“The University of Hawai‘i Athletics Department has received 42 applications for its vacant head football coach position as of Wednesday afternoon. The recruitment period is continuous and the six-member search advisory committee has begun reviewing applications.”

As for schemes, UH played both a 4-3 and a 3-4 last year.
In the 3-4, depending on the offense’s formation, either Vaughn Meatoga or Kaniela Tuipulotu played the nose.
Anyway, that’s why a big body is a big body, no matter what the front.
With a new head coach from the outside and his own staff coming in are these commitments binding in any way? I take it that once you sign your LOI, it is, unlike verbals. Just wondering because a new HC from the outside might have a completely different criteria for evaluating recruits and the ones signed may not “fit” his talent expectations.
Agree that JD looked very confident and positive yesterday on the TV interviews. I’m confident he’ll choose the best qualified person and not the most popular one.
I am glad the selection committee is considering each candidate and what they have to offer UH. Just gotta be patient and hope the best person out of those applicants will be the right fit.
Very impressed the current staff is still professional enough to continue contacting those still interested being a warrior next season.

I would love to see Jeff Reinebold as HC but I don’t think he applied. He is very loyal to June Jones. I know a lot of you bloggers say you wouldn”t mind seeing the R&S leave. But I’ve fallen in love with it. It’s fantasy football to me. The very thought of throwing the football all the time. Of course it will disappear if a non R&S HC is hired. I wonder if Rich Miano will keep it if he is hired? Mike Cavanaugh is my favorite of applicants. Stern, but his players loved him. I think the fans will love him too. He looked like “Uncle Fester” standing on the sidelines.
Very common for a new HC to come in, evaluate the talent on hand and not renew the scholarships of certain players who may fit into his plans, who won’t see playing time, and would be better off transferring to another school at the I-AA, Div II, NAIA level.

ST: That’s what I thought. Still, got to be a hard sell until UH does name a head coach. Time is of the essence.
Interesting comment about the new UH lineman from Laney JC. He said that the main reason was that the people at UH were very “Chill” and easy going. Being “chill” and laid back has it’s place, but I think part of the problem with recent UH teams has been the lack of intensity and sense of urgency (especially when the clock is running down). Being “chill” is good after a week of intense practice or conditioning drills. JMHO.
Wonder how the local football recruits are looking at all the BCS school applicants for the HC position – must not be all that bad if they chose to apply – something must be positive for UH…
yea, yea, UH is NOT a BCS school and their egos get inflated when recruited by BCS schools – but, as K. Tuiloputu mentioned in an interview, it’s all nice but reality once on campus changes and may not suit the individual

I predict Rich Miano will be named the HC. Or that guy from the NFL? My choice is Mike Cavanaugh. He sends O-lineman to The Nfl regularly, there would be no discipline problems on the team, the R&S will continue. But I feel a little politics is in it and Rich will get it. I got nothing against Miano but with tons of years as associte coach, he hasn’t shown anything special to warrant HC. Cal Lee would be more deserving. A legend in HS football.

PolyMom, i agree that lacrosse is an upcoming sport on the west coast but according to usc assistant athletic director Donna Heinel, they needed a spring sport that could be played on a field that they wouldn’t have to build something new. Lacrosse fit that sport. yeah, they would love to have softball but due to lack of facilities, lacrosse is it.

Everybody needs a good Buzz every once in awhile.
Morn’g it’s Chow time yet?
Seemed to me that the current coaches just wasn’t on the same page, therefore the team looked unorganized. If we keep the same coaches, or maybe I should say hire a hc from within, I think as soon as there are a difference of opinion, then the same thing could happen again. I would like to see a coach from the outside, to see something different as far as coaching practices, game preperation, halftime adjustments, etc.. I still like a variation of the pass, but maybe add a little more running plays. An occasional tight end. Occcasional 2 running backs. I don’t think we’ve seen an end run since the JJ regime started. In JJ’s first year, one of his first recruits, an O lineman, said that UH only had 6 running plays. After, say 13 years, it starts to look old. Imagine what the opponent coaches see. Same thing + even more than we see as far as preparation against us. Maybe that’s why we lose a majority of the 3rd quaters. During halftime, the opponent coaches notice that we are doing the same things as previous years with just a little tweeks, so they adjust and kick out butts. Even the weaker WAC teams seem to come out in the 2nd half and kick out butts.
My Top #1 list for UH head coaching position is one and only Norm Chow:

Norm Chow has been OC since 1996 that’s total of 16 years with BYU, NC State, USC, Tenn. Titans NFL, UCLA and Utah.
Norm Chow has won the Broyles Award as the nation’s Top NCAA assistant coach.
NCAA Division 1-A OC of the Year by American Football Monthly and the National Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Foundation.
Norm Chow is known for developing NFL QB such as Jim McMahon Chicago Bears, Steve Young SF 49ers, Ty Detmer Green Bay, Philip Rivers SD Chargers, Carson Palmer Cincinnati Bengles and Matt Leinart Houston Texans (Colt Brennon high school team mate).
He was the finalist to replace June Jones and should have been.
If Norm Chow was hired back then we won’t be going though all of this now.
The only reason I see that he is not hired as a head coach anywhere is ‘He’s Asian’
Ohh now I’ve said it. But where can he get a chance but back at home where he started in Waialua (my school). Now if you can Win in Waialua Football program, you can win anywhere.

