Thanks again to Coach Mack for being our video guest. As I understand it, we encountered problems with “choppiness” during Mack’s segment. I guess the techs cleaned it up for the replay.

who are the projected greyshirts from this class?

  3. owen-16 February 6, 2009 8:55 am

i’m figuring one’s gotta be that hilo lineman. just hope they don’t drop the ball on any of the greyshirts like they did w/ noa…

  4. al ™ February 6, 2009 9:03 am

congratulations on securing what appears to be the best recruit class in warrior history. i know it will take several years to right the ship. it looks like this year will require even more rebuilding or reloading than last year. this year we will lose another 30 seniors.

so, do you start to insert freshmen and sophmores a bit more this coming year knowing that you may take it on the chin but, are developing the experience level of the whole team necessary for the future?

  5. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2009 9:04 am

Problem with grayshirts who aren’t on the team now, as I understand it, is they weren’t eligible during the fall semester. There’s a cutoff date for enrolling at UH, as well as the mandatory Clearinghouse evaluation period.
Art Laurel and Alema Tachibana were eligible and part-time students in the fall, which made it easier for them to go to fulltime status this semester and receive their scholarships.

  6. homey ℞ February 6, 2009 9:06 am

I wonder if the video will not be choppy. Noon huh? Damn, got a lunch date today. Hope the show will be archived for later viewing.

  7. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2009 9:06 am

We’re still on the 200-second delay because of the Pro Bowl contest, which, by the way, ended yesterday. The names have been submitted, and the winners are set to be announced.

  10. homey ℞ February 6, 2009 9:11 am

Why a 200 second delay? Why not 120 seconds or 77 seconds?

  11. SteveM February 6, 2009 9:15 am

    Good morning everyone!

  12. oxymoron February 6, 2009 9:20 am

I want to know what sort of urgency Mack is placing on getting the O-Line up to speed, to avoid the sack totals of last season. And what they are doing to address the personal foul issues. Seriously. Between those two issues, 3 more wins could have been had last year. ST, your thoughts? Could you kindly ask Mack about this?

  13. homey ℞ February 6, 2009 9:20 am

I see Toma is off to ND. Good luck to him.

  14. Pride. February 6, 2009 9:25 am

Everyone’s always blaming the offensive line for sacks. Tell the Quarterbacks to get rid of the ball. Tell the receivers to get open darn it.

  15. Paco February 6, 2009 9:27 am

Coach Mack, Congrats on securing a promising class of student-athletes! Are you planning on changing your recruiting strategy as far as over-offering? Do you think it had a negative effect on some kids that ended up de-commiting? I think some kids may feel that they may have a better opportunity with another school that had less commits for their respective position.

  16. homey ℞ February 6, 2009 9:30 am

I blame the defense for the sacks. After all, it is them who do the sacking.

  17. YpoWarrior February 6, 2009 9:32 am

    Coach Mack,

How soon will you fill the 2 open coaching positions? Will Brian Smith coach another area/position & hire a new OL coach? What duties will the other coach have?

  18. owen-16 February 6, 2009 9:36 am

There’s a lot of people to blame for the sacks but the personal fouls, now that’s a total different story…the blind man who just listened could tell that one certain olineman was getting called for a lot of stuff. PF, holdings, false starts, no need to say his number he and most others know who he is…

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2009 9:39 am

    Top Twenny!

  20. cavewarrior February 6, 2009 9:42 am

    Top 5!

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2009 9:44 am

    There’s a 200 hundred second delay… Now I’ve forgotten what I wanted to ask 200 seconds ago.

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2009 9:48 am

Will Heun be a rush end? Or an RB?

I’d like to see Steele Jantz at least get some reps as a QB for a while, and see what he can do before moving him elsewhere.

Will the team practice exclusively on the turf at Ching Complex or will they still use the grass fields too?

  23. homey ℞ February 6, 2009 9:49 am

    Coach Mack:

Now that Toma has decided to attend Notre Dame, what do you plan to do with the scholarship that was offered to him?

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2009 9:51 am

200 seconds is actually 3.33333333333333333 minutes for those who wanna know.

  25. homey ℞ February 6, 2009 9:51 am

DPK – Stop asking rhetorical questions. I don’t even know what rhetorical means.

