Another fund-raiser, another big haul.
Last night’s Na Koa dinner raised about $70,000, of which $30,000 came from the silent auction. Proceeds will benefit the UH football program.
Next up: Murphy’s Pigskin Pigout on Aug. 23.

Na Koa should be targeting either the guy who bought Lanai (Larry Ellison) or the guy who received $600 million from the sale (David Murdock). Or both.

Former UH slotbacks Greg Salas (St. Louis Rams) and Kealoha Pilares (Carolina Panthers) are back in town.
“We’re hanging out, working out and enjoying some vacation,” Salas said.
On the itinerary is another run up Koko Head.
“We’ll hit that up, for sure,” Salas said.
Salas said he is fully healed from a broken bone in his leg suffered in November. He participated in the Rams’ OTAs and mini-camp. He also is happy to be back at his second home.
“I love it out here,” Salas said. “Whenever I get a chance to come back, I do.”
Salas will be attending Joey Lipp’s wedding on July 9 in Hawaii. Salas and Lipp were teammates in high school and UH.

It was near the end of The Greatest’s career, and Muhammad Ali could no longer float like a butterfly or sting like a bee. He continued to fight, but he was no longer Muhammad Ali. It was like Journey without Steve Perry, “American Idol” without Simon.
Which brings us to the Rainbow Classic.
Eight-team tournaments, with the winners’ bracket played in Hawaii’s prime time, are no longer feasible between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. And, yes, it is understandable if there is some cushion to a schedule, especially with a young team. Not every game needs to be like an NBA playoff. But to call a four-team tournament in November the Rainbow Classic — especially when it includes the redundantly named Maryland Eastern Shore — is just wrong.
Yes, it’s sad that the once prestigious holiday format is gone. But it’s also sad that gas is no longer $2.50 a gallon. Time change. Things end. And if the Rainbow Classic couldn’t be brought back to its former glory, then it would have been OK if it remained a fond memory.

Eastern Shore is actually not redundant – Maryland wraps around the Chesapeake Bay so if you start in the middle of the state and head east, you can cross over the Chesapeake and end up on the Eastern Shore – of the Cheaspeake. The crabs, fish and oysters there are really good.
Na Koa should have been targeting Dave Murdoch a long time ago. I would say target Mr. Ellison, but he doesn’t really have a stake in Hawaii football. Mr. Murdoch has been a part of the Hawaiian culture for a very long time, so he would have more vested in UH.

Thought the Rainbow Classic was doing good? That bites! Seems that lots of things we HAD going for us (in a national scope) are dying off. We need to seriously refocus our attention to this and fix it. We’re going backwards.
What do we need to do to really make an impact in Asia and the Pacific? We need to be THAT team… THE team of Asia and the Pacific. We need international money flowing in to show the bigs that we’re worth something to their bottom line.

That article is pretty detailed. Colt’s haters will come out of course but his story of perseverance is pretty remarkable. The thing that kills me is when Green Bay said they passed on him because he played in warm weather. They drafted Matt Flynn later in that draft. Flynn just signed a deal worth 25 mil or something.

And the Best West turning down BSU – various articles here and there (MWC, etc) seem to think that SDSU may have some problems also going to the Big East without BSU. There was a suggestion of BSU and SDSU joining the WAC for its Olympic sports which would sort of “save” the WAC with its teams other than football.
There is also a mention that if BSU does not join the Big East THIS year, the TV negotiations between the Big East and the network might result in a lesser amount. Of course the Big East – with or without BSU – has its own problems with some of its basketball teams possibly deflecting to the ACC!

I like the idea of the four-team playoff. I mean, it’s inadequate and short-sighted and, yes, the SEC will fight to get two teams in, but it is a start.
The BCS had had a playoff — it was a two-team playoff.
So, going to four is huge. And with six BCS conferences and only four playoff spots, there will be an outcry. And when the NCAA realizes that the playoffs are exciting and make money, but they can be more exciting and make more money if they expand, they will expand. That’s the reason the NBA is playing in June and the World Series is near Halloween.
The thing is, it will never go back to two teams. So there is progress. Slight, but some progress.
Meanwhile, Coach Gib’s team continues to be decimated.