Niumatalolo makes $1.5 million + incentives. If Miano gets the job he’ll make around $500,000. Is Niumatalolo a better coach. You never know unless you have an opportunity to show what you can do. Kenny got the chance. Good for him. Maybe Miano needs somebody who is key in the selection committee to believe in him if he’s the best person to move the program into the MWC and make it better. One thing Kenny did is that he showed Hawaii born head coaches can do good job in college football.
Maybe too old school, but I don’t like the idea of players walking back to the huddle or to the sidelines during the game. In the old days, if you walk, you will see the pine. Same with players not looking at a coach in the eye when being spoken to. Maybe it’s just me.
i don’t think they use the word “hustle” anymore.
Talked with a few friends who are long time season ticket holders. They have varied opinions. Some like Miano because of his energy (seen when he is signaling plays etc.), others like Chow and Akina for name recognition and experience in the “big league”. So many opinions. What a tough job JD has.
I hear Kenny Niumatalolo was contacted by Penn State.
But that will be a tough act to follow.
Staying at Navy will be much more at ease.
jd has the easy job. he just needs to pick a hc. the hc has the tougher job.
so, only a handful of colleges are without a football coach. of course, we would be in this last grouping, this is hawaii, we do things slowly.

I don’t know if this is a good analogy, but there are both pros and cons of staying in one place for your entire career. Take the local TV news here. Joe Moore has worked his entire career here in Hawaii (KGMB, now KHON) and moved from sports to news. Say what you want about JM, but I believe that KHON is still the top rated news. You have others who have gone away and worked on the mainland, some even at the network level like Lara Yamada (KITV), Keahi Tucker & Teri Okita (KGMB) and are very capable news people/journalists. I like also watching Paula Akana (KITV) who has worked all of her career here at home. I also like Shawn Ching.
Anyway, makes for an interesting dialog/debate on whether you need to go elsewhere to gain viable experience in order to be successful once returning home.

Kalani Sitake would be a very interesting hire. The question is, has he applied. The Salt Lake Tribune says no. I think he’s at a point in his career where he should consider becoming a HC.
If Miano doesn’t get the job, will that mean he won’t be coming back? Would the new head coach want to hire someone who was competing for his position in this cut throat arena?
Listened to BC (yes, I occasionally still do that) this morning during his discussion with a writer from LA. They wandered from the main topic to a discussion about why Bob Wagner (w/Paul Johnson) and The Former Coach were motivated to bringing the Spread Option and the R&S, respectively, to Hawaii. It basically boiled down to taking the available talent that Hawaii can get and using it in a system that allows them to compete against bigger, faster, more prototypical “NFL-bound” opponents.
Regardless of the selection that comes out of this process, no one will be able to physically move Hawaii any closer to the mainland and will still have many of the same recruiting challenges. That said, whoever the next HC is will need to be able to structure his system around that fact.
One favorite candidate has a track record of success that depends, IMO, on being the guy with the NFL talent at his disposal. Maybe it would be a good idea to see what was accomplished when the talent level was even or maybe a little in favor of the other guys.
It’s who you know if you want a job…

For certain jobs it’s alright to stay at home… but if your job entails connecting with people all over the USA and possibly the world, maybe.. just maybe, it would be good to go out and spend some time, quality time, with these people in the real world and not just through texts and phone. Build solid bonds of friendship, trust, and communications that becomes part of your network.
Like Coach Mack, Cavanaugh is a loveable asst. coach who has never been a head coach. We’d be rolling the dice once again wouldn’t we? But then again, there’s a number of candidates on the list who are asst. coaches who have never been head man. I just can’t tell you how loveable they were. 🙂

defensively, the team often looked confused as to what sets we were running. that 425 page defensive playbook was too much for any level of play and yet we never adjusted.
i have heard this from very reliable birdies as well as from observations.
i am confident the new regime will correct a lot of these areas.

It is just Uncle Norm would never vocally use the race card to get a job. He just has to much class. Guys like Charlie Strong played that game until he got a Head Coaching job. So to answer Pomai’s question…YES there is still discrimination against Asians and other races. Look at Coaches who have no Poly players? Why? They think Poly players are lazy in school. That is the reason. I know that for fact!

Too much high tech stuff with regards to coaching. If it makes your job easier, then fine. If it’s just cool, then…… I like the old green or black chalk boards. Coaches would sometimes get worked up and punch a hole through it. Woody Hayes once did that and his hand got stuck so he walked out of the locker room with part of a chalkboard in tow. Can’t do that with a white board, though.

Reading Tsai’s article on Lavaka, I am reminded of a great d tackle who will be graduating – Vaughn Meatoga. They both are very comitted to their families. Guys like that generally make good players. Vaughn was awesome, we’ll miss him next year.
What kind of offense would Norm Chow run here? West Coast offense right?
The reason I don’t like Chow is because I saw nothing special in the UCLA, Utah and Tennesse Titans teams where’s he’s been most recently. After running the exciting R&S for the past 12 years, would Hawaii fan base like the change to the more conventional offense?
I really think we need to keep the run n shoot. It brings attention to our QB’s & WR’s because we are always statistically up there in the nation with passing stats.

When June Jones came here, he said that with his R & S offense, UH would automatically attract the Jim Kelly/Jeff George type of passers and the Randy Moss/TO type of receivers.

Norm Chow has his detractors. Have to give him credit for the work he did this season with the Utah backup QB after the starter went down. They won something like 5 games in the second half of the season. The backup was headed to Nebraska-Omaha, but they dropped football, so he ended up at Utah. Chow has a reputation of being a grouch, much like George Lumpkin.

