Recapping Call the Coach
Thank you to LC and others for helping me out since I had another commitment Monday night
thought it best to bring all the info over to one place.
someone asked about a replay. I know they do it for football but don’t believe they have done it for volleyball. You could call the radio station to request that they do. 296-2420.
From the Show
Scott: On the Jade Vorster graduating early rumors and about her not returning for senior year
Shoji: not true . Will play senior year as grad student Likes this present lineup.Realizes that some of the other players would like to play more and he tries to get them in whenever he can.
Caller: wants to know why Hartong set so many times at end of set 4 against AZ.
Dave: said even his sons get on him about going to Hartong too many times but in his opinion you go to your best player in crunch time.
About this week’s tournament.
Shoji: Good road test.WSU threw in a lot of extras to help out UH financially for this trip.
About recruiting said they have 3 commits for next year, good chance of getting a 4th
Not done with 2014 yet:
Cindy: Shoji can’t discuss the recruits until they sign in November but …
From LC and other sources: likely OH 6’2″ Kalei Greeley
MB 6’2″ Emily Maglio
L 5’8″ Savannah Kahakai
4th ? L 5-9 Gianna Guinasso (although I thought she was sand, and likely a walk-on)
From Cubicle: There seems to be have a friendly rivalry with chris lamb, the coach of wichita st. that might explain why they come to hawaii so frequently. at the end of the show, shoji mentioned that he and lamb were texting each other… lamb saying that if his teams beats hawaii, they could crack the top 25… and shoji texting back there was no chance! haha …
Caller asked something about losses that he will always remember and he replied one to Michigan State (Cindy 1995 ending an undefeated season after they were up 2-0) and one to LBSU (Cindy; guess he’s thinking 1989 when UH was hosting the final four)
Says that Hartong will probably get a crack at the USA team but needs more experience that she will get playing pro, doesn’t see her in the 2016 Olympics.
Shoji: talked to Kanani about the USA team as a libero, sounded like she would be up for it.
On recruiting: Ah Mow handles local kids,Scott has the mainland.
LC: Apparently Scott does all the work. Dave not all that involved until Scott makes recommendations to Dave who then takes a look see and makes final decision.
Cindy: don’t believe that to be completely true since Shoji does go to things like Davis, JOs to scout.
.
About Shoji recruiting, I believe what he said was that he doesn’t go on as many recruiting trips to the mainland anymore and delegates more of the recruiting responsibility to Scott. Dave still makes the final call though and said he meets with the staff on an almost daily basis to discuss recruiting. Said he doesn’t like the early recruitment of players, but is forced to do it since they will fall behind if they don’t.
About the recruit visiting, someone in the other thread said she was a junior so it looks like she is for the 2015 class. The other player for next year that Dave was talking about a MB, looks like is Annie Mitchem.
Thanks for putting it all in one place.
Now I think thoughts have turned to Wichita.
Dave tweeted early this morning that they were about to fly from Denver to Wichita on a prop plane.
Don’t believe it is Mitchem. She would be 2015. she is technically a freshman at IVC. needs to get her AA from what I’ve been told.
Just a thought about Mitchem. Although she is listed as a Freshman on the IVC roster she was going to school at IVC last year and probably was redshirting. She might be close to getting her AA this season and would be eligible to transfer for the 2014 season.Like I said I don’t know just a thought.
There are no rules about contacting a JC player like there are for high school athletes as far as I know, if she is willing to talk about her future plans she can although it might be nice if you went through the head coach as a courtesy.I remember when there were rumors about Cubi coming to Hawai`i I just asked her head coach at CSI and she verified that it was true.
if it was posted earlier, i missed it. did the coach mention anything about who will be on the traveling
squad to witchita state? thx.
Pestolesi said he was not ready to release any info. spoke to him two weeks ago.
probably because he wants to make sure she gets her AA first before he speak of any type of transfer. I have a feeling it’ll be mitchem
Some other things I remembered that I don’t think were mentioned earlier.
A caller asked about Texas’ volleyball budget. Dave said probably about 3x that of Hawaii’s budget. Said they fly charter, money basically is no object and they stayed at a $300 night hotel in Waikiki while they were here.
Someone else asked about with the departure of Croson what is the importance of “intangibles” on the team. Dave said intangibles are important but that UH doesn’t have the luxury of just recruiting high character, great students and who are also polished volleyball players. They have to take a chance sometimes on a great player who may fall short in some other areas.
We’ll find out tomorrow, but who went and who stayed home. Kyra Goodman, Keani Passi and Katiana Ponce are given so that leaves 15 on the roster. Don’t think they bring 15, one or two stays.
I sure hope this Casey from SD reported to be the recruit who was here isn’t the Casey I think she is. This had to be an unofficial visit.
USC and UCI are on ESPNU at 4pm if anyone is interested in scouting UCI.