Gotta disagree about the Rainbow Classic. I think that trying to resurrect the Classic is an admirable effort to effect tradition and is worth a try. The teams enlisted to play may not be of the highest caliber, nor is it easy to classify a four team field a “classic”, but I think it can be brought back to be a viable tournament with some grit and sponsorship. Of course there’s no salesman better than winning. Even when “The Greatest” was on he decline he used persistence and ingenuity to rope-a-dope Foreman when no one thought he had a chance. A November foursome may not have the same festive glamour as a December eightsome, but maybe eating turkey is better than cooking the goose.
Wow, thanks for cleaning up the spam, ST. Another fabulous dinner last night, raising funds for football camp. Coach Chow shared the story that ST posted about before…of the man who was about to be deployed, but got to see his kids in camp because of the low cost. Kudos to Chevron’s Al Chee for spearheading the dinner and Al’s community relations superstar, Carina Tagupa, for putting together the silent auction – $30K just a few hours!

College football fans can thank the SEC for finally providing the impetus for such a remarkably fast about-face. Oh, some folks out there may be sick of hearing about the SEC, but that dislike is exactly what got us to where we now stand.
Let’s look at a quick timeline, shall we?
* 1869 — The first college football game is played in Princeton, New Jersey.
(Fast-forward 123 years…)
* 1992 — The Bowl Coalition is founded to include the ACC, Big East, Big 8, SEC, SWC, and Notre Dame. It involved the Orange, Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, Gator and John Hancock Bowls. The Big Ten, Pac-10 and Rose Bowl would not take part.
* 1995 — The Bowl Alliance is founded to include the ACC, Big East, Big 8, SEC, SWC, and Notre Dame, but it involved only the Sugar, Orange and Fiesta Bowls. The Big Ten, Pac-10 and Rose Bowl still would not take part.
* 1998 — The Bowl Championship Series is founded to include the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, SEC and three FBS independents. It utilized the Sugar, Orange, Fiesta and Rose Bowls. Eventually, the BCS Championship Game was created as a fifth, stand-alone game in order to allow non-AQ teams a better shot at reaching a BCS game (and to fend off lawyers and legislators representing the plankton of college football’s food chain).
* 2008 — SEC commissioner Mike Slive and ACC commissioner John Swofford push a four-team, seeded playoff idea to their fellow commissioners. They were shot down immediately.
* January, 2011 — The SEC wins its fifth BCS Championship in a row. Conference commissioners and university presidents remained dead set against a playoff of any kind.
* December 5, 2011 — Immediately following the announcement that LSU would play Alabama in an all-SEC rematch in the BCS Championship Game, we wrote: “A rematch in the title game. A possible split championship. A non-conference (and non-division) champion with an opportunity to grab the brass ring. With enough controversy, a seeded plus-one format might begin to gain some traction among schools. It wouldn’t be tough to do. In this year’s case, #1 LSU would face #4 Stanford in a bowl game while #2 Alabama met #3 Oklahoma State in another. The winners would advance to a national title game the following week. And for those who’ll say that wouldn’t solve all the issues, a fifth-ranked team has a lot less reason to moan than a third-ranked team. This is clearly the best plan for college football and it’s remarkable that the powers-that-be refuse to embrace the obvious.”