The Run N Shoot has helped keep Hawaii competing for a conference title the past 10 years… UH does not get the players needed to run a pro-style offense. If they were trying to run a system like USC, they would’ve been perennial bottom feeders the past decade. This is also the era of the spread offense in college football… systems like the spread (and R&S) is what gives these mid-major caliber schools a chance to win and compete with some of the big boys.

^they also lost 3 WRs, and a starting HB to the NFL…. all of which were drafted and made their teams. We’re talking like 80% of their offensive production… there is promise in young guys like Trevor Davis, but clearly the offense didn’t have that same kind of talent this year.

#109 Don’t think there is validity to this but I heard on BC show (by a caller) this morning that there is discussion somewhere to buy out JJ’s contract at SMU so that he can come back to UH. If that is true, then JJ becomes a serious candidate. If not, it’s a moot point. Who knows what is really going on. There are so many pros and cons to each coaching candidate. I’m trusting, just like everyone else, that JD, the committee and the other powers that be will make the best decision. From there, it is up to us fans, the university and even the state government to work together and support the football program into being what we all hope and know it can be. Anyways, I read everybody’s posts and have posted a few times. This has been an awesome way for me to get an idea of what is going on with UH football–the community heartbeat, fan support, etc. Thanks to ST and all the usual people who post. There are many like me who read what you all write in this blog. Thanks for letting me share my comments.

Rich Miano has taken the approach that as a recruit you are coming here for the UH experience. You are coming here because Hawaii is a special place. You are coming here for a great education. For those reasons you are coming here regardless of who is head coach.This is the same approach the USC’s, Notre Dames and the like take. Notice USC didn’t lose recruits when Pete Carroll left. Miano trying to change the message that you are settling when you decide to come here. He is thinking big.
Rich is also changing the message that UH is a stepping stone place to coach. He believes UH should not settle for a coach who feels that way. In his own words “This is a destination” job. As fans we should not settle for that stepping stone guy.
With all the head and assistant coaches being cut loose in the NFL and college ranks, you would think one or two of them would entertain an offer from UH. Could there be such a candidate? Hmmm.

Good points. Like I said a couple days ago. If an offensive guy is named HC he will bring in something other than a R&S. I am talking about the likely choices.(not the juco coach). If a defensive guy is chosen HC we will probably go to with a ball control offense. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Come On, Man! June Jone won’t ever come back to be Head Coach at the University of Hawaii. He will pay his dues at SMU or at another college or NFL where he can rake in the cash until he decides to either retire or get fired. He will return to Hawaii and see the sunset at Hokulia on the Big Island where he will live and golf, etc. while returning to Honolulu often to help the University of Hawaii football team in any capacity he can, including fundraising, speaking engagements, coaching clinics, and volunteering his time to help any coach including high school coaches. Any prior Head Coach who is applying for the job probably means that that person was released for fired from their former jobs. That’s par for the course in college football, the NFL, the NBA, and MLB too. At some point, teams have to decide to hire somebody new who does not have Head Coaching job, to give assistants with real life work experience to get promoted. That is what happens in organizations to develop their people and then promote those who have excelled at their jobs and can be leaders or managers of peope.
If somebody who is selected as the Head Coach who is an assistant coach, I don’t have a problem with that. I say give them a chance to see what he can do. We will know soon enough if the decision is right. I think UH was very happy when they selected Dick Tomey who was an assistant at UCLA before he went to Arizona. I think the Green Bay Packers were happy when they got Vince Lombardi who was an assistant coach with the NY Giants and asst. coach at Fordham and Army. I think Boise St. was happy when they promoted Chris Peterson from Off. Coordinator to Head Coach. Real Happy!!!! There are many such success stories like that. To prove it if somebody can do the job, somebody have to give that person a chance.
What bothers me sometimes is that Boise St. is so good. I mean, I don’t see why UH can’t be just as good. The difference to me is coaching, recruiting, play calling and scheming. Boise St. gets very few players from Idaho. Most of their players are from California and they get some from Washington, Texas, and, some other places. Their best player, Kellen Moore is from little Prosser, Washington a very small town in southeast Washinton known as the Tri-Cites area or Prosser, Richland, and Kennewick. Hawaii to me has more pluses than Boise St. The only minus is the distance, but nowadays it’s so easy to travel. I’ve been to Boise, several times. There is no comparison between the Honolulu and Boise, believe me.
I’m still dumb founded at Boise’s success, but I envy them at the rate at which they are winning, even against top schools like Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia Tech, etc. At the upcoming Las Vegas Bowl between Boise St. and Arizona State, the Broncos are favored by 14 points. I think Boise St. will win by at least 20. Moral of the story: UH can be a big winner again with the right coach and recruiting the right players, and some luck. June Jone and the 2007 team led by Colt Brennan showed that it could be done. And yes, they had the luck and they had the good karma and the right schedule. But they made it through to an undefeated season and that is the most difficult thing to do. Just the New England Patriots how hard it is to go undefeated. The GB Packers are now facing it now, as well as LSU. It’s just hard to go undefeated. Just ask the Houston Cougars.

Oregon’s HC, Chip Kelly for Oregon was an OC at IAA New Hampshire just before being hired at Oregon. He had no experience as a HC at the Div I or IAA level. He was relative “no name” candidate at the Div I level. What he has done in his first 3 yrs at Oregon is phenomenal – two-time PAC 10 Coach of the year, 2 Rose Bowls, 3 BCS appearances!
Hope our search/selection committee has the wisdom to emulate a selection such as this from the +30 candidates on their plate.