  26. oxymoron February 6, 2009 9:54 am

Pride: yeah, different things contribute to sacks…receivers not getting open, not running correct routes or even lack of speed where a play doesn’t develop. QB’s holding onto the ball too long, or even running backs missing a block. But if you watched any game, you know many sacks were had due to leaky blocking up front, or slowwww feet at the tackle positions. Ultimately the O-Line needs to execute better, and that’s the bottom line. My question for Mack via ST wasn’t about placing blame as much as what they are going to do to improve. Don’t get your panties in a bunch!

  27. warriorfanny February 6, 2009 9:55 am

Will MAC make changes in off-season training–especially our OL?
Will Tony T be promoted to full-time coaching status?

  28. roysan16 February 6, 2009 9:56 am

    Question for Coach Mack

Quoting Bobby C on 1420 he has raved and said that when it comes to recruiting integrity you and JJ are tops. Is this true?

In other words once a player has committed to another team- 1) Do you still go after them 2) Close the door entirely 3) Leave the door open, and allow the player in only if it’s on the volition of the player

Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech has set a precedence where he has pulled a scholarship offer from a player who had committed to his team yet was still visiting other programs. What are your thoughts of recruits that have committed to your program and yet were still looking elsewhere.?

    T. Maka, a one time UH recruit that was scheduled to visit Hawaii, publically announced his intent of going to UCLA a few days before his scheduled trip here. In an instance like this – 1) Did he come? 2) Or did UH nix his trip knowing that it would be a futile attempt of trying to sway him away from UCLA-and basically save money and costs of having him travel here.

Thank you for stopping by for the chat. I join others in congratulating the coaches and recruits for bringing the big picture into focus.

  29. Pride. February 6, 2009 9:56 am

Oxymoron, I know what you’re saying. I’m just playing.

  30. addahknowjoe February 6, 2009 9:57 am

    Coach Mac:

What do you envision, not just as a program or institution, but as a community, as a state, an entire Warrior Nation, what do we need to do to not only bring a national championship to Hawaii but be a consistent national force every year?

    Never settle.

    Keep fighting!

  31. kama krab February 6, 2009 9:58 am

    Howzit Everybody,

According to Coach Mac he already has an idea on the G.A. position and a Special Teams person. He also said that he is bringing in two very experienced O-Line coaches to interveiw, so it will be a very interesting next couple of weeks. It really looks like there are going to be some changes in responsibilities come spring ball.

A-Joe – Not only picturing it but he is the center and you are the QB!

    DPK – See.

I wonder if we’ll see a couple of running backs in the backfield this season on certain plays?

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2009 10:19 am

It was actually hard trying to come up with a hypothetically rhetorical question in response to your rhetorical question… 😆

  39. roysan16 February 6, 2009 10:19 am

    22.

    DPK- Good question

Practicing exclusively on artificial turf has a lot of drawbacks. I’ve read somewhere that players practicing daily on artificial turf are more susceptible to injuries, harder on the knees etc. than it would be on grass. Ron Lee looks forward to practicing on the Ching Field because of the lights.

  40. duffer February 6, 2009 10:22 am

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2009 10:24 am

    roysan16-

Your question about Paul Johnson’s tactics is also a good one…

  43. PONO February 6, 2009 10:28 am

I hope everyone with questions regarding what it takes to become a national player and win a national championship has season tickets. I love how UH fans want to be elite but no one wants to shell out $$. People complain about $3 parking and ticket prices. UH games are a bargain compared to any other venue on the mainland. Even SJ St charges 15-20 bucks to park. Let’s get real here.

  44. PONO February 6, 2009 10:30 am

Everyone’s asking how to buy the porsche when you’re making minimum wage. I’m not saying dollars equals victories but there is a damn high correlation.

  45. morning dove February 6, 2009 10:30 am

    Question for Coach Mack.

If someone in the “know” told you it would be wiser to have your team practicing in the afternoon instead of the mornings would you listen? Getting the player’s body clocks more attuned to a time of the day closer to when they actually play the game-wouldn’t this make sense? Your thoughts?

