UH's best Bud
Remember the joke from elementary school:
Q: Does beer make you smart?
A: It made Budweiser.
Well, maybe that’s sorta-sorta true.
As part of the “Get Into the Game” program, Budweiser promised to donate something like a quarter for every case sold.
Seems like a lot of UH fans have, um, team spirit.
Tonight, Budweiser will present a $100,000 check to the UH football program.
Nice call on the part of the UH marketing folks.

dude is looking forward to being a Warrior
Manti Te’o narrowed his schools and BYU didn’t make the cut. So much for everyone saying he will go to BYU.
Garret, the funny thing about Byron Moore de-committing from USC is that USC originally flipped him from UCLA. WRs Randall Carroll and Devon Flournoy are two USC commits that look like they might end up elsewhere.
Nice to see the blog working again.

From a UCLA blog, there is a silent commit:
The silent commit is not identified, but if you read the comment section, the readers are guessing that it is either Randall Carroll or Tepa. From reading the rest of the blog answers, all I can say is that it is probably not Xavier Su`a-Filo.

As I’ve said before, I don’t ever remember a year where more players are making commitments only to decommit and head elsewhere. I’ve seen players, in year’s past, commit then take some visits just for the fun of it. However, this year, players are visiting schools with the mind-set of seeing if there is a better option out there.
this above quote is from Greg Biggins.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=West_Recruiting
And I agree, sadly, because obviously it’s happening here with the Warriors. And I might add it’s even happening among the coaching ranks, too. So I’m thinking the loyalty among the recruits and even the coaches is not like it was in the old days. Now a days, everyone is trying to get further up the ladder, which you really can’t fault them.
An interesting story I read was when the legendary Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes played Michigan and Coach Bo Shembackler (sp) and Ohio State and Coaches Hayes in a blow out win refused to take a knee and instead called timeout to design a two pt conversion and was later quoted as saying if there was a 3 pt conversion play he would have gone for that. Why all the bitterness? Story has it that Coach Hayes was so bitter at Coach Bo S. for leaving the Ohio staff and going over to Michigan.
This coming football season it’ll be interesting to see if there’s going to be any bad blood or animosity spilling on to the field between teams whose recruits or assistant coaches have decomitted and gone over to the “other team”. Will the USC coach, who lost part of his coaching staff to Washington do a Coach Woody Hayes move and purposely run up the score? Will decommits going to other programs have targets on their back, like maybe the UCLA recruit from Hawaii Stan H, going to Univ. of Calif.? It will be interesting this coming football season how coaches, players and even the fans react to all of this.
dpk I try my best

roysan16, in order for there to be bad blood over disloyalty, there needs to be a culture or expectations of loyalty as the norm. The way coaches move around now for the money, I don’t think they care about it anymore. If coach B leaves Coach A’s staff for a rival, by the time they play again, Coach A is in the NFL or coaching another team.
Lunch time!

My wife and I are watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed.
I turned to her and said, “Do you want to have sex?”
“No,” she answered.
I then said, “Is that your final answer?”
She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying “Yes.”
So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend.”
And that’s when the fight started….
Did somebody call my name?
Oh, and got plenty “Jokers” on this board!
roysan – I agree. It’s happening in the real world too. Studies have shown that the younger generation tend to only stay in jobs a few years before moving on. We were discussing it yesterday at work. They had announced the results of the employee survey and by and large, the older, longer tenured employees have a higher job satisfaction than the younger ones. My co-worker surmised that it’s because they don’t know any better. In sports these days, it’s hard to find coaches, especially assistants, that have been with the same team for a long time. We have several at UH – Lumpkin, Nash, Miano, Tino Reyes. I guess it’s the nature of the “game”. Lumpkin has been through how many HCs? 6? and Nash was under 3 or 4 HCs?
just my 2 worthless cents worth. š
Mouton isn’t in the Senior Bowl. He played in the East West Shrine Game last week.
Good One Roysan!

Since you used the pronoun “they”, does this mean that jm2375 is not part of the “younger generation”?
Regarding coaching changes, decommits, and loyalties…
It’s all about…”show me the money”!!!!!!
Good morning everyone!
Wow– $100,000 for football. Now if we could get a similar deal for diet Coke/Pepsi and coffee, the rest of us could really help… š

At this point would it even be funny if I said Manti Te’o is going to enroll at Hofstra?
When Washington this week reported that they were in violation of an NCAA rule it was brought to attention to the school from a posts that was read and spread on the internet. And what’s funny it was brought to attention from a supporter of a rival school, WSU.
Sometimes we’re finding out fans of a school unknowingly write things that may be against the rules.
Example of these infractions are when fans write in and say harmless things like we saw “so and so” coach talking to a recruit last night at the basketball game. And that is against the rules if it’s during the no contact time between coaches and recruits. And there are a few cases of this currently happening. What I’m getting at that these things slip out.
On the Boise message boards, and I think the thread has since been removed, I read how the Boise boosters, supporters and families would host visiting recruits-I thought this would be a violation. This is in contrast of how this blog 2x-3x made sure that no violation of rules occured when we had the recent Q&A with the Calif. recruit.
In summary is that what we are learning is that the internet through what posters write and report may expose rule violations unknowingly. And I’m thinking from now on if my curiousity got the best of me instead of posting the question here if the UH were in violation of a rule maybe I should just silently email the compliance people of my observastion. Okay, pledged…and I hear Al clapping in the background…
have a nice day…got to go….my first esme–wwwhhhhooooshhhh.

