• Right wideout Royce Pollard said he expects to play this week despite a tight right hamstring. If not, Terence Bell or Trevor Davis will start at right wideout. Davis practiced with the first-team offense today. Here are some of Davis’ catches:

I hope that the kick-protection is fixed!
If it was so easy to fix the kick protection so quickly…why were there multiple breakdowns during week 7 of the season? I will be happy if Mack’s pledge comes true and UH doesn’t have anymore blocked kicks, but Mack made it seem like there were specific things UH could do to fix the problem that make one wonder why it didn’t happen before.
I’m guessing that concerns over NMSU’s kick returner will lead to an added reason for the coaches to have UH kickoff short and high again this week.
I agree 100% with A-Joe. The key is emphasizing Hawaii’s assets to grow businesses that can flourish in Hawaii. The ag-tech business is a great example, and A-Joe is correct that many advances in that area have come from Hawaii.
There are some areas of the tech industry that could benefit from Hawaii’s location and unique assets. I spent a lot of time looking at this when I was asked by WassupDoc and the Hawaii Legislature to come up with a list and document the reasons why those tech industries would want to establish locations in Hawaii.
There are some fundamental reasons why that effort and other tech efforts haven’t attracted that many businesses and why growing businesses that start in Hawaii tend to move out of state. Location (space and cost of real estate), lack of tax incentives compared with other states, a greater concern over traffic increases than adding jobs, and no overarching vision by the state or local governments are some of the barriers.
I think moving Stutzman to wide is an excellent idea Darius Bright has been non effective. There were high hopes for this guy but apparently he just does not get it done! All size that’s it no ball and route skills. They should start clap and Jeremiah at slot.
According to this, BYU is softening their TV demands with the Big 12. When (not if) Missouri leads, BYU could bring the Big 12 back to 10 teams if things can be worked out with replay rights for TV. Replay rights on BYUTV could basically decide how strong the conference will be that UH is joining next year.

I agree that Darius Bright has been having troubles adjusting to the offense. He might need another spring training and fall camp to fully get comfortable, so I wouldn’t give up on him yet because he could be 100x better next season.
Looks like the Raiders will get their QB and Cincy will get the value they have been looking for from Palmer.

I think Bright’s turf toe was — and is — a factor.
Good morning Kekoa! I was off the blog yesterday because I spent a day in one of those environments where I didn’t have a computer, access to the internet, and they even had to take my phone away because it had a camera on it. It is nice to have some free time to blog after all the work I did on the weekend.
Is Bright still suffering from Turf Toe? What about Allen Sampson? Why shake up the whole receiving corps?
Someone crunched the numbers and found that the Big East with the additions they are rumored to be getting would be the #3 conference in Sagarin, ahead of the Big 10, ACC, and Pac-12. If the Big 12 takes Louisville, the Big East’s numbers actually go up since Louisville has the lowest computer rank in the Big East.
However, if the Big 12 goes to 12 schools, then the Big East is going to be hurt badly. They could replace those spots with 1-2 CUSA/MWC teams and still be the #5 conference, though.
I hope that this all just ends soon after Missouri goes to the SEC, the Big 12 makes their decision (my guess is they stay at 10 until they can get paid for a title game under a new TV contract), and the Big East’s situation is settled.

There’s such a money grab (through taxes) that it hinders business. I think Hawaii needs to foster a pro-business climate that will pay off in the future through more jobs; the government can recoup the money through income tax from the newly employed.
OK, wait. That just sounded like trickle-down economics.
One thing that I did NOT like during the MWC/CUSA merger press conference is that they talked about how they wanted MWC teams to play crossover games against CUSA teams. So, instead of playing nonconference games against Pac-12 schools and service academies like JD has been scheduling now, they want UH to play home-and-home nonconference games with schools like Marshall, Memphis, and Southern Miss that are on the other side of the country!

Being that were such a sharp media group, none of us asked the follow-up question: Which wideout position will Stutzmann play?
That’s what happens when a room full of reporters are focusing on asking the next kick-protection question instead of listening to Mack’s updates.

