• David Graves, who was replaced after being “dinged up” against Tulane, remains as the No. 1 quarterback and is expected to start against BYU on Saturday. Head coach Greg McMackin said Graves will not resume throwing until Wednesday. (Tomorrow’s schedule involves an hour of video reviews and strategy meetings, and an hour of practice.)
• McMackin said cornerback Mike Edwards will start Saturday, although he will undergo shoulder surgery after the Warriors’ last game. McMackin said he was assured Edwards will not incur further injury by playing.
• Scott Harding’s availability is not certain. He has a sprained ankle.
• But slotback Miah Ostrowski and defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu are good to go.
• The Warriors will wear the combination of black/green jerseys and white pants for Saturday’s game against BYU.

Recruiting is very important to the success of any program. That being said, sometimes, and more often then not, the HC has to be like an “Iron Chef”. In other words, it is his responsibility to create a fantastic faire with what may be surprise ingredients, some of his choosing, some a bit of a surprise.
JJ did it the year after he took over from his predecessor. Folks thought that the pantry was bare and to our surprise, JJ whipped up quite a feast. True Iron Chef stuff.
So, I believe the question that many are asking is, do we have an Iron Chef at the pay scale or do we have a cafeteria manager at an Iron Chef level of compensation. Both can prepare a faire, but is it what is expected.
I do not believe any of the bloggers are questioning the ingredients that go into the preparation. What may be at the heart of the questioning may be, is that the right presentation.

Just out of curiosity who is our Defensive Backs coach? I feel like we need some sort of a change in philosophy in that area. We have way too much talent to be performing so poorly…

McMackin had a good plan on recruiting. He started camps. He hired a full-time recruiting coordinator. He made written agreements on scholarship offers (binding for the school, not the players). He also tried to space out the classes for each position.
Trouble was UH faced a lot of competitive recruiting. Secure a verbal commitment early, other schools jump on the prospect (2009).
Try to hide interest, other schools insist UH isn’t showing enough love (2010).
Next year will be the first real senior class of the tenure; the recruiting program can be fully judged at that point.

And now Mack had to face uncertainty. How are you going to recruit with that over your head? You either commit to a coach or your don’t. Uncertainty kills programs.
Keep him, don’t keep him. Decision should have been made months ago.

I would love to go to UH every home game I cant because I ALWAYS work on saturdays an finish at game time but I always LISTEN to it on the radio an am proud of our boys keep playing hard! The one thing I disliked from the Mac era is that our teams NEVER had that same KILLER instinct that UH had during the June Jones era during the Mac era we could have a 2 or 3 td lead an they would get to laid back an let the other team into the game to many times we let other teams get back in it no killer instinct an hasnt been able to close out games that has happened in 3 games this year that we lost.

ST- First of all, the idea that a recruiting class can only truly be evaluated after 4 years is at best ridiculous. Second, if we were competing for recruits with former-selves (or uh hilo) then your praise of McMackin’s “plan on recruiting” would be warranted. BUT since we are competing for recruits against mainland schools, its just not going to cut it. JJ said it when he was here, and although there have been minor improvements (e.g. practice field, aloha stadium turf), we still have a loooong way to go to match the facilities of mainland schools. Not talking USC or Oregon, just middle of the road mainland football programs. Who can blame guys like Manti Te’o for not wanting to spend 4 years lifting weights in our old rusty weight room? The entire culture of uh football has become LAZY since JJ left. JJ had no secret recruiting formula, he simply found athletes that fit his system and honestly pitched what we had. McMackin should have been (at best) an interim coach. Were paying him waaay to much to be as bad as he is (PAY HIM 500K AND PUT THE REST INTO FACILITIES!!!). The only saving grace to his HC tenure was a 10 win season he had with JJ’S RECRUITS!

I’m still gonna support UH though an as long as Mack is UH’s coach I’ll still support him. He should just let the offense do its job though an not always take the foot off the pedal especially when the game is still in the early 4th quarter. Just play hard 60 minutes straight. But Mac has done a good job academically. Keep supporting Hawai’i Bleed Green.
Sparkling athletic training facilities have their place, but it’s the people running the program that seal the deal on a recruit signing his LOI. BTW, USC’s weight room, from what people have told me, is nothing special. I would say that UH’s strength and conditioning program does a good job under Tommy Heffernan. Nothing wrong with rusty weights – a 365 lb power clean is still a 365 lb power clean – IMHO.

I believe that a “blue chip” player will commit to a school becaue he/she wants to be there. Manti did not truly want to go to UH so no matter what the facilities looked like, he would have still gone away. Timmy Chang wanted to stay home, even though the facilities looked like crap. I’m not saying that Manti and Timmy are on the same level, but when Timmy was coming out of St. Louis he was being looked at by mainland recruiters.
Kanani Danielson could have gone to any college and started and could have been their star. She chose to stay home (I believe that Wahine Volleyball’s success had a lot to do with that) and we’ve lost a bunch to “big name” colleges away.
If the shine and sparkle is #1 on the recruit’s chart as to why attend a school, you may want to pass on that one. I’d rather go after that “Corey Parades” type player who wants to play for the Warriors, who has size and potentially developmental skills to recruit.
Those who are coming because we’re their 3rd or 4th choice, I’d rather not spend time. They may be harder to motivate and may be more willing to blame others for his/her poor performance (due to a lackluster self-preparation, blamed on “poor facilities”).
This weeks game against BYU is “The Game of the Year” for us Warriors.
Lets fill the stadium for BYU game first and NO PPV till then… Kidding aside…
But I do hope the students comes back for this last game at Aloha.

