Kapolei's Brackenridge commits to UH

 Kapolei High cornerback Kalani Brackenridge told The Warrior Beat this afternoon that he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors.
He is 5-11, 165 pounds, and is capable of running 40 yards in 4.5 seconds.
He also will play for the UH baseball team.
His father was in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ and Minnesota Twins’ system. His brother recently signed as a cornerback with the J-E-T-S.

Iuta Tepa and Kimo Makaula are gone.
Liloa Nobriga is split 50-50 between Colorado and UH.
But the Warriors still are expected to announce a recruiting class of about 30 Wednesday, the first day recruits may sign binding national letters of intent.
The rule is that a school can sign as many recruits as long as all of the offers are honored for academically eligible recruits and that no more than 25 new scholarships are given on the first day of school.
The Warriors will meet those requirements. Usually a couple of players are not ready academically at the start of school. There’s also the gray-shirt option, in which a freshman delays enrolling in school until the second semester.
The gray-shirt rule is an option that benefits developing players. Many freshmen redshirt the first year, anyway, to adjust to school and Division I football. After that, they have four years to play four seasons.
A gray shirt may take up to nine credits the first semester. He then joins the team the second semester, participating in the offseason conditioning program and competing in spring practice. After that, he has five years to play four seasons. In essence, he has a six-year window. Think a guy like Rocky Savaiigaea wouldn’t have liked to have gray-shirted? Instead of one year of eligibility remaining, he would have two.
Bob Wagner was the first UH coach to employ the gray-shirt option, using it on Kaulana Noa. Noa used the extra year to develop; he ended up as a four-year UH starter and a St. Louis Rams’ draft pick.

The Barefoot League is hosting an autograph party at its Kapahulu Avenue store Saturday. Some Pro Bowl players, as well as former UH players, are expected to attend. It’s tentatively set for 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

    It is too bad that UH lost out on this recruit…he will be starting in the Big 12 at offensive tackle this season.

    Butte Community College coach Jeff Jordan was amazed how quickly Watkins learned to play football, but he had to get used to the terminology.

    “We were in a close game during his first year, and our guys were yelling for our quarterback to spike the ball,” Jordan said. “Danny said, ‘What’s that?’ ”

    Watkins was stunned when he started getting attention from major college football coaches. He eventually chose Baylor over schools like Arkansas and Hawaii, and hopes to start at offensive tackle following the departures of seniors Jason Smith and Dan Gay.

    Article about Travis LaBoy’s Mom.

    Curley backed Travis when, as a 9-year-old who was big for his age, he was banned from Dixie Little League by parents who decided he was a physical threat to other players after a competitor’s leg was broken by a sliding LaBoy.

    “He was crushed – devastated,” Curley said. “I told him, ‘One day all those people are going to be calling your name.'”

    Who knew then that LaBoy would someday make the starting lineup of a Super Bowl team? It wasn’t easy. Travis was not a starter on the Marin Catholic High squad as a junior until his older brother, a defensive tackle, convinced his coach, Mark Haering, that Travis would do well if he lined him up next to him at defensive end. Travis was not a model student or a teacher’s pet either so, after he flunked out of Utah State, Curley literally marched him over to College of Marin to take summer classes to get his grades up so he could walk on and play football at the University of Hawaii.

    By his senior year at Hawaii, LaBoy was the Western Athletic Conference defensive player of the year and was picked in the second round of the NFL draft in 2004. He joined the Tennessee Titans and his mom joined the NFL Moms on a Mission Squad with mothers of other NFL players. Curley still does charitable work for the squad and for her son’s foundation set up to combat autism.

    “She’s the ultimate cheerleader. That’s part of her personality,” said Art Curley, Angela’s husband. “She’s a get-it-done type person.”

    “No matter if Travis is on the field or not, she is trying to be the loudest, most obnoxious screamer in the stands,” CJ said. “She is nonstop, full tilt from the moment she gets to her seat to the second the game is over. It’s amazing how much energy she has on game days.”

    Article about Manti going on a mission after playing one season. It also mentions the 19-year-old rule, which is why he isn’t able to go on a mission right out of high school.

    Manti Te’o refrained from mincing words each time he met a college coach. Te’o, one of the nation’s highest ranked linebacker prospects, told every coach who recruited him that, after his freshman season, he might leave the country for two years.

    “I basically told them, ‘This is me,'” said Te’o, from Laie, Hawaii. “I’m LDS. I’m thinking of serving a mission, and I want that to be available to me. If that’s not in the cards for your university, I have to respect that, but I have to consider others.”

    Te’o is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints — more commonly referred to as the Mormon church. When male members of the church turn 19, they are encouraged to embark on a two-year mission to proselytize in parts of the world that may not have been exposed to the 189-year-old faith. Te’o would like to serve that mission, even if it means leaving college for two years.

    That was an interesting column today.
    The columnist, with a UCLA slant, takes digs at the perception that UH recruits are wishy-washy. What the columnist failed to mention is that UCLA is guilty of aggressively poaching recruits who have made commitments to other schools.

