Camp fire
Remember that old commercial with the slogan — Is it live or is it Memorex? (Here’s the link: Memorex.)
The burning question the past two weeks at the UH camps: Is fiery camp director Chris “Demo” Demarest using a megaphone or not?
Either way, Demo has captivated campers with a booming voice of encouragement and inspiration. He’s done a great job.
Today is the last day for the UH team camp. One of the highlights was the participation of 11 members of American Samoa’s Tafuna High. (Fun fact: Tafuna’s nickname is the Warriors.)
Tafuna’s top player, quarterback Daniel Fereti, attended the team camp. Here’s his highlight video (please, adjust your head): Fereti video.
Tafuna offensive coordinator Loso Iaulualo discusses the UH camp: Coach video.

Happy birthday to Hawaii’s strongest media member — Brenda Salgado of Hawaii News Now.
Yeah baby
One
Everyone sleeping
Thanks coach for bringing your kids. It is truly a blessing for everyone who participated.
Thanks ST for the video!
Wow! Kinda early for a top 5, but…
“Win, lose, or tie… Warriors ’til we die.”
Only one play, then someone got hurt…
Coach Iaulualo has a huge sparkly thing on his neck… like Mr. T.
It’s good that they get a chance for more exposure here. Is this the same team (school) that came last year, on their way to the All-Poly Camp?
Morning! Will check back later to watch videos after more zzzzzz’s! Have a good hump day!
Good morning Tsaikos.
ST thank you. good videos.
Good Hump Day!
Celebration Day — no more wake ups to go!
Whoo-hoo!!!
1st day of summer, too.
I think it officially starts at just after 4 (1p HST) this afternoon.
Mid to upper 70s and clear skies.
^^98 degrees and humid here in NY…
98 degrees is pretty hot at 9:19 am in NY. That is if the time stamp on the post is accurate. I don’t think even Phoenix or Vegas can reach that temp that early. Well, maybe Phoenix. I remember it gets so hot there that pet owners would buy their pets shoes because the sidewalks or roads would reach some unbearable temperatures.
Did you know that Castle & Cooke is trying to sell Lanai? This is the first I have heard of this.
http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/story/2012-06-19/lanai-potential-sale/55698846/1
I heard of playing on an “even-field” but that fereti-video just proved to me that vertical playing field is possible. bwaaaahahaha!! made me dizzzzzy-la-dat!
Why is it many think Fresno State is leaving the MWC for the Big East ?
************
Does the Big West require a quorum before they can take a vote? If enough BW members decided not to vote on the the BSU application would it just die ?
************
RE: 15 – it’s currently 86 at 8:42 a.m. local and expected high is 112 in Phoenix.
My car needs to be washed but I’m just not feeling it .
Didnt mean 98 degrees then. 98 is our high today… But mine just got a hell of a lot better. My supplier called me and has his Yankees tix for matinee game…. First row behind Yankee dugout!! Woohoo!
If the Heat are the World Champs the Heat should give the refs rings also.
Great Morning All!
Is it Saturday yet?!?!?!
Good morning, gang!
Laters…
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
And more power to all us locals at this hour. (Not to mention WAFAN up at 5:00 PDT – hey, school’s out!)
No kidding on “adjust your head”! The Fereti video was all over the place! The Tafuna offensive coordinator Loso Laulualo video was very good! It’s great that as many team members got to come to experience the UH camp in Hawaii! Perhaps some future players for UH will come from this Tafuna Warrior team! Go Warriors!
So many schools announced their 2010-2011 NCAA Academic Progress Rate yesterday ahead of the official announcement but not UH .
The end is near!
30-minutes to go.

and now… the time has come … the end is near … the final curtain…
and yes… my friends… Wafan’s gonna dig… of that i’m certain….
make yo move Wafan… make yo move….

