Done deal
Norm Chow has signed his contract, and is officially the Warriors’ head coach.
He will be introduced during a news conference tomorrow.
Chow then leaves Friday for California for family obligations, then reports back to the Utes. He received permission to coach the Utes in the Dec. 31 Sun Bowl. There is no timetable for assembling a staff; he agreed to interview member of the current UH staff.
Chow signed a five-year deal worth $550,000 annually in base salary — half of what Greg McMackin earned each year. There are incentives that can boost the pay.

C’mon, you knew this was going to happen:
It would be a good idea if the RainBowTique created similar shirts.
It would be even better if UH started selling season tickets this week.
* * * * * *
Because of what is being termed unresolved “issues,” cornerback Justin “J.T.” Turner and defensive tackle Sione Lavaka did not sign letters of intent this morning.
Oh boy
What exactly is the hold up with the assistant coaches salaries?
OMG…cute, but let’s get the guy officially on board, first!
Good morning Tsaikos…
ST, agree with the season ticket point. Strike while the iron’s hot, and in time for Christmas presents too. Why does UH shoot themselves in the foot like that? Love the headline, by the way!
I couldn’t sleep so I figured I would read the blogs on Norm Chow and I’m in the top 10, yeaaaa…I wondered if we are not using the run and shoot system what will happen to all of the recruits…will they leave?
I don’t see why UH can’t process season tickets starting like tomorrow. You have a list of seats that are available. Take the orders by hand on a piece of paper if need be.
Even picking up a hundred extra season ticket holders would be nice.
OC Warrior – in response to your post yesterday – yes, I remember the dominant BYU days. You’re absolutely right – there was never any rebuilding to that offense. Players came up through the system and you plugged and played them as they matriculated. Like you, I also couldn’t understand why UCLA switched, especially when Rick Neuheisel had a West Coast guy at the helm. Ain’t nothing like pure ego, I guess. Back to UH, in all honesty, I’m excited to see Chow’s version of the WC. Getting rid of the ball QUICK like a Brady or Rodgers and having a more balanced offense (read MORE balanced, not balanced) — man, if our boys can nail that system, now that will be a thing of beauty.
Top 10
I’m sure the QB clubs and Booster orgs are going to be reporting on what Coach Chow will run, but not sure if they can report until he sees what he’s got and tells them. Run-n-shoot? If we don’t know what it is by now, then go home. However, West Coast, Pistol, etc all mean different things to different coaches and sports writers. Let’s have patience my friends. For me, I will be most happy if the team goes for FAST, LARGE Defenders first, while they are trying to plug in our players to whatever offense Coach likes.
Hey BTW, how is everyone doing on the 2011 DPK Diet??? Who’s the “Biggest Loser”???
top twenty
Auwe. Made a list of possible candidates in early November in case there was a need for a new head coach. Notice one name missing from the list, is the one who got the job. Shame on me.

Morning, everyone!
“It’s a beautiful morning…”
Not really, it’s raining, and will probably rain all day, but oh well. Still good.
I think most of us will agree we’d like to see UH push more, lots more, in the way of marketing. We always lose opportunities like this. Gotta be more aggressive in pitching the school to the public, let alone the mainland!
Nice list, Pride.! It is funny that the one you left out is the one who got in.
Good morning Tsaikos!!
I will not be comfortable until negotiations are completed. In 2002, Kentucky offered Chow the head coaching position. They were in negotiations and he pulled out when they couldn’t come to an agreement on the pay for the assistants and ended back at USC. We all know Hawaii doesn’t have the most money to offer and am concerned this might be a stumbling block. Chow can’t do it himself and wants to be surrounded with coaches he has confidence in. He knows what it will take to get those coaches to Hawaii. I just hope that UH gives him the tools he needs to be successful, if not, it could be 2002 all over again and a HUGE embarrassment.
And I do agree that it takes time for new guys to come in and learn the RnS. It’s tougher when a whole group of key personnel leaves at the same time, and we have to experience the ol’ valleys over and over.
Should be more continuity and consistency by having a less complicated offense to learn, where we should be reloading more frequently, as opposed to always rebuilding.
We’ve got some great, young QB’s, Receivers, and RB’s already. I’d imagine most have been around more “normal” offenses than the RnS in their short past, so I’m hoping they’ll pick up whatever offense Coach Chow implements quicker.
As long as we get back to basic fundamentals on defense too.
Excited about our future. I know I’m rushing it, but I can’t wait for next season to kick off already!
Go, Warriors!!!
Interesting, Stretch. I hadn’t read that. All I’d read was that he wasn’t interested in the Kentucky gig, and was happy with USC and going after a National Championship.
C’mon, people. Let’s get this contract stuff finalized!!! Time’s-a-wastin’!
WW – On the afternoon radio show yesterday, they had a guy from a Salt Lake City radio station talking about the reaction of Utah people. He was the one that mentioned the reason why Chow turned down Kentucky and went back to USC. Of course it may not be accurate, but it’s something that concerns me. Just waiting for word that the deal is signed and UH calls the press conference.
Oh crepe! Well, I hope we can work out the details quick. Don’t need this to drag on and lead to a change of heart. I swear, there was nothing in the article I’d read that said he was even in negotiations. Just said he wasn’t interested, especially since USC was rolling and going after another NC.
Guess I’ll play with google later when I’ve got some free time.
Great Morning All!
Stretch is right; not a done deal yet.
What mechanisms are in place for Joe and Betty Lunchbucket-type fans to step up immediately and show $$$upport for UHAD? Call Na Koa? AKA?
I believe Stephen mentioned that the school offices are closed this week. Does that mean that no one is there to answer a call for someone to donate to the cause?
Others have mentioned opening up season ticket sales. How about renewals?
It would be terrible if all everyone was able to do was sit back and watch the whole thing fizzle out like a firecracker with a wet fuse….
C’mon UH – wiki wiki!
How would the current Warrior QB’s stack up in Coach Chow’s style offense if that is the route he chooses?
@Pride – Nice list. Don’t spock JJ though. He’ll be back.
I’d just like to see Rolo and Tuioti stay. We’ll just have to see how the assistant coaches shake out.
Good Morning, Tsaikos!
Happy to hear about Norm Chow as the next Warrior head coach.
As for marketing season tickets, it seems UH is sometimes asleep at the wheel. At WVB Regionals, we got there at 5:00 pm (start of firs game). Went immediately to Rainbowtique for a Regional Tshirt.
They were already out of programs. They had sold all 100 that was available. They said they were expecting more before the start of the second game (UH vs USC). I don’t know if they ever arrived.
Only 100 programs for a sold out arena! What happened! Plus there were no freebie programs. Watched both games without having the info on the players.
I’m ready to renew my football tickets. Let’s hope UH is on the ball.
this is UH we talking about here…they move so slow, i would be super surprised if they start renewal of season tickets this early. Its a great idea, im all ready to renew mine, but in many cases, i think the public has better ideas than the guys running the place.
Gmorning Gang!
Chow or No Chow, I’ll still support the team and program.
It’s not done til it’s done.
Aloha Kakahiaka!
ButiGroove?
Oh yeah… the Buck Foise folks?
I would get excited about a Harbaugh coming to coach the Warriors….
Good Morning Tsaikos!
As Ralph mentioned last night, disappointing loss by the Wahine basketball team. Too many turnovers (19), poor free throw shooting (10-22), and a lack of intensity.
However, I think Coach DTD has the ladies headed in the right direction. They’ll surprise the WAC! Nice to see Vicky, Kalei, and Kanisha in at the same time.
But hey, what do I know!
I think one of the problems is the State Fiscal Year ends in June, so if they sell tickets for next year, it goes into this FY’s accounts, and then revenue for next year’s goes down. Also if the UH holds the money in one of their accounts, the Legislature threatens to take it back at the end of the year cuz they didn’t spend all their allocations…. You guys always blame the UHAD, but I blame the accountants…
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Cautious optimism is the order of the day until “t”s are crossed and “i”s are dotted. Stretch and others are right.
Assuming the contract gets done and Coach gets the right assistants, it will be interesting to see where the Warriors stand a year from now. Tremendous excitement and great possibilities at this stage of the game.
It’s the Chow Show now!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Hopefully they do offer a special on new season tickets…I got mine during Mack’s hiring press conference. But as ST and others mentioned, it’s Christmas Week, not January 6 or whatever the date was back in 2008 when UH offices were open.
The only viable option would be Jack Harbaugh.
Big Wave, #10 –
Can’t speak for others, but I was down 30 pounds at one point. Then Thanksgiving happened, and I’ve still got the “bump” to prove it. 😆

Looks like the deal has been made and an announcement is coming!
BOOM!
http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/UH_and_Chow_agree_on_contract_terms.html?id=136005253
Got Chow now. Got assistants?
Nice….so will Coach Chow be here in person? Is he on a flight already? Hope the Ticket Office is ready. If anything, would it be too much of a cluster to sell them at the HAL Diamond Head Classic this week?
BOOM!
http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/UH_and_Chow_agree_on_contract_terms.html?id=136005253
The news is good! Got Chow now. Got assistants?
Negotiations pau. When can I renew my season tickets? 🙂
i appreciate your efforts to make people well rounded! great post! thanks
Bringing in quality assistants will be crucial in turn the program around. At the same time, UH fans need to be patient and not expect the world these next 2 seasons. He’ll need time to implement his schemes and bring in the players that fit the system.
Welcome, Coach Chow! Exciting times, indeed.
Good news on Chow. He was making $257k/yr at Utah. Give him $500k for the first year and UH would be in no worse financial shape than if Mac stayed. Then, increase his salary annually for the balance of his contract.
Have a great day everyone!
Very good to see that the assistant salaries will be up. Hopefully UH got close to or met Chow’s expectations as to what he wants his assistants to be paid for.
More importantly, hopefully UH will foot the bill on that increase as it shouldn’t fall into the expecations of boosters. Keep pushing that and lord knows they might start boosters to foot the bill on schollies as well.
ok..new question for everyone……who should be on the staff?
I say gotta keep Cal Lee, Tuioti, Miano, and Rolo. Lee, Tuioti and Miano to keep the local connection for recruits. I like the coaching by Tuioti, he is a upbeat, nuts kinda coach on the sidelines which is what the kids need. Rolo has a lot of potential to be something great later in his career, i would love to see Chow mentor Rolo and create an offensive scheme that is tough to stop. I would love to see Coach Cav come back to Hawaii to work with our line and i would like to see some former players or people with ties to the islands such as Mark Atuaia get a look for the new staff.
This is the best web blog I have read.
Wow….just read that former UH assistant Tom Williams, just resigned as head coach at Yale. Apparently, he put false information on his resume.
Keep Tuioti as he’s and young up and comer. I don’t see Rolo being retained as an OC, maybe quarterbacks coach – he could learn a lot from Coach Chow if he does take him under his wing. Bring in new assistants for the other positions. They understand the nature of the business – New head coaches want to bring in their own hires. How many coaches did June Jones retain in 99 — none.
I think the new HC is deserving of a tshirt that DOESN’T look like an ad for a plate lunch wagon.
That shirt and these Chow-this and Chow-that puns suck.
Otto, #31
Not correct, accountants have tricks to record the revenue next FY.
Not correct, they don’t threaten to take money back from athletics because they have no surplus to take back.
I’m glad that negotiations with Coach Chow are done, no need to worry about problems with that now. Hopefully the budget for the assistants is increased, since strong assistants are a huge asset to any head coach.
That’s too bad about Yale HC Tom Williams (former UH assistant/DC under Fred von Appen). Gotta be careful what you put on your resume. George O’Leary found out the hard way.
Yale has 2 former UH assistants on staff in Doug Semones and Ikaika Malloe.
Warrior player Drew Loftus was arrested last night.
http://www.thenewstribune.com/2011/12/21/1953793/former-tri-city-football-star.html
54. Doesn’t matter though because he left the team this semester.
Its about time UH raised the base pay of the assistant coaches. Too many head coaches have suffered because of this. I hope Chow can get the assistants that he wants.
49. Kevin
totally agree – it was old before i saw the first one
What was the total package for the assistants before Chow’s hiring? Happy they got an increase. Now maybe some of the mainland coaches who said they’re not leaving will their current job will change their mind.
It would be a good idea if the RainBowTique created similar shirts.
It would be even better if UH started selling season tickets this week.
It would be an even better idea if Chow started putting a staff together and focus on recruiting now instead of waiting until after the bowl game.
Nice! 🙂
Lava…..no worries. Chow’s already got most of the staff in place. The final piece was the assistant salaries, which must be good….as they have settled on a contract. Now, he can finalize.
A million dollars don’t seem like a lot of money to be spread amongst 9 asst. coaches.