Are penguins allowed to attend the “Big Karaoke Call”? If so, I’d better start practice my crooning and get busy preening now. Too bad I’m tone deaf. I can squawk loudly and on cue though. Will there be fish?
Okay, got to go watch the young ones just like jm2375. It is really a chore having to stand around with the eggs on your feet all day long. Bye!
A wise friend once said to “idealistic” me that “money knows no loyalty” and he obviously was right (and I wrong) about (much of) the new generation of athletes, coaches and even corporations in general. Being an old-fashioned, old-school type of guy, it bothers me immensely about the lack of integrity & loyalty shown. The UH de-commiters irritate me as they (like the still-committed prospective Warriors) sounded every bit as enthusiastic about becoming Warriors. I’m really glad we won’t have those “wafflers” on this team as there seem to be precious few ambivalent players at UH. We need a concerted effort & mindset to bring Coach Mack’s vision to fruition. Hopefully the de-commits leave slots open for a few late surprises. If not, the potential of this new crop of recruits is impressive & the increasing quality of the commits is very encouraging. Go Warriors! This coming season should be labeled “PAYBACK” as there should be a lot of it this year.
Nevada’s Athletic Department budget might be cut significantly due to their state’s budgetary cutbacks. However, right now they get *much* more money from their state than UH gets I think. UNLV’s Athletic Department gets even more from their state.
Nevada is trying not to cut any sports. They are already at the minimum for men’s sports and cutting women’s sports has Title IX implications, so I doubt they will cut anything.
penguin — you’d be surprised at who and what turns up at the BIG Karaoke Calls. But BYOF (fish) too.
Please email me at: stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com to confirm. Thanks.
protector,
Does that mean that you don’t like the recruits that decommitted from other schools to commit to the Warriors? David Graves, for example, really hurt Nevada by committing early to be their QB recruit for this class…until a few weeks ago they thought he was still committed to them.
What’s worse?
Watching Jim Bolla run the Wahine Basketball program down the toilet?
OR
…
or…
Damn, I can’t think of anything else. Go figure…
Kazz,
Worse was HF giving Bolla a long-term contract extension without any need to do so and how he kept the extension secret until it was too late for anyone to protest it. HF did that while he was *not* working on JJ’s contract extension…
Firing Bolla means that UH needs $$$ to pay him off and to hire a new coach. Maybe that number is $200k, maybe it is $500k…that is a headache that JD doesn’t need and UH’s Athletic Department cannot afford. The women’s basketball program is going to lose money no matter who is the coach, that is just economic reality. Keeping Bolla means almost no ticket revenue…firing him means very little ticket revenue and a huge expense in paying 2 coaches.
There is a long list ways that HF really hurt UH…Bolla’s contract extension is probably in the top 5. At least top 10.
Hey Kazz,
Know what’s sick? I’d kill to cover the Wahine again. Now I’m stuck in City covering Chinese New Year festivals. Still, I pity the foo’ (Princess) who has to watch all of those 30-turnover games…
Garret, once again you are totally correct. So we have to suffer for at least 3 more years – 2 with Bolla and at least 1 more while the new coach builds up the program. ugh.
Many observations about lack of integrity and not keeping one’s word.
Could it be a case of “As ye sow, so shall ye reap?”
Hmmmm……
Hey Mike.
Take my son on a hike, please. He loves hiking and is in pretty good shape. He’s not so familiar with some of the hiking trails here, and you’re the upright, groovy, and innerlekshual artist type o’ guy who can be a good role model for him. Please email me if you’re interested. Tanks ah!
Oh yeah- He’s also an excellent photographer and graphic artist who loves all things natural and all things Hawaiian.
jm2375 — generally–generally– coaches with winning records get raises, hired elsewhere for more bucks, prestige, etc.. Coaches with losing records generally do not have rosy futures–generally.
So every loss is on the “resume” of that coach. A smart one would bail before his permanent resume is too badly deteriorated… unless one plans to retire permanently afterwards. š
Ok. Back from my Cat-call.
Off to Costco!
Kid — can he sing as well as his father?
jmxxxx,
From ATH earlier this week:
“Procrastinate now! Don’t put it off!”
OK, bbl. Gotta go fill the green waste container before I can watch the Sr. Bowl.
what time is the senior bowl on and what station………
SteveM,
I don’t think that Bolla is going to be able to get another head coaching job after UH…so I’m guessing that he’s not going to leave until he cashes in what is left of his contract extension with UH.
Just my personal 2 cents, but Hawaii’s decommits do not surprise me.
MAC n staff did a bang-up job of recruiting HS players,
I believe, can contribute after their redshirt year.
And, they went after them early.
JMO, early is good!
Further, many of these verbs were designated to move to other positions–like Kimo M. and that opened the door for poachers to spin a new line or two on our verbs.
Poaching is a neccessary evil that follows early aggressive recruiting…in a sense, it comes with the territory of recruiting solid athletes and is a hometown validation of a player’s skill and athleticism.
In the end, it is difficult for Hawaii to go one on one with top notch BCS programs, especially the PAC 10 and Colorado, where many of these programs have coaches with Hawaii ties (Brian Cabral as an example).
Whatever we can score we have to covert into better players with the system we have in place.
Many midmajors accomplish this feat–Boise State, Utah, Tulsa, TCU, BYU, Ball State, Rice–to name a few.
That brings us to another performance level–coaching.
And while, MAC n staff strutted well on recruiting, the best I have seen since Dick Tomey, production and efficiency on the assembly line leaves alot to be desired.
That is a whole other ball of wax.
curveball- Senior Bowl is on the NFL channel at 2pm. Time to find your Dish Network friends. Still praying for Kristin š
Catpix are posted- time to whoosh!
Garrett, re Graves, did he decommit before he tripped here? I understand that was Mack’s style.
I think when a guy changes schools it never looks good, and is oftentimes hard to explain. In Graves’ case, it may not look any better than any other decommit, but at least I understand his decision — his stock was rising, and he saw Colin was da man in Nevada and will be for several more years, and he saw chaos at the qb position in Hawaii, and regardless, even if Alexander remains the incumbent he is gone in a year, so he saw it as a better fit.
Just a wondering:
Maybe the UHAD can move Bolla to a different position, but let him keep his salary and make someone else the HC.
Does he belong to a union? Will the union object? If pay is the major or primary consideration, who would argue that the HC job belongs only to him?
Is it worth considering? Afterall, Bolla loses only the “ego” of not being the HC, but he is still with the program, no cut in pay, and, perhaps, the season can be salvaged.
I heard a rumor that all the UH coaches positions are “union” affiliated. Is this true?
If yes, how can Jim D remove this so that he can be much more aggressive in hiring coaches much faster, giving pay raises for jobs well done, promotions, etc? Jim D would still have to comply with the State’s requirement of XXX number of days a position must be advertised.
What would be the union’s reaction?
The Wahine BB Program is run so far into the ground, it will take a huge back hoe to dig it back out to where it once was.
How long was H. Varmint Frazier at UH? Was it 5 years? Regardless, he’s done at least 10 years of huge damage to our programs.
Moving Bolla to another Deptm. won’t do any good, he’ll still siphons off money for doing crap.
wbb 27 turnovers resulting in 41 points….poor coaching and poor decision making on the players part….but if the schemes are poorly taught, the TO happens…Bolla bad mouths his wahines….regarding rebounding, they don’t want to block out, duh, teach them in drills to block out properly…
Bolla and his wife (on radio last season) keep on blaming the girls for the losses, hello coaches, I know you are not on the floor playing but your schemes and preparations of the team contribute to their level of play…
I don’t even bother thinking about Bolla anymore. I don’t want to raise my blood pressure. But I feel for the girls on the team.
sjmacro: That’s a great post about RFL! I’m going to copy that, if you don’t mind. Okay, even if you do mind, I’m copying it. š
I thought they announced the beer thing a while ago? Eh, more publicity, I guess. š
lava,
This is what I pieced together. David Graves committed to Nevada on October 2. He committed to UH on Monday, January 5. He informed Nevada’s coaches the week before that he was decommitting to them. So, if his trip to UH was during the January 3-4 weekend, then he decommitted before his trip. Otherwise, he took his trip to UH while still a “solid” commit in the eyes of Nevada’s coaches.
A-House,
JD cannot have someone’s union status revoked when he wishes…that is a long process and probably cannot actually be successfully done during the years left on the contract.
If Bolla is shifted to another position and a new head coach is hired, then I’m guessing a new assistant will need to be hired also because the new coach can’t use Bolla’s wife as an assistant without problems occurring. So, UH would have to pay the new head coach and the new assistant…that will take a lot of money. Where is that money going to come from?
Kids had a gym class and a birthday party already today…and we will be having two of their friends over soon for a babysitting/playdate. So, I’ll be offline the rest of tonight. I wish I could watch the Senior Bowl!
Re: Silent recruits.
UH basketball used to have those. The guy commits, but he wants to take trips, so they keep it hush-hush.
Several years ago, a post player committed to UH. He then went to another school to visit. The second school actually kept him longer than the 48-hour period. They promised him a job once he completed his eligibility.
Hmmm.
The guy ended up still coming to UH. But he was a bust.
Ray Reed was also a silent commit for UH, for understandably other reasons.
roysan16

