Booking coach?
It is no surprise OC Sports is considered the leading contender to land the UH head football coach’s television show. Oceanic Cable has the television rights to UH sports, and its designated channel — digital 12 — is in need of supplemental programming.
Hawaii News Now had served as producer of the Coach Mack Show.

Initial plans call for offensive tackle Levi Legay, who is suffering from a back injury, to serve as a student coach during his senior season in 2012. Legay did not participate in spring training because of the ailment. He started 11 games in 2011. Legay will remain on scholarship.

Middle blocker Rey Speller is hopeful of joining the volleyball Warriors.
Speller, who last played for Golden West College in 2011, is awaiting admission into UH.
Nick West is UH’s only returning middle with experience as an NCAA starter. Jarrod Lofy completed his eligibility at the end of the 2012 season. The Warriors and Shane Welch mutually agreed to part ways earlier this month. UH recently signed Long Beach City middle Aniefre Etim-Thomas. Davis Holt also will be back for his sophomore season.

WOW!
First 1st in a long time!!!
Thrilling Aloha Friday to everyone . . .
M/M d1 show up in the area and the weather cooperates.
Sheesh.
Should be in the mid-70’s with some high clouds.
That is sad for Legay, but I’m sure he’ll help the young members of the OL as much as he can…but it is sad when an injury forces someone to watch instead of play during their senior year.
Good Morning!
ST: Do you think it is wise to reserve the Coach Chow Show for Oceanic? That will mean people who don’t have cable will be unable to watch the show. Fewer fans?
I am glad that there are continent plans for Legay instead of just excluding him from the team. Sorry he is in pain from his back injury.
Just got my daily Kaumeyer.
Good luck to Colt heading up North.
And to someone returning, well, half-way anyway.

Colt: Good luck and best wishes for great success in Canada!!!
good morning Tsaikos and Happy Aloha Friday !!!
Good luck to Colt in Canada 🙂
GO WARRIORS
GO WILDCATS
oops. #9: “continGent” plans.
Hawaii makes the list. Primarily because of the loss of Moniz and the LBs.

A memorable Memorial Day weekend start to everyone!
Yes! Family camp at beach house … A Stay-cation! Looking forward to sun, fun, and bar-b-que!
But first another day and a half of work 🙁
Have a great Memorial Day weekend folks!
Good morning, gang!
Good point, Gigi, re: the Coach Chow show only on cable.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Happy Friday and start of the long weekend!
Last day of school for Screecher. One more exam and then she’s free as of 10am. All day yesterday she kept saying, “I’m almost a senior!” 🙄
Any chance of Mr. Legay getting a medical hardship?
Welcome to Mr. Speller.
Saw Jarod Lofy yesterday, but didn’t get a chance to chat with him. Wonder if he could serve as a GA?
#9 gigi….good morning should be “contingency” but no worry we understood
Hope Levi’s back heals completely. Better to still be involved with the team than ending up with a lifelong injury by playing while hurt. There is life after football.
Good morning!
Nike is back.
Landry Fields of the Knicks tweets that if you’re in Seal Beach, go to Nick’s and order the breakfast burrito.
Went to Big City Diner in Kailua last night only to learn they got rid of my favorite — very teri steak. I’m seriously bummed today.
Legay is a real sharp guy. He and Richard Torres took an English class from brother Mike when they were grayshirting.
oldtimer: Yah, I realized my error when I went back to bed! Lol. ‘CONTINGENCY’ not contingent plans.
Anybody have my problem? Lately, I find myself sleeping in 2-3 hour increments, getting up to look at the computer, fix coffee, eat a snack, and then going back to bed for another 2-3 hrs. WEIRD!!!
Stopped in at Tita’s in Kahuku for a quick bite after dropping off a tent at cousin’s in Punalu’u. Tita’s is owned by Kahuku, Arizona, CFL great Junior Ah You. Had the beef stew, shrimp combo. Ono just like I remembered it. It also came with a drink. They also had a huge sheet of chocolate cake outside that was being passed out by one of his employees at no charge. Junior offered me more stew and shrimp and also asked my wife, who had the teriyaki beef-shrimp combo, if she wanted some stew. That guy is a super nice guy who will give away the house if he’s not careful. Oh yea, someone ordered a super hamburger. I couldn’t beleive how big it was, about the size as an 8″ plate. It was 3 layers too, with the 1st bun loaded with what looked like round french fries or onions, then bun, then burger then bun, not to mention all the fillings. This guy was short but kind of chunky. I asked his if he could handle after he cut it up in 4 and said “no way, not even close.” If you in the area, check it out. Right accross Kahuku High at the stop light. Oh, I’ve met Junior at a golf tournament where his stew and shrimp was one of the samplers, but don’t personally know him. Did I mention that he’s a super nice guy?
Big City Diner: there’s one in Pearlridge. Hubby and I dined there a month or so ago. Very disappointed that their meatloaf didn’t taste as good as the one we had at the Kailua branch. Maybe it was the brown gravy that wasn’t tasty.
ppj2: Guess Tita’s is for guys with super big appetites!
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
PJ2 – Yup. Ah You is one very nice guy. He was a classmate of my oldest brother at Kahuku High School way back when.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Go COLT!
Sorry to read about Legay’s injury. Mahalo for all he’s done, and good luck to him in the future.
Have to say it: Possible name for Coach’s Show on tv – “Chow Time”. And that will be my last Chow pun forever I hope.