A donation to the Na Koa Endowment would be a great way to get $$ into the program on a continuing basis as well as receive a year end tax benefit.
PolyMom
I will be on the phone to Panda Travel to see where most of the fans will be booked in LAX & SAN. It seems to make sense to make the receptions as close to the fan base as possible.
Scott Kaulukukui better call me before the bus engine starts up.
Greetings Warrior Nation,
It’s too bad that former UH/NFL lineman, Adrian Klemm, is slated to coach the OL under Jim Mora at UCLA. According to Rivals.com he is ranked as the top non-BCS recruiter in the nation. He knew how to grab young players from the L.A. area. I’m hoping that Chow’s regime will focus on the enormous talent pool in SoCal. Although most top guys end up at major FBS programs there are still many diamonds in the rough; think Cody Fajardo (QB) at Nevada.
I hope he keeps Rolo, Miano and Tuioti. It would be a big mistake to clean house. Not only are these men are talented but they are a major asset to the program.
Im a little conflicted with Chow deciding to stay on with Utah for their bowl game, BUT I and many others FLAMED “whatshisface” at Notre Dame for ditching Cincinnati before their bowl game.. Their BCS BOWL GAME with Florida back then.
I thought it was a classless move.. So, with that being said, I respect Chow for deciding to finish his obligations with Utah.
ppj2,
I unnastan…..publik skoo!
chow’s comment on tv that he would like to coach utah in the bowl game is ludicrous – if he is really serious, he would have stated that he would resign from utah immediately and focus on the UH job. bad, bad comment. donavan you got a senior citizen who is coming home to retire while drawing a salary of about $600,000 or so.
😉 😆
Tom Mui
I called in my 2012 Na Koa donation for the endowment to UHF yesterday. I remember a past blog where you asked everyone to step up and I didn’t want to be left behind (no exclamation point in deference to other readers).
Thanks Don Wee-ah! 🙂
George Lumpkin was, for many years, the UH point man for So Cal recruiting, being from LA, playing JUCO ball (LA Harbor JC) there before coming to UH as a player in the early 70s. California is an important recruiting base for UH, but I’d like to see them expand more into the Pac NW, Texas, the Midwest, Canada. UH had a lot of success under Bob Wagner recruiting players from a broader geographical area (Ohio, Georgia, Canada, Texas, Utah).
This is great news with Coach Chow taking the helm, and we have to remember, it’s his ship, it’s his call, and it’s his ar$e on the line…with that said…
GO WARRIORS
GO WARRIORS
GO WARRIORS
lava,
i agree, have the ticket office ready to sell season tickets right after, strike that, during the press conference. offer packages/discounts as incentives…i don’t know….beef up the corporate sponsors……strike while the iron is hot as they say.
GO WARRIORS
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
How about a tee-shirt “CHINESE PRIDE”?
Actually those bad puns (“Chow Fun”, “Chow Line” etc.) are marketable
items. The various “Buck FSU” and its variations were in bad taste as far as I was concern and yet it did raise a sort of spirit – a rah rah rah -for our Warrior football team.
Nothing is wrong with raising the consciousness of a new dawn for UH football.
d1shima, I was asking before they hired Chow. Before……..before……. BEFORE………… gunfunnit.:)
tommui,
T-shirt: “GOT CHOW?”
(although I have no idea how that would translate into Chinese. *gulp*)
First stop for Coach Chow when he lands here – Young’s Fish Market. No forget he’s part-Hawaiian and Portuguese.
Concerning the who was Jim Donovan first backing for HC controversy. This is my take on the matter. The secret power group within the University of Hawaii determined early they wanted the authority to select the HC but gave JD the responsibility of presenting that selection to the University President. (in other words, he had no choice) Yup, we have all seen that movie before. Responsibility but no authority. These types of events occur when there is no transparency in the process where small groups of people can take advantage of the situation. This is a public university, while the choice of head coach was a correct one this time, to avoid a loss in public confidence let’s make clear what the hiring process is for head coaches since this is a requirement for all state jobs in the first place.
OK, ppj2. 😀
Chow is a doctor. Come to think of it, Larry Price is a doctor too. Let’s hope Chow has a lot of school spirit, personal pride!!!! Ha, ha, ha.
I’m not really ready to do the anointing oil, yet. Let’s see what he does in our recruiting class, selecting his staff, and spring ball first. We need OL, DL, and, heck we need a lot of things, including an accurate strong kicker. I also hope Chow can land John Ursua,WR from Utah. Good Will Hunting!
#66
Chow made that statement before he signed the contract. He really couldn’t say much else at the time. At this point though there needs to be decisions made on recruiting. A list needs to be made and priorities need to be set. There is no time to lose. With Christmas break I don’t see how those decisions can be made without input from the former staff. Let’s get on this thing pronto.
Tom Mui,
Generational differences I guess….
The Buck Foise shirts are harmless compared to the F— Hawaii shirts little kids were wearing in Fresno where they didn’t even censor or make an attempt to humour/hide the cuss portion of the phrase.
RE: “Chow” name puns.
The use of Chow Time and all this just doesn’t seem clever or creative to me, or appealing at all.
I would have played off of his first name to be honest with you. You know how people say something is not the norm? Well, considering we got a new coach that is technically an outside hire not from the staff, this is NOT the NORM.
Or something to that effect.
“Chow This” and Chow That” just comes off as lazy as it was the easiest pun to sell.
It would be worth a visit to the Punahou campus to gauge the interest of that kicker who has verbaled to UCLA. Worth a try at least.
Now that’s what I wanted to wake up to…fireplace lit up, Christmas tree glimmering, kahlua cream in my coffee, eggs and vienna sausage breakfast…AND COACH CHOW AGREED TO BECOME OUR COACH!!
RETURN THAT IPAD BABY…I GOT MY CHRISTMAS GIFT EARLY THIS YEAR!!!
It’s a recruiting dead period right now isn’t it…what’s the harm in him coaching the last game? I’m sure he’s still making contact with potential staff
So happy to read that the negotiations have ended…Waiting for that white piece of paper to be signed so I can really start celebrating.
Raising the salaries of assistant coaches is a smart move by UH. I didn’t expect UH to do so amid its issues with the budget.
Vienna Sausage Breakfast? Not even Portuguese sausage? AUWE!!!!
According to Bobby Curran, Miano would love to work for Chow. If not, he doesn’t think he will pursue any coaching opportunities away.
I would hope that now a visit to Punahou would be a rote activity!
And a whole lotta other high schools.
#82, ???
IWWTHM,
Hold on now, let’s see if UH will be the ones footing the full bill for the assistant salary increase.
Like I said before, I cannot agree with boosters being expected to foot the bill. If individuals or a group of like minded individuals as boosters do it, then fine, but collectively, I would personally hate to see Na Koa pay it out or even part of it.
Like I said before… next thing you know, they’ll be asking boosters to pay for schollies. 🙄
Kevin –
You don’t like Chow Fun pun for a Pun named Chow? Sorry, no pun intended… or was it? 😆
I cannot agree with Innocent Observer (#66) more. Chow hasn’t acted as though he is either excited or ready to become the HC for Hawaii. He is still apologizing to his players and staff at Utah for leaving them, but not after the Sun Bowl. Hawaii can wait. He should be here to lead the recruiting. Its not a good start.
DPK = punny guy
I’m sure that Coach Chow will has a very good relationship with the people at Kahuku HS, given his history with recruiting players from there for BYU.
Just realized that UH will have to hire a tight ends coach. Been some 20 plus years since UH ran a TE.
I prefer chow mein over chow fun noodles.
Has anyone heard anything from UH about the Norm Chow hire?? Do you think they are NOT excited to have him on board?? The parties involved are really careful in what they say until everything is signed. IF the deal fell through but Chow said he wanted to leave, then what would his standing be with Utah?? I bet JJ is having some backlash for “leaving” for ASU, then coming back.
d1 –
My pilipino priends peel the same way.
#88, maybe as the recruiting coordinator? He seems to have plenty of energy. Take care of the local boys while Chow and his staff does the mainland guys, I mean for visits, etc.,but Miano could be the guy to keep it organized. I don’t think the recruiting coordinator could actually go out to recruit but I could be wrong. What exactly did George Lumpkin do at his job as rc?
#91,
That is true. Hopefully a bunch of the buff ‘n blue or whoever get together to donate a chunk towards the assistant coaches effort. If it comes to that.
Would be tough if Na Koa will have to work with the same kind of budget/donations but with added financial obligations to pay assistants.
#70 Lumpkin used to be a good recruiter but he hasnt been for many years. Stories of him not showing up at schools for presentations (Kamehameha last year) and not showing up for scheduled meetings with parents and coaches. That cant be good for recruiting.
#99 papa,
Your last question is something many people were curious about for years.
Kevin…I feel ya bro! Mommy didn’t send the care package yet. It’s coming with the kiddos gifts. No worry…that’s our Christmas breakfast plan.
#95 Hiring a tight ends coach? I’m sure koamahu would love to interview them.
#99 if you wanna get technical, the RC has to be a coach so the title is something like Dir of Player Personnel and he cant go into homes or call players. Lumpkin was put in that position to keep him on staff when the moved TT into his position. He did nothing to benefit UH recruiting. as I said in 101 used to be but no more.
ST ~
Oh, no, HNN just reported that Drew Loftus was arrested. Dang! Need more info on the story.
You can read Chow’s comments two ways…
1.) Respect the man for fulfilling his commitment to the Utah players.
or
2.) A bonus check may be collected if they win the Sun Bowl.
Being an Asian male I would be torn as well.
Stretch,
JJ will be ok at SMU. He said God told him it was his destiny to be there (I mean he made that claim AFTER the deal with ASU fell flat), but he said God told him anyway so it’s all G!!!
Good morning, gang!
Say it ain’t true… Hope the kid is not in trouble.
thats what she said.
WOOO!! GOOD MORNING!!!
Our entire assistant coaching staff *combined* salaries was less than than what Gus Malzahn was making as OC at Auburn last year. And that is what separates us from the big boys.
How much higher above $1m will the asst coaching salaries be bumped up? Hopefully at least $3-500k.
Chow is currently the OC & TE Coach at Utah,You can expect him to probably retain those positions which free’s up more cash for assistants
Papajoe – #104: Good one. I walk right into that one 🙂
My God people! Wholy “quit complaining” for one dang day!!!!!
We got some people saying it’s bad for Norm Chow to actually be a man of honor and finish what he started with the Utah Utes.
Are you guys kidding me?
He made a commitment, has a contract, has a relationship with those coaches and student athletes. All parties involved were aware of that going into contract talks. Get serious, it’s the right thing to do.
– Kevin
Really, cracking down on the puns? C’mon bro, can we relax a little bit? Can we take a step back and have some fun?
I thought the t-shirt Tsai showed this morning was, well, for lack of a better word cute.
Nothing wrong with “Chow Time” or Chow Fun”, not saying it’s clever or anything, but fun, perfect for the immediate moment.
I mean I get it: “It’s not the NORM” as far marketing goes, but fun none the less…..
– #92 post you wrote:
“Chow This” and Chow That” just comes off as lazy as it was the easiest pun to sell.
Key word my friend, in your own words, your statement…….(SELL)
Relax peeps, Happy Holidays one and all…..
morning
lots of excitement again this am
very punny thing going around
Auntie Slugger-
See #s 53 and 54.
Utah DC Kalani Sitake makes about $170K to Norm Chow’s $275K. I’m sure Utah will be making an effort to bump up all of their assistant’s salaries. Fan base seems to be tired of other schools hiring away Utah assistants.
Any increase in UH assistant salaries is a move in the right direction for the program. Read a comment in the SA from a reader outraged that Coach Chow will receive a considerable bump in his salary from $275K to $600K or more.
Congratulations to Coach Chow! Now that the contract is agreed to I can safely say “Welcome.”
I think part of Coach Chow’s hire was to get people back to the stadium. UH should be ready to sell season tickets as soon as their Christmas break is over.
sorry but kope still perking
#114—whoa cuz…sound like you need some chillaxing too. I get extra kahlua and cream coffee if you want. VSR is gone already though.
Kevin is grumpy because he’s hungry. No breakfast chow yet. 😆
I wonder if the Utah folks will be keep Coach Chow out of the bowl game. Maybe an announcement like “Chow pau now” will be made.
Sorry Kevin, I will try my best to stop the pun fun about the the one from Pun.
DPK,
Thanks for the blog alert! As you can tell, I haven’t read through the blog yet. Still on my 1st cup of kope.
Goooood morning!
dpk pretty soon you going end up dog chow lolo
I also hope that the UH promotions dept can capitalize on the hiring of Norm Chow. Start planning and promoting season ticket sales, spring practice events, posters, tees, etc. Need to be proactive and not reactive. Green and White Spring game (not scrimmage) at Aloha Stadium (televised 1-day delay) would also boast interest.
I just think that after all this time of Norm Chow’s name being brought up in past coaching searches, he finally gets the gig and the BEST people can come up with is a weak play on words with his last name that a five year old can do????
I already wrote my personal suggestion on what the theme could be instead so I’ll try not to say anything else.
KK –
Dog chow lolo, due to bad puns regarding the numbah one Palolo Pun?
Ya gotta admit, its pretty cool that the new HC is a Palolo guy.
it was mentioned this is the dead period. of course chow is on the phone talking to potential recruits. don’t think he is not recruiting.
honorary member of the chowder heads.
It’s never a good thing to be arrested.
It’s worse for a walk-on.
Good morning Tsaikos!
re: season tickets – can we start that *after* I receive my volleyball tickets? j/k
Please repeat your sugestion, Kevin. I must have missed it. I’m genuinely interested in reading your thoughts.
Kevin, thanks for comparing us to five year olds.
It is FUN to be young again.
Whoopie.
And poopie on you…:(
You would make a good North Korean “Dear” Leader…
What does “prowling cars” mean?
Ipu Man –
About the NK leader, IWWTHM has that job already.
unresolved issues? as in related to the hiring of our new head coach? 🙁
Yikes! Not a good first step in recruiting. Or is it?
Kevin, seriously, you take things too seriously. no need rain on others fun and excitement even if a 5-yo could do it.
Musta been a Jaguar
Stephen, please use “prowling cars” in a sentence and maybe we can tell you.
My theme for Chow would be the Beatles, Long and Winding Road.
Couch Potato…that’s a good one: Chowder Heads.
Since Norm the Worm is also Hawaiian, I like the
suggestion someone made yesterday(?):
Wow Chow Lau Lau.
Would a Rabbit be an appropriate car to “jump” start?
Yikes hopefully we get these 2 recruits in. they are the 2 positions that is needed this recruiting season.
There are many recruiting “needs”. It’s a matter of prioritizing them based on the new regime
Chow has to interview each of the current staff before choosing his staff. He already has some people in mind.
DPK, I hope IWWTHM has a better barber than the new NK leader.
so loftus was on all fours meowing, purring, or roaring at parked cars?
IWWTHM is much to nice of a guy to be even a benevalent dictator. And yeah, he’s got very friendly hair.
The “great successor” on the other hand could definitely use a “great hair stylist”.
Ipu Man, i’ve seen pictures of iwwthm and sad to say, same korean barber. just kidding around iwwthm. i’ll gift wrap some weapons grade plutonium for you. 😆
and a missle guidance system.
Gonna miss those stylish glasses frames of the former “Dear Leader” from NK. Definitely a fashion trailblazzer 🙂
Um.. nah no thanks. My kuleana my opinion. 😎
Prowling cars, parked in field of tall grass, ready to pounce.
Prowling cars favorite food? Road kill of course.
By the way, they reached a deal yesterday.
Chow can’t make it here until tomorrow, so they have mutual gag orders in place.
Hmmm. Puns on last names. Hmmm. Where have I heard that before …
Kevin, my opinion too. just sayin.
DPK,
Or something to that effect.
“Chow This” and Chow That” just comes off as lazy as it was the easiest pun to sell.
If they do a presser tomorrow I hope its at a good time amd broadcast live on TV.
Im sure UH site will have the full video up anyways.
Stormin Normin’s Warriors chow down trojans…wouldn’t that be a great!
tsaiborg reporter, on the job 24/7. thanks!
Ok so if you are a believer of the Words of Monsier Tsai you are a Tsaiko
You go up and up like Dave Reardon you are a Reardo
You pound the pavement for Nakoa and the betterment of the Student Athlete like Don Weir you are a Weirdo
.
.
.
So if you are all in for the New Coach, are you Norm-O???
I don’t know, JUST SAYING!!!
#153 –
How very true. *tsai*…
Chow-dah…
I am hoping that Dr. Chow retains Rolo as his OC. Rolo has played in multiple set offenses while playing in the European NFL and Arena Football. I believe he has developed a sizable play book and if the HC reviews them will see value in integrating his playbook with Rolo’s. The key will be to recruit players with the acumen to run those plays. A hybrid motion offense could make for some exciting plays. In keeping with the Pun references I suggest calling it “The Chow-nese Fire Drill.”
Kevin –
Lets show the Senate how to come together in the spirit of compromise:
The New Norm?!
You betacha!
Chow Time!!!
as bu laia would say, chowwwww-waiian.
😉
chow needs to keep tuioti and let everybody else go including miano.
i’d like someone to show the house of representatives the spirit of compromise.
167 –
Yeah, them too.
” … Chow is scheduled to appear at a Thursday press conference and a reception. … ”
“… They said the actual time spent on Chow’s salary “was about five minutes” with much more time devoted to structuring salaries for the nine assistant coaches. … ”
If you haven’t seen ferd’s updated col. …