i sort of watched the wahinie last night.
they actually have at least 5 decent players, howeve, bolla has them split up amongst his two platoon system.
they actually move the ball better than another local bb team.
they may be the worst shooting team i have ever seen.
they may be the weakest team i have ever seen, thus, no can rebound.
they don’t recognize the shooters, therefore, they guard them so loosely they have shots all night long.
they……….okay nuff already.
I think I was the only one who watched the volleyball men on Digital 409 yesterday.
Yes, it was the BYU channel.
In Hawaiāi.
What was interesting is that the school owns the archives to all of its sports footage. The station shows classic BYU games. Yesterday’s focused on the year 1989. Of course, the UH football victory was not shown.
It would be cool if UH or K5 made available the archive of past UH games.
Soooo um, al-
What do you think of the girls BB team? Oh. Never mind.
DVDs, c’mon, there’s gotta be a market for all those old games on DVD. I’d love to see all the classics.
I’ve got the coaches’ DVDs of all of Colt’s games, but I’m not allowed to give them out. However, the A-Houses are welcome to drop by …
It’s almost Y2K on the Continental Sports Channel….
ST – so do you have DishNetwork? I didn’t know it was on yesterday. It’s definitely not on my favorites list.
d1:
SportsNight is a great show.
I just started watching the West Wing dvds, which places me a decade behind the rest of the world. Hmm. Think Google will catch on?
Jm:
Nope. I’ve got the regular Oceanic digital.
Wilton told me about the BYU channel.
But the best thing is channel 604. They show Batman, the Green Hornet, L.A. Law, Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, Lou Grant Show, etc.
Stephen,
Yes, I have Jason to thank for my SportsNight revival. I’ve got #2 son hooked on ’em now.
Veikune recovers a fumble!!!
Did I mention I’m in the Yvonne Craig (“Batgirl”) fan club?
I guess that beats a co-worker, who once joined the Tonya Harding fan club. Harding ran off with all of the money.
At least Yvonne Craig answers e-mails. Of course, she’s like 72, now.
I think I prefer Joshua Molina on SportsNight more than on West Wing. But then I prefer comedy (whoddathunk?)
d1:
The only trouble is you end up saying stuff like: “For I am, Stephen.”
And: “Draft day, baby!!!”
d1:
Did you know that Sabrina Lloyd has a tattoo on the back of her neck, which is why she’s always wearing turtle necks.
“Shoe money tonight!”
I liked Josh Molina on Sports Night too. Molina was good in season 4 of The West Wing, but I didn’t like his character in the later seasons. Anyways, I’m glad to see you guys are enjoying the DVDs, d1!
Stephen, if you ever need to borrow any West Wing DVDs, let me know. I have all seven seasons. In return, maybe I could “borrow” some DVDs from you? š
Wouldn’t that tend to limit her roles?
I liked Sabrina Lloyd on Sports Night. Hated her on NUMB3RS. Really liked Diane Farr in NUMB3RS, but now she’s gone.
I think season 4 was the last for Aaron Sorkin as a writer.
I like Emily Procter in everything.
Jason,
She just didn’t add up, huh?
….
….
….sorry š
Just read the Wiki thing on Felicity Huffman.
Didn’t know she’s married to William Macy. Gotta watch those episodes again.
Liked Macy in The Cooler.
I’m off to the mall.
I expect Jm to provide a full recap on the Senior Bowl.
gonna rest up a bit before MBB tonight.
Hope to see some of you there!
Yes, season four was Sorkin’s last. Seasons five and the first half of six were terrible. The second half of season six and all of seven was okay.
And yeah, Emily Procter is awesome. I loved her as Ainsley. I always wanted her to be a main character, but she went on to bigger and better things with CSI: Miami.
Hehe, that reminds me of the episode when John Larroquette and Rob Lowe are arguing about Gilbert and Sullivan. Because of that, I went to see The Pirates of Penzance a few years ago at the NBC Concert Hall. I loved it. See, who says TV doesn’t help with cultural advancement? š
Speaking of Larroquette, Night Court was an awesome show.