Great name for Norm’s future restaurant: CHOW KAU-KAU
Dave Shoji was recently a guest on Cheap Eats.Dave and Guy Hagi paid a visit to Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas.Dave didn’t appear to be all that hungry to me.
http://www.k5thehometeam.com/story/18608170/cheap-eats-hiroshi
Last Call: that’s why Shoji is so skinny.
last call…actually that was the most animated that i’ve ever seen shoji.
gg…you should go see a sleep specialist. i believe straub clinic still has that sleep disorder unit.
Quality control and taste is very important in staying in the restaurant business. The food at a particular restaurant should taste the same at all of its restaurants. Old story, but Colonel Sanders of KFC fame used to shut down a particular restaurant if it wasn’t up to his standards and keep it closed until they got it right. Just like with poke. The poke at one particular supermarket location, doesn’t necessarily taste the same at another.
Whoever gets the rights to the Coach’s show, PLEASE POST ONLINE! HNN was really bad at posting the show online last year.
Btw, Anyone from Na Koa have any ideas of DVD or online postings of the “Evening with Coach Chow” telethon from a couple months ago?
It’s going to be OC Sports getting the Chow show.
Oceanic is very serious about protecting its copyrights. Last year, hubby tried to record a UH football game, but was unsuccessful.
Great. Now I can’t see the game OR the Coach show…
I hate monopolies…
st…that’s good news. i was tiring of the same old production format. from what i have seen thus far with the oc16 uh sports coverage, they have been innovative with fresh faces/ideas.
most of all, is that because they are not tied to network time constraints the fans are getting a more in depth broadcast.
too bad kekaula’s kitv contract would limit him to the game day announcing. otherwise, he’d be my first choice to produce and host the show. he with proven production innovations coupled with his close association with norm chow would make for a great pairing.
lizk…simple solution switch over to oc16. its not a monopoly, its a choice.
Al: but Liz Chun is prettier than Kekaula. Lol

got this local history email so thought I would share it:
How much Hawaiian History do you know? Age is a plus here!!!
1) The hotel’s name means the “surface of the sea”. It was built
near Chinn Ho’s family’s duck and rice pond. Ho’s company, Capital
Investment, got its start at McKinley High School in the 1920’s to
pay for a broken window.
2) This name literally means “white tree store”, and was founded in
1662 in Edo , Japan as a drapery and notions store
3) This company, owned by the Fukunaga family, was once called
Waialua Garage, a two car service station in Waialua
4) C.K. Ai founded this company105 years ago. It burned down in its
first 6 months then again 20 years later. To bring supplies to
Hawaii , they built their own ship, the fastest 5-masted schooner in
the Pacific.
5) Retail guru, Glenn Kaya brought this company to Hawaii in 1958.
You had to be a member to come into the store. They leased out space
to businesses that ran its various departments. ABC Stores,
Wong’s Drapery, C.S Wo, Mid-Pacific Lumber, Kim Chow, and Hauoli were all
tenants of this company which closed in1993.
6) Most remember this company as a fabric and dry goods store in Ala
Moana Center but 75 years ago, the store was known and loved around
the world as Hawaii ‘s best shirt maker. Chotaru Miyamoto ran
advertisements using pidgin and broken English that locals found
cute and touching.
7) Shopping on Oahu used to be in the downtown area. When Lo well
Dillingham proposed building a 100-acre City of Tomorrow retail mall
at Ala Moana, downtown businesses were reluctant to move, until this
store made a commitment. It began as a watch company in Chicago in
1886.
8) This retailer on several islands carries the name of a well-known
Hawaiian entertainer from the 1950’s who did the Hula Hop. You can
see the largest Aloha Shirt in the world at their Honolulu store.
9) Can you remember the name of the super market on School Street
and Nuuanu Avenue ? It opened in 1935 and closed in 1983.
10) Thahn Quoc Lam started this sandwich place in 1984 and now has
more than 20 franchises. The name means ” Paris ” in Vietnamese.
11) These now-gone sister restaurants at Ala Moana Center were
famous for pastrami sandwiches and Chinese take out. Calvin Chun
owned both and named them for his daughters.
12) This restaurant began as a four-table Japanese restaurant on New
York ‘s west side in 1964. They are the most successful Japanese
restaurant in the U.S. , having prepared over 100 million meals. The
recipe for success was blending exotic Japanese dishes with a
dazzling chef performance. The name means “red flower.”
13) Perhaps the oldest restaurant in Honolulu , it opened in 1882.
When tourists asked cab drivers to take them to the best Chinese
restaurant in town, they took them here, partially because the fare
was larger. A Hawaii Five-O character used the name.
14) The oldest school in Hawaii , built in 1831 as a seminary for
young men. It is the ninth oldest school in the U.S. The neighbor
island institution prides itself with being the ” Oldest School West
of the Rockies .”

