Tuesday
For the final time this regular season, it is game-plan Tuesday. The Warriors met for an hour of video reviews and strategy sessions, then for a little more than an hour of practice.
Of note:
• Quarterback David Graves did practice. He’s good to go. The unofficial diagnosis of his blurry vision on Saturday night: An electrolyte imbalance.
• With Scott Harding’s right foot in a medical boot — “just a precaution,” he said — a couple of players auditioned as punt returner. Harding said he will play.
• Billy Ray Stutzmann did not practice, but that’s not a concern. Normal bumps and aches. He will be ready to go tomorrow.
• Austin Hansen confirmed he will not participate in Saturday’s Senior Walk. It’s a shame. Even though he did not play this season while serving an NCAA suspension, he was a key player in 2010. He probably would have been the Warriors’ top o-line prospect if he had played this year. Hansen is brash, and his opinions do not come with a filter. But he is a refreshing voice, and he is a hard worker who cared about his craft. Best wishes to him.
• Back in town is Dennis McKnight:
Happy Viewing, Warriors!
Great Morning All!
and deux!
good morning
Living in the PRESENT.
Mahalo, Ke Akua!
GO WARRIORS!
Play like there’s no tomorrow. Imua, Warriors.
Good morning Tsaiko villagers.
In the face of all this turmoil and confusion, they played on.
With mounting injuries, and having to change the starting lineup 11 times, they played on.
Now, their HC and his staff are under heavy fire, and yet they will still, play on.
No matter the outcome Saturday, I will be proud to attend the Na Koa Warrior Banquet on Sunday to honor this team. I want to be able to thank as many players and their family members as I can for their supreme effort this season.
After all is said and done, if you really care about supporting your team, come show it.
GO WARRIORS!
BEAT BYU!
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
GO WARRIORS!!!
Morning All,
I don’t believe how you guys beat me on here… I was just on this page! I hope the recruits see a packed house this weekend vs BYU. As for everything else, we shouldn’t fret over what we have no control over…

Let the Warrior Supporters drown out the sound of spam! 😆
Kekoa… Chee Hoo!
Sorry to miss the banquet tho… Will be there in SPIRIT!!
Spam goes good with eggs and rice.
Good Morning and well said Kekoa.
and out of curiosity if Graves was cleared for this weeks game, and Graves is still the number one why isn’t he throwing today?
GO WARRIORS!!!
I’ve been a UH Warrior fan since 1966. In all honesty, asking a newbie David Graves to pull a hat trick is asking too much. When Hawaii faced Byu in 2000, they had a red hot Nick Rolovich stearing the ship. And a super WR in Ashlry Lelie. In 2004, the must win against Michigan St and Northwestern to go to the Sheraton Bowl occured because of Mighty Mouse and a experienced Timmy Chang. The Warriors have none of these going into the last geme. Allowing 23 points against a 2-10 team does not look good. Michigan St and Northwestern thought they only had to show up to beat the Warriors. BYU will be prepared and not suurprised. I love the Warriors. I want them to go to the Sheraton Bowl for the players sake and the fans sake. And Maybe face JJ mustangs. What a better X-mas gift could one ask for. But this is not the movies where fantasies occur. The reality is we have poor field goal kickers. It may come to a field goal and we have none. Our kickoff player can’t kick long, BYU will exploit that. Our starting QB is raw and BYU will terrorize him. But I love the Warriors win or lose. I hope all the fans in the stands stay till the end of the game and give the players a rousing ovation.
Not insulting Tyler Hadden but there must be one wahine soccer player on the UH soccer team who can kick longer than him. They outta go after talented kickers next year.
Howzit, everyone!
Heal up, Wariors!!!
Beeeeeg game coming up! Need all of you available!
Go, Team, Go!!!
Warriors too, even. Freezing, arthritic fingers make me type funny.
UH needs to come up with a better deal to get more fans in the stands. 2 touchdowns = 2 free tacos (Jack in the Box)! Tacos are fried grease! Why not two free plate lunches at Rainbows!
We’re with you, Kekoa!!!
Thank as many of them as possible on behalf of all da Mainland Fans too!!!
When the Warriors go five wide…i like the match up with Cory Paclobar or Stutz…Go Warriors!
I would start Shane Austin only because he’s been here 4 years and won’t let BYU scare him. I would spare David Graves from being creamed and he already is nursing an injury. Let’s show Aloha to our players. It’s Davey Crockett and the Alamo but we stand beside them all the way. Go Warriors!!! Your the best, or as Bu’laia would say “Your the bestest!”.
Will BYU also do the haka? They have a lot of Polys on their roster. Could make for an interesting warmup prior to the game.
I don’t think the oline can handle protecting an empty backfield, 5 wide set against BYU.
Send “Mighty Mouse” Ringtone to your Cell Translation in progress. Please wait…
Played live in 1989
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/n/no+doubt/mighty+mouse_20482448.html ]
Mr. Trouble never hangs around
When he hears this mighty sound…
“Here I come to save the day!”
That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way.
Yessir when there is a wrong to right
Mighty Mouse will join the fight
On the sea or on the land
He gets the situation well in hand
So though we are in danger
We never despair
Cause we know that where there’s danger
He is there!
He is there!
On the land!
On the sea!
In the air!