Mike,
i’d use to go to regularly to the wahine bball games. but at least back then we’d either win or think we’d have a shot to win. right now i think its a contest to see how much they can let the other team score. poor Princess having to cover those games. it must be hard to write something positive.
Garret:
Make Bolla an assistant and promote Chasity to HC or co-head coach.
There is no need to hire anyone – just moving positions.
I wouldn’t envy Charity having to look over both shoulders at Bollas.
Jim B. has always been decent to me, but I blame him for wasting a term I was waiting to use if the defense ever tightened up: Bolla constrictor D. Hmm, actually, it sounded better when it was just in my head.
By the way, SportsNight gave me two lines I’ve always wanted to use when dealing with women: “Women do not have intuition, got it? You do not have super powers. No super powers.” Also, although I’d have to reverse gender roles:
“I’m breaking up with you.”
“No.”
“What do you mean, no? I’m breaking up with you.”
“No you’re not.”
“Yes! We’re broken up.”
“No we’re not.”
Bleh, back to work…
Mike:
Can’t a head coach send an assistant(s) to the locker room?
curveball – I think they’re doing well. Jake’s name hasn’t been mentioned, so if he’s the long snapper, then he’s doing good – 4 PATs and 3 or 4 punts. Veikune recovered a fumble caused by Mauluaga (sp?).
I fell asleep at half-time and just woke up – mid 3rd. Off to do some errands. Sorry guys. Doesn’t look like it’s on again anytime soon. bbl.
Veikune just had a nice QB hurry to allow another d-lineman to get the sack.
ha, bolla constrictor D. sounds better than the amoeba.
Ouch. Two-pt conversion for the North, they ran it on a sweep left toward Veikune, who was playing RE. He had a free release, lost containment when an offensive lineman chipped him deeper in the backfield (maybe a block in the back), let the guy get outside. That’s the kind of bad play that scouts notice. Then again, many of the scouts don’t stay for the game ā it’s all about the practices to them. IDK, I like looking at both.
Just read on ESPN that former Stanford OL coach was their running game coordinator. thinking out loud but not hearing a thing, what does Stanford offensive coordinator do…coordinate the running and passing coordinators, then who game plans with all the running schemes and passing schemes, let alone, all the plays during the game…
so is scott morifuji required to tweet from every location he visits?
South (hawaii guys) team wins 35-18.
the announcers were really down on harrell and his arm strength.
they mentioned veikune once on that pass rush when he hurried the qb.
i missed the first half, so not sure how they did then.
who broke it this time…….

Garret, A-House,
Re Bolla,
What I don’t understand is how was he allowed to hire his wife as an asst coach.
What are the pros/cons with this hiring and was it advertised like other asst coaches positions?
Isn’t there a nepotism issue here? (Wonder whether union agreement allows/permits nepotism if they/coaches are covered by u/agreement?)
So now UH is paying a married couple 2 salaries for non performance of their responsibilities e.g. basic coaching, teaching and maybe win a game to two?
Wonder what did Bolla have on HF to get that extension without public disclosure until someone discovered this action(I could be wrong on this item)
I’m not a conspiracy theory type – just wondering and looking for some enlightenment.
702WN:
Jim D was the one who had the final say and he said that Mrs Bolla was the best qualified of the final 3 individuals.
I will trust his judgment, but will Mrs Bolla leave if her husband quits or is fired? Now, Jim D is faced with hiring 2 coaches.
We are looking forward to seeing you and Mrs in September for the Tsaiko-gate.
a committee selected mrs. bolla, UH search teams are political appointed idiots….there was a final team to pick from and they decided on Bolla (mrs.)
mbb and wbb seem to be out of the game before half time, always chasing, down by nearly 20 at half….auwe
A-House
Thanks for the explanation on who hired and reasoning.
Still wonder about nepotism issue at UH since in private industry – would be a no-no.
Isn’t the asst coach(s) position on a year to year renewal or is the contract term similar to the HC position? To bad UNLV didn’t take him up on his personal interest in the vacancy.
As per Garret’s post on Nevada State budgetary problems, governor proposed large reductions in education which directly affects both UNR, UNLV and community colleges faculty and students.(Also reductions with grades K-12 too) There was an organized demo by admin., faculty, parents and students on proposed cuts at UNLV. Problem is with students getting interested and involved with budget issues affecting them – no less similar to UH who will face in the very near future. Going to be a rough year – CA +9% and NV/LV +8% unemployment and increasing. Hope HI doesn’t suffer similar unemplymt rates.
Yep, can’t wait to see you and Mrs and rest of Tsai-kos for another ‘gate’.
Had lunch today at the Makino we had our pre-game lunch in 07.
Name and ownership changed to Tay-Yo, same friendly staff but food taste improved imho.
Those of you complaining about loyalty and de-commits go silent when the talk is of UH players that de-committed to other schools. If you can’t deal with de-commits, maybe you shouldn’t follow recruiting so closely.
Aulola Tonga may have given a verbal commitment to UCLA. So should UH stop recruiting him this weekend?
anyone with senior bowl statistics?
This BBall game is pathetic, it shows the lack of coaching for UH. The players for Utah State are not more skilled but they just are coached in their system much much better.
i hope none of our football recruits are at the ssc watching of mbb game…performance and attendance not a good selling point about UH even if it bb and not a fb game
i sure hope a lot of people are on the concourse at the concession stands because the half time pan of the arena is an empty arena in the upper bowl…
Hi 702WarrorNation — will you be able to attend the Friday night Get-Together on 9/18 which las vegas is working on? It wasn’t on the survey when you first responded. I believe he is looking for a suitable location at this time.

