5-star cornerback picks UH … for now

Justin “J.T.” Turner, a former 5-star cornerback from Ohio, has given a conditional verbal commitment to the Warriors.

Turner made his commitment this afternoon, shortly before leaving Hawaii after completing his recruiting trip, but is awaiting the status of the UH coaching staff. Turner is close to Tony Tuioti, UH’s defensive line coach.

Turner was considered to be one of Ohio’s top high school players as a senior. He signed with Michigan, but left after failing to get along with then-head coach Rich Rodriguez. He attended West Virginia for a semester before enrolling at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Junior College. He is 6 feet 3, 200 pounds and runs 40 yards in under 4.5 seconds.

UH cornerback Mike Edwards, also from Ohio, was instrumental in Turner’s decision.

* * * * *

Even including the injuries and several gritty individual performances, by all measures, this was a disappointing season for the Warriors.

Despite entering the year with two returning starters on offense β€” both of whom ended the year injured β€” there was optimism, as reflected in the Warriors being picked first in WAC preseason polls.

There were Warriors who fought the good fight. Long-snapper Luke Ingram played the entire season with a shoulder that likely will require offseason surgery. The same for cornerback Mike Edwards. The linebackers also endured injuries to play every snap yesterday. Quarterback David Graves, wideout Trevor Davis and slotback Justin Clapp were force-fed into starting roles.

The Warriors crafted a list of goals, the most basic was to finish with a winning record. In a glum post-game interview, head coach Greg McMackin acknowledged the Warriors did not meet their goals.

McMackin has a little more than a year remaining on a five-year contract whose terms were reached in January 2008. His situation will be discussed soon, although no meetings are scheduled for today. UH President MRC Greenwood, who is expected to be involved in the evaluation, is attending meetings on the mainland.

The seniors should be congratulated for their efforts on the field and in the classroom. Every player has either graduated or is on track to earning a degree. Developing players (Brian Clay, Tavita Woodard, Craig Cofer, Beau Yap, Desmond Dean, Stump Godfrey) offer optimism.

The future of the program should gain clarity, either way, this week.

Prayers for our good friend, Las Vegas/Rasu Begasu, who is suffering from a critical medical condition. He is a kind and generous man who always maintains the aloha spirit in the desert. He also has been a source of wisdom and, more importantly, good humor, especially during the blog’s after-hours period.

My two teams…..Warriors and MN Vikings. Needless to say, 2011 has not been a good football season for me. My son was born in September so there were other things occupying my mind and heart. In the end, it all balanced out. Good luck to the graduating warriors. Mahalo for your contributions. For the ones remaining, work hard and keep your heart open. Greater years await.

There were about six recruits at the game, including two really large JC guys.

One said his preference is to come to UH, because “his girlfriend” is from Hawaii. But he wants to take his other visits, including a trip to Miami.

There will be no commitments until is is decided, either way, about the leadership of the program for 2012.

  23. Old Diver December 4, 2011 9:06 am

I think the lobbying should start immediately for next year on 1. Not having consecutive road games, 2. Not having one month gaps between home games, 3. Not having 22 minute gaps during a game.

Not trying to skirt BigIslandKurt’s injunction, but what is the story behind the reason why Cal Lee is NOT in the recruiting process? Seems to me that he would be a natural for local recruiting.

  26. Dan-O December 4, 2011 9:08 am

Depending which way a decision goes this week, it may set the program back a couple of years.

  27. Stephen Tsai December 4, 2011 9:09 am

    tom mui:

Oh, I’m pretty sure I know what they’re going to do, and I have an idea when they’re going to do it (which is why I canceled my upcoming medical procedure).

But on that 10-percent chance things don’t go as expected, I’m keeping my options open.

  28. Old Diver December 4, 2011 9:09 am

Can I take it the recruiting trips by the coaching staff outside of Hawaii which was to begin immediately have been cancelled?

  29. Old School Dave December 4, 2011 9:10 am

Hats off to the seniors and to the entire team for their hard work, sweat, and tears. Good to hear that all are on track to getting their degrees.

  30. Stephen Tsai December 4, 2011 9:12 am

    Re: Cal Lee

He handles a portion of local recruiting, but not all of it.

I think each coach gets an area.

After that, it goes to the position coach.

So, if the DB coach finds an offensive tackle he likes, he then refers the player to the O-line coach.

    At least that’s my understanding.

I was trying to figure out which recruit went with which coach, but it was during the senior ceremony, and the coaches were on the greeting line.

  31. d1shima December 4, 2011 9:13 am

    Have a terrific day erryboddy.

I woke up this morning to a terrific sunrise and will be off to remind myself, “Lucky you live Hawaii.”

    Old Diver:

It’s business as usual until it’s not business as usual.

The HC has a year remaining on his contract unless told otherwise.

No matter what happens, the recruiting process keeps going on, especially since there are a couple of prospects who would be eligible to join in January.

  33. Stephen Tsai December 4, 2011 9:18 am

    I’m flying solo this week.

Like most of us, Ferd had no doubt UH would be going to the Hawaii Bowl. Back in April, he made vacation plans for this week.

Congratulations to the student-athletes! I’ll see the graduates at the ceremonies. So proud of you guys for making it through school.

Looking forward to a high level of play next season.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  36. Stephen Tsai December 4, 2011 9:32 am

No matter what happens this week, there are likely be changes.

Inoke Funaki’s GA arrangement expires at the end of the month. He was told it could be extended, for a third season (the NCAA limit), but, of course, that depends on what happens this week.

The other GA also is finishing his tenure.

And, of course, the two long-time managers, Kyle and Jacki, will be graduating.

  37. tommui December 4, 2011 9:34 am

    ST re #27

DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT cancel any medical procedure unless it is a toe-nail or some such.

  38. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 4, 2011 9:34 am

We fans sitting on the mauka side of the Stadium watching last night’s sunset was incredible. I hope that someone at ESPN got a shot or two of it before the night fell onto the earth.