    Another note about Travis’ Mom shows just how much Travis overcame to make it to where he is now.

    She stood behind Travis and his older brother CJ when they were down on their luck and homeless for three weeks, living out of a van in Hawaii. They went to the drive-in theater for entertainment and parked at the beach to sleep. Curley vowed to her preschool-age boys that there would be better days ahead.

    “Without her, Travis and I would have had a completely different life,” CJ said.

    Cal Lee brought Nobriega to the threshold against a very formidable rush by Cabral & Co….I hope we get Liloa becz he will grow under Cal and if the NFL is his destiny, it will happen in Manoa as it would in Boulder…the difference is being a native son and playing in front of your own…Go warriors!

    The best thing about this time is that it is assured that a lot of young people will be going to college.
    And, most important (and this is a father of three speaking), there will be a lot of families that won’t have to pay for the tuition.

    It is good that Mac wants the UH coaches to visit all the high schools in Hawaii. This article mentions how that makes a difference in another state.

    Davis insists that his assistants visit every high school in the state of North Carolina every year.

    “The first thing that all young coaches must do is build relationships with the high school coaches in your area,” Davis said. “You have to build credibility with them. They have to know you’re going to come there whether they have a player or not. Coaches will say, ‘School such-and-such, I’m not going to go out of my way to help them because they only show up when I have a superstar.’ … They may never have a player. We’re going to make sure the coaches feel like we’re there to help them.”

    Mack Brown talked about the values they look for in recruits they go after.

    “He has to have the ability to start at Texas and win the Big 12 championship,” Longhorn coach Mack Brown said. “Then you want a guy from a winning program. You want a guy from a family with values. We used to say with two parents. With families the way they are now, we say one really strong parent or two strong parents that don’t live together. We’d look for him to have a 3.0 [grade-point average] in the core [classes]. We want a leader on the team and in the school and in the community. And look for him to be a captain.

    “We’ve found in my 26 years that if you get the large majority of those values, he has a high-percentage chance to make it.

    A school is allowed something like 55 visits, right?
    OK, that’s 55 to sign 25.
    But each recruit is allowed five visits.
    So a school has to have a 50 percent success ratio even though it’s only 20 percent of a player’s options.

    D-IA schools (at least the ones with extra money) are increasingly using outside services to get their homework done in recruiting. To put things in perspective, North Carolina State (not one of the higher-budgeted BCS conference teams) spends more on recruiting subscriptions than UH used to have in their recruiting budget.

    Increasingly, college football programs are outsourcing their recruiting homework to private companies willing to provide game film, player evaluations and potential recruits’ contact information for a price. In the Carolinas alone, the five public Football Bowl Subdivision schools – North Carolina, N.C. State, East Carolina, Clemson and South Carolina – spent more than $172,000 combined in 2007-08 on outside recruiting assistance.

    That may not be a grand figure relative to overall athletic expenditures. The $53,593 N.C. State paid for recruiting subscriptions in the last fiscal year, for example, represented about 0.1 percent of the university’s total athletic expenditures. However, in terms of overall football recruiting expenditures, that represented 10.6 percent of what N.C. State spent.

    More importantly, they provide college coaches a legal end-around on NCAA restrictions, offering valuable recruiting information at times when coaches are prohibited from scouting the players themselves.

    “These people have unlimited access,” said N.C. State recruiting coordinator Jerry Petercuskie. “We have rules and regulations based on the NCAA of when we can go out physically It’s easier for them because they have 24/7, 12 months a year that they have access to the players and coaches.”

    In the spring of 2008, a new NCAA rule went into effect preventing college head coaches from visiting high schools for recruiting during the spring evaluation period. The regulation was an attempt to limit coaches’ contact with recruits in order to provide top high school players relief from the pressure of choosing a college.

    Meanwhile, some scouting services hold their own player combines, which allow them to freely evaluate athletes.

    The consultants can meet with coaches and players at any time, an issue that has not been raised on the NCAA’s agenda.

    I actually would prefer the number of visits to be dropped from 5 to 3 for recruits. That would prevent recruits from taking trips to schools they weren’t serious about (which happens every year), and it would reduce the chance of recruits being poached late in the process. All of that would save on the number of unsuccessful trips…which would save limited budgeted teams like UH money.

    At least that way when UH gets a recruit on a trip early, that recruit can’t take many more trips. It also would make scheduling a recruit’s trip easier, since with 5 trips to take and a limited number of weekends there is a lot of jockeying around for certain weekends.

    Reducing the number of trips would also make UH even more attractive to local recruits. They can’t go on many unofficial trips to the mainland without spending a lot of money on their own, and recruits are less likely to commit to schools that they haven’t visited. Mainland recruits might take unofficial visits to schools near them and save one of their official spots to UH…and official trips are more effective for recruiting than unofficial ones.

    I agree. Sula could be really good in our offense, but there is a void if he doesn’t join, so I hope the coaches look to Eamon for some depth, unless of course they are really high on some of the guys invited from the walk-on tryouts. There look to be some good ones in that bunch.