We’re not worryin’ at all
We’re just listenin’ for his call
“Here I come to save the day!”
That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way!
Wish we could have Mighty Mouse, Devon Bess, Jason Rivers, Ashley Lelie, Greg Salas and Nick Rolovich back for this game. Oh well wishful thinking doesn’t hurt.
The O-line has never been the same since coach Mike Cavanaugh left. He was strict but the players loved him. Many players he tutored are playing in the NFL. The good ol days. June Jones, Mike Cavanaugh. Sigh
strong feeling both Austin and Graves will play in this game. However, in regards to concerns about playing a young Graves . . . against a team like BYU, you may need someone with scrambling ability back there. I hope he doesn’t get rattled.
I’d like to see Rolo come out with a 15 play script right out of the gate, run a full house backfield or a triple option something that BYwho wouldn’t be expecting, I think the key to this game is us getting an opening lead of say 14 – 0.
David Graves is brave with a lot of b@lls but it’ll be like Georgia Bulldogs vs Hawaii in the 2008 Sugar Bowl. Colt was getting creamed so much JJ decided to have mercy on him by taking him out. David Graves would have to have Tim Tebow elusiveness to get away from the Cougars. I really feel for him. I hope BYU isn’t that brutal on him he’ll never recover. The O-line will have to reach in deep and play super super good and protect David. Shane Austin is a pure pocket passer so he will be at mercy if the O-line disintegrates.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Gee- mixed message – we going to lose but I support the Warriors??? This is showing aloha to our team?

Morning Slick Rick is available. Fired last night.
Morning to tommui and Don Weir.
#30 – tom – agree I wonder how many of the people who are “telling it like it is” ever played a down, because if you have you know that you feed off the fans, so instead of feeding them dog food feed them steak.
PolyMom no thanks you can keep him.
WW ~ I gotcha covered. I’ll remind the players that all the fans in the mainland traveled many miles to cheer them on.
Mailed out your DVD today.
The game will be on for your prime time viewing. Sounds like a down home Georgia pig picken is in order. Just give out a loud CHEE HOO! (and watch all da Expats come out of the woods!)
We got players
We got coaches
We got fans
Nuttin else matters TODAY.
GO WARRIORS!!!
Well I just read in the LA Times, that Puffy’s son just accepted a scholarship to UCLA. Hate to say this, but great marketing tool for attendance. I bet he buys 500 season tickets to fill up the stands. Not going to let his boy play for a losing team.
Pomai no worries seems like it is a done deal in Westwood for Chris Peterson to go there. Just saying. Hawaii can not get into the same pickle like we were in when JJ left. They have to make their move soon, or no move.
But I am happy that UCLA has made the move now. Bet Peterson moves to my hood. All the Cal Coaches live in South Bay. Hopefully he can bring back some pride to Westwood. Or they can fire Gurrero to. His job is on the line now.
King Leonides of Sparta had only a couple hundred troops against 250,00 Persians and gave the Persians a whooping. so I take back my word back. We can give the BYUpersians a royal whooping with King DavidLeonides leading the way.
CHEE HOO!
BEAT BYU!!!
I think this game will be more competitive than people think.

Thanks ST for leaving the blog open last night. I know its your blog, but I enjoy reading the comments from our mainland Warriors who are on a different time schedule. I woke up a 4:30am yesterday to read the blog as I had an early appointment, but it was turned off. Mahalo again ST.

Mahalo, Kekoa!
Glad the game will be on earlier. Prime time, baby!!! Not like I keep everyone awake, or wake them over and over, with all the hootin’ and hollerin’ at 2:00 in the morning! My wife and older kids usually stay up with me until the games end. But at least I can yell louder! True, though… nothing like being at the game! Gotta do what we gotta do to cheer the Home Team on!
Let’s go, Warriors!!!

Haven’t seen Garret since someone was not pleased with one of his posts. Garret there are people here who don’t like what I have to say a times either. So What! That’s the fun of talking sports. Garret your contributions are an invaluable part of this blog. I hope to see back soon.
Morning folks!
In my humble opinion, I don’t think Petersen would take the job at UCLA. He gets paid a higher salary compared to what Neuheisel was getting paid. Also, he’s with a program that has a history of winning. Taking the job at UCLA might be doomsday for Petersen just like it was for Hawkins.
Garret if you are on an extended European vacation scratch my #44.
Watched the Utah – BYU game and special teams breakdowns seems to have been the back breaker for BYU, which opened the floodgates.
Prediction: John Hardy-Tuliau gets 2 blocked punts against BYU.
During the first major battle in Nov 14,1965, Lt Col Moore and 400 men landed in a valley called La drang. Not knowing the enemy strength, a captured North Vietnamese soldier revealed they landed in the base camp of 4,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Greatly outnumbered, Lt Col tactical genius defeated the 4,000 of the enemy with only 400 American G.I’s. It was made into a movie “We were soldiers” starring Mel Gibson. BYU may be bigger, better won-loss record but the human spirit can never be underestimated. We can win!!!!!
I have been thinking of who Justin Clapp reminds me of and it is Dane McArthur.
Shoko,
Depends how much UCLA is willing to pay. With the $20M+ in TV money alone, they could conceivably offer Petersen $3M+ if they REALLY wanted to make it work. Throw in incentives, speaking engagements, media etc on top of that and that could push the $$$ to $4M.