Todd Graham is full of it. Told the Pitt players that he is committed to bringing a National championship to the city. Asked for a committment from the players, and fleed for the dollars signs when they were presented. Don’t like coaches who aren’t committed, and use schools as stepping stones.

#151 – I work with college coaches all over the country and frankly, that statement is bull. There are more Poly players playing in college than ever before, the numbers have been rising steadily for 10 years. Couple of facts 1) Most East Coast schools dont recruit West. They dont have to, they have Florida and recruit from Texas, on occasion from Cali. I have spoken to coaches from Pitt, Clemson, Maryland, Boston College, Florida State – even Urban Meyer who always recruited Polys when he was in Utah, told me ‘I just dont need to go that far anymore to recruit’. It has absolutely nothing to do with a player being polynesian. 2) Coaches say there is a big difference between California/Hawaii and Samoa Polys. The Cali ones are often thugs (not my opinion, but what I hear from colleges) while the Hawaii and Samoa ones are in general really good kids. 3) It costs a lot of money to recruit Hawaii and Samoa. Most colleges won’t come to Hawaii to recruit one player – unless he has the talent level of Manti. (which is great for UH!). If they play UH, the colleges recruit here. If they have a group of athletes they are looking at, they will come from the MWC, WAC. Then there is the Pac12. 10 years ago, those schools rarely came out. Now they come in droves. And its not because they are lazy, its because they good players and technically sound – and great kids. When we have a good class coming up, like 2013, the coaches just come pouring in. I’ve never, ever heard a general statement ‘lazy in the classroom’ or ‘lazy on the field’ specifically for polynesians. Never.

AL #175 – the fondest memory I have of Jimmy Asato was in a game at the Old Stadium – muddy field. I recall Jimmy was tackled on our 15 or so yard line but skidded to around the 40-45 before his knee touched the ground.
tommy kaulukukui – I had him as my PT teacher at UH; knew him not only as a football coach but also as a U.S. Marshal.
His son Tommy Jr. is one terrific person too!

I think the misguided assumption that all football players are academically lazy just because they are football players (no matter the ethnicity) is more prevalent than certain ethnicities of football players being academically lazy.

Todd Graham is a rotten banana in the eyes of the people at Pitt. He leaves after one year and didn’t even have the decency to meet with his players to tell them that he is leaving for ASU. ASU got what they deserved after dumping JJ. At least Pitt can say good riddance and they probably will sue him since he didn’t fulfill his contract. The following is a quote from their in-house attorney.

#200 That used to be very very true – no matter what race – and it still is to an extent outside the football arena. Used to be ‘the dumb jock’ when there were no NCAA standards and the athletes were just pushed through classes (believe me I went to college with a lot of them, I was a tutor for the athletic department). Now there are standards to be met and most schools are doing a very good job. (most, not all) However, if you ask people who have never been athletes, dont know anything about athletics they think all athletes are dumb jocks and all athletes go to school free, both of which we know are very far from accurate.

Money helps, sure, but Nike still sponsored Oregon w/ plenty moolah before Kelly came on the scene and they did not have the same success. Kelly is a “cutting edge” thinker & that’s what makes his team so hard to prepare for and beat.
Oregon apparently did their homework & took a chance with a “no name” and won. The task at hand is for our search/selection committee to do their homework and find “The One” irrespective of name, title, friend, age, etc.

What’s even more sad is that professors carry this bias. Again, some.. Not all. That can be VERY damaging as these student-athletes already have an uphill academic battle considering their schedules to work out, team meetings, road trips, etc…
The LAST thing a student-athlete needs is a professor already putting the screws, per se, to these kids just because they participate in sports and are getting their education paid for because of sports.
It’s funny because it seems that the professors that do carry the bias against student-athletes extend it to ALL of them no matter the sport, to a certain degree.
Only a small percentage of any given school’s student-athletes will be able to turn pro in whatever sport they participate in so the overwhelming majority, ESPECIALLY the non-revenue women’s sports, will foster their futures in other professional fields which is WHY they are in school in the first place.
Some professors… aren’t that bright afterall.

That may make people happy that he’d do it for less but in the long run, it may backfire. If for some reason he does not pan out, it may be difficult to get another quality coach. Folks may forget about the part that he really wanted to do this and had the financial wherewithal to do it on the cheap, they’d only look at the salary and sday, wow, they’re cheap out there and don’t really care about getting a quality guy.
UH just needs to understand that they need to play BIG to be BIG. If for some reason he is selected, they need to pay him and not go on the cheap simply because he wants to help out.

These days the athletes are the one in the front of the classes, have the homework completed, and have the assigned reading completed, and are taking notes. This occurs in classes that are needed to complete a degree.
Interesting to note that in the early 90’s the NCAA required CC transfers, who did not predict out of high school, to finish an AA degree prior to transfer and participating in NCAA athletics.
After all the heat UH took over the $1.1 million, there’s no way it will ever pay that again.

Maybe he’s aware that Bill Cowher is anxious to get back into coaching and is willing to consider a HC position at the college level. With all of his connections, I would think that he might have some ideas/recommendations.

SDSU is paying quite a hefty entry fee to the Big East (in the form of withheld conference revenue). There is no doubt the college student/athlete experience has improved tremendously since it’s heydays. I just find it disturbing PolyMom has factual proof of programs conducting racial and cultural profiling to exclude Polynesian athletes based on ignorant assumptions. These programs need to be questioned immediately and if found to be true, have their practices brought to a stop!
If true, it’s very appalling that these practices occur in this day and age.
God, I hope not.