During the oil downturn in the 80s, the state of Texas realized that they couldn’t rely so heavily on the oil industry (kind of like Hawaii relies on tourism). So, they gave tax incentives for high-tech companies to relocate to Texas and the city of Austin gave out sweetheart lease deals for land in areas that didn’t have much going on (similar to certain places on Oahu that don’t have high population density).
The state didn’t lose any money because the tax incentives were geared to the number of full-time jobs created by the high-tech relocation. They made their money back within a year and then had a highly-paid workforce driving their economic growth. The city of Austin didn’t lose any money because the land that the companies were on wasn’t bringing in any money anyway, but the sales taxes spent on goods by all the new people drove the city’s economic growth. All the construction and expansion created tons of other jobs also.

One specific quote that bothered me was when the commissioners said that there wouldn’t be crossover games in the first year or two but seemed to state that crossover games would be required to drive up the value of the next TV deal. UH may not get any money from the TV deal but will have to fly across the country to play CUSA teams.
The MWC’s commissioner sure was quick to make it clear that UH will be paying travel subsidies even after the merger. Thompson gave no room for UH to ask for anything…and if he succeeds in killing WAC football then UH will have no choice.
The crossover games would make no sense for me. I’m still confused on where the MWC-CUSA title game would be played. Team with better record? The MWC would have an advantage because of the Hawaii exemption. Neutral location? What if Hawaii wins MWC?

When we move to MWC, is the Hawaii Bowl still going to have a CUSA team? Wouldn’t that be a bit redundant?
Frankly, if the 5 MWC/CUSA teams leave for the Big East as rumored and the MWC/CUSA merger will require UH to play CUSA teams with no extra money going to UH, I’d really like for JD to look at staying in the WAC. No travel subsidies, a contract that is currently being renegotiated with ESPN, UH keeping all its PPV money, should at least be looked at.
UH could try to convince Fresno/Nevada/UNLV/SDSU to move to the WAC. NM/Wyoming/CSU don’t bring any strength to the conference and don’t benefit UH. Thinking from a purely UH-centric position, if BSU and Air Force leave then UH might come out ahead by staying in the WAC.
Does UH have to pay the MWC’s exit fee if they never joined the MWC yet?

The other problem with the title game is that ESPN owns the rights to the CUSA title game FOR FREE for the next 5 years. If the CUSA stops having a title game but sends a team to the MWC/CUSA title game, then I bet that ESPN’s lawyers will get that game on ESPN for free.
Plus, a title game really kills the Hawaii Exemption by taking away a bye week for every conference member.

All of this stupid conference merry-go-round stuff is frustrating and distracting. There is no loyalty to anything anymore, aside from the dollar. Then, we got people like ESPN meddling in the middle of everything. Stinking TV needs to back off and stop interfering in the college landscape. The BCS and TV has destroyed everything. Everyone is so cutthroat now, it’s ridiculous.
And, something has been wrong with our state for so long, concerning any kind of forward-thinking vision. Wish everyone could be voted out, both at the state and federal levels. But then again, those uku-bazillion lobbyists will just stick their hand and money into the pot and corrupt the next batch of We-the-People-Reps.

Who said your MTV/HBO idea was silly? Especially if we can make use of our resources at UH, I think it’s a great approach to further our exposure. I also like how Australia is getting to see more of UH. We can continue the international exposure too, through UH Athletics and Academics. Just gotta get the right departments involved, and make a big push on research grants too.

I think moving Stuzman to Wideout would be a good thing. I also think moving Sampson to Slot should be explored because he’s shown the guts (& hands) to be effective across the middle. (His physical stature also seems to be more suited for Slot than WR.)