In terms of Hawkins, it has been said before that he would not have been the success was at BSU without Petersen running the show behind the scenes.
Only the shadow knows.
Yes … Very Much Like Dane McArthur … very reliable 1st Down possession-ater and TD Maker …
POMAI — UH 27 BYU 24 — Closer than we usually Beat BYU …

The Use of Graves, Iosefa, Double-Passes (like USU) and Paul Johnson’s incarnation of our spread “Run-and/or-Shoot” is a Natural Option with our already in-place four-wide and ability to run option/spread passes — As we’ve Blown Out BYU in the past …
PLUS Throw in ALL of Tomey’s Trick Plays that we’ve been saving All Long-Season Long…
—— VB Thought ——–
IT occurred to me last night while fuming ’bout the seedings (it’s amazing but should be no surprise how they mess it up every year):
To Re-Seed the Cloud, Looking for a Silver Lining:
and Coach Shoji even mentioned it on the BC Show this morning:
Whoever makes it out of the third and fourth rounds in Hawai’i, with potentially this past week’s AVCA Nos. 1, 2, 3 & 10 here, should be a good shot to win it all @ the San Antonio Final Four —
The REAL Final Four seems to be in Hawai’i … IF i had to choose to face USC, Nebraska & Cal — You got to Beat ‘Em All Any Way to Win the National Championship — Better Here @ SCC than anywhere else …
i think Peterson’s Too Smart to go to UCLA — UCLA still has the OLD Notre Dame/Ohio State/Penn State Arrogance — they think they’re so special that they can get a good coach and a Consistent Top Notch program without matching what USC & Oregon invests into a Total Program (Facilities, Salaries, Budget) as even Neuheisel alluded this morning …
OH ! ? Isn’t that what JJ was also alluding to ? ….
chiefgator:
You’ve pointed out some sobering observations.
You’re absolutely right. With the limited resources we have going into this weekends rumble, it truly is a mismatch and looks to be a one-sided fight. Totally not fair!!
BYU BETTER BRING MORE BACK UP!!!

http://www.nakoa.org/2011/11/na-koa-football-club-invites-public-to-its-football-alumni-event/
Na Koa Football Club, the organization dedicated to supporting excellence in academics and athletics for University of Hawaii Warrior Football, is bringing the past to the present in a Football Alumni Event prior to this Saturday’s game against Brigham Young University. The party begins at 12:30 p.m. inside of Gate 6 at Aloha Stadium, and the public is invited to join in the fun.
The event will feature former Rainbows and Warriors, no-host food and drink, autograph opportunities, and a chance to learn more about Na Koa and supporting the UH Football Program. Following the event, and prior to the 2:30 p.m. game, the football alumni will make their way on to the field to form a tunnel of former players for the 2011 Warriors to run through on the way to their field for the nationally televised game.
“Many of us remember some thrilling UH wins in the last 20 years over BYU, and this is a great way to get our former players and fans pumped up for the game,” said Kim Fujiuchi, executive director, Na Koa Football Club. “It’s a perfect way to celebrate the players past and present at what is now the most important game of the 2011 season.” For more information, call the Na Koa Football Club at (808) 956-4513, or log onto http://www.nakoa.org.
Josh (Sky) Walker reports on fb:
“Got revenge on a team that beat us in Preseason. Won our match in 4 sets. 4-0 to start the season. 2-0 at home and 2-0 on the road. Undefeated in November. 1st place in the UAE. Great start. #TGBTG Bring on December.”
Chee Hoo! Good month in the office!
I would love Hawaii to win this Saturday…Let me just put it that way. Haha.
#53 . . . like that
IWWTHM,
I don’t think Petersen is concerned about the money being offered. He’s different. His philosophy is different. He could have easily got the job with Florida when Urban Myer left. I think he has ambitions that exclude any salary increase. I think he wants to lead a non-aq team to reach a national championship. He’s got a good thing going right now. He’s in a comfort zone and it seems thats whats important.
Where there’s a WILL there’s a WIN.
#53 – love it.
Liz,
But what if BYU has just as much will? Hahah 😛
#58:
If Boise St moves to the Big East, Peterson will no longer be in a non-AQ conference in 2012 or 2013.

ahouse…are you suggesting that he take his cause to honolulu?
Sorry that we cannot attend the football banquet, but we decided to spend our money on supporting the Wahine volleyball team’s post-season appearances. Actually, I was sort of stunned at the huge bump in the price of the banquet tickets.
Regarding a number of posts over the past several days about a wide range of issues – uniforms, concession/ticket/parking prices, marketing, student attendance, coaching personnel changes, etc. – I urge those of you who have strong feelings along with suggested changes to communicate directly with the particular policy decision-makers who can implement these changes. You will be far more effective in making change by doing that instead of just fulminating on this blog.
If you are interested in doing this, send me an e-mail swood at hoku dot com so I can provide you with detailed contact information. Please include your (real) name and contact telephone number.
I cannot include all of the contacts here because there are limitations on this website as to how many click-tos I can post.
Anything having to do with Aloha Stadium – parking fees, food service charges, security matters, beer sales, bathroom cleanliness etc. – submit your concerns to Scott Chan, the manager, and the Stadium Authority.
