Warrior week (new Maui practice times)
Need a football fix? Here’s what’s coming up (and note the change in the starting time for the Maui event):
Tuesday
• Chad Owens is the featured speaker at the Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii’s monthly luncheon at Hukilau Honolulu (Executive Centre, 1088 Bishop St.). The $20 fee includes a lunch buffet. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., event starts at about noon.
• The Warriors’ 10th practice of spring training begins at 3:15 p.m. and runs until coach Norm Chow says it’s over. Don’t be late. Or be late, and you’ll experience UH’s version of spring rolls.
Wednesday
• The debut of the weekly radio show featuring former UH defensive lineman Michael Lafaele and running back Nate Ilaoa. It runs from noon to 1 p.m., and it can be found on ESPN 1500 AM. When we last spoke, the show didn’t have a title, but I’m pretty sure it’s not called the Nasti Mike Show. Suggestions? Call them in.
• Na Koa’s annual telethon is now a 3-hour chat with Chow and his assistant coaches. “An Evening with Norm Chow: Let’s Do This Together” is from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. (or until Chow says it’s over), and will be shown on OC Sports 12 and KFVE the Home Team. It also will stream live on nakoa.org. The coaches will take turn answering questions from viewers. Na Koa, the Warriors’ fund-raising group, will be accepting tax-deductible donations. Proceeds will help the Warriors. Rest assured, none will go to subsidizing Boise State’s travel.
Thursday
• The Warriors’ 11th practice begins at 3:15 p.m.
Saturday
• The Warriors will practice at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium beginning at 9:30 a.m. (It originally was scheduled to start at 11.) A scrimmage is expected to be included in the program. An autograph session is after that, and it will last until . . .

kudo to WAC players of week
Sball wahines Hawai‘i’s Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu and Kaia Parnaby have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for April 9-15. This is the first honor of the season and second of her career for Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu and the first honor of the season and fourth of her career for Parnaby.
Hawai‘i third baseman Collin Bennett has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for April 9-15.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, wafan!!!
Looking forward to Kaua’s Na Koa event in June!
Odd that ESPN 1420/1500 will have the new show at the same time as the Josh Pacheco show on 1420.
Yo Gramps…I think tacos are in the making….MWAHAHAHAHAHA 🙂
Happy birthday, WAFAN!
Wafan,