  46. miconia February 6, 2009 10:34 am

    Coach Mack-

Pono brings up a good point. If the football program brought in more money from ticket sales and other sources, where would you spend it? What areas of the program are the biggest victims of budget shortfalls?

*On a sidenote, I am a proud season ticket holder, and we have a group of 31 of us in the south endzone red section. Personally, I would be willing to pay over $200 for each of my season tickets. But, there are some in my group that complain about the $110 price of our tickets currently.

  47. roysan16 February 6, 2009 10:35 am

    lol…too clever md.

  48. Willie February 6, 2009 10:36 am

Coach Mac, this year will mark 30 years as a season ticket holder and I really respect that you are a “1st class” type of coach.

My pet peeve is that unnecessary personal fouls have got to stop, these are definitely preventable.

Why not just suspend players for egregious “lolo” type personal fouls. 1st time you’re out of that game, 2nd time out + 1 game suspension. 3rd time off the team for that year. Guarantee with this system those selfish individuals will stop with this “consquence for action” plan instituted.

    How about it Coach Mac?

  49. Pride. February 6, 2009 10:36 am

My panties are always in a bunch. But at least they’re pink, my favorite color.

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid February 6, 2009 10:41 am

Can you state that in a question, Pride?

  52. mauiwarrior February 6, 2009 10:45 am

    Coach Mac:

With our new load of running backs, will the offense run the ball more? Out of the JC receivers(both this years and last years recruiting classes), which one do you feel will contribute the most?

Aloha and Mahalo for all your hard work……

  53. Kazz February 6, 2009 10:49 am

  54. mauiwarrior February 6, 2009 10:50 am

    roysan16-re: post 39

I was under the impression that the “FIELD” turf that was installed was closer to grass than astro turf…….isn’t astro turf the one that causes more injuries and field turf a, very similar surface to grass, more user friendly in competetive sports….just adding my two cents, although i could be wrong

I hope the Coach addresses the fouls that our players commit.

    DPK,

I think it was Gary (UH field maintenance) who told me that the team would still be using the grass fields during the week for practices & will be using Ching field on Fridays for walk-throughs. I don’t think Coach Mac thot my suggestion that the Tsaikos could play flag football on Ching field. (Don’t want to see you guys hurt yourselves… :)) )

Hope the video is smoother than yesterday. Good to see the Princess doing her magic.

Have a great day in Hawai’i nei, erryone!

Good question – hope it was me!

Mrs A-House is vey unhappy with the “choppiness” of the video because ST said that it would be better since they were doing it inside a “studio”. Whatever message Coach Mack had was lost in the choppiness.

That was fun and the video was flawless, all the way over here in Florida.

Great job, let’s keep doing that, that way we all can get to meet the whole team personally.

Coach Mack sure is a class act, I like his whole approach to recruiting, already planning for present and future seniors to go for their Masters. If I were a parent of a college kid, I would MAKE my son play for Big Mack.

I too was surprised when Coach Mack said his “first recruit” from Punahou knowing that Miah red srited last year and will be competing for playing time in Spring ball.

But, no worries as there will be many more from Punahou in the future if Coach Mack keeps refining his recruiting process.

Kimo decomitted because he had a chance to play TE and UH does not use a TE.

I was disappointed that Wade K went to Oregon, but he had his reasons and hopefully Coach Mack left the door open should he decide to return.

Uhh… Just woke up… Still chilly in Seoul. I missed the show!!!???

Speaking of panties; did you know the word panty is uni-sex here in Korea? Koreans use it for both men’s and women’s underwear.

Pride, you don’t have to get them in a bunch. One at a time at the Dongdaemun market in East Seoul is just as cheap! Haha!

    BIG KARAOKE CALL
    Saturday, February 7, 2009
    7:30 PM – 12:30 AM
    Krazy Karaoke (1308 Young Street)

A few Karaoke Call reminders before some of us leave our computers for the weekend…

    1. Per KK’s policy, we may enter the room (Green Room) as early as 7:15 PM. We must likewise exit around 12:15 AM.

    2. Please reserve the front section of seating and tables nearest the door for Esme’s MomsLikeMe group. This is so we can all greet them easily, they can make a fast getaway, and/or easier to get to the dance floor 😐

    3. d1shima will do the initial input of karaoke songs to minimize duplicates and even distribution. Paper & pen for requests will be provided.

