good get by the coaches
mornin
Welcome aboard, Ne’Quan Phillips.
welcome to warrior nation ne’quan! we haven’t had a safety that can lay that hat like you since leonard peters and jake patek!
Florida? ……..You no dat!!!
Ne’Quan Phillips, at 5-10 and 175 pounds, hits like 195+ pounds.
Great late addition to this recruiting class…hopefully they offered Brown and Jackson also…
Boise State and San Diego State may travel the most miles next to Hawaii when they join the Big East. They will learn the affects of long distance travel to the east and how difficult for the body to have maximum effort when physicalness becomes hampered due to long distance travel. Their loss record will be at least 2 to 3 more each year and for Boise to have 1 loss a year will be history. The 1 loss will be far and in between.

Good morning everyone!
Welcome to the Warriors, Ne’Quan Phillips!
De Plane….De Plane…De plane BOSS!!!!
Wow kinda Hot today, anyways enjoy y’all..WELCOME HOME WARRIORS!!!
Good morning Tsaikos!
Welcome to the Warrior Ohana and Hawaii, Mr. Phillips!
You will be pleasantly surprised by how much nicer our summers are than Florida’s!
Ne’Quan Phillips, what will you major in?
oceanography would be good for you since you are from Florida.
Rivals.com has Ne’Quan listed as a 2 star prospect, while ESPNU has him listed as a 3 star player. However I couldn’t find him on scout.com.
I like this kid a lot! Why has he not signed somewhere already…Hopefully he is not another that we lose because he can’t qualify academically. Can he sign his LOI while he is here?
GO OWLS!
GO WARRIORS!
GO WAHINE!
HOYA SAXA!!!
ST, any word on the other two recruits visiting?
great get. Phillips closes fast, real fast, is fundamentaly the best tackler i have seen with a variety of techniques (wrap n roll, bottle-neck, sideline shoulder punch, forearm-shiver, below-the-knee-chop, hit n lift, etc). phillips maxs his leverage and hits with a hammer–fearless with great instincts. Ne’quan likes to punish runners– watch him launch his body a split-sec before contact– he will knock-out runners….or get tagged for helmet-to-helmet hits.
AIIG:
I think they’re going to commit.
aloha and welcome ne’quan phillips to da warriors. thank you.
fields, pierce and phillips….hana hou!
my friend, arun, says g-men.
# 20 – – – GOOD news …
Article on Phillips is Miami Herald
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/hssports/2010/07/herald-spotlight-nequan-phillips.html
Thanks for the update ST!
the db talent and depth looks guud for the coming season, but will wait till spring ball to see if they can perform.
You can’t have too much high quality db’s. Great job NC.
Aloha Mr. Phillips!!!
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
WELCOME MR. PHILLIPS!
ST -thanks for the updates!
the only warrior safety/db that hit like phillips was nate jackson. but he didnt have the wide range of tackling techniques displayed by ne’quan out of high school. if he stays the course and keeps straight under demarest and chow–he will blossom bigtime.
He should be a terror on special teams right off the bat. Reminds me of an Antoine Windfield type.
Aloha Ne’Quan! Love the hits!
one down, now for a safety and brown.
I like the hit where does a double leg take down and slams the ball carrier. Imagine him at 200lbs his Senior year…
Any word on Fehoko Fanaika yet?
goodda morning again … you guys/gals just wonderful …… just wonderful mistah francis
news from da chow line just gets moa berta all da time. keep dat coconut wireless jumping
gotta make kope stronga to balance off the excitement building up. note to self only February still
Welcome to the Warriors Ne’Quan Phillips!
you gotta luv hoku’s style. he is so kool. his pic with charlie in lawrence was precious. all smiles. i believe fanaika is having a good time….kinda like a sailor on liberty after a long tour at sea who is cashing in on patriot coupons. fehoku? his mind is set….he’s just trippin’ n enjoying life.
I’ve seen this posted a number of times by different people, but I don’t think that SDSU and BSU will have anywhere near the travel challenges that UH has. My guess is that the schools in the western division of the Big East will end up being BSU, SDSU, SMU, Houston, AFA, and Cincy.
4 of the 8 conference games BSU will have will be home games, so no travel.
1 of the road games will be in Texas (SMU or Houston).
1 or 2 of the other road games will come against SDSU and AFA
That means possibly just *1* road trip back East. At most 2 road trips back East.
Note that Boise State has been playing nonconference games against Virginia Tech (in DC) and Georgia (in Georgia), so they have been taking 1 long trip every season anyway, even in years where they also traveled to Hawaii for a second long trip.
So, I don’t see the argument that their travel will increase significantly.
Put this another way, if UH could do well enough under Coach Chow to get into the Big East’s western division, UH would have just *1* trip to the East Coast each season and would actually have less travel time than UH had in the WAC (considering the long travel time to La Tech).
Yesterday people were posting that JJ should hire Stutz as WR coach to replace Reinebold, but JJ hired SMU’s WR coach a month ago. Jason Phillips was the OC at Houston, has recruiting ties all over Texas, and played in the NFL under JJ for quite a number of years.
Howzit Tsaiko Village People!…I wen drag dis buggah ovah from da lass blog.