I know kicking is part of special teams,
but why can’t the regular offensive line block for field goals and point after touchdown?
From what I saw on the video lastnight when I watched the Coach Mack Show is the lineman who line up to block their feet are all reversed from how I was taught when I played and how we coach our players in high school. For Hawaii the guard and Tackles inside feet are behind the inside man. So the guards inside foot is behind the centers feet and the Tackle is behind the Guards outside foot. Which makes it easier to penetrate because if you were to attack inside it is easier to move the linemans shoulders. We teach to put you inside foot forward because it is easier to protect the inside and it makes it harder for the blockers to get in.
Also when I watch replays of the blocks the blockers are getting in between the guard and center. I am not blaming the center so much as I am the left guard. When you block for pat’s you have to stay low and protect the inside gap. Do not let anyone in your gap. Well when I watch the replays it looks like the left guard is pass blocking. Reason for it looking that way is because he stands up to block instead of staying low.
I am not so sure why Hawaii is set up the way they are and why no one has seen that and figured it out yet?

I think we have a lot of talent at our receiver position an I’m still not giving up on bright I think it be pretty good to have it like we did in 06 were we play an sub in receivers. I think moving Stutz would be good but I dont know he’s been pretty productive the last few games but I do think Clapp an Ostrowski both should start an so does Stutz.

For punt protection, is it really necessary to have 3 lineman in the backfield? You only have 7 guys going out for punt coverage. If it’s really necessary to have 3 guys back there, how about linebackers who can get out quicker on coverage. They are a more agile than the lineman in case the returner breaks through the first wave of defenders.
This comes to mind thinking about the blocked PAT. The lineman couldn’t catch a guy with a pulled hammy.
I know protection comes first for PAT/FG, but punt coverage can always use more guys getting down field.

Couch Potato – I agree about protecting the punter but I haven’t seen 3 guys rushing the punter yet. If 2 come in, I hope 3 linebackers can handle them. Most times, it’s only 1. All I am saying is it really necessary to have lineman back there? All the guys have to do is slow down the rush, not block them for extended periods. For coverage after the punt, it might be more beneficial to have linebackers?

In ’01 a friend and I had chance to meet a rep from UH’s OTTED department. OTTED was in charge of taking ideas developed at UH and finding companies that would develop it. He showed me a whole bunch of innovative ideas coming out UH.
There were several major problems that hindered OTTED from making anything happen:
-Upper UH management gave them limited authority to push any technology
-state offices in general are restricted to advertise their wares the conventional way
-contracts between UH and professors over idea rights were flawed
-OTTED existed in a system plagued with mismanagement
At the time, they had only one idea being marketed; A silo that burned and compacted green waste into high grade commercial charcoal. Makers of Kingsford Charcoal was interested. A local firm eventually secured the local rights to use the technology.
One blaring concern we noticed was most of the ideas being developed at UH had no immediate market value. It was like, “I have a solution. Now, let’s go look for a problem to solve.” Kind of ass backwards to me.
We suggested a system be set up at UH where you, me or any company can approach UH with a real world problem and partner up to find a solution. UH would supply it’s research capabilities. We’d have to find funding and justify a market. Any royalties generated would shared between UH and said parties.
OTTED and UH tried it for awhile but, it floundered because:
-UH couldn’t advertise to let everyone know about the program.
-professors didn’t want to work on someone else’s ideas other than their own.
I mentioned the OTTED rep every month I’d see in both Popular Science and Mechanics the latest innovations coming out of UC San Diego in a variety of sciences and disciplines. How in the world are they doing it. Why can’t UH and OTTED do the same. The OTTED rep told us they had a limited budget to even do such a press release.
I’m glad to currently see MRC Greenwood trying to emulate the successful system San Diego universities and the surrounding business community have developed. Those universities have pumped out both innovative ideas (which turn into viable companies) and a high end workforce to support it.
San Diego’s success has created a quandary. This past February the San Diego area listed over 8000 job openings in the information-technology, mechanical and electrical engineering fields. San Diego has two basic problems from attracting a higher end workforce:
-Cost of living
-Stigma of being a beach town.
(Sounds familiar?)
I would love to have San Diego’s dilemma right now. It’s not far fetch either. We all just have to work together to make it happen. Currently, there’s a working model in a local company that’s doing just that. Oceanit. They’ve developed several successful ideas that have spun off into separate companies.