Hill was paid $679,000 last year, but Fresno State could have to go higher in pursuit of a new coach. The salaries of the football coaches in the Mountain West are $200,000 to $300,000 higher than in the WAC — Texas Christian’s Gary Patterson is at the high end, at $2,018,362, and Boise State’s Chris Peterson is paid $1,525,000.
Air Force’s Troy Calhoun makes $889,000, Wyoming’s Dave Christensen is paid $843,376 and San Diego State’s Rocky Long is at $801,000. Colorado State coach Steve Fairchild was paid $700,000 before he was fired Sunday.

So long as UH wants to play big boy football, I can not assume that they will NEVER pay 1.1 mil again. Look at the Salaries in the MWC. 800k seems to be the minimal going rate. Auburn’s OC went from making 1.1 as a coordinator to taking a pay cut to coach Arkansas State for 850k. ARKANSAS STATE! College football salaries are rising to astronomical levels throughout the national landscape. How can we be immune to that?
If UH chooses to lowball the next coach, might as well hire Lumpkin or Miano and call it a day. Why go through the motions?
It COSTS to play big boy football. Remember, Nevada’s Chris Ault is not the norm, but rather, an exception — mainly due to his OWN choosing. That will not happen anywhere else, unless you hire the hometown boy or any other no-name coach who will want to take the head coaching title for any price. Surely, my heart is open to miracles and magic. But the law of averages will often play spoiler in many a magical, miraculous moment. And if a coach comes in for a low price and succeeds, you best believe he will be gone soon after. Unless of course, if Hawaii is the only job they ever wanted ;). I hope JD and gang do not chose to play with fire like that.
If 850k is beyond UH’s (and its booster’s) means, then we best accept the fact that we will always be an afterthought. A mid major afterthought.

Never say never to $1.1 mil – not if UH wants to be competitive in Div IA football. Or has the vision now changed to merely have a football team in the MWC & dole out monies to other visiting teams so that they can win championships & we stay home & watch the other teams on TV.
Well at least we know now the salary will not be competitive. That could be why not one known applicant is high profile or is being sought after by anyone to be their head coach. JD is going to have to go with his gut feeling on this one.
Coaching scoop website says Nick Rolovich has an OC offer from another school. If we’re not paying $850K base, we will have to get lucky. I don’t like the idea of hiring a career assistant as a head coach. I think it speaks volumes about a person to have been content being a long-time assistant.
Maybe Rolo already knows who will be the next HC & he ain’t included in the future plan? Or maybe he sees that the UH vision is now mediocrity at the cheapest cost?

I had a coach from USD jump at the chance to recruit a few white guys that were D1 caliper but the mid majors and BCS schools wouldnt touch them. So racial profiling. Yeah it happens. They profile by position, buy the size of the hips, by the size of their ankles, by height, by weight. Where is the proof of an anti Poly movement? Because when USC came here quietly to recruit and no one announced they were in town, they werent only looking the haole or popolo kids only. The RC’s for the pac12 for Hawaii are almost all Polynesian. What schools is she saying does this? Cant be any of the Pac12. Lets see, Boston College doesnt recruit Hawaii or Samoa. Is that proof they are anti Poly? Does she think that schools 5000 miles away should be required to recruit Polynesians, because if so, I got a few white running backs that are being discriminated against too. Have some coaches been quoted as saying ‘we dont recruit Polynesians because they are lazy’ ? If so, it must be public..where is it, I’d sure like to see it.

Those who thought Mack was getting paid too much for what he did for the students and how he assembled his group of coaches got their wish. Mack is gone.. but soon so might some of the favored assistants. Add to that, UH may cut the budget and then we will have the lowest paid coach (adjusted for cost of living) in the MWC with very possibly performance that reflects those cuts.

Problem is.. Mack was responsible for holding our football program together when JJ and so many of the other coaches left ensemble. What he slapped together in 2008 was nothing short of amazing, considering the circumstances… 2009 went as expected… 2010 was actually better than expected, but fans became so spoiled that the loss to Tulsa turned the season against Mack. A 10-4 season but with unhappy fans… go figure. Then of course 2011, with expectations so high, never mind we only had 2 returning starters on Offense… we had all those injuries and didn’t make the bowl.. as such.. aloha Mack.. and here we are…

UHAD Jim Donovan has a history of playing low ball. He did it with Gib Arnold, et al.
He is not a Texas holdum guy.
That doesnt bold well for a football program that is supposed to pull the lion’s share for an overall athletic budget topping $30 million per annum. The basic axiom in business–you get what you pay for–aptly applies to a football CEO. If Donovan hedges his offer and pays small ball to hit the jackpot, he immediately becomes the pinyata if his gamble fails. That comes with risk-outcome decision making. He is signing his own death warrant with a safe political choice.
What is needed in the immediate scenario is recognition skill in selection, imagination and alot of balls.
Donovan cannot hide behind a monolithic commitee while he counts beans. Neither can he go the consensus route to preserve his status.
This is the part of his job description where the rubber meets the road.
This is the intersection in his career where he demonstrates his value or underscores his ineptitude.
This is Jim Donovan’s time alone to shine.
His football head coach selection will define whether his tenure is for the ages or just another transitory appointment that surfaced through the good-ole-boy network.
Jim Donovan has whispered the words many times to shakey program regimes heretofor. And, he must listen intently to what he has said to these walking dead coaches, “Hawaii wants a winner”.
Look, Donovan’s survival chances increase, imho, with more imaginative skill than union politics. This is his kill-shot, hopefully, Jim Donovan takes it!