#43 True, absolutely agree. But if no the kala to make pretty for that 17 year old with sparkle in his eyes, why beat the dead horse and wish for what will not come. Focused attention may get us a better result as we do not seem to be able to create Nebraska’s weight room in Hawaii. BSU seemed to have been able to win without the big name (now they can go after that blue chipper).
Or look at Vaughn Meatoga. He made his intentions regarding coming to UH clear since he was at KS Kapalama. Then he showed up, worked his butt off, fought through adversity and became the star he is today. A model recruit who has become a model Warrior.
Another tremendous example is Richard Torres.
We need more guys like those, because it won’t be facilities or “Super Star” recruitment which brings folks like them in. It will be because they want to represent Hawaii and play for the people and the state they love.

Maybe all this fire Mack talks should stop already. I have my opinions about whether he should stay or go, and about the amount he is paid. Reality is, he still has a year left on his contract. Re-structure his contract for his final year. Part of me wants a new coach, but part of me wants to see how he recovers from this unexpected down year.
Afterall, coaches don’t overthrow passes, drop balls, blow coverages, or miss tackles. Sure, a lot of this could fall under discipline and lack of leadership, but at a certain point, players need to be held accountable for their play too. I know that people on this blog get very touchy about blaming players, but holding someone accountable is not blaming.
For recruiting sake, maybe we just keep Mack and see how he recovers? (. . . ducking and holding my ears waiting for a response)
BSU had tremendous success before being known as a big time football program. But they had something that we don’t have. A GREAT HEAD COACH (and potatoes haha)

The amount of backlash against Coach Mack is amazing, even though he has raised grad rates and still has a winning overall record. Why aren’t people at least half as critical of the majority of our poor state government leadership? Talk about predictable, not creative, don’t want to change, etc.

Why can’t they write up an extension contingent on a number of things…
Write up a base pay both sides can live with with bonuses beyond a certain number of wins. 600K +75K for every win over 7 (since 7 gets us into the bowl), with 50K to the head coach, and 25K divided among the assistant/associate coaches. Money shaved off of the initial salaries should then be earmarked for maintenance/replacement of football related equipment and facilities, emergency recruiting expenses, marketing, and tutors.
Beyond the 7 wins, the house starts to fill and 75K-100K per win thereafter becomes quite reasonable. Can we do more for the athletes than just omelets after a win? Up it after the 6th win. Bonuses for higher graduation rates should apply as well as deductions for lower graduation rates. Set the academic standard and keep it.
Chow getting the boot at UCLA may have been a blessing in disguise.

UofO is an extreme example of an alum coming thru for his Alma Mater but the form holds in many instances where the $$$ for facilities comes from donors with deep pockets who but into a program and the HC who leads it.
Before Hawaii went to Gainesville I posted a story about UF’s new addition to their stadium that was primarily funded by a single donor. These folks want their name associated with a winner and need to be sold on that by the HC’s vision and results.

In other seasons where average attendance would have bee 34-36K, a rainy night might have the attendance dip to 32-33K.

We went 10-4 last season.. nothing wrong with that. Two bowl games in three years, again, nothing wrong with that. It’s the PR behind it all that is hurting the Warrior program. The key administrators aren’t visible… who besides the Coaches are really making a plug for the program? All you hear from everyone else is.. “we need money.. money.. money..” It’s not pleasant.

That is your opinion, but in my mind and the minds of others as well, no heap of marketing or freebies will draw the crowds to the 35K+ range with the way things have been.
The Hawaii Bowl loss to Tulsa was damaging and was the third BLOW OUT on national TV and there is something wrong with that and any momentum gained early on was lost with the UNLV mishap. The mood began to change drastically then, you can easily tell from the masses attending the Wahine volleyball match hours later. Then add on the non-sense BS about point shaving and what do you get? Barely 20K in the stands.
Marketing could have done this and done that. No one disagrees with that.
A while back someone said that putting okoles in the seats is NOT part of the head coach’s job, but attendance is a direct and IMMEDIATE result of winning and providing a product people can stand by. If attendance wasn’t a factor in a coach’s job, then incentives formed around attendance would NOT be a result.
Am I letting UH marketing off the hook? Yeah I guess so, but marketing only goes so far. Keep advertising golden roses and after a while the customers will say, hey, this is just s— on a stick.

Today’s fans only care about wins and losses. Back when we use to go we didn’t care about who we played win or lose, we went to just watch the Game and support the team.

Kevin is on such a roll that I don’t have to post. He’s stating what I’ve been “suggesting” for a while and I believe he’s nailed it.
That blow out to Tulsa was inexcusable given the success the team enjoyed up to and going into that bowl game. IT left a sour taste that “sort of” went away and hopes sprang anew with the new year and what looked like another great run. Then with the disasterous stumbles along the way through what was reported as the weakest rated schedule in the D-1 ranks, brought up massive “acid reflux-like” comments.