    4. Did I mention it is a semi-dinner potluck…? 🙄

I watched the “re-play” of TWB on the Advertiser.com and it was a great job. Leila looked as lovely as ever and St looked like ST.

The techies cleared up the picture but the miking as uneven.

Might I suggest that Leila and ST be given mikes as the segment with Coach Mc showed low volume with the two and good volume for Coach Mac.

But great job and congratulations to all.

  123. SteveM February 6, 2009 3:22 pm

homey — can wear a Goteborg sausage too? That’s so the moms you’ve been inciting can recognize you… 😆

Nah, wear your Tsai-ko shirt–it has your name on both sides for a reason. 😉

  124. Mrs. A-House February 6, 2009 3:26 pm

A-House knows better now (after I grabbed him in a MMA headlock) that he is NEVER to post anything on the blog without my knowledge or prior approval when he uses my name. On his behalf, I am apologizing to Cheepono and HawaiianKiko for his insinuating that I am a poor sport about not winning the tickets. He was desperate to post something and resorted to nonsense that named me. So…

    Cheepono and HawaiianKiko –

My sincerest congratulations on winning the Pro Bowl tickets! Enjoy the game which promises to be action-packed and played under ideal playing conditions in our beautiful paradise.

    and…

    ST –

As choppy as the live interview video was, it still was very enjoyable to gaze upon lovely Leila, two of the most good-looking studs, Coach Mack and yourself. If anybody thinks I’m kissing up to you, ST, folks…it doesn’t work and has never worked in the past. ST is THE most honorable and reputable professional in the business and one of my favorite neighbors.

Enjoy a great Pro Bowl weekend, everybody!!!

  134. roysan16 February 6, 2009 3:52 pm

Watching the video, or parts of it, little by little, I noticed Coach Mack conveys a happy smile. This is very noticeable. I hope behind that smile things are going well. Listening to the exuberance in his voice one senses everything is fine.

Points he touched on. And goals that he foresees in the future is that he wants at least half his starters working on their masters in their last year. This is huge. A very good precedence to start.

He mentioned that he made the rounds to each recruits homes. And let on that the families took good care of him as he was glancing down at his tummy. Fostering a bond with the families was key. But again think how much of selling point it is to the recruits and parents when the head coach wants you not only graduate, but he wants you to graduate above everyone else that aspires in getting their bachelors-he wants the recruit to have the sweeter plum, a masters degree. This is huge.

On the same thought he mentioned how happy he was with Tony T. And what finer example to show to the recruits than to say that Tony’s been there, done that. For Tony can proudly say that all his hard work has paid off in the class room-with his 2 master degrees. This is huge. And Tony can be captivating when expressing to the recruits and future student athletes aspiring to higher education.

One question dealt with which recruit did he have to work hard on in convincing him to stay. And that was Chad L. And the beaming smile was omnipresent when he talked about the recruits, especially when he was glad to land Chad and the boys from Kahuku. And the rest of the kids from Hawaii and the mainland.

After listening to Coach Mack he alluded more so the character of the recruits saying that was important of which kids he wanted in his program.

This is only the first full year of recruiting, so to speak, compared to last years three weeks sprint of trying to land recruits. And as other fans have been happily impressed with the direction the program is taking…I wholeheartedly agree, too.

  135. whitey February 6, 2009 3:53 pm

    Mr. A-House,
Just checked the team website. It says that Miah and Uperesa are 2007 grads, so it sounds like they were JJ recruits.

  167. Kekoa February 6, 2009 7:52 pm

Those of you watching the wahine bb game might have taken note that E-Bolla stood and actually ‘acted’ like the coach for the first 15 min of the 1st half!

I guess he read my critique about the players coaching themselves while he sat thinking about his 401k. I won’t mention the score with 3:45 left in the half–I don’t want to be the reason a personal foul is called on Sensei Al for making a slashing motion at his throat…he wouldn’t believe it anyway…heheheh!

  173. Kekoa February 6, 2009 9:14 pm

Curveball ~ Before they built that reef runway, and neighboring Hickam Harbor, that area was great for spear fishing. Schools of sizeable mullet were ranging that area within easy ‘trow net’ range too.

