Bear market

Two Baldwin Bears will be joining the Warriors.

Quarterback Keelan Ewaliko, the two-time MIL Offensive Player of the Year, has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors. Ewaliko will be part of the 2013 recruiting class.

Ewaliko, who is 5-11 and 175 pounds, led the MIL in rushing and passing yards in 2011.

Last week, he won the 200-meter dash in 22.49 seconds at the state track meet. He also was a member of the Bears’ state-champion 400-meter relay team.

What’s more, Ewaliko has won two championship belts in bull riding.

Here’s his story: Ewaliko video.

Also, after a telephone interview with UH coaches yesterday, defensive end Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson will be joining the Warriors. Last week, Pu‘u-Robinson received a release from his Washington State scholarship. He will have two years to play one season, although he will petition the NCAA for an exemption to play in 2012 without redshirting. Pu‘u-Robinson’s appeal is based on special family circumstances that necessitated his move back to Hawaii.

ewaliko is quite an athlete…he could find himself as a safety. he reminds me of a one time qb turned nfl safety as in blaine gaison.

  3. al May 15, 2012 12:35 am

here’s hoping that pu’u-robinson gets immediate eligibility. we need help at de. perhaps he could be the key that allows tavita woodard to play te where he could become a future nfl’er.

  4. al May 15, 2012 12:35 am

…and no forget those two possible transfers.

  5. cabeza3 May 15, 2012 12:56 am

he’s fast–but not sure if he ran a world record 400 meter dash by a wide margin at the state meet. must be 200 meter!

    ST,

Didn’t Jordan Pu’u Robinson already redshirt in 2009? And if the

No-Clue-At-All gang turns down his petition, woudn’t he have to sit it out a year?

  14. Slugger May 15, 2012 3:49 am

Happy birthday, Aya! Happy belated birthday to the birthday babies so far this month!

    Good morning, gangees!

    Good News Bears…

  15. WarriorNY May 15, 2012 4:15 am

If Pu’u stayed at WSU and graduated, would he have had two years to play two years? Couldn’t he have played at WSU this year and grad transfer for a year back to UH? I hope NCAA notices that and realizes that the family reason was the driving force behind his transfer…

  16. polywarrior4life May 15, 2012 4:36 am

    Good morning mates!

Great news for Ewaliko, make sure you get that guaranteed offer in writing, or have another option. So far a mile stone of 45-50 scholly’s have been offered and I don’t think the home team has that much scholly’s to give away in one year.

Imo, for Pu’u its always good to see our island boys return home. Though I don’t think the NCAA will approve his petition to play in 2012 unless proven that the return is necessary due to family reasons. It would be hard though if his family is on Maui and he is here on Oahu, kinda almost the same thing, though the flight is shorter. Still it will be challenging to get a petition approval, not after Kapua Sai is doing the same thing. Though, he graduated and he was the first guy to file his petition with the NCAA.

We shall see, wish the best of luck to both neighbor island Bears and good luck!

  17. Wes'side Warrior May 15, 2012 4:43 am

    Morning, everyone!

I swear, these end-of-school-year projects are killing me! What ever happened to taking it easy, “this-is-the-last-week-and-a-half-of-school” approach?

Hmmm… I seemed to have developed an affinity for dashes lately (to go along with my dot-dot-dot’s).

Anyways, good to hear that more and more youngsters are choosing us BEFORE da Mainlanders. Would like to see us as a legit first choice, as opposed to da “well, if no work out, can always come back home” choice. I know there will always be different reasons for getting off of da rock, but, just saying…

And with that, welcome to all future Warriors. Glad that you decided to join our ‘ohana!

    Happy birthday, Aya!

Happy birthday to all of our May birthday peeps!

    And of course…

    Go, Wahine!!!

    Go, ‘Bows!!!

  18. Naks8 May 15, 2012 5:09 am

  21. whitey May 15, 2012 5:27 am

    Happy Birthday Aya.