For those of you who are interested in getting your ideas taken into consideration about changes in the football program, I urge you to write them down, sign your real name, provide contact information, and send the letter to the appropriate decision-makers: The UH President, the Board of Regents, the Manoa Chancellor, and the Director of Athletics. Making anonymous posts of blogs will barely make a dent in what will happen over the next week or so. Ferd and Dave’s columns will make a difference, but hearing from UH supporters is more important than anything a journalist can say.

Have a wonderful life, Seniors. Fifty years from now, please come back & share your memories with the Class of 2061.

I don’t think that Arizona State will hire JJ, no matter what those reports say. Those Arizona radio guys who said that JJ met with Arizona State for a long time today do not seem credible to me…SMU is hosting a LOT of 3-star and 4-star recruits today and one of them committed to JJ today–a 3-star WR who had offers from Colorado, Georgia Tech, and many other schools.

    SMU now has 21 commits.

Just speculating couple thoughts especially since this rumor is out lol —

    – If the rumour were true, perhaps it’s just an indication that JJ is still very serious about coaching. No matter whatever venue it may be, i think recruits might highly consider following the coach they believe in and not necessarily the notoriety of the particular school.

    – If the rumour is not true, perhaps it’s a super huge thunderously big hint hint hint from someone up there out there that JJ might possibly would could entertain a return to our beloved UH football program he once cherished and helped build? πŸ™‚

    – Perhaps the UH admin and ties et al could possibly rediscover JJ’s wants and needs, fix ’em quick, and beg beg beg deeply for his return, and promise a million trillion billion times never ever to do from his don’ts list ever ever again, amen?

    πŸ˜‰

  45. Old School Dave December 4, 2011 9:53 am

Speaking of the weight room, I was impressed with the size and physicality of the BYU receivers and defensive backs compared to those of UH.

From N’West Florida: Thanks to ST and all the Tsaikos for keeping us up to date on Warrior football happenings. Hope someone is chronicalling the rise and determination of the TSaikos, so that when we have discussions 20 years from now, we will be able to compare and contrast with other social media, virtual fan clubs from around NCAA FB. If we miss out on the history of the Rise of the Tsaikos, it will be like missing a part of Hawaii and UH history. God Bless All! Merry Christmas!

  48. shoichi84 December 4, 2011 9:56 am

I’m going to throw my support behind keeping McMackin on board for at least the next season – hopefully they can agree to a reduced pay scale – for the following reasons:

-This season was full of adversity: replacing the entire offense, playing 3 home games in the first two month of the season, and the pile-up of injured players was a lot to overcome for any coach.

-The lack of success for this seasons offensive unit is being judged against unrealistic expectations. Of course this is in hindsight, but I think it should have been more obvious before the season started that this offense would struggle. How is an offense that returns only two starters and loses 4 players to NFL training camps supposed to just continue ticking along?

-We shared the WAC title last year. I think it takes a very fickle fan base to want to fire a coach a year after winning the conference championship. Especially for a school like the University of Hawaii, for which conference championships are very few.

-He is being judged against unfair expectations for the program. Many Hawaii fans now think that, because we went to the Sugar Bowl in 2007, we should now be dominating our conference every year and that we can expect our program not to have any down years. These fans need a wake-up call and need to look at the reality of our program. While facilities and spending have improved, there is still a large gap between the financial commitment our school makes to athletics and what other more consistently successful schools make. Plus, this spending does not have an instant impact on the program; it’s not like for every dollar spent this year on the program you can expect to see an instant return for that dollar next year. It takes a long-term and consistent commitment to take an athletics program to the next level.

-This coaching staff is still growing, but shows promise. Remember that, despite Coach Mac’s extensive coaching experience as a defensive coordinator, this is still his first head coaching job. Coach Rolo and Aranda are very young, and are still learning the ins and outs of their positions. I don’t know how many of us can say we just walked into our positions and were great and efficient at it. The same is true for coaching. What (especially the two coordinators) have shown us is that they have the commitment and are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to become a good coach. I believe both coordinators have made great strides since they started, and will continue to grow if given the time.

-Due to my two previous points, I’m not sure that we could find anything better. It’s not like great coaches with great credentials are going to be lined up out the door if UH puts out an add for its head coaching job.

Mainly, I believe that coaches and team will improve. I believe that this season was the exception and that we can’t make rash reactions. If we give coach Mac one more year then we can figure out whether this seasons lack of success was due to superficial problems or structural problems. It would be a shame if we decided to burn the house down because of some chipped paint.

  49. Eric December 4, 2011 10:01 am

shoichi 84 – congratulations on passing probation. You are now a tsaiko.

  55. Hillmok December 4, 2011 10:34 am

Shoichi, well said. Hopefully the next decision will be unlike the first and well thought through. On another note: recruiting good players brings wins, sells seats, and improves facilities, I think answering that question may be the biggest challenge. Is it as simple as “build it and they will come?” a lot of schools looking to survive in this ever changing landscape of college football seems to think so.

OK, you’ve got serious lumpia cravings! They were the stick in the oven at 425 for 10-12 minutes kind. Chicken and veggie filling was pretty good. Loompia brands. They make pot stickers too, but I used a different brand for those, also pretty good for the money.

  57. Willie December 4, 2011 10:43 am

A lot of the young players that got PT this year looked good and provide positive optimism for next year.

Looking at the SA this morning brought forth some stat info that is not positive and I think will weigh in the coaching decision. Warriors got one great quality win on the road against La Tech. Here is the rest of the 5 “W” info, strength of schedule gotta be very low.

Colorado last in Pac 12 South, UC Davis last in GWC, NMSU 2nd to last in WAC, Idaho last in WAC, Tulane last in CUSA West.

  58. wafan December 4, 2011 10:43 am

Tough call. Both sides have valid arguments. But if UHAD has to be run as business . . .

Glad I am not the one who will be responsible for the final decision. We need to let those who are paid and responsible for making the decisions, make the decisions.