You made me flash on Pops helping a friend bring his sunken cabin cruiser up. He secured the inside of the cabin with a 3 man life raft. Once inflated it popped the bow straight up. Then using 2 empty 55 gallon drums filled with air as floaters, he was able to level the boat and tow it in for repairs.

  174. Kekoa February 6, 2009 9:17 pm

Pops suggested they use a 20 man life raft for the missle cruiser…heheh!

  175. A-House February 6, 2009 9:19 pm

    el guapo:

I guess I mis-heard Coach Mack if he said “MY” first recruit out of Punahou and that would be Cayman.

I hope this starts the “pipeline” to Punahou as their team is really an “all Oahu” team with players from all over the island. Just imagine if Teo and Toma had to play for Kahuku as all public schools are basically restricted by boundaries.

Same can be said of any “private school”.

  176. A-House February 6, 2009 9:22 pm

    Kekoa:

This is only the 2nd game I saw Bolla standing up and “coaching” his players.

With Mrs Bolla as an assistant, it appears that Chasity is in the “background” rather than in the players faces. Too bad cause I really believe that she would make a hellva good head coach.

  177. whitey February 6, 2009 9:24 pm

Col A House, you missed the part about coach mc’s daughter is also at punahou and she keeps an eye out for future players for her dad. good kid!!!!!

somwhere lost in the e bolla case is how the hell is his wife the asst coach????

  179. Ralph February 6, 2009 9:28 pm

Tuioti’s did at Punahou, now I find out coach Mac kid is at Punahou….I had reason to believe there is a waiting list to get into Punahou, tough to get in, very selective and limited spaces with lots of applicants. Rock stars, just march to the head of the line….

  180. Kekoa February 6, 2009 9:28 pm

A-House ~ Seemed like he was talking story with Todd Apo the ref, instead of ‘coaching.’

  181. whitey February 6, 2009 9:29 pm

  189. jm2375 February 6, 2009 9:42 pm

Ralph – I think Coach Mack’s grandson (and maybe his granddaughter) attend Mid-Pac. I saw Coach talking to his grandson, who was wearing a bb uniform, a couple of weeks ago. BTW, Coach Trap’s sons also attend Mid-Pac and Bob Coolen’s son attended Mid-Pac last year, but I hear he’s now attending Punyhou, which actually makes more sense, since Nanci Coolen teaches PE at Punyhou.

  190. Ralph February 6, 2009 9:43 pm

  195. Garret February 6, 2009 9:54 pm

    Garret,
Thanks…. hope your papers completed and submitted with positive results.

    702WarriorNation,

I hope that you had a great birthday celebration!

I’m sorry that I didn’t respond earlier to you–the papers and other work *really* kept me busy! Plus, all this negotiation and contract delays was putting a lot of pressure on me and I think my posting was getting grumpy. Today was so busy that I missed the video chat and haven’t even seen it yet! I guess I’ll see it tomorrow…

  196. whitey February 6, 2009 9:55 pm

or will uh ever go to the college world series again?????

  197. Garret February 6, 2009 9:58 pm

    Al,

I think you were right and I was wrong on McKay…I thought I remembered his situation, but it might have been another player (maybe the recruit roysan16 mentioned in his post) that had committed shortly before his scheduled visit to UH. I remember that being discussed here or on SH.

  198. Garret February 6, 2009 9:59 pm

This paper ranked the impact that the players had with the Dolphins.

    18. Receiver Davone Bess – Of all the undrafted rookie receivers in NFL history only former Jets standout Wayne Chrebet contributed more than the 56 receptions Bess provided in his NFL debut.

    26. Center Samson Satele – Second-year center had a decent season, but occasionally found himself getting pushed around by some of the NFL’s better defensive tackles.

  199. whitey February 6, 2009 9:59 pm

sheeesh, thinking like this reminds me of when i made sure i watched laurel and hardy, buster keaton, eddie cantor, three stooges, the little rascals, and red skelton. not to mention lucky luck, capt honolulu

  200. Garret February 6, 2009 10:01 pm

Bill Parcells sure has a great contract situation–he’ll get his full pay even if he quits and takes another job with a competitor.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, quoting unnamed sources, reports Parcells can walk away from the Dolphins when he chooses, while retaining his fully guaranteed salary.