  22. Derek May 15, 2012 5:34 am

And don’t forget the third Baldwin alum coming, Kicker, C.J. Santos. Ewaliko is a good one. He’s a true athlete who can play multiple positions. Interestng to see where he ends up. At 5’11” there is lots to time to grow bigger and stronger. Welcome to the program!

I tell you what, Chow and Co. are making inroads early. I’m excited.

  23. duffer May 15, 2012 6:03 am

  25. Shoko May 15, 2012 6:14 am

    Morning folks!

If a kid can run the 200-meter dash in 22.49, I wonder how that time translates in the forty. Was watching the Baldwin – Kam Maui game and was hoping to gauge how fast he is, but it was hard discern how quick he runs.

  26. polywarrior4life May 15, 2012 6:14 am

    Happy Birthday Aya!

  27. al May 15, 2012 6:15 am

    he clocked a 4.59 last year,g

  28. polywarrior4life May 15, 2012 6:17 am

    Mean the concussion!

Roadways are getting smaller with over crowded vehicles. Car pool peeps! Catch a bus! Hitch hike? lol

  29. Shoko May 15, 2012 6:22 am

4.59 is pretty quick. Considering record holders in the 200-meter event typically run in the nineteens (mens) and twenty-ones (women), for a kid his age thats impressive.

  30. jm2375 May 15, 2012 6:28 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Welcome to the Warrior ohana, Mr. Robinson and Mr. Ewaliko!

Wes’side – I know the feeling. Think the schools are more project-oriented these days. At least I don’t have to help too much. After turning in the term paper worth 30% of the semester grade, Screecher’s English teacher assigned another small paper due Monday. Classes are pau Tuesday, then finals Wed-Fri.

  31. whitey May 15, 2012 6:31 am

everyday in an interesting day for da warriors. in 2 1/2 months or thereabouts, we get to see the Coach Chow version of da warriors in game time practice. going be fun.

  33. BigHiloFan2 May 15, 2012 6:32 am

    quick is getting away.

an da Baldwin bugga has been getting away alot.

    Go Warriors.

  34. WarriorNY May 15, 2012 6:50 am

I wonder what position Ewiliko will play. He doesn’t seem to fit on Offense as we seem to have quite a few tailbacks and slotbacks. I assume Coach Chow doesnt want him as a run-first qb. I guess that leaves him for safety and corner on D. Hope he can turn into a Mana Silva type QB.

As to the “rebounders” from mainland. I respect the kids for going out and experiencing mainland schools. You can’t fault them for going out there but it’s always nice to get a couple to come back home.

I’m really curious who the BCS transfers ST was talking about yesterday. Seems like they must be pretty talented players in positions were weak at for coach to hold schollies for them. ST said one would be avail to play next year. I wonder if it would be a grad transfer pro style QB?

  35. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2012 7:03 am

He can play a lot of positions. He said he grew up on a ranch. He’s used to hard work and dealing with large mammals.

  36. BG May 15, 2012 7:05 am

    A special morning everyone!

And special birthday wishes to AYA!

  37. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2012 7:05 am

40 times justify jobs for NFL scouts.

But you don’t play football in shorts, nor do you run in a straight line very often.

  38. BG May 15, 2012 7:08 am

4.59 would not be below average if hand-timed. Fairly average for a back if electronic time.

  39. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2012 7:16 am

    I think it’s all relative.

If everyone is using the same timing technique, then you can comparatively gauge speed. Most people usually are a tad slower than they claim. If 4.59 is a legit time, that’s pretty fast.

  40. letsgowarriors May 15, 2012 7:17 am

r these 2 bcs xfers different from sai and puu-robinson?

  41. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2012 7:18 am

I’ve stood among 40 NFL scouts, and it’s rare if three of them can get the exact reading on a 40-yard dash. Even the NBA uses tenths of a second not hundreths.