If a player keeps making mistakes, why are our coaches leaving them in?

Or are they supposed to be making those mistakes?

    I’m so confused πŸ™

    UHfan808:Β

    December 3rd, 2011 at 5:58 pm

We have many coaches but the head coach, the assumed designated head leader, is responsible for setting the tone for the success of the entire team.

The University of Hawaii is a higher learning institution.

Like other discipline’s students, football players too take what they’ve learned throughout their lives and go there to learn and what it takes to get to the next level.

That said, if football is akin to a field of study, the coaching team should be teaching its students, the players, how to play all aspects of the game and at a higher level.

    So I’m confused.

We have talented players who do many wonderful and amazing football things on the field.

Yet week after week game after game I’ve not witnessed very much progression in learning by these talented players.

(Just like a mirror,) Students naturally should (be able to) count on their teachers for instruction, coaching, evaluation, and correction.

If one measurement of learning success is thru (witnessing/validating) progression with each game, but same errors happen every game or throughout the season from beginning to end, then is it the player who is not learning, or the coaches who are not teaching and are they even teaching properly???

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Disappointing season, but I’m not ready to see Mack go yet.

Thanks to all for a great tailgate season, especially the early morning crew. Yesterday’s t-gates were da best! Hopefully next year we can return to the upper pavilions.

    GO WAHINE!!

There’s something very wrong with the process when the #1 and #3 ranked teams are meeting in the round of *16*.

  69. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 4, 2011 11:19 am

    shoichi,

lots of teams have to play through adversity and injuries. How come we have to be the only non-BCS school to have gone BCS bowling to not raise our level of expectations for our program? Let some other program be that black sheep.

The way we lose, the dozen eggs we laid in the 2nd half of the game, the strange game management decisions. Enough is enough.

Fans have lost confidence in the program and the HC and AD are the captains of that ship.

Hopefully a big change is coming, but I have an odd feeling that we will see Mack back for one last year.

  70. LizKauai (iPad) December 4, 2011 11:20 am

“The seniors should be congratulated for their efforts on the field and in the classroom. Every player has either graduated or is on track to earning a degree.”

Congratulations to the Warriors for achieving this goal!!!

Blessings, positive energy and warmest aloha to rasu begasu- who is the essence of what is means to be a Tsai-ko.

I think SMU fans are flooding the comment section lol.

  73. A-TEAM December 4, 2011 11:24 am

Well said #48-Shoichi84, Let coach Mac finish his contract. From what I recall, the recruiting Class of 2010 is his first complete recruiting class. A lot of those guys with exception of Shigamatsu, got in the rotation and became starters, saw playing time or even got activated late in the season. They became contributors.

With a new coach (unless its from inhouse) that will defeat the purpose why they committed to UH, that can change things. Warriors fans must be patient. Look at what Harbaugh did to Stanford……Looking forward to 2012….

  74. Dan-O December 4, 2011 11:28 am

My question is….what is taking so long to make a decision? Regardless of last night’s outcome, “upper management” should have already mapped out contingency plans. Playing out the different scenarios (if we won and went to a bowl), there should have already been a proactive plan to move forward.

Success comes from the top….strong leadership is void in the whole system.

Shoichi (#48), ditto. They are detractors but I believe as you do.

  80. Stephen Tsai December 4, 2011 11:48 am

OK, here’s the deal. There are mostly intelligent people here. It’s no secret what’s brewing. Will it actually happen? Odds are most likely, but there are a lot of other factors involved, as well as a lot of people in the mix. I couldn’t even give you percentages.

If they do decide to do something, I have a strong idea which direction they will go.

That said, there are recruits still in town. There’s a banquet tonight. While there’s a possibility there might be a meeting today, there won’t be any decisions made today. Maybe tomorrow. Or the next day. Maybe never. But, for sure, nothing today.

If Mack is out I hope they have a plan that can be executed quickly to get a new coach in before Christmas. A plan where they have names and numbers and not just an open search.

If Mack is still in, I would like to see more “full-time” assistant coaches on staff.

  91. bigislandkurt December 4, 2011 11:59 am

I don’t think all the “let mack finish his contract” folks truly understand how the game of college football recruiting works.

I was completely on board with the Mack hire. It didn’t take too long for me to realize that like many fans at the time I was caught up in the madness (and emotions) of the sugar bowl destruction an jj’s subsequent departure. Over the past four seasons, i tried to remain optimistic about mac and his headcoaching abilities. Time has ran out for me. He’s just not a good head coach. Time for a GOOD change. Not just change for change sake.

JJ is not coming back anytime soon.

    How do I know this?

    I asked him.

    He said: No.

Even if they keep Mack, UH probably wants to reduce the salary for the next head coach’s salary to the $500,000 to $700,000 range.

JJ left here at $800,000. (And, of course, UH wanted $400,000 back after the Sugar Bowl.)

  94. Ralph December 4, 2011 12:00 pm

    On a Brighter note! Hail to K State…. πŸ™‚

Volleyball team defeated #2 ranked and seeded Nebraska on Friday to earn a trip to Honolulu this week’s regional.

The football team is 10-2. What is of interest here is that their coach who retired several years ago was re hired after a 3 year retirement. K State had hired a coach on a 5 year deal, but after 3 seasons and non of them losing season with only one bowl game K State fired him and the athletic director who gave him an extension and re hired Bill Snyder.

Winning fills seats, encourages boosters to donate money to the college in general, creates community excitement and winning helps with recruiting to win on a consistent basis.

There will be less money available in 2012.

    Travel subsidies must be paid.

I don’t know of anyone personally who got a fatter paycheck from APEC.

  102. Stephen Tsai December 4, 2011 12:13 pm

By the way, it doesn’t bother me about what anybody says about a coach. They’re grown-ups. They can take care of themselves.

But I’d cool it on criticizing players. Players and their families read this blog. It’s just not cool for them to receive criticism from people cloaked in anonymity.