Sweet contract for Boise’s coach Petersen. He deserves it. I’m sure there is nobody in Idaho huffing about the football coach being the highest paid state employee in Idaho. But then again, there’s always a few. I’m sure most folks are cool with the fact that this coach will make over 2 mil per year in 2016 so long as they keep winning. Winning cures all. So long as they keep being….uhhh….Boise, then coach will be happily compensated.
By the way, they are 5th in the current BCS poll.
20 years ago, who woulda thunk it? Boise folks probably did. Funny how a “bad” season nowadays is when they lose one or two games and don’t go to a BCS bowl.

the reason i think the Warriors employ that formation is because they supposedly have a kicker who can boot it 50+ yards with hang time allowing the tacklers to get downfield in their coverage areas. the formation is conservative but does have maximum protection. not sure who the ends are in the formation but they should be one of your faster players.
the good thing is the punting hasn’t been in the news about correctable mistakes, the bad news is where are those 50+ yards punts?

I gotta agree with you on that point. UH will never be like Boise because they cannot think like Boise. They finally put up a million dollar salary for a HC. Now they are dissatisfied with that contract. They do not think that their HC is worth his salary. They want to cut it by 45%. Is a 1.1 million too much for a good HC? If you want to compete, it isn’t. Meanwhile, our Associate and Assistant Coaches aren’t exactly dining in designer wear, either. I can understand if they don’t feel that Coach Mack is worth 1.1 million. BUT if they really wanted to move this program forward, then shouldn’t they be looking for that coach that they feel IS worthy of 1.1 million instead of simply cutting his pay? If, however, they think he’s good enough for our program, are they saying that our program should wallow in the arena that most 600K HC coaches play in?

would you say you lowered your expectations or just faced reality… i hear you, hurts a lot, but it is a realization that we will never get to the promised land…… with that said, our coach’s contract should be carefully reviewed and analyzed by not only those at Upper Campus, but also a disinterested 3rd party consultant. this is to insure that we are getting a fair ROI for the investment being made. it’s business, and collegiate sports is big business.

The legislature should strongly consider providing tax breaks for tech businesses in order to generate highly skilled jobs for the future. They should also consider that the added employees in these businesses will be paying state income taxes and will be paying excise taxes for goods purchased. However there are some in the legislature that have an old school mentality from the plantation days that businesses do not deserve any tax breaks. That type of thinking hurts the State and our future generations in the long run. BTW, I am not in the tech industry.

The saddest part is that we haven’t really increased our following all that much. Was it because of how badly our team lost in the Sugar Bowl?

RE: Our challenges in the kicking game
Just some dumb questions: What happend to the days (and coaches) when our place-kicker was referred to as “The Ice Man?” What has changed? How did we allow what we had to slip through our hands?

MIH and Couch Potato….Both are good points. I think we can get there again but have to remain focused on that goal and like lots have been saying, have “outside the box” thinking. If I’m not mistaken, BYU only got there once in 1984 when they actually won the National Championship which was decided by polls rather than a game…which really hasn’t changed much with the BCS, LOL.
UH also has to start promoting the program early on and have events that drum up support for the program, not only among students but also among the community. I mean, they sort of started doing that in 2007 when we were pushing for an undefeated season. I remember several rallies downtown with some bandmembers, cheerleaders, and stuff. They should do that throughout the year, especially as football season gets closer, not only when UH is doing good. I mean, c’mon, can you imagine the male lunch crowd in Bishop Square if the Rainbow Dancers and Cheerleaders showed up for a rally with the band members. Handed out pictures or sold their posters and calendars and stuff. That would drum up at least some support for the program….

Watching the Arkansas State – Florida International game on ESPN2 and Corey Batoon is the Special Teams coach, in addition to coaching the corners & nickels. Don’t know how he’s doing as a Special Teams coach, but he did a great job in Flagstaff at NAU on the defensive side. Always nice to see Hawaii people succeed.
Went to practice this morning. I think Kawika Borden made an interception during a one-on-one drill when his Mom was there. Always nice to see your kid making plays.

