Tough road ahead; USU QB released from hospital
The Warriors will learn in the next couple of days how many players will be available for what is now regarded as the stretch run.
Preliminary indications are that left tackle Clayton Laurel might have suffered a season-ending broken arm. If so, it would be the final unfortunate stage in a career filled with injuries. Laurel has endured shoulder and ankle injuries the entire season. Jordan Loeffler finished the game as the left tackle.
Right wideout Royce Pollard will undergo an MRI today to determine the extent of injuries to his left knee and left ankle.
Right slotback Justin Clapp said he suffered at least one fractured rib. Clapp had moved from right slotback to right wideout. Left slotback Billy Ray Stutzmann finished the game at right wideout.
Those injuries might force the Warriors into tough decisions. Freshman offensive tackle Blake Muir has been held out of games to preserve the option of redshirting. He has been considered the best available tackle behind Laurel and Loeffler. Another backup option might be Frank Loyd, who already has used a redshirt season.
Chris Gant and Cecil Doe, both of whom were on track to redshirt, warmed up after Pollard was injured. Instead, the Warriors decided to shift Clapp and then Stutzmann.
With the need to win two of the final four regular-season games for a postseason berth, the Warriors might not have the luxury of saving redshirts.

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State football player Chuckie Keeton is out of the hospital and cleared to return to Logan after suffering an injury Saturday night in USU’s 35-31 comeback win at Hawai‘i.
Keeton, a freshman quarterback from Houston, Texas, was injured late in the second quarter and carted off the field, and taken to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. USU Head Athletic Trainer Dale Mildenberger stayed with Keeton.
According to USU team physician Dr. Trek Lyons, Keeton suffered an extreme stinger to his spine, but Lyons said that Keeton was moving and walking about Sunday, and was cleared to return to Logan. Keeton and Mildenberger will be leaving Honolulu Sunday night.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chuckie,” USU head coach Gary Andersen said. “He is a tough kid, and we’re extremely glad he is going to be okay. We can’t wait to get him home and back together with our team so we can wrap our arms around him and let him know how much we love him.”

There is no subsitute for real-game experience. Most players, if given the choice of sitting or playing, will choose to play. Still 4 more games to go, which is a lot of football.
Don’t hate on the players as they are putting their blood, sweat, & tears out on the field playing through injuries that would make the average Joe go home and curl up into a fetal position.
This is the reason the NCAA allows 85 scholarships and 120-player rosters.
A few weeks ago I pegged the Warriors’ chances of going 7-6 and qualifying for the bowl at 50-50 and that was assuming a W at home against USU. Now, their bowl hopes are in real jeopardy.
The future offers no guarantees.
A player could redshirt this season, then get hurt in the ensuing years.
That’s why lots of people favor the proposal of five years and no redshirting.

The Warriors played good in the first half because Utah State U. did not prepare for the Moniz factor. I think last night has everyone concerned about the future.
Let’s not forget the immediate concern about Nevada. Did concerns about kicking result in going for it at least once on fourth-and-1? Which coach was responsible for identifying the fake punts? What should UH do at receiver?

We don’t have to agree or disagree on what is best for UH Athletics but realize UH is our University and UH Athletics is our program.
We need to take a personal look at what we believe to be the best for the UH Football program and for the University of Hawaii and make our views known outside of chance conversations or anecdotal additions to the blogs.
After working at UH in support of UH Athletics I can say without hesitation that I trust MRC Greenwood to make great decisions as they affect UH Athletics. I have only to support my fellow UH Football Alum in his decisions as I have implicit trust in AD Jim Donovan; that trust has no reservations.
Disagree or agree, let us all work towards the future of UH Athletics.

All coaches’ contracts start and end with the athletic director.
Upper Campus and the Regents might have preferences, but they have bigger concerns than the athletic program.
AD is paid to make decisions. It’s not about committees or Upper Campus or the Punahou mafia.
Whatever the future of the program, it’s in the AD’s hands. He’s the one paid to make the calls.

Can someone take the starting lineup at the beginning of the season and note which players are still playing and which are hampered with injuries. The offense certainly looks like triage central and they don’t appear to be playing as a unit. Everyone on the offense must perform their assignment with slit second accuracy, but our patchwork group looks out of synch.
To bad we couldn’t somebody fresh like Boise’s OC..I think that would be pretty cool; along with someone who can recruit really well.

I think people can differentiate between real UH football fans and those just looking to take a dump on UH football and Hawaii in general. Real fans are hurting because we all want to see UH succeed and put out a quality product on the field. Again, this is nothing against the players who are laying it out on the line each week. It’s painful to watch BCS programs or even Boise State perform week in and week out at a high level and then look at our own team and compare.
I think that in the business world as a manager you need to constantly assess yourself and those who work under you. Has the bottom line been met each year? Are we seeing more productivity each year? Is the quality of work improving? Have problems in the past been eliminated and dealt with accordingly? Are we moving in an upward or downward direction as an organization? To have a worker repeatedly say “sorry I messed up” is not going to cut it and that person will soon be out of a job.

The problem with riding out Mack’s contract and then hiring someone else after next season means that UH would be flushing away *2* recruiting classes. UH wouldn’t be able to fill its scholarships in that case and would end up with less scholarship athletes than D-IAA schools. Then *no* coach UH hires would have a shot to win for a couple of years.

First, UH isn’t in an AQ conference.
While the head coach is paid well, the coordinators aren’t home owners. That dates to JJ’s staff. Mike Cavanaugh left because it gave him a chance to buy a house.
It’s tough to recruit here, too. I don’t think UH has ever recruited a 5-star player out of high school. That goes back to Proc Klum.
Because of Hawaii’s uniqueness, a head coach would need either local ties or sensitivity.
That all said, UH shouldn’t have lost last night. There’s no defense for that.

Yes, and Harsin has done an AMAZING job at revamping Texas’ offense from what it looked like last year. Freshmen QB, Freshman RB, Freshman/Sophomore OL–the starting freshman RB gets injured so the backup RB starts and the offense got 439 rushing yards to blow out Texas Tech (52-20), the same Texas Tech team that beat then-#3 Oklahoma recently.
Harsin actually turned down the offensive coordinator job at *LSU* to take the offensive coordinator job at Texas this past offseason. Harsin went from a walk-on player at Boise State to becoming the most sought-after OC in college football. He’ll get a head football coaching job at a big school soon…Texas’ most recent coordinator hires are now the head coaches at Auburn and Florida.
ST has been talking for awhile now about how UH needs to make a decision on Mack’s contract. They weren’t able to agree on money over the summer, but deciding to just let his contract dwindle down isn’t helping UH or Mack and is killing recruiting. Deciding to make no decision is actually a decision to let the program decline.
It might be cruel, but I thought UH had a real chance to knockout the Aggies after their QB suffered his injury. The Aggie players were really emotionally drained at that point. But the Aggies were able to regroup, and, well the question Aggie fans need to ask is: Why wasn’t Adam Kennedy the starter?