#159 g1
i guess that was the recruiting news for the week.
Wishin Kevin Heaven
and good things this Christmas
and all “Tsai-kos”…
DPK,
There you go. CHOW TIME and then underneath “It’s the NEW NORM”.
I can live with that. 😆
e kala mai dpk had to much o in lolo just lol
da wat happens when the kope no kick in right away
so dpk you saying norman chow was a punaololo
I hope the UH Administration, boosters, fans and the media support Coach Chow’s decisions on who should be part of his staff. UH struck out twice before by hiring Von Appen and later McMackin instead of going after Norm. He has his system and he knows what it will take to make it work and who he needs to make it happen. If Norm cleans house, so be it. In the coaching circuit, nothing lasts forever and if some or all of the assistants have to move on, that is the nature of the beast. It is finally Norm’s gig and he should be given the flexibility and the support he needs.
Thursday – presser…
Friday and forward – full-court press on recruiting?
Sounds like a busy Christmas “rush”
I think most reasonable and objective fans should understand a head coach… ANY head coach of any program has the right to hire his or her own staff as they see fit.
As eluded to before, if they are bad decisions or good ones, the HC takes the blame and credit.
Are you paying attention Senate?! THIS is how its done!
See, the new Coach inspires and brings folks together and he hasn’t even finished the paperwork!
“Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow has accepted Hawaii’s offer to become its next head coach, agreeing to a 5-year deal worth $550,000 to $600,000 in base salary.
Hawaii is expected to make an official announcement later today.”
“Utah’s next recruiting challenge will be to convince Alexandru Ceachir, a 6-5, 300-pound lineman out of Santa Monica College, to uphold his commitment and sign with the Utes. Ceachir was recruited by Chow and is said to be wavering in his decision”
HOPE that Norm brings him along.
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/blogsutahsports/53162594-59/utah-chow-york-recruiting.html.csp
😳
Not to mention the AC interviews.
Many choruses of “All I Want For Christmas” in the halls of the football offices.
#175 –
No not saying that, bum bye da M*fia get me!
Besides, Norm is actually the Palolo Pun from Honolulu.
6-5, 300#
Oooo…tough to fit that in one carry-on!
Dress up Donovan like Santa Clause and he comes in dragging a large sack (like Santa does) and he pulls out Norm Chow who then proceeds to try to straighten his hair and clothing and says “what the hell was that????!!!!! Who’s idea was this? Anyway… (then proceeds with his speech).”
Ok, it would make for a funny Saturday Night Live skit, but still funny.
Hmm, just noticed this up top:
I don’t mind Coach Chow coaching at Utah for the bowl game, but I hope he tags whomever he is retaining, so they can continue recruiting.
O.K. ‘den. I guess renaming Bachman Hall is out then.
Hmmm… “prowling cars”…
Is that like scoping cars, looking for a ‘Cougar’?
How about every time he walks into Aloha Stadium, or a press conference, it’s like the TV show Cheers. Norm!
Gonna have to reconnect with these possible recruits to show (if) we’re still interested.
Thank you for getting turns so good material on your own website. I came across the idea online. Let me examine to go back once you article added aricles.
New head coach. New coaching staff. Different direction. Different standard of evaluating talent. Different type of personnel they may want to bring into the program. I’m assuming that some current players may not have their scholarships renewed, which is also very common with a new coach and staff coming in.
ST — Will there still be a walk-on program with or without Miano?
#184 Kevin you on it, has my vote
maybe add on some one looking like Karl Benson walking by saying Bah Humbug
Koakane,
Give credit to DPK on that one.
Can a coach bring in recruits he recruited for his former school.
Didn’t the USC coach get in trouble for that?
But would love coach Norm to sing, “Comma my house, come on”
like Rosemary Clooney…
Koakane,
Oh wait, you talking about the Santa and Chow in the sack gag?
I just thought it would be a funny incident.
I enjoy laughing at awkward moments during times of serious business.
The only thing that would make that press conference complete is Tom Berg causing a commotion at the UH parking booth refusing to pay $5.00 saying he left his cell phone in the arena.
why is UHAD dancing around FBS status unless they are willing to dole out the monies for Chow to be competitive in pursuit of a quality staff? Otherwise downgrade the program to something that fits their pocketbook–like the FCS division. It doesnt take a Dick Tracy to figure we are looking at $250-300,000 range for coordinators. Keep in mind, Hawaii is very expensive in contrast to mainland cost-of-living indices. In its configuration for Chow’s staff budget, UHAD has to automatically transfer the difference betw MAC and Chow’s salary to the assistant coaches budget, plus add on another sum to bring it over $1.5 m. That would be a minimal 50% increase. It sounds alot, but our assistant coach salaries heretofor were embarrassingly under the market and forced many staff members to moonlight to meet their family financial needs.
Look, we have witnessed good coaches failing without worthy assistants. At 65, I dont believe Norm Chow will be running around recruiting venues on the mainland like a Gib Arnold with his pants on fire. JJ hardly left Hawaii and his grad assistants did more recruiting than his staff. A significant number off JJs staff had ‘other’ jobs. He was forced to turn his head.
If UHAD does not take the huge step to upgrade assistant coach salaries–indeed this program will be eating chowfun, rather than ribeye, when counting gate receipts.
Thanks to Cam for banging out the contract last night. Cam you better stay in Cali. Who is going to be on G’s inter mural dodge ball team? They need you! Ha ha!
Ah…PMs…
So… hoping Coach will come to the presser with good news about season ticket renewals too!
GO WARIORS!
If you like chow mein, hows about CHOW MEIN GUY for UH football.
True d1 there are many needs but those 2 was a good start.
leave Tom Berg alone. I’d rather have a juvi tantrum-in-public than politicians who are convicted; take jobs with companies they are suppossed to be in-conflict; and dole out contracts to friends and family. Not to mention govt agents that shoot citizens after clubing hours. Crooks, conflicts-in-interest, political cronyism and after-night-shooters. Tom Berg? A fresh breath of air for a profession polluted with criminals, miscreants and crooks….
Shout out to the best (and I mean it!) Santa I have ever seen – sharing the spirit of Jesus and Christmas with the Kupuna….and his ‘little’ elves too. You know who you are. Bless you guys. Thanks for including me. Good fun.
Chow Time:
where have I haerd that before? hmmmmmmm!
It’s in Alsaska – outside of Juneau, I believe.
yep, that’s the name of one of four fishing boats we use every summer to fish at Anchor Point Lodge on Shelter Island. this past season, they were bringing up 22 – 26.6 # black cod or aka butter fish!
Here’s the campus situation courtesy of Ian Lind’s blog – his wife is a professor at UH-Manoa:
Then I recalled the university has been shutting down over the Christmas-New Year holidays, and during Spring Break, in a money-saving effort. Most offices and buildings are closed, and air conditioning turned off, apparently bringing substantial savings.
The UH website describes the closures.
Computer services, including the UH computer help desk, are shut down. Even the libraries are shut down. Students and faculty have to rely totally on digital access if they need library resources before January 3.
It’s a minor inconvenience for some. Faculty are between semesters anyway.
But what about the thousands of other UH employees. HGEA’s Unit 8 alone has over 2,000 members in the UH system. Are they furloughed? Forced to take vacation?
So I put the question to Gregg Takayama, director of community and government relations, UH Manoa.
Does “administrative leave” means paid leave? I have to assume so.
Do energy savings really cover the cost of nearly two weeks of paid leave?
And is someone checking up to make sure those senior administrators are really on duty or on vacation while the rest of the system is shut down?
Bottom line: Does shutting down campuses during these periods really make economic sense?
Just to let you know – the security guards, the parking attendants both mauka and makai and the box office staff & The Stan/Rainbowtique employees are on the job as are the basketball & men’s volleyball coaches & teams, and Department of Athletics key administrators.
They may not answer their phones, but they will pick up text messages and e-mails on a regular basis.
One last thing: The Diamond Head Classic insert in today’s (real) paper contains information that clearly was not vetted & corrected – see Page 5.
For some reason, the closing of the blockquote did not happen. This is what I wrote – not Ian:
“Just to let you know – the security guards, the parking attendants both mauka and makai and the box office staff & The Stan/Rainbowtique employees are on the job as are the basketball & men’s volleyball coaches & teams, and Department of Athletics key administrators.