This is why personnel changes on special teams have led to no improvement in the protection. Without adjustments by the coaches I don’t expect any improvements this week.
personally, i look to my past post and blocking and tackling, especially tackling, is not a priority. we got some warriors who are doing a very good job at blocking and tackling, but from day one, they have been good at it because they had a good foundation in basic football. this year’s receivers need to work on their hands and don’t need to be using gloves to practice catching. strengthen your bare hands with the JUGS and build the callous in your hands.
i can see, bhf2, getting his pressure up whenver the JUGS was not being used or if it needed to be repaired.
Don’t take me wrong..I’m not saying fire Mack.. I’m saying if the higher ups don’t feel he’s the one to take us where we need to be, then they should be working in the direction to fix that. BUT if they feel he deserves a second chance with an extension, then, dang it! Shouldn’t they put their money where their mouths are and pay the piper. If not in the head Coach’s salary, get all the tools needed, raise the assistant salaries so that better assistants can be found where necessary, put more into recruiting. But don’t just take away money from the program to feed it elsewhere. Go all in … or why bother?
Because a 600K salary for a Head Coach is about average for those teams that lose more than they win more often than not.

There is a down-side to great success and making it to the “big dance”…everyone expects to be there again…every year. Maybe a reasonable expectation now since it has been proven it can be done. But every year we don’t return, the coaches that took us there look shabbier and shabbier until people start calling for a replacement who can somehow take us there again.
Me? I thank them for taking us to the next level, albeit once. Names like Shoji, Murakami, Wagner, Jones, and Coolen come to mind. If our current coaches can do it again, please hurry. But if they run their programs with integrity, the team has pride, and the athletes graduate, then I don’t call for their firing. But yeah, I’d like to see us in the big time post-season again.

I say start with a base pay of 500K with bonuses for Conference title and bowl game. An Additional bonus for a Bowl Win. Percentage of any BCS earnings from Bowl game. +PLUS+ Retroactive pay from previous year of $100K for every win over 5. So if he won 7 last season he would get a $200K bump for this season. BUT if he only wins 5 or less this season, he gets nothing added to the next year’s salary.
In Mack’s case that would have brought him an average of 500K + bonus for year 1, $700K for year two with no bonus, $600K for year three + bonuses for Conference title and bowl game… 1000K this year for having 5 wins over the 5 last season… approximately 700K/year + applicable bonuses.

I’ve been saying for the last 2 years that we need a kicker who can put it in the end zone to help our kickoff team as well as as good field position, not to mention less stress on the kick return itself. Last year, they got Hadden but he reshirted so that’s okay. But I haven’t seen him have the strong leg that some people has said. Maybe he’s hurt, I don’t know. I also noticed that his kicks are low, not like some guys who get the ball up high quickly. Maybe, it’s the position of the ball by the holder. I don’t know, but the coaches are there to coach in practice. I don’t see things change. I saw the replay of the blocked it several times on the extra point. I don’t want to mention any names, but one offensive lineman let this one defensive lineman come in so easily like he didn’t really try to block him. Of course, that DL blocked the kick. You probably saw it yourself.
On the turnovers and other gaffes it’s the old adage that we are our own worst enemies. We didn’t lose to San Jose St., we lost it because of our mistakes. Moniz is the most important person on the team because of his position. When he doesn’t play well, it is hard to win. He didn’t play well at Las Vegas and he surely did not play well at San Jose St. with causing 4 turnoveres in the first half. He played well against Colorado, UC Davis, and La Tech. At Washington, he played o.k. but not good. Don’t belive me. The Indianapolis Colts is 0-6 because they don’t have Payton Manning. Russell Wilson came to Wisconsin and he has them undefeated and scoring a ton of points. The Miami Dolphins, 0-6 also, do not have a good QB. Anybody knows why Boise St. is so good. Kellen Moore is a 4 year starter. Thankfully for us, he’s a senior. My point is that because we run the Run and Shoot the QB is everything to our offense to make critial plays. Moniz has been very inconsistent this year. I notice he’s dosn’t play as well on the road compared to home. Colt Brennan played well when we needed him the most. Against Boise St, against Washngton, against Arizona St. etc. etc. He made big plays in the 4th quarter at La Tech and at San Jose St. In 2006 and 2007 Brennan didn’t have bad games and in 2 years UH was 23-3 including the Hawaii Bowl and the Sugar Bowl, with the exception of Georgia. It wasn’t Brennan’s fault. Our offensive tackles did not stop the Bulldogs DEs from coming in so fast that Brennan did not have time to make all of his reads. Had Moniz played good on the 3 road trips we are likely to have won those games. You can’t say he’s the Holy Grail so we are still looking for the next one.
We lose as a team. Physical errors, and poor coaching decisons or non-decisions all spelled us losing on all 3 road losses. We should win easily this week as 21 point favorites at home. Unfortunately, because of what has happened this football team is not to be trusted. We are Murphy’s Law. Six blocked kicks in 6 games makes me sick. Unbelievable.
Only three who played football in last 25 years are in — Onosai, Elam and Tanuvasa. Love all three but MVPs of Holiday Bowl were Michael Carter and Junior Tagoai. Chad Owens wasn’t even nominated. Neither was Timmy Chang, Nogas, Garrett Gabriel. Vince Manuwai. Ashley Lelie. Holiday Bowl team.