Please no more talk about Cal Lee (he had his shot as DC) or Norm Chow (he’s near the end of this coaching career at Utah where his wife is from).
In 1977 Dick Tomey came to UH without any local ties and quickly adopted the local lifestyle and sensitivities. He had to in order to be successful and to recruit locally. Of course we don’t want someone like Fred von Appen (UH AD’s college teammate) to come here again (he and his staff looked like they wanted to jump on the next plane back to mainland). Made a half hearted effort to recruit a local running back by the name of Joe Igber at “IWALANI SCHOOL”.
I think that ST mentioned that Upper Campus wanted to extend Mack at $700k/year while Mack wanted $850k/year. It would have been nice for a compromise to have been worked out–maybe the 2-year extension that Mack wanted for $750k/year or $800k/year with a lower buyout clause. That way Mack has his extension for recruiting and UH would have been protected in case things went badly this season or in 2012.
One MWC coach this past offseason signed a contract exactly like this–people wondered why he got an extension after a HORRIBLE season last year, but they didn’t seem to notice that his buyout clause went way down.
I think Kennedy was brought in to do that but the frosh had fresh legs in camp and won the job
Disappointed and discouraged, but not abandoning the Warrior Wa`a. That was a motivated and angry USU team last night and UH paid a high injury price. I was encouraged to see Iosefa’s growth as a RB and Davis gaining as WR. I was encouraged by Hadden’s improvement and better blocking on PAT and FGs. I was appalled at the missed calls by the zebras on facemask, holding and out of bound hits. USU took away the running game from us late in the game and with 3rd and 4th string receivers Mo had few open receivers and options. We got beat by an improving USU team and now must reassess and prepare for the remaining games. College football can be a cruel and fickle mistress. Some are grading our team and coaches on W’s alone. I choose not to. This year has been about rebuilding, re-evaluating and rehabilitating. I salute our team’s growth and character and that includes our coaches. Go Warriors!

I’ve been a season ticket holder for over 35 years and have been to every bowl game (except for the ones held on Christmas-family comes first) and I will continue to be a Bow supporter. However, this year I’m hoping we don’t make the Hawaii Bowl only to be humiliated on national television.

What if UH wins in Reno on Saturday? UH could ride the momentum to roll over Fresno State and Tulane. UH would be 8-4 heading to the BYU game that would probably be a sellout. Would people still not want Mack to get his extension?
Extension with a reasonable buyout clause may be the best protection for UH. Mack knows that any extension he gets will have a buyout clause…his current contract is almost the only head coaching contract in D-IA football without a buyout clause.
I think when people say they want Harsin, they really mean they want the success Harsin has as a coordinator to translate to running an entire program.
Would Harsin be a good head coach? Probably. But don’t know for sure.
The job entails having administrative skills.
Norv Turner is an outstanding offensive coordinator. Is he a good head coach?
The difference between being a congressman and governor is one is a legislator and the other an administrator.

The ideal UH coach would be a mash up of say, (insert favorite college coach here), super agent Jerry Maguire, and Kamehameha the Great. Not easy to find such a person.

I guess we really have reached the big time. Less than 11 months after winning a share of the conference title and bowl appearance there are calls to let the coach go. We know this: the cost of a new coach next season, if that’s the road UH takes, is $1.1M plus whatever the new coach’s salary would be. I don’t envy Mr. Donovan in making these calls. All the while worrying whether he has to scramble to find opponents if teams leave the MWC for the Big East as expected. What fun.

Stranger things have happened and winning seems to cure all if UH should win its remaining 4 games and finish at 8-4. Looks like UCLA’s HC Rick Neuheisel may have saved his job with the win yesterday over ASU. The ASU HC Dennis Erickson was in a similar situation last year.
Hope this is worth it.

Dark, gloomy, and disappointed!
At the start of the 2nd half it appeared that UH coaches went into the “play not to lose” mode with the selection of offensive plays. But, this has happened nearly every game which makes UH, IMHO, very predictable offensively. Watch the tendencies next game.
Defensively, it seems that the injury to Keeton, blew the wind out of the sales and the swarmng and hitting seemed to stop. Did I notice wrong?
Like some say, UH does not have the “killer instinct” to put games away.
If the coaches were stressed out because injuries to key players, whose fault is that the replacements are not totally prepared? Maybe, the coaches should rethink how they conduct all practices inlcuding off-season training!
Somehow, I am disappointed, by do not feel as bad as I did after the UNLV and SJSU games – can’t put my finger on it!

Assistant coach salaries are a major factor in the quality of people you hire and in assembling a staff. Assistants don’t own homes (unless they’re from here – Lee bros, Dan Morrison, Rich Miano), as mentioned earlier. There are a lot of talented GAs looking to land their first full-time coaching position. In the past former assistants like Mike Cavannaugh and Vantz Singletary live in the UH faculty housing up in Manoa during their time here. Having a spouse that also in on the same page is important. Read about an assistant coach at Utah State (his first full-time coaching job) whose wife left him because she couldn’t adjust to living in Logan, Utah.

While I strongly believe a decision needs to be made on Mack’s contract, I don’t believe it is killing recruiting. Look at Neuheisel. For years there’s talk that he was going to be fired. But he’s still there and has done well in recruiting Hawaii kids, including the Punahou kicker this year. As another poster wrote, same with ASU and Erickson. When its all said and done, it has to do with the school, the league the school’s in, the best chance of playing (and winning) and exposure. UH will continue to get the diamond in the rough kids, the ones not on the A or B list of BCS schools.
Just my thoughts. Maybe its time to abandon the R&S so all the inexperienced receivers will be running designated routes and Moniz won’t have to be guessing where they are going since he had not practiced with each of them. Then there shouldn’t be as much comments about not being in synch. If they did switch, there should always be a receiver to dump the ball to in case of a blitz or break down in protection. The run is okay, but will always get shut down if the pass is not working.

Que bueno!! Players are asked to step up every week. It is time all of us in support of UH Athletics step it up. Go to the stadium, to the SSC, to the Ching Complex and support all sports as much as possible. Purchase your season tickets not just ducats that look like a ‘big game’. Football is the big ticket but other sports need to be supported as well.
I personally liked the attitude of UNLV’s head coach when taking the job. Paraphrasing his comments, ‘We are going to recruit; we are going to play the best personnel not considering grade level; we are going to bite the bullet for two years notwithstanding wins and losses and build a great program here’.
Any buyout clause puts UH in the same position next year if we go farther south in the program. Recruiting will be delayed as a consequence of the hiring process.
The Run and Shoot is showing its age and is dying a very slow death. I read a comment a while back that countered this view stating that Pro Teams run it. They run the set perhaps but it is not the basis of their offense. WAC teams have caught up to it and the MWC is getting ready to counter it. Adjustments made in the 2nd half of games have shown how to negate many of the R/S strengths.

Regarding the O/L. Besides Lefotu and Saplou, Weren’t the rest of the O/L starting and some back-ups dealt with injuries during their career at UH? Why are we replacing injured players with more injured players. You have hungry healthy players who are ready to play like Bubba Luna, Frank Loyd who has used up their redshirt years? If you recruited a player and gave him a full ride, I can see him redshirting his first year. Put him to work after that. He must have seen something good in him to give him a full ride.
Frankly, I was really surprised to read Ferd’s column this morning, but he is correct.
In order to replace McMackin and get someone with the kinds of skills to carry UH into the future, we will have to raise approximately $1.75 million dollars – not from state tax coffers – over the next 30 to 45 days. That means going out into the business community & getting personal – not corporate – contributions to underwrite the buyout and recruitment costs – including the down payment on a house for the new head coach.
Any word on the Utah quarterback?
It’s the group of Punahou alumni who help subsidize the basketball program.
Just a thought – since our 1/2 of our 1st team receivers are injured and the 2nd team receivers may be more comfortable with the 2nd string QBs, start Austin or Graves. We can keep Stutz and Miah where they are most comfortable and the backups have a relationship with the backup QBs.

If a large part of the benefit to playing postseason bowls comes from the extra practices the team gets that ostensibly help give the team a leg up for the next season…what’s really the point of going all-out for two more wins this year?

looks like to me that Idaho and USU defenses have figured out Rolo’s offense.
Aggressively attack with 6 or more; clog the middle running/escape lanes;
cover the passing zones to either side.
Others have pointed out few passes are thrown in the middle.
Others have pointed out the futility of throwing long.