Mike and Nasti Noon Hour.
Does ESPN 1500 have a live stream?
BIK
Good point regarding Nate and Mike’s show. Woul love it if it were after Josh’s show. Not sure if Alan Kuwada is on. Haven’t heard his show for a while now.
@BIK,
I was wondering the same thing, and did some quick research.
It looks as though ESPN 1500 has split from 1420 and will be streaming at http://starcommsportsradio.com.
I’m not 100% certain about this, though.
Things the WAC Softball Blog WONT tell you:
DEFENSIVE DOMINATION!!! Yes we can hit, but our pitching and defense is STILL among the nation’s best!!! Hawaii has the 3rd best team ERA at 1.02 led by senior Stephanie Ricketts’ 2nd overall individual ERA at 0.95 and junior Kaia Parnaby’s 10th overall individual ERA at 1.14! As a TEAM, we have the 11th best fielding % at. 976 which also leads the WAC!!! GO BOWS!!!
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/softball/d1
If you get the ESPN radio app for smartphone or devices you can listen to 1420, 1500, and many other national stations. Other than that, you cannot hear 1500 streaming
Looks like starcommsportsradio.com is only for HHSAA games, not talking heads
Hey, gangees!
Happy birthday to wafan!
SteveM, I’m eating in your neighborhood at Jane’s fountain…
Good afternoon Tsaikos.
just in time for
the Mike & Nasti Nooner.
😆
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WAFAN!!!
This apparently is a day late on the discussion but some WAC $$$$ figures for those interested:
http://businessofcollegesports.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/wac-10-11.jpg
ST: Does Chow’s offensive philosophy include occasional “trick-plays”? Just wondering, as that wasn’t the case with the spread offense of June Jones.
We may need ALOT of trick plays to be competitive against USC in the opener…I’m really starting to worry about whether that may turn out to be a massacre.
Be of strong faith and have a positive attitude and enjoy the journey Bowwar for you shall see that all the worrying was not necessary….and no need trick plays because who knows the Warriors will surprise some people…Go Warriors.
Ouch!
Hawaii Softball RPI dips to #14 from #10 last week.
Your opponent’s RPI plays a factor and can be a negative even after defeating them, regardless of margin of victory and LaTech had an RPI of 164 heading into this past weekend. Road games are also valuable to a team’s RPI ranking as evidenced by our rise from 11 two weeks ago to 10th last week even though we split with BYU who had a lower RPI ranking by 19 points at the time.
Hypothetically had we played LaTech in Ruston, LA even with an RPI as low as theirs, we wouldn’t have experienced a four point drop like we did.
http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/softball/d1
The WAC RPI rankings are as follows:
HAWAII 14
BYU 36
Fresno State 65
SJSU 94
NMSU 100
UNR 153
LaTech 158
Utah State 169
We’re still doing GREAT. Going to be very important to sweep the Nevada series in Reno this weekend and the Utah State series at Logan to end the WAC regular season to keep our RPI in the Top 15 at the LEAST.
The Fresno State series also falls in that category considering their plus 60 RPI and the fact that it is a home game for the reasons I mentioned above regarding road games vs home games for RPI points and not to mention the race for the 2012 WAC regular season title will most likely be on the line during this last home series.
Happy Birthday wafan!
kevin, thanks for the softbows info. somehow road wins count a lot more than home wins. case and point is oregon.
still can’t figure how oregon is ahead of the softbows.
Whitey,
No matter, that’s the great thing about a REAL playoff system. All season, some people have been drooling at our NFCA coaches poll and ESPN.com/USA Today rankings and it’s stuff to be proud about but once the RPI #s come out and the conference season starts, realisitcally these are two areas that matter the most going forward.
Ahhh, slugger — in the heart of old Liliha Street. I read about a Historical preservation movement recently, and Jane’s Fountain was highlighted.
Two shops up from you is Hoy Tin Chop Suey (look at their dinner plates) and just below is the original L&L. Mama’s korean food is just across Kuakini on Liliha. Liliha Bakery is on the other side of the street on Kuakin–behind the new Longs Pharmacy.
You passed by another Chinese restaurant on Liliha walking to Jane’s Fountain. It has a long history–but was bought and taken over by the sister of one of L&L’s founders (I met her working the counter in the early days of the current L&L) . I tried it soon after they reopened but maybe she wasn’t there long enough to make a significant difference yet. I have not gone back since, but it’s worth a try. Yup. lots of fuud near your work place. Tell your boss. 🙂
Hey SteveM
You remember Liliha Market at the corner? Sold the best roast pork.
the secret service for the secret service is no longer a secret anymore.
I understand it is really an old article, but I wish to say many thanks for writing this.
duffer — I only vaguely remember it–it’s now a crafts/bridal gown store. I seldom went there and didn’t know they sold roast pork. Of course, back then there was Honda’s Okazuya on the opposite corner before it became Masu’s Massive Plate Lunch. Then there was the original Young’s Fish Market right next door to Jane’s Fountain.
Hmmm… now I know why I have these Tsai-ko cattle call tendencies…. 😆
There use to be a Kim Chee factory by Jane’s fountain also. The best roast pork was from the store at the corner of Kunawai Lane and Liliha. The guy got sick and passed away. Dutch Girl bakery was across from L&L. It’s now a doctor’s office.
SteveM ~
I was the last one in line the day Masu’s closed. About 12 of us still outside the door. KHON news crew shot us as a group. Guy next to me panicked cause he wen call in ‘sick’ to work. Hehehe…
Me? Wen Diana axe me where I disappeared to for lunch. I told her I wen visit a ‘sick’ friend in the old ‘hood.
SteveM ~ I used to stay with my Granpa up Lanakila Ave., near Kamaka Lane.
Dave…just down from Kunuwai Lane.
I grew up and still live on Judd St. Near Kammy’s store. Use to have my hair cut at the barber shop next to the store.
Dave Letterman — arghhh…I didn’t need to know that! Darn, I drove by that store everyday, noticed the roast pork sign, but never went… and I even lived on Kunawai Lane for a couple years before returning up Liliha. I don’t remember the kim chee shop, but we didn’t move to Liliha until 1963.
Kekoa — Lanakila near Kamaka Lane, huh? Small world…
Hekka and Pork Tofu @ Jane’s Fountain yummy!
VOTE!

