful when mixing the sauce.
Went to one down in Corvallis after the OSU game, too.
Okay, when is the evening cc going to be scheduled?
YUM!
Kekoa: do you need to be military to dine at Ft Shafter? Hubby reminded me that we were able to see a musical at Richardson Theater, but that was years ago.
Somebody should call Kekoa and tell him to read the WB.

Mrs. SB — good guess, but NorthShoreFan is the one who brings a flame thrower for the charcoal. 🙂 But he did bring a propane stove to heat up a wok of oil for deep frying my pork belly side experiment once.

A-joe must really want to join us for Mongolian BBQ. Lol.

Here’s a restaurant that I visited in Reno. It’s called Genghis Grill and is a franchise that started in Lubbock, Texas and expanded. It was pretty good. You can buy single serving signature dishes or you can go Tsaiko and get the all-you-can-eat!
http://www.genghisgrill.com/index.php
Unfortunately, Genghis Grill has yet to conquer Hawaii. So, if you ever find yourself near a GG location, I recommend trying it.
No news about BSU’s situation as of yet?
SteveM
Tnks again for setting up the cruiser call. Where did you get the crispy roast pork from? I used to like Lins at Liliha square, but they are long gone. A restaurant in Market City has some good stuff, but kind of out the way for me.
Gigi:
Grapes, like many other fruits, can carry different diseases/fungus/virus and if not washed clean can make “hay” with your pomp/stomach.
same for fresh veggies – friend contracted hepatitis B and died from eating salad at a restaurant.
SteveM – HeinekenHealer?
58. Tommui. The Stevie Wonder concert is a fundraiser. They sent advance email notices to corporate sponsors, package season ticket holders (AKA), etc., first. General annoucnement and advertising will start next week…
A-House: thanks for the heads up. Good thing you told me.
Hubby and I are scheduled to receive Hepatitis A and B shots tomorrow at Straub. Doctor recommended it because we are going to India for 15 days later this year.
Also he recommended malaria pills.
lakesidegt– I went to the old Lin’s location too since it is just down Liliha for me. Nice Day dim sum restaurant. I would rely on Al or tommui to say where the good char siu and roast pork is now, besides Fong’s.
The Nice Day roast port is fairly comparable to the old Lin’s. I buy char siu elsewhere though.

#140 – OTTO – thanks for the info!
Per Google, there is a Mongolian bbq on Jasmine Street – Kaimuki. I don’t know how current the information is.
I remember there was one down in the Chinatown Plaza and he moved it later to a site across from the Convention Center and then to Waikiki (or vice versa) but I only went to the one in the Chinatown Plaza. My kids really liked it – but of course that was about 20-years ago!
Tom: when I told hubby about Mongolian BBQ today, he reminded me we went to the one in the Cultural Plaza many years ago. I don’t quite remember what it looked like. Nor do I remember how the food tasted.
ajoe I not sure if I am the first or if SteveM is referring to being first or just when he shows up. but I had a pic taken and put in the pics of shots taken at tgate back in 09.
if winna ajoe get the chicken dinna.
gigi — since you select the ingredients, quantity, and sauce(s) you place in your dish prior to being cooked, the taste can vary greatly. I suppose one could only judge the quality and variety of the ingredients. The taste is literally in your hands. 🙂
I am referring to gas grill and wok usage …. not even sure if the chow fun w/ homey or the fried rice and eggs w/ jj was same years.
have a good day
btw if you not in you in the way……saw this on a tshirt
E kala mai Gigi.
Just returned from my cousin’s funeral up at Punchbowl. The usual reception gathering followed, with a wild assortment of ethnic grinds.
Yes, I will be open to planning a Thursday for the stir fry dinner formerly known as a Mongolian BBQ. It may be easier to stop by your hale and pick you up. That way you won’t have to do the ‘Perp Walk’thru the security check point, as they strip search you.
Hep shots A & B? Ouch! They are the original pain-in-the-a$$ shots. Try not to sit down to quickly.
I completely agree with you. I just wish others will acknowledge as well.
Yet primary we’ll be ‘squeezed’ due to the fact i am thus challenging to help you replacing your out of date methods.nike This may bunck outside lots of people however , fed up individuals just like one self can get the completely together with efficiently important it’s likely you’ll get asking to get even more. That may be both equally having a positive along with damaging.
Kekoa: mahalo! Your limousine too? Way to go! Name the date and time.
hey, those shots? thought they were in the arm not the okole!
if the magolian bbq is the style of cooking as described by tommui there is one like it in the food court at pearl ridge next to the movie plex
Here are some representative pictures:

the military clubs had mongolian bbq nights out of desperation since none had been known to have hired a top chef.
for some clubs, it killed them when in the mid ’90’s they then had to turn a profit to remain open. the mongolian bbq concept was that they charged you by the ounce for what you loaded your bowl with. they didn’t have the wherewithal to charge a fee for the rice, beverages, and labor costs let alone know what to actually charge.
its been a year since i last had a meal at camellia.
if your talking big grill then my vote is northshore fan that I can recall
btw mine is a desk top gas grill and no stones, wooe or charcoal, just gas propane hooked up

Georgia tailback, Isaiah “Crowell, was arrested at a vehicle checkpoint on the Georgia campus at around 2:20 a.m., according to Athens-Clarke Police Department spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow. Among the charges he faces are carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon on school property. He was dismissed from the team Friday by coach Mark Richt. As a freshman in 2011, Crowell led Georgia with 850 yards rushing. Crowell, 19, came to UGA in 2011 as the top-rated running back prospect in the country out of Carver High School in Columbus, Ga.”