  103. WarriorNY December 4, 2011 12:18 pm

    ST,

If they let Mack go, do you think it will be another offense? Or will they stick with the RnS?

What about another assistant that worked under JJ? Mike Cavanaugh, Dennis Mcknight or someone like that. Retain Aranda and Rolo, and add a guy like Adrian Klemm to the staff for recruiting?

  104. Stephen Tsai December 4, 2011 12:34 pm

Klemm won’t come here as an assistant.

    Neither will Bhonapha.

I think Klemm’s next move is to the NFL.

On a positive note next year’s team will be a better balanced and more talented than the one Coach Mach Inherited in 2008. Any coach will face these five problems and will not change these facts 1. Distance to the mainland, 2. Higher admission requirements than most in your conference including the PAC-12, 3. Players must pay their own way to and from the islands, 4. The lure of playing for a team in a BCS conference, 5. Lack of rich alum’s willing to pay the players thousands under the table.

There are some who believe that Coach Mack pulled off one of the greatest con jobs in the modern history of Hawaii in pulling in 1.2 mil per year. Me not included, as I always stand by my belief that if you like play, you gotta pay. I do believe however, that he was in the right place at the right time. Howzit, everyone!

Wondering what the next move will be for our football program. Will we keep Coach Mack? Will he change OC and DC again? Can we afford to buy him out AND hire a new coach, while losing more money due to changing conference, etc. (as ST reminded us above)? Would a local Prep coach be a good fit at a discounted college price in these tough financial times? (And hope he retains enough college level assistants/recruiters to get through the first few years.) I mean, most coaches on the market are guys who were fired. Do we want that, or go in a new direction altogether? The RnS had helped get us back onto the map. But, has it run it’s course already?

    I am so confused…

Las Vegas, our prayers are with you!!!

Mahalo once again to our Seniors! Glad that all of you are graduating! Good luck to all of you in your future endeavors.

JJ’s pass heavy offense does not fit well with the current running back and receiver personnel. ASU needs DEFENSIVE help, their current OC, Noel Mazzone handles their offense quite well. This is most likely the AD’s plan of putting together a high octane offense to handle the competition in the PAC-12…she’s another one they should have let go along with Erickson.

1.3 Mil because Fresno wants to STAY NATIONALLY RELEVANT, COMPETE TO WIN, and POSITION THEMSELVES for the future. All this “pay the next UH coach $500k” thing is making me a bit worried about just how committed we are to just having a football team, or fielding a team that is Nationally relevant, competes to win in all phases and poised for present and future greatness.

St thanks for a great blog. Will u still be posting after football season?

I think give mack a 1 or 2 year extension with less money and less buy out clause. If he do bad next season then let him go. Tho next season is tougher.

  166. kev-1 December 4, 2011 5:25 pm

    #165 . . . down the drain. Weren’t you watching?

  167. kev-1 December 4, 2011 5:26 pm

#168 . . . extension? Really? I can understand the “don’t buy him out, let him finish his contract” argument. But an extension?

  168. Shoko December 4, 2011 5:28 pm

Whats interesting is that Pat Hill voluntarily took a 300k paycut this year and this is how his career ends with Fresno. You’re fired!

  169. A-House December 4, 2011 5:34 pm

A-House family sends prayers for a speedy recovery to John in Las Vegas!!!

    Aunty Kumi keep the faith!

  170. Kevin December 4, 2011 5:35 pm

Fresno State shows that they are observant and concerned about their program’s welfare and the welfare of their entire athletic department given the current landscape of college football.

Sure Hill took a pay cut, but the RESULTS were not there and heading into the MWC, WHILE it is NOT the conference it was not too long ago, the POINT of getting your program on the right track and being attractive to preserve financial prosperity is something that appears to NOT have been lost on Fresno State administration.

    UH ADMINISTRATION…????

We’ll see, they should have ENOUGH financial figures at this time and facts as a result of … well. results, or a lack thereof to make an educated and wise decision soon.

People concerned with renewing Mack but citing a lower annual salary as some sort of resolution are missing the POINT and avoiding the REAL problem plaguing the program and crippling the potential of the student-athletes we have and will potentially bring on board.

  171. al December 4, 2011 5:35 pm

it would be a great pick up for the program to have jt turner.

  172. al December 4, 2011 5:36 pm

  174. Pride. December 4, 2011 5:40 pm

#169 – No not really. I predicted a 7 and 6 season. Was off by just a little at 6 and 7, with three games that coiuld have gone either way. Little better in a few areas and we are looking at a 9 and 4 season.

    Lost to Fresno 24-21

    Utah St. 35-31

    SJSU 28-27

Eleven points away from a 9 and 4 season, two points away from going to the Hawaii bowl. Not reason to be happy, but just trying to keep things in perspective.

kev-1…you said “down the drain”. I say that the players fought, and fought hard. I don’t consider that “down the drain”. But I do agree that it’s okay for you and I to disagree.

  175. A-House December 4, 2011 5:47 pm

    The Day After:

    so sad. so sad.

What I thought would be a banner year for UH started well, but quickly fell apart and kept going down hill.

Was it the coaches inability to “coach each game”, communicate to the players, create cohesion and unity within the team?

Was it the player(s) who chose to do whatever they did as a coach can only do so much? Did the players believe in their coaches? Players must execute on the field.

Will things change next year if the coaching staff is kept in tact? Will the coaches do things differently? Will the players? Will a new coach and staff make a difference?

Some will point to JJ’s first season, but the next year was a disaster. Why?

A year or two ago, I posted that a “new” coach must be given 4-5 years to prove his mettle and recruiting as it wil take time for a player to devleop and make a significant contribution.

Some will do it earlier; others will take longer.

Like Doris Day sang, “Que sera sera, what ever will be will be, the future is not ours to see, Que sera sera”.

Will agree with others that the Warrior cupboard is loaded with talent just waiting to burst out and make significant contribution in 2012!