Last week at the Super Bowl, Parcells, the Dolphins head of football operations, told ESPN during a segment of NFL Live that he “definitely” would be back with the team in 2009.

But in 2010, Parcells, 67, could end up anywhere – back in the Dolphins’ front office, at a local driving range or back in New York with the Jets – and still be paid the final two years of his four-year, $16 million deal.

Texas Tech sure recruited well this year (getting an Oklahoma commit to switch shortly before NLI day topped off their class nicely) despite the messy contract situation with Mike Leach. The latest contract stipulations makes it seem like Texas Tech’s AD doesn’t want Leach to accept the contract extension and to go away instead.

Tech has given Leach a Feb. 17 deadline to accept an offer of $12.7 million for five years – through 2013 – following athletic director Gerald Myers’ early December offer of $12.1 million.

But Leach’s agents at International Marketing Group aren’t pleased with four provisions in the most recent offer, according to 92 pages of e-mails and letters between the parties obtained Friday by The Dallas Morning News through an open records request.

The existing contract doesn’t penalize or restrict him from discussing job opportunities with third parties. The offer requires Leach to receive Myers’ permission before talking to others about jobs. If he didn’t, he could be terminated for cause.

Baldwin said several Big 12 football coaches’ contracts require notice, but none allow the coach to be fired for cause.

Leach’s contract allows him to control his personal property rights, such as speaking engagements and TV and radio commercials. Tech’s new proposal calls for the university to “acquire coach’s rights for outside athletics related income,” taking control from him and allowing Tech to maximize its income.

DARPA is funding a program to create sustainable autonomous robots–no batteries needed and no human control. Terminator flashback…especially disturbing to think that the robots can fuel themselves on dried human flesh. So, these armed autonomous roots can live off of human bodies!

    Al & Big Wave ~

Do you recall the late 50’s out at Makaha when the Army would park a couple of huge searchlights on the beach? It allowed night surfing to become a really cool spectator event. All my heroes back then like Rabbit Kekai & Buffalo K. were the Kings of surfing. Lots of tandem teams put on quite a show in the spotlight. They did actually have a speaker system set up and would announce the top 3 of the night. I believe that their only reward was bragging rights.

In the day time I’d be out there with my dinky little paipo board. It was handmade in Mr. Bowman’s wood shop class at KS prep school. I was like a little mosquito out there pestering the big board guys by sliding in on the eastern fringe of the wave as they normally broke in that direction.

Pops was usually hanging around the reefs further to the east where the waters were usually calm…poking fish for our lunch.

  226. Kekoa February 6, 2009 11:55 pm

Esme’s coming! Hooooowheee! Now the place will really be rockin!’ May I place my request now for a song that you never got to sing at the Blog Bash?…. FIRE!

If you want, I’ll even bring a bass guitar so we can have that bass riff grinding out over a seperate speaker! More noise toys to crank up the musica!! Hola!

  227. al ™ February 6, 2009 11:56 pm

i heard about the night lights….but that was too far to travel in those days. we fished a lot with the family all along the waianae coast. after the second break in of our vehicle we stopped going.

however, i did catch a wave or two at the infamous makaha beach. my uncle was one of those beachboys back in the day with all those historical figures of surf.

  228. Ralph February 7, 2009 12:08 am

Al it wasn’t a breakin, kekoa was hungry and thought you had some extra fish and dem days the boys from the ceded lands neva use door knobs to get in anywhere..

Everything past Waipahu was considered ‘country’ including Waipahu! Kapolei was all cane field. Folks in the city rarely came out there. People really did use the coconut wireless to give surf reports…get to the nearest rotary black clunker and dial your frenz about the surf heights.

  230. Kekoa February 7, 2009 12:39 am

Ralph ~ Never went hungry when you were in or near the ocean. Never understood break-ins. Never had anything valuable enuff to steal. Never say never…

…and Ralph, thanks for asking about Diana. Pain is getting more spasmatic at times, and that really kicks it up to scream level 10.