SteveM
Must be before I joined you guys because no one has used a gas grill as you decribed at any of the T-gates that I have gone to.
SteveM: Koakane said he uses a gas grill. If he is the one, then A-Joe wins. Lol.
HiFlyer — Great observation! The 2nd half of your sentence is correct and should be enough to reveal the mystery griller.
Actually, I suspect Al has already figured it out but doesn’t want to win a Mongolian BBQ dinner… 👿
We go from Waialae just off of 12th, the side street from Duk Kee- Mongolian BBQ,
to Duke University to announce a new qb from there to join Chow at UH according
to Mike Cherry, on 6pm news…
Actually, he’s not Duke’s first string qb, but anyhow a fairly good 3-star high
school recruit who supposedly graduated in three years. So he must be pretty
smart, too.
wow, we have so many quarterbacks.
Ipu Man:
No, it’s not official yet. He hasn’t been admitted into grad school. Without that, he can’t transfer or be eligible to play.. We’ve all been waiting for official word for about three weeks.
Still, it’s a nice tie in to Duk Kee- Mongolian BBQ…
And thanks Stephen for steppin in on your vacation and commenting about it.
Can you shoot down some of the $bammers?
That way we can have an honest 200 count for you.
🙄
Ipu Man:
Everything is hopeful and on track, but this situation is fragile.
By the way, I’m convinced I’m not needed here. You guys have kept the conversations lively with great wit and stories.
I appreciate all of the contributions.
I think you made a mistake on the direction of Coach’s walk– I believe it is from Diamond Head to Hau’ula– I could be wrong
SteveM ~ I used a propane stove to warm my King crab legs at cabana ‘A’ once during the 2008 season. Prior to that, I believe Koakane was the 1st wen he used his to grill some Kalding.
Later, during the 2010 season, NSF came to Pavillion #5 with his Thunderstick gas flame thrower. It was used to light the charcoal in his x-Large BBQ grill. He could stand across the street and light his grill, our grill and all the people sitting at the first row of tables.
Therefore my guess would be Koakane…or maybe…
Kaleo:
You’re right.
Thanks for the correction.
I saw over the weekend that the BoSox wanted Gerardo Parra from AZ for Youk. Parra is having a solid season at 25 with yrs of control. The Sawx GM is smoking crack if he thinks a half season of a rapidly deteriorating Youk is worth Parra.
Just returned from the CC.
As usual, what happens and is said there stays there.
Congratulations Michael Martin! What a fine representative of UH and its student athletes. Way to go!
koakane,
The Corner Kitchen on channel 5 right now….
SteveM,
(J)J
Slugger: A-Joe guessed JJ at 1:45 pm. Lol.
Ah, well, who was it? I didn’t start joining T-gates till 2008…
hmmmmm…
Would love to be on your mailing list, but cannot register. If I can do it here that would be great!
Hmmm, that’s why this contest is surprisingly difficult….but like I said, when people see the answer. it’ll be. “Oh yeah…that’s right…” 🙂
Never had the pleasure of watching chopsueyboy grill.
A-joe– nope. But to give a hint, you have seen him at a gas grill …cooking meat, chicken, sausages, etc….
I’m thinking of a typical gas BBQ grill like you buy at the outdoor stores.
Here are some representative pictures:
http://bbq.about.com/od/gasgrills/tp/aatp062109a.htm
The BBQ grill might have a layer of lava cinder rocks (but not charcoal) between the gas burners and the fuud rack.
Does incoming players start arriving on campus next week?
Kazz.
I get pleasure from, result in I discovered exactly what I was taking a look for. You’ve ended my four day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a great day. Bye
We wait and see. He hasn’t thrown one pass as a college QB.
Hala…..Mike Cherry!
Unauthorized leaks not likely to be tolerated!
HNN not scoring any brownie points with UH football coaches. First was Chris “Tanaka” mentioning Dirk Koetter as the “first choice” rather than pumping up Coach Chow’s hiring. Now, Mike Cherry reporting on something that shouldn’t be until he is accepted into school. Who else they got left in the Sports Department? I know which station will NOT be getting any interviews.
If Chris Tanaka & Mike Cherry didn’t previously know that they had crossed the line, I bet that they know now!
Wouldn’t want to be either of them right about now!
Gotta believe that HNN not likely to get the Coach’s Show renewed anytime soon!
that 12th ave mongolian bbq didn’t last very long.
personally, i never cared for the style or lack thereof.
OCSports is getting the coaches’ show.
