Aloha Wednesday

After completing a 2-hour practice this morning, the Warriors headed to San Jose.

Updates:

• London Sapolu will indeed make his first career start Friday. Sapolu said his pre-game ritual is to call his father, Jesse Sapolu.

• With Andrew Faaumu suffering an undisclosed ailment, there is possibility David Lefotu or Matagisila Lefiti will start at right guard.

• Kicker Tyler Hadden said X-rays did not show any fractures or tears to his right hip. He said he has been suffering pain there since the start of the season, and it worsened last week. He said he is feeling better this week. He said the ailment has not hindered his kickoffs. He said he was instructed to used directional kicks in the first five games.

• Associate head coach Rich Miano said safety John Hardy-Tuliau made seven interceptions during drills yesterday. Miano said the key is Hardy-Tuliau has learned to read the receiver first and the quarterback last.

• Friday’s game will be shown live in Australia.

    Hi A-Joe!

And football is one day closer than usual!

As for the future of our coaches and UH Athletics, I must give it up to Ke Akua to stay positive.

It’s all about the PEOPLE. I love the joy athletics brings for so many people.

We will always find another way to celebrate the human spirit in the sea of change.

    Mahalo, Ke Akua!

    God Bless!

Every year the challenge with every team is finding themselves. What is the dynamics that make up the character of this team.

Our Warriors have found their groove.

Their offseason labor is coming to fruition.

Each player knows what they can bring to the team concept.

There’s trust and respect amongst each other.

    Everyone has each other’s back.

I’m proud of these men whom have set forth to represent us.

    I MUA WARRIORS!!!

  13. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2011 7:00 am

Good to see we have adjustments made to the roster and it appears that most of the wounded have returned to practice. Looking forward to Friday’s game.

  14. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2011 7:03 am

Yeah, what A-joe said in #11.

The team is set. All that’s left is kickin’ butt and taking names. If the Warriors stay focused, hungry and humble and don’t let up until the games is pau, then we’ll do great.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2011 7:04 am

    BTW –

Good Morning to you, A-joe! 😉

London Sapolu will get the start at center.

Kenton Chun will handle the field-goal attempts up to 40 yards.

Tyler Hadden will handle the rest of the placekicking duties.

  18. A-joe October 12, 2011 7:09 am

Aloha Kakahiaka, DPK; my braddah frum annada maddah!

  19. Garret October 12, 2011 7:18 am

Those look like good changes by the Warriors and it is nice that Brett Leonard is back in the lineup in time for SJSU.

  20. Garret October 12, 2011 7:19 am

I’m sure that the Warrior D is prepared for SJSU’s excellent TE…hopefully the scout team was able to simulate the TE and give the D a good look at SJSU’s offense.

Otten enters Friday night’s homecoming game against Hawaii as one of the most productive tight ends in the nation. Among Football Bowl Subdivision players at his position with at least 3.0 receptions per game, no one can match Otten’s 15.5 yards per catch or his two 100-yard games.

Over the past three outings, he’s totaled 21 catches for 318 yards and three touchdowns. He has three receptions of 35 yards or more.

And as far as locker room bragging rights, Otten has a trump card: His per-catch average is nearly double that of starting wideouts Noel Grigsby (8.6 yards) and Chandler Jones (7.9).

  21. duffer October 12, 2011 7:40 am

    Off topic…

Manny Pacquiao’s next fight maybe in Hawaii at Aloha Stadium.

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid October 12, 2011 7:43 am

How bout that duffer? I was watching the news, and it indicated that Hawaii is his first choice for the location of his next fight.

  23. Ipu Man October 12, 2011 7:56 am

Thanks Garret for your #20 alert to SJSU mighty Tight End info.

Hawaii seems to always suffer against teams who employ tight

ends. Wham-Bam! They hit us for a long one it seems. Even

tackle eligible plays can be dangerous. Hope Aranda is on this…

  24. A-joe October 12, 2011 8:00 am

    duffer/DPK-

There is a contingent of local investors trying to get the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight to be held here. Pacquiao has agreed. Mayweather not. Honestly, I’m not sure if there’s any amount that’ll convince Flo to fight Pac.

I wonder if the locals have enough capital to stave off a mad blitz by an LV casino/PPV package. There’s gotta be something up the local’s sleeve or back pocket that’s giving them confidence to toss their hat into the pot. They’re not showing all their cards just yet. =)

Looking forward to a great game Friday!

Tight Ends have been our bane for years upon years. Time to change that!

    Go, Warriors!