HGEA…. working hard for you… pfft…
Guess the opponent would have to change if conference alliance/merger goes through…
http://www.themwc.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/122111aab.html
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7376711/mountain-west-conference-aligns-sheraton-hawaii-bowl-starting-2012
Not sure if someone already mentioned this but the Mountain West will send a representative to the Hawaii Bowl in 2012 and 2013, replacing the WAC. The opponent will continue to be from Conference USA.
I don’t know if Hawaii will still get the “automatic” berth with a winning record, I guess it’s up to Craig Thompson and the Mountain West.
I wonder, in the near future, when Norman Chow says publicly that his “so-and-so” quarterback deserves the Heisman, will the Heisman voters listen?
Chow should not coach Utah bowl game and should immediately start work for UH. A man should not have two masters. We are right in the middle of JC recruits signing. If Utah JC recruits recruited by Chow are wavering as media says they are, that puts a lot of tension between Chow and the Utah coaches while he still coaches Utah. “Are you now recruiting that JC player to go to Hawaii or are you telling him to stay at Utah?” Does Chow show loyalty to Utah or to Hawaii? The ten days leading up to the Dec. 31 bowl game will be a very stressful ten days. If he quits ASAP and starts the Hawaii job, this tension goes awayk and this is the time he can use to get his assistants in line and talk to the JC players that have already committed to Hawaii.
Interesting, Carter Chow, Norm’s son, serves as his agent. His wife of forty years, Diane, doesn’t like the cold, whatsoever. One of his son’s is still a student at USC. Another graduated from there.
His daughter, Maile, was married on the North Shore in the summer of 2003 and is a teacher at Sacred Hearts Academy. Chow’s son-in-law teaches at Kamehameha.
His relationships with the Lee brothers go way back…
http://archives.starbulletin.com/2003/09/12/sports/story2.html
And even with 30+ years on the mainland, he still considers Hawaii home…
Welcome home, Coach Chow… E’ Komo Mai!
Combine the West Coast with Run-n-Shoot, that way “Chow Time”, the “New Norm”, well that offense to honor his Chinese heritage, let’s call that offense “Win Wun Soon”.
wOAH!
Almost forgot!!! ONE YEAR TO GO!!!
Jiminy Crickett:
It all depends on when the contract is signed. He’s still not on UH payroll, is he?
Checked with John yesterday the Group will be staying here:
http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/laxjw-jw-marriott-los-angeles-la-live/
Was told Friday is open for your Na Koa shingdig or ESPN College Shingdig.
#210
Thanks for the info, Stretch. It would make sense to keep UH’s special arrangement with the Sheraton-Hawaii Bowl. Of course, looking at the other Bowl tie-in locations for the MWC, New Orleans, Las Vegas, San Diego, I wouldn’t complain too much if UH wound up in one of those bowls.
Remember how long it took to get Gib Arnold’s signature.. sheesh.
Didn’t I read somewhere that Chow is also a member of the LDS faith? If so, that is huge. In the world of college athletics, don’t ever underestimate the power of the Mormon church.
BIK
I THINK it’d be cool to keep the kiko an for UH to keep Rolo an Chow to try come together an make A WHOLE NEW OFFENSE thats based off the west coast an run n shoot concept! I prefer wins though but as long as we win! Best wishes to Coach Mac for trying im still backin mcmackin where ever he goes! I still wanna keep Aranda, ROLO, Tuioti, Brian Smith some how on staff but it’s chow’s time an he deserves to bring in whoever i would just really like to see Rolo an aranda get some good experience under their belt in HAWAII an build a succesful team
Go Warriors
Pacheco reporting the UH announcement that Norm Chow has accepted the job and the press conference is due tomorrow.
Imua Warriors!
Announcement by UH regarding NC:
http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/12/21/FB_1221110410.aspx
I’d appreciate it if the presser was aired live on KKEA 1420 between the hours of 6am to 7am.
Eh… long shot. 😎
Miano would be good to but i dont think him as db coach is good because we give up to many big plays. I really see a upside if we keep ROLO an Aranda though an even if its not as a coordinator job. The combination of the pistol that they tried to use at UCLA which already has been implemented here for 2 years add in Norm Chow an his brilliant offensive mind an the fact he run’s a pass first system like hawaii does i think its a good fit to have him an rolo here! ROLO could learn so much an plus with Rolo here i think the recruits would possibly stay! IF none of them NO who Norm Chow was! Hopefully he can elevate UH to that next level!
This is the best web blog I have read.
mih – #213 – as iwwthm and I stated last night, Maile Chow teaches English and journalism at MPI. She’s been there at least 5 years.
Go Owls!
Go Warriors!
Go Wahine!
#225 Miano can’t teach height. Our DBs were burnt by taller WRs and TEs. Miano is great at teaching good technique and his speed and quickness camps produced results. He was an excellent DB in the NFL and is able to teach the craft. His walk-on program has brought and produced quality players. If he is not retained he will find success in local coaching ranks and with his camps. The bottom line is the need to recruit bigger faster DBs, the most coveted of positions in football.
#31 if you’re looking for blame, accountants are mandated by state law to follow fiscally responsible propositions as dictated by the good people of Hawaii. Accountants don’t make their own rules. The athletic director is responsible for all sports at UH. That’s why he gets the big bucks.
At the old Advertiser, Maile applied for a job.
She wasn’t hired.
Blame Dan Nakaso, who appointed himself as point recruiter.
Interesting coaching rumors (just rumors). These two Utah assistants have been mentioned in the Salt Lake media as possibly coming to UH with Chow:
Morgan Scalley (safeties)
http://utahutes.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/scalley_morgan01.html
Jay Hill (cornerbacks and special teams)
http://utahutes.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/hill_jay00.html
WAC only has one bowl tie-in next year, that thing in Boise.
The Utah AD once referred to the UH football team as chihuahuas.
Stealing the Utes’ OC is delayed payback, I guess.
#212, well since chow is still under contract with Utah, according to your logic that would mean he should focus on Utah
Be careful what you wish for.
ST,
from chihuahuas to ‘chow-wow-was’, LOL….I crack myself up sometimes…. haha
“Chow’s two-year contract at Utah pays him $275,000 a year. It also includes a $20,000 bonus if the team goes to a BCS bowl game. Chow may leave the contract early by giving 30 days’ notice in writing.”
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7373365/norm-chow-expected-accept-hawaii-warriors-head-coaching-job-source-says
#233 – ST
How about this pun….
From “Chihuahua” To “Chow-Wow-Wow.”
Bulla,
You’re just to quick for me.
Great minds think alike.
I think?
Now we can be feisty chihuahuas! grrrrr.. bark bark.. hop hop.. bark bark.. grrr…
king katonk
that was just too wide open, i mean….wow-laulau….haha. unreal, we get a quality coach for 1/2 the money paid previously, not too shabby. hey, there’s a new ‘sheriff’ in town and things are going to change.
remember, it’s the HC’s ar$3 on the line, his calls, his choices, his decisions, determines his longevity….
GO WARRIORS…….
still thinking with the oh so great one….king katonk 🙂
O.K.
How about this one…
“Eh, Like Beef with Chow Men?”
(sorry for haole pronunciation)
So ST what becomes of the commitments we recieved from Turner & Lavaka?
mih
you know what i love about those little chihuahuas???? they’re really pesky, irritating little things, always hanging around and always nipping at your heel……just like how we want to be in every game……i think…….
all the new menu items for aloha stadium:
chow fun
chow dah
chow mein
chow yuk
chow chow special
lun-chow-ah special
and more to come…………..
ST has updated his header.
Im strangely uncomfortable with Chow’s salary.
How about Like Like Power Drives…
Bwaaaaa…. so it came back to bite him. Yip,yip, yip
Does this mean the assistants will have another 500K to split?
Did Chow take less so that his assistants could get more?
I miss Mack.
Lychee Defense:
Gobble them up
and spit ’em out…
Take a lower salary so he can bring in some “quality” assistants that he can work with and be on the same page. Says a lot about Norm Chow and how much he wants UH to be successful. Fans gotta do their part by putting their okoles in the seats at Aloha Stadium, donate to Na Koa, etc.
Apparently, the media guys in Utah haven’t gotten the word. They still think Chow will be earning $1.1 million. Radio sports guy Alema Harrington was going on about Chow buying a house on Maui and retiring in a few years.
# 231 – great profiles; the new coach would be omfortable with them.
but i don’t think they will come here; large families; high cost of living.
unless, of course, they could get a decent salary.
Maybe we can get Geiko to sponsor a new cheerleader…
The UH Gekko!
Nah…too weak…need a Hawaiian Warrior for sure.
Imua!
Welcome home, Coach.
Take good care of the kids.
GO WARRIORS!
WHO watched the Wahine bb team last nite?
What you don’t want:
Returning player: Hey coach. Why do we have to do things this way? It wasn’t like this last year. These new coaches are always on our cases. I don’t see the point of all of this.
Retained UH assistant: I know, I know, but we have a new head coach now so you gotta follow and get with the program.
Returning player: S#$! things were better and more fun under Coach……… last year.
He now has a signed contract with UH with permission to coach in the bowl game. It is even weirder now b/c of media reports that certain Utah assistants might come to Hawaii. Tell me this is not a distraction to Utah’s bowl preparations and a distraction to the football players at Utah? Chow is now a competitor to Utah yet working on the inside. Having been in a position having one leg in with an employer and the other leg in with a competitor of the employer, I can tell you that Utah and the staff and players are distracted and it is not a good situation. Maybe Chow and Utah staff and players can handle it, but I have my doubts.
Georgia Tech is a Ramblin Wreck…
but their mascot is a bumble bee?
What does a Ute look like?
#257 – Wrong guy Liz. New coach is not going to call them kids. New coach is going to hold every player accountable. A lot of them will be very uncomfortable with the new coach. Lack of productivity will not be tolerated. Lack of effort will not be tolerated. Lack of focus and committment will not be tolerated. No hugs and kisses coming from the new coach. He’s more of the my way or the highway kind of guy. He will be fair though. Everyone will be treated equally.
With respect to the student-athletes at UH Manoa, I don’t think any of our players currently on the program are whiners as eluded to here.
Likewise, I don’t think a member of the current staff would agree or even acknowledge things were easier last time, even if they were.
If such dialogue were to happen, there is an easy solution for the new HC to clear things up.
Jiminy Crickett, are you a utah fan?
a ute is a utility vehicle.
Hope the “contract” has a “buy-out and/or retirement clause” which all parties have agreed upon and mucho meaningful $$$ incentives.
“meanigful”? yep, and you can put anything you want into this. for example, NO non-BCS school will ever be put into the national championship game that’s reserved for the privilege few atop the BCS – most of the non-elite programs will never have a chance to play for the big tamale! Can you see an Illinois or Miss St or Duke or Wazzu or Ucon in the big one?
it’s like the 99% vs the 1% – who plays for the mythical national championship game?
Yes. “My way or the highway” guys are the more fair than not. Well, the good ones at least.
While not a football scenario, a UH softball alum once shared a story about Coach Coolen and his knack and pension for being on time and being orderly for practice, workouts, study hall, etc…. At first it was VERY hard on new players not used to it and Coolen demands excellence if perfection is not attained. But he’s fair.
In the end, the alum credited Coolen’s methods and approach of holding players responsible and treating them like adults to her adaptation to the working world after college.
I think anyone can appreciate a coach in any sport that operates this way.
Don’t understand why people are worked up about why Chow still in Utah to finish up their bowl game?
It’s because he still have a contract with Utah and nothing is official till tomorrow press conference. And Utah head coach Whittingham requested he would like see Chow to finish the bowl game with the players.
One of Chow’s cornerstones is integrity. He’s doing just that.
Highway???
Utah’s mascot is a guy in red football uniform with the head
of a red hawk known as “Swoop”…
University of Utah “Utes” honor the American Indian tribe for which the state of Utah is named. The Utes have inhabited this area of the country for at least 1,000 years. The Utes were among the first American Indians to acquire the horse as a means of transportation, and in rock writing the Utes are depicted as horses.
After several armed conflicts with Mormon settlers in 1861, the Utes were relocated to the Uintah Basin in northeastern Utah, numbering about 3,300 “offical members”…
Kevin: I HOPE this isn’t the case, but it has been known to happened at other programs when a new HC and staff takes over. Agree, and I hope that Coach Chow and his assistants will put an end to such nonsense, should it arise, very swiftly. Practice should be harder than games.
“offical = official
As I said yesterday and mark your calendar:
PS Heard Sitake not interested in coming to Hawaii?
Who doesn’t want to come home? No ONE!
kevin,
