Wahine up to 5th in poll, receive 4 votes
The Hawaii volleyball team, riding a 13-match winning streak, moved up a spot to No. 5 in the AVCA Coaches Top 25 Division I poll announced today.
The Rainbow Wahine (15-1) received four first-place votes, one more than last week’s poll.
The top five teams all moved up one place, beginning with new No. 1 USC (14-1, 47 votes). Behind the Women of Troy are Florida (15-1, 6 votes), Texas (10-2, 2 votes), Penn State (12-2) and Hawaii.
Last week’s No. 1 Washington (11-1) fell to No. 6 after being upset by unranked Colorado in Bolder, Colo. Michigan State (15-1, 1 vote) jumped two spots to No. 7 followed by Stanford (10-3), Nebraska (11-2) and North Carolina (15-0).
The Wahine (4-0 Big West) host UC Santa Barbara Friday and Cal Poly Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UH is a solid #5 this week, with 88 more points than #6 Washington.
In addition to the three who voted UH #1 last week, Glenn Kiriyama of Binghamton University voted UH #1 this week. Erin Lindsey (Dartmouth) and Steve Loeswick (North Florida) both voted UH 8th, the lowest of all voters.
Melissa Stokes (Missouri State) voted Michigan State #1 this week, in addition to last week. The remaining votes are not identical between the two ballots, so her vote this week appears to be legitimate. So that is the missing #1 vote.

Are you looking at week 6 ? I just went back and counted 60 voters and the 4 I listed in #3 didn’t vote.
Never mind I see that you are counting the # 1 votes.So much for accuracy with the Voter Ballots link.
It is not clear whether four people did not vote or voted too late for the voter ballot detailed excel file to be updated. I do not know what happens when a voter turns in a late ballot or fails to vote at all (does AVCA use the prior week’s vote)?
It is clear that the AVCA has counted at least 59 votes by counting the #1s. I identified one vote for MSU that was not shown in the week 6 poll, so I assume that is the missing #1 (i.e., someone forgot to put a (1) next to MSU in the poll.
In any case, whatever the reasons, UH is a solid #5.

Hartong Stars In Two Rainbow Wahine Road Wins

Senior Emily Hartong (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) sparked Hawai‘i to road wins over Long Beach State and UC Irvine, leading the team in kills, digs and hitting percentage to claim the Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honor, the seventh of her career.
Hartong posted back-to-back double-doubles as the Rainbow Wahine swept the 49ers and won a four-setter against the Anteaters, extending UH’s winning streak against Big West opponents to 22 straight.
She delivered 14 kills and 11 digs while hitting .414 (14-2-29) against LBSU in front of a FOX Sports West audience.
Hartong then produced her fifth match with 20 or more kills, settling for a match-high 25 versus UCI. She added 11 digs to secure her eighth double-double of the season. Hartong swung at an impressive .488 (25-4-43) clip and also stuffed UCI at the net with a team-high five blocks.
UH moved up one spot to No. 5 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll and is 15-1 overall, including a 4-0 mark in Big West play.
Hartong leads the Big West in total kills (259) and kills per set (4.62), while ranking No. 8 in hitting percentage (.308).

17. Could you please explain how you got to #8 in rpi if Hawaii wins out? The comittee always screws Hawaii so just curious how you get 8.

continuing off maverick’s post in #16 above … it’s good to track how the teams that were on hawaii’s non-conference schedule are doing.
texas starting to roll in conference play, and even picked up one more ooc win against lsu.
san diego won 2 this week, but those wins are looking hard to come by in the wcc (they’re 3-2 in conference).
arizona started conference play 0-2, but picked up 2 wins against the oregon schools this week. (the win against oregon, in particular, was a nice surprise)
creighton had a surprising loss to butler this week, but it was an away game, on their first-ever conference road trip in the big east. still expect them to finish near or at the top of the big east.
portland st is now 5-1 in conference (and has raised their overall record to 8-8). they’re picking up wins. so is new mexico st (4-0 in conference). and south dakota (4-0 in conference). and wichita st (4-0 in conference).
the schools that were on hawaii’s non-conference schedule that will have some major issues are ucla (starting pac12 play 0-4, and they could finish at the bottom of the conference), northwestern (which was expected to finish at the bottom of the big10 anyway. they’re 1-3 in conference), and santa clara (2-3 in the WCC, and will probably finish somewhere in the middle of the conference).

I thought we had a 41 match winning streak in the Big West conference. Sure it’s not in consecutive years, but the Big West Conference should get it right.
#1 USC will be traveling 850 miles up the Northern Coast and will play @ Corvallis on Friday ( 3pm HST) and Eugene on SUN ( 12 noon HST). Both games can be viewed on the PAC 12 NW.
#2 Florida hosts #15 Kentucky at 12:30 pm (HST) on FRI, and Georgia @ 8am (HST) on SUN.
#3 Texas is at Austin vs Texas Tech on WED and travels to Lawrence to play Kansas on SAT.
#4 Penn State can be seen on BIG TEN NW on Wed @ home against #11 Minn (1:30 pm HST) and vs #19 Wisc on SAT on Gametracker (2:30 pm HST).
#6 WASH is at home on FRI (5pm HST) and SUN (12 noon HST) to play ARIZ and ASU respectively. PAC 12 TV NW.
Coach Shoji took a giant gamble with his early conference scheduling but the Manoa Guru is looking like the grand master, especially when it comes to playing on a tilted court against the NCAA selection Comm. The Wahine #3 RPI rankings gets a foot-in-the-door for strong post-season regional hosting consideration. Provided they run the table?
Fans have to be satisfied with the way our team has played on the road. I believe it is our senior group that keeps this team together. One game at a time…but kudos to our COACH and his Wahine!
Wow, BW teams really don’t provide any RPI help as stated so many times. Wahine would be ‘feather in cap’ of any team taking set, sets or match off us, but conversely match loss would spell disaster for post season hopes of Wahine. No choice, win out and stomp conference foes. Confident that Wahine and Coaches are more than capable of meeting this challenge then round 1, 2 and 3 after that only seeding & brackets will tell. Can do, Wahine, can do! Go Wahine!
23. Shoji has always scheduled tough. not his fault that Cal wasn’t as good as expected last year, which hurt the RPI. tough when you schedule sometimes 2-3 years in advance and you have to hope the teams are as good as predicted

26. I believe Shoji scheduled Texas before they won the NC 2012. My reasoning is that he always schedules for the three tournaments, teams that would have Hawaii senior players on their rosters. This year Texas, UTEP, San Diego, and Portland St.