10) Ba-Le
11) Patti’s Chinese Kitchen & Lyn’s Delicatessen

13) Wo Fat
14) Lahainaluna

Yes, go Colt, go!
Is he playing on CFL tv/internet now????
gg…lc has picked up a few pounds lately. motherhood will do that to a woman.
lizk…your choice, no complain.
Ipu: Colt has to try out for one of the 3 quarterback slots on the team first.
Al: I didn’t know she was a mother. She must be even more beautiful now.
I wish Kekaula would shave his face before going on the air. I prefer clean shaven men.
ipu man…oh crap. i guess i am older than i thought. i actually got 13 1/2 correct. the half being that i couldn’t decide between kuni’s dry goods and musashiya.
yup, we watch Channel 4 news daily. Love Paula Akana.
gg…the father of her child is steve uyehara.
and no worry you are not kekaula’s type.
Al: are they married?
Kekaula is too manly for me. I prefer wimps. Lol
WHAT?!?
just kidding
gg…ummm. you know these days…well you never know.
and yes, it is well documented here about your preference of wimps.
THANKS AL
eh, hubby does NOT know how to block quotes. so mr gigi is a fraud…
A WIMPY FRAUD
i see that rey speller had 2.5 k ppg on .264 hitting per. however, he doesn’t show up on any blocking stats.
oops…sorry mr. gigi, i didn’t know you were lurking.
gg…there might be more about mr. gigi that you don’t know about.
Al: maybe so.
Anyway, I have to get this show on the road. See you guys later!
He was pretty good with his serves.
In the men’s game, volleyball is all about serving and passing. Serve a receiving team out of system. Pass accurately to give setter the quick option.
Women’s volleyball is different. I defer to others on that sport.
Did I mention “Suits” is the must-watch show of the summer?
Good morning Tsaikos…!!!
#55 al, whoa, I’m still young but I got 12 1/2 out of 14. Didn’t know SERCO and I too couldn’t choose between Musashiya and Kunis. LOL, I love historical trivia stuff…and I used to go to Chun Hoon market with my Gung Gung and Po Po….
Mr. Gigi is lurking again???
Suits is one of my favorite shows. I think the USA network has some great limited series, I.e. Burn Notice, Covert Affairs, etc. Hey, I even like the NCIS and LA re-runs on USA.
Interesting, the former ousted Boise St. AD is now at San Jose St. No surprise the Rainbows went quietly in the WAC tournament. Drawing Fresno St. was a bad match up. They were not a good team away from home all season long, many were blow outs. Hallelujah, we can now turn to football exclusively.
gigi — not weird, somewhat common. Check the blog “night shift” archives and you’ll find several to keep you company. I used to be like that, but decided to retire. 🙄
But it is a common routine for Vegas and cruise ships.
Maybe your body is telling you something… 😕
Howzit goin’ WARRIORS fans,
To be ranked #81 by orlandosentinel.com and ahead by some of the big school,
that’s respect the warriors well deserved. I think our defense might got something
to do with it and of course the arrival of coach Chow & co. Warrior Pride! Bleed Green!
Imua Warriors!!
Go Warriors!!
Good morning!

I’m always curious as to how a guy at a successful program does at a start-up. Too bad we’ll never know the full talent of Phil Jackson.
35 years ago today, Star Wars was released in theaters.
Chawan and Lefty would appreciate that.
A-Joe
Cinerama Theater . . .
What was the name of the old movie theater on Kapahulu Avenue? I remember it showed Endless Summer all summer.
Wow
There was a theater on Kapahulu?? I remember the Royal theater but that was on Kuhio where Food Pantry/Perry Smorgy (former) is now.
I remember all of the original Star Wars movies being shown at Cinerama. I was 6 going on 7 when the first one came out. My aunty lived right behind Washington School so we just parked there and walked to the Cinerama to stand in line.
Wasn’t it also shown at the kaimuki theater on waianae ave?
Never mind that was five
Summer stories.
Darn auto spell. Waialae ave
Back to what I do best… Lurking. Howzit DPK. Lively conversation yesterday.
#82/84 Kapahulu Theatre was on Kapahulu Avenue. A Consolidated theatre. It was at the intersection kokohead of Side Street Cafe
I remember UH showed movies at Hemenway. Trouble was the rows weren’t layered so only the people in the front had an unobstructed view.
Thanks, Tom. I do remember that theater on Kuhio. I think the only parking was at Hula’s.
Re #90 = had to look up the street – Mooheau and Kapahulu where there is (I think) a Jamba juice and a couple of other such stores. I believe that Keo’s was there previously.
Kids today don’t realize how much of an effort it took to watch a movie.
My first apartment was in Kapahulu. I was walking around and saw a game room. In the back, there was a video poker machine. So I played and earned credits. I said aloud, it would be something if we actually got paid. And a guy said, you do get paid. And then two days later, I saw the cops hauling away the machines.
st…the owner is still looking for you, now that he got out.
st…but don’t worry. if a suspicious character asks who you are, just tell em you’re masi oka.
My chidhood best friend and I saw Star Wars on a Saturday Night at Pahala Theater. When you walk in the ticket lady would hand you about a foot of toilet paper. It was used to wipe all the soot that built up on the seats from the Sugar Mill right next door.
I still remember he and I sitting on the last row. Every so often during the movie we’d duck behind the seats, look at each other and giggle in amazement; we couldn’t believe we were finally watching Star Wars! In our home town of all places!!
Last row was the best. Had easy access to the exits, bathrooms, snack bar and perfect vantage point to watch the best “smoke rings” being made. (could still smoke in theaters those days)
Went to the Cinerama with my oldest brother to watch Return of the Jedi. Stood in line for three hours.