The Aloha Stadium Authority meets tomorrow morning with a much more detailed agenda than the format used in previous years.
Two of the items in the Stadium Manager’s report to be given by Scott Chan include a legislative tour of the facility by members of the Senate Ways & Means Committee & the House Finance Committee on November 29 AND a meeting with Senator Glenn Wakai, a couple of other area legislators along with several people from the City’s Department of Planning & Permitting on November 23 about the potential for Transit-Oriented Development on the entire Stadium site. The people who’ve spent the past 19+ months working on these issues did not get identified.
The five potential economic (re)development projects proposed by dedicated UH supporters include:
High-tech business park primarily for mature companies primarily working in renewable energy, bio-medical research, Department of Defense programs;
Mid-range hotel primarily for visiting teams & fans as well as for people visiting family members or conducting business on nearby military bases;
International sports venue both inside Aloha Stadium itself – soccer, rugby, American football, track & field events – as well as outside the Stadium – tennis, aquatic activities, vehicular racing + a family-oriented mini-golf course;
Multi-family workforce rental housing directly related to Transit-Oriented Development;
Small-footprint commercial & retail center including food-service businesses and a multi-story parking garage for transit users, residents, employees, customers, and Stadium patrons.

What hurts the program most with a low HC salary won’t be the quality of the head coach. It will be the quality of the assistants, the coaches who are actually doing the coaching. Say Miano is the head coach and selects Rolo as the OC and has a salary of $150,000. Three years from now if the offense is tearing things up and someone offers Rolo $300,000, he’s gone.
I thought Favid Graves said Mack wasn’t really doing anything as a head coach? To me he made a free 4-4.5 million dollars! I wish I was in a position like that. Crap I would take 4.5 million to fail. That would be awesome!

If memory serves, in the negotiations of salary for a two year extension for Mac, the figure of $750,000 was bantered about. Coach Mac was looking for $850,000.
Since this is a matter of public record, I’m sure that the applicants know the general range of what UH might want to pay.

We need a coach that will make us forget about watching football on PPV and come down to Aloha Stadium to cheer our hearts out. Coach Mack was nice. What we need now is excitement. I hope we can find a good one out of the 42 coaches applying for the job.

We have allowed those wanting to doom the UH Football program to work their evil by calling for a new coach and disparaging Coach Mac. So here we are. No dream Coaches have applied because there is no money and they know that they will have to win 10 games plus every year to make the crybaby “fans” happy and to keep the barbarians at bay. Why would anyone even consider moving their family to Hawaii to get the same treatment that was given Coach Mac and his family? For just $400,000? These evil people blame the losses and Coach Mac for waning attendance to the games. Come on! Have any of you been tailgating? Yes? Then you are all aware that the security has bullied people all year. They have been clamping down on underage drinking, arresting the young people and trespassing them for a year. That is why the students are not coming anymore. They are afraid of getting hassled and arrested. Why should they go somewhere where they are despised and they are not wanted. I don’t support underage drinking but remember, the highest gates were in the 80’s when the drinking age was still 18. Coach Mac and his coaches have done a great job of stocking the team with talent. I’m sure some of you recall me raving about Scott in one of my previous posts, but to tell you the truth, Scott may not even be the best returner on our team. This coming year he will have to fight off stiff competition from Braydon Torres and Samson Anguay, two speedsters who have that special vision needed to break big return runs. Yes, Coach Mac has seen to it that we have a lot of talent. We know Davis is going to be special, but wait until Cecil Doe starts contributing next year, we will be a force. The only thing we are missing is a Quarterback like Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow is THE extreme winner. If we had Tim Tebow on our team we would have gone 13-0 this year. Of course it would be almost impossible to get someone as good as Tebow, but we need to find someone that has a percentage of what Tim has. All we need and needed was a winner to tie everything together.

Would those same current players be willing to snap to when told by Miano to run off the field, into the huddle, go back to the drawing board and wrap up when tackling (not what we’ve seen), play disciplined ball, pay attention on the sidelines, etc.?
If it was rumored that it was not there and the new recruit said he liked the “laid back” atmosphere, which seemed to be the bane of many of th posters during the season (no sense of urgency), would that continue as the philosophy or would there be more discipline and fundamental ball from Manoa?
If this was the culture of the current players, can Miano change the culture to become more disciplined?

I believe the laid back remark was made in conjunction with recruiting, not the game itself. Miano did remark that he would enact a more disciplined approach to practice and the game. He has also said privately there would be a more disciplined approach to recruiting.

however, you have a new dc, for example, you noticed that there is a higher degree of discipline. you have two choices hunker down or walk out of the room.
one of the things many have observed is that in the jj and mack eras we did have problems tackling. these same folks believe that the “pro style” practicing methods just did not work with young college boys who often did not have proper techniques. but, instead of actually doing it they envisioned it. come game time the results were evident.
miano says he’ll keep a few of the younger guys who will have to recruit on his staff. everyone will recruit he says. does this mean that he’ll only keep rolo, tuioti, and smith?