  178. 808Bowler December 4, 2011 6:04 pm

Yes extension. The guy has a winning record. U got to give him a extra year. For recruiting purposes and program purposes. The 2 losing seasons he had been devasted by injuries. Ive never seen any team lose there qb and top wr and win overall. Unless ur a bcs team where talent is abundent. his players graduate and runs a clean program. Let him bring the team to the new conference and see where it goes. Just my opinion. Plus no coach going want to come here for assistant money.

  179. BigHiloFan2 December 4, 2011 6:05 pm

  180. anklebiters December 4, 2011 6:09 pm

This is getting really interesting….ASU president and other school officials flew to SMU on a private jet provided by a booster to visit Jones on Saturday according to sources familiar with the plan. Personally, I’d like to see Jones picked if he indeed is on the list..when the RNS is working, it’s a thing of beauty.

To the poster who mentioned ‘high and mighty’ fans, it happens with other programs, not just ASU…maybe UH also? πŸ˜‰

  181. 808Bowler December 4, 2011 6:12 pm

Mac has one winning season 2008 7-7, 2009 6-7, 2010 10-4 and 2011 6-7. He is 29-25 in four years at the helm. The team took a beating on national TV in the last game of every season he coached.

    Aloha means Goodbye!

  185. Buffoman December 4, 2011 6:36 pm

#181 I agree with you on one point, no quality HC would come for the rumored pay the UH is looking to pay. At that rate, we should bolt the MWC and go play in D-II. Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s expensive to play in the big league and the quicker UH comes to that resolve understnading and making decisions accordingly, the better off we all are. If we want to pay at the lower level, state it, make and the Chair of the Regents, the UH President and Governor all present to make the announcement that we will be playing D-II. If not, shut up, pay up, expect up and conduct yourselves accordingly.

On the other points, no. he was paid to do a job and fell short. It’s business. You could have been great with your fellow workers, the neighbors, paid all your bills on time, but if you did not get customers through the doors and the cash register ringing as the general manager, you were let go. Same, same.

BTW, you remember when that starting QB from that team came here and was injured and left and that back up came in and lit us up? Emergency preparedness? That did not happen when Moniz went down.

No, to any extension and if he stays, there needs to be very, very specific milestonesfor expectation for each game. Stumble and you’re gone. He can keep whoever he wants, but everyone has to understand that there is a very distinct line. If other colleges can fire after the 4th game why can’t we? In other words, if there is a UNLV again next year in the 4th or 5th game and we blow up, pack up. There should also be a number of seats to be filled when we’re at home, say 29,000 (I’m guessing of course as I don’t know the financial breakdown of what is the minimum per game needed to breakeven)? If this is the situation, let’s keep it all business.

  187. 808Bowler December 4, 2011 6:50 pm

Ya thats true. jus think by giving him an extension would mean renegotiating his deal and that buy out clause he has. thinking give him a 1 year ext so can change that buyout and make it less. Like u said if he no reach goals can let him go for far less then wat it us now.

Was looking around and saw jj had 31 wins, after 4 seasons and mac 29.

Granted jj had butts in the seats.

  188. kev-1 December 4, 2011 6:57 pm

#177 Pride . . . I actually had high expectations for the team, so maybe I am more disappointed than you. I was expecting an 11-2 or 10-3 season. That’s what I mean by down the drain.

I in no terms meant to discredit the fact that the players put it out there, but I am pretty sour about the coaching.

    btw . . . I am glad we can disagree peacefully =)

  189. 808Bowler December 4, 2011 7:01 pm

ralph, amazing that not too long ago we had the number 1 women vb player from Iowa at UH and now her hometown is seeded 4. guess the girls see more future in vb now than bb. girls bb is huge in iowa, but it looks like vb is doing just as good. good luck to the cats.

  202. whitey December 4, 2011 7:18 pm

now let’s see if da warriors can get the 6’4 and taller linemen from da midwest.

  203. papajoe2 December 4, 2011 7:20 pm

I don’t want to go to DII but looking at the numbers, we may not have too much of a choice. The big schools are getting so much money from tv. Say, with $20 mil a year, they can afford better coaches, including asststants. Plus their attendance numbers 50, 60, 75+ thousand. Where does that leave the mid schools? What about the smaller mid schools? I’m sure there are other schools and conferences, but schools like San Jose State, Idaho (Kibbie Dome sits 16,000), lower tier MWC and CUSA schools who average even lower attendance than UH. Without the big tv bucks, the smaller schools will get even smaller. The seperation between the haves and have nots are getting larger. I think in the very near future, the big schools will get their wish to form their own league, while the mid schools (like UH) will have a lower division all to themselves. Schools in the larger conferences that do not have the fan base (Washington State is 1 that comes to mind) will eventually drop down too. Look at the BCS games this year. How can a team like Boise State NOT get into a BCS game? Its a good thing that the BSC has to give money to the smaller, non BCS conferences, but split among the individual conferences and teams within the conferences, leaves not enough to even pay for a high profile type of coach. But what can you do?

Ya where any record better then 0-12 would be considered an improvement when the bar was set high when mac took over. When a high profile coach leaves recruits notice and not as easy to get gud players in. if a new coach going be intresting to see the expectations and time that person have. Next years schedule is tough. 1st game on the road at usc then At byu. Well at byu for now. Think I herd that game might move to a later date.

  207. rainbowfan December 4, 2011 7:41 pm

I hope the new cornerback is a little better than Edwards as Edwards didn’t live up to pre-season hype except for doing pretty good on kickoff returns, excluding the mental lapses.

  208. Derek December 4, 2011 7:45 pm

Personally, I’d like to see a head coach who plays an innovative style of offense, up tempo. We all know Mack is a defensive coach. I prefer the spread offense compared to the run and shoot. It would be good to have a hybrid player and some tight ends too. Better blocking helps the running game, especially on short yardage situations.

