Shutter faces “significant suspension”
Head coach Norm Chow said quarterback Cayman Shutter will receive a “significant suspension” for his recent arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.
Chow said he and Shutter had a brief telephone conversation yesterday, and they are scheduled to meet today. Specifics of the suspension will be announced at a news conference tomorrow. There is a possibility the suspension could extend well beyond spring training, which resumes with a practice tomorrow afternoon and continues through April 27. The Warriors were on hiatus last week because of UH’s spring break. Chow was in China for a family trip, and returned this past Saturday. The Warriors do not practice today.
Chow said Shutter served as a host during the recruiting period and was instrumental in helping the Warriors sign several prospects. Shutter was a leader during the offseason conditioning program. But Chow said he takes “serious” the DUI arrest and it “is something I do not condone.”
Shutter was arrested at 3:30 a.m. this past Thursday. He was released an hour later after posting a $500 bail, according to the police log.
David Graves remains as the No. 1 quarterback. Ikaika Woolsey, who joined the Warriors as a grayshirt in January, is expected to ascend to No. 2.

The situation: With two weeks remaining in the regular season — two road matches against UC Santa Barbara and a bye the following weekend — the Warriors already are eliminated from MPSF tournament consideration.
What went wrong: Injuries and inconsistency proved to be the Warriors’ biggest aches in this season of growing pains. Setter Nejc Zemljak and outside hitter Joshua Walker completed their eligibility after the 2011 season, and opposite Jonas Umlauft opted not to return for his junior year. Further, middle blocker Shane Welch missed the first half of the season with a knee injury, and has been unavailable recently because knee inflammation. Ankle injuries marred opposite Johann Timmer’s freshman season. In 2011, the Warriors’ inconsistent passing resulted in fewer rallies. This year, the Warriors created rallies but did not always finish them.
What’s going right: Maulia LaBarre’s first collegiate serve did not reach the net. The next year, he was in the playing rotation and, a year after that, he was one of the MPSF’s best middle blockers, as well as an effective server. LaBarre, a full-time police officer and volunteer UH coach, is an example of how volleyball is about repetition, and repetition leads to improvement. The Warriors took some hits with a young team, but should benefit from the game experience. Outside hitter J.P. Marks had a solid freshman season. Middle blocker Nick West was an offensive threat in his first UH season after transferring from UC Irvine. Timmer was the star of fall training before suffering the ankle injury. He’ll be a factor next year. Brook Sedore, Scott Hartley, Stanley Hinkle and Taylor Averill will be counted on next year. The most intriguing is opposite Harrison Carroll, a crafty attacker. At 6-1, he is probably the shortest starter at a key blocking position. But his offense, particularly out of the back row, is too good to be ignored.
X factor: Men’s volleyball teams are limited to the equivalent of 4.5 scholarships. Unlike some other sports, if a volleyball team loses a significant amount scholarship players (Zemljak, Umlauft, Walker) at once, it tries to re-invest over multiple recruiting classes to avoid a cycle of major rebuilding every four years.
The future: The MPSF will have a different look next year. Cal Baptist joins as the 13th member, meaning UH finally will have an even split of road and home MPSF matches. UCLA’s Al Scates is retiring after this season, and most volleyball people expect UC Irvine’s John Speraw to be the leading candidate as Scates’ replacement.

No dancing around the issue with Coach Chow. Swift and immediate (considering coach was in China at the time of Shutter’s DUI arrest). Chow sends an unquivocable message to players and public.
He has to lay down the law. Otherwise it would come back later to haunt him. Hopefully camen learns from this.

tough to think that the suspicsion arrest will be overturned. the evidence gathered is usually cut and dry.
tough lesson for anyone to experience for not only the consequences to be faced now. but, the dui hangs for at least 7 years.
hopefully cayman shutter will learn from this and so to will his teammates and fans.

Charlie Wade is in over his head. It’s difficult to go from Women’s to Men’s Volleyball. They should hired Sealy or Presho. Guys with Men’s Volleyball coaching experience.
Wade’s got to get more creative with Financial Aid, Ethnic Scholarships, Grants, etc. Yes, Men’s Volleyball only has 4.5 schollies but Wilton got it done. Men’s Volleyball players tend to be good students so find academice schollies.

UH VB: thought it was disingenuous at the start of the season to say we can go to any player this year and not just depend on the Giant German to finish rallies. There’s a reason you go to the the Giant German, or any finisher in VB. That’s because they end rallies.

I think we all assumed a pretty stiff penalty was coming for Shutter. However, Coach Chow did give us a glimpse into the type of character that the young man has and the type of leader that he is.
He will bounce back from this. The way he handles this will be an example of resiliency for others on the team.
What young people need to understand is that these types of mistakes can have lifelong impacts. I made a mistake when I was 19 years old that still affects my life today.
What does recruiting look like for men’s volleyball? Is there a “finisher” lined up to join next year’s team? Someone with the size, strength and skill to be a game-changer and terminate rallies? If not then I don’t expect next year’s result to be very different from this year’s.

To bad they already had cleaned and painted the lockerroom. That would have been such a nice punishment for Shutter, having to do that. Would have helped strength his shoulders and wrists, sanding (big circle), and up-down (for paintint). Like in the “Karate Kid” movie.

Not exactly sure why he left, especially since he didn’t tell anybody. After the fall semester, he stopped returning the coaches’ calls. Too bad. I liked him. He had a real live arm, too.
Maar might be that finisher for the volleyball Warriors.
Marks had a decent year, but he sometimes got blocked because he would hit the same direction all of the time. But Joshua Walker did that early in his career, then became a pretty good all-points hitter. Marks will be better.