It was interesting to read that JJ used a TE and 3 WRs yesterday for quite some time to counter what Tulane’s defense was doing. SMU’s RB ran for 143 yards.
That’s what I have been saying. Put Iosefa at H back tightend then we can have Jackson in the game at the same time. And how about moving Stuz back to the outside and giving Harding a go at slot since we are so battered at receiver.
When JJ first went to SMU he lined up an H back behind the oline in the guard tackle gap to block the rush end from the side hback was on. The rush end never saw it coming.
UH plays Tulane later this month, so the SMU-Tulane game film will be studied closely I’m sure.

Good point about how using Iosefa at H back could be even more attractive now due to the injuries that UH has at receiver.
Like the idea of a H back. Iosefa and Jackson on the field at the same time is a terrific idea and it might take some of the pressure of of our beleaguerd passing attack. The H back may open up Moniz’s run options more as well.
Stick to the shorter passes and use a hurry up offense more frequently.

UH offense is too predictable. UH defense is “bend and break” a few crucial times during a game.

UH should have let Utah State score right away when there was almost 5 minutes left or some time during that last drive. Then UH could have had more time to score, but that doesn’t guarantee that UH would have scored, but better than having only 14 seconds left.

One major problem is that UH is between the rock and the hard place in more than just Athletics, so it’s kind of hard for the people at UH to deal with more than one at a time.

The most frustrating thing for me is that we’ve seen the coaches dial it up, coach em up. We know that the team can play an inch from the edge, go all out and execute with reckless abandon. Even with all the injuries I like our chances vs the next 4 games. Our sense of urgency or intensity level is gonna have to pick – from the coaches. Fix that and we good.

Are you upset with the Foundation or members who sit on the BOT Trustees. It is okay to be upset when they get more attention from the President and Chancellor. All BIG DONORS get the BEST tickets and invites. It is BUSINESS BABY!!!! Those with the DEEP pockets and actually give BIG money, get the best tickets, invites, meet and greets. College sports is a BUSINESS. And we have to look at it that way just like all other institutions.
It is not just the basketball donations you are mad about. Who is it? When you put it out there, you have to justify since you are now offending thousands of alumni of Punahou School. It is the end of the year and time for giving of gifts and donations. Should I rip up the check to the University of Hawaii? Even though I did not attend the institution we have given monies to the University of Hawaii for years. We just sat down with the about leaving them money. Should I give it to another institution since you consider folks who went to Punahou the MAFIA?
Don Wier, KC Collins and others have been a large part of our estate plan on leaving monies to the University and setting up a large internship with UH and UH Hilo. Now I feel conflicted. Please advise?
Also you might try to understand that the D Line well there was a psychological break down last night. When the QB was taken off the field on the stretcher defensive players hold back. Happens all the time. Remember when it happened in the mid 70’s and one of my classmates tackled a St. Louis player who became paralyzed? For years we ALL suffered this young mans injury. But when you play football, you sign up for getting hurt. It is part of the GAME they are playing. Even in REAL life if you play in the GAME of LIFE you are going to get hurt!!! It was a tough break for that young man. My heart goes out to his parents and everyone. Pray hard for him to recover.

just a thought. Just say they decide to reduce Mac’s salary. How does that sit with an image point of view from the fans, the administration, faculty, players and recruits? Has the buzz fizzled? Will the recruits recognize and say wow, you used to make this much, now you only make this much doesn’t seem like this program may be on the rise. Will the command of respect from the players still be there or does it loosen up a little bit? How will affect finding new money from boosters to the program?
It’s going to be interesting to see where this goes after the season.

Coach Mac has done many good things – he has made friends with the local coaches and teams, gotten the academics stressed and getting people to attend classes and graduate and knows the local style. And I don’t think many can fault his abilities as a DC.
With all the injuries sustained during this season and in this last game, I wonder if even JJ could have pulled it out.
With Don Weirs, Ferd Lewis and a bunch of others (including Mikey!) speaking out, I wonder if this is an example of the Peter Principle at work?
In ST’s pronouncements in the previous weeks, I interpret his remarks in the nature of “fish or cut bait”; that if we need continuity for recruiting, we better take action NOW – but not let it linger on till season’s end.

Part of the problem is we don’t know where this “savings on coach’s salary” actually goes to. reinvested? paying the debt down? assistant coaches? The other problem is you basically resign the program to continue on its current path only to rally around that fact that you “saved” half a million.

The Run and Shoot, as an offense system, is moribund. It doesn’t matter who coaches it, or coached it, or ran it. Using four wide-outs on certain plays is great, as part of an offense package that also utilizes a running attack inside and outside. Also, the use of a tight end is devasting if done properly and, as part of a planned system (I remember UH’s John Conley and Elton Shintaku as I write this). I also grew up watching Gary Garrison at SDSU and on the Chargers.
I had a long conversation with a fellow fan (from Punahou who took exception to the term Punahou Mafia I might add) and pointed out the number of times in the 2nd half of games that UH was stymied. This is due, mostly this year, to opposing coaches, on both offense and defensive, looking at opposition tendencies and making the correct adjustments. To do that takes a learning curve up in the box. It is not done making impassioned half time speeches.
Recruiting
Who would you recruit if abilities were the same?
1. The player who tells you he wants to make the travelling squad next year,
2. The player who tells you he wants to start at a position next year.
Bowl Games
Recruiting and bowl games have many similarities.
1. Do you want to just make it to a bowl game (Sheraton Hawaii Bowl was created by ESPN for UH)? You know, I know it, and most of the football community across the nation knows it.
2. Do you want to make it to the highest ranked bowl game for future recruiting, team recognition, national exposure, and fan appreciation/support.

If you were on my FB with the BEST football players ever, the Polynesian Platoon (Mosi Tatupu, Keith Uperesa, Jack Wright, Land and Mike Ciacci, Neal Ane) as they were called back in the day….I have heard it all! But let me say this…when Punahou goes on the road to the mainland, we can still KICK butt! We played VISTA this year in SD. And it was a great game. So much so, my husband loves that team as well now!!!!
And the Punahou kicker right now #15, he could out kick anyone on the UH team. That kid is incredible. Getting offers from all over. Heck even my husband is calling his Ivy University Head Coach to get that KID! He is awesome!!!! Did you see his 67 year field goal???? Yah now that is impressive.

I agree with Al #115, it’s time.
I think all football fans want the team to be in the Top 25. Right now, we can’t even break Top 100. We are NOT competitive against Top 80 teams, combined 8-16 the past 4 years. Only having a winning record against teams ranked lower than 80 (16-6) or 1AA (4-0) teams is not acceptable for me. BTW, we have lost 3 games this season to teams ranked over 100.
POLYMOM: It used to be the RHS mafia when WF was calling a lot of the shots for UH athletics from his law office downtown.
Lot of the Punahou thing probably came from old history when the Missionary families began the school 100 plus years ago. Strangely enough, they “first families” started at what became Kamehameha.
And of course that school got its reputation as the haole school where all the rich kids went.
Of course nowdays people don’t seem to realize that many of the private schools like Iolani, MPI etc charge fairly close to what Punahou charges for tution and I think one of the Neighbor Island schools charges even more than Punahou.
Actually if one of the Admission types at Punahou had his way, the student body would be mostly Asian women!
No – I’m not a graduate of that school! But if Gib’s friends want to help pay part of his salary, I’m all for it. As an aside, I wonder who were the friends of JJ that paid part of his salary?
I was fortunate enough to have two clients who gave moneys to the UHF – and they got a jersey or two and I even got tickets for the Wahine softball games!