* July 26, 2012 — The BCS Presidential Oversight Committee approves a four-team playoff which is pretty much the same seeded, Plus-One model Swofford and Slive presented years ago.
Notice how that timeline sped up just as the SEC’s dominance reached a crescendo?
There has always been big television money on the table for a college football playoff. But a playoff wasn’t in the offing.
The majority of fans have always wanted a college football playoff. But the P-word remained a dirty word to conference commissioners. Debate has always raged over a “true” national champion, whether decided by polls, Coalition, Alliance, or Championship Series. But a playoff remained a non-starter.
Yet now we’re getting a playoff. And the only thing that changed was the SEC winning six titles in a row and — more importantly — the league landing two teams in January’s BCS Championship Game.
College football fans of America, you might hate the SEC. You might not have been interested in watching a title game rematch between Alabama and LSU. But it was the SEC’s dominance and that very rematch that angered every college football power broker outside the South enough to change their post-season system after nearly a century-and-a-half.

would it be hilarious if those 2 conferences top teams have less than 10 wins and not ranked within the top 10 teams at year’s end.
therefore, even if UH should go undefeated in 2012, there is no way in hell that they will be considered for the national championship game – why? because the power brokers will not allow it to happen!!!

Seriously, I was never a fan of BCS but I do like the rivalries between schools, especially when they aren’t in the same conference, and when they end up playing in the bowls. Does that sound weird. That’s fine, because I am weird
was it 2 years ago that BSU and TCU were ranked within the top 6 teams and the power brokers decided that they would play in the same bowl game
this was to prevent an embrassment if both won their respective bowl game – thus casting doubt on the power of the BCS conference teams.

Sugar Bowl 2008 was destined to be for various reasons – Georgia should have been playing Ohio State for the National Championship rather than LSU – very poor and biased officiating -Orange Bowl committee decided against Hawaii citing questionable fan support – certain coach let his team down when the players heard, in the locker room, he was leaving – players allowed this to affect their performance in the game – don’t know if any UH player stood up and yelled, “let’s play this game for US”.
perhaps, that’s why I like the military in that even if a General or Flag officer bums out, the 2nd Lt leading his platoon will still carry out his mission – reminds me of Pork Chop Hill in the last days of the Korean Conflict where everyone was waiting for the “truce agreement” announcement and a certain command was given the order to “take this hill” – why? to show the Chinese and North Koreans that the United Nations meant business.
I wonder why such a surprise about Orel. It is mandatory for all Israeli’s, male and female, to serve 2 years in the military. It’s an honor they hold on to. At the end of basic training, they SPRINT in full combat attire and backpack up to the top of Mount Masada.

Although I know that the new playoff system is a first step toward a true playoff, I still don’t like the way they’ve set it up. It won’t be long before you’ll have the SEC, PAC12, Big 10, and Big XII being the four teams that will be in the playoff. Now, it would be funny if the “committee” picked 3 SEC teams to be in the playoff (which I’m not sure would be possible) and one team from another conference…I think at that point the cries for a true playoff system would be deafening.

To get things fair, some people making the calls behidn the scenes need to taken out back and given the Old Yeller “treatment”.
It’s sad because I think for the most part, people that have administrative power originally start out as good people with good intentions but over time, greed and ego takes over and by then you’ve lost sight of why you got placed in charge or how you got to the point of being able to get such power.
“You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villian”.

Howzit, Kekoa! No Piggly Wiggly in our area. Closest is up in Gainesville, out east around Georgia Bulldog country, or south of us from Atlanta on down. Our area only has Publix and Krogers, along with those mega-Wal-Marts. I don’t recall these remodeled Target stores having fresh meats and produce. Think it’s all shelf and fridge/freezer stuff.
And the playoff thing? As we’ve discussed in years past, the one that (J)J mentions above at 10:47 am is the most sensible… playoff between all FBS conference champs. Use the polls to seed the conference champs, and that’s it. Money made by the playoffs goes into a beeeeg cauldron. Pay outs are done based on final standings of the conference champs. This way, every conference shares in growing, instead of the present rich-getting-richer scheme, and the poor burning bridges behind them trying to grab onto that bumper.

Hmm.. Men BB lost another player.. the guy from Israel due to military issues… too bad. The hardest thing about Men’s BB is that it’s so difficult to get excited about a team when you haven’t become familiar with most of the players.