We have already seen football teams making coaching changes as soon as the season ends.
IMO, if Hawaii loses to BYU and the season is over I don’t see Mack returning for his final season. If Hawaii wins, miraculously I might add, and make it to the bowl game I think Mack will be able to finish his contract. However, next season will be his last season and we will get another coach for the 2013 season, UNLESS Hawaii wins the MWC conference championship which the odds are heavily against. Against BYU this week I look at the matchups and I look at the schedules the teams have played and how teams are playing the last 3 to 5 games. BYU has played a much far superior schedule than UH, no question. I biggest difference is BYU’s offensive and defensive lines are much stronger than UHs. BYU can run the ball with 3 goood running backs and they have a sophomore QB who was a 5 star player who was highly touted, plus a senior QB who went to Utah St. in 2007 (who was a starter against Colt Brennan) who is an athlete who can scramble and is tough as nails by the name of Nelson. He must be in his mid 20s and is married and mature. Meaning, stability. BYU is solid all around and Bronco Mendenhall is a very good coach. They lost to Texas on the road by 1 point, a game I watched and BYU led the entire game until the last couple of minutes. I hope somehow, UH will win the game I also hope the home field will help the team get jacked up and inspired to play over their heads and anything and happen and the fans will be into it. But, realistically, you have to say that this will be a very tough ball game to win. BYU beat Idaho and New Mexico St. both 42-7 the last 2 games, teams that UH struggled to win. You can disagree with me, but I look at the stats over 11, 12 games and the competition they have played. I’m still pulling for Hawaii to win, just like when Garret Gabriel was the UH killer. Remember the t-shirts made a long time ago. We are tailgating close of the entrance of the stadium and all of a sudden we see this t-shirt that says FU BYU. People get fired up and the intensity is very, very high. But, we can’t play the game, the players will have to do it on the field.
I was under the impression that USC sells out every home game. I was wrong.
I mean they do get their 80,000 or more fans and do sell out rivalry games, but they do not fill that place to capacity of 93,000 the entire season.

Fmr UH HC Bob Wagner said that he came to realize that there are also a good number of Mormons who are UH fans.
Got an uncle in Utah (BYU hater) who says that you’ll sometimes see info in people’s obituaries that reads – Hobbies: “Loved seeing BYU lose in any sport.”

An additional comment or two: The Ching Complex facilities upgrades are on their way – $10 million has been released, bid requests have been issued, and contracts will be awarded in early 2012. Construction will be begin within a month of the awards – assuming that no one files a formal challenge.
Again – Operating and Capital Improvement Budgets are separate – money cannot be transferred from one to the other – so talking about reducing McMackin’s pay by more than 50% and transferring it to facilities improvements is not legal.

I still remember the BYU game in 1990 when we routed BYU 59-28 on December 1st and on same day earlier, BYU Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy.

Wouldn’t that have been something? You could probably sell your tickets for 5x its face value and be willing to buy it back for double after you realize what you just gave up. To dream the impossible dream.

I never said that winning doesn’t sell tickets. But in those off seasons, the powers above gotta pull together and demonstrate their support for the fans to feel at ease.
But Hawaii fans are pretty fickle. Even in 2006, it took us all the way to the Purdue game for the house to get packed. Hawaii had to get to 9-2 to start filling the house. Fortunately they won their bowl game and kept winning the following season. But even then, the house was pretty tame when we played the lower ranking WAC teams and Charleston Southern.
What got to me then was JJ saying something about we won’t see another perfect season in our lifetimes

Getting rid of PPV would help those numbers a lot, as well. BUT getting rid of PPV is not an option. At least not yet. If it doesn’t help us in the MWC, then maybe it should be terminated. Maybe PPV should be limited to theaters and head counts taken with part of the proceeds going directly to the Athletic Department so that it can be counted as an off-campus stadium instead of your typical PPV revenue. Then maybe Hawaii would be able to keep that part of the PPV revenue and not be forced to throw it into the MWC pool. We could count the number of heads in attendance there, too. Maybe for Hawaii, off-campus, theater type stadiums are our future and a smaller 35K sit-in stadium with ample parking a better fit.
We are a spoiled people with limited disposable income. I drive to town but once.. maybe twice a month cause I hate traffic. I don’t like driving at night, too, especially on weekends with inebriated drivers on the road. I hate paying for parking and will only go to Chinatown on Sundays. Cost of gas has gotten us to limit our photo shoots to perfect days with little vog… and even then, we plan around the shoot to take care of shopping needs.
My parents are gone so I no longer have a place to park my car near the stadium. The earliest we get off on Saturdays is 3:30pm… by the time we get to the stadium we need to park pretty far away cause there simply isn’t any parking left. Usually we work evenings on Saturdays when the game is on. We could probably switch for a weekend or two but then we’d end up working the slow days with no sales. We work on commissions only – so no salary = greater hardships, and $120 in tickets and gas suddenly look like $200.

Doesn’t it concern anyone that the coaches and trainers at the college level still allow their players to play the following week after getting a concussion? Anyone with half a brain could see that Graves was out of it during the after game press conference. Our coaches allowed the same thing with Moniz after his head injury. Geez…it only takes one hit too soon afterwards and it’s lights out. I would hope our coaches looked out for the student athletes better than this. At least high school takes this more seriously now. Whatever happened to the receiver for Stanford?…he got carted off in a stretcher after getting hit in the head week after week. Not good…not good at all.

The secondary is coached by Rich Miano, but the secondary schemes which tie into the defensive schemes are decided by Dave Aranda. I know Rich takes a lot of heat anytime someone catches a pass, but he is not deciding game strategy. During the Washington game Aranda’s goal was to stop the run so he moved up the safety’s for run support. Washington suspected that and opened the game throwing the ball. By the time we adjusted the damage was done. Much of the problems in the secondary can be traced to a poor pass rush. Aranda is also very conservative when it comes to blitzing. Overall though I believe the defense has played well most of the time with the main problem being and underpowered offense.
Just got off the phone – here’s a quick update on the Aloha Stadium concession contracts: The deadline for submitting proposals to provide food & beverages is tomorrow by 2 pm. The final decision will be announced shortly effective January 1, 2012.
I was unable to find out if Sodexo (sp?) will be submitting a bid or if CenterPlate will be submitting a renewal bid. However, that information should be available by Wednesday morning. I am aware of the fact that the new contract has been the subject of several recent Executive Sessions during the regular meetings.