Change happens in college football every year. And by the pure law of averages, it’s only natural that most schools deal with coaching changes every few years. Especially those at the mid-major level. Most people are naturally resistant to change, as even though something might be painful, we deal with it because it is a pain we are familiar with. Fear of the unknown can doom many a great opportunity. We dealt with change before, and there is a strong possibility that such change is about to happen again. I’m not worried, change is good. We going be ok regardless. And yes, the players will be ok too. Go Warriors!

    BIK

  224. Buffoman December 4, 2011 7:55 pm

It would be dreaming, but having someone who understands Chip Kelley’s offense would be great as our HC, if he could coach and organize like his mentor. That offense is unbelievably quick, organized and effective.

I agree with D1shima, better tackling and blocking would be welcomed additions. It was not consistently apparent this year. I must say that London’s downfield block to spring the UH TD was a thing of beauty. We just needed more of that with consistency.

  225. bigislandkurt December 4, 2011 7:58 pm

#59 Shoichi I concur with what you wrote. This has been a difficult season for sure but I believe Coach Mack deserves to finish out his last year and we go from there. I believe this would have been a difficult season for any coach with all the injuries and constant negativity by the newspaper know-it-alls and backseat fans. Everyone thinks by changing coaches we will have the success the program needs but I doubt that very seriously.

  237. hossana December 4, 2011 8:13 pm

Re: Post. 48 = He’s the only one making sense because all the upcoming coaches mentioned wouldn’t want to come to UH knowing the politics and micro-managers involving the UH football program. Also, how long do you actually think they would stay…let’s say it they were successful in winning 7-8 games and going to the Hawaii Bowl…you need consistency, patience, and someone that understands the nature and culture of the program and remember who UH is opening against in their first game next season…that being USC…and I can guarantee you that any new coach coming in that sees USC as the opening game or at anytime on the schedule would be wary because they know its going to be a blowout of epic proportions and going into the MWC won’t be a cake-walk, also. Giving Mack a contract extension of 3 yrs. with a base salary of around $400,000 with incentives e.g. attendance, qualifying for a Bowl, beating a Div. 1 team on national TV, winning the MWC etc….should be adequate enough. All of you think its easy replacing a coach in Hawaii thinking people will flock to be a H.C. here is in fantasy land. You want a coach with an understanding of the local nature of our culture and willing to endure the slings and arrows that many of you are winging at the current H.C…and yes, I am very unhappy with this year’s team, but you have to be realistic. Yes, many of you will criticize me and say I SHOULD BE REALISTIC and terminate Mack but think out the problem and solution first and don’t let your emotions get the best of your reason. Cooler heads should prevail and that’s with the sportswriters, also

  238. Pride. December 4, 2011 8:18 pm

Was a pretty smart growing up. Still never understood why the pop warner coach said that we had to train to play for five quarters. We ran everyday, over, and over, and over again. Training for five quarters of play. Even in the fifth grade I knew that four quarters made one and five quarters made more than one. Could never understand why if you played a full game, you would still only play four quarters. So why run five quarters worth of conditioning, if the fifth quarter doesn’t exist. Hmmmmm. Things little kids think about while suffering during conditioning drills.

  239. 3-Prong December 4, 2011 8:18 pm

I’m still Backin McMacin. 2 more years reduced pay in conjunction with results on the field. Need to do it right away for the sake of recruiting. Star Advertiser writers should just stick with the facts. So negative and counterproductive.

  240. Pride. December 4, 2011 8:23 pm

Could also never understand the saying by the same pop warner coach that said, get low, you can never be too low. So if I lie down on the ground is that like, not like, toooo low? How’s about lying at a level below ground level, like maybe in a ditch, is that not like wayyyy tooo low? Hmmmmm. Coaches need to explain things to little kids.

  241. HipHopDontStop December 4, 2011 8:23 pm

    Aloha,

IMO, Coach Mac will be back for another season, regardless. The UH football program can’t afford to buy him out.

The problem is why are players like, Moses Samia, Bo Yap, Marcus Malepeai, Tavita Woodard, TJ Taimatua, Darrell Mcbribe, Goerge Davey Lyles, Jordan Monico, Kamalani Alo, Kenny Estes, Dee Magit, and many other players who are considered to be very good athletes, good enough to compete but still not having enough PT? Some kind of rotation of some sort. Why wait for an injury or a senior to exit before given the opportunity to contribute? This could have made an impact during the season, maybe even games that should have been won, by the contribution of the TEAM. Of course this is a team sport right? Everyone on the team contributing? So what if there only freshmans and sophomores, play them anyways, and that will give some of the starters something to think about when these young bucks start making plays. When those starters come back in, there going to want too get there’s as well, no doubt. If the coaches are not going to play these guys, then there better off sitting in the stands with the redshirt freshmans and not be suited up at all. IMO, Trevor Davis and Brian Clay wasted a year of eligibility because this season led too a losing season anyways. Remember that everyone in college football is suppose to be good enough too compete. If not they wouldn’t be on the team playing D1 football. Instead playing at some JC college. I dare anyone to randomly ask those players that don’t have PT how they really feel about practicing all week, especially in the starting spot due too an injured starter who doesn’t practice 3-4 days, but yet, only to see the starters playing the entire game and that particular player who had confidence all week thinking he had an opportunity, watch the entire game from the sidelines wondering what he did wrong.

Coaches have to change there ways, and start giving these underclassmans the opportunity to contribute. If I was coach Mac, I’d demote Rolo and Aranda too position coaches, hire Norm Chow or some OC/DC that has credentials and years of experience coordinating both offense and defense. Don’t know too much on Aranda but Rolo never coached at the hs/JC ranks yet, but still managed to go strait to D1. These cats have to start with the basics before they can coordinate with the big dawgs, seriously.

    ST writes,

“The seniors should be congratulated for their efforts on the field and in the classroom. Every player has either graduated or is on track to earning a degree. Developing players (Brian Clay, Tavita Woodard, Craig Cofer, Beau Yap, Desmond Dean, Stump Godfrey) offer optimism”.

