Estes on Lombardi Award watch list
UH center John Estes has been named to the 2009 Lombardi Award “Preliminary Watch List.”
According to the news release, the award is “limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or the right of the ballo, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.”

That was an excellent story you had in the Advertiser today! The numbers by themselves were amazing, but getting the perspective from the fans really provided insight into the challenges that JD and the rest of the Athletic Department has.
The headline made it seem like attendance was down because of the economy, but the feedback from the fans really didn’t mention that as one of the big reasons why the fans aren’t showing up. Great job in interviewing the only fan in the Manoa Manics section…can’t believe there was just one student sitting there for a game!

If Under Armour supported UH like they supported Maryland, UH’s budget situation would be in much better shape. However, Maryland’s compliance people should have known that the UA tour could be an NCAA violation and let Under Armour know that they shouldn’t be doing that.
I guess Under Armour is not trying to help Nash recruit for UH…
UA is giving Maryland $3.5 mil per year…that is more than UH’s Athletic Department deficit.
UA is trying to get this high school basketball player to choose them over Nike, but the player’s father has the same opinion of their shoes as some of the posters here.
If Oregon can’t have recruits visit Nike on an official recruiting visit, then I think that Maryland should have kept the recruit away from Under Armour during his official recruiting visit.

Liz – great find. I gotta agree that Snyder definitely doesn’t know what he’s doing and neither do the other Washington/Baltimore teams. I think the last time the Bullets/Wizzards won a championship was back in the 70s. The Orioles and the Nationals will be out of the running by mid-May. The Orioles haven’t won a World Series since the early 80s. Jack Kent Cooke is rolling over in his grave with what Snyder has done to his team.
The UH BBall team’s contract is with Adidas so I don’t think UA would look to help Nash recruit.

Good Morning….wanted to start getting the word out.
PIAA has negotiated for almost 2 years to get one of the top Kicking/Punting/Long Snapper camps in the nation out here and its happening May 23-24th. We need to get a minimum of 50 kids (grade 5 thru 12) to attend – they are coming in at cost so we need to cover at least that.
I told a few of the UH coaches about it (while looking for a field, wishing for the new field – aint gonna happen) and they were thrilled. One said “its about time” another said “finally”. This is an area sorely lacking in Hawaii” We have the talent but the skill level has been relatively low, with the exception of Jake Ingram on the LS side. So hopefully this will bring some kickers/punters from Hawaii into the Warrior Ohana.

I agree with you about how UA would support Maryland more than any other school…but there is a huge disparity in their support for Maryland and their support for UH. I just wish that gap was a little less–could they be approached to give more (money or products for other teams) given the financial state the Athletic Department is in now? I’m guessing that they are being squeezed by the economy too so they probably would just stick to what is in the contract.

2 – Month of May is just around the corner, do you have a field in mind now and can wait for something more permanent later?
3 – There’s a football field that the Navy gave access to the community of Kalaeloa to use for developing youth football. No security gate to gain access from off of Ft. Buckner Rd. Perfect for nurturing a program that is already building momentum on the Leeward coast.
4 – If Sailor Blue is lurking today, I know he might could help us cut thru any Navy red tape at a pay grade level much higher than the rest of us Peons.

Well UA doesn’t have basketball shoes yet. Hard to get a basketball player to pick you when you don’t have the proper equipment for their sport yet.

Nice publicity for Estes. But, based on last year’s performance I don’t think he has a chance. I didn’t think he had a good year last year and I noticed he lost some control by makes some stupid personal fouls. He has to really take it “up a notch” if he’ll get more national laurels. If he does, then “bam.”
Talking about UH basketball, they need to get new uniforms for next year.
Number one, those current jerseys are losers. Two, the jerseys are a little baggy and look too big. Just watch the game and see for yourself.
The new uniforms should have a lot of tapa designs around the shoulders and neck and along the shorts. I’m sure adidas or UA can do a better job. We need a new look along w/ some better talent. We should pick up 5 new players, and release 3 current players who are not going to contribute to the team much in the next couple of years. And we should find these players a college where they can help another team.
Unfortunately, that’s the hard part a coaching has to make w/ these personnel decisions. It also tells me that the coaching staff made some mistakes in their talent evaluations in recruiting these players in the first place. Too bad. But, I hope next year’s crop of recruits can shoot 3s and get a point guard who can handle the ball and score. When was the last time they got a 6’10’ or taller player who was decent? Maybe Shimonovich! He was o.k.

I know that you know MUCH more about UA than me…but are you sure that they don’t have basketball shoes yet? It sounds like UA has been paying a player to wear their basketball shoes–the guy who went to Europe to play basketball instead of going to college.
The high school player in the article apparently wore their basketball shoes in a recent high school game.
Watch lists mean that the University nominated someone…but Estes is a senior and will be a 4-year starter, including very good seasons even when he was a freshman and sophomore.
If Estes wasn’t on the watch list as a senior, then that would have meant someone messed up in the UH athletics department. They did their job and now hopefully Estes can lead the OL to a big improvement this year and earn a finalist post.