  32. kawika49 October 12, 2011 8:51 am

a belated Happy Birfday to Wes’side Warrior in Georgia!!

  34. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 9:02 am

6’6″ TE?!! How tall is that when he jumps? That’s going to create a lot of mismatches down field and in the End Zone. Hope our guys can jam him at the line of scrimmage long enough to throw a wrench in their plans.

  35. Hawaiianbod October 12, 2011 9:06 am

    good morning Tsaikos!

safe travels to ST and the Warriors.

    happy hump day!

  36. Old Diver October 12, 2011 9:10 am

Stopping a tight end is a matter of stopping the run. Stop the run and you make the pass to the tight end predictable. I’m hoping for a great performance from our front seven.

  37. Wes'side Warrior October 12, 2011 9:19 am

    Mahalo, A-House!

  40. bigislandkurt October 12, 2011 9:30 am

Probably not gonna be Mayweather, but I think there’s a good chance we see a Pacquiao fight in Hawaii. Filipinos from all over the US and Pacific will converge on the state for that one. Aloha Stadium fight?

  46. A-joe October 12, 2011 9:48 am

If a Tight End is leading your offensive stats, it can only mean either two things:

-Opponents are successfully shutting every other offensive facet of your game

-Your other facets just aren’t good enough to produce.

    I took a look at SJSU’s stats.

    PASSING

SJSU’s passing game is led by Senior QB, Matt Faulkner- 98 of 156 for 1119 Yds with 4 TD’s against 4 picks and 6 sacks. One dimensional. Not much of scrambler. Stays in the pocket.

SJSU has looked to switch up the tempo and plugged in Sophomore QB, Dasmen Stewart. In four games Stewart is still building confidence in his passing game- 21 of 52 for 158 yds with one INT and 2 sacks. Dasmen has relied on his running instead and is the second leading rusher with 102 Yds on 20 carries and 1 TD.

    RECEIVING

Leading SJSU’s young receiving corp is Junior Tight End, Ryan Otten- 24 receptions for 372 yards and 3 TD’s.

Sophomore Noel Grigsby is SJSU go to guy to move the chains with 39 receptions for 336 yards.

Freshman Jabari Carr has stepped up his game in his inaugural season and has himself 16 receptions for 207 yards and 1 TD.

Sophomore, Chandler Jones, has 22 receptions for 174 yards.

    RUSHING

SJ ground game led by Senior RB Brandon Rutley: (91 rushes, 501 yards) He leads the team in scoring with 6 TDs. Rutley’s been used as a relief valve from the backfield and caught 7 passes for 76 yards.

I have a 5:15 pm meeting this afternoon across from Big City Diner in Ward Center so I’ll be able to watch the first two volleyball sets.

A LOT of things coming up here in Hawai`i over the next two years will impact the future of UH sports.

Abercrombie’s new chief of staff has major financial ties to West O`ahu private developers. The key issue which will determine which direction(s) the decision(s) will go is the transit system – build or not build.

    Mr. A-House,

I went to look at the rock garden & took a couple of pictures. Thanks for beautifying that area. Do you want some dryland kalo to add to the area? Is it going to be watered regularly?

  54. papajoe2 October 12, 2011 10:58 am

Darn, getting older is becoming a drag. I played in an IBEW golf tournament on Monday. The group that was playing with us had a guy named Blly. He said that his very good friend’s son is a sophmore from a west high school in Pennsylvania that stands 6’3″, 170#, blazing fast, wide reciever and is tearing up the league. I asked him if the kid would be interested in coming to Hawaii. He said, “you never know, he has friends here.” I wrote down his name and high school but I think I left it in the golf cart upon completeing our round of golf. His last name could be Fowler or something similar and is on You Tube. I couldn’t find it. Shucks, I forgot the info on this kid and didn’t think of it as I wrote it down. I just got through stripping down my golf bag but, nada. Oh, well. At least I remembered he was from Pennsylvania or did I forget that too? bwahahaha