Really? Did every senior on the team have an opportunity to contribute? Are you fascinated with player like these? That you forget to name a few? It seems like your fascinated with Mike Edwards too? I’m just keeping this real. If your going to cover, spread the Aloha an cover hidden gems in the rough. There are over a hundred athletes that you could mention, of course this is a TEAM thing right?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rockne Freitas is in the middle of getting a new Head Coach. He was instrumental in getting us into the MWC and he has connections. Remember, the Chancellor and AD had very little to do of us moving conferences. The Chancellor (who signed Mac to an annual million dollar contract) is retiring at the end of the school year. And Donovan was not hired by Greenwood. I believe she is calling the shots and making a statement as to who’s in charge.

I posted before the Fresno St. game that the word from lower campus was that if Mac didn’t get to the bowl, he’d be fired on Monday. If he lost the bowl, he would be fired the following Monday. I guess we’ll find out tomorrow if that was true.

  243. 808Bowler December 4, 2011 8:26 pm

No. they raised prices for the entire season before season started. Regular games was $38 for theed gud teams and $34 for the junk ones. This year was 40 for even the dII schools and 50 for byu, fresno and colorado. Do they did raise they price but for the whole season. But I still paid.

  244. azwarrior22 December 4, 2011 8:27 pm

Coaching change is necessary. The time for action is yesterday. There are too many fans masquerading as empty seats, which affects the bottom-line. And we are losing to teams that we have no business losing to. I will stay away from criticizing coaches because they are doing their best BUT they are not getting the job done so change starts at the top and this is a business.

  245. Ipu Man December 4, 2011 8:29 pm

I thought our guys fought hard this last game.

BYU just had a few good breaks.

  246. 808Bowler December 4, 2011 8:29 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised if.they raise it again.

  247. 808Bowler December 4, 2011 8:32 pm

Just hate if we become a stepping stone school for assist to become hc only to move to another school later.

  248. Pride. December 4, 2011 8:32 pm

#248 – BYU also has a good football team with some pretty good football players.

  249. UHbacker December 4, 2011 8:33 pm

    247. Agreed, D1 football is a business, no offense to Mac and the coaches. But UH can’t afford Not to make a change.

No Coach is going to satisfy the “grass is greener” fans.

One thing for sure- the Tsai-ko Gate was a wonderful gathering and put a classy close to this football season. MAHALO to Mr and Mr Sailor Blue, the Early Crew, the Late Crew and all the wonderful folks that contribute so much to the FFFFFF that we have all come to love during football season!

Pride, I agree that those were 3 tough losses and we could be looking at 9-4 instead of 6-7. They were all winnable. You could make the argument that we lost all 3 games were due to the coaching. A coaching decision here, a play call there, etc. etc. etc.

  255. whitey December 4, 2011 8:46 pm

pride, that’s what da kids use to tell me at swim practice. how come we got to run stairs, carry each other up the stairs, use gadgets to crawl uphill, etc. i tell them by and by you learn how to swim fast. made them stretch every practice and the boys bitch and moan about their manhood. me, same kine coach as yours except different sport. hahahahahaaaaa

  256. cocobean December 4, 2011 8:49 pm

UH should do something that I can’t recall ever being done before.

Keep Mack for next year. Bring in someone as recruiting coordinator as the coach in waiting.

Some young hot shot assistant who’s willing to take around 250K for next season and a signed contract as HC starting in 2013.

    My suggestion is Adrian Klemm.

I’ll restate my reasons for Klemm.

He’s recoginzed as a top notch recruiter, he’s lived and played here, he’ll provide continuity for the type of players we’ve recruited for the R n S.

  257. whitey December 4, 2011 8:50 pm

plus every new year, i tell parents that we have coaches, not them, but their number one job is to cheer for their sons/daughters everytime they participate in a swim meet. they are their childrens best cheerleaders. of course there was option, if they no like that, then child go to another team and best wishes.

  258. Don Weir December 4, 2011 8:50 pm

    #246

They raised the seat premiums for the 10yd-35yd seats ‘to move people to the higher priced seats’ due to perceived value of the 40yd-40yd seats; ostensibly it was not a move to raise more money. The quote above is a direct quote and I was in the audience. I did not and do not agree with this concept. Many long time fans were charged more for the same seat they had for years.

The perceived value concept needs to be revisited.

    #245

I haven’t heard about the interview committee IF a new coach is the option. I’d ask that no one that was on the last search committee be on the future committee IF the new coach option is exercised.

    ‘IF’ Matters;

How about a little transparency in the process?

How about publishing the interview questions that will be asked?

How about publishing the prospective coach’s responses to the questions and any open ended comments made (anonymously of course)?

  259. whitey December 4, 2011 8:52 pm

cocobean, good suggestion as you see other teams do that in preparation for the “retirement” of their head coach. good idea!!!

  263. Not an Expert December 4, 2011 9:08 pm

I’d like to comment that reading articles and the reporting from Stephen Tsai is so upbeat and much more relevant to the truth compared to those of Reardon and Lewis. It is a wonder why his blog is so popular compared to those others. Negativity is not where it’s at.

Okay, Tebow has proven he’s got game, but how bout the media give some credit to that defense. They are the ones keeping the Broncos in the games.

  267. papajoe2 December 4, 2011 9:29 pm

I’ve said it before. If we have to keep coach Mac, then maybe he should change coordinators. They may just a bit too young and inexperienced to be a coordinator. JJ used to run the offense. Why can’t coach Mac run the defense. Miano has been there forever and I’m always disapointed in the way the D backs play. This year we made all the opponents qbs, whether starters or replacements, have a career game against us except the Davis qb. Come to think of it, last year too, except for maybe Kaeparnick (sp?) but yet he almost pulled it off in the end. I think Mana intercepted to end the game for Nevada. Yup, if not coach Mac, then something has to change.