  42. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2012 7:22 am

In answer to everybody’s questions, two players (with no apparent Hawaii ties) contacted UH. Follow-ups are in the works. If they were to choose UH and gain admittance, there would be scholarships available. At least that is my understanding.

  43. letsgowarriors May 15, 2012 7:24 am

    thanks

  44. Na Koa Mike May 15, 2012 7:29 am

Kauai fans, here’s your chance to meet Coach Chow.

    http://www.nakoa.org/2012/05/kauai-meet-the-coach-event-is-on-june-8th/

  45. Shoko May 15, 2012 7:30 am

I would think he would be a good tailback. If he can run and pass that would make him a highly-valued player. Probably needs to bulk up a bit, but he has time to develop physically before he joins the Warriors.

Speaking of a player claiming to be faster than he really is, they also fudge on their height too. He may be 5’11”, but in actuallity he might an inch to an inch and a half shorter.

  46. tommui May 15, 2012 7:33 am

  59. 808Bowler May 15, 2012 9:15 am

    Abunai,

    808Bowler,

    Yes he is he’s confident.

  62. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2012 9:48 am

  63. SAWARRIOR May 15, 2012 9:55 am

Hmmm… Aya is a looker. I thought blog readers were all nerdy, chubby and over 40.

  64. Hoohiki May 15, 2012 10:02 am

Here on Maui, the Baldwin Bears are always the team to beat. Now the whole state is starting to realize that they have pretty good athletes, be it in soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, track and field, etc. The mind set here is if you’re a talented athlete and want to go further, make sure you reside in Baldwin’s district or ask for a district exemption to transfer or in Robinson’s case, transfer your senior year. If I’m not mistaken, he played for Kamemehameha Schools- Maui and transferred so he can get a better shot at a good Division1 football program. I’m glad Coach Chow sees our talented student athletes because we’ve had many that got away because they were never looked at nor offered. I’m glad the climate is different now and our athletes who want to play for the Warriors are able to do so.

I also want to recognize the academic side of Baldwin. Honolulu magazine just listed and rated all public schools from elementary to high school based on their SAT scores. Baldwin is ranked in top the tier of all public high schools beating out the likes of Pearl City, Mckinley, and Roosevelt High. The top high school is Moanalua, followed by Campbell, Mililani, Kaiser, Kalani, Waiakea, and Leilehua. The caveat is Moanalua has a grade of C while the top public school in the state with a grade of A+ is Momilani Elementary school.

  65. kruzen May 15, 2012 10:28 am

Baldwin does well in many sports but other high schools on Maui are the team to beat in some sports such as girls basketball and wrestling.

  66. SteveM May 15, 2012 10:39 am

    Good morning again, everyone!

  67. whitey May 15, 2012 11:09 am

I believe Coach Chow met most of the Maui recruits when da warriors were on Maui. I trust his judgement cause I have no clue as to how you judge any recruit. Any kid who can ride bulls and can run away from a bull after riding him has to be fast. If you think one bull no can run, try have him chase you for 25 yds and you find out how fast the bugga go.

  68. whitey May 15, 2012 11:20 am

some time back, i watched Merlin Olsen and his partner (not sure, but think was Peter B) in the steer mugging contest at the Makawao Rodeo. You want to learn and see how to tackle, this was more than textbook learning. His partner roped the steer (about 500-600 lbs) and Merlin ran about 25 yds, grabbed the steer by the waist and put it down on the ground in record time. I don’t know if the record still stands, but you learn things from cross training I guess. Poor steer. That’s why Merlin Olsen is a Hall of Famer. Be good to see if da warriors can run and tackle like him.

  69. 808Bowler May 15, 2012 11:40 am

He was working with me the other week. Unless he went recently. He hasn’t been with me recently and I haven’t seen him at the shop since.

  70. RedZone May 15, 2012 11:42 am

The kid is a winner. Watching him lead Baldwin in their win against Farrington made a believer out of me.

  71. whitey May 15, 2012 12:46 pm

when Coach JJ was at UH, he offered a scholie to another Maui speedster, but da player declined and signed to play pro baseball. Today that player plays cf for the Phillies.