Being a consistent winner in college football is hard. Over the past 33 seasons since joining the WAC UH has had more winning seasons than losing, but the most sustained success has been putting together 4 winning seasons in a row. When you think about it that is not great.
If you want to know the secret to Boise State’s success the answer is 14, which would be their consecutive winning seasons.
If UH really wants to build back a solid attendance base I think we need to string together 6 or 7 years of winning seasons. Not necessarily 10 win seasons, but at least 8 wins out of a 13+1 game season. Hawaii has never, in the modern era, had a coach who won 3/4 of their games. Getting to .75 over the long term would be impossible, but for a stretch it can be done. Maybe targeting .65 consistently would be good. Only June Jones has done that since going Div 1. No other coach has hit .60
Despite all of that Hawaii has consistently been near the top of the WAC in terms of attendance.

if the media blew it out of contex, then the media is to blame; but he, the player, did not critize the press and kept up his rant about not playing for UH and smiling all the way.

as I posted earlier, it’s not difficult to tell UH “no” in a nice,positive manner that he wants to play for a BCS school on the mainland, but also tell UH coaches that he would not mind returng home if it does not work out. Some have done it and it has been in the media that UH coach will accept them back.
I would be very surprised/disappointed if UH would not allow a “local boy” who wants to come home and play for the Warriors – only exception I know of is the ILH player and family who blasted UH privately and publically and Coach Mack turned him down. Too bad because I thought he played well in HS and would have contributed to UH DLine this year and next.

In offering scholarships, it must be gut wrenching on who will get a “free ride” and who does not.
It always appears that the majority of the “local boys” are the “walk-ons”; relatively few from the outside. To be sure, there are the noteable exceptions like Colt who walked on, but JJ knew that Colt would be given a scholarship soon.
I believe it’s the “walk-ons” who bring the most stability to the UH football team.
BTW, is it against NCAA rules that every student athlete gets a “training table meal” each and every day of school? Including all “walk-ons”?

Funny how back in the 80s and 40K plus attendance at UH games, fans were much more well behaved. Seemed to be more beefs and brawls in the stands into the 90’s. We had 40,000 in the Eighty’s because season tickets were $96.00, parking was $3.00, and we could sneak in all the beer and pupu’s we had into the stadium. That’s why it was so crowded and fun. Now the stadium parking opens late, closes early, with the motorcycle police chasing everyone out. Now they search your bags, charge $8.00 a beer, and 40 bucks a ticket. I miss excitment of the game, but not the hoops you need to jump through just to enjoy tailgating and a game. PPV is easier for us old men.

Three parking stories for professional games on the mainland.
– in the 80’s went to the Coliseum to watch the Raiders. Off the freeway and right into the parking lot. I forget how much the fee was. Directed to a stall right against the fence facing the stadium and about 30 steps from the gate. The Colliseum looked empty until they announced the attendance at over 50,000!
– About 8 years ago I went to see the Raiders again in Oakland and parked at a local business outside the parking lot. Paid $20 and walked almost a mile to the gate.
– Also about 7 or 8 years ago went to Miami to watch the Heat. Someone else was driving and again went direct from the off-ramp into the parking lot. I caught a glimpse of the sign going in and thought, “Hey, $2.50 for parking. Not bad.” Then everyone else started handing over fives and tens to the driver and I realized the sign said $25.00 😯
…ask Stretch about parking at New Cowboy Stadium. das one shocka!

South End Zone season tickets this year was $120.00, parking $5 a game. Who needs to drink beer to enjoy the game? Tailgate before and afterwards no problem. No money, drink water.
The national guard guys that came to the games that sat behind us use to sneak in those tiny bottles of Jack Daniels and bought a pepsi and viola cocktails. There used to be a whole crap load of tiny bottles, a lot of of good fun yelling and high fiving, and some wobbly folk after games. I used to wonder how they got so many bottles in without it clinking together. and making a whole lot of noise..lol. I guess where there is a will there is a way. Go Warriors!

You hit the bullseye. For the middle class family, season tickets and $3 parking was affordable. Musubi, okazu, and cold beer and soda made for a great pre-game picnic. You could afford to take the kids and grand kids. Come game time you could pack up the leftovers, boiled peanuts and head to your seats, where friends would greet you and together you would cheer, jeer and have a great time.
The Aloha Stadium should designate the first game of the season as family day, where all non-season tickets would be $10. Season ticket printed value would be $10. Parking would be $5 but no restricted VIP sections. Allow edibles into the stadium. Charge $3 a beer and $1 sodas.
Give away Hawaii rain panchos to anyone with an orange section ticket.
Have UH Regents, staff, faculty, cheerleaders and other team athletes at every gate to greet and thank the attendees.
Sell non-premium location season tickets at the game for $20/game printed value. Have the UH Band march and play around the parking lot with mascot and cheerleaders to sell vouchers for these non-premium seats.
Place the band at the ticket office gate entrance and unload the team at the front and walk into the Stadium greeted by our fight song.
Show some real Aloha and give the game back to the fans!