My apologies for being late for breakfast this morning. Please continue without me as I am heading out to enjoy this beautiful Hawaiian day. (DPK – curb da violence brah!)
press button …….key music impossible
welcome and good morning mr. Phillips thanks for accepting this assignment. in a few months you will experiencing warrior football and tsaiko mania. much dedication, hard work and sacrifice will be demanded. if you stay the course great rewards and adoration will be yours. thanks again for being a warrior.
this tape will self distruct
music music music whoooosh
Just as I believed – no need to linger on loss of local DB to WSU. Life goes on & find somebody else (or 2) who is better & wants to be a Warrior!
So, anyone know who the other 2 recruits who visited this weekend are?
West Virginia just gave strong evidence that they will be in the Big 12 next season…the Big 12 plays 9 conference games and the Big East plays 8 conference games, which means that West Virginia would need to cancel a nonconference game at this late date if they were switching conferences.
West Virginia is going to pay the Big East around $24 mil and now they have to pay Florida State $500k.

Welcome to Hawaii Ne’Quan Phillips!!!
Kekoa,
That’s the kind of violence I want to see when those big TEs try to go across the middle on us next year. Other than on UH opponennts I’m down with peace and love, y’all!
recruiting is multi-faceted: contacts, networking, strategy, talent-instincts, sociological comprehension, histrionics, home-visits, one-on-one, personality, pitching, etc. perhaps, the most crucial of all is also the most artful–closing the deal.
whether its a business deal, a marriage proposal or landing a blue-chip recruit–it’s all the same–you gotta close with artful skill.
Quick J.D., call the Seminoles and schedule that game!!!:)
Florida State will want a home game. If UH wants to play Florida State, UH would have to travel to them. That would mean opening the season at USC and then at Florida State, with at BYU soon after that.
# 50.
no way, jose.
J.D. aint gonna put our team in a more precarious position.
Welcome Ne’Quan Phillips!!!!
thia guys a beast! Taliulu not even close to this guys level. No where near his aggression and tsckling ability. Great find and pick. Like someone said, “one door closes, another one opens
Awesome!
ST ~ The recruiting news just keeps getting bettah every day! Expectations are running high, and I’m as anxious as Big Hilo Fan to see the results on game day.
Hmmm…Maui for Spring scrim again would be great! I had a great time with Duffer, Whitey, BHF2, Stretch, P/Puff, Rob25, UHFan & A-joe in 2009. Maybe we can all *occupy* Maui again this year for our 1st glimpse of the Coach Chow 2012 Warriors!
Tis a good day in hawaii