dough.
I miss Perry’s smogasboard on Kuhio…
@Dave
Yep that’s the place. Even brought guri guri for the owner and his wife. I used to take back about 10 to 15 pounds to Maui. Kinda freaked the owner the first couple of times. The price was $4 a pound back then.
Masu’s!
I found their Teri-chicken recipe. 😛
Every now and then I gotta have one Melveen Leed Tita-style Vienna Sausage. 😉
…of course, Livingston Food Service moved to Liliha from their long-time location off Ward on Kamaile St.
“Herro, Livingston!” 😆 Can still hear Granma answering the phone! Bless her.
DaveLetterman ~
Just below Kay’s barbershop was my Uncle’s big white house and huge yard. Below him was my Gramps place.
Wow, I have alot of Tsaiko’s as neighbors. I should call myself Lanakila Warrior from now on as I moved into the neighborhood 2 months ago.
I seriously enjoy this blog. I will revisit to read more.

Hoy Tin location on Liliha was my dad’s first Restaurant, Gum Lung Chop Suey in 1956.
He later sold it and opened Tasty Chop Suey in 1959
on N King St where First Hawaiian Bank is now.
Neighbor of Tasty Chop Suey was a mama-San barber shop, she was the mom of Judge James Wakazuki. Must had cut lots of hair to pay for law school
It’s so nice to see Peaches every now & then on my way to and from work.
Do we have more Tsaikettes posting now?
Just give me back Tin Tin at 2:00 am.

I miss the mochi & peanut shop on Liliha above School St. Some of da best mochi!
sean (aka pcwarrior) — do you live in the Lanalika steet area now? Dave Letterman lives on Judd Street. I live just above Judd street on the ewa end. (Judd street becomes Lanakila around the bend). You, Dave Letterman and I should meet at a Cattle Call or Tailgate some day.
long flight delays, we just took all the rooms you had, but we fed them at airport Host coffee shop
met Tin Tin owner Jimmy Wong at Leeward Bowl,
every Sunday open lanes regular. Dad would never let us go to another Chinese restaurant but every Tuesday night, we would go to Flamingos on Ala Moana Bl (now restaurant row)

Thats when Nai Doo and Allen Maguire were at the HVB…
RE: #106
Chopsueyboy — so your dad sold the Liliha location around 1962? My recollection is that Hoy Tin opened one day in Liliha with a sign saying it was now the owner of the previous Princess Chop Suey in Kailua. Of course, we went and liked the food. 🙂
We used to live in Kailua and ate at Princess often. Princess is still there, but way different owners today. Again, small world.
SteveM
sold 1959 to open Tasty Chop Suey
hello buddy!…
You have actually created some exceptional points here. I specifically appreciate the way you’ve been able to stick so much thought into a relatively short post (comparitively) which creates it an thoughtful publish on your subject. In my opinion, you…
chopsueyboy, then you know my good friend ron c, who was operation mgr I think. he went on to start his own travel agency.
chopsueyboy, you also went to panda travel’s parties?? awesome parties.
plus we traveled on China Air in 82,84, and 86 to japan for home and home swim meets and cultural exchange. Ron C. made the res and Jimmy M was our sale rep from China Air.
@chopsueyboy
Gotta get al to take me to that place you mentioned. Can’t beat crispy roast pork out of whatever they cook it in.