September 18 Programming Note: It is certain there will be a Tsai-ko gathering on Friday, Sept. 18 from around 6:00 PM. las vegas is still working on where, depending on estimated count. We’ll gather the numbers later since Rich2176’s ticket numbers are more critical at this moment.
The Friday night gathering is to allow Tsai-kos from Hawaii and the mainland (international too) an opportunity to meet. Part of the program will be small group introductions.
It is apparent that not all Tsai-kos would tailgate together on Saturday. We have UH Alumni Association tailgate, SportsHawaii tailgate, Boyd tailgate, our tailgate, hotel and travel agency tailgates, etc.. SO, the Friday night gathering is planned for everyone who makes it to Vegas in time….
Is Pilares at slotback really a change of position? I thought that was the plan for him. I’m sure that he’ll do well there, and he’ll be ready to move back to RB if there are injuries or the new players struggle.
I hope that Heun does a good job at his new position. ST was hinting at this move for awhile, but those positions are pretty loaded on the D so he’s really going to have to do well to get significant playing time. Depth and competition are good, though.

We’ll be driving from San Diego on that Friday, leaving after my kids finish school. My girls go to sleep around 7:30pm, so we might have to go straight to the hotel and put them to bed. If so, I’ll try to attend after the kids are asleep.
By the way, we just got our reservation to be at Circus Circus from 9/18 – 9/20. Downtown would have been nice (but expensive), but Circus Circus is my girls #1 choice…and our room is free (just have to pay $10 or so room tax).
What happened to that kid from Kamehameha who played MLB? Kid was pretty good. UH should have gone after him. Same build and skill sets as Manti but not same instincts and athleticism. Would have been an excellent pick up for UH. Same with the MLB from Waianae a few years ago.

All I know is that they are planning to release their first line of basketball shoes sometime before the summer of this year. Unless UA has some prototypes for these kids to try out I dunno what they can compare it to in terms of a true basketball shoe.
The only shoes on the market they have are a bunch of trainers for specific purposes (linear running, side to side training, vertical, etc…) only in January of this year did they release their first TRUE running shoes.
In the article you quoted with the player or dad saying “their sneakers suck” I can only think of one shoe UA already has on the market that resembles a basketball shoe (high cut) and that is the UA Power Trainers and I can testify that these things are not good on the feet for heavy running like in basketball. They have a lot of cushioning on the sole but the support on the sides of your feet are brutal and painful. The shoes are labeled as “vertical trainers” for up and down movement so I don’t know what the hell exactly they are good for. I use them at the gym on days I don’t run as they’re good to stand and lift weights in! 😆
Anyway, I like UA products in general and I have given their shoes a chance as I have three different pairs with their running shoes being my favorite of the bunch.
But as anyone knows, they have a LONG way to go if they want to compete with Nike in the shoe department.
Recruiting is moving earlier and earlier in the southwest. Texas even had sophomores at their Junior Day yesterday.
I hope that the UH coaches don’t do what the Tennessee coaches did when UH has their Junior Day.

I agree, good shoes, but wrong feet. Until UA can address the problem of the Triple EEE and more feet here, there shoes present a challenge for those that wear them.
If you feet are hanging over the outer edge of the sole of your shoe, that is not how the shoe is designed. The weight load factor beyond the outer edge of the fram of the soul creates and imbalance that cannot be corrected. Over time, this will greatly increase the probability of an injury to occur.

I saw their cleats at Sports Authority. They were football cleats and they were the same ones our oline uses (has a higher cut at the ankle) and I looked inside and wondered how much they must hurt breaking them in.
The larger the size got, the longer they got as well, but not much wider.
I got a clue then as to what our Warriors must have to deal with.
I hope Coach Mack got the attention of UA on this as I am sure some players made this issue known. It’s kind of a big deal.

2009 is going to be an even bigger year for the warrior program. it will have much significance towards our future as a football program. inspite of the fact, which we all know, that this will be another year where we have so much rebuilding to do especially on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage we need to produce in 2009.
what we do in 2009 will heavily impact our recruiting efforts, fan popularity, attendance, and national appeal as an up and coming program.
i am sure that mack understands this.

Booked some vacation time in Las Vegas for April 8 to 13. One week later,
UH announces the April 11 scrimmage. Talk about bad timing. Would have
looked forward to meetings Tsaikos coming from Oahu for a tailgate. Oh well,
will have to wait till Sept (Fri) tailgate in Vegas. I attended the UH vs Montana
game on Maui years ago. Maui welcomed the game with tailgates and I
believe the attendance was about 15,000 plus for the game.