Whitey #347 I have a ASPIC (?) white shirt with the “H” logo and Wahine volleyball shirt – which you can get from the Wahine volleyball booster club. I don’t think it is available elsewhere – think Rainbotique only handles Underarmour stuff. The UnderArmour people also have made the green shirts that have Wahine Basketball and Wahine Softball booster shirts.
As for the last two, I think that only the respective booster organization have them. I agree that those shirts should be available for sale to the general public.
The problem is that if it were available, it probably would have to go through the Rainbotique and when those are sold that way, the moneys doesn’t go to the Athletic Department but to the UH general funds.
You might check with POMAI or KELVIN about the Wahine softball shirts.

As I posted earlier, I think that Rocky Seto, as Polymom said, is underutilized now. He was a linebackers coach, then secondary, and finally defensive coordinator at USC and after turning down Steve Sarkisian’s offer to become DC at UW, he chose to stay loyal to his school. Next, Uncle Pete bolts to the Seahawks and Seto is now out of a job with Lane Kiffin bringing his dad as DC at USC. Seto takes a quality control job with the Seahawks that pays him a tenth of what he last earned at USC and would have made had he taken the UW DC job.
It would be great to have Norm Chow (if he’s hired) bring Seto to UH as his DC. Lots of energy, enthusiasm, a great teacher of technique and fundamentals, and he has a good rapport with his players.

I really hope if Rolo is kept he will have a huge say as to who his assistants are. Letting him have free reign of the offense with coaches who are not on his page would spell another frustrating season for Rolo and the fans.

Asics is one of the top volleyball brands and they sponsor the Wahine volleyball program, however I thought Under Armour makes their booster club shirts, unless yours is an older shirt i.e. pre 2008.
From what I have seen, all booster polo shirts are handled by Under Armour, even the Basketball booster clubs even though Addidas is the primary sponsor of Rainbow Warrior Basketball and Under Armour partially sponsors Rainbow Wahine Basketball (pre game warm up clothes, shorts, and shoes).
Football and Softball are primary Under Armour sponsored programs as far as the uniform and apparel for the players and coaches are conceded and Rainbow Baseball is pretty much completely sponsored by UA as well by now as they just got full UA uniforms last season. They’ve had their cleats and under gear prior.
It was in the best interest of support that softball booster club went with Under Armour as they have taken care of the Rainbow Wahine for the majority of their needs (gloves, helmet, bats, and other protective equipment supplied by Easton).
Rainbowtique will being selling their spring sports apparel as usual in January. Right now they are trying to expel their fall stock.
Hello, I’d like to introduce myself. I am an applicant for the UH football coaching position. I have been secretly scouting this blog and others over the past two years to gauge the type of fan interest and support I would get should I be selected head coach of the Warriors.
I can already tell that for some of you, I will be able to do and say whatever I want, and you will shower me with overly positive, sometimes unnecessary commentary and optimism. While others may try to hold me accountable for my mistakes, yet will have little success on this blog, as your comments will be criticized, condemned, and shot down like pheasant during hunting season in South Dakota.
Anyway, I am glad to have had the opportunity to introduce myself. I have yet to receive any indication from the selection committee regarding my application, but hope they contact me soon. I hope the fact that I submitted my application anonymously doesn’t hinder my chances.

Correct about the booster polo shirt sales. Rainbowtique makes them for us at “cost” and for our members we offer them at a significantly cheaper price than the regular price of a UH UA polo (average cost between $65.00-85.00) with a part of the price we “charge” going to the cost and the rest going back to the program’s booster account.

I don’t know . . . Miano has been a part of the laid back “pro style” practice for a long time now. You can’t tell me that if he wanted more discipline and attention to detail from his group that he wouldn’t have implemented it. I can’t see a HC telling him “hey, take it easy on those guys . . . we don’t do that around here.” I could be wrong though. If he wanted a more disciplined group, then he should have coached it. He has been a coach for a long time at Hawaii.

The football program is on solid ground when the team can just “reload” rather than “rebuild”.
A good program is good every year and consistently gets to a bowl game. You have to remember, other teams are trying to win too, every week. To have a winning record is an achievement, 7 to 8 games. Win 9 or 10 games a year is excellent, win 11 or 12 games is elite. Go undefeated 13-0 is BCS worthy. Win the BCS game and finish 14-0 is out of this world even National Championship worthy. At least in the discussion. To have a solid program we have to consistently recruit the high majority of players from high school seniors and by position needs. Good coaches know developing depth is a big key because they have to be prepared in case of injuries. Thus, good coaches play a lot of players including underclassmen. If recruiting is good, players who are freshman and sophomores are good enough to play manu minutes, including starters. Show me a team laden of senior starters and show me a drop off the following year most of the time.
A good meal is one that tastes good.
A great beverage is one that also tastes good.

al, “nfl” type practices created the poor tackling and blocking. in college, it is still olf fashion football practice, full gear 4 days. you would think that watchiing game movies would help them see their tackling mistakes, but it was neva corrected while jj and mack was here.

I have to say im liking the recruiting approach Miano is taking. He had 3 ohio kids visit with one of them being the 5 star commit. should help maybe persuade the others to follow. Im really high on the kid Sean Draper tall corner at 6-1. havent seen any video of Willie henry but he is rated 3 stars and has 7 offers. Also Miano has Jeremiah poutasi 4 star out of nevada visiting this weekend. Sounds like the guy is not just talking!

Its concerning that our financial situation is so dire that we can’t afford to pay a rate that equals to what most MWC schools are paying for their coaches.
Is this in anticipation of the loss of PPV and travel subsidies? How are the talks with the HVCB going about having them help pay for a portion of those subsides?
Post 2007 and going to the MWC was supposed to be such a wonderful and exciting time for our program. A new era.