Yes. Dark Knight Rises looks to be good. Thank God Christopher Nolan and David S Goyer saved the Batman franchise from leaving a cartoonish legacy.
The last Batman movies with Val Kilmer and George Clooney were just awful.
The last two Batman Begins and Dark Knight had great storytelling and better acting, plus believeable villians.
Sad to see that this will be the last of the trilogy.

At the end, when DiCaprio spun his totem, I was thinking to myself “oh damn, they better not cut the film before we find out what is real and what is not”. Sure enough when it did cut out, some guy in the theater yelled “damnit!!!”.
Very few movies get a round of applause from the audience right in the theater, but the end of Dark Knight and Inception the packed theater at Regal Cinemas in Pearl City applauded. It was pretty cool.

In Inception, As soon as they started pushing in on that shot I was thinking the same exact thing. I was living in SoCal when I watched the midnight screening of The Dark Knight in IMAX… Everyone in the theater was also clapping, some were standing up and clapping. No one left the theater until the lights came back on and security forced people to leave. It was great… I think I waited 8 hours in line to get good seats for me and my friends.
Regarding Israeli military service:

In addition to the “Outstanding Athlete”, Israel also has the “Outstanding Dancer” and “Outstanding Musician”. So, to think that Israel doesn’t have an “Outstanding Actor” exemption wouldn’t be surprising. Besides, I heard that half who are supposed to serve don’t even bother signing up for whatever reason.

Yes, Gigi. Women are required to serve for two years, instead of three like the men. Also, the Israeli Army has an open gay policy. And from what I read, it seems to be widely accepted.
I still remember when I went to Tel Aviv once and noticed so many young adults in civilian clothing lugging around an M-16 around their shoulders. The airport was even worse when it came to military presence. Try picturing TSA carrying UZI’s and MP-5’s. It’s such a beautiful place. To bad the beauty is marred by the constant threat of terrorist bombings.

Coach Gib said that although he’s sad to see Orel go, the team will be fine. He likes the team chemistry next year and Orel was on the fringe of being the 8th or 9th player off the bench. He will miss his athleticism and work ethic.

Felt very uneasy about the initial hiring of Gib.
Ask the people that I sat with during a men’s volleyball game when Arnold was introduced as the new HC after the 2nd set intermission……. (yeah, they remember what I did)
Anyway, that was based on the mutterings of a hiring process marred by supposed connections and favoritism or whatever. I felt uneasy, I felt he won the job because he had a great interview. I also personally felt he got the job because he was the ‘Anti-McMackin’ at the time and bringing in a young charasmatic individual made most people feel better.
Old posts will show that I felt he’d dig out when the chance came along with another job offer.
Well, Gib was 19-10 in his first season and it was a better brand of basketball. I enjoyed myself at the games for sure. The following season was a sophomore slump and despite the shortcomings, far too early to call for a replacement.. it was only his second season.
Fast forward to today and the happenings since the end of the fall 2011 season.
Not going to claim “I saw those people leaving”.
Not going to claim “I knew he’d try to sign non-qualifiers”.
It was other things that I never felt comfortable with from the get-go.
Interesting how things turn out.

joston thomas leaving was no surprise he’ll probably end up in europe. the two year he spent here was the longest stint he’s had in five years. he was a good college player not an exceptional one,.
bobby miles was overmatched every game in spite of his efforts. good move on his part. interesting note is that he may be replaced by keith shamburger whom the gibber wanted before he settled for miles.
trevor wiseman has been a hothead since his sophmore year in hs. somethings never changed he was a hustle guy who was an overachiever who would be better off at the next level.

you could fault the coach but, it just goes to show that no matter what it is hard to recruit mbb to the netherlands of hawaii way out in the pacific. at least you can’t fault him for the effort.
going the international route is still his best avenue as history has proven that. he understands that. it takes time to build a program especially one so unique as we are.
jm2375 it is possible. come in january sit out then either compete in the fall or redshirt. it is a rare situation however, i think orel did that, hoping that he’d be allowed to attend school.
