Final seeding scenarios

Now that we’ve entered the final day of the Big West regular season, some of the convoluted seeding scenarios are finally a little more clear. All will be known after tonight.

First, on the men’s side:

UH can finish as either the No. 5 team or the No. 6.

UH will be the fifth seed if UC Davis loses at home to UC Irvine. In which case UH (10-8) will play the Anteaters (11-7) in the 4-5 matchup.

UH will be the sixth seed if UC Davis defeats UC Irvine. That would create a three-team tiebreaker at 10-8 between Davis, UCI and UH. UH gets the worst seed (6) of the three because of its 1-3 record against the other two.

UH’s opponent as the sixth seed would be either Pacific or Cal Poly. If Pacific wins at home today against Long Beach State, Poly remains the 3 seed and UH’s opponent in that scenario. If Pacific loses and it and Poly finish tied at 12-6, Poly wins that tiebreaker and moves up to No. 2, and it’s UoP that would play UH in the 3-6 game.

Now, on the women’s side:

UH can do no worse than third place, win or loss today against Cal State Fullerton on senior night.

The Rainbow Wahine (12-5) can finish in a tie for first place if both Cal Poly (13-4) and Pacific (13-4) lose today, but the No. 1 seed is out of reach because Cal Poly wins the tiebreaker by virtue of a home-and-home sweep of Pacific.

So the No. 2 seed is the best possible scenario for UH here. That happens if UH wins tonight and Pacific loses at UC Davis; UH bests Pacific in a tiebreaker and gets a double bye to Friday’s semifinals at the Honda Center.

If Pacific wins or UH loses tonight, UH stays at No. 3 and gets a single bye to Wednesday’s second round played at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center.

There, everyone got all that? Simple, right?

    As a #3 Seed (Tied for Conference #2 !)
For NA WAHINE starting a day Earlier against a “weaker” opponent (5, 6, 7, 8)
Getting “Neutral Court” Acclimated sounds preferable to Starting “Cold” on Day 3 of The Tourney…
(Although should be better Next Year when they have More Depth & Height…)

For the Men, UCIrvine, that Hawaiʻi played within Four Points @Irvine is probably a better match-up than either blow-out foes Cal Poly or UC-Davis….Might Be Good Fortune…
GET A Good WIN Under their Belts, Get Acclimated to the Neutral Court and Hawaiʻi could be Hazardous to Two or Three Teams…