Star Wars. I saw it at some theatre in Virginia when I was in Yorktown ’76-77. A fellow summer instructor drove down for the summer, herded us into his station wagon one night and promised us a good movie and fast food. wafan reminds me of him sometimes. 🙂
posted this morning by Sportsbow …
UH offers Kahuku’s RB/LB, Aofaga Wily a scholarship.

We seem to get a lot of news on incoming recruits, or even potential recruits, on all UH sports, but there’s is nothing on women’s basketball. Why, this omission?
Howzit Braddah Ballpicker! Yep, fun to reminisce isn’t it?
Funny, but you never really appreciate certain times in your life until after they’re gone. That’s why I appreciate and thank the Lord for every day.
Life is good. God is good.
Star Wars – what year you said it came out? I believe we waited 3-4 weeks before going to miss all the long lines.
Sound of Music – watched it at Times Square in Dec 1965 while on x-mas leave from OCS. I had to be in uniform or get kicked out of OCS if I was reported. This gal tried to pick me up as we ran to catch the last subway to Queens. Don’t even remember name of the theater. Geez, maybe it was at Radio City Music Hall – u know with all the “can can girls”.
there was a time when MasaBoy could recite the “lines” for every person in Sound of Music – he used to watch it every day for weeks on end.
Kahuku football players – 2 of 3 have already commited to UH? Hope Wily makes it 3 of 3 – what a coup for Coach Chow!
Thank our luck stars.
I saw Star Wars at the old Waikiki cinema on Kalakaua just after graduating HS in 1977. Went back until I’d seen it seven times.
A-joe –
I remember when we went to Na’alehu in the early 70s for a 50th wedding anniversary of some relatives, our Ka’u cousins took us to Pahala Theater. What a cool old theater! We watched “The Valley of Gwangi” and didn’t sleep a wink that night after our Ka’u cousins told us all the Mo’o stories from the area as we walked home from the movie theater. More worse, my “bed” was outside on an open lanai with some cousins. A perfect spot for Mo’o to attack a sleeping Honolulu boy! 😆
Gigi –
I strongly reccomend you see your personal Doctor and request to have a sleep study done. Those studies can do wonders for helping one to get proper rest.
Good afternoon!
RE: #103
Richard Fo — I do not think there is an “omission” per se… more a lack of news “submission” by the bloggers here.
Stephen Tsai’s blog has been UH football since day 1. His work assignment is the football beat. His other Star-Advertiser work assignment is UH men’s volleyball. So while ST may know a lot of coaches and happenings in the UH lower campus, reporting on other sports it is not his assignment.
it is the bloggers here that usually brings news of other sports. Derek, for example, brings men’s basketball notes. Kevin, Pomai, Ralph and other Tsai-kos have revitalized the UH Wahine softball booster club. So if there is little news of Wahine basketball, no one is posting much.
Mr. A-House . . .
So the wahine “tried” to pick you up. She must have been impressed with you huge . . . forearms.
Uh-huh . . .
Mrs. A-House is not here. Go ahead. Finish your story.
Hoping Legay has sufficient documentation for a medical redshirt if that is what he chooses.
Would be nice if he could start 12 of 12 in 2012!
I think there is nothing worse than helicopter parents.
They have even been showing up at job interviews and on the job.
Dunno who is more pathetic. The kid or the parent.
wafan:
this is a “family” blog – no like ST give me the “hook”.
actually, I was broad at the shoulders ( 42″ ) and small at the waist ( 28″ ) and 145#s – must have been imposing to be in full dress greens running thru the streets of NY.
her line was, “hey soldier, looking for a good time”.
Mr. A-House . . .
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
HAhaha, A-House you so funny!
BigWave:
your #184 for yesterday – yes, it was Dane MacArthur – nearly every time he was tackled, he landed head first, then belly slide, and finall, both legs came up – just like a gooney bird.
but, a great receiver with hands, some speed, and shifty.
for? not!! should be ‘from’ yesterday.
there is a hoops talk and brian mcinnis also has a basketball blog.
but, more importantly our new coach has not signed anyone yet. i believe she is awaiting word from a couple of jc girls who need to complete there aa degree first. dtd had signed a few already and one has bowed out of her commitment/nli.
tyler tamua would also be a great get for us.
ahouse…you do understand that is the universal line of a profession of ill repute?
and that was not a pick line but rather a solicitation of sorts…
Richard Fo:
There is a concern because I think the signing period might have expired. After that, players only can sign scholarship agreements.
As a colleague just noted, after she took the job, it seemed like she dropped off the face of the earth.
while we are at it…she still has one more assistant slot to fill.
Maybe she adopted Gov. Ariyoshi’s theme?
If I remember correctly Beeman was waiting for the positon to close before selecting a candidate. She did say that there were some recruits that she was looking at. I was figuring that we would have heard something by now but no. Yep kinda strange. She was also house hunting. And yep the regular signing period expired last week.
also posted this morning, by Sportsbow ….
UH offers * 2014 * Kahuku DE/TE, Lamone Williams a scholarship