Of the known candidates, there are a couple who could do the job well. Nuff said.
I can’t shake the feeling that the comittee and the UHAD have some tricks up their sleeves regarding both potential candidates and the resources to pay for a good coach.

You gotta put your money into your money maker. You can’t just keep sucking funds out of it.. gotta put enough back to keep it growing… and that means that those funds need to keep growing, especially in tight times. When the economy sucks, ticket sales may drop but more people are going to those PPV places and tuning in on the radio… these people will return when the economy starts to right itself, but if you cut back and produce a mediocre program, you can kiss them goodbye.

We’ve lost our way. There’s a way to express disagreements and voice opinions, but we’ve digressed. We used to be people who were respectful of others. We’re not anymore. It’s very disappointing.
Thanks for the insight Stephen. Performance Coach is right. There are alot of cry baby fans and many who disparaged Coach Mack. The problem is not Mack; it’s us, the cry baby fans and negative posters.
I was one of those that were very sad to see Coach Mac let go. I’m still down about it.
Those other issues with tailgating and the students getting arrested and taking their parties elsewhere have nothing to do with Coach Mack but everything to do with attendance. A poor economy with PPV and greater access to free or low cost viewing will guarantee attrition as well. You can argue all you want that there is nothing like being there, but they guy at home with his favorite drink and his favorite pupus watching instant replay on his 60″ screen, will probably just shake his head. Same with the guys at a favorite watering hole with a dozen of his drinking pals. Closer to home where a taxi ride is a lot cheaper, too. Round trip to and from the stadium at $4.00 a gallon doesn’t help.
The the talent, like Performance Coach has pointed out is there.. ready to hit the turf. Too bad the guy who led the program to recruit all that talent won’t be there to lead them onto the field. The greater impact of Coach Mack we might not see for a few years.. The next two years should be rather successful years for any coach with a good play book. It’s what follows that, that merits early scrutiny.
Anything less, would indicate failure in the hiring process.

The best way to be respectful is to follow it up by calling people crybabys.
Not that people care what I have to say . . . I have posted my share of criticism, but like to think that I have done so respectfully. Some may disagree, as often times things I have posted may have been misconstrued, especially comments in jest.
There is a distinct division on this blog between those who claim to be 100% supporters or real Warrior fans and those that said supporters consider crybabys because they voice different opinions (some more reasonable than others). Sometimes it can get pretty ugly, but it shouldn’t.

I think it was Pride that posted UH averaged 40-points per game in 2010, and Moniz led the nation in passing yards and touchdowns.
2011, with horrible play at offensive line, offense still scored 31 points per game, and let’s face it, we all saw Mack and his game mis-management malfunctions.

I really don’t care what anybody says or thinks about McMackin. He’s a grown man.
But I am mindful that players, parents and coaches are reading this blog. So, a player makes a life decision to leave his family and attend UH. He speaks highly of the people of Hawaii. And then he reads the comments on the blog, about how people feel he’s a bust because some scouting-service guys don’t give him a high enough rating. (And, by the way, I do know those scouting guys.) And then I have to explain to the guy that, yep, one of his biggest critics is a UH employee.
People can say whatever they want to say. Most posters are great. There just seems to be a lot of anger lately.
I honestly can’t tell you if he applied.
The sticking point was the MQ: Needed five years of coaching.
But I think the desired qualifications over-ride that. Plus, he should have that number: a year at CCSF, four at UH.
Rolo would be a good one.
I like all of the candidates but one. There is one who would be an absolute dud. But I don’t get a vote, so it doesn’t matter.
Generally posters want what best for UH. Many use this blog as a box they can drop their suggestions, complaints, observations and heads up type info.
It’s been stated and restated that coaches and athletes may or may not read ths blog but many of their family and friends do. People’s feelings matter on this small island. What many think is constructive criticism or educated observations borders on “talkin stink.”
We all want whats best for UH and voice what we think is best. But we should heed the great philosopher from the comic strip Pogo….we have met the enemy and he is us..

ST, gotta agrree! The content his gotten nasty alot this year. I only read the blog and rarely post. I skim over the bad and read the good posters. The topice was great in the beginning and slowly a mutation occurred over the years. But the main thing that is constant, it is the blog host and THE WARRIORS. I look forward to the HIRE and will be with the Warriors in the north endzone again next year.

Opinion.
The problem is not coaching or talent. It’s attendance. Not just in football but all revenue producing sports.
Winning may or may not be the solution. If winning were the only solution then how many wins will solve our attendance problems?
I feel the AD should put more resources into researching attendance from a sociological point of view. Find out how big a part of a person’s social life is attending UH athletics. They should try and get a handle on the percentages.
If I were the AD, I’d fund a study to get a handle on how large our fan base is and who it is.
Fan base defined as anyone who has attended an event in the last two years, anyone who watches TV events or listens on the radio or follows via other media. Find out how big our out of state Fan base is.
Information can lead to more targeted marketing. Brainstorming for marketing ideas without information on who you are targeting is shoting in the dark.

Simple fact. IF a team loses, the head coach is culpable. That is just the name of the game we play. WE underachieved as a team and lost the fans. And because of such, Coach Mack is gone. Pau already. We need to move on.
The blog has gotten this way because of everything going on. Trust me, had we won 9-11 games and was preparing for the Hawaii bowl, the blog would have been overflowing with cheer and goodwill. It’s pretty obvious.