I’m curious about the libero position. They’re bringing in players from Kamehameha and Moanalua. Cheape will be back. If Gus Tuaniga can ever get cleared, he would be a good libero. So, too, would Scott Hartley. I don’t think UH has had a tall libero since Matt Motter. That’s always handy on tipped shots. Long Beach’s libero is 6-5.
I met a reader at Foodland the other night. Turns out he’s a former McKinley quarterback. I think I wrote about him when I was covering preps a long time ago. Small world.

Libero – don’t forget about Harrison Phelps and redshirt Daylan Chock. Gus’ strength is his serve. He was supposed to be the serve sub for Lofy.
#16/18 Rainbow Wahine Softball team had their first practice in the state of Utah today at sub 37 degree weather (not counting the wind factor).
They arrived around 1pm yesterday concluding another zig zag journey when they drove from Las Cruces to El Paso, then took a flight to Phoenix, and another to Utah.
crazy that woolsey will be the #2 qb as a freshman. if stump stayed he would’ve been right in the competition.
I gotta say UH men’s volleyball has a lot of talent returning so I am not to worried. However I agree they need a setter upgrade. The current setter makes too many location mistakes and is not good in transition on easy free balls.
Would have been interesting if Tate Forcier came here, AND STAYED.

It was pretty apparent from the first week of practice that Woolsey is a pretty good quarterback. He can scramble, but I think Chow will personally tackle him if he leaves the pocket.
I think Nick West will be much improved once he goes through the offseason weight-training program.

Sorry, I can’t get excited about men’s volleyball. The only times I got excited was when Katz, Theoharidis, and Umlauft played and they are all European too. I’d rather watch baseball or wahine softball any day. In another year, Donovan might have to look for anothr head coach. Who knows, the way things are going. I think next year, significant improvement is a must, otherwise a red flag goes up.
This is a big week. MLB starts and The Masters is so compelling. It will be so exciting with all the best players in the world and Woods playing well, along with McIlroy, Donald, Mahan, Mickelson, Rose, McDowell, Bubba, etc. I will be glued to the set for all the action beginning Thursday on ESPN.
QB situation, you can never have enough players. In that position, injuries can crop up so fast. Higgins and Alo should work hard and get ready to step up. They are only a couple of plays away from being in there for playing time. How many times have we seen 3rd and 4th string QBs end up starting. More frequently than you think.
Unlauft last played last season. It wasn’t too long ago you were “excited.” (OK, that sounded Tebow-esque.)
With their up-front schedule, it could be a lot sooner than later.
Maybe they should let Kevin Spain practice with the team…It won’t the Warriors and he may prove that they’re making a mistake by letting him go…
I think Chow would have make a better statement about Shutter by saying that he was “immediately and indefinitely suspended”…How long the suspension will be based on the severity of the infraction and the player’s willingness to correct the situation. Afterall, Shutter is still a “student” and there is a lesson to be learned here.

As My family group awaits walking over to the SuperDome to cheer on My Daughters Jayhawks, a fierce Manoa type rain started out. Hope it stops before our one mile trek. Superdome is fun for Basketball with decent site lines even 20 rows from the top. Harrahs has provided free parking if I gamble for 30 minutes a day. I am ahead $5. for the week. Great foods as always here in the Big Easy. Have run into UH asst. Coach and a blog host from other Hawaii BB Blog. Before the game they scan the crowd and you can go on NCAA.org to id your pic and prove you were there. I’ll forward when I get back to SoCal in a week. Only bummer was losing my day-timer wallet with all my ID in Harrahs. Will need a major upset to hear Rock Chalk Jayhawk in the Dome. But hey, you only need to win one game more at this juncture.
I understand handing out a severe suspension but really a news conference to announce it….If I was The Shutter Family I would have to consider possible legal action…I mean the HPD doesn’t hold a press conference every Monday to announce the previous weeks DUI’s….

Right off the bat, was legitamately shocked about the drop in attendance to start this season for men’s volleyball.
Yes the Umlauft departure played a role as did the graduation of two other exciting/fav favorite players in Zemljak and Walker, BUT still the change in atmosphere since Wade’s arrival led me to believe that the fans would still hang on and at least give the start of the season a chance.
Was there a similar drop in attendance after the 2003/2004 season or gradual?
A lot of people get DUI’s but rare are those that get chastised in public like this. That’s a pretty severe punishment. Right now, he’s not Cayman Shutter, Warrior QB … he’s Cayman Shutter the DUI in trouble. Not a good place to be and probably feels he’s been punished enough, not to mention the fines and whatever might be levied his way legally… and he still has to face what Chow will mete out.
Nike is unveiling the new NFL uniforms tomorrow. Press conference at 11 a.m. eastern. Probably on ESPN, 2, or News.

Utah will showcase what looks to be a very VERY talented pitcher on paper. Generra Nielson has 203Ks on the season. ERA doesn’t look impressive, but ERAs alone aren’t always favorable to the pitcher’s true ability to attack weaknesses in their opponents. 203Ks… that’s the # to be weary of.

I not condoning or condemning Cayman Shutter action or choice. But I agree with coach Chow action on what he wants his players to be ( imho .. responsible and committed) while on this team and playing for UH

I have heard that at least two of the women’s basketball assistants won’t be retained. Not all stories end happily.

The NCAA RPI has been updated today for softball. The Wahine remain at 11 and should be in a strong position to retain that ranking from now on. After all five top teams that they played are highly rated in the RPI, California, #1; Texas, #4, Texas A&M, #13; DePaul, #15; and Florida State, #17.

Two things are evident: First, no respect for the coach. Second, the “I do what I want to do” attitude.