All I know is I’m an old fut, and Niko Noga is the best UH football player I’ve ever seen play. When we were UH students, we used to go early just to watch Noga warm up. He was a defensive lineman who could block kicks. Just a great athlete.
And I remember MIchael Carter playing option quarterback all season … with a broken rib.
And Garrett Gabriel beating BYU. Twice. People don’t realize how that was an even tougher challenge than beating Boise State twice.

Coach Mack said the football team was responsible for about $16 million in revenues. Added that his budget is $3 million where as programs like USC has football budgets of over $20 million. He also said that Boise State spends most of it’s revenues on football which is why they don’t travel economy like UH. This was is a response to a question on how we could become the next Boise State. Basically Mack’s response was we will need to spend money on our football team like they do.

Stephen, I agree that Falaniko Noga is one football stud at the University of Hawaii. He was 225 lbs. and he pllayed middle guard. What a body too! But, for my money the guy that combined both UH and the NFL career, Jesse Sapolu is the best. 4 time Super Bowl champion and OG at UH in a steller career. The irony is that Noga and Sapolu both prepped at Farrington.
My all time favorite is Colt Brennan, hands down. He was the pied piper that people followed. His announcement to return to UH for his senior season was the most exhilarating feeling I have ever witnessed. All the TV stations covered his announcement with baited breath. When he made his decision, people in the room and everybody who were watching just erupted with joy and tears. I will never forget that. The rest is history. 12-0 in the regular season, Sugar Bowl. Led by June Jones, it felt like that the 2007 season had the possibility of being great if things fell our way. And it did. Some miracle finishes in 4 games, beating Boise St. at home on National television. It felt like it was meant to be and that the man up stairs was watching every move and helping us. The team had a lot of faith and Jones preached to “play for each other.” C.J. Hawthorne provided so much inspiration with his strong faith in God. We long for the day that another season like that can happen. The pride that the people of Hawaii had for our 2007 team cannot be duplicated. It was the best of time. So much so that more than 10,000 Hawaii fans went to the Sugar Bowl. Impressive.
And, although the 2007 team went 12-1, I happen to think that the 2006 team, 11-3, was better. I thought it was more dominant. Brennan’s best season was the 2006. He was on fire. 58 touchdowns passes. Still an NCAA record. Some ungodly pass efficiency percentage which let the country. Hawaii lost early road games against Alabama and Boise St. but the games were close and we had the feeling that this team would be good, and they were.
salaries should be fair compensation for what you are worth to the organization.
in peterson’s case, he is worth every penny considering where bsu is today and what that program is worth in of itself.
comparisons of salary amounts while not comparing the end product is…well, you know.

New high tech businesses have been getting major tax breaks for years now, but there has been significant unhappiness over the results. Will do some research as to what these tax benefits are to the companies and the impact they have on generating jobs and the impact on overall tax revenues.
Why are people unhappy over the fact that the 40th Anniversary of Title IX is being used to support women who have helped level the playing field, so to speak.
What are you planning to do if do you find out who the members of the Selection Committee are? Boo their honoree selections?
Walk around the Circle of Honor – there are about 110 honorees – and I doubt seriously if there are more than 25 women.
If you want to honor particular individuals, then submit their names and a brief description of their careers to the Department of Athletics administration with a cc. to the UH Administration and the Board of Regents shortly after July 1 of each fiscal year.