Hi SteveM
I am presently listed for 2 on your for ‘gate’ and tkts. (Boss and I)
However, I’m waiting for 2 friends who attended last UH/LV game with us to confirm they will be attending again. Also waiting to see what my family in HI along with the extended family from elsewhere planning to join or not. When I get a firmer count, I’ll send you update on the gate and tkts counts prior to end of Feb when las vegas and Rich needs count.
Ralph, here are some “Bollaisms” that really bug me I remember, hope someone else does too.
-Now that I have my recruits we can play Bolla type of “bb”, ie: ameba defense, up tempo offense.
-Bolla’s wife crying on the radio unfair to compare Bolla to Vince Goo. Only reason Vince Goo was successful is that the competition in the WCC no where near the WAC, thus the difference in success.
-Bolla’s wife crying on the radio that her husband is lacking resources and cannot be successful due to handicap of 1 asst. coach short and no admn. assistant. So now he has her as the asst. coach & think there is now an admn position = to date worst Wahine bb record in the last 15 to 20 years or so.
thanks Willie to bad the committee who selected mrs bolla didn’t dig deep for info. to many excuses….the WAC wbb is weak, no doubt, not a lot of difference than the WCC but if you look at the WCC, their teams are playing a lot better than WAC WBB teams this year…
Willie,
Losers always blame others for their own futilities.
Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount and San Diego wbb teams are doing very well, a lot better than our top WAC wbb teams…do what’s mrs. bolla’s beef….only our WAC champs getting an auto invite to the NCAA, rarely an at large team…so eat your words mrs. bolla….
in fact the Fresno coach mentioned that FSU copied Goo’s high-low offense to decimate the wahines last night
Both Bolla and Nash said they want to play up tempo bb, but I have yet to see it
quiet tonight, I hope everyone else is at Roosevelt field watching Mililani beat Kahuku for the OIA championship…3-0 final score…now for the state seeding
Hiya-
anyone staying at the Doubletree Club Las Vegas Airport for the UNLV game?
Just wondering.
RE: e-Bolla Virus
As the AD, isn’t JD able to call both Mr & Mrs Bolla on the carpet for a counseling session to review their present poor performance? Goals for them to achieve within the parameters of their contract should be discussed in detail so that they know exactly what is expected of them.
A record of this session can be kept by Jim and brought up post season. Goals that were not met or exceeded could be counted as failure to meet minimum contract standards. Asking for their resignation would save them the embarrassment of getting fired for failure to meet those standards.
K5 broadcast proof of their poor leadership is quite evident during the games. Open observation of their lack of basic coaching skills could be further proof of poor performance as a HC and Ass’t.
Would that not be grounds for their dismissal? If not, what other avenue of incompetent coaching could be examined?
Here is the visual that bothers me most during the bball broadcast…the team members yelling technical instructions from the bench at the players on the court. Credit them for carrying the team spirit with their open display of passionate enthusiasim for each other despite their lack of coaching support.
Meanwhile the coaches are sitting there looking like they were watching a boring re-run of something on the History channel. UNBELIEVABLE! and certainly UNEXCEPTABLE! Grrrr…

Kekoa,
What goals set in the contract? The standard contract doesn’t give UH any opening to fire a coach due to a poor record or players not reaching their potential. You are discussing how you would have liked for Bolla’s contract to be structured…but remember that HF did the contract and I’m sure that it is the standard contract that guarantees the money as long as extreme clauses aren’t triggered (arrests, harassment, etc.). And maybe HF left that stuff out too!
I sadly do *not* think that poor performance is any grounds to get UH to avoid having to pay Bolla his money. I don’t know any standard coaching contract that has language like you are stating…and a lot of head coaching contracts are on the web to look through via a website I posted last year. I found reading those contracts quite interesting.
The good news is that the assistants are generally on year-to-year contracts so I do not think that Mrs. Bolla has a contract after this season.
Garret ~ Seems like maybe something should be done about their performance in a closed session with the AD at the very least.
We can’t all just walk away from this as if to say “oh woe is me!” There’s gotta be a way.
Sometimes it takes a strong leader to step forward and just tell ’em to get busy. Get face to face and…Say Something Loud and Clear!
when JD sees all the red in his budget he’ll act…..bottom line is where JD is held accountable so he’ll need to start talking to his coaches….
kekoa save the uhu head, when bighilo comes over for the KK, both of you pay a visit to JD with your uhu soup and talk story…UH is our only signature school in the state, athletics play a big part of state pride, and we need UH to be winners-time for a change…follow obama’s lead-we can change
Ralph ~ That’s what I’m hoping will get his attention. Get some serious dialogue going. Can’t stand around waiting for things to happen. You gotta make it happen!
Right Big Hilo? I know you got your e-bolla virus detector working over-time.