My vote of NO CONFIDENCE in this staff stands. Bowl game or not because if we make it to Christmas Eve, I do not see anything changing from 2008 and 2010’s follies.
I wonder if Mack would be up to negotiate a buyout that would allow us to pay him over say 10 years or so.

Not to mention, they lost to St. Louis for the ILH championship that year.Remember Tatupahou vs. St. Kini? But don’t get me wrong, this UH Alum and Kamehameha grad has great love some of the Buff and Blue guys from that era.
It broke my heart when Jimmy Kealoha passed away recently. He was one the nicest braddahs and finest men you could ever hope to meet. Not to mention Roe Johnson, a soft spoken undersized guard and lb who played with the heart of a lion. A truly great guy and and absolute gentleman. And Mosi too. Nothing but love for these “O” men and they are no more part a Mafia than are any number of graduates from ILH schools who have a deep affinity for classmates as well as fellow ILH competitors from the day.
Things aren’t as monolithic they might seem when it comes to old rivalries. Its great to look back at those old rivalries and to remember them as some of the best days of our lives, shard with team mates and rivals who are counted among the best of friends to this day.

I’ve said it before, when you become predicitable, you become akin to losing. The WAC schools have played UH for years now, even as Rolo as an oc or Mac as a coach. I guess it took them this long to figure it out. I think Tulsa figured it out before the Hawaii bowl and had time to prepare for it. The last 2 games, both teams had 2 weeks to prepare and also, as coaches against Hawaii, I’m sure they studied the Tulsa game film or even talked to somebody involved with Tulsa. This reminds me of when former Hawaii Coach Johnson “lost” his playbook, they started to lose. Easy to see what UH is doing. Maybe that’s why JJ changed his coaching strategy and now would run the ball more and even use a tight end. BYU used to throw the ball most of the game, but would always start the game running the ball, then the rest of the game, would pass on almost every play. Just my opinion.
Oh, I’m not upset at all with the Punahou group. I think it’s great that they contribute to the basketball program. They pay for 1.5 coaching positions. That helps the program use the extra money for recruiting. Mafia was a poor choice of words. But for all of the group’s decisions, it’s still the AD who initiates proposals, not outside groups.

If we want to play with the BIG BOYS we need to MAN UP and act like the BIG BOYS!

To which $400,000 are you referring to? You mean the boosters share of $400,000 that went to his salary every year or something else?
My point is that over a 10 year period we could do a 60-40 split or something where boosters could provide $40K and $60K by UHAD. It’s better than paying up $1.XXM or whatever that we can’t afford today, tomorrow, or even next week.

The trouble with booster splits is that if the donations fall short, Na Koa has to cover. Don’t want to get into a situation for Na Koa to subsidize salaries. Na Koa has a finite amount of resources and its contributions could go to more pressing needs.

it is obvious to some that when we lose a player or two we don’t have a replacement/backup who is ready to go in and compete. i don’t fault the individual players for this.
this staff is on its fourth year, which means to me that they should have had enough time to develop the proper numbers of first, second, and third string players for each position through proper recruiting and coaching.
but, we aren’t at that level or even near that.

Good point. I guess as much as it is important to find a manageable way to pay for a buyout, it’s important that if we get boosters they need to be financially stable and have the integrity to follow through with the commitment 9 years down the road.
I am too, bothered by the Hawaii Bowl. I would rather we not play in it if we don’t have enough preparation time to win it. The last few left many supporters sad and on national tv too.

Polymom, don’t get me wrong; I loved it! Ha ha all of this stimulates the curiosity in each of us. Wouldn’t type anything if I wasn’t interested in another’s response. For example, one such opinion that Nevada will defeat UH this upcoming Saturday, that Fresno and BYU games will be tough matches, and UH just might come out of the season under .500.
I can understand the need to go for those long bombs to “keep the defense honest,” but we need to take a slightly different approach, I think. I’d like to see us consistently move the chains and get first down after first down, mixing in runs with quick, short passes. Lull the defense to sleep with a few first downs first, then surprise them with a naked bootleg or other play action medium passes. Gotta stick with the high-percentage stuff.
It was working for us in the first half, and then we went conservative to try to burn some clock and shorten the game. Stick with what was working.
Kanoa Leahy (Iolani grad) often teases his father Jim (St. Louis) about the so called “St. Louis Mafia.” Guys who drive Cadillacs and use lots of hair spray (his words). It’s all in fun.

Haven’t posted here all season but having seen Ferd Lewis’ editorial about a need for a coaching change, I felt compelled to state my opinion.
Personally for myself, I made my concerns known the first two seasons. Last season, it really looked like McMackin was getting the hang of being an effective head coach at this level, where I was beginning to warm up to the idea that UH football would be in good hands and building upon the legacy which past regimes had put into place. Unfortunately, one of his comments he made leading up to the 2010 Hawaii Bowl made me realize that there was still a ways to go. What I’m referring to is when he said “we’re going to kick their (Tulsa’s) ass.” When the end result proved to be otherwise, it just ends up making you look really silly.
McMackin wears his emotions on his sleeves which makes him a very likeable guy in person when it comes to the general public where he is just being himself. Anyone who has met him knows how approachable he is (you rarely got that feeling with Jones by contrast.) Unfortunately though, that emotional side of his personna sometimes gets the better of him where he’ll get too fired up and say some things in public which can be taken out of context or completely the wrong way. As the head coach, he represents the school. And in UH’s case, represents the entire state since it is the only D-1A football program here.
In one recent post game press conference (I believe the NMSU game), coach Mack felt he needed to address some of the criticisms coming from various blogs and message boards. This came about even though UH had won the game. At least to me, that came off sounding really bad since he should’ve been happy about winning and not letting what the arm chair quarterbacks were saying. He of all people knows that this just comes with the territory of being a coach (especially when he was part of the staff of some high profile teams like Miami and Texas Tech where their fanbases are far more brutal than the ones here) and that you really cannot let it get to you. Sports fans tend to be a passionate bunch and often times do the knee jerk emotional reaction thing. McMackin is obviously passionate about football, his coaches, and his players; he says it all the time about how proud he is of them and gets fired up and often times blurts out things that he probably wishes he didn’t.
But being the leader at the top often times requires cunning calculation (in terms of what one says) as well as difficult decisions which not everyone will agree with. You also have to be willing to calmly face and answer your critics when the going gets tough. Some folks are great coordinators but not necessarily great at being the head coach. There are different skill sets involved. Everytime I hear Norm Chow’s name brought up for example, I believe his time has past as far as being the head guy; where it is really about the bigger picture (PR wise) and overall game time manager on the sidelines. IMHO, McMackin is a great defensive coordinator, but not necessarily a great head coach.
And this is why the AD has a tough decision to make. McMackin is a likeable person and it is easy to see why parents are willing to trust their sons with him. Unfortunately, UH is not a tradition and story rich program where having an overbearing coach is a worthwhile tradeoff to put up with as is the case with those other types of powerful programs. McMackin had a perfect mix (likeable public personna but on the football field, is a bear.) Unfortunately, we are all not seeing the results we expected this season especially when taking into considering, the pay level (ROI). Attendance at the stadium is dropping because people do not like the product that is being delivered. PPV could also suffer if the interest is no longer there. Then there is recruiting as Garret mentioned. Using the investing analogy, sometimes, you need to know when to cut your losses. Such is the case with the 1 year remaining on McMackin’s contract where that amount needs to be looked at in terms of the affect it has as a result of a loss of confidence by the general public where they don’t buy tickets. There are some 20,000 hard core followers who show up no matter what. But the reality is that you need the bandwagon fans who jump on board so long as you are winning… and that amounts to at least 15K more people in the stands. If the future is not McMackin, I personally believe the UHAD needs to make that decision now. Tomey can be named the interim HC till the end of the season until a permanent replacement can be found.
I also agree that UH isn’t going to land a high profile coach. I doubt the majority of them would fit in well here anyway with the way the culture is (remember Gib Arnolds dad?) Mike Leach’s name is being dropped but I believe he is still a hot potato at this point and furthermore, likely out of what UH can reasonably afford. IMHO, UH needs to look at building the future and land a reasonably young go-getter hire who wants to build his own program and legacy sort of like Dick Tomey did when he came here as an unknown assistant from UCLA. I have no idea if someone like ex-UH assistant Jeff Reinebold (Sun God) would be a worthwhile consideration but I personally liked his passion and enthusiasm during his time here. If he is not D-1A head coach material though, the point I’m trying to make is that this is the sort of person we should strive for. Doesn’t have to be from Hawaii or have Hawaii ties. They just have to have an ability to be open minded where the culture thing will take care of itself just like it did with Colt Brennan.