UH has no choice but to fire Coach Mack after Saturday’s game against BYU. Win or lose! Major disappointment with the lofty expectations at the start of the season. 3-4 in the WAC! Come on JD, this is against one of the weakest conferences in college football.
If Kansas can fire Turner Gill with 3 years and $6.0 Million left on his contract, JD needs to move right now. College football is a money making entity and Mack ain’t bringing in the mulla right now.
Sure Mack is owed $1.1 Million next year but look at the ramifications if he’s still coaching. Drop in attendance of 9,000 for each home game equates to approximately $315,000 (9000 tx @ $35/avg) per game or $2.2 Million over the season. In 2012, UH has a crummy home schedule with non-conferences games against Lamar, South Alabama, and a yet to be named opponent. MWC will be weakened with the expected (?) loss of Boise and Air Force to the Big East. We’re surely not talking about a murderers row schedule with the MWC left overs (Wyoming, Col. St., New Mexico, S. Diego St, and UNLV). Who in their right mind would want to see a mediocre Warriors football team against mediocre competition? Not so bad if UH was dominating and blowing out their competition on a weekly basis at least the games would be entertaining from the home fans perspective. Been a season ticket holder (4 tickets) from 1983 and this has been one of the lowest years not counting the Freddie 0-12 nightmare! Won’t be renewing my tickets if things don’t change at UH! Not a bandwagon fan also, just a pissed off fan who’s had enough with the clowns over at UH!
UH will probably move at a snails pace in deciding Macks future. What else can we expect, it’s Hawaiian Time! Whether UH keeps Mack, it’s already to late, decision should have been made months ago. Recruiting is shot for the upcoming year and most likely the following year as schools are already making the connections with the class of 2013 recruits.

I have been going to UH football for 48 years. My last game in person was in 2009. I was just giving my opinion why we no longer have 40,000 students and fans come to the game. I know we need to support the team by going to the game, but some of us no longer can do it in person. I know I feel bad watching an empty stadium on PPV.
I like Palolo and Ala Wai’s comments about yesteryear at the stadium. Brings back great memories.

Sorry for being such a uniform junkie, but I like to talk about it. Liz, imagine though, the white pants they have now with the green on the back, together with the white jerseys with green print on the shoulders. Throw a white helmet in there with a green H logo, and you’re in business.
I just think it is visionary and meaningful to the players and some fans. I accept that others could care less about uniforms. Just kind of a thing for me.

A Board Member of the UCLA Athletic Foundation (and head of their investment committee) was staying here at the house a while back. I presumed upon our friendship to ask him if he would have problem describing how it was done at UCLA and if I could invite several of my UH contacts. Head of AKA, Head of UH Athletics Annual Giving, and a UH Foundation Development Officer came over and we had an hour and a half of his time (vacation time I might add). It was quite enlightening. Each board member antes up $25k per year to sit on the board. All board members have a quota of fundraisers to attend/host. Board members accompany coaches to fundraisers and media events. There are scheduled functions for fundraising where all board members attend. It is highly organized and highly productive.

The Head of the Aztec Athletic Foundation (AAF) was my mentor the first go around in grad school. He was vacationing on Maui when I was with Na Koa. I called and asked him for an afternoon to discuss athletic fundraising and hopped a flight to Kahalui (I paid for the ticket out of my own pocket Tom Mui). He outlined much of the same as the UCLA contact. SDSU AAF Board Members (50 in number) ante is $10k per year. Each Board member is responsible for raising $25k on his/her own from personal contacts. There are 4 major fundraisers per year and board members attend each one to ‘circulate’ with the guests and build relationships. Board Members also attend media events with coaches. Fundraising events also are held outside of the greater San Diego County where SDSU has alums and have past recruiting success (many travelled to New Orleans to throw a fundraiser with help from a SDSU grad and New Orleans hometown player you might recognize (Marshall Faulk). A major fundraiser held recently just cleared over $100k in one evening aboard the USS Midway).
Both friends emphasized how important it is to reach out to alums and get into areas where you have a high number of alums as well as past players. They also emphasized the importance of bringing former players/swimmers/gymnasts et al back to athletic contest on a regular basis, to recognize them in the stands, and give them a chance to mingle with fans
Sometimes it is a good thing to look at how it is done at other schools.

CBS showed a clip of the Ohio (not state) players entering the locker room when they found out they were getting their long awaited black unis (which look a lot like Hawaii’s). Man, the excitement on those kids faces was something to behold. It meant something to them. They then came out and smashed their opponent.