I hope we can also land the other two recruits. But Nequan is definitely a solid pickup! Nice get!
1. kid
OPPS.
3 THINGS I LIKE ABOUT MR. PHILLIPS.
1. da kid can HIT
2. da kid got a name, “Quan” like cuba gooding said 😀
3. da kid can HIT!
i dunno if i can all dis excitement.
54.
now now now. we no need ruff up one of our own. or da dead. da dead is dead. dead.
Bhf2 i like your pidgeon betta den most people…always being possitive…and good comedy relief lol
Quan shows no evidence of making vicissitude on us, no change in da bruddaz wackability.
he is a full on wacka! everytime.
an how you like prose wit da big wurds? 😆
Lol…full on wacka!
Nah i no use big words…takes too much time looking up the word just to spell them correctly
da girls gonna love dis brudda. gonna hafta keep da young uns away from da Fla. guy.
uh….
MA…… MA……….
know what i mean? 😀
well, y’all have a nice day. back laterz….
Go Warriors!
@63. taliumu is fair game. no crack on his commitment vascillation, just a matter of contrasting talent levels. it’s called poetic justice. @54–go get ‘um, fans can rejoice with redemption 🙂
War E Or:
BigHiloFan2 doesn’t talk pidgeon.. he talks pidgin. It’s the rest of us that twirl our fingers and say coocoo coocoo while looking at him… 😉

ummm…. time fo chro in da music
BOOM LAKALAKA BOOM LAKALAKA
😀
i feelin you gettin my back MIH.
now take out da knife please.
Yeah baby I love guys who can lay the smack down and bruddah Ne’Quan got me amped up for this season. A pure hitter who knows how to lower the boom and ain’t afraid to put his helmet into someones chest. We need an enforcer in the secondary and a guy who can hit like that will intimidate people. Our defense needs to get back to that intimidating mentality and make the other team she-she pants. I love physical players who love to hit and Ne’Quan is an enforcer! Reminds me of Nate Jackson, not that big but hits like a frikkin Mike Tyson uppercut to your jaw!
brudda Jackson’s video clip is … UNREAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hope he likes fine dining. Coach Chow gonna teach him culinary skills. 😀
Ne’quan Phillips looks very good…What impressed me most is that alot of his video showed him playing in the tackle box and he was able to shed blocks and make plays…@ 17-18 yrs old he still had room to grow so we have definetly found us a great under the radar player…now I’m hoping the other 2 visitors will commit and that JT will reaffirm his commitment to Hawaii…
umm…
goals and expectations fo da Quan….
um….
jus chro da Quan at em… 😀
howz dat?
@73….
I wasn’t making fun of bhf2, and yes I know how to spell pidgin, its the stupid word predictor on my cell phone, I was just too lazy to fix the word that came out. 🙂
The Blog Host has a new friend. Expect more news soon?
you know guys,

Why does this article say Quenton Brown committed to FAU? I thought he just took a trip out here?
http://www.fauowlaccess.com/articles/129/fau-football-recieving-more-commitments.aspx
Was hoping we would be able to land him as well. I guess you can’t always get what you want.
Brown not listed among FAU signees.
http://www.fausports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/020112aaa.html
tsaikological warfare…
FAU posted that in January.
btw UH men’s basketball at 4pm…will it be on tv?
Hmmm…ok.
That article does say he committed to FAU. And that article was only written a few days ago (1/29/2012). I guess we’ll wait and see
If we could land Marrell and Quenton as well that would be awesome! Hoping for the best!
FAU is an inch off the map from the Bahamas…and the next
typhoon…
54.
I agree, thanks Wazzu for taking back Taliulu, where its is good to keep our local kids home and he would have been a good get, I think De`Quan is a much better player.
@76, ahhhh….a fan of football that appreciates art in the form of legal violence.
seriousily, watch his feet before he sticks, he comes up quick to the runner, ali-shuffles and bang! the foot-shuffles allows him to keep his balance and control a leveraged launch into the runner. you dont teach that. you CANT teach that. ne’quan is a natural.
I think Nequan is a far more talented, skilled player than Taliulu.
We definitely got a good one.
FAU signed a DE from the same florida high school (miramar) as marrell jackson. geez, so much talent in this area. go chris!
QUINTON brown.
Jkjones: You are an articulate fella I like reading your post (very intelligent). Keep it up!
carl pelini will make florida atlantic go just like BO. another of college football’s dynamic coaching bros.
@87. the article was dated 1/29. QUINTON made a verbal and didnt sign bc he was not listed as a faxed and signed recruit by FAU. so, he is either trollin like hoku or is lookin for some surenditipitous wonderment out in the middle of the pacific….brown has sand in his riddells.
97. 98.
we did get a great Florida player. fast. da brudda likes to launch and hit.
but mostly mostly mostly. Brudda Quan wants to play for us.
You can’t teach that. You gotta feel that.
and I feel da Quan in da house. We got a great player.
great great job Coach Chow. and Coach Chris. and to all the coaches.
great great job. and when you want to see the big island, give a shoutout.
a great hookup can be arranged. uh… at least an itenerary.