I don’t know a lot about football so someone please help me out with this.
As soon as Pollard went out and we had no threats at wideout (Sampson out, Bright out, Stutzman switching over from what was probably very little work at wideout during the week) USU used almost exclusively used 3 down linemen for the rest of the game with 5 or 6 DBs. ALL the DBs were lined up very close to line of scrimmage, which took away all of the intermediate routes (I couldn’t understand why John V. kept saying they need to take the intermediate routes…THEY WEREN’T OPEN!!!). Basically they had the option to dump off underneath – which only led to two or three yard gains since the DBs were playing so close to the line and the slots have shown they don’t have the ability to make the first man miss – or to beat their (very often) man coverage long on the outside – for which they had no remaining deep threats at wideout. The running game wasn’t really working, I’m assuming because there were so many backup lineman in. What would you do in this situation?
Here’s my question. Would traditional RB screens work in this situation? I think they would because USU was so often in man coverage outside (DBs not looking in the backfield). That doesn’t leave many players defending the screen (often 3 down linemen and only 2 or 3 linebackers). But UH doesn’t employ traditional RB screens in their offense. Does anyone know why?
In my opinion it was USU’s defensive set that stagnated UH’s offense. UH couldn’t beat them deep to force them out of this defensive set. However, I feel that RB screens would also have been able to break them out of this defensive set. Someone with actual football knowledge please help me out with this one.

What happened to the short passing game of 3 to 8 yards to both control the clock, allow for quick release and this opens up the field? USU adjusted in the 2nd half to the draw & the double option by dropping off one of the inside line backers (45 or 9) to the side Iosefa was on, but did not see Rolo changing up calls to counter. Basically make the right adjustments to what Nevada does on the fly is one thing.
Still miffed about the 2nd fake punt. If I can see it, and yell the player’s number #11 & fake from the stands; how come a coach or coaches that game plans all week, have been in this business for years, this was the 2nd attempt of the game with the same guy #11, have this responsibility of special teams oversight and get paid a high 5 or 6 figure salary could not figure this out? As I noted last night I think this was the key momentum shift of the game.
I personally want to calm down a bit before deciding on Coach Mac’s future at UH. I did not like the way we showed Wags the door after he took us to a WAC championship and a Holiday Bowl victory in the days when fans would only hope for a winning season. Our expectations are higher now, but we have to evaluate Coach Mac’s entire contributions to the program, not just on a season of unfortunate circumstances and disappointments.
I’m not saying I’m a strong supporter of Mac. I’m just saying we should take the emotions of the season out of the equation.
So, Pollard has an MRI today? Any word on that status of his injury?
What it all comes down to is that this is a game of predictability. Last night, UH has become more predictable with their selection of passing plays and particular running routes and the receivers who are getting the ball. Last year, with high profile players such as Salas and Pilares, as a defense my predictability would decrease because coverage would be spread across those players; in addition to having Alex Green as our RB would make matters worse for the defense in a hypothetical scenario. Comparing this scheme to this year’s formation of starters, my defense would have a greater predictability not only due to UH’s lacking a stacked offense, but of their recent selection of running routes (Stutz and Ostrowski’s dish laterally left or right for an easy gain of 5 yards) and lacking ability to get deep balls.
This is where Nevada has an advantage over UH I’m sure having reviewed UH’s recent game films and % of chosen plays ran. However, with injuries that stall production especially in our receiver set, we have to evaluate upcoming stringers and place them in the appropriate depth.
Main points against Nevada: our Defense has to step up greater than our offense; Moniz has to be a leader even if that means taking it on his own and running; second string receivers need to minimize dropped balls.
Well, the good news is that when I got home my basketball tickets were sitting in my mailbox.
When Moniz is under center, guess what is going to happen, run or pass? Where are our play action passes to freeze the linebackers? We don’t seem to have very many plays faking the rb. Are we becoming too arrogant and stubborn with this “system” offense and not having to go to other systems (2 rbs, tight end, etc.) once in a while?
Niumatalolo would be interesting, but I don’t know that the money’s right. Thought I read somewhere that he is now one of the highest paid federal employees??

1. Na Koa subsidizes (actually pays the entire cost including benefits) the position of Recruitment Coordinator (est. $100k). This was to be a one time cost then to be absorbed by the UHAD but once paid, twice paid, always paid now.
2. Na Koa subsidized the previous special teams coordinator’s moving expenses who didn’t last long and kept on moving-to Seattle (est $20k)
3. Na Koa subsidizes the offensive line coach’s salary position to the tune of $30k per year
4. Na Koa pays the entire salary of the tutor for the football team (if I remember correctly it was close to $30K including benefits).
5. Na Koa pays for the Student Worker (FB Office) $10k
Think Niumatalolo recently got a contract extension. According to one report, his salary is 1.1 million.

If I have one criticism of Shaw, it’s that he tried to turn Sila into a C and didn’t recognize Sapolu’s natural talent at C. Sila was too tentative, even lost at C. Not his fault at all. Making the line calls and snapping the ball accurately took away his best attributes, which are raw power and aggressiveness. He’s been doing much better at RG. Sapolu has stabilized the interior of the line and I’m shocked that he wasn’t in the mix beforehand.
Navy HC is not technically a federal employee. His salary comes from Naval Academy Athletic Association. .

On a positive note:
The classes (freshmen to seniors) are more balanced than they have been in years. This means this team will be better over the next two to three years. We are finally running all the camps and junior days JJ resisted. Recruiting is finally being done the right way. You have to credit Coach Mack for that.
I am personally offended when anyone attacks Punahou, or makes gross all-encompassing negative stereotypes of a wonderful educational institution; and with it all its alumni, supporters and fans. I hear it everywhere we travel; even internationally! Aaaargh!

As a public schooler I took “Punahou Mafia” to mean some graduates who wanted to help the program when a fellow alum was up for the job. I thought it was a good thing. My uncle who graduated from a rival private institution close to the Ala Wai saw it as a conspiracy. I wonder if this is how we form our opinion on this matter.
So far, the WAC is the only conference that doesn’t have any teams that are bowl eligible.