According to the Wichita State web site, all the matches in the tournament will be available in on-line video and Live Stats. Don’t know if they will have audio (broadcast announcers).
The video will cost you but the audio I believe is free, their announcers.
It’s also on 1420 with Blaine.
Here is their Tournament Central with all the links.

thanks lanaiboy!
good group of girls coming in the next couple of years. Lots of height and athleticism! don’t see ah mow out much besides her coaching her club team. Maybe that’s where her local recruiting is taking place. Heard from a friend, at booster meeting, that wong did 70k miles of recruiting last year….that’s a lot of flying! GO BOWS!
For the South Dakota match audio from 1420 and video from WSU.
For the Creighton match audio from1420 and video from WSU.
For the WSU match audio on 1500 because of football on 1420, Audio (their announcers) and video from WSU.
So if Mitchem gets her AA, and by redshirting her first year at IVC, that would make her a RS-Soph in 2014. She gets to play 3 years.
LC, Casey from SD, could be, looks somewhat like her.
The Casey from SD I’m talking about is an Opp she’s around 6’0 skinny and has terrible stats but because I didn’t see her at the match I’m just going to leave it at that because I don’t really know if it’s the same person, besides it was just a visit and most of them go nowhere.
UCLA and Long Beach going to five!
SC swept UCI. Bricio with a wicked jump serve.
UCLA edged Long Beach State in five, 16-14 in the last set. Close match.Three of the sets went overtime. Both Long Beach and Northridge went five with UCLA. Expect these two teams to give Hawaii a battle, especially on the road.
#19 Long Beach should have won 3-0, they had a couple of swings to win game 2 but couldn’t get it done. This loss really hurts them in that in order to get to the tournament, the Hawaii game at Long Beach almost becomes a must win for them. They also can’t afford any more bad losses in the Big West after the loss to Air Force.
#17 No idea who you are talking about, but people at the match all said she was about 6′ 3, not 6′ 0, she was about the same height as Nikki Taylor.
6. i still don’t think it will be her for 14. Tom told me to call him later, like next year.
16. If that happened, yes, that’s true. But have been told she won’t be available for indoor until 2015. which will mean 2 years eligibility
Facts are Casey from San Diego, slim build, plays mb, 6’3″, junior, class of 2015, straight A student. Now we have some research homework to do.
How many players regularly travelled last year? I know it was 12 for WAC, but they brought 14 in the 2005 AVCA Showcase. If it’s 12, it will be Hartong, Uiato, Kaela Goodman, Adolpho, Tuaniga, Vorster, Olevao, Longo, Mendoza, Taylor and Higgins. Final spot will go to either Kastl or Long. If they’ll bring more it will be Kawamura first before Lelepali. Maybe Kawamura first before Long, since the former is part of the regular sub pattern.
24 My guess is that they took 14, all you have named except for Lelepali.
roofer, way ahead of you, data base search found only one Casey so far from entire SD area playing playing club ball but I have a few clubs who don’t post rosters.
Right now with so much going on this weekend hardy worth the time and also not all that important.
24. You may be confusing scholarship numbers (12) with travel numbers (14). They only took 13 last year for BWC play when Croson was suspended. Believe that was only because it was too late to add a ticket.
23. is it really worth the research time on someone who may or may not show up in 2015?
If it doesn’t come easy not worth the time,I agree.
27. I may be mistaken, but I remember they only took 12 players on the travel roster for the WAC. I know they took more than 12 for the Big West, but wasn’t sure if they were doing that this year. Also remember 15 players traveling for NCAA Tournament.
30. think they took 12 to some road games in the WAC because of the cost of travel.(Like LaTech/NMSU) They are allowed to take up to 14 for conference. NCAA tournament expands things and they have taken even redshirts to get them used to the travel experience.
30/31. well we will see at 3:00pm. hope kastle and kawamura make it.
26. 28. sorry I mentioned that. posters on other blogs were curious and one had a long discussion of the unknown recruit.
33. roofer, well I’m curious, got time to do some research.
Thanks to everyone for keeping me current. Cindy, I have been reading your ( and Ann’s ) reporting for over 30 years now, since when I used to sit with you both at Klum watching the Wahines. You two reporting and me keeping stats for Dave and Dean. I have long enjoyed your writing and now enjoy keeping up with the Wahines through this medium. I hope to get to see the girls two or three times this season in California and possibly, at regionals. Keep up the great work so I will be able to keep up. Thanks again. As always ” GO BOWS”.
35. Thanks Bob for the kind words.
We have been doing this for a long time. Ann in 80 and me in 81.
33. don’t worry about it. some people are more into the recruits than other. And i’ve seen too many come in, and leave, never hearing about them again that I feel it’s not worth the time to deal with the subject.
unless it was someone like Alix K, or when the group of Hartong, UIato and Goodman were on their official visit on the bench four years ago.