Used to enjoy the “double” features at Kapahulu—two movies for the price of one.
Whoo-Hoo!
I think Beeman also was waiting to see the money situation. There’s only a certain amount in the pot. I’m not sure how much her top assistant is making.
From what I’ve learned — oh, 4 minutes ago — still only two commits from Kahuku. But there are numerous offers out.
So, was I the last to know that Michelle Beadle is leaving ESPN?
# 48 Trivia Questions
I like these Trivia type questions. I also only missed # 6. I had Kuni Dry Goods.
Kapahulu Theater was next to what is now Kapahulu Zippy’s on the Mauka side.
The Parking Lot was across the street where now is located Side Street Inn.
I also saw Endless Summer at Kapahulu Theater. I think that was the first Surf Movie I saw.
They are just going from one blonde to another.
I saw “Big Wednesday” three times — including twice at the Kam Drive-In — and can’t remember a thing about the movie.
Happy Memorial Day weekend to all!
Emailed Coach Beeman and she responded in 15 minutes. Asked her about the third coaching position and any new players. Her response was:
“No need for concern regarding the 3rd coach, everything is moving along nicely. The team is working hard and we are all excited for next season.”
ST #138…I remember watching that movie and William Katt, that guy from Greatest American Hero, was going off to Vietnam and was hanging with his friends…and surfing.