Good news on the USU QB. Fare well
I haven’t heard a single suggestion that will not hurt the program recruiting wise or money wise.. That being said I’m going to put my head in the sand and hope we win three out of the four remaining games.
So, I agree with many on this blog that Offensive Line play at UH is God awful, terrible.
Allow me to add that play at receiver / slot has been poor as well. The offense has gotten to be a group of “catch and sitters”.
However, I must DIS-AGREE with those who pledge that Bryant Moniz is not a capable if not GREAT quarterback. Are we not watching the same games?
Moniz vs. Utah State, two touchdown passes and two touchdowns running the ball. Not enough?
Moniz reached the 10,000 yard passing plateau against the Aggies. He runs for his life on every snap, he gets hit a LOT. In fact, I watched the game on PPV and Mr. Tsai said Moniz got slapped around 36 times over the past few outings, that was coming into Hawaii’s game vs. USU.
And what, Moniz jumps right back up every single time.

Been saying it for weeks but Jackson needs more touches. Many are enamored with Iosefa (as am I), but Jackson adds another dimension to the offense and brings as much to the table, if not more, than the frosh phenom.

Bleed…I concur. I just cannot understand the complaints lodged against Moniz. He is haandling the situation as best as possible given your assessment (which I’v also voiced). The receivers really don’t know what they are doing and are just not that good. Hate to say it but this group is a huge step down from our past receivers. Old Stutz, Owens, Lelie, Bess, Rivers, Grice-Mullen, Salas, Parades were just special. I remember when Bess or Grice Mullen got dinged and Salas went in. I said to my wife, wow, we’ve got someone special in the wings as she was worried that we’d really miss Bess and Grice-Mullen.
We did not have that.
We are truly rebuilding and not reloading. Tells you about recruiting.

I have been gone from Na Koa for two years now. I kept my reasons for leaving to myself.
My only comment upon leaving or said when I ‘retired/resigned’ from the Na Koa position, follow the money. Someone, somewhere, some day is going to take a good, long look at the expenses; several that I refused to sign off, others that were questionable, and continual ones were just downright gifts of ‘public’ funds and unethical. Multiple persons were submitting invoices and authorizing payments. I wonder if that has stopped?
Do you all find it strange to see the former players of other D-1 schools on the sidelines and getting together prior to games? And making finanacial contributions to their alma mater??Mike Biscotti and Mike Perkins of Na Koa are making progress but no one has looked into the ‘why’ former alums are not supporting UH. Anecdotes told to me is that there has never been a continual-continual-continual reach out to former players in a meaningful way. This is part of marketing as well and ‘should’ involve the Asst. AD of marketing. Doesn’t happen.
Now you know why, Tom Mui, that I do not contribute to Na Koa on a yearly basis but do so through an endowment and a planned gift.
I will however always support the players and keep their best interests to heart.

Obviously a bitter loss. Unfortunately, if you look at UH losses, it comes from teams with losing records except for Washington and UH hasn’t played a winning team since Washington. Had a bad feeling after the 48 yd TD run. You could feel the moment shift to USU. Then came the defensive stops. Then the quick TDs. You had the feeling that the UH coaches didn’t know how to handle the situation. If UH had converted on any of the 4th down conversions, they might have won the game. UH could have used trick plays or counters because the USU D was swarming.
Does any notice that Hadden’s ball after its kick has an akward kind of wobbly spin, not the straight up and down spin of most kickers?

Don Weir has done so much for Hawaii Football. Heck he was the person to get my husband to cut the check. Why? Don is passionate about Hawaii football. We all are. Look at the incredible job Don is doing for the Letterman’s Club. Heck I already committed to buying the late great UH/Tampa Bay Buc RON HALL name for the project he is working on.

I now believe we need to immediately terminate Mack and name an interim coach. Tomey would be the best choice for interim if he agrees. Tomey and Donovan can then figure out how to handle recruiting and Donovan can start contacting possible candidates before other schools get them.
With recruits the uncertainty is deadly. If someone like Tomey can tell recruits that we will get a new coach and that the coach will run and offense and defense that will fit them– that is better than uncertainty and waiting until the season is over.
Donovan will have the task of then working out how Mack’s legal termination and buyout will work, but that is his job and he can start on it sooner. He will need to get UH approval, but he needs to take action now rather than jawbone with the administration so we get this done on a timely basis and so everyone knows what we need to do.

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State football player Chuckie Keeton is out of the hospital and cleared to return to Logan after suffering an injury Saturday night in USU’s 35-31 comeback win at Hawai‘i.
Keeton, a freshman quarterback from Houston, Texas, was injured late in the second quarter and carted off the field, and taken to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. USU Head Athletic Trainer Dale Mildenberger stayed with Keeton.
According to USU team physician Dr. Trek Lyons, Keeton suffered an extreme stinger to his spine, but Lyons said that Keeton was moving and walking about Sunday, and was cleared to return to Logan. Keeton and Mildenberger will be leaving Honolulu Sunday night.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chuckie,” USU head coach Gary Andersen said. “He is a tough kid, and we’re extremely glad he is going to be okay. We can’t wait to get him home and back together with our team so we can wrap our arms around him and let him know how much we love him.”

I had 75 grand ready to be delivered to the football program by some very gracious Punohou alumni (they didn’t wear fedoras or hang out in Italian restaurants, kidding……) who were sick of seeing money disappear to Na Koa for years and not go to football. That was a drop in the bucket, there were hundreds of thousands more. Yeah the same year we had no soap in our showers and were coaching in offices with puke stains on the carpets, and still went 12-0. June was all about it, in fact the defensive goal board probably used in the UH locker room today was put together by me and was donated in 10 seconds by the same folks wanting to help the program at a cost of 3 grand (they didn’t blink, got me cash in 24 hours to have it custom made in less than one practice week) so Mack had a defensive board for us to follow our goals progress during the season. It took me only two weeks to find these people and get them excited about donating money to the Warrior football program and I was a lowly nobody defensive GA, they came in droves cash in hand ready to donate. Our fans are the best! But…. they wanted nothing to do with the “good old boys network” with Na Koa! We had 3 lawyers on our team ready to draft paperwork and form a new football only booster club and we had big money ready to go, new computers for coaches, plane tickets for recruiting, new office furniture, you name it. But then Na Koa took over feeling completely threatened, and sensing a loss of powerplay ability and within a couple weeks we realized that they had a stranglehold on the system and in reality would not guarantee in simple plain english that the money was going to football. In fact Na Koa more or less said they take the money in or no one gets it in simple terms. All the donation money was lost, the potential young and energetic boosters (who would not deal with Na Koa feeling their money would “disappear” and not make it to football) walked away and a great opportunity was lost. No story talking here, just fact and another reason we keep walking the line between D-1 and Bush league. Too many people with personal interests, little “kingdoms” they wear crowns in and guess who lost? The players and coaches. Taught me alot about UH and how far away they really are from being a complete football program. In fact as I raised money behind the scenes for a new editing system we used on defense that year and other things I had to do it in “secret” so no one was offended or thought we were stepping on their toes. It was ridiculous. Mr. Weir says it best above. FOLLOW THE MONEY

however, his name is being bandied around for the arizona job. i am sure sooner or later he will land a high profile job with high tier salary at that.

While we’re on the topic of Punahou athletics, is it legal for the school to not only offer a full ride tuition, but rent for a volleyball player & family to live close to the school? Is that where all the carnival profits go? Am I misinformed on this? Does anyone have the answer?

#276 if your reference to the v-ball player whose name is also the first part of a popular New Zealand beer, I know for a fact that that young man’s parent was for years the facility manager of the institution, even before that young man got so tall and so talented in playing the game. I believe that the facility manager has a house on campus and employees have some break in tuition.
I do think we should keep mack. after a tough emotional lost like last night. I do think offense needs to be re-tooled. after injury after injury boy we in for a long long season.