how come u stay uncomfortable with the salary?
At least six Tsai-kos were at The Stan last night supporting Na Wahine basketball team in person.
mikey, it’s just a cricket.
I hope chow brings in former 4 star Stan hasiak… One of his former recruits and players now in the JC ranks.
#261:
a Ute is the “nickname” for the American Indian tribes that lived in Utah long before Brigham Young and others decided to settle the land.
reason you see the likeness of feathers on their helmets.
i’m just a potato, that can write.
Mikey,
Mahalo for the information on the Marriott.
We are looking for a large, low cost venue where we have contacts right nowin LAX.
Next is to line up a venue in SAN.
Did John mention where in SAN they were placing the fans??
E-mail went out to Na Koa this morning to call me to see if they want to join Letterwinners in this effort. As you know, a successful fundraiser takes a significant amount of planning for success.
lol, A-House reminds me of the 3g vs 4g commercial.
Plus what’s the rush for Chow to get started… He’ll get started and all of 2012
It’s the Holiday period… Take it Slow and quite period…
No contact with future Warriors period…
Let the players enjoy their holiday with the family too.
Merry Christmas!
Hasiak had many challenges and the coaches thought it best that they part ways….. and that happens a lot…..
Utah 35 – Georgia Tech 31
Nevada 21 – So Miss 31
Iwwthm,
It’s too low. I dunno. It’s one of those things…
#260 -Jiminy Crickett – thanks for the reminder that what is done unto others before can be done unto us later…
#262 – Pride. They are kids to ME… wanna see them succeed and graduate and not injured or sacrificed for the entertainment of the masses. That’s just my definition of success…
Oregon 68 – Wisconsin 42
very good publish, i actually love this web site, keep on it
LSU 14 – Alabama 17
Boise State?
Don,
In SF staying at Marriott at Fisherman Warf
But there is no game in SF. Originally, was @ BYU but got moved to a later date.
Right now 9/8/2012 is an open date. 12 games are already on schedule for 2012.
#261 Ipu Man….
A “ute” is anyone under the age of eighteen but generally used as a term for someone between the ages of 10 and 15….MMWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
As Joe Pesci would say, “These two utes had nothing to do with the car theft.” (My Cousin Vinny).
#262 – Pride – If that is the case then I’m behind him all the way, football is a violent sport, it was meant to be played that way, as former coach said “this isn’t pee-wee football”.
KA-CHOW
So JJ, is that italian?
Kevin,
yeah, i kinda know wut u mean…its…well, hopefully the assistants get a big boost.
Dr. Chow = Dr. Pepper
Trust him, he knows what to do…He’s a doctah!
#260 Jiminy Crickett. Imagine UH going to a bowl game and one or possibly two coaches abandon ship. One coach is the fellow that calls the offensive plays and is the one that the offense depends upon to call the shots.
One would think that abandoning his charges that way is a betrayal of his men. Somewhat akin to a world-renown brain surgeon saying – oh by the way, I’m leaving town before your surgery is scheduled but someone will be able to take over for me.
So it sounds like Coach Chow is not the kind of guy where a player can say, “Eh Coach, I can leave practice early today? I get one class project that I gotta prepare for.” If that’s the case, then it can only be a good thing for the team.
Does the Higher Power take over recruiting during this awkward period where Coach Chow is prepping the Utah offense till 12/31 and there are no assistants in place? Or are Coach Miano and staff still on duty until Coach Chow arrives after the New Year?
Now I’ll say it….
Congratulations and Welcome Home Coach Chow!
Darren, i don’t think anything prevents chow from calling potential recruits during this dead period.
Tomorrow, No. 8 Boise State (11-1) will meet Arizona State (6-6) in the 2011 MAACO Bowl Las Vegas on Dec. 22 at Sam Boyd Stadium.
BSU 77 – ASU 0
Chow has to give 30 days notice to Utah that he is breaking his 2 year contract in order for him to leave without penalty.
All this talk about coaching this game or not being in Hawaii for that is moot. Good or bad doesn’t matter.
Unless you are ok with UH dishing out $275,000 to buyout the rest of his contract at Utah, just enjoy the holiday season and this new beginning for our program.
I think that it says a lot about the man that only 5 minutes were spent on his salary, and rest of the two days was spent on the assistants. Well, aside from the fact that he’s probably financially secure, it seems that he’s looking out for the greater good of the program.
Ute is short for the sound an ipu makes….
Uuuuu te u te..te
MAU KAU KAU!!!
Uuuuu te u te… te….
mikey,
9-8-12 BYU will be playing Weber State University with new coach John L. Smith. lot of hawaii boyz still balling up there, and this will be one week after Weber plays Fresno State in the Dog Pound…..GO WILDCATS GO WARRIORS
It seems to question the power of the Higher Power when there are “unresolved issues” with Turner and Lavaka.
Lavell Edwards described Chow as “No nonsense, all business when it comes to coaching football.”
does that mean chow gives $57,500 to the church? assuming no bonuses were incurred.
Darren,
The report must be wrong. Cuz Chow is coming here to ride off into the sunset, grey hair and Ensure in hand to collect a nice pay check for retirement according to some. He couldn’t possibly care about his assistants pay or else that would mean he has a plan in mind and is taking this job extremely serious.
#310. IWWTHM,
Is there any other way?
#312
hehe, you funny, like dat though, pretty side door kine sly you buggah…….das right…..we get ’em from da patio too if can…….right on 🙂
Darren #313,
Noooo comment. 🙂
#312. IWWTHM,
LOL! Now we know why they always say that you can never make everyone happy…
Bulla,
I try but it’s usually just me laughing in a padded room all by myself.
Btw, I saw a well known Hawaii QB who is/was working under your roaming the halls of the Capital this morning. No need send your strong arms to the square building, JesseJ got the nonsense under control. 😛
wow! chow’s pay just got cut $25k to $550,000.
iwwthm,
with the situation in manoa, i wonder if he’s going to need more hours? ouch…..also got former DT Samuseva working at another property….no discrimination, linemen and skill positions….haha
What a difference a year makes…
TCU.
from Pasadena to San Diego…
from Wisconsin to LaTech…
from Roses to Poinsettias
Hawaii
from not practicing for a bowl game to not practicing for a bowl game…
LOL
Hey LaTech is playing.
Where’s Phillip Livas? 😆
Mikey,
I am looking for the ‘fan’ base hotel in San Diego for the SDSU game in 2012.
Any help??
There are ways to “succeed and graduate and not (get) injured or sacrificed for the entertainment of the masses.”
However, none of them involve a collision sport.
I hope he gets his staff together soon if he is going to be coaching at Utah till the end of december. He needs to hit the ground running and get out there and get some players. He has a lot of work to do. But I am very happy is now our coach. Was the best candiate by far.
Say what? ESPN Pac 12 blog is commenting that Chow doesn’t particularly like recruting and he has acknowledged that. That is quite surprising since the Heach Coach is the very one who is supposed to sell the program and close the deal. We’ll have to see how things go from here on out, but I think this might be a red flag. Plus, at his age I’m sure his energy level is not the same compared to somebody in the 30, 40, or even 50s. But, give him his due. It’s his time now and let’s see what happens. The program is too important to go backwards. We want to move to another level up to be very good consistently where we are reloading instead of rebuilding.
The big question on the minds of many Hawaii fans is whether newly appointed Hawaii head coach, Norm Chow, will rennovate his offensive playbook to fit hawaii’s current inventory of talent, or install his offense and gradually find pieces to fit. One is Darwinian in nature and the other is rigidly structured personnel-wise. Growing pains could turn into growling pains.
Hawaii fans have become spoiled with prolific producing offenses over 12 years and have come to expect an offense eating up yards along the lines of a Norman Schwarzkopf invasion.
Struggling offenses bored fans.
It was especially true under Dick Tomey and Fred Von Appen.
Both initiated offenses that made Kona coffee bean gulpers yawn.
Wags, adapted immediately, and employed Paul Johnson to install his spread offense that took off quickly….on the ground.
And, who can forget JJ’s turn-a-round first year in 1999. It was an offense that started a rage….and an airforce.
Still, another issue, is whether Chow can recruit the talent he needs to install a pro-type O.
That is the reason JJ was successful. His offense accomodated recruits within Hawaii’s physical range and capacity. Chad Owens, Davone Bess and Kealoha Pilares are testatments to this coaching philosophy.
Perhaps, we should enjoy the romance stirred by this new marriage, but, LOI day is more sooner than later, and replacement selections for a new O and D coordinator are overdue.
Not to mention his staff and frontline recruiters.
Is Coach Chow innovative?
We shall see….
Don,
Best ask Garrett for SD area that’s his territory
12/21/2011.
What difference will THIS year make?
12/21/2012
Not to start another rumor but question of the day is:
Will Wilson follow Chow to Hawaii?
11/24/2012 at San Diego State Qualcomm Stadium
Now that’s another fun city to look forward to but SDS is moving to Big East…
But we have SDS for rest of the sports in Big West to look forward to.
Basketball here we come… And Mexico is a stone throw from SD…
Signed sealed and delivered…LOVE IT! Welcome home Coach Norm!!!
Now, it gives all of us all the reasons to watch the Sun Bowl. Get a taste of what our offense would look like in 2012 and hey, who knows…our defense too if Sitake ends up coming.
From breaking news…never heard of bonuses for “nationally televised victories”. I thought only bloggers groused about getting hammered all the time on ESPN…
Josh Pacheco radio show today had a Utah radio station guy on the program. In his opinion, Wilson looks to be staying with Utah. While Chow had a major part in recruiting him to Utah, Wilson has since developed a good rapport with the WR coach. Lets see how this turns out
winning on national TV helps to sell your program. That makes mucho sense. Hawaii has a poor track record for winning football games on national TV.
incentive for national TV wins is a great idea, win-win. I thought Gib A had something like that also?
#323. I can recommend The Handlery Hotel. It’s a family run business with a second hotel at Union Sq., SFO
You should call Jon Handlery, 415 781-7800, at the SFO property. He has a lot of Aloha for Hawaii residents. I’m sure if you talk to him and explain your needs he will go out of his way to accommodate you.
Add in another incentive for national televised victories over nationally ranked opponents.
“If it never happened on TV, it never happened.” – Vince K. McMahon, Jr.
To an extent yes, but I think we get the picture here.
If the training table can incentify the team with omelette Mondays. Can the coaches incentify the team with Morton steak house Mondays for TV victories?
On one hand some are saying that Chow should honor the commitment he made to Utah by coaching through the Bowl game, then on the other hand hoping that some of the players that committed to Utah break that commitment and follow him to Hawaii?
I’d like to see Norm here ASAP… Trying to staff and recruit from behind is never a good thing.
#275 ~ Correction: at least 7… 🙂
2012 will be a questionable year for sure. As Coach Chow’s plan for the program is unveiled, no one can for sure say things will run smoothly on both sides of the football.
No way fans should expect a repeat of what Jones did in 1999, anything is possible, but a new leader is working things out, gotta give it time, hell, gotta give it a few seasons as we did with Greg McMackin.
So I know some are wondering… are practices going to remain open to the public??? Personally I don’t care. As I said when Greg McMackin got hired, his choice, his call, no complain.
Speaking of national TV.. Football Documentary- “Game of Honor” premiers tonight on Showtime. A solid up close and personal Football film thats gives in-depth and unprecedented access to the Army vs Navy rivalry. side story Niumatalolo vs Ellerson. Wanna know what Kenny is like in the locker room? as a head coach and leader? check it out. worth a look. If this doesn’t help both schools recruiting I dont know what will..
Eh,….. A part of me agrees Chow should hit the ground running as soon as tomorrow with the GREEN and WHITE, but a BIGGER part of me is all habut about coaches ditching their teams in bowl season… That Brian Kelly BS with the Bearcats was PILAU in my opinion, probably because it was the program’s first BCS bowl, but still….
Anyone going to the reception tomorrow for Coach Chow at Washington Place?
Travis Wilson?? I think he was planning to graduate from high school early and enroll at Utah for spring ball. But you have to wonder if he’s having second thoughts. Same for that big JUCO O-lineman from Santa Monica JC that Chow was recruiting and got a verbal from. How many times has UH lost verbal commits to other schools who came in at the last minute? Maybe UH could return the favor to these schools. Just a thought.
JC OT Alexandru Ceachir (Verbal to Utah) (sorry, CU recruiting site)
http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/68653-12-JC-OT-Alexandru-Ceachir-%28Verbal-to-Utah%29
WTF,
The Governor is hosting the reception for Norm Chow.
Can we get a kupuna to bless Chow before and after the shindig?????
Gov cannot save his image by rubbing shoulders with the new popular kid on the block…
Bad enough when two loyal democratic liberals (two of my friends) booed the Gov on the big screen during the USC/UH volleyball match. 😆 😆