There used to be 2 Movie Theaters on Kuhio Avenue.
The one closest to Fort DeRussy was at Kuhio Avenue and Kanekapolei and it was called Kuhio Theater( The Sound of Music movie played there what seemed to be like 53 straight weeks).
The Movie Theater closest to Princess Kaiulani Hotel was called Royal Theater (I remember seeing Love Story and Herbie there). After they tore down the Theater, it was replaced by a Restaurant there called Banyan Gardens. It was replaced by a Restaurant called Perry Boys Smorgy.
GEM Store – Government Employee Mercantile
Speaking of princess, I will say that the Princess Theater in downtown was one of the most beautiful theaters we had in Hawaii (the Hawaii Theater being in a tie). I think I saw Sound of Music there.
Did you all know that Hilo in the ’50s had a drive-in theater, of all things, off Kinoole St, kind of across from where the bowling alley is now? Problem was, not the rain, but there was a slight hill around it that you could climb up from the outside & sit & watch the movie, & cars in the drive-in would turn their speakers on full loud so the hill-toppers could hear. Lose money…
Sorry, I’m not impressed with Coach Beeman. And, I’m not impressed with Coach Wade either. He hasn’t gotten a single top player yet. If I’m not mistaken, Umlauft commited when Coach Wilton was still here. At least, you can see progress in the football, basketball, softball, w. volleyball, and baseball recruiting. The men’s tennis program has also been doing well. Golf, unfortunately is not very strong, but T.J. Kua is a good one.
Coach James in track and field for the women has been doing a good job in my opinion.
Gotta tell it like a see it.
Impressive. South Florida sophomnore softball pitcher, Sarah Nevin throws 71 mph. She’s also a lefty. Stephanie Ricketts topped off at 66 max. Therein is the difference in what is called “Big Time”. I watch the other teams and I am impressed with the talent level across the country. I have a feeling California will be there at the end. Surprising team to me is Louisiana-Lafeyette.
Too bad about the Pacers. I was rooting for them because I dont really like the Heat. I don’t like Wade, but he is very good. Lebron, well, he’s excellent, but he’s not one of my favorites either. I soured on him when he made “the decision”. I don’t like the Lakers either, but I have come around to like Kobe as he has matured and gotten older. For me, I’m a Western Conference guy. Thunder or Spurs? I like other of them. I like Durant, Westbrook, and Harden, also Ibaka. I like Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, also Leonard. Both are great teams. Whoever wins, I am rooting for them to beat the Heat. Phil Jackson is just lucky. He had Jordan, Pippen, and he had Kobe and Shaq/Gasol. If Spoelstra doesn’t win the championship, Riley might hire Jackson to coach Lebron!
And in those days, no need to buy mango…everyone givem to you free.
“How do you hold a moon beam in your hand”…
Re #116 A-House; AL #123 response
I don’t think A-House knew … after all he was an officer and a gentleman!
ST…ahhhh how come you can’t remember the move if you went twice…were you distracted…which reminds me when I was stationed in Tucson and went to a drive-in movie in the desert and the windows would fog up because it was chilly at night and yep me too can’t remember the movie I went to…at least you remembered the name of the movie.
Maybe Coach Beeman learned from Gib. If you can’t get a player you want don’t sign a player just to sign someone. She got a late start in recruiting. Better to save the schollies for next year when you have a whole year to recruit.
I remember seeing “How the West was Won” and “It’s a Mad,Mad, Mad,Mad World at Cinerama.
I also remember it was the Pawaa theatre before it was converted to Cinerama Theatre. Of course the Palace Theatre was closer to home, had double features and CHAPTER.
I saw the Godfather at the Kuhio theater with my date and then we went dancing in Waikiki with a few drinks and I only spent $20 bucks. Those were the days Waikiki was hopping with local entertainment but my childhood days was going to Kalihi Theater for the 10 cents matinee.
Derek you dissing Beeman before her first fall camp. Spring training involved only 9 returnees with 3 coaches. The 3rd assistant isn’t essential until Fall practice.
She was hired prior to the late signing period, most programs recruit players in their junior year, she had to familiarize herself with the returnees and make determination of what she needs. Maybe its better to be very patient at this late stage of recruiting and save a few scholies, or be very selective in the player she brings in.
DTD lost 2 JR college players after they started their Wahine career, both were late spring recruits (Evans and Ray). Mingo was also a spring recruit, late, and she rarely saw any playing time in 2 seasons. DTD other recruit asked for a release when she was not retained. There’s probably a reason why the JC and seniors are available in the spring of their senior year. Coach Beeman is wise to vet each before offering a scholarship.
Na Wahine can have 15 scholarship players, we have 9 returnees, and I don’t know who is on scholarship. Two DTD recruits are coming in. UH will have only Nomura as a senior next year, it would be wise for Beeman to save a few scholarships.
Be patient Derek. But then again, I don’t think she needs to do anything to impress you, life goes on, and she will be the Na Wahine coach come Fall.
SteveM: mahalo for the cruise line email. Especially enjoyed Papajoe’s critique of his trip thru the Panama Canal. Sounded like a lot of fun!
Correction on the theater it was the Royal Theater. I do recall seeing the Ten Commandments at the Kuhio Theater when I was young a few weeks ago.
DPK: hubby took the sleep test at Straub last month. Cost him more than $400 out of pocket. Insurance paid over $1,000.
Gotta wait before I commit to a sleep test. Pretty expensive.
A Clockwork Orange.
Lihue Theater… dodging the rodents…
Never did like Star Wars. Hate visual effects.
My fave movie of all time is SOUND OF MUSIC. I saw it over 10 times in the theater (1st time at Cinerama) and even bought the video and then the DVD.
The names of the theatres sound familiar but I really cannot remember the theatre buildings. The only one’s I kind of recall are the Cinerama (saw the Sound of Music, Star Wars 3 and 4, and some cowboy type flick), Kam and Waialae Drive-Ins, and the Japanese theatre in Makiki. Never went to a lot of movies because we could not afford to go often.
Now there are nice theatres in Kapolei, Pearl City and Pearl Ridge. Here there are 16 and 8 plexs within a few miles of each other. Still do not go to many movies. Just do not like the noise and disruptions from the rude customers’ phones, conversations, arguments, etc.
Wafan: I hear you. Haven’t been to a movie theater since watching a juvenile cartoon in 3-D a couple of years ago. 3-D is overhyped.
I remember seeing the Paper Lion and the Sound of Music at Royal Drive In in Waipahu and the Pink Panther at Kam Drive In. Two of those movies were very forgettable. It’s a wonder that I remembered the titles.
Christ almighty…
71 mph in fastpitch is a definition of “Big Time”? Pitch selection, mixing speeds, and keeping batters out of rhythm is BIG TIME and Stephanie has done that all year long and Parnaby as well.
Regardless of how one takes a post season skid compared to a body of work with all the national and conference reognition is one’s own kuleana, but one cannot ignore facts.
I said I wouldn’t talk softball anymore here, but this was just too ridiculous to pass up this very ignorant remark.
I’ll go ahead and take this one personally since I find it quite offensive and again, igorant when you belittle the athletic career of someone that has been to the WCWS, won two WAC regular season titles, one WAC tournament title, won WAC Freshman of the Year in 2009, won WAC Pitcher of the Year three years in a row with other top tier pitchers in the conference like Michelle Moses and previously Morgan Melloh and Megan Kreig, is the All-Time winningest pitcher in UH history (a history that includes Brooke Wilkins and Kelly Gentle just to name a few) and after all that, was not even slated to be an ace but worked her tail off for it and destroyed previous pitching records and not to mention all she has done for her teammates and her community work here, in San Jose, and in American Samoa.
I’ve seen this person’s performance since day one at UH Manoa and after all this, your cosmetic concept of “Big Time” compared to the facts is quite questionable and in the context you display, yes I find it offensive.
Lots of missing letters when typing non-stop without having to flinch.
Ouch and welcome back Kevin!
Ditto. Derek are you part of the Imai lineage, not only has Stephanie been an excellent role model on the softball field, she has excelled in the classroom and in the community, both of you, Steve and his many aliases, seem to enjoy dissing women athletes without fully thinking out what you state and how it impacts the character of the women you dis.
I have confidence Coach Beeman will be able to recruit some quality BB players for the Wahine. However I do wish she’d been able to hold onto DTD’s recruit Shahana Ziegler, who won Southern California all-CIF honors this year as a high school senior. Ziegler would have been a big help to the team.
i believe that an ideal pitching rotation would include three starters.
I do wonder at times why some individuals elect to put down our players and or teams even though they are great role models for younger players to follow. Could it be that it makes them feel superior when they criticize others?
However I’ve said it before, it’s best to ignore negative comments/posters.
i agree…beeman came in after the early signing period and with the late signing period upon her. the previous coach did not have much luck either since there were a couple still to sell.
give beeman two years to formulate her recruiting package.
Ok. Well, you just might get that next year.
Next season’s travel schedule should greatly improve the fatigue. Gone are the days of travelling 22,197 miles in a single softball season!
ricketts and parnaby both impressed.
physically…one can only do so much. the number of pitches tossed was incredible. ricketts was in overtime during the last week and during the playoffs. it didn’t help that parnaby was away during midseason and it appeared that someone messed with her pitching motion, a fact that even coolen alluded to recently.
it also didn’t help that we made so many errors which resulted in an increased number of pitches.
next year will be a lot more forgiving as the travel won’t be as widespread in the big west and the climates are much more suitable as well.
it was a great season. it will be with much anticipation that we await the renewed pitching staff for next year.
Sometimes… “sometimes” best to ignore. There are lines that people cross just like crossing the street when you shouldn’t and next thing you know you are on the news.
Ricketts pitched nearly 200 more pitches this season than in 2011. In 2011 we played more games.
kevin…help me out here. we got parnaby back and i assume keiki carlos will be another. i forgot who was the hs pitcher that was recruited for next year?
and i am also excited to see keiki with a bat in hand and field position when not pitching.
Al,
5’8″ Loie Kesterson a lefty supposedly can play outfield as well.
Carlos will have shots at infield as with everyone else. As you know, it’s no secret, who ever can hit will play.
#114,
Levi’s “medical retirement” translates to an open scholarship for the football team….since Levi being placed on “non-athletic” scholarship (i.e., doesn’t count against 85 maximum.)
#122,
Gov RB Tyler Taumua was a regular…..and seemingly very attentive & engaged….attendee at UH Football after Spring Ball practice sessions.
Farrington HS running back, Tyler Taumua, only a junior, was All State 1st Team,
and at 5’11″/200 lbs still could get bigger…and bigger…and…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY2g_T594vc
come, to UH, pretty please,
🙄
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY2g_T594vc
Kevin and whomever – I’m probably premature in asking this, but would Coolen use both lefties (Kaia & Kesterson) as the starters?
gigi – 3D technology has matured over the years. If you want to see proof, watch “Avatar” in 3D. IMHO, it’s the standard for 3D movies. Certain types of films lend themselves well to 3D, such as action movies and movies with large landscapes as backgrounds. (Aren’t they releasing Star Wars in 3D?)
Like DaveLetterMan I emailed Beeman and she was quick to respond. The only other coach i can remember who did this was Mack. But I haven’t tried the new coach.
Tyler Taumua was a work horse for the Governors and still gave it his all even tho he was injured and in pain.
I will take Stephanie Ricketts any day. I am just happy that we have athletes of that quality wanting to play for us.
Good job Kevin you said it well in disputing “big time” comment. Yes it is an offensive negative comment in regards to Ricketts body of work and contributions. Mahalo.
I never was an athlete. Stopped jogging in 1982 when I experienced severe chest pain every time I jogged. Switched to swimming in the pool.
Nowdays, I do very little.
Anyway, what I want to say is, I give all student athletes a lot of credit for giving it their all in their sport. Some even play 2 sports (football and basketball, for example).
I wouldn’t worry about the Softball Bows. Coach Coolen knows what the team needs and the good thing is he keeps reloading not rebuilding. As for the basketball Wahines, it will take time to rebuild this team. Unfortunate the new hire was already into the recruiting season so tough for her but I think she is akamai to not rush out just to fill positions.
JM, a lot of people enjoyed Avatar in 3-D. Hubby even wants to buy a 70 inch 3-D TV at Costco. I told him he is crazy.
Liilii was also a really good pitcher in high school. She was also an OIA East All-Star first team bballer.
Hey, hey, hey… Come on now. Derek is more than entitled to express his opinions.
We’re more than entitled to give a flying rats ass what he says.
Breaking news? Ron Mizutani is leaving channel 2 news. The 5pm news today was
his last. GBU Mr. Mizutani.
Mizutani leaving again. Good luck to him where ever he lands.
trying to visualize a flying rats ass…
#183,
Taumua already weighed in a 222 lbs back in February at the NIKE SPARQ Combine….