The clubhouse feels so comfortable again…and the conversation is stimulating (the appetite).
A big MAHALO to Slugger who helps keep me sane each day by holding off the alligators while I try to drain the swamp.
OK, back to trying to get my taxes done! (after I vote for Steph about 10X)
BG, you not alone in trying to figure your tax.
#145 – BG “Th

Yes – peace, it’s wonderful. Thanks ST!
Is this the Warrior Beat or Yelp.com?
SteveM
@128
Yes, I live near the turn from Lanakila onto Kuakini. Been there for a couple of months now. My wife and two boys attend the Football games with me. We’ve been meaning to make it to a Tsaiko Tailgate. We met Koakane, Bleedgreen808, IWWTHM at Ige’s last season. I don’t remember the others that were there. But we had fun. Besides them I know Bulla from New Hope, he is truly inspiring! It would be great to meet others from the blog.
BG & Tom — yup… except that duffer and I now have cravings for roast pork… 😐
TCU @ Baylor on ESPN-U.
Nice to just hear the sounds of CFB. 🙁
SteveM,
Better check with your big toe first about the roast pork idea! 😈
Happy Birthday Wafan!
Go Warriors!
d1shima — I can limp pretty fast…it’s only my little toe. 🙂
Hi midnight — hope you are feeling a lot better! Can you kanikapila yet?
midnight!
Good to see you posting. Be well my friend.
whoa some old memories of the liliha/school street area.

Lotsa stuff in today’s smartfootball post.