I know for a fact st louis high recruits. My friend was fda best rb in our pop warner league. da head coach at da time (which is a asst coach at a university) came to our practice and asked my friend if he wants to go to st louis. He told them he could not afford it. Da coach said don’t worry bout tuition. He decided not to go. I do wish he did because he ended up not playing football at all.
Maybe spread might be a gud idea with moniz scrambling abilities. But our wr are banged up. So is o line. would take off redshirts off of players if they are da best at their pisition.
I feel like the only person who saw that the second fake punt was actually well covered. The run was covered, the receivers were bracketed, and USU got a lucky break on the tipped ball. I haven’t watched the recording yet to confirm this thought, but watching it in real time I don’t think it was a breakdown in coverage, just a lucky tip.

Some times its a game of breaks and it wasn’t our night. e.g. We strip a ball, Keeton goes down. #2 QB is better suited to exploit our weaknesses. We lose OL, #1 WR, #1 SB. USU rallies around their Wounded Warrior and comes back to beat us. WTF!
I notice that our defense do good aganist athletic qb and struggle aganist drop back qb. Da backup qb was more drop back passer then keeton was.

Not what I am saying at all. Na Koa needs operating funds to provide the basics FOR THE PLAYERS: training table, tutoring, weight room upgrades, tech upgrades, recruiting budgets, and the like.
I was on the inside, saw what I saw, and became cognizant that my $$ would be better spent on the UH FB future via alternative methods of funding. Like all of us, the fans and supporters, it the discretionary dollar that we choose to use wisely.

Whoa, lots of Punahou talk today. My one Punahou comment would be that sometimes those strawberry shortcake lovin’ partly buff and somewhat blue Pun alums lack a sense of humor. I don’t, however, and personally take no offense at Stephen’s word choice.
As for football, a subject I know very little about, it seems to me that the RNS relies on a special kind of player to run it effectively. Moniz is a great athlete but he seems to have two big weaknesses. The first is that he takes some time to settle in and has a tendency to throw high to start off games. The second is that he lacks touch on the long ball.
That route just isn’t much of a threat with Mo throwing it and I think the opposing teams have figured that out. Colt, Timmy, Rolo and Tyler all had great touch on long routes and if the D did not respect that route they would get punished. I am not saying that Mo never connects on long balls, because he has.
I am going to stay out of the discussion of whether Mack should stay or go because I have no idea of what will be best for the team. However, i think that Mack was out coached against both SJSU & USU. Both games should have been won.

If a kid, say 6’2″ or taller, can throw a football accurately 80 yards down the field, run the 40 in 4.3, can quick-kick 50 yards or better, some private school will probably waive tuition, get him books, tutoring, make sure his folks are taken care of, but for women’s volleyball? I don’t think so.
Salas departed the game (and out for the season) on the cart with an air cast on his left leg reported to be a broken bone in his fibula. Looks like the tackler landed on his lower leg and sort of rolled it. What a shame…..Green and now Salas.

If it comes to bringing in a new head coach I want to go on record as stating we need a national search conducted by a disinterested 3rd party.
We need a review committee made up of upper and lower Admin, faculty, students, fans, alumni, and lastly, some community members who support UH.
We need transparency in the process: what are the basic criteria for hiring the HC, what questions will applicants respond to in their preliminary application and in their interview.
With respect to privacy of applicants, once they have made it to the final 4 the community is informed of the slate. If the applicant doesn’t want his current school to find out then don’t apply.
I really want to hear/read a candidate’s vision for the future of UH Football.

It is against ILH rules to recruit. It is also a violation to give athletes scholarships. Getting back to reality every private school recruits and the bigger ones do help with tuition. The real problem is when a private school has a duel curriculum which allows the school to recruit anyone they want. This is why on the mainland in many areas you don’t have private and public schools playing each other.

Old Diver Re: #330. Have to agree with you on that. There have been some questionable candidates on previous UH searches: Evan Dobelle, Herman Frazier, Jim Bolla, Fred von Appen, among others.
Dick Tomey was not the first choice of the UH admin back in 1977. The others in the running were Jim Mora (UW), and some assistant from Ohio State or USC (I think).
Not sure that given Don Weir’s hiring criteria if The Former Coach would have ever been The HC….

The question of a prospective candidate’s vision for UH Football should be heavily examined as who here can really disagree that the prospective candidate’s TOP priority is himself and what is the next step for him to move onto another program.
Let’s face REALITY here, this is the nature of college football and basketball. Dedication to a program from a HC comes AFTER the fact when he receives God-like status and support from administration and even that is RARE.
By the way those of you who wonder why Papa Leahey is a legend should check it out to hear for yourself. Granted he has “lost a step” these days, but check it out when he was as good as anybody anywhere.
Tale of 2 teams. UH loses 2 receivers & a RB to the NFL. Record of 3-2 in the WAC. Nevada loses its QB & DE to the NFL along with their top RB. Record of 5-3 & 3-0 in the WAC. Lost to Boise St. #4 & Oregon #8. Yup, it’s coaching and Ault makes a fraction of what our HC makes.

After sitting through last night’s game, I initally called for McMackin’s job due to the disappointment of the lose. However, after a night of sleeping on it, I’ve chilled out. Sometimes, teams underachieve or have inflated expectations. That’s obviously the case this year simply because we had Moniz coming back.
I think June Jones’ successful years obviously spoiled Warrior fans to where we think that 10 wins seasons or BCS appearances should be an every year occurrence. Hawaii is not Alabama or Nebraska, where 10 win seasons are a requirement to be a successful program. The Warriors’ record has been average (slightly below and slightly above average at time) since McMackin has been coach. Not a great team and not a bad one. You know what 1.1 million a year consistently buys you in college football? An average team with the possibility of making a few bowls here and there. If UH wants a 10-win season every year with the possibility of a BCS bowl, they need to pay 2 million a year for a superstar coach like June Jones. UH wasn’t willing to do that back then, nor are they likley to do that now.
If you think a 6-7 record is the end of the world, consider how many teams in college football regularly finish 2-10, 3-9, etc. Many D-1 athletic departments, including many from BCS conferences, would be quite happy with a 6-7 record.
If you complain that the Warriors have lost both bowl games since McMackin’s been here, consider how happy some of the other WAC and MWC teams would be just to reach 1 bowl game in the last 5 years! NM St hasn’t been to a bowl game since the 1960s!
Not trying to be negative, but UH will never be a football powerhouse. UH is an average, mid-major program and McMackin is a decent coach. If we fans think that a new coach with a $500,00 a year contract will improve things, then we are kidding ourselves. Schools that pay that much are hoping to build a program so it can be average, which UH already is. It’s taken years for programs like Utah St and NM St to even be in a position to win 4 or 5 games in a year. Bring in a completely new regime now and chances are you have to expect at least 3 years of rebuilding before you see any results.
Being a sports fan can be heartbreaking at times. There were probably a few people in Alabama who were put on suicide watch last night. It seems to me Dave Reardon and Ferd Lewis are playing on UH fans emotions after a dissappointing loss to generate controversy and more readers. They are journalist and that is their job. Hopefully, UH bounces back and finishes with an 8 win season. That would be a successful season and that’s all an average, mid-major program should regularly expect.
Regarding “Punahou Mafia” … a friend of mine told me it was being discussed here today. Coincidentally, I just finished a column about the Punahou Mafia and its relationship with UH sports for tomorrow’s paper. I hope it is received by all in the spirit it is intended.