AIIG,
Who is this Taliulu kid you are talking about??
back laters gang.
Dynamite comes in small packages. What a hitter. I think he can help us as a true freshman, both on special teams and in the secondary. Maybe we should schedule Florida St. home and home.

Welcome to the Warriors Ne’Quan Phillips! Nice highlight video, looking forward to seeing this team come fall!
#148 good news…Thanks rog and tanks ah…
25,056 fans watched the K State mbb and wbb today in Manhattan. The men played at 3 p.m., the arena was cleared after the game, and fans were able to return and watch the wbb for a $1.00 on pack the arena promotion.
The men defeated Texas A&M, but the women fell to undefeated Baylor by 29. Bramlage coliseum hold 12560 fans.
Not much else to do in Kansas this time of year…
nor anytime of the year I hear.
Aren’t there nice army bases there?
🙄
People, mbb team is very far from where Murray St. is at. They are right now struggling big time against lowly SJSU, losing by 16. Good teams do not do that.
University of Florida is still pursuing San Mateo (Calif.) College of San Mateo’s Fehoko Fanaika. The 6-foot-6, 340-pound guard prospect confirmed he will travel to Florida on Thursday for “a few days.”
Fanaika holds offers from Florida, San Diego State, Fresno State, Utah and Kansas, among others.
Fort Riley Kansas, home of the Big Red One, First Division.

Forget about Fehoko. He’s not coming. Seems like “too many stars in his eyes” at the moment and we’re not one of them.

Exciting news, indeed! Welcome to all new Warriors! Can’t wait for this party to get started! All kinds of new names to learn too! This off season has been pretty fun so far!
Hope Coach Gib and our ‘Bows can get it together and close out the season strong. Had lots of good things happen earlier, but lost some magic lately. Hoping for a strong push through the end.
I am not very fantastic with English but I find this real easy to understand .