Internal decisions about on-campus athletics are addressed by specific offices within the Department of Athletics. Each week, there is a staff meeting so your written complaints will be promptly addressed. Send them to the specific office with CCs to Jim Donovan & Carl Clapp
With respect to Big Picture athletic issues such as ticket prices, coaching changes, student admission policies, etc., these are to be addressed to Donovan and the Chancellor’s office.
If you are concerned about UH policies in general, then address your comments to the Board of Regents. Remember that Keith Amemiya, Esq., is the Executive Administrator and Secretary of the BOR and has a long & positive relationship with sports here in Hawai`i.
If you are concerned about UH-Manoa policies in general, address your concerns to the Chancellor’s office.
CC all your UH concerns to State Senator Jill Tokuda and State Representative Scott Nishimoto whose legislative committees oversee higher education. You should also contact your own state senator/representative even if s/he does not sit on either of the committees.
Aloha Stadium issues are addressed by State Senator Carol Fukunaga and State Representative Tom Brower.
The most effective way to make change is to speak up (write down) about your concerns and communicate them with people who have the power to make change. Educate & inform them.
I have spent most of my personal & professional life working on issues as diverse as the HI-5 bill and dangerous dogs legislation and the federal Equal Rights Amendment which still hasn’t been passed by enough states to be part of the U.S. Constitution. Hawai`i affirmed it decades ago and included it in the State Constitution back in 1978.
Maybe my next go-around on the Great Wheel of Life, I can finally celebrate its passage.
I liked how Graves plays the game but with that being said I am not completely sold on him for next year. His passes could have been open and he also missed open WRs. No matter what happens at the end of this season I think going into next year that they should open the competiton up. Would not be surprised if Cayman Shutter comes out strong. His release just reminds me of Colt
Too bad we can’t a Haka dance-off between the two teams during half-time …
wassupdoc…i missed the tsaiko tailgate (again).
so what main dish did you prepare this past game?
There’s goes my dyslexia again.. skipping words completely… I’m so used to typing, I can’t hand write checks very well these days… I keep missing letters in my numbers..and in my own signature LOL

Last night around 11:00 pm, I posted a link to a story by writer Dick Harmon of the Deseret News in Provo.

I hope history repeats itself for the 4th time!

if C Petersen accepts the UCLA position, maybe, jus maybe he will schedule a home and home game with Hawaii USC does it as well as Udub and Wazzu until they backed out.
certain HC are doomed to become the next greats at football and basketball and their station will always be with a top notch BCS school – fan and boosters are so fickle today that tenure makes it very difficult – J Paterno may be the last HC to be at the same school for decades!!
Cool, SteveM!
CHEE HOO!!! GO WARRIORS!
We need to bring back something to confuse BYU, the stacked recievers from 1989 and 1990, they will never know what hit them. Go Warriors!
when schools join a BCS conference for football only, does that mean that their “TV income will only be for Football?”
how da heck does one create a formula to divide the $$$ between football and basketball – as in the Big East?
somebody in management does not like me – i have been suspended from coming to work the next 2 days – wish they would make it longer than i can hop a plane to vegas!
Al:
We haven’t gone to the pre-game T-Gates the past two Saturdays because of Wahine daytime basketball games. By the time we arrived at the parking lot on both Saturdays, it was after 4:30 pm. However, we brought cinnamon rolls both times for the Post-Gate parties.
We may not be at this Saturday’s T-Gate either because I am being “pressured” by a local political organization to take part in the Kaneohe Christmas Parade which will end shortly before noon at Castle High School.
After picking up the car at Windward Mall, it will be close to 1 pm by the time we arrive at Aloha Stadium.
As usual, we’ll bring cinnamon rolls to the Post-Gate if we decide to march in the Parade. If we don’t, then we’ll bring pre-cooked teriyaki chicken + a microwave to heat them up along with the rolls.
If there’s a Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl T-Gate, then we’ll be there with food. The men’s basketball tournament takes a break on December 24 & neither of us has to work that day. No matter who plays in the SHB, we’ll be going to the game. In fact, we already have our tickets.
Na Koa folks (PP, Na Koa Mike):
GOOD IDEA!
… Football Alumni Event prior to this Saturday’s game against Brigham Young University. The party begins at 12:30 p.m. inside of Gate 6 at Aloha Stadium, and the public is invited…
The event is being held INSIDE of Gate 6 which means those fans who want to meet the alum are IN the stadium before the 1st qtr starts. Got to get the okoles in the seats before the broadcast.
GO WARRIORS!!!
#82: did not Rolo do a 4 receiver stack once?
only problem is that they were so far to the left or was it the right sideline that it was ineffective as the defense reacted quickly and kept the gain to less than 10 yards.
what is the maximum number of players that can be in motion before the QB sets the team? ie, can a 4 stack to the far side make a mass movement to 5 yards from the OT, set and play begins?
how about 1 receiver become a TE and the opposite OT step back and become an eligible receiver? make mass movement to the stack side, lateral the ball to a receiver (Iosefa) who tosses it to the OT – surely some OT must have soft hands with some speed!