Taking a short break from taxes!
Koakane…the lady nevah contact me about the donation yet.
Midnight! It’s way past that in Texas! Time for you to get tucked in and rested so you can get back this way again with Barb…still, it is special to see you here again.
Ipu Man…thanks for the chuckles!!!
Who remembers where the Golden Wall theater was? It was near the Foster Gardens. I remember being a little guy going to see Captain Marvel. I’ll check back later for any responses.
Thank you guys for your inquiries about my general health! It has been about 5 weeks since my operation, but I have been home 17 days now. So now, with the tender care and love of my beautiful wife, Barbara, I am getting my strength back. I am going for 30 minute walks every day. My voice has returned to normal, after turning hoarse because of this breathing machine treatment the hospital makes you do every 4 hours. Should be able to kanikapila with our Texas friends on their next month’s meeting.
I keep up with the blog every day so I get many good vibes about the Warriors and their preparation for the coming season. Can hardly wait till Football begins again. I am suffering from lack of football – itis.
Go Warriors!
How you koakane, it’s been a long time. But always lurking and staying away from the amusing bantor going on this past year. It’s a nice family blog again.
Ahem…sean, if you have trouble telling UHFan and BG808 apart…I have a really guud eye doc you can see! 😀
BG – Golden Wall Theater was near the corner of Fort Street and School Street. Across the theater was a park.
BG, I met her at Ige’s and I never met HIM, hopefully one of them is a him and you not calling the other less pretty! lol Now i’m worried I started something on this blog. I don’t want to get SMU’d.
(back pedaling, trying to remove two feet and arm from mouth!!)
Hey, midnight! I hope you’re feeling better every day. Love you guys.
That portion of Fort street (at School street) is now the Pali highway.
My grandparents used to live on the corner of Fort and Vineyard Blvd.
Ha ha…sean, I have a visual of you doing a moonwalk!
sean (aka pcwarrior) — no problem. At least you went out to meet some Tsai-kos. Blog names can be confusing, but you remembered she was a Tsaikette. 🙂
Thanks Midnight and SteveM! Just a little sad that it’s gone and replaced by asphalt. I guess the memories still linger.
Slugger, tomorrow is another early day…I’ll bring the coffee. G’nite folks…
Interesting that many of you live or used to live near my childhood home – 611-W North School Street – which does not exist anymore – the freeway has been built right over it.
My home was near the mauka side of Palama Settlement, and practically across from the power substation that still exists on School Street.
Lanakila Park was a favorite place to play. All the mentions of the various establishments along Liliha Street up to Judd Street bring back a lot of memories since I used to walk up Liliha to Judd, then to Nuuanu for school. Or I would walk along School Street, over the Nuuanu Stream Bridge – Waikahaluu Falls – to Nuuanu, then up to Judd Street. Coming home from school, I would drop in to Chun Hoon’s which occupied the corner of School Street and Nuuanu. My dad worked for them, preparing produce, and trucking the produce to various places.
Hi BG! Long time no see.
Awaiting word from the accountant on my taxes. I guess we’re filing late this year. Why do I procrastinate?
Wow! Haven’t had a chance to go thru all the links and stuff in that smartfootball post for today but this one is really good…Rick Cleveland’s farewell column.
http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20120415/COL0504/204150335/1177?cid=dlvr.it
Going back to bed. Woke up to get a snack. We are five hours ahead of Hawaii so it is 340 am now.
Go Warriors! Have a nice Tuesday to all!
BG,
No worries. We Tsaikos stick together. Mahalo for the rides to the SB games after work. WE HAVE TO GET TO THE WARRIOR BOWL ON FRIDAY, APRIL 27th, AT CHING FIELD. Too bad we can’t claim work on Maui this Friday. I have to go to class on the 21st. 🙁
Glad Na Koa sent out the FB schedule. If I can get dropped off at UH after hula class on Wednesday, I’ll see you all there after 8:20pm or so.
Yup, time to go moe moe… ssshhhhh, don’t tell BG I’m not going to be there at o’dark thirty.
Night, gang!
d1, st only get 25 more years to catch up with the writer, storyteller.
Yep whitey. Looking forward to it.
Like this one about sportswriting in his State, “Where else, instead of “No comment,” would an athlete respond, “I ain’t saying nuthin’ to nobody about nuthin’.” 🙂
So, where’s Al to ring da best roast pork and char siu cowbell?
…did I tell you I will be in Kahului on next Monday? Hilo on Tuesday? Kona on Wednesday? Lihue on Thursday/Friday? …just in case…
BG I will check it out, know she is back from Merri Monarch and will let her know.
Mahalo again for the support.
agree with pcwarrior the older style blog format is back
d1, living in puunene, baseball was the sport and the park was close by. i used to go to the games and help the announcer with the ball/strike light to the scoreboard. it was fun and the umps were legends. of course watching the p;layers and coaches, got to know them by names. most were plantation workers and quite a few were school teachers. duffer’s dad was a player and coach. in fact all his uncles played baseball. like they say, those were the days.
Nytal!
Good morning, everyone!
Thank you, all, for the birthday wishes. Yup, it was a pleasant one.
. . . another year gone and deeper in debt . . .
So nice to have the blog back to its regular self again.
This time of year the friends, food and family topics tend to dominate the bantor. The worst part is not being able to participate, especially the food part!
Spent all last week putting the final touches on the state conference and running the leadership contest half. My kids did pretty well earning three gold medals and the right to represent the state in two of the leadership events at the national conference later in June.
Now gotta get the kids ready to do lots of fundraising. Seems it never ends. HA!
Good to “see” BG and midnight posting again!

Dang, 37 degrees and dropping. So much for Spring!
Read the other week, I do not remember what the heck I was reading albeit it was an actual paper report(!) from the US weather folks, we are supposed to be entering a, roughly, 40-year period of cooling for this area. Lots of interesting information. But the jist was the jet stream was being pushed south resulting in milder winters for the rest of the country.
Time to head in.
Tsigh . . .
Morning Wafan!
Was that an earthquake or North Korea getting nuts again?