Last 2 “commits” – means that they go home and sign the LOI and fax to UH since they are HS seniors?
keep the positive “vibes” going for 3 of 3!!!
what’s with the blog?
“fonts” changed on me 3xs in the last 3 minutes – driving me crazy!!
Ne’Quan. This kid has some good form, a tough competitor. Just what we need. Read the Miami newspaper article about him — under the radar. Look at his film, he is not playing on one of these elite teams with perfect stadiums and 200 kids on the roster and boosters in the stands. He tackles for sure. I have a feeling we may be talking about the day we signed Ne’Quan! Credits to the recruiters who are finding quality like this kid! Florida has the best talent in the nation and not all of it is at national powerhouse schools! Get a recruiting foothold down there again and it will show dividends. Very promising. Starting to see the pattern that the new staff is developing. Instead of waiting for opportunities, they are making things happen!
😀
Gotta practiced those free throws! Almost cost the game!
Yeah Warriors win
Alrightee, MBB wins a close one 83-81 in OT. Very good WIN!!!! Stealing one from the Spartans.
Any road win is a good win.
Now, bring on Nevada!!!
duffer,
Thanks for translating the kapakahi post. Couldn’t unnastan dat one! 😉
A great basketball coach once said, if you cannot perform on the free throw line your chances of getting to the top are dimmed. Our past efforts, should they continue does not bode well for us in tournaments.
If the coaches cannot find improvement from players here. we cannot expect BIG wins in BIG games as much of the differential between winning and losing comes from the free throw line.
thanx d1island, took a dinnah break…
You did good.
😆
Tanks Ah with more breaking news, he’s hearing that Quenton Brown also committed to Hawaii. That’s 3 for 3!
When I play bb, we did not leave the practice floor
till every man hit at least 10 practice free throws
in a row. Sometimes we upped it to 20.
201
duffer,
Get one moa for translate. But deep down I’m shua the buggah mean the same ting!
Well, nuttin to do tomorrow…guess I will go to the swap meet.
😆
It’s great that the coaches got all 3 recruits to commit. All have speed and a lot of talent
WooHoo the basketball team WON!
…sounds like Hawaii’s free throw team nevah do so good.
Wea dey was playing? 😈
btw, right now…to me, Gib is one great basketball coach.
I-man,
Wacchu wen eat?
I smellin’ some adobo getting crispy!

Phillips and Jackson. Miami Vice!!! Maybe Mack was right. Hawaii might be the Miami -Florida of the West. Only thing, he isn’t the coach anymore. Good job new coaching staff.
Brown is exactly the kind of pass rusher we need, can’t wait to see him play
Way to go bows.

mmmm-mmmm good. Hope you had
a tasty experience, too.
Wonder where the three new Warriors will watch

pierce, fields, phillips and jackson…wow!
warrior’s want brown now.
three and we are done,
3 cheers 4 coach chow-fun
we’ll all rejoice and shout,
in chow we trust, without a doubt.
Tanks Ah gives some good insight into how we found Brown on the Scout board. Good stuff
kinda risky sending them home so far away…
If it’s all true.. three for three over this weekend!… whoo hoo… looking good.
#208, Maybe UH can develop a recruiting connection with the Miami area…..and sign up some of these guys for 2013.

great balance in 2012 class: Chow & Co recruited an entire D (11).
4 DL, 3LBs and 4 DBs.
On O (12) the focus was in the trenches, 4 OL, 3 TEs, 3 QBs, 1 RB, and 1WR/RB.
oopppppppss – font changed again – smaller now!
Great win for MBB tonight! Proud and delighted!
Kapakahi, good stuff…but keep in mind, the writers also are
very good in their craft.
Fehoko was not on my list of “gets,” but Patrick Hughes was. Anyone know what happened to him. He fell off the radar.
Patrick Hughes
Rivalsdotcom shows just mild interest from some schools…
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Patrick-Hughes-125625
but…thar might be other players around the country
with the same name?
Fehoko is a goner. If we did snag all 3 this weekend, how many scholarships do we have left for this years class???
WOW! Welcome to all the new Warriors!
Whoo-hoo!!!
Bravo to the Warrior BasketBows!
*burp*
😳
Hawaii failed to recruit a JC center. No one returning with game experience at this position. Hawaii also needs a break-away running back. Someone like Aaron Harris who chose Cincinnati. Lakalaka is more of a power runner like Toby Gerhart. Jerrfrey Coprich was another that got away, choosing Cal instead. Maybe John Ursua can be groomed to fill this spot.
whoa…slow down fellas. not all are done deals yet.
#222. bleedgreen,
OT Patrick Hughes (Butte JC, Cali.) was being recruited by previous coaching staff, so not certain that he was being re-recruited by Norm Chow and staff.
Even more so than Oline, I’m still hoping for a late JC DT signee….since only 5 DTs (Correa, Hanohano, Samia, Matagiese, Friel) returning….not counting Elisara (since assuming that he’ll move to FB)….nor counting on Lavaka or Allen to play this coming season.
230…we have afusia and maybe we keep looking and maybe we find a ping pong ball, yah?
you know what they call a ping pong baller, yah? toss the ball against the wall and the ball wil……
breakaway guy. we get two. anguay and amadi. they can move and fly.
lakalaka is perfect for this offense. reminds me of a cross between ilaoa, vai taua, and asiata.
Tsai san….
any update on warriors we lost to injury last season?