Always will be my favorite Warrior receiver (as hard as it was to choose)!
Remember Iaulualo from his Waipahu days in the early ’80’s…Mr. Everything for them back then…
Last Call, re #19, the Big East will have 13 football members when Navy joins in 2016 and needs to add one more western football-only member by then to even things out at 14. The conference’s #1 and #2 targets are BYU and Air Force, but both have already turned down offers. The word out of the Big East meetings a couple of weeks ago was that the conference plans to try again after negotiating its new TV deal this fall. If both BYU and Air Force pass again, there’s speculation Fresno State may be invited as the fallback choice.
**************
Regarding the Big West’s decision whether to add Boise State, my understanding is that a 3/4 majority of the ten schools that will comprise the conference in 2013 (which includes both UH and San Diego State but excludes Pacific) must approve any new member invitation. That means eight yes votes are needed. I doubt there will be a formal ballot taken until it’s clear Boise State has eight yes votes.
If I’m reading this right the NCAA.org web site says that UH Men’s Basketball received a APR Public Recognition Award for the 2010-2011 academic year.
http://web1.ncaa.org/maps/aprRecognitionAwards.jsp
you know hawaii is on that short list of big east potentials.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Is it football yet?
Congrats to wafan for making it through another school year!
my neck is sore from watching that vertical video.
great connections for all the local kids and the samoa boys as well.
ST, you didn’t lock the door to yesterday’s fun. Da spam stay multiplying.

Good morning everyone!
Honolulu forecast of 83 high and 73 low tonight.
Don’t need shoes. 🙂
It was only 79 degrees inside the house at 9:45 this morning, but I turned on the a/c anyway because of the humidity. Ahhhh, heavenly cool.
SteveM: hubby and I will see India this year, and NEXT YEAR, we want to see SE Asia by land. That’s the plan, anyway…

NCAA honors 2 UH teams for academic performance.
The University of Hawaii’s women’s cross country and men’s basketball teams have been honored by the NCAA for academic performance.
They received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for standing in the top 10 percent in Academic Progress Rates through the 2010-11 academic year, according to the NCAA website.
Women’s cross country had a perfect score of 1,000 while men’s basketball posted a 990. The figures take in a four-year period (2007-’08, 2008-’09, 2009-’10 and 2010-’11) and help measure eligibility and retention of scholarship athletes.
The Division I APR average was 973, the NCAA said.

re: mbb apr. if they left in good academic standing then it is not a hit.
btw, i believe it is the foreign players who typically have the higher gpa’s. rozitis reportedly has 3.8 gpa for example.
#21 Don’t be a Hater. The refs are human and making mistakes on both sides. It all evens out.
GO HEAT!!!
WarriorDave:

Is Loso a former waipahu qb in the early 80’s?
Don’t know if Loso is a former Waipahu QB.
I do know he looks rather big.
At first, I was like, “Darn, I cover the two lowest-scoring APR teams.”
And, then I figured, “Hey, those are Derek Inouchi’s teams, too.”
Institutional control, and all.
Does Larry Ellison like CFB?
*drowning in a sea of SPAM*
Four team playoff huh.
I do not like them on a log
I do not like them in a blog
I do not like the trolls and spam
I do not like them Tsai-I-am
Very clever, Jimmy.
A-House, …your comment about “WHOA – just like them good ole American cowboys!”
reminded me of a cute Japanese girl who worked in a store here in Hawaii who would
tell her customers to “hold their horses” because her local boy friend always said that to her, and she took it to be the proper local way to mean “please wait”.
🙄
She would actually say, “Hold your horses, please…”
The spammers should say:
“Oh
Wha
Tegu
Tsai-am…”
really fast
seven times…
I wonder what an NCAA Public Recognition Award looks like? Is it a plaque? A trophy? Banner?
Written in crayon on the backside of used paper?
Spelling not guaranteed.
With 954 NCAA Division I sports teams honored by the NCAA for earning Public Recognition Awards.
I would think it’s only on paper. NCAA can’t afford plaque or trophies.
The ‘BCS’ has all the funds.
According to the SA, Brenda Salgado snatched 40kg (88lbs.) and cleaned 50kg (110lbs.).
Brenda is a strong woman.
And she wears cool weight-lifting shoes.
But I have to hand it to Gib team for UH Basketball Team Excellence Award to attain the score of 990 points only 10 points of the mark of perfect score.
UH Basketball Team is the ‘Harvard of the West’.
Strong human.
Dartmouth had the most teams (23) recognized, followed by Brown (20) and Harvard (18).
The Lanai Warriors, playing in Oracle Stadium, in the Ellison Bowl. Or is it the Ellison Stadium, home to the Oracle Bowl.
I have a cousin, Guy, from Lanai, although his last name is not Tsai.
Is Vitamina d3 a relative of d1?
I truly appreciate this blog post.Much thanks again. Much obliged.
So Larry Ellison is purchasing Lanai, huh?
All I remember of Ellison is that in the darkest hours of Apple, he and Steve Jobs were iconic in challenging the M$ empire. Jobs & Ellison versus Gates. I don’t know how much is fact and how much is myth, but I am kinda glad it is Ellison buying it.
I like that, wafan!
Welcome Larry Ellison…
Hope you become a UH fan.
howzit 808 at least trades are back
not sure what to expect on Lanai island sale
much mixed emotions and feelings from Haw’n communities
kden
http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/20/us/hawaii-ellison-island/index.html?hpt=hp_c2
You think that now that he owns 98% of Lanai, he can donate something to the UH program…
now
knew some lurkers just waiting to pounce … glad to push the blog along
lattas and esmeeeeeeeree
Maybe Ellison will be UH’s sugar Daddy like T. Boone Pickens to Okla State and Phil Knight to Oregon? And if he is really good to UH, name a plate lunch or saimin after him.
Just hope Ellison doesn’t encourage wind farms on his pristine property.
Even in windy Japan, it failed. Hope instead he encourages transistor-size
power packages now being developed by scientists. No need to destroy the
land.
Just saw this is Wikipedia under Larry Ellison “Charitiable Donations::
As such, I would not expect overt gestures, and probably not to sports (except maybe the sailing team 😕 ) Also note that Oracle owns Sun Microsystems. High end UNIX base.
Don’t get a stiff neck! Watch Daniel Fereti scramble without turning your head. LOL!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQin3IfQbMc&feature=youtu.be
Can we as a state raise property taxes on lanai by 100%. To pay for our schools education progra,s and of course…..’UH Football!! I see the entire state gaining; one guy going to get frustrated but that’s what he should expect for buying an island…
Btw- not even this guy coulda gt my yanks tix today… First row behind the dugout. I could rest my beer on the dugout.
ah…thanks sportsbow. i think.
nearly got motion sickness watching that video. must be how some folks felt like on the oosterdam.
lanai has been renamed to….ellis(on) island.
perhaps the four seasons koele and manalele will have free macs in each room.
Mr. Ellison is a tennis buff—he even bought the pro tournament
to keep it in America. He doesn’t look too healthy, so hope he
falls in love with Hawaii and leaves a bit of his charitable contributions
around the state—before he kicks the can.
Stay classy….
🙄
…before the Angels come to take him to his everlasting home…?
Slugger,
Mahalo!
Sorry to Mr. Ellison. I’m a bit blunt. But sometimes that
personal trait is good for friends. Anyhow, I wish him the
best from one human being to another. We all are equal
when we are born. Only he did a better job at life than
most of us.
warriorny, he don’t need to get tickets to ny games, he could buy the team. lol.
don’t know if the sale of C&C is final, but if Mr Ellison is the buyer, welcome to Hawaii and hope you and your family get to enjoy all the customs and tradition this great state has to offer.
Because he was friends with Harvard’s then President, he donated millions
to that school but opted out when his friend left that institution…
Wonder if coach Chow could scout out Lanai and maybe lie out on the
beach under a coconut tree with a fruity drink and maybe catch Mr. Ellison’s
attention…and become friends.
Off-topic –
MPI is looking for a new girls vb head coach. This would make it the 3rd HC in 3 years. 😈
How terrible I am…thinking only of his money.
I repent. Hereafter, I will refrain. And as Whitey wrote,
I hope the best of Hawaii for him and his loved ones.
could this be coming true?
…”and a selection committee picking the participants”…
hmmmmm…who are the “pickers”? And who are the “pickees”?
The same old BCS schools?
more readings
Re: BCS 4-team playoff… Funny how there is zero mention of the NCAA in the whole selection process (so far). Our guess of the Elitists picking from a pool of Elitists is probably a safe assumption.
This proposed four-team playoff system seems to be headed in the right direction. However, since strength of schedule – along with conference championships – would be a factor in deciding what team gets to the playoff, I would think smaller schools would need to schedule a gauntlet of non-conference bodybag games to even raise eyebrows. Boise State (while in the MWC), under the proposed plan, wouldn’t get them any closer to a National Championship because of their weak schedule and weak conference affiliation. Boise being in the BE might get them a little closer tho. I dunno…we’ll see I guess.