Correct me if I’m wrong, or missing something. Trying to put things in perspectivem from the turnaround year by Coach Jones, followed by the ’06 & ’07 seasons, to now.
~1999~
1) We only had 3 road games, and won them all.
2) We finished the regular season 8-4, and topped it off with a win over Oregon State in the bowl game. SoS = 91 out of 114.
3) No opponent was prepared for the RnS the way Coach Jones runs it, so I’d like to think we gave opposing DC’s lots of headaches and surprises that first year.
~2000~
4) Coach Jones followed up that year with a 3-9 record, (SoS = 90 out of 116)… losing all road games AND getting blown out in the opener against D-IAA Portland State. (I think this was Timmy Chang’s first year.)
~~~ Fast forward to 2006 & 2007 seasons and beyond~~~
~2006~
5) Finished regular season 10-3, and topped it off with a win over Arizona State in the bowl game. SoS = 93 out of 119.
6) Colt has a monster season, and announces he will return for 2007, creating even more buzz.

7) A magical perfect 12-0 season. (Someone buys out of game, and we get stuck with 2 D-IAA games… SoS = 109 out of 120)
8) Coach Jones, Colt, & Company grad/depart. Even with so much skill positions leaving, expectations are sky high for next year.
~2008~
9) Had to rebuild the offense in Coach Mack’s first year. Finished the regular season 7-6 (SoS 79 out of 120), and lost to ND in the bowl game.
~2009~
10) Had to rebuild the defense, as Coach Mack starts bringing in more and more RedShirt Freshmen, and less JC Transfers.
11) After all kinds of injuries, Bryant Moniz takes over and guides us to the brink of qualifying for another bowl game. We fall short, going 6-7 in the regular season. (SoS = 96 out of 120)
~2010~
12) Good team with hot skill players. Finished the regular season 10-3 (SoS = 83 out of 120). Fall to Tulsa 62-35 in bowl game.
13) After strong Seniors depart, somehow still picked to repeat as conference champs. But injuries once again take it’s toll… 6-6 so far (SoS = 118 out of 120). Need a win in the final game to go bowling.
Sorry, I left out the Sugar Bowl game v. Georgia in ’07 season.

I blame the fan turnout (or lack of) mostly on the state of the economy here in PHX, having one of the worse housing value drop in the nation the last several years, the product of having 4 professional sport teams – Cardinals, Dback, Suns & Coyotes – less $$$ to go around, and expectations of this years ASU team not being met (your fair weather fans). This year the stadium was sold out for the UofA game, University of Missouri game & USC drew over 61K. The hard core fan base is around 50K and ranked #47 (6-6 record) among college football teams in average attendance last year.
If you have a struggling program, no team is immune from ‘bandwagon fans’…maybe teams like Michigan, Texas, Alabama, Penn State, Ohio State won’t be affected as hard, attendance wise.
Can’t wait to the season ends – 5 days and counting! Aloha Mac!

@al…NO way I want Dickerson or Slick Rick! No way Uncle Norm would come to Hawaii. He is comfy and his kids are settled in Manhattan Beach, California. His son Cameron had a baby July 2010. Cam is a teacher at Mira Costa High School. But he is also an attorney and does all of Uncle Norms contracts. He loves kids so much. He was my daughters teacher last year. I want a bad okole guy like Charlie Strong. In only 2 years looks like his team will go to a BCS game. He runs a VERY tight program.

@83, regarding USC games. Lots of folks let their season tickets go due to Lame Kiffen, oops, I meant Lane Kiffen. Also LA economy is still in the toilet. Parking is 80 dollars for each game. And that is the kind of parking where you are not allowed to tailgate. Many folks in LA feel like I do, that Lane Kiffen is the only Coach who has failed his way to the top. They really wanted Monte so they had to take Lane and give him the job. It was the last FU that Mike Garrett gave us.

Without cutting and pasting it this is what I have to say about it:
There will be some that will be fist-pumping to his statement and those still willing to jump on his back and give the middle finger to ANYONE without regard to the FACTUAL results that have been displayed for all of Hawaii and the nation to see, but this statement is one of the MOST irresponsible things someone in his position can say considering the way things are.
It’s fine if any one of us says what he says and hell, call a spade a spade, but while we can agree to what he says in observation, the bottom line is as a HEAD COACH, you don’t crap on your audience like that.
This makes me think about Bob Nash’s situation towards the end of his coaching career at UH.
People can trash Bob Nash all they want to this day for his shortcomings as a head coach, BUT the man was ALL CLASS and anyone that respected him hurt a little when he got let go, but at the same time ACCEPTED the fact that he was not the one for the job and in that Bob Nash SHOULD be remembered as a class guy, didn’t get the job done, but was a class human being all the way to the very end.
Which STILL makes me sick that the “then” Star-Bulletin had the freakin NERVE to put that opportunistic photo of Nash with his head in his hands during a game with a bold headline reading: “FOULED-OUT” on the day after his firing was made public. Nash didn’t deserve that send off. BUT one guy right NOW is showing he is quite deserving of something along those lines…..
There is an age GAP on this blog and I KNOW and I JUST KNOW there will be people who will go on and say “YEAH!!! EFF THE STUDENTS!!!”, but those will have missed the point of my displeasure by a mile.
Then again, READING COMPREHENSION is not the strong suit of some people as I have seen.

The donors that UCLA and SDSU recruit do not look for private dinners or special ticket packages (I was told) . These donors see the postive relationship between the University, athletics, and the community. Either as a personal donation or via a corporate donation they enjoy the tax advantages of being a donor coupled with events that allow them to ‘mingle’ with past athletes and coaches. They attend athletic sponsored events: concerts, receptions, fishing charters, and themed parties. I believe they have even toned down the golf tourneys to a couple per year. Smaller, more frequent gatherings with the donors, board members, and donors are encouraged.

Board Members of Na Koa get paid NOTHING. They volunteer their time to support the team in more ways than just the amount of money they personally donate. There is no side perks for being on the board.
MIH – if you think you can give time away from your regular job and can do a better than what is being done, you are more than welcome to put your name in to be a board member.
Kevin, I read Reardon’s blog. Seems like the same few peeps making the same noise about Coach Mack. IMHO if you and the few dissenters show up at the game and “yell” as much for the team as against the coach, you’d raise the decibel level so high the other team will never hear the signals. Go Warriors!
Each board member brings their strengths. Some are good at fundraising, others are better at organizing functions. If there were fundraising quotas for each member, there wouldn’t be too many people who would volunteer their time and take the job.