BIK
welcome to Hawaii Mr. Brown. I cannot wait to see you in action, along with Jackson, Pierce, and da Quan.
thank you for choosing us. You will appreciate da support us fans gonna give you, in that I promise!
Go Warriors!!!
Florida has enough talent to go around. The entire south does. It would be great to establish strong ties to Florida. Allan Sampson is our rep right now. Would be nice to pick up recruits from Georgia and Alabama too. If we can pluck a few players out of SEC and ACC country every now and then, I’d be happy with that!
BIK
#230. bleedgreen,
JMHO Kody Afusia (redshirt soph) will probably enter Spring ball as the starting center with Thomas Olds Jr. (redshirt frosh)….if can conform to team standards…along with Ben Clarke (greyshirt true frosh) as back-ups.
Chauncy Winchester-Makainai might be end up being the emergency center if the things don’t work out with Afusia and company.
This offense is made for Will Gregory…I think he will surprise alot of people.
boy o boy.
Tanks ah get all da inside scoops.
Tanks. Tanks alot!
The one player nobody has mentioned so far, and I believe he will suprise alot of people, is Miah. Maybe does not have the straight ahead speed, but he does have a very quick accelleration, and very tough.
Anybody watching the WBB Game, if so, what you think about the Refs? To me the Refs need to go back to Ref school.
ST, can you confirm that the other two have committed?
One the remaining JC DT prospects still uncommitted anywhere is Chris Brown (teammate of DT Mike Pennel at Scottsdate Community College)….2nd team All-WSFL (Western States Football League)….with 3 to play 2.

http://www.accac.org/2011/11/16/2011-all-wsfl-football-team/
BTW, DE Quenton Brown made 1st team All-WSFL.
Will Gregory is a nice player, I am not too worried about Coprich signing with Cal. I think Ursua will end up at RB and be a nice 3rd Down/Change of pace back for us.
The problem w/ last yr’s receivers was their inconsistency. Dropping easy catches, not blocking downfield, inability to get open on 3rd down situations, etc. This coaching staff will not tolerate lackadaisical play & will make sure that the “performers” play.
Congrats, Ne’Quan, in becoming a Warrior! Welina!
Not watching the SuperBowl tomorrow…going to da beach. Y’all enjoy!