CHOW TIME! LET’S GRIND!
Just a request to the media outlets:
If you are selecting a photo to use of Norm Chow in relation to his hire at UH, please use the one UH found where he’s just wearing a suit at least.
Saw a link online with the headline of Chow coming to UH, but the pic was of him in that FUGLY ARSE UCLA color polo shirt on. 😆
Unacceptable.
WORST superpower ever.
West Point and Annapolis need help recruiting?
d1 – i think thats the only reason why kenny let the cameras in the locker room. camera’s usually don’t roll in his locker room. nonetheless, the whole season. Recruiting masterpiece!

No, no, no. We don’t need Hasiak. To many issues. IMO.
I was always under the impression that “reverse recruiting” was par for the course at the military academies.
Are these three donkeys gonna mention that Hawaii beat LaTech by 3 scores?
I think there should be a Chow Time Food Truck Fest at the next spring game.. ST is right, somehow, someway they need to make the spring game an event. Foodies will fill the seats!
Who dat?
Tryna block the “so wrong” mental image of that! 👿 😈
Star Advertiser should have photo-shopped that pic on the front page today. The one with Chow raising his hand in the air.
Take out the red trim, put some green in there. Phase out logos, put in the H.
In the background, the TOP of Diamond Head.
(Btw, the I could have added in “If they were smart” to start off this post, but this was said in RETROSPECT and no need to sugar coat that. Easier to make observations and suggestions sometimes AFTER you see someone else do something.)
Interesting.
http://www.dhrinternational.com/
Glenn Sugiyama is VP of the Chicago office of DHR International… which is a glorified head-hunting firm.
Remember that the cornerstones of Norm’s Hawaiian heritage are faith, family, friends and integrity. These are qualities that all of us value. So, how could we expect no less of him but to fulfill his obligations to Utah before taking over here?
377 – lol
Extremely interesting post. I felt your post is very interesting. Thanks!
Mahalo cheepono
That’s an obvious nic dont ya think, #383?
DHR working for Chow or UH? Chow has been known to trainwreck interviews. If for Chow, good to know it works..
Now us villagers gotta chip in & do our part to help our Football program succeed. Norm & his staff can’t do it alone – the program sorely needs $$$.
I think we should have Chris Lee & Edgy Lee make a major motion picture (ex. “Mission Chow”) with all proceeds donated to the UH Football/Athletic program. Bloggers can do their part by acting as extras without pay – just free kau kau okay. (Ferd L. & Dave R. can be the villains.) We make one good movie & we’ll be on easy street all the way to BSC Bowls. (You know how much those blockbuster movies make!)
Oh shucks, that was just my Christmas dream . . .
Mele Kalikimaka to all of you!
Not going work. Chris Lee is one Iolani Boy.
That’s ok. Punahou & Iolani guys/gals get along alright.
No such thing as Iolani “gals” then.
once the dust settles the search for some tight ends begins. probably need to go the jc route.
there could be some roster position changes for some.
this spring training will be so important towards the shaping of chow’s first team. every one is a rookie now.
Punahou had ’em – I was there (and they were for real).
on another note…cattle call’s shall now be aptly renamed to chow calls.
next week would be a good time.
TE’s.
was thinking about this while watching the Niners’ game the other day.
In the “copy cat” world of the NFL it would seem that Harbaugh’s offensive success may lead to a run on TE’s in the next draft that would then trickle down to CFB.
As the demand goes up and the searches intensify amongst the “name” programs and they start stocking up on those type athletes it may make it a little more challenging for a team that is trying to go from zero TE’s on the roster to 4 or 5 in the system.
(did I mention that I’m off on Tuesday?)
That was an amazing throw-catch by LaTech…
Bush-Loo the start to TE U
Probably a good place to include in the TE search would be the upper Midwest.
Wisconsin’s OL roster over the past several years has many former TE’s who have been “reshaped” into OT’s with some pretty good feet.
That’s a pretty good start but prolly would need to go with a JC guy if, in fact, a TE will be utilized in the Colliseum
Darn…this AA commercial always gets me
Fantastic blog post. You often write a intriguing blog post. Thanks!
Hey ST, do you have a list of the 42 plus applicants for the job? Was Chow the anonymous applicant mentioned in the Friday article?
I can see a “angry bird / niner 33 stack set” in the Colliseum. 3 tight end’s confuse the hell out of those cheaters.
momotaro,
No mo nobody at UH this week…go check da rubbish next week for the applications! 😆
OK. All us gotta re-learn/get updated on Run Football.