  72. whitey May 15, 2012 12:58 pm

I am not sure how to interpet the maui news article on Ewaliko, but it looks like he will be a greyshirt, but will have a scholie when he enrolls full time. Coach Chow wants him to grow physically and sees a lot in this kid’s future as a warrior. Imagine Ewaliko growing to 6′ and weighing 210 lbs and with his speed could play either side of the ball.

  73. whitey May 15, 2012 1:00 pm

when Coach Trapasso was relatively new at UH, he offered a walk on to another Maui ball player, but the player declined and went to Fullerton. He now starts for the Athletics as catcher.

  74. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2012 1:11 pm

Yep. Graves is on Kauai. He said he loves that island.

  75. Stephen Tsai May 15, 2012 1:16 pm

I worked with Rob Collias for a couple of years, and I trust his judgment. When we were on Maui, Collias insisted Ewaliko was a big-time player.

I know there’s an option to grayshirt, but at the moment, he’s part of the 2013 class. Chow is pretty selective and he doesn’t believe in redshirting. So whenever Ewaliko enrolls, he’s going to have to be ready to compete right away.

  76. whitey May 15, 2012 1:33 pm

Rob C is a good guy. Met him when he first started with the Maui News and was assigned to Sports under Wayne Tanaka.

  77. reduceri May 15, 2012 1:36 pm

I just like the valuable information you provide to your articles. I’ll bookmark your weblog and check once more here frequently. I am reasonably certain I will be informed many new stuff proper right here! Good luck for the following!

  78. 808Bowler May 15, 2012 1:59 pm

Ahh he only worked for us that short time. But was cool meeting and talking to him. Good kid.

  79. A-joe May 15, 2012 2:33 pm

Baldwin has always been a powerhouse in all sports. In 1948-49 Baldwin took every sport therein the MIL. If there was a state tourney held back then, the 1974 Baldwin team should’ve been state champs.

One key factor in the increase of neighbor island football talent can be directly attributed to the current state tournament in place. Neighbor island kids have now gotten the exposure to demonstrate their talents against statewide competition.

All too often once Oahu has been exhausted, UH has looked to the mainland for prospects. Nice to see UH cutting their travel time and expense down to neighbor island distances in search of talent.

  80. whitey May 15, 2012 2:38 pm

A-joe, how you?? Remember when Hilo joined the MIL in football because they couldn’t get enough competition on the Big Island. My sis was still in school at Baldwin and her good friend from Hilo was the qb’s sis. So after the game, they bring one bunch of the players to our house and my mom fed them. Talk about players in the MIL then.

  81. oldtimer808 May 15, 2012 4:08 pm

Does anyone know who the two possible transfers ST is referring to?

  82. HawaiiMongoose May 15, 2012 4:08 pm

    http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/7935087/big-west-reconsiders-boise-state-all-non-football-sports

It looks like UH and Boise State are going to remain conference mates in non-football sports.

  83. wafan May 15, 2012 4:33 pm

    Good evening!

  84. wafan May 15, 2012 4:34 pm

    Welcome to the Mau’i Warriors!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  85. wafan May 15, 2012 4:34 pm

Going to be short of 100 again?

  86. tommui May 15, 2012 4:42 pm

Gave Al the 100th but ST knocked out the spams and now we are back to 87.

  87. tommui May 15, 2012 4:48 pm

And if ST gets around to it, #77 and #84 may get bounced and then we get bounced back to #86!

But better than letting the spam stay on.

  88. d1shima May 15, 2012 5:22 pm

What benefit is there to posting the names of possible transfers while the process is in its nascent stages?

  89. d1shima May 15, 2012 5:23 pm

    Does anybody know their names?

    Yes.

The players. Their parents. The Coaches.