I dunno about da rest of y’all,
but I’mma happy camper today. Da Coaches did good in selling themselves,
selling our program, selling UH football.
I am totally stoked dat da Florida speedy guys saw day got a great spot ova here.
thank you Coach Chow on a stupendous performance. and congrats to the coaches too
in selling our product.
Go Warriors! Thank you Quan. Thank you Action Jackson. Thank you Mr. Brown.
yep, i had a great day, and will have a great sleep. thank you thank you thank you!
231.
whoa Al.
no talk like dat. please pretty please. 😀
We have enuff talent in stock for center. the concern is at TB, where realtime speed is required. chow & co. did the right thing by filling the gaps due to dips n slips in the past regime.
im sure next year they will bust out for skill n thrill players on the O side. the good part about skill players, if they are good, they play immediately.
somehow, I’m not excited about recruting this year as in the past; kinda blaze about the whole thing.
can’t explain why – not pre-occupied with other things – just no energy to get involved as others on this blog are.
appears to be a darn good start for Coach Chow and staff – but, like al says, “not done yet”. Thus, raising the anticipation of UH bringing more recruits over the next week or two?
bhf2 – I totally agree with you, Coach Chow did a marvelous job recruiting these players, in the short time he had, to do so. Not only did he replace the players that the Warriors lost, but upgraded those positions in the process. Knowing the style of defense he wants to put on the field, it looks like he has gotten a few shutdown corners, so he is able to do so.
jkjones (250) – 1st things 1st. Need to build that big effective offensive line, which it looks like Coach Chow has done with the recruits he has coming in. If you look at the Warrior roster, all the offensive lineman will be returning in 2013. There is only 1 senior to be offensive lineman on next years team. With that said, you insert some shifty, speeding RB’s, behind that offensive line in 2013, watch out. For 2012, Coach Chow needs bruisers back there, cause the offensive line will be brand new. Coach Chow has that in Iosefa, Jackson, and “Boom” Lakalaka.
the next focus is to see how chow & co sort out returning players for spring that will essentially form the basis for his team in the fall. next, will be a glance at his staff personality and the manner in which they direct warrior team ’12. we are in need of team discipline that transcends above individuality….i believe coach chow will make his points, but will this team buy into it? they were all recruited by MAC w few exceptions.
bhf2…just telling ya what a birdie said.
jkjones (254) – The players have 2 choices, either, buy into Coach Chow’s philosophy 100%, or find yourself either, riding the bench, or off the team.
Idaho beat Nevada tonight at Nevada.
mbb…did a very credible job tonight in san jose.
over coming a lot of obstacles in the process.
the road,
zane held to 0 points in the first half,
down by as much as 14 points six plus minutes in to the second half.
overcoming the change of venue and travel,
zane coming out in the second half with 20 points including a critical 3 in ot,
busting out with a 16-0 run to take a lead,
battling the determined sjsu team in ot take a narrow 83-81 win.
joston hitting a career high 29 pts with 12 reb, (okay we can forgive you for missing the pair of frees at the end of regulation),
the tandem down low duo continues as vander chimes in wtih 17pts and 10 reb.
solid bench play.
great chess match by the coaching staff.
Punaluu (257) – WOW, we definitely need to fill the SCC this Thursday Night. Do not forget to wear a black shirt, it is “black out” night. The MBB Team is not out of it, yet, they still have chance, to win WAC.
@ 253 we dont disagree in general. i was responding to another post in #250. so, i have been on record as contending that Chow & Co filled gaps in his inaugural recruiting class and NEXT year they will prioritize skill positions on the O side.
however, im not as confident as you re making assumptions that certain players who redshirted last year or are returning on the OL will meet chow’s standards. perhaps they were under coached. Our OL was nothing to boast about in 2011. they certainly werent chow recruits. naturally, im hoping, as most fans, that our young guns MAC recruited on the OL can produce in Chow’s system. as for the others that redshirted at RB or on the flanks–ditto….we shall see. the point im making? when it comes to talent, you cant count it like eggs. the proof is in the puddin or on the field.
Hi Kapakahi. Thanks for info re Chris Brown. And yes, I agree, DT position could use more depth. Found some info on him on 247Sport. Two schools, Utah and Washington St., are listed as interested, but Chris lists them as “cool” interest. So I think you have something here. At 6’4/314, he is a load. He must be good to be listed on 247Sport’s list of DTs to watch for. Hope Chow and staff take a look at him. DE Quinton Brown is great addition. We needed a player like him for pass-rush with a 4.5 forty. Can’t wait to see how he performs under the lights.