Illegal procedure.
chiefgator,
Hope “LCol” Rolo is able to call in RT and air support to swing things in his favor like the 7th Cav did at Ia Drang
I miss having a TE as it seems that they can cause major headaches for a defense if you have a talented one. Ron Hall, Kent Unterman, Henry Sovio, Mike Jackson, Jerry Scanlan, among others of note at UH.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Tim Tebow’s elusiveness?” Oh please! Don’t insult our QB’s with a lame statement like that. Our QB’s have proven themselves in battle already. They leave it all out on the field, heal…and come back for more!
We got kids that are still in HS that are more elusive than Tebow! Tebow’s stats paled in comparison to Colt’s, and yet he walked out with the Heisman. Pfffft…Go figure!
I feel bad for the players and especially the seniors that their fellow students won’t come out to support them. But then where I sit, there are a lot of season ticket holders who don’t show up – and they could give their tickets away.
Pomai: David and the Warriors 31, Goliath and the Y-hoos 30.
Go Warriors!
#92 is absolutely hilarious!
Spam blaming the WB for spamming the spam.
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
I agree with those who HOPE that Hawaii comes out with something diffrent on offense. Of course I have been hoping that all year, and so far, pretty much the same. But maybe just maybe, this game our game plan will be bold and creative. I Believe !!
#67 Graham
I agree with you. Cayman Shutter is the best all round QB we have on the roster and an excellent leader.
Was out of town last week and I tried giving my tickets (4) away including the the free parking pass. No takers! Once the wheels fell off mid way thru the season, people just lost interest in attending games. Hope they can crack the 30,000 level on Saturday.
Two student organizations on the Manoa campus. See anything about this Saturday’s game with BYU on their respective websites? Seems to highlight the apathy on campus and lack of school spirit among the students there. Very sad.
I’m an old guy so please excuse if my comments are outdated.
back in the days when I attended UH, the UH players were very much a part of the school scene. Levi Stanley used to spend some time in the evenings at Sinclair and he was very approachable. So, we’d go and talk story with him. He’d have the funniest on field, locker room stories. We’d make it a point to go to Sinclair when he said he’d be there studying and checking out the women and he created a following. We’d go to the games to be a part of Levi’s army. It was really fun.
We did that with Penny, Al Davis and Holiday when they’d hang out at Hemmingway and would go to the games to cheer “our friends” on.
I don’t know if there’s that closeness amongst the student athletes and student body. That sense of friendship brought bunches of students to the games.
Provo • Former BYU quarterback Brandon Doman, now the team’s offensive coordinator, has a lot of wonderful memories from the season 10 years ago when he led the Cougars to 12 straight wins in coach Gary Crowton’s first year.
But the 13th game in 2001 — at Hawaii — is not one of them.
“An absolute nightmare,” Doman said last week.
Saturday, the Cougars (8-3) for the first time will return to the scene of that disaster, Aloha Stadium, where on Dec. 8, 2001, Hawaii crushed eighth-ranked and undefeated BYU 72-45 behind a spectacular performance by quarterback Nick Rolovich, who, oddly enough, is now Hawaii’s offensive coordinator.
😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎
Meeting of the minds on Saturday.
Doman vs. Rolo – the sequel.
Buffoman #94: Great stories. Yeah, I think that there is a disconnect between the general student population and the athletes. I often have business on campus, I notice a lot of the football players hanging around the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut in front of the Campus Center and, of course, down at the Athletic Complex. I guess one of the reasons there are no more “athletic dorms” on campus was to bring down that wall between athletes and regular students. Back during the Dave Holmes and Larry Price years the football team was housed in Hale Anuenue in the Lower Campus. JMHO.
For some of the BYU players, however, going to Hawaii won’t be a distraction in the same way; it will be going home.
“I’m pretty excited,” said senior defensive lineman Simote Vea. “I’ve played quite a few times in that stadium (in high schoo). It was different. I’ve been to a few Hawaii games and it’s not your typical BYU game. There is alcohol and some crazy people.”
10 Cougars on the football roster are listed as coming from the islands and since BYU has made the trip since 2001, for those guys it will be the first chance to play in front of family and friends.
“I’m excited to play in front of people who know me,” Vea said. “I hope they can all be there. I’m trying to get tickets for them.”
“They are bringing sexy back,” a Hawaii television announcer said during the Warriors’ 35-23 win over Tulane, pumping up the first meeting between Hawaii and BYU since 2002.
Well, they need to do something in the islands. Only 21,542 fans attended the Tulane game at Aloha Stadium, Hawaii’s smallest crowd since 1998. The Cougars, who are going to the Dec. 30 Armed Forces Bowl, win or lose, know Warriors fans will be there in force this Saturday.
“We are obviously excited for the opportunity to go play a great team out there,” said BYU quarterback Riley Nelson, perhaps not realizing that this Hawaii team is actually on the mediocre side of the scale. “We know that they are very tough at home, and they come to play. And the time difference and the jet lag and all that can be a factor, so we are going to do everything we can to prevent that. So overall, we are excited and anxious.”
Interesting re tv rights and BYU-
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/52989637-77/byu-east-games-league.html.csp
What is BYU’s value to a conference if the Cougars insist on retaining all TV rights to their home football games?
Zero.
At least in terms of television, which is where leagues make huge amounts of money.
Adding BYU to the Big East could, perhaps, help that league maintain its AQ status. But TV revenue is 10 times as important as BCS revenue.
Literally.