Chow will be no nonsense. But I have a really good feeling that our boys will respond. They got no choice.
The days of the head coach wearing slippas is over my friends.
He is a smart man with many years of working with young folks. There is a way to expect the best and still love your players. Personally, I hope Chow works them hard and instills great smarts and great discipline……almost like Boise. 🙂

K State being pro active, renewing sections of season tickets for 2012 FB….
New $102 View Level 2012 Football season tickets are sold out! 2010 view level ticket holders in 420/430 can renew at $102 through 1/6.
wearing slippas fridays on the field was a total disrespect to the intensity of the game – video guy, maybe. Leader? No
some people say Chow should honor his commitment to Utah by coaching thru the Bowl game. My questions are these: 1. He has a 2 year contract with Utah. If your logic is true, shouldn’t he stay thru the 2 years and keep his commitment before coming to Hawaii? 2. He is obviously breaking his commitment with Utah, which is OK, and wouldn’t not coaching in the bowl also be also OK so he can hit the ground running? 3. He now has a commitment to Hawaii; so which commitment is acceptable to break; the one with Hawaii or the one with Utah?
My point is when coaches leave, they are caught in the middle of a rock and hard place and there are different opinions and no easy answers. Me being a Hawaii fan, I would like to see coach Chow come right away.
http://smartfootball.com/gameplanning/can-the-west-coast-offense-work-anywhere-besides-the-nfl
I think this article may explain why Rolo may not fit into the new regime
K State season tickets for all other section go on sale in March 2012.
UH needs to amend their system to allow season tickets sold in this fiscal year to be credited to the next fiscal year in which the monies are to be expended. How about an escrow account to hold the funds through June, and when the next fiscal year begins the money is re deposited into the UHAD account.
Let K-Mart handle the ticket sales thru their Layaway Counter
….maybe someone can pay off my balance! 😆
Jiminy Crickett:
I think we both read the same article and in it Utah coach Kyle Whittingham commented that the two year commitment is there to discourage assistant coaches from job hopping to equal or lesser positions at bigger name schools. That would be frowned upon. It is not, however, designed to prevent an assistant coach from pursuing a head coaching job elsewhere.

ST…I read the other day that Norm Chow is considered the 1st Asian-American HC in major college football and I’m not begruding him of that. But I know back in the early 1960’s…Jimmy Asato was the HC of the then ‘Bows. I asked Mel Wise who was Jimmy’s QB during that era and he said Jimmy is Asian-American. I guess the operative word here is…”MAJOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL”.

Papa Leahey seems pissed that UH didn’t interview Rich Miano. Very interesting L&L show.
2011 has been a tough year for Pops. He is pissed at many things.
al,
keep me posted on the chow call, there’s a ‘beast’ i have to feed and he’d love to partake…..mahalo
2 questions:
1. if chow has three losing seasons, can he be fired without paying him a cent.
2. who at uh will take the hit for this failure? donovan? or the committee? it seems there is no accountability.
interesting dialogue regarding Miano;
one side says he deserves an interview because he is the interim head coach, valid point
one side thinks, why waste time and effort, he doesn’t meet any of the criteria they have
both sides are right in their own perspective.

Club Genji — from 7:00 pm
The family invites all Tsai-kos to attend and karaoke in memory of John’s favorite activity. From his sister:
Spent 5 minutes negotiating his salary. Spent the rest of the negotiations on his Assistant Coach’s salaries.
Wants to fulfill his commitment to his current team and coach Utah in their season’s Bowl game.
Coached Quarterbacks Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer, and Matt Leinart.
Is all business when it comes to coaching football.
I like him already!
Aloha and welcome home, Coach Chow!
I saw a Basketball State Tournament Championship game on Maui on 1964. The game pitted Punahou and Hilo. Of course, being from Maui, I was rooting for Hilo because Hilo joined the MIL in football that year. Punahou was the #1 seed and was led by Charley Wedemeyer, Chris McLaughlin, and Norm Chow. Hilo was the #2 seed and had players like Raphael Tomas, Allen DeSilva, Cal Manliguis, Jim Makaio, and a guy by the name of Leroy Binyan. To make a story short, Hilo beat Punahou in a very close game. War Memorial Gym was a sell out and the place was rocking. Binyan was unconcious with his shots and was the MVP. To this day, it is the best Hawaii State basketball tournament game I have ever seen. You can ask McLaughin and Chow yourself. I will never forget that game as long as I live.
http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/31966/chow-gets-his-chance-at-hawaii
I’ve noticed the videos show that Chow, as the OC, sits in the pressbox and calls the plays. He’s been successful being up there as he can see the whole field from above. As the head coach, he will have to be on the field. I hope that he is able to view the field as effectively as he does from upstairs. I wonder if it’s going to be a problem??
The problem with Miano not getting an interview was the criteria itself. There is no relationship between success and failure if the head coach came in as an assistant coach, coordinator or former head coach. The criteria was set by people who have no expertise in determining who might be a good fit to be head coach. I’m not saying Chow is not a good fit because either he or Akina would have been great choices. The issue is the criteria.
#435
Has Coach Chow mentioned if he will be the OC also? If so he will need someone he can trust in the booth.
PolyMom
As long as the venues are close to the JW Marriott in LAX.
Spoke with Na Koa today and I am setting up a meeting for the end of next week.
We are looking at a fundraiser topic that fulfills the needs/requirements of Na Koa and the Letterwinners Club.
Coach Chow will give Na Koa his list of needs/wants as priorities.
I spoke with Panda and they are asking about hotels in SAN. I found a great contact with the Crown Plaza in Mission Valley next to the Trolley Line. Very nice ‘digs’ with a Polynesian theme (www.cp-sandiego.com). If Panda books the hotel we have a great opportunity to get a huge reception area gratis. Problem is MWC has not given a date for the UH vs SDSU game.
Perhaps we may persuade ESPN 1420 to do radio from both venues: live.
Tsaikos heading to San Diego; The San Diego Trolley circles the greater San Diego region with lines to the border of Mexico, to Oceanside, East County, Old Town, Little Italy, Petco Park, and Qualcomm Stadium. Something to keep in mind in lieu of renting a car.
This seems like a win win win for all concerned. Chow gets a 2x raise over what he currently makes. JD gets a coach for what should be considered below the market rate. The overall HC salary for next year will be about what is already budgeted and what McMackin would have been paid. By taking a lower salary it sounds like Chow was able to negotiate for a higher pool to pay assistants, which is obviously a very smart move. We have a coach that we can be pretty sure is not going to bolt for a different program. He is old enough that he could retire gracefully if things don’t work out, but not so old that we should not expect to fulfill his contract and perhaps beyond. He is the same age as Dave Shoji after all — and Dave does not seem like he is slowing down at all.
More importantly perhaps is that it has been pretty clear that Chow has wanted to come home for some time now — there is only one college fb HC job in the Islands and he has been consistent in being interested in the job.
It is going to be really interesting to see the staff he puts together. With next year’s schedule he will be thrown right into the fire — just like both JJ (USC) and Mack (Florida) were.
#422 Sluginca: While I go back further than that, I don’t recall too much about the schedule but I think Jimmy Asato’s team played only the Town Team, and a bunch of service teams.
Despite the schedule, the old stadium was pretty well attended
#443 Derek.
Those were years of Viking lore you speak of.
I believe the team was coached by the legendary Al Manliguis….Cal’s older brother. Cal still is in Hilo and you can see him in the Kupuna softball league as skipper of the Onomea Rangers. Al still around too.
Cancer took Uncle Leroy Binyan pretty quickly. ’till the end, that man had a big heart. I got a cd of church songs he recorded. They passed it out at his funeral. I had the pleasure of spending time with him in his later years.
Those were some glorious days for in Hilo High history.