jkJones… These are the guys left in the OL pool. Legay, Lolotai, Makainai are left. BUT Lolotai may be going to TE.
52 Waylon Lolotai OL 6-3 265 Jr. (Did not play)
53 Levi Legay OL 6-3 285 Sr. (Played 11 games)
55 Kody Afusia OL 6-2 305 R-Fr. (Played 10 games)
59 Jordan Loeffler OL 6-5 315 (Played 10 games)
62 Chauncy Winchester-Makainai OL 6-4 325 Jr. (Played 9 games)
63 Ben Dew OL 6-3 305 So. (Did not play)
66 Blake Muir OL 6-5 290 So. (Did not play)
67 Hunter Hollowed OL 6-1 275 Sr. (Did not play)
68 Sean Shigematsu OL 6-4 305 R-Fr. (Played 2 games before injury)
70 Frank Loyd Jr. OL 6-3 300 R-Fr. (Did not play)
73 Drew Uperesa OL 6-2 260 Sr. (Did not play)
76 David Lefotu OL 6-3 305 R-Fr. (Played in 11 games)
Last year’s weakness seemed to be due to one or two positions at most. Lack of experience? Lack of skill? Both? Who knows… but this coming season we will have many more players to fill in the gaps from the existing roster. OL has been working out, they have size, and a year off should have heightened their desire to hit the field. Oline should be pretty solid this coming season.
@ 256. expected that response. if you follow coaching transitions, in particular at A2, players never bought into rich rod. his hard sell turned people off. he lasted three years and is now in tucson.
urban meyers had a successful transition at florida. the gators returning talent was Ok (great recruiting class by the departing coach), but the team was undisciplined according to urban’s standards. they eventually bought into it, but it got testy in the first spring following his hire. he closed the weight room tomake a point.
Of course, i’m simplifying, each situation involves its own unique complexities.
The point being–transitions can be tough. it’s not as black and white as you infer.
Norm Chow is a guy that has uncompromising values that comes with 40 years in the trade at a high level of success. you wont see him fiddling with NFL fight songs or censoring our band or wearing slippers to practice. he has already set standards for lockerroom appearance and decorum. this is just the start. train wreck ahead or aquiescence? im all ears and eyes.
I am very happy with the 3 new recuirts but I would not say there there is a Florida pipe line. The reason we got these kids is because no other team offered them. Not saying they were not deserving but if a they had other options they might have looked else where. I mean they did not sign on siging day which is alarmomg
@ 264. again, ur counting eggs. 50% of those you cited DNP. the others have playing time. IM not a part of Chow’s evaluation team, r u? let’s see how it shakes out and hope for the best. im rooting for those athletes too. just REM, in Chow’s O system, we move on the ground first to make it happen. the hogs must win the battle in the trenches.
@ 266 we do have a florida pipeline. he is called chris demarest–our ST/secondary coach.
look him up.
Quenton Brown.
Ron Fields.
We got some skill defenders coming to play. mostly, we got a great coach with great values leading the way.
Go Warriors. Go show em how, Coach Chow. 😀
Blake Miur and Ben Dew are athletes. Ben Dew with a strong Rugby background, Blake played both sides of the ball D line and Oline in Australia and national title medalist in swimming. Their experiences on the scout team last season should pay off in dividends for the upcoming season.
Sean started off very well until he got injured. If he’s healed and rehabbed properly, he should be able to pick up where he left off. The rest were redshirts that were on the scout teams.
I don’t remember UH’s Oline roster looking this good on paper, ever. While unproven, it looks most promising. Add JuCo transfer Mike Milovale into the mix and I still feel very good about the Oline.
Ben Clarke, Leo Koloamatangi, Kiha Sai will probably red-shirt. These three are also excellent recruits for the future, as well.
My biggest concern for the Oline next season is probably the “center” position. Dunno who that’s going to be.
All of the US/Hawaii Oline players were either all-State, or all-league players during their high school years.
Fans have to be ready for a new kind of offense…It won’t be able to score from anywhere in the field like the “run and shoot”, but instead, will grind and blind the opposition. Possesion football is a key to this offense and that will become apparent after a few games.
We have the ingredients for a “good” team, but it will take some gelling before things start to come together. I still hope Chow gets another kicker/punter to back-up or replace the guys we have.
AIIG:
The other two did not commit on Saturday.
While I think they will commit, they will be discussing the offers with their parents before making a final decision.