This year, BCS bowl games will generate $125 million. During the 2012 season, it’s estimated the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC will rake in at least $1.2 billion from TV.
When leagues sell TV rights, their inventory is conference games. In some cases, it’s all home games.
A league member that doesn’t add to that inventory is worthless. And, while BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe tried to clarify the situation on KSL radio on Monday night, he acknowledged making a proposal to the Big East that “We could sign on right now, if there were TV rights for our home games.”
Oh gosh, Doman…Stretch can look at him eye-to-eye this weekend, unless they put window covering like the Tulane coaches originally did. 🙂 HAHA! I think Stretch should carry my old-school “BEAT BYU” towel up there and put it near their window.
Hey Na Koa Mike, Liz and Slugger, thanks for posting the item about the Football Alumni Event on Saturday…awesome idea. I know Kim Fujiuchi, Mike Biscotti and everyone else are working real hard on it. Those who can make it…12:30 inside Gate 6 – see you there!!!
Go Warriors!!!
Beat BU!!!!!
Happy birthday to Blog-Grandma Jean Tsai, who would have been 77 today.
Washington State has fired Paul Wulff:
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/cougars/2016886020_coug30.html
If you’ve been to Pullman, Washington you immediately realize that it has to be a difficult place to recruit players. Not a lot going on there amid the wheat fields.
That makes ASU, UCLA, and now WSU looking for new HCs. Read that Mike Leach is being viewed as a candidate at WSU.
#113,
About time. Felt sorry for classmates who are Wazzu alumns.
Regarding WSU’s Paul Wulff. I wonder if it’s a case of you get what you pay for? Wulff was the lowest paid coach in the Pac-12 at $600K. The defensive coordinators at Tennessee and Alabama earn $600K and $800K, respectively.
Wait…lemme get this straight. Comparing one of our QB’s to a QB who won the Heisman, a National Championship, starting and winning in the NFL is an insult?
Tough crowd.
re: Wulff’s dismissal……
“We have the lowest annual giving numbers by far in the Pac-12 Conference and I feel we have apathy in our fan base,” Moos said. “That is primarily the reason for the change I made.”
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7294814/washington-state-cougars-fire-paul-wulff-football-coach
Happy Birthday Grandma Jean!
Well, add Jack Del Rio to the list. Don’t know if he needs to look for a job right now, tho.
Probably got a decent settlement.
re: Mack’s dismissal……
“We have the lowest annual giving numbers by far in the WAC Conference and I feel we have apathy in our fan base,” JD said. “That is primarily the reason for the change I made.”
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7294814/Hawaii-Warriors -fire-Greg- McMackin -football-coach
Ok, that’s pretty funny. haha.
Dennis McKnight is on the island.
He visited UH today after spending a season with the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL.
By the way, when McKnight left Edmonton, it was 20-degrees below, he said. I think that included the wind chill.
IWWTHM – comparing anyone to t-bot an scam is an insult.
Pedialite?
I wonder if Tomey would give up his job for McKnight, we need his energy level on the team.
TE’s in the future?
As is oft stated, the NFL is a copycat league. With the Niners’ success using Jim Harbaugh’s offense (that he brought with him from USD and Stanford) I would anticipate a rush for TE talent in the next couple of years with the trickle down effect being that there will be a premium on those body types on the wish lists at several AQ schools.
The very few who may fit that mold coming from (808) won’t be staying home and “rotsaruck” getting that type to come over.
Yeah, how dare someone say our QB’s could play in the NFL and win the Heisman!
The only way someone could make it worse is if they said that and were spending their vacation deworming orphans in Somalia. Scoundrels!
*Shaking Fist*
Too bad Hansen will not participate in the Senior Walk, aka Senior Recognition That Is Choreographed To Death And Is Now Boring And Drawn Out To The Point Of Being Pointless As A Way To Thank Every Senior Walk.
And . . . good afternoon Warriors!
Tru dat, wafan.
Mahalo Mr. Hansen.
Mr. Tsai . . .
Re: Yesterday’s blog post #370
I feel so special! Bet (there is that word!) other off-island Tsai-kos appreciate it as well.
Whoo-hoo!!!
Dunno what the issue was/is with Hansen but he is still a Warrior.
‘Attaway, Warrior!
Almost wish the Seniors would just start walking on their own right after the Alma Mater and make all the others wait til the fans are pau with their Mahalos.
#127 – Funny, compliance says you can’t use a student athlete to make money but yet UH does it all the time????? Senior Walk is nothing more than a sponsor making money off the students, it long ago lost the reason it started. It was started by the students athletes and it should be given back to them.
TV coverage of for the mainland news:
#144,
Liz . . .
Nah. Just getting tired of the kids being taken advantage. At least that is what it looks to be! Appearances and presentation are important even if your intentions are honorable.
Happens all over, too.
#143 what you now comedian
reminds me of the boy who when graduating from high school told his family he wanted to be a comedian. da portagee faddah when ask “boy why you like be one lizard”
WSU is officially looking for a new head coach, too.
Wulff had a tough job when he got there and sure cleaned up the program. I sure hope he lands where he will be appreciated.
Mahalo to Austin Hansen and good luck to you in whatever you do after leaving UH.