Haleakala — you went to the drive-in to actually watch the movies? 😕
Hmmm, you don’t seem the type… 😆
Steve:
I was pretty young then. I learned to drive a little later and then learned what other guys did at the drive ins. It’s too bad that drive ins are passé.
Gigi — you’re welcome. Papajoe2 is certainly worth watching … 😆 …errr, you may not know that he is the designated Tsai-ko Shore Excursion leader for private Caribbean cays too. 😳
His cruise was the 2nd half of an unusual back-to-back Panama Canal cruise offering. San Diego to Ft. Lauderdale AND back to San Diego. Was offered as a 30-nt cruise calling on 17 different ports and going both ways through the Panama Canal. Price? Was under $3,000 per person when I saw it last-minute. Just fly round trip San Diego from Hawaii.
Imagine how many gigi-hawaii blogs that trip could fill up… 🙂
steve: but no internet available on ship, right? how would i post pics?
RE: #199
gigi — see the January 2012 issue.
steve: yes, I saw that issue before. Internet on ship is very slow and can be expensive. Most passengers do email at internet cafes on shore. Too bad for me.
Ah well, I’ll just wait til I get back home to post on my blog.
steve: since I have to babysit, the earliest I can cruise is June 2013.
Please stop calling him steve, he’s SteveM. Causes bad thoughts.
hey, life is good and I am happy.
Would? If they’re ready to go yeah no matter.
He did always comment how it was nice to have one righty and one lefty.
When Parnaby was a freshman, she was used a lot more against those speedy bunting teams with a load of lefty slappers and Coolen liked that match-up of using Kaia against those kinds of teams. Of course as Ricketts asserted herself more and more leading into this past season, he was more confident in using Ricketts no matter the opponent or match up, but the option was still there.
You know I haven’t heard that saying in ages “a flying rats ass”. Only old folks remember that slang. We used to say “I don’t give a rats ass….blah, blah, blah etc.” It’s the same as saying “I don’t give a s**t.” Have to keep the blog clean.
I hope that brings some kind of clarity and now back to the world of sports.
Oh I also agree no call SteveM…steve….you know dakine negativity lidat.
Just throwin it out, they don’t keep stats for this but – Stephanie appeared in 37 games this year and a rough figure of pitches thrown is 116 a game that comes to 4292 pitches thrown and some one wonders why she wasn’t throwing like she was in the beginning of the season.
Let me make myself perfectly clear. I have never, never said anything negative about Stephanie Ricketts. I was merely pointing out her fastball comparing to the other lady. The reference of “Big Time” in my mind was in reference to the physical tools for throwing a ball, as in Stephen Strasburg throwing 100 mph as big-time. If I offended some people, sorry. I guess the loss of 4 straight games to end the season leaves a sour taste in our mouths, including me. It was tough to watch giving up 32 runs in 4 games and the defense making too many errors. That’s not the Wahine I saw the entire regular season. I don’t know what happened and I’m sure Coolen is analyzing what happened too. Hope for better next season. South Florida lost to Hofstra 2-1 so yes, having a very fastball doesn’t mean a win. Kudos to Hofstra for playing a very good game in 11 innings.
Compliments for this post, I am glad I noticed this website on yahoo.