Not dissing the Na Koa members, but there is something to installing Board members that make sizable donations. To start, it doesn’t have to be 25K or 10K or even 5K. It doesn’t even have to be their own money but some sponsor’s. Yet, it’s a vested interest that leads by example and warrants consideration. It could, however, be a start to a new tradition that snow balls into something greater. One-up-man-ship in a old boy’s club. You could have honorary seats, too. Donors who want to be in the ‘know’ but can’t expend the time. Nothing sells better than recognition.
It’s sad that a HEAD coach would make those kinds of comments.

If you start having people “buy” their way on to boards, it adds another layer of people who feel entitled to have their opinions followed. If they don’t get their way, there goes the money. It can be dangerous.
Between Kevin, Stretch and me anyone would be hard-pressed to find more devoted Hawaii football fans. Each of us has clearly stated positions that we support the student-athletes who are playing for the school and the State.
Mac has out-recruited JJ in one major area -quarterback. JJ would have a really good program if he was able to recruit a good QB. The ones he have are average, at best. Mac has six good ones. Mac has also done well in recruiting receivers and linebackers. Trevor Davis is one. Time will tell about Cecil Doe and Chris Gant. Justin Clapp is another solid one. The only position where he has failed in getting a pair of good ones is defensive end. And the one glaring mistake he made was in 2009 when he did not recruit offensive linemen. He waited to 2010. Thus, there is a gap. Overall, Mac has recruited well for a team in the WAC. This past recruiting season, the WAC, as a conference, failed to recruit a single four-star player. Face it, the WAC is not on top of everyone’s list. It won’t get much better in the Mountain West where the best teams are leaving for greener pastures. Even with Fresno, Nevada and Hawaii leaving the WAC, the WAC will out-recuit the Mountain West. Why? The addition of the two Texas schools. More Texas players will have an interest in the WAC. The Mountain West cannot consistenly find success in recruiting there and will rely heavily on finding players in California where they have to compete against the PAC 12.

Agree with indecision killing recruiting. But what can you do when the system is set up for things like this to happen. How can so many other schools get it right and not UH?
Like I said before, comments about the coach and any changes should wait till after the last game of the season. We should be giving support to the young men who will strap it up on Saturday and play their guts out for pride and the chance to extend their season one more game… The team is everyone including the coach. The point that I think a lot of people have been trying to get at in regards to Mack and the fans, at least my point anyway, is that he should CARE about getting fans into the stands. A comment that claims Hawaii fans are spoiled and that he’ll make no plea to get them to come to the games is just another example of where he is lacking.
I have a deep respect for hardcore fans that have attended every game for years. I am envious of that. Though it may sound silly, it is one of my dreams to one of those fans. When I was a student at UH, I went to all the games. The fact that I have 3 children with no one to watch them on weekends leaves me watching the game by other methods. I watch EVERY game and I love the team. I always have and I always will.
Even those who only want to come to the game to watch a winning product are still fans. Mack should want all of us at the games. It wouldn’t hurt him to show it.
The students as a whole “own” those seats. UHAD needed money and the students are dishing it out and are paying for them.
I don’t believe UHAD should be selling those seats but instead should open it up to those in the less prime seats to sit there in a first come first served basis maybe after the 1st Q.
kev-1 there is a time for everything. Now is the time to support not start a revolution. Its divisive to attack the top of any organization at critical times. The ploy has been used countless times throughout history with devastating results. Usually its the innocent that suffer the most. You may succeed in bringing down the castle walls and in the case of UH football, end the careers of the seniors on a very sad note. Its also very difficult to restrain ones self when so passionate about a cause. To avoid this its best to be silent and allow the process to play out.
If there are any students reading this blog, I implore you to come to the game.
Do it for our players, experience this “forgotten” rivalry.
At today’s news conference, McMackin was asked about the lack of students at games, and he did say he missed them and they added a lot to the team.
I think he does tend to say things that are puzzling.
I’ve concluded he doesn’t speak well but he means well.
I think he’s in a situation where if people like him, they’ll support him; if they want him fired, they’ll look for every statement to back their feelings.
There have been, to be generous, questionable calls and game (and time) management this year. At the same time, I really don’t think he has anything against fans, cheerleaders, the band or the band’s parents. OK, I don’t think he likes Ferd (because Ferd doesn’t talk to him), but he’s neutral on Reardon (since they do talk to each other occasionally).

I would love to see as many fans as possible in the house on Saturday to support the only ones in the stadium who can win the game. It’s important that the Hawaii fans show up whether it rains or not.

Actually the biggest factor in getting things right is how much money you have. It would be a mistake to believe UH is one of the few schools which gets things wrong. Check out the SEC or Big Ten blogs. Their fans don’t think their schools get anything right unless they are in contention for a national title. That’s the nature of sports. If you kept up with the Fresno State blogs last year they were complaining why Fresno was stuck with Pat Hill while UH was able to get top notch coaches very quickly. In fact most of the other WAC team blogs were saying the same thing. How fortunate you are many times depends on which grass hill you are on.
On another note, it’s kinda nice not having to talk about conference realignment and how screwed UH will be in the process.
Even if for a time I enjoyed the “drama”.
So, we going to the Big East? 😛
By the way, how about the job the OL did on the 5 wide sets. It took some faith in the OL and QB from the coaches, and stout play to make it work. That 5 yard pass for a 1st down to Paclebar came at a critical time. I know the playbook will be wide open this Saturday. Focus and execute, boys! GO WARRIORS!

The best public speaker/communicator we’ve had as a D1 coach is Tomey by a mile. Second Von Appen. JJ third, too many uh, uhs. Wags and Mack can’t put their thoughts clearly into words.
The two best public speakers/communcators we’ve had at UH were guys named Dobelle and Frazier. Really good extemporaneous speakers. Very convincing. Heard they recently sold Kaho’olawe back to a Native Hawaiian group.

It’s past the point where winning would make a difference for some fans. The team could trash BYWho, whip JJ’s butt into oblivion in the bowl game, and yet some would still be whining and crying that Mack should be fired, using every little mistake in the game as a reason that he should go.