I went to a basketball game tonite, Keaau v Honokaa.
MTUME MSKIZI JACKSON is a player. the fastest on the basketball court I ever saw. honest. slightly taller than me, and i’m legit 6’2″. solid solid kid. played football WR last year but broke his wrist, something like that. just a natural athlete. maybe 190 lbs. SUPER FAST. a straight A student. His father died 2 years ago. mother lives in the back bushes. super great kid.
come monday morning, I’m calling a coach and telling them about Mr. Jackson. he is the fastest in the 100m on the island is what I’m told. tonight he made me a believer. never mind basketball. i’m thinking db or safety. the guy can cover ground really really fast. and his motor keeps running. honest to goodness.

The above video sits prominately, right smack in the middle of today’s New York Times sport’s section. After watching the six minute video twice it’s easy to see how the actions of a few can diminish the good image of Hawaii. With favorable public opinion and sentiment conducive to tourists traveling to Hawaii, especially to sightsee and drive around the island and maybe visit the North Shore-a video like this, does no justice. And it doesn’t help at all in bridging the gap of how the mainlanders perceive the prejudgices in Hawaii. It’s just like myself-would I go to Las Vegas if there were gang wars and members carrying guns. No. Period. In the video, there’s fighting and the narrator says victims have to arm themselves with guns to protect themselves-hardly a place that a tourist would want to visit, in my opinion.

I just wanted to say one thing about tonight’s basketball game (turn away if you haven’t watched it yet):
I have never, ever seen a more poorly officiated game in my life. Moving screens, pinning players’ arms, stuff like that. And it continued throughout the game, and the refs were terribly inconsistent at calling fouls.
In the first 6:55 of the game, Utah State was called for five fouls to UH’s none, but there were numerous non-calls throughout that period as well. USU was being the aggressor, and they were being too aggressive, IMO. Then we have to wait another 6:07 until another foul is called on USU.
And in the second half, USU continued with its fouling tendency in the first 6:35 with five fouls to UH’s one, but then there was a period of 8:32 where UH got called for seven fouls to none for Utah State. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but there’s something wrong with that there.
I give credit to Utah State, cause they are a good team, but the referees certainly did not help. In the end, considering the terrible officiating, the lack of energy (I don’t think anybody had their legs after all that traveling), and Utah State’s physical superiority, I thought the ‘Bows still put on a good effort. But mainly, I wanted to vent about the refs. I thought that was absolutely ludicrous.
Roysan ~ My grandson tells me there are certain ‘locals’ who think it is their duty to guard the waves out there and keep the ‘others’ out. Generally speaking they seem to make themselves look silly out there when everyone ignores them.
jm2222 ~ Is the prisoner allowed to have anything besides bread and water?…oh wait! wuz lights out at 9 PM! To bed with no groceries!
jm2222 ~ Check out a movie called the Express on pay-per-view. Bio of Ernie Davis. Great story about an incredible RB.
The coaching is straight out of BHF2’s portfolio of how to motivate peeps.
roysan16- They are still doing that cr@p?

The surprise visitor taking a trip to UW this weekend is Stan Hasiak, a highly-touted OT from Hawaii.
Hasiak is listed as a soft commit to Cal, where he was being recruited by Jim Michalczik, now the new offensive coordinator at Washington.
Also visiting:
DE Iuta Tepa (Polytechnic HS) Long Beach, CA
DE Kimo Makaula (Punahou School) Honolulu
DT Semisi Tokolahi (Hilo HS) Hilo, HI
Makaula and Tokolahi have already commited.
Tepa visiting UCLA next weekend.
Stan Hasiak visiting is a surprise-where even some of the jeolous UCLA posters refer to Stan H, as free trip Stan…(or is he seriously looking at UW).

