Another weekly honor for Hartong

- Hawaii senior Emily Hartong, who led the Rainbow Wahine to road wins over Long Beach State and UC Irvine last week, was named the Big West Volleyball Player of the Week for the third time this season.
- The All-American outside hitter led Hawaii in kills, digs and hitting percentage as the Wahine remained unbeaten in conference play at 4-0. She posted back-to-back double-doubles in the sweep of the 49ers and the four-setter against the Anteaters, extending UH’s winning streak against Big West opponents to 22 straight.
Hartong had 14 kills and 11 digs while hitting .414 (14-2-29) against Long Beach State Friday. On Saturday, she had her fifth match with 20 or more kills, finishing with 25 against UCI , adding 11 digs for her eighth double-double this season. She also hit .488 (25-4-43) clip and was in on five blocks. - Hartong leads the Big West in total kills (259) and kills per set (4.62), while ranking No. 8 in hitting percentage (.308).

Well deserved and EARNED. Excellence sustained for 3 and 1/2 years and climbing and also providing reasons for future recruits, why they should come play for the Wahine. Emily reminds me of the North Star, shining bright and surrounded by a host of other stars all edging towards a goal. Well, we’ll see soon if Hartong will again win the National Player of the Week like she did last season. She certainly deserves it.
Against Wisconsin and Minnesota, Kelsey Robinson had 50 kills (6.3 avg at .417) and 29 digs (avg 3.6), she’ll probably get it.
No denying Em is the main weapon of 2013 Wahine team, but this year she is getting help from whole team’s focus and effort. More telling is her quiet, assured leadership which is keeping everyone focused on team’s number one goal. She and senior mates are making this last go around one for the books – record and story. Em is star and go to girl, but I’m sure she would gladly spread the accolades around to achieve the team’s ultimate goals. 7 seniors have put so much into team and will no doubt take so much with them, but they have represented Hawaii and UH so well. Lifted hearts and spirits in the Wahine faithful and made us proud. Go Wahine!

Kelsey Robinson now has won the NPOW playing for two different schools, Tennessee and Nebraska.