I don’t think it is too far fetched to think that they would offer financial aid for a girls volleyball player. The Buff and Blue did so for a swimmer a few years ago and swimming is not a high profile sport. Girls VB in hawaii is big. I think that girl broke all kinds of state records, swam in the Olympics for the Philippines and went to USC. I have also heard about the “duel curriculum” made to accommodate.
Re: Coach Mac. There is still time to salvage the season. Injuries have taken a toll. I still believe.

UH advertises, people apply, committee screens applicants, finalists selected, committee recommends candidate, AD approves, then forwards approval to chancellor, then to president, then to regents.
When the UH job opened in 2008, no “big-name” coach applied. Neither did anyone from Boise State.

The national search that produced H Frazier was short changed by an East Coast admin presence in awe of Olympic gold.
Too bad football is not an olympic sport.
It’s interesting that Upper Campus sometimes uses head-hunters.

Dobelle had some interesting ideas. But his money link was the Democratic Party, and the Dems weren’t in power when he took over at UH.
Side thought on the Olympics: Shouldn’t basketball be a Winter Olympic sport? Seems there aren’t enough team sports in the Winter Olympics.

JJ let it be known that he would be interested in UH job.
So UH sent a committee of Hugh Yoshida, Jim Donovan, John Fink and Dr. Miyawake to meet with JJ in San Diego.
Deal almost broke down a couple of times before JJ agreed to come over.
That was in 1998.
Ten years later, McMackin and George Lumpkin were the finalists for the UH job.
Harsin, Niumatalolo, Norwood, Chow, etc., all had chances to apply. None did. And this was off a Sugar Bowl team.
The losses this season hurt so much to ALL FANS!! IT’s unexcusable to always come out an play flat espically through most of Mac’s era! But honestly we are above .500 an he’s being compared to Von Appen. 2 things about Mac that upsets everyone is simple 1. They come out in at least every game flat at some point 2. They never win their final game the MOST IMPORTANT game for them thats what everyone gets on Mac’s case. But calm down June Jones has had many season were we been disappointed at some point how many people in 2004 were upset that season blow outs to Boise, Fresno on national tv needing to win our final 4 games to go to a bowl game losing to a DIVISION 2 team opening week. Then next season having a less than stellar year going 5-7. I’m just saying our sugar bowl run was great it gave EVERYONE in Hawai’i a taste but many people are getting humbled back to reality Hawai’i is NOT A POWER HOUSE NATIONALY but it is ONE of the best NON AQ teams an need to play like that year in an year out an the most aggravating thing with Mack as coach is that games are always a ROLLERCOASTER RIDE 1 game were dominating then we play flat another that NEEDS TO BE FIXED we have talent but its ridiculous I was SO DISAPPOINTED an i BLEED GREEN but people need to remember even our great former coach June Jones had bad games, bad seasons, disappointing performances an even in our big year we came out an didnt even Compete on National TV in our Schools biggest game an during his run we only had 2 Conference championships. With Mac we already have 1 I still believe in everyone on our team. But if our starting QB can say “they didnt try our hardest in practice or whatever” then something is wrong injuries are no excuses its football!
In the letter that JJ made public, he named possible candidates that seemed to have “interest” in the job.
Kevin Gilbride, Duane Akina, Cal Lee were a few that I remember.
I see some names of potential candidates to replace Mack and I have to laugh really hard.
Not because they are junk coaches, just that some I think actually believe we have a chance in hell to get them.
Those names that I have seen; Rich Rodriguez, Jim Tressel, Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll.
Houston, we have a problem.
Upper Campus needs to balloon about extending Mack and ride out his contract. Leaving the WACK puts UH on a college akin of antagonism and Mack isn’t the drillmaster to move the affairs forward.

I suggest that all who call themselves fans do the same and every time the urge to criticize the Warriors (team and coaches) for whatever personal reason wells up in the gullet or in the fingertips, think about the kids who have sacrificed their bodies and minds for this program and all of their families who have done the same- and replace that urge with love and appreciation for their efforts… and then say nothing if you can’t think of anything positive to say.
Lets do it if we really do love the Warriors.

Don’t know about an Hback, necessarily, but this is the game we should definitely emphasize the running game, particularly in the pathetic Reno weather.
I actually think the D will win this game for us. Nevada and its toy general will want revenge for last year’s loss, which basically wrecked their season, but I don’t think the D will let that happen.
Mojo – I was excited that the Warriors shut down the Aggies in the first half when they were typically strongest. The offense was in sync and creatively successful… and the dee shut down the “best RB in the WAC”.
We’ve had some tough losses this year, but the season isn’t over, yet…the rats seem to be jumping off the ship. Fair weather fans will never be around when the time is needed to rally. I still believe in Mack and his coaching staff…As frustrating as it may be, they need our support and not this bullcrap about firing the coach.
I’ve been a season ticket holder since my college years or 33 years…I was there last night and I was here through the Von Appen games as well. This ain’t bad, but I think we have lousy fans here. How about firing our fans???

It’s especially because the players are “sacrificing their bodies” that they deserve to be put in the best position to win with the best direction. I’m never gonna stop being a fan and counting wins.
I kinda get it that some players may have not wanted to stay on the field to watch USU celebrating a “storied victory” on Hawaii’s home turf. It’s the same reason I got outta there right after the last TD… I ain’t into feeling good for the other team’s success!
Like Patton said, let the other poor SOB die for his flag!

I’ll wait on judging the coaching staff till the end of the season, but not before…There are 4 more games and the team doesn’t need to feel like they’ve got their “backs against the wall” especially when its their own fans doing it.
The team is trying their best and I haven’t seen them quit in any of the games unlike the Von Appen years. 33 years is a loonng time and I still remember ST writing for the Ka Leo.
We never should have forced out Holmes and look what happened…Price and the Hula T. Nuff said…
If you are truly a fan, put your energies behind the team and not over them…

I’m not the smartest nor the most athletic person out there. In fact I rank pretty dang low on the totem pole.
That being said, I have enough energy and brain cells to put forth in supporting the team and the program all the while being able to call a duck a duck.
I tend to give players the benefit of the doubt. Seen with my eyes JJ take the same players that went 0-12 go to a winning season and a bowl win. What does that say? Miracles do happen, *clap clap*? Perhaps, maybe.
My biggest gripe is that as a whole our program has more resources, more support, more of everything than previous coaches ever had, yet we are churning out at best the same product. Off course the “same product” can easily be ripped to shreds by a multitude of facts and statistics about who we are really beating. But I tend to look at it in simple W-L records.
Mack can’t go on a radio show and say how “if we had more resources, more money etc. that we would be more competitive” all the while being handed a program with exactly that and expect fans to not wonder for 2 seconds why we can’t beat beatable teams and why we only wipe one butt cheek before we flush.

Just one small note of criticizm…I think the DC should be “on the field” and not in the pressbox…This is NOT a classroom, but a BATTLE, so the General should be on the field and NOT in a tent ranting about missed assignments.

The best change we made was getting rid of RAINBOWS thanks to JJ. I doubt if we have more resources than JJ and he left the cup board bear for the current coaching staff. Graunke went South and we had to scramble for a QB…
Any team can beat another on any given day especially with the parity on scholarships, etc. Granted, there are better facilities elsewhere, etc., but it really gets down to players making plays and having the “grit” to withstand adversity and BELIEVE they can win…
It wouldn’t help if their FANS would support them rather than “diss” them…

DShima: My daughter flying in from college in PNW…Where is Von Appen being inducted? Linfield? Honestly, I’ve been to Linfield and seen their HOF and Von Appen really doesn’t belong there…There are a number of island kids who played at Linfield who did more than Von Appen did there. I wonder if Hugh will be there???