Anytime a coach is fired, there will be players that say that they are the ones who didn’t deliver, not the coach. Read what AlaWai wrote, and remember it.
UCLA and Arizona State fired their HC with at least one game to play. Tulane made the change in mid season. I’m sure their administration had the school in mind when they made the decision to terminate their HC contracts, their action reflected a need to move forward and let their base know that a new HC will be on board soon and recruiting will move forward.
Being nice, making nice, feeling empathy toward coach Mac won’t help recruiting if we wait until after the Sheraton Bowl to terminate his contract, if we do at all. Hawaii takes forever to hire a coach, the decision needs to be made now, and if change happens, it gives the administration time to hire a HC, and he in turn hires his staff (more delay) and they start recruiting (very, very late start-our built in excuse why we lost)

#329. You’re the only person that got it right. Lost in the coaching debate is the Seniors who’ve invested more in the program than any fan or platinum sponsor.
promote several military discount nights, one of which is Military night, and offer tickets in the yellow section for $10 while supplies last. I’d rather have the yellow sections filled, why take the tack that unless someone pays the full price the seat remains empty. To claim that PPV makes up for the empty seats is mind boggling. Why not have a near capacity stadium plus PPV- Texas and other school with HDTV telecasts, including K State, generates additional income through their own PPV system, not to make up for empty seats.
JD got his masters in marketing from UH, the way he is counting the beans don’t add up to a balance budget, he needs a concept to generate more revenue rather than think, I got to cut staff, programs, etc to lower the deficit.

While I think the recruiting should be focus on high school graduating seniors, if there is a coaching change at this late date, we would have to go after the JC’s – something which our coaches prior to JJ had to do.
We should now solely concern ourselves in backing our Warriors.
The irony (and I never use that word correctly) is that about once a week, he’s making pleas to have more people attend games. But none of us report that anymore because 1) it’s not newsworthy, and 2) he says it every week. And he’s always praising fans for making noise, etc.
I think there are a lot of things people can criticize — and, it appears, money is the root of all frustration — but a coach wanting more fans at games isn’t one of them.
I’ve dealt with thousands of players, coaches, administrators, etc. Some people say stuff that makes you go, What?!?
#59 Wesside Warrior…..I support what you wrote. I too am amazed at all the negative comments towards Coach Mack and his staff and of the young student/athletes. I doubt if these negative bloggers ever coached a game in their lives and if some of them have than I’m sure and almost positive that their efforts were poor at best. Have you all forgotten when June Jones had a losing season that the boo birds started coming out and calling him a lousy coach and that we needed more running. Coach Wagner after a successful season struggled the following year. And yes the boo birds came out in force asking for his head. The big compliant was our team needed to pass more. Coach Mack has done a lot for the program with prioritizing academics and recruiting. I hope the powers to be who ever they are keep Coach Mack and ignore all you backseat coaches.

Maybe its worth giving Mack the benefit of the doubt on this one? I have a hard time believing he genuinely does not care about butts in the seats, the fans, the students. You know him a 10000x better than I do but I am gathering these feelings from that great meeting you helped to set up.
Tommui I am backing the Warriors, but i’m also concerned about the future of our program. Decisions need to be made, sooner than later, UH moves slowly in its decision making process and that hurts the program for many years.
Keeping coach Mac ends all debate, fire him, then UH scrambles to find a new coach when recruiting should be in full swing.

I have been fairly successful in getting some $$ for the UHF/Na Koa and quite recently a hunk of $$ for the Wahine volleyball, basketball and softball teams.
I am not a candidate for the board and like Don, I pay my own way except in the interest of full disclosure, I have gotten a couple invits to the WVB, and tickets to one WBB and MBB. The big prize came from POMAI and KEVIN who got me a season ticket for the Wahine softball games.
I’m working on another possible donation and may get an autograph from ST but other than that, like Don, I prefer to pay my own way.

#331 – Doesn’t matter. It’s already too late, regardless of whether they make or don’t make a change in head coaches. Recruiting for next year has taken a hit. The BOR just doesn’t have any members that understand what needs to be done to keep the football program competitive. They don’t care, and even if they did, they don’t know what needs to be done.
How many coaching changes have been made, and they still have not tried to get the process shortened by legislative amendment. Not a priority item, so they are still in the dark ages.
All I know is no meetings will happen until after this game, so might as well focus on this game.
I think this is a fascinating matchup.

I was there in the stands in the 80’s and 90’s and the the rivalry was intense.

BYU Hawaii says 2500 students, add support staff, etc, 3K at the school alone. I know they all won’t show up, but there is community support at the cultural center, island residents, etc, they will be there to support the Cougars. At least the stadium won’t look so empty on television.
It also says that the temple receives 100,000 visitors annually. How many are Mormons, I wonder? Should be a good turn out for BYU… Might be loud on both sides of the field.
Cyber monday is over, let the bean counters count the ticket sales to the fb game, if we have empty seats, time to start another promo. McNamara has to keep his foot to the pedal and figure out additional way to increase the ticket sales. How about $10 for military and their family, fill the yellow sections.
I sat with BG808 in the red last week and large sections of red seats were empty. My usual brown loge is about 70% filled, but across the stadium there were lots of empty brown loge seats especially in the premium seats.
How many Kahuku recruits will be guests of UH v. BYU. This is a recruiting war as well. Need the Red to turn Green. Go Warriors!

IMHO d1 #308 I commend you three for your non wavering expression for the student. I respect all points of view and by no means agree with everyone. I just want a better UH system that improves the quality of UH athletics and makes acceptable yearly growth. This has nothing to do with students or the teams performance.

In 2008, Mac was hired pretty late and was still able to land Geodon Hanohano, Haku Correa, Paipai Falemalu, Greg Alexander, Dustin Blount, Jake Heun, Jeremy Bryant, Art Laurel…among others…He may not be the Coach that JJ was, but imho he and his staff have done a better job of recruiting.
Next year will be HIS first class of seniors.
I like that fact that he wears his feelings on his forehead, and that he has shown a capacity to accept criticism from his administration.
Urban was just hired by the Bucks for 4-million a year…i guess he’s off of our wish list.