I don’t think Mack was referring to just his salary, but rather the $$ allocated for the Football program itself, from Coaches salaries, practice equipment, tutoring, recruiting, travel expenses and more. I agree with him. UH doesn’t spend enough of the revenues generated from Football to take the program to the next level.

The 12-0, 2007 team had the weakest schedule of all Div. 1 teams that year which included 2 Div. 2 wins. We struggled to win a few games that year but the excitement created was probably unmatched. The year before or the team that went 9-2 (Bob Wagner) and won the Holiday Bowl may have been better. I think the Georgia game just brought us back to reality. If we had a decent schedule, would be have been undefeated? If not, we would never have gotten to the Sugar Bowl. Maybe what we need is a weak schedule like that every year. Hard to argue with an undefeated team no matter who you play.
Did all the people in this year’s Circle of Honor actually graduate? I truely hope so. I think ALL people in the UH Circle of Honor should be graduates of UH. I don’t know the list, but isn’t that one of the requirements?

Federal government contract spending is a major driver of the tech industry in places like San Diego with its Naval and defense research and Austin and the State of Texas generally. Texas is probably the second highest state in Federal contract spending and this has greatly helped the economy of Texas.
The question is as Federal spending slows (assuming it does), will this be sustained– most people feel Federal funds will continue to flow to companies in these areas.

The economy in Silicon Valley is being driven by companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook…not Federal Government spending.
The economy in San Diego is being driven by *commercial* tech companies led by Qualcomm and the ecosystem around it. That is why Samsung, LG, Motorola, and a host of other companies are actively hiring engineers and computer scientists here. Designs are done in San Diego and the products are sold throughout the world, bringing a lot of money back to San Diego and the US from overseas.
You are correct that some of San Diego’s growth is due to government programs–but the programs are actually in growth areas such as UAVs. General Atomics went from a tiny company to a behemoth that now drives its own ecosystem. DoD spending for UAVs is *growing*, not shrinking…and now police departments, customs and border patrol, and homeland security are expanding UAV usage. It also is a lucrative export industry for the US.
UH has the highest budget in the WAC.
UH spends far more on football than SJSU or UNLV.
UH pays its head coach far more than SJSU or UNLV pays their coaches.
This was not a good week for Mack to make that type of salary comparison…not when UH just played SJSU and UH’s football budget is far above SJSU’s.
#165 papajoe2: – Well I know that Brooke Wilkens did not graduate from UH, she wasn’t allowed to come back and play her Jr, and Sr years. She played on the 96 Australian Olympic team that won the bronze medal and was given something like 15,000.00 for doing so which ended her UH career by the NCAA. She did go home to Australia to get her degree. I can just imagine what the record book would look like had they let her play the two years they took away from her.
In just two seasons with the Rainbow Wahine, she was a two-time All-American and led Hawai’i to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances in 1994 and ’95
She holds the school career records for wins (58), including 32 shutouts and five no-hitters, strikeouts (585), and earned run average (0.68).
She earned Big West Pitcher of the Year award in 1994 and 1995 she was the program’s first NFCA first-team All-American with another 29-win season. She led UH to within two wins of its first Women’s College World Series appearance.