Nitey Night and Sweet Committed Warrior Dreams!
Roysan,
I have friends in both the Hui and Wolfpack
Here is a summary in short.
If it weren’t for them the local beach goers, like me, would not be able to surf the North Shore because visiting pro’s and wannabees would be dropping in and acting all Tantaran. They would be having unsanctioned/self run contest at the best spots every weekend. They would tell all their friends to come to Hawaii and no worry about the easy going local. These travelling guys after a few years would start acting like they own the place and tell the locals to “Beat It… This is MY SPOT”.
The Hui and Wolfpack reminds the guys to Malama Aina (take care of the Land), Malama I Ke Kai (take care of the Ocean), and Ho’ihi (respecting others with dignity).
Oh and BTW, the part about the guns????
Uhhhhh, Peter Townend (P.T.) was referring to his days in the early 70’s
BTW2:
About The Blond guy getting KO’d:
1) He was a pro surfer who knew where was a bodyboard contest going on at Pipeline, but still insisted on surfing in the designated restricted area
2) He refused the demands by the C&C lifeguards to leave
3) He refused the demands by the contest water patrol on Jet Ski
4) He refused the demands of Kainoa McGee (pro body boarder) who paddled out to get the guy to leave
5) Finally when he got to shore, what else, he get’s CRACKS!!! 3 strikes and he’s out
Reminds me of the football fans who comes to Aloha Stadium, get’s all drunk, cusses out and puts down the local people sitting around them, does stupid stuff, then get’s cracks. Then goes home, crys to their local news media on how Hawaii if full of thugs…
New York Times…
Pfffff… Give me a break….
Liz,
I’m glad you mentioned Titus Kinimaka. He and brother Alekai are great Hawaiian Braddahs who kept Kauai the “Secret” place to surf during the 70’s and 80’s. Locals owe a lot to them and others who helped to keep Kauai’s beaches and surfspots some of the best in the world.
watching a dvr tape of Kansas vs K-State, wbb, 6K in attendance and a game in which K-State won…K-State has a small lineup but they lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing less than 50 points per game…their game is amoeba defense, help defense, and lots of rotation and movement, and more importantly everyone goes for loose balls and rebounds..good coaching, bolla is no coaching-P.E. basketball…
Ferd wrote a excellent column on mbb this morning….definitely a dilemma for JD but losing sucks and with attendance in the 4K category he has to make the tough call. a mediocre program without WAC championships will not bring out the fans, and mbb has to contribute with fb to carry the financial burden of the Warriors. only a well played game and winning will bring out more fans….
new season tickets for fb on sale feb 4….good to see the UH starting early again this year to secure new season ticket purchases…
Mililani girls won the OIA championship last night beating Kahuku 3-0..Boys up next playing this week….Rob Kalani didn’t make it….Jason, Moanalua were East champs and they didn’t make it to the States, lost 2 in a row in the OIA championship playoffs….
A peaceful Sunday morning to everyone!
Time for breakfast.
Soft boiled eggs and toast. Mmmmm.
Ralph . . .
You were up late.
LizK . . .
Good to see you found a place for the UNLV game!
Big Wave & Roysan ~
There is still an element out there that doesn’t have anything better to do than to cause trouble. They are the young punks today that ‘think’ they are doing right by chasing the tourists away from the lineup at any of the popular surfspots around the island.
These are the insects that my grandson is referring to. These are those same idiots at Aloha stadium that pour beer on the visiting fans and ‘ack up whenever they’ve maxed their limit. These are the guilty ones that grab the headlines and give us a bad rap.
So what do we do about it?…obviously Wolf Pack and others have found ways to educate people who had that greedy look in their eyes. Individuals like Frank & Raynel Foster who live and operate their farm right across the street from Sunset have always had to deal with the air head people who continue to come to ‘conquer’ Sunset.
In the late fifties & early sixties me and pops helped Raynel’s dad and brothers grub the land that is now “Smokie Acres” farm. When work was done for the day, we all either surfed, or would ‘poke’ fish in the area depending on the wave conditions.
Frank was already a significant part of the watermen who grew up in the area. He taught us how to recognize the tremendous currents that ran thru the area and what to expect if you lost your board, or worse. He would be the first to tell you to respect Sunset or fall victim to her.
Today, you might spot us on the top deck of his house enjoying the view on the big wave days. Telling tall tales of how we use to do “dis ‘n dat” out there and how we nearly lost it all chancin’ em. Now it’s the grandkids out there, and no matter what we say, we know a significant part of their education will be taught by the ocean. Sunset is relentless.
Hiya wafan! Had to clear the air bubbles out of my brain this morning. My glory days of surfing were cut short by Pops assignment to Europe. The upside to that was learning how to ski. Found it to be easier to traverse a mountain trail for a much longer ride down the hill. The ride up the hill on a lift chair beat the hell out of paddling back out to the lineup.
Kekoa . . .
Skiing is fine but the wahines wear their bikinis only a few weeks a year at Spring Skiing. Besides, after a long winter some of them look like they are wearing their white long underwear. Kind of like being snow-blind. HA!
I would rather be on a warm and sunny beach instead.
Have to exercise my eyes every so often!
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Good morning Tsaikos everywhere!