  268. madeinhawaii December 4, 2011 9:29 pm

If we change coaches, I don’t see us keeping the same system without repeating the same mistakes. Who else is there to run this system? Ron Lee? Been there.. tried that… Who else?

  269. Eric December 4, 2011 9:34 pm

#266 – Ferd, Dave & ST have different roles within the SA sports team. Being a beat writer, ST writes about certain UH sports and must maintain good relations w/UH coaches which helps in getting information. Ferd & Dave are columnists that write based upon opinions. It is not critical for them to have good relatonships with coaches although it could help. As a team, they all have their roles and work well together so that the team wins.

  270. gmahoney December 4, 2011 9:34 pm

Papajoe, I think it was Corey Paredes who stripped Kaepernick as he was running for the goal line. Saved that game.

Imagine being a parent putting a child through college.

You have taken out a mortgage to pay for this education.

The school requires your child to put himself in harm’s way and risk broken bones and permanent brain damage in addition to his studies.

And he is expected to produce an income for the school.

ok… what does Houston have to do with me?

  287. kev-1 December 4, 2011 9:56 pm

#274 Liz . . . sorry, but that is completely irrelevant. The school “requires” nothing of the “child.” The child comes to the school to play football. That is a voluntary choice. Putting themselves in harms way is in no way relevant to the fact that a school needs to turn a profit to both sustain and compete. If the game is too violent for the child, he should not play. If it is too violent for others, than don’t watch.

It is a sport, and the program needs to make money. Of course you recruit athletes that you want to be successful on the field and help your program succeed. Especially, if it is a scholarship player. Otherwise, why compete?

It is not like UH is a big SEC or top level Pac-12 school that rakes in the millions. The UH football program is the athletic departments only hope of breaking into the black year after year.

  288. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 4, 2011 9:57 pm

  310. kev-1 December 4, 2011 10:25 pm

Come to think of it, why is it culturally appropriate for us to have him as a mascot? I do not think you will find another native mascot roaming the sidelines. Actually, teams have had to change their mascots in the past right? I don’t thing Florida State has a Seminole as their mascot, nor would they be allowed to. Has UH gotten some form of approval? Or is it just because he is representative of Polynesia and not one particular group? IDK . . . just wondering out loud.

  311. d1shima December 4, 2011 10:30 pm

On offense, the biggest recruiting needs seem to be linemen, wide receivers, and linemen. There will not be very many seniors next year – Sterling, Bright, Miah, Legay, Breydan.

On defense, the biggest need seem to be tackles, cornerbacks, and tackles. A number of linemen will be seniors.

    Maybe an understudy punter too.

  323. PolyMom December 4, 2011 11:07 pm

Very interesting evening. First not enough food at the banquet. Wow by the time we got to the food line…no beef. Kinda funny. My only observation was that Dave Aranda was on the phone sitting outside talking and hardly in the room.

Great video done by Robert Kekaula. He is such a gentle giant. Wow…at 5’8 and with heels on he makes me look lime a little tiny short person. He is very sweet. Met the infamous Stephen Tsai. The team did something very nice for a man in Hilo who was hit by a car at the age of 8. He is 47 now. They passed the ball through out the room for me to take back for him. He has been in a wheel chair with only the motion of one arm. Every time he pushes himself…he moves about an inch. Thanks to the football team for the gift that will make your favorite fan in Hilo a very happy man.

Always nice to see Pastor Joe Onosai. Join him for worship at UH on Sundays.

  324. kev-1 December 4, 2011 11:28 pm

PolyMom . . . that is a cool, touching story. Thank you for sharing.

  325. Ralph December 4, 2011 11:32 pm

K State invited to play Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl πŸ™‚

UH doesn’t need a big name coach, only one who is meticulous in detail and a disciplinarian. Meet Bill Snyder of K State. School started football in 1896, this year will only be their 15th bowl game in its history, it will be Snyder’s 13 bowl game in 20 years at K State. His recruits are NR, 2 and a few 3* by Scout, lots of JUCOs, but they mesh as a team with discipline. K State averaged 37 yards per game in penalties this season.

Good defense, good special teams, and control the ball by possession. Not a whole lot of offense, or excitement on offense, but they do move the chains slowly down field.

  326. Ralph December 4, 2011 11:38 pm

K State has scored 81 non offensive TDs since 1999, and that is both defensively and by their special teams. ST is something UH needs to work on every year and be good at it.

UH’s defense had some good years, some lean years, what we need to do is play with discipline in alignment and assignment and we will be good nearly every year.

PolyMom ~ Apologies from the Blogmeister’s (#49) table pahtna’s who joined me in an all-out attack on the food line in the first wave. I won’t give up any names besides mine, but they were not all registered Tsaiko’s.

I agree with you about the video done by RK, and would like to add that he made some very interesting observations about the players throughout the nite. Corey Paredes had made a slight faux pas as he turned to leave the stage. When he was called on it by RK, the entire room erupted in laughter!

There were fan faves and team faves as each of the boys were announced for various awards. Most of them were not prepared to make an acceptance speech, so there were the usual sutters and stammers along with short words of ‘thanks.’

Bryant Moniz brought his eldest daughter up to the stage with him. It turned out to be a real poignant father/daughter moment as the crowd cheered. The poor guy was called up to the stage at least 3 times. Each time he had to hobble up there with his crutches. Tuff night, good work out.

I almost forgot to mention the guest speaker, Jessie Sapolu, was given a real quirky intro by RK. Robert said that as tuff as Jesse was, he let guys like Joe Montana & Steve Young “touch his okole!” The crowd went wild!

Enjoyed having dinner at the same table with our Blogmeister,ST. I had to laugh when RK asked for the Warrior Beat Dude to standup and take a bow. We tried to tell him that he was standing!

Word on the down escalater was that there will be an important announcement made tomorrow morning…stay tuned.

made a very rousing speech that was really meant to inspire the Warrior team that will be fielded in 2012. The