Good to hear that David Graves is feeling better. Healing energy to all of the banged up Warriors. Hope everyone is ready to play, even if they aren’t starting. Going to be a dog fight.
Lot of parents are in town, and have been in town, for these last 3 games. Hope to see some of them at our T-Gate.
GO WARRIORS!!! Beat BYU!
What? How much is the bus fare from UH to the stadium?
mih,
Free if you are a student…
The other day I asked if anybody under 21 who was drinking at the stadium got caught/arrested? And has anyone been arrested for the delinquency of a minor for offering beer to an underage drinker?
Did someone answer that?
Slugger…
Thanks.. I didn’t think they charged the students, too.
Is there a common blog for UH ? Where students congregate?
blog or forum.
check it out beginning today and leading up to saturdays game
da hype is getting intence
Looking at the Past Results and Schedule for this year 2011, What has happen since our first game against Colorado win by 34 – 17
What has happen to our Defense? But it’s our Offense that needed help
On October 1st game against LA Tech brought all the faith back with a score of 44 – 26
That should have been the score for rest of the opponents on schedule.
We need this last game against BYU. I hope they bring back the team that started with Colorado.
Warriors Flag was up at our house for the pass 3 weeks lost, so last week I didn’t put it up against Tulane and We Won. I’m not going to jinks it this week.
Go Warriors!
http://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/team/hawaii-warriors
Pssst Coach Tomey, try Corey Paclebar at punt returner.
btw is the colors for this game GREEN
Which of the thousand shades of green?
powderpuff…its time.
its time that we sneak in the white board for mr. stretch.
and mr. potato head.
i dare that nfa to kick him and all of his season tickets (5 teams)out of the stadium.
koakane…what bet you talking about?
Koakane – I didn’t lose a bet. I said that if the three UH teams won on a particular weekend, we would celebrate.
They did. The volleyball team won, the soccer team won, and the football team won – but there is no way to supply food if we are not attending the T-Gates because we are at other sports and community events. Cannot be in two places at the same time – basic physics.
I told you that weeks ago.
Will let folks know what DrDoc decides as to what he’ll be doing on Saturday. If he decides not to take part in the Kaneohe Christmas Parade, then he’ll be at the T-Gate by 9:30 am ready to make malassadas & coffee + heat up the teryaki chicken. If he decides to be in the parade with me, then we’ll bring cinnamon rolls to the Post-Gate. If we can figure out how to keep the chicken chilled for about eight hours, we’ll serve that as well.
I’ll catch a bus into town and transfer to another one out to the Stadium after the Parade ends around noon if he decides to go to the T-Gate.
koakane…game colors should be white, since, the superstitious coach that he is doesn’t want to change anything after our win last week.
Is the sleeping bag still in the coaches’ office?
Jim Donavan take note from the former AD of the Ducks now AD of WASU. Can the same be said for Hawaii?
Washington State needs to energize its fan base to help pay for extensive renovations to Martin Stadium.
Construction has started on an $80 million project to add premium seating, luxury boxes and a new press box. Also on the drawing board is a $60 million football operations building.
Moos, who as a consultant helped hire Wulff, said the fast-moving landscape of major college athletics made revival of the football program important.
“We’ve got to get the program in a position to compete and we’ve got to do it pretty quick, or we will be left in the dust,” Moos said.
Winning games will draw more fans and bigger donations from boosters, Moos said. Currently, donations do not even cover the costs of player scholarships at WSU, he said.
“I believe we can be a contender for championships,” Moos said. “But we can’t wait and embrace mediocrity.”
Interesting that in England, instead of a moment of silence, the fans do a minute of applause.
Of course, to those crazy Europeans, whistling has a different meaning, too.
Pomai,
Mahalo!
😀
Students – MIA.
JD should get to the bottom of this and fix what needs to be fixed to get the students back. People may say there’s no revenue lost since the student section is set aside as part of the deal for activity fees. The ramifications of the boycott goes further than it looks bad on TV to have so may empty prime seats.
A large %age of the original fan base was made up of UH alums who attended games as students. JD must know that every current student is a potential future supporter. I’m in my sixties, there’s only four of us left out of thirty something alums that had season tickets. Most have opted out for PPV a few have passed on.
My question is what percentage of current season ticket holders are alumi. Is this percentage increasing or decreasing over time. How does our alumi percentage compare to other schools.
If JD doesn’t know the answers he sould find out or charge someone else to.
Jm, maybe Donna and I will go with you. Message me on FB to discuss.
JM – TCC
Hiflyer – TCC not Hawaiian!
I’m in Vegas….the casinos floors are absolutely DEAD…looks like the point spread is BYU by 8….
Pomai:
d1 – are you trying to tell me to bring bp? 🙄
Good luck and Aloha to Austin Hansen!!! Always a true Warrior!!!
Could be! 😉
Rivals.comm says Illinois vs Nevada in the Sheraton Bowl. Warriors, see that? No respect. No chance? Get chance. Earn that respect. Geevvuummm! Geevvuummm! Geevvuummm! IMUA WARRIORS!!!!
JM, I second that emotion.
Illinois?!?!
How the heck is the Big 10 getting in the mix?
Beating BYU
Playing Illinois in the Hawaliday Bowl
Hmmmm
jm,
Bring bp, it’s ok.