  99. oldtimer808 May 15, 2012 10:05 pm

I didn’t read the blog yesterday so no problem about the two possible transfers since all is conjecture right now. Exciting times though with the aggressive approach to recruiting and I think the creative juices are flowing again for Coach Chow now that this is his show.

  100. al May 15, 2012 10:30 pm

Boise is good in what other sport?

    hmmm….

Big West to assess Boise StateUpdated: May 15, 2012, 8:03 PM ETBy Andy Katz

The Big West may have indirectly helped keep Big East football together for the short term by reversing its December decision to consider Boise State for membership in all other sports.

Big West commissioner Dennis Farrell told ESPN.com Tuesday afternoon that the conference’s board of directors, including 2013 member San Diego State, have offered the Broncos an assessment tool that they hand out to any potential new members.

“We asked if they have interest in submitting it to us (then) they can fill it and get it back to us and we’ll take it to our board of directors,” said Farrell of Monday’s board of directors and chancellors meeting. “The ball is in Boise State’s court at this point.”

Farrell said he expects a decision from Boise State by July 1.

The Broncos have to find a new home for the rest of its sports programs after the WAC was nearly gutted after defections to the Mountain West conference, Sun Belt and Conference USA left the WAC with only four remaining members for 2013 — Denver, Seattle, New Mexico State and Idaho.

Boise State has had dialogue with the MWC about staying in the league instead of leaving next year. The MWC would like to have Boise State and San Diego State remain for a 12-team league, according to multiple sources, instead of sending the respective football programs to the Big East.

San Diego State accepted an invitation to put the rest of its sports, including its nationally-ranked men’s basketball program, in the Big West in December. But Boise State, which is out of the Big West footprint that includes only California and Hawaii, wasn’t invited.

The Big East desperately needs Boise State and San Diego State to stay in football for 2013 to help its national profile. The conference also needs two schools to fill the basic need of scheduling for the remaining football members (Louisville, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Rutgers and South Florida) to go along with 2013 all-sport members Memphis, Temple, SMU, Houston and Central Florida. Navy joins the Big East in football in 2015.

College football is moving away from an automatic qualification status for the BCS in two years. The new members would be able to compete for the Big East AQ in 2013. But losing Boise State and SDSU would hurt the Big East’s attempt to negotiate a higher rights fee when its television contract is up in two years.

All of these moves are fluid, considering Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich has told the Big East the Cardinals would rather be in the Big 12 if offered and UConn wants to be in the ACC, according to multiple sources. But as of now, neither conference has extended nor has plans to deliver an invitation to either party, respectively.

That’s why the Big West’s decision to take a chance on Boise State and increasing costs is a bold move. The Big West, which will lose Pacific to the WCC next year, is now an all-bus league, save the one trip every season for each school to Hawaii (which is joining the MWC in just football, but arriving in the Big West in all sports this fall from the WAC).

Farrell said he spoke with Boise State president Bob Kustra on Tuesday and he was receptive to the possibility of the Big West.

“I think he was encouraged that there was an openness to this,” said Farrell. “He was pleased we didn’t slam the door in his face.”

Farrell said this is still a long way to go, but now it’s in play. The cost issue is something all Big West members would have to address but were willing to do so going forward.

“We’re looking at this from a broad landscape right now,” said Farrell.

Farrell said the Big West was willing to stay at 11 when it added SDSU but that was because the Aztecs were within the state. When Pacific left for the WCC, the league was content to be at 10 members. Farrell said if Boise State were added the league would probably go to 12.

Denver, Seattle and Cal-State Bakersfield would be interested, although sources said Seattle and Denver as private schools would rather be in the WCC but may not have a choice right now. NMSU and Idaho would have issues with what to do with their football programs.

Farrell said there were conversations with Boise State in December when SDSU was being added.

“But the timing wasn’t right for us to go beyond our footprint,” said Farrell. “They had other options at that point in the WAC.”

Now, with the WAC falling apart, the timing is right for Boise and the Big West. And if it happens, it might save Big East football for the short term.

    and helping Hawaii too. jmo