    All this goteborg recipe talk reminds me of the proposed PBS contests this past season. The talk was to hold a contest at a tailgate.     Terrible waste of effort, but let’s hope that that scholarship will be awarded to a player who will make an even BIGGER contribution to the Warrior program than Tepa would or could have.

    the lady side line reporter asks the arizona coach what he thinks about the play on the goal line, the one where his qb threw a 100 yrd interception on the goal line..14 pt. swing at the end of the half. instead of leading by 4 they’re down by 10

    Young Rothelsboigah has already had a stellar career just a few years in. He also won the SB in two cliffhangers

    Laboy looked pretty ferocious at times.

    Some folks in our house are from Pennsylvania, so they love the Steelers. I didn’t have any favorites but thought that was as entertaining a game as you could want. That goal line pick by Pittsburgh six was just amazing.

    All I gotta say is it was the Cardinals game to win and they blew it. I would have loved to see Travis in there for the final drive. The drive before this Travis was dominating the tackle on his side and was causing a lot of havoc in the backfield. If they Laboy in on that final drive I feel the Cardinals might have had a better chance to win. JMO

    how can you not review that fumble/inc pass play at the end of the game? that was such a controversial call. and the cardinals are not allowed to challenge plays within the final 2 minutes. its all up to the booth. how can the booth not deem that play worth reviewing? its like they just wanted to end the game. i had no care who won, but to end the game like that after all it had gone through. you never know what arizona could’ve done.

    and the 3-d commercials weren’t so 3-d for me. only the paddle ball was 3-d. hopefully the shows tomorrow are better.

    well dpk…..its logical.

    today was the last time coaches could make face to face contact.

    monday thru thursday is the dead period. limited to correspondence and one phone call. not sure about the text messaging i thought it was addressed this past year, but, not sure of the outcome.

    tsai says surprises will be announced upon discovery.

    for example, liloa nobriga one of our top recruits is sitting on the fence as of today. nobriga has been quoted as saying that monday (tomw) is his self imposed deadline to announce once and for all if its colorado or hawaii.

    just keep your ear close to the ground or your eyes peeled to this blog.

    Why can’t Tony Tuioti recruit and go on home visits? Is this because of a NCAA “guideline” for the position or is it UH’s? If UH, they should change portion(s) of his job/position description.

    If, just if, Coach Mack cannot fill all the scholarships, how long will he/staff keep recruiting for 2009? Is there a “drop dead” clause for the NCAA.

    NCAA, I like to beat dead horses, but any new information on the Reggie Bush situation? If real serious, it may affect USC in bowl consideration (past/present/future) or may even lose their most recent National Championship. Com ‘on NCAA, show all of college sports that you have balls!

    so i count 30 recruits of which 5 are already enrolled this spring plus billy ray.

    that leaves 25. some are to greyshirt i am sure. typically the greyshirt candidates are chosen because of their need to get better physically developed.

    so we still have room to fill some of our needs.

    A-House, I’m not sure but the two things that I can think of are (1) he is not a coach, like al has mentioned (he is Director of Football Player Personnel) and (2) a coach needs to pass an NCAA test on recruiting, and I’m not sure that Tony has taken that test.

    i’ll bet trapasso is happy that he doesn’t have to fork out a scholie for kalani. on second thought, i think in the case of baseball scholarships, it would be more like “carve out” a scholarship since most players only get a partial. one of the last full rides in baseball may have been lavon largusa.

    glenn…..nobriga has since stated that it was 50-50 as to where he would go as reported by tsai on several occasions.

    50 % hawaii (mom, gf, frens)
    50 % colorado (dad)

    a lot of pressure in making a decision. perhaps some broken hearts no matter what he does. he needs to follow his heart and then no turning back.

    who knows he may choose another school altogether?

    Nobriga’s is one of the more bizarre situations. Somehow choosing between schools means choosing between mom and girlfriend or pops. Seems like a no win situation to me. I hope he gets his life straightened out, regardless of where he goes.

Tai is trying out as a defensive back, attended Kamehameha-Kapalama as a freshman (2002) transferred to play for his dad at Kealakehe H.S., 3 year starter, All-State 2nd team (Advertiser-2005), All-BIIF DB (2004-2005) also 1st team All-BIIF QB 2005. 5-10, 210.

    grayshirts may count for last year or this year. dependent upon how many scholies were available for each year. one would have to know the numbers for each year all subject to the 25/85 limitations.

    i think that the mid year jcs will probably count for last year. we had some projected grayshirts not make it through from last year.

    After that scout.com report, UH sent a coach to visit with him. That makes two (at least) home visits, as well as his recruiting trip.
    That’s a fairly large investment.

    Thanks for the good news about Brackenridge ST. As a baseball player, he’s probably a great athlete with pretty good smarts. Sounds like the makings of a very good free safety. Remember how Mack likes to move Corners to Safety, Safeties to OLB, so on and so forth.