The legislature have had a High Technology Investment Tax Credit in
place since ’03. The problem with this tax credit is it does not
specifically define what “high tech” is. It’s definition is broad. A
huge window of interpretation is left open. Many in the film industry
began using the tax credit. Also, people were buying credits and
sitting on it in hopes of somehow using it to their advantage.
Credits were being divvied out. Next to none were showing up in
perceived sectors intended for.
The other challenge is if you give too much tax credit to one sector,
other sectors with no breaks (yet are still looked upon to shoulder
the state’s economy) spurn dissension.
The challenge with developing a tech industry takes on a chicken and
egg effect. What comes first- Tech industry itself? Or a highly
skilled workforce? If it’s the industry first, do they import their
skilled workers to Hawaii until Hawaii schools can produce workers
itself to meet demands? If it’s the skilled workers, does our school
system crank out skilled workers only to have them go abroad and work
until some tech company sets up shop in Hawaii?
So what can be done to promote growth?
-Tax incentives that encourage venture capitalist to invest in local industries.
-Emphasize on strengthening support industries such manufacturing
would help tech industries.
-Require more business and entrepreneurial curriculum into the school
system. Elementary, Middle, High School, College…
-Convert basic college curriculum to be all online. (Sitting in a
large auditorium is an archaic concept)
-Develop better trade schools and programs.
-Make government services more easily and readily accessible. Be more
people friendly.
-One of the key ingredient in any kind of business is if you can show
someone how they can make money with your idea, they will support it.
If you can show unions how their members can make money in the tech
industry, you’ll have the most incredible support to take Hawaii into
the next century ever seen!

Thanks al but I am not the “number one fan”. Everyone supports the team in whatever way they can. Most people might not want me traveling for the road games, so far I am 0-3 – UW, UNLV and SJSU. I was not at LA Tech and the team won. I will not be going to Idaho so we should win. I’ll be going to the Nevada game (actually running away from APEC) so hoping that the team will prove I am not bad luck for this season.
Since the 2008 season, I have attended 12 road games and the team is 3-9. hmmm… I expect to get a phone call from Mack later to ask me to stay home.

I thought UH had the highest athletic budget mainly due to the amount of travel required?
Our isolation is also another reason that coaching at Hawaii is more difficult than any comparable school on the mainland. Not so easy for coaches, as well as recruits and their families to just pack up and drive to meet each other. If this wasn’t such a challenge, we should be able to land any head coach we wanted at the current contract price range. Most big name coaches understand the dilemma we face, and would rather sit pretty on heaps of cash at already established schools. It makes their jobs much easier, with 5-star recruits climbing over each other trying to get in.
So, would we rather have the head coach from SJSU or UNLV, to go along with their dismal W-L records? We also have coaches here who know what Hawaii is about. Try bringing in a pretty successful, but total stranger, and see what happens. (Oops, we tried that with VonAppen.)

When we lived in Warren, Michigan, they ended up closing the “Detroit Arsenal” Tank Plant. There was lots of talk during and after the closing as to how best to use the space. It was decided to be turned into a Tech Center. To attract businesses, they designated it a “Renaissance Zone”, complete with all kinds of tax breaks.
Wonder if they could do something like that with a place such as Barber’s Point?

That’s a good suggestion. the thing is Barbers Point is premium real estate and not short on ideas of what both the government and private sector would want to do. All kinds of developers are clamoring for that area.
There are several incubators in the islands that serve the purpose of nurturing tech start ups. The problem they have is stocking their spaces with start ups. Allot of times, to make ends meet, they have to rent/lease their spaces to existing businesses. Some of which are not in the tech industry per se.
So, do sections at a time, instead of just having the land sit idle and not producing any income at all. They need to come up with an overall plan, and start implementing it in phases. Doing nothing is not helping anyone, while we go deeper and deeper into red.
I lived there. I grew up there. Even went to kindergarten at Barber’s Point Elementary. Lots of wide open space to accommodate everyone’s plans. They could even keep a huge section for TV Studio stuff for future island productions. Just do something!
Just wondering, why can’t our kickers just chip shot the extra point in. And kick straight line drives out of the endzone for a touchback.( be barely make it past the 20 ) We always give the other team good field position..Or is it they want to kick it high on kickoff’s so we can cover it better……Just my observation.
I agree with Wes’side warrior on #181. This is the reason why it does take someone special who has an understanding of Hawaii and the love of the culture. Another coaching example who struggled after being successful at BYU is Frank Arnold. He just could not get the cultural picture. We have the right coaches for the job. Our Warriors need your support not the continued negativity that exist in these blogs. The school made a change from Wagner to Von Appen so the grass is not always greener on the other side. So Wes’side you hit the nail on the head and you are supported.