Agreed for 2009, we must produce. One thing I like though, it’s somewhat easier to reload the defense, provided you have the horses, than the offense. Once you have your basic defensive packages in place, the rest is mostly reactive to what the opponent actually does, while the offense must completely learn all the minute offensive details in order to execute properly. We’ve seen it last year with all the sputtering and screw-ups, too much thinking.
This year, the offense has much more time to get in sync, not to mention, hopefully, a much better practice plan.
For 2009 I’m looking for ten wins and battling Boise for the WAC CS at Aloha in front of a raucous sell-out..
C’mon guys, I’m giving out olive branches on the pink site. I even offered to have Pride. appear at one of their bachelorette parties.

I regret that we won’t be seeing Heun as an RB on a regular basis. If the coaches are confident to move KP and JH out of the RB position, then I’m gonna expect that the returning and incoming RBs will be pretty good. True, JH was more of an unknown quantity, Kealoha was great back there.

I remember the stone cold look on Kanekoa’s face when she got a jumper and ran back on defense while throwing her hair tie off to the sidelines as if to say, “it’s on and Boise is going down”.
She was a machine during that 16-0 run and throughout the game. No doubt the others fed off this.

According to a person in the know (Doris Sullivan) the Arizona Western signing is just a contingency back up plan for Chad and Benson. They are both a little short on their SAT scores to enter UH but they still have time to make it. If they don’t make it, then they have schollies waiting at Az Western.

Thank you for posting the information from Doris. It actually is a pretty common thing for recruits to sign 2 letters of intent, just in case they do not qualify for their D-IA school they have a backup school. It is too bad that the athletes might lose out on entering UH as freshmen–I hope that they get qualified and am glad that they have time.
The Miami Dolphins just signed a player to take Samson’s job at C. Here is one take on it.
The really bad thing is that the Dolphins management and coaches seems to be happy with both of their starting guards from last season, and both return. Plus, they signed another C/G last week that was coached by Miami’s current head coach.
If Samson is going to get a big payday on his next contract, he has to start next season. However, Miami currently has other players slotted to start at C and both guard spots, and they signed that C/G Berger that their head coach likes.

The tough thing for Samson is that he doesn’t fit what they want to do, but I think they still recognize that he’s talented at what he does. So if you can’t find good value for him in a trade, then do you just keep him on the bench for depth (assuming someone else takes a starting role — he still could fight back with a vengeance and start somewhere on the line)?
And yes, I saw the STEM article. At least with regards to mathematics, because that’s my field of (limited) expertise, that’s why I want to start introducing more math research into our curriculum, or at least kick start a program where students can dabble into some research on basic topics. I’m doing two projects/reports on topics that are not only completely comprehendable to high schoolers (I’m going to present these talks to them too, if time allows), but they could probably do good research themselves on these very same topics. It’s college math, but it’s simple enough where they can learn it. We need to do things like that to encourage the STEM fields.
If some of my kids don’t even realize that different colleges (e.g., UH vs. HPU) have different core requirements and offer different types of courses, then even more so that they don’t realize what interesting topics there are in STEM fields. Something like that doesn’t require much in funding or grants — Google and access to libraries like Hamilton Library at UH-Mānoa, those are tremendous sources to get them started. Then if funding can come about from this, maybe we can start taking kids or teachers to conferences, get them introduced to what lies beyond the horizon.
In fact, I was going to try looking for some private funding from local businesses to fund such trips, but I’ve since realized that none of the kids we have now would be ready to be introduced to a barrage of mathematical research — it would be too much to take in. But maybe if I attend every year, take a week off to go and attend different talks, network with people across the country, get their help over the Internet with interesting topics … For example, we had Dr. Ken Ono from the University of Wisconsin-Madison come over last week, and we talked a bit about some topics in number theory that I could introduce to the kids as well (heck, those were topics interesting to ME). Just for me to learn these things, and to share them with my students, that would be a great way to showcase what mathematics is about.

That reminds me — A-House, they re-opened Salad Creations! I think they might be honoring those punch cards like the one I gave you, so maybe you might want to try it. The prices went a bit up, and they took some stuff off the menu, but it’s pretty much the same. They now include half and full salads (thank goodness, the previous owner started selling half salads as fulls, what a rip off). No Asian peanut dressing, though, because of the peanut thing. They used Asian ginger dressing. I don’t really care for ginger.

They’re not qualifiers yet. Then again, nobody is a qualifier until graduating from high school.
So, they have three options:
1. Qualify and play for UH.
2. Go to a JC (but if they’re non-qualifiers they can’t come back until they earn their AA and sufficient credits toward their four-year degrees).
3. Go to West Oahu, where they only need to earn 24 qualifying credits (UH doesn’t look at SAT scores from four-year-college transfers).
Sounds like it’s an SAT issue. But they can take the SAT every month through June. So there’s time, I imagine.

west oahu seems like the best option, 12 credits, can be taken in one year time plus 2 summer schools-right after graduation and after a year at west oahu…softer load to make the gpa high enough to transfer…