gigi, I bought the internet on the cruise for $3.95 registration and $100 for 200 minutes and 50 minutes free (=250). While I was reluctant to buy it, I needed it for some business that would be closing at the time that I was on the ship. I was surprized that the speed of the internet improved a lot, but not as fast a roadrunner. I tried to keep the selection of what I read and wrote to a minimum, so by choice, sports was eliminated. I failed to catch up fully since it was an 19 day vacation (16 day cruise, plus 2 day flight and stay over in Ft. Lauderdale and 1 night in San Diego.) I didn’t know until yesterday that Shaq Stokes was leaving the basketball team and the Softbows lost 2 WAC playoff games in a row.
oldtimer808 and el burro sabio — thanks for the consideration!
thanks kevin…i finally found that recruit article. looks like we are getting the coolen prototypical student/athlete this fall. hopefully the frosh pitchers can jump right in and make an immediate impact. with carlos and kesterson both already throwing in the mid 60’s they have the tools to compete right away as long as they develpe the off speed and location.
seems like we reload with some girls with pop. should be fun.
um, sooner or later they will need to start charging a gate fee and use it towards summer school.
PAPAJOE – nice article on your trip in STEVEM’s cruise blog!
I like the coffees from Niguragua (Antigua) and from Costa Rica but coffee from Panama is pretty good too!
Al,
That will be the day when a program actually directly benefits from monies they make from true admission….
btw…welcome back kevin.
Good morning Tsai-kettes and Tsai-kos.
Gonna be a beautiful day!!!
Have not seen “Iron Horse” in ages. Found it this morning on Antenna TV. Interesting how the photo they just showed was not a Daguerro-type of the period. HA!
Morning folks!
No idea why I woke up so early on a SATURDAY! But oh well, thats what happens when you go sleep early.
I remember buying a case of Durans (sp?) when I was in Panama. That stuff was strong! After one cup, I would be running to the bathroom for my daily bowel movement (TMI?). It was a natural laxative for me and kept me bouncing of the walls for the rest of the day.
Also, remember buying a box of Monte Christos and Cohibas for a hundred bucks each. I know, its illegal to buy Cuban-made products, but we always sneaked it into the US by storing it in the classified info containers where Customs couldn’t check. 😉
Today is the big day in McMinnville for m/m d1 #2, 5pm local.
Congratulations #2!!!
Good morning to all have a great weekend. Mahalo for your clarification Derek. Writing in a blog is difficult at best when trying to get a view point across without it being misinterpreted so I understand perfectly where you are coming from. I’m excited for next year for the Softball ladies. Coolen is reloading and we have some exciting players coming in that may have an impact. Majam will be healthier and Iwata stronger for their Senior season. I expect Wartner and Kleibenstein to have a good year with Liili possibly taking over 1st base.
GOOD MORNING TSAIKOS!
Graduation day for Kamehameha School Maui!
Congratulations!
Good morning, gang!
Congratulations to d1shima’s #2!
Congrats to all of the HS graduates going out into the world this month!
How long did the Longest Day play in the theaters? I remeber seeing it but can’t remember where it was. Cinerama?
remember.
tommui, all the countries that we went to said they have the world’s best coffee. Costa Rica guide explained that most other coffees add a percentage of other things or coffee from other places, but theirs are true 100% coffee from there.
Interested to know the state of potential transfer Falyn Fonoimoana to Hawaii
But wanna input that you have a very decent site, I enjoy the style it really stands out.
Papajoe2 #239 – As I understand it, the most expensive coffees (and probably the best) are Kona and Jamaica Blue Mountain (about $40-45 a pound though Jamaica is only about $15-20 in Jamaica).
When we went on a cruise, we loaded up on Jamaican and Costa Rican coffees. When we went through the Canal, we stayed on board for the transversing though a lot of passengers got off and rejoined the ship on the Pacific side – they loaded up on coffee too!