CFN has Marshall v. Illinois
JM even though I am not a fan of BP over the last two years you have made it Hawaiian so bring’um
Drat! Electricity out in the Liliha area again.
This interrupting prime time NCIS and Sanctuary.
Worse, I have been waking with chills, sleeping 16 hours a day and have no energy. Not hungry too–now that’s the tip off.
Haven’t been sick since summer 2010–OK, that was for 8 weeks… But nothing since. Arghh!!!
jm,
Tom-WarriorNation is coming and he’s never had your bp. And the Pollards might be back; don’t know if they’ve tasted your concoction. I don’t think Annodah-Liz has tasted your bp, either. I think it’s destiny…
GO WARRIORS!!!
SteveM – NCIS = rerun. Get well soon!
JM – I’ve never tasted your BP either. We’ll take a delivery when you are on the way to the stadium. PP, Al and I thank you in advance.
Stretch – you PP, Al could always make a appearance at the tailgate after the game seeing how you can’t stay in the parking area.
Stretch – if there’s any left…
Stretch, you can have my piece!
Unfortunately, you would have to share with PP and Al, otherwise might cause a riot.
Hey! Somebody mention BP? I see your BP and raise you one bowl Lomi Salmon.
Get well SteveM
Get well quick SteveM.
STEVEM – take care!!!
Thanks folks!
Got a few days to game time yet…
Boycott from students?
Is a lose lose situation = lose. Everyone loses.
Is a win lose situation = lose. A few will feel like then won but in the long run everyone loses something.
Is a win win situation = win. Everyone should win and so will the Warriors.
Let me share my meaning of the win win situation. Those who are boycotting will feel like they are doing it to someone which in turns creates negativity and by going to the game become bigger than the problem. They will feel better by supporting and cheering for someone other than their negative feelings that is harbored by the boycott. The team will feel the energy and in turn radiate the energy back to all the fans making it a win situation. AND hopefully it equates to winning the game too.
There are better ways to handle the problems if there is a problem, rather than implementing this boycott. Looking at the glass half full. Optimistic rather than pessimistic. You the students of UH are the future leaders of society. Hope to see that section full for the BYU game and I do hope whatever problem there maybe is solved in a better positive fashion.
If the boycott is a mere rumor and holds no water my apologies for being philosophical.
7:30 PM ET on ESPN2/ESPN3 – Just set my DVR. Thank you ESPN. Gonna miss you when we join the Mountain Waste.
SteveM ~ Did you take your FLU shot?
No?…ok, you’re benched! STephen, you’re in for Steve.
I doubt there’s an organized boycott.
First, when have students ever been in unison about anything? Look at the turnout for ASUH elections. When there was a hearing to determine whether a student fee should be imposed, it was mostly very, uh, experienced graduate students protesting. And the ASUH president. Students are smart. But when you’re young, you do have other options, and face it, this has been a crummy home schedule so far.
And second, if this is a boycott, it’s the worst publicized one. The first rule of a boycott is to let people know there’s a boycott. Second, let people know why there’s a boycott, or what you want in return.
At least when Gigi boycotts us every 15 months or so, she leaves some clues.
Of course, one of her pouts was when she thought Greg Alexander should be the starting quarterback. Another reader took offense. Hold-me back, hold-me back and then … whoosh. Gigi was gone. And, lo and behold, Alexander was the starting quarterback.
Someone said to double the activity fee and keep raising it until the seats are filled.
Kind of made sense to me… 😉
Get well, all ailing ones.
Nitey nite and Tsweet Warrior Dreams!
I interviewed Riley Nelson today, and he said he has been cleared to practice Wednesday.
He said he hopes to practice well enough Wednesday and Thursday to convince the coaches he should reclaim his starting job. He said if they feel he’s not 100 percent, he won’t play Saturday. But he expects to play Saturday.
Rolovich does have scores of great plays (with great names).
Time to open up the cupboard.
I don’t think UH needs to use all of the plays; just give the illusion that an innovative play is a possibility.
It’s like the slap bet on the “How I Met Your Mother.” Anticipation is worse than the actual slap.
Amazing what a bye week will do for the ailing, eh?
Maybe Rolovich has too many plays? Sort of like Aranda? should they simplify? …
With Graves not practicing until Wednesday, isn’t it too late to implimate some trick plays. Without enough practice, it may backfire. I sure wished they did it during the season just to keep the other team off balance, like running the ball once in a while. Even Alabama does trick plays.
jm1111…you could always stash some on the side.
hint, hint.
i just wish that mack would give rolo free reign over the offensive play calling.
“bumbai u lern”
I got my flu shot months ago.
I fully expect to be good to go this Saturday.
But if I’m not 100%, the head coach might bench me.
…and if she does, she won’t cook goodies for the tailgate… 🙄 🙁
It’s a COMPLETE injustice what happened to Austin Hansen.
The story is sickening, the side that I have heard directly and not from second hand or third hand either.
SOMEONE’S GONNA PAY. SOMEONE HAS TO PAY FOR THIS.
stevem…head coach?
head coach.. isn’t that a psychoanalyst?
Good night, gang!
Get well all ailing peoples.
GO WARRIORS!!!
nite all!
I am completely lost with the Hansen story. Have no idea why he was suspended (it was an NCAA suspension right?). Is it juicy stuff?
Any insight, or is it off limits?