I wit you guyz 808%. I’m thinking get guyz came here early 80s, went school here, you’d think by now peeps like that would know the idea of respecting your neighbors. So he gets in a fist fight with one neighbor, gets in a verbal fight with another neighbor, builds his house add on in the setback next to the street, gets called on it and then writes a 3 page letter to County Planning and complaining about 12 neighbors who he claims have setback problems too. never went to any of the neighbors, get the facts, just ran off his mouth.
Get those kind people all over the world. Some are locals, some are wannabe locals, and some are just plain idiots and don’t give a hoot about the team effort, just thinking of themselves.
Thats Bolla for you!
I have a feeling Bolla is not liked here.
Which is liked least: HF or Bolla?
Reading about Manti’s final 3. decisions decisions. i would make a suggestion, but the kid is on his own. i do not think daniel will influence him one way or the other. and those coaches, they can’t get on the field. all they can do is motivate. and coach.
bwahhaaahaaahhaa
Wafan,
awww shucks, i was just trying to motivate Jimmy D. I know he’s got a hard job. Coach Mack’s got a hard job. They both gotta face the bullet, their known weaknesses. they know it, and the longer it goes on, the more we know it. so to them both i say, be a coach, be a player! You either got it or you don’t. I was reminded of that all too well yesterday; last nite at the basketball game, yesterday morning on the water.
if you’re a player, you gotta work really hard at your craft. work, rest, work, rest. its like that in the jungle of life. š
bhf2 . . .
I understand. If they do not meet the expectations then they should either be removed or fired. That would be a reasonable expectation for any employee (Bolla) and employer (JD).
Sometimes, though, the employee has to be motivated to do the right thing by the employer. It might be difficult because of legal issues. But, then you would be able to address that much more readily than I.
We have to believe JD is working behind the scenes to have a win-win situation for all.
Still, it is sometimes amusing to take a whack at them once in a while. First Amendment!!!
Jimmy D probably is in a legal bind. Terminating Bolla probably would come at a high cost, $ UH does not have. So I got a suggestion if the guy won’t go. Leave him in the woman’s program, but strip him of his asst coaches, save $$. He’s sacrificing his young ladies’ futures, but mostly he’s sacrificing their team spirit. I say the best we can do is to let him stay, but without his wife to aid and abet him. Let him have a HF like legacy at UH. he’s developing it right now.
he might be a great guy at home, a wonderful husband and all that, but he sure as heck is presenting a very ugly visual for UH WBB. it didn’t have to get this bad; its all on him. and this bad vibe just cascades over into other programs too. jmo.
BigWave 96744- thanks for the 411.
Reminds me of Anahola back in the day.
It used to be a beautiful place to go camping and very mellow for da small keiki to get “oceanized”. Then it got scary and trashy and I didn’t go back for 20 years.
Then some of the residents took back the beach. Kinda rough at first but they put community pride back into the place and made it safe and beautiful again.
I haven’t been back for another 10 years (since da small keiki got big). Hope it is still nice.
Oops.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
Thanks, wafan… it was bugging me so I made the UNLV arrangements. Staying close to the airport for free wifi and my ridiculous 6:30am Sunday departure back to Kauai.
Congrats to David Veikune for his fumble recovery at the Senior Bowl. And Jake- saw you in the action too!
Good morning catwoman! Meow!
How’s errbody doing today?
No Lie Liz!…You jez like be by da airport to yell, “Da Plane – Da Plane!”
All this talk about beaches this AM. We kona be out at a Makaha beach house today to enjoy 5f’s.
Anahola was looking pretty nice last summer when we were there visiting some friends who have lived there forever. There was a time when the best Limo Kohu could be picked there fairly close to shore. Now, you have to wait for super low tides and then go way out. Plus the reefs are so fragile from people who don’t care where they step…auwe!
Top of the mornin’ to you DPK! It’s Sunday, are you Catlick?
Kekoa,
JD will do a review of every coach after their season is over…so he will go over the women’s basketball season and meet privately with Bolla to let him know what he thought of his performance. So, the private meeting you are hoping JD to have will occur as a natural part of JD’s duties as AD. The worse things get, the more difficult that meeting will be for Bolla.
Bolla can also be informed that his contract will not be renewed/extended after it is over unless things improve significantly (giving milestones or benchmarks like you proposed). That would be an incentive for any coach to look around for other opportunities. I’m sure that Bolla knows that the writing is on the wall anyway with the win/loss record and the attendance figures.
Ok…gotta go pack da cooler with adult beverages and load up the car with rations for the day.
Enjoy every bit of your day folks…more nasty wet weather ‘n wind is forecasted for Monday.
bbl…
bighilofan2,
I agree with what you are saying now…except, I wouldn’t get rid of both assistant coaches, just the most recently hired one (his wife). The other assistant is a candidate for interim coach if needed, and demonstrated that she could get the wahine to play well for her when she took over for a stretch the other season.
That would be a perfectly legal way to save money, and UH definitely needs to save money. I’m assuming that all of the assistant coach contracts are year-to-year, so JD doesn’t need to fire anyone…just not renew the contract.
Garret!…that’s the best we can hope for in this instance. I’m just frustrated that people like Bolla and Frazier are out there. I’m sure JD will prevail and make the UH program much more secure for the future.
Have a good family Sunday!
Big Hilo has ‘da plan?’ Bradda you was laffin’ an watchin’ me gnash my teeth – getting all worked up…while you had da ansah aurready!
Sheesh! Go paddle your canoe up da creek wit one teaspoon! I going Makaha!
U-Dub had their football recruits attend yesterday’s basketball game, and Sarkisian had some strong words when he spoke to the crowd. I’m sure that his words were chosen with an eye towards the recruits…which included Makaula, Tepa, and some others that are either from Hawaii or are current/former UH recruiting targets.
Kekoa,
I agree with your post at #237. At least there isn’t much longer left on the contract…and in the final year of his contract UH can always elevate an assistant coach to interim head coach during the season without paying that assistant any extra money. That is why it is important to have an assistant on staff that can take over for a stretch…and UH already has someone that fits that description.
I hope that you have a great day today also with your family. We already had a breakfast buffet at Souplantation with our friends. A great way to start the day!
Fans are contacting recruits via their Facebook pages…which is an NCAA recruiting violation and a major headache for the NCAA and schools to try to police.
This part of the article explains why it would have been an NCAA violation to have the chat with Corey Nielsen.
Here is Mike’s article about Bolla’s contract extension. Next season will be the 2009-2010 season, and the season after that will be the final season on his contract.
Good Morning Tsaikos!!
It’s unfortunate that all the teams competing right now are struggling. The enthusiasm for UH athletics is down. I hope it doesn’t affect the ticket sales for football.
Sometimes I wish Aloha Stadium had it’s own version of Oaklands “BLACK HOLE” fan section.
If they wanna lie to the world about Hawaii fans we should give them a reason to tell the truth.
I say we reach out to Halawa inmates and have a section open to them for all home games against Fresno State RIGHT INSIDE the visitors section. They’d still be in their Halawa jumpsuits. I’d give them free beer for all four quarters.
But to be safe, I’d fence in that section and close it off from the rest of Aloha Stadium.
FSU people wanna complain, we’ll give them a reason!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mornin’ peeps,
Savala to USF is what is being said.
Re: Conduct of fans, etc. at games.
IDK, everyone says that we have to show class, etc., but look at the BIG TIME programs, they have fans that are vile, rude, and just out right classless (In the stadium, out of the stadium, on the Internet, in person)…BUT in Hawai`i we gotta be nice nice all the time. Give me a break….remember folks, its a BIZNESS, not church. When the game is over, then yeah, we can be all nice and show ALOHA…otherwise, its a free country and I will do what it takes to make sure the OPPONENTS know who I am backing.
Also, there are people that say we should not slam recruits that “Trip” us or after they give a Verbal commitment to us and then commit to other colleges. You know what? I think that they deserve to get blasted by the fans and that they better get used to it. So they are still young? I don’t care, nowadays you got kids and I repeat KIDS acting like adults. Killing people with guns, having sex PRE-TEEN, etc. And you still want me to cuddle them? Please….they want to act like grown-ups, well I’m going to treat them like one.
One last thing. e-Bolla virus HAS TO GO. Think about this. If you owned a private company and had an employee that just down-right sucked, caused your PAYING customers to stop patronizing you, made other workers (In this case, players) not want to do their best…basically dragging your company down the drain….would you keep him on the payroll of find a way to replace him at all costs?
The Bolla thing has been going on for years–but the sugar coaters protected his butt saying give him time and turned to heckling cynics and calling them negative haters and not “true” fans…LOL..sounds familiar throughout UHAD, eh, long live mediocrity and a very miopic fanbase…u got what u asked 4…and what u support!