Pops was also concerned that Coach Chow will change our offense and that it would take a couple of years before we can get a winning team as we would have to recruit the right personnel for his offense.
I think Coach Chow is smart enough to tinker with the RnS in his first year while introducing his version of the West Coast offense slowly into the package.

These white/black/blue versions are a bright addition to the New nike soccer shoes Laser III range, and where the standard Lasers differ to the Mercurial Vapor Superfly Elite versions is that you get to see more of the Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly pop-art pattern, which continues onto the sole-plate.
In quite stark contrast to the Nike mercurial soccer cleats current Black/Electric Green colourways, it’ll be interesting to see how popular these new Nike Mercurial Vapors T90 Laser III soccer shoes prove to be with the likes Mercurial Vapor Superfly 3 of Wayne Rooney, Wesley Sneijder and Rio Ferdinand.
pops should stick to broadcast journalism and not coaching d1 football.
same with bc who keeps berating the current roster.
two guys who never attend practices and yet speak as if they do.
Welcome and good luck to Coach Chow ! I’m surprised that no one is questioning him getting a 5 year contract so easily, though. No one’s asking about buy-out clauses, etc. Though he’s not my first choice, I am relieved and delighted that UH isn’t introducing Koetter as the new HC; that would’ve been horrifying. I cannot believe anything else would be as horrendous except for maybe…Jim Bolla being re-instated as Wahine Basketball coach. Doesn’t that nightmarish thought at least make you appreciate Coach Dana a little bit more? Incidentally, by presenting Koetter as a viable and preferred finalist, that proves the incompetence and lack of credibility of the appointed selection committee. I wouldn’t trust them to pick out my breakfast cereal, much less an important university hire.
so yesterday i got to chat with solomon kaulukukui former qb at the university in 1946. man of great character and humor.
he went on to say that yah his brother had more talent than he. he fully acknowledged that but reminded me that he though was the better looking one.
the guy is still in great shape btw.
450…bum bye you learn.
it is typical to give a football headcoach a five year deal these days. naturally this time the contract has buyout provisions for both parties.
the last contract was such a “knee jerk reaction” by our inexperienced chancellor that it was a huge mistake to have a no buyout provision.

I gotta agree with you about Coach Chow being smart enough. But with our qbs throwing the ball 40+times a game, don’t you think it would be easier to hand off the ball a few times rather than trying to read the defense to throw a pass? I think we do have capable qbs with Graves, Stump, Schutter, Spain, etc.. Having Iosefa as a fullback and Jackson or that redshirt which names excapes me right now would be a good start for having 2 running backs. Our Oline returns some young guys so I think our offense will be OK.
i believe that chow will bring in his own oc, one that he has mentored in the past.
hopefully, rolo can work with the offense somewhere as the qb or wr coach. it would behoove him to learn the west coast offense a bit more. i believe he has experience with it in nfl camps and nfl europe.
Chow’s offensive success will be predicated upon a good offensive line. We struggled this year, but I think we do better next year with the boys a year older. Shige, Chauncy, Lefotu, Lloyd, Loeffler, Legay (only senior), may be good starting blocks. The guards gonna have a field day run blocking.

A variation of Run-N-Shoot sounds good i mean when he tried to run the pistol outta UCLA he didnt really have the talent to do so i think with OUR PLAYERS especially graves or caymen we have some agile qb’s with a great arm i think a variation running outta the kiko would work wonders for UH! then it did for ucla!
i would think that the chow offense will be implemented in the spring. there will be no returning starters. we’ll have an abundance of wr/sb’s for sure.
do we have potential te’s?

i to think Chows system will look close to our 4 wr set now, with a few variations. te 2 back at times. remember his overall love, to throw the football. but in certain times 2 backs and or a tight end are needed.
the best te prospect is waylon lolotai. who’s played te is probably a natural te in the first place.
also, i’d give a look at blake muir.
all of these except muir have played basketball so hands may not be such a problem.
whats in a name?
i could never figure out why any of our defenses over the years were never nicknamed…

Norm Chow’s hiring pros and cons.
Pros: well qualified, respected by his peers, has connections on all levels of football, Hawaii ties, great offensive mind, OC for national championship teams, cheap price for his credentials, NFL experience…
Cons: Five years of hearing/reading extremely bad puns!
SAWARRIOR:
That’s something we can all live with as long as the wins follow, eh?
410/411 d1shima. Please elaborate on why Rolo cannot in your opinion be retained. He ran it in the European NFL getting his team to the championship game before losing. He ran it in Arena on a small field. He tried to implement it with our team, though he was trumped by the HC. I don’t see him not being able to incorporate elements of the WCO and the RNS. The Patriots are a good example albeit with Tom Brady.
“Cougars CHOW on Warriors” oh boy… We better go undefeated. lol
BTW, Bill Walsh employed smaller and quicker OLs to dominate the league.
I hope Rolo is retained, he learned the R-N-S/Four Wide from the masters Mouse and JJ, it would be great if he learns another system from another offensive mastermind Norm Chow.
Like AlaWai and SAWARRIOR, I make no secret of the fact that I want Rolo to be retained. I’m hoping that if Chow is as sharp as people say he is, then he’ll see the merit of keeping Rolo. If he fires Rolo, I’ll be the first to challenge Chow’s “genius” / mastermind label.
no bodda me, I Chowing.
I didn’t have any favorites but I had a few that I didn’t want as Hawaii’s head coach. I just sat back and waited, and trusted JD and the committee. I admit now that I think we made the right choice in Chow. Looking forward to the new season. Is it Saturday yet?
@468
huh?
chow’s got a doctorate.
what you got?
chow’s played d1/cfl football
what you played?
chow’s coached 38 years at high levels, successfully.
what you coached?
you’re challenging his genius?
by what criteria in your possession that makes you the expert.
#468 Norm Chow is an offensive mastermind, his overall performance as a HC remains to be seen. No matter what decision coach Chow makes on Rolo, he is still an offensive mastermind proven by his years of success.

I saw this really good post today….
John Lister is the 3rd RB who was used this year. Don’t know who the RS RB is.
Desmond Dean needs to put on more weight/muscle if you’re looking to him as a TE.
Some of the guys are still working out during the break in anticipation of being their best when the new Coach gets to evaluate them. Good for them!
Night all!
RS RB is George Lumkins nephew, Will Gregory. Highly touted Safety/Running back. Coaches wanted to give him a chance at running back but really wanted him to play defense.
much anticipated presser tomw at 3 pm. all stations are covering it.
Ohhhhh man….imagine this……we pick up a couple of 6’5 wide outs, a speedy cut back runner with Iosefa as a fullback,Graves and Stump are gonna have a field day on roll outs an play action with their 4.4- 4.5 speed….my mouth is watering!
Hello! I just would like to give a huge thumb up for the great info you have here on this post. I will be coming back to your blog for more soon.
Let me be a little creative in case UH wins its first few games….t-shirt would read as follows….”chow-won” (get it?? chawan…like in ricebowl??)
Unfortunately, ten games into the season, we had no effective succession strategy at QB. This was the tragedy of the season, especially since all our successful seasons have relied on a backup QB to win one or more key games for us. No better example than Rolo himself. That is personally why I lost faith in the previous coaching regime. Why it happened I need to let others figure out or as may be the case, never come to understand and just move on.
Your place is valueble for me. Thanks!…

Great Morning All!
Looks like lots a folks had the hamster running in the cranium already.
Maybe the best advice right now is to follow the lead of UHAD Donovan who is OK with a little patience thru the EOY. Things will all unfold quickly as I doubt the offer would have been made to HC Chow based on a promise to come up with a plan of action when he starts…he has to have had that plan pretty firmly envisioned and related such to the committee in order to win the job.
That said…..
AlaWai,
I would like to see a “Rolo Retained” headline right after the New Year as much as you would but after reading that post from SmartFootball I feel that the new HC needs to spend his energy implementing his system directly to the players and not really spend a lot of time with OJT for an OC or Position Coach. This is especially with regard to the run game part of the offense. He may be better served by placing someone already familiar with his system.
How closely does Rolo’s experiences in Europe, JC and elsewhere line him up with that? That’s sure to be discussed when the two of them meet.
So for now I just going enjoy, as the AD says, the great Christmas gift to Hawaii and let the visions of sugar plums, bowl wins, nationally-televised victories and Top 25 rankings dance in my head….
Good morning Tsaikos!!
Nothing personal against your creativity but anything called Chawan would be LAME!! hahahaha
but what do they do here?
D1, I agree.
The coach was hired to do just that, coach. Let him determine who would be best where both in staff and players.
It’s his to design to what he feels would put the product in the best position to accomplish his goals.
Try not to get mad if he does not take your suggestions or accept your opinion (as I assumed papa Leahey was with the UH for not interviewing Miano).
A lot of folks here remind me of the coach and townspeople in Hoosiers who just could not accept the Gene Hackman character who was chosen by the school principal to coach the team.
From the article concerning the Sheraton-Hawaii Bowl and MWC:
“The MWC champion is slotted to play in the Las Vegas Bowl.”
So, in some years UH could possibly play in Vegas twice? Let that sink in a bit…
Wayne, in case you didn’t catch Stretch’s reference: http://warriorbeat.staradvertiserblogs.com/2008/03/13/dan-kelly-chat/.
I think Hawaii in the Las Vegas Bowl absolutely makes sense. That is of course, if we win the MWC. Chow Time baby! Them other teams had better take notice.

Thanks Sting.