  69. papajoe2 October 12, 2011 11:50 am

My take on ST’s pictures yesterday of the kickers. On Tyler Hadden’s pix, it seems as if his plant foot is too close to the ball, which usually results in pulling it, thus missing to the left or not making good contact and could shank it to the right. Alex Dunnachie’s plant foot is too in back or short of the ball thus denying him distance. Niiro’s foot plant foot is in a similar position to Alex’s but more up on the ball. I studied Jason Elam’s record 63 yard kick in the NFL and his plant foot actually was past (beyond) the ball, not next to the ball, thus equating to more “drive”, creating distance. Every kicker has his own style and may not be “textbook”, but you would like the kicker’s plant foot about 12-15″ on the side of the ball. Approach would be at an angle so as to getting their hips into the kick. Follow through would be to their target or in the instance of a right footed kicker, slightly toward the left. Practice should be repeated over and over again so it becomes natural, like a golfer would want his swing. A lot of missed kicks, while blaming the kicker, is actually the holder’s fault. Late placement, wrong area placing the ball, bad angle of the ball, etc.. The kicker and holder should have a spot as to where the ball will be placed and as soon as the holder recieves the ball, should start toward the ball. Look at how the NFL holders use their hand to mark a spot and the other hand to signal the snapper or get ready to receive the snap. Almost forgot a very import part about kicking fgs. The kicker’s plant foot should always point towards his target. They might get away once in a while if the plant foot does not face their target, but on a consistant bases, nope. Many more on kicking, like body posture, correct line to their target and others. This is just my take on basic field goal kicking.

  70. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 11:53 am

I guess the Warriors are at the airport, eh? Is ST with them?

  71. Stephen Tsai October 12, 2011 11:58 am

Otten reminds me of Dustin Keller when he was at Purdue.

Otten aligns in the slot, or wide, and he’s excellent on slants and crossing patterns.

UH has used Waylon Lolotai, an offensive lineman, to portray Otten in practices. No, they don’t expect Lolotai to catch like Otten. But they just wanted the look.

  72. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 12:01 pm

So they need to jam Otten at the line try to delay him and pressure the QB at the same time. He’s too tall and big to allow free range..

  73. papajoe2 October 12, 2011 12:05 pm

ST, I’m just taking a chance, but do you know where those kicks of the pictures went? I know its kickoff kicks, and is a little different from field goals because field goals have a smaller target, although you would probably like the kickoffs go to a certain area. Alex and Kyle’s probably went higher and shorter.

  74. Bryson October 12, 2011 12:06 pm

My guess is that we will use alot of Nickle schemes on D…its not like we haven’t played teams who use a tight end the key is to get pressure up front early and often on D…as for the “O” they gotta stay hot and get us a substantial lead early so that SJSU is forced to rely on their passing game which really isn’t that great…

  75. Bryson October 12, 2011 12:07 pm

My guess is when Mr.Otten Meets Mr.Paredes he won’t be going across the middle too much after that…

  76. Wes'side Warrior October 12, 2011 12:11 pm

PPJ2… I tried searching for some Pennsylvania prep football stuff, and most names mentioned are Seniors and Juniors. One big name that keeps popping up over and over is this WR named Kevin Gulyas. The kid just flat outruns by everyone. I’ll keep searching for Sophomores, but I’m just wondering who will get Allentown Central Catholic’s Gulyas or his QB, Brendan Nosovitch.

  77. papajoe2 October 12, 2011 12:16 pm

WW, his name could be Foster, maybe even be Faulkner. That’s why I laugh at myself. I forgot his name AND forgot the paper that I wrote on too.

  78. kawika49 October 12, 2011 12:22 pm

PPJ check with the tourney, about your foursome, or the golf course.

  79. warrior Dave October 12, 2011 12:23 pm

    Pomai,

    35-17 WARRIORS!!!!!

    Mahalo!

  80. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 12:23 pm

At 6’6″, 235 lbs and good hands … Otten’s will be more than just another TE and nuisance. If SJSU prized RB, is good to go on Friday, too, we may have our hands full on Defense. Warriors better be ready to lay some smoke on Offense from their first possession.

  81. Slugger October 12, 2011 12:24 pm

    A-House,

Don’t the palm trees in the rock garden area get watered? Didn’t look like there’s a small flat area for a zen pebble garden where I can use a small rake and …. ok, forget it. 😀

Auburn is cleared by the NCAA about Cam Newton’s father shopping him around colleges. Also, Auburn players got cleared for all infractions. Eeeeyyyyyuuppp. I knew so. Right.

  83. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 12:24 pm

BUT.. I like that Tuliau is making those interceptions… turnovers may be the key to a victory come Friday.

    Now, the team gottas win.

  91. Hawaiianbod October 12, 2011 1:02 pm

Wes’side Warrior – i know you reside in Georgia now, but were you ever a Detroit Lions or Detroit Tiger fan? Both teams are having great seasons.

  92. Wes'side Warrior October 12, 2011 1:25 pm

I followed the Lions even during those dismal years, ever since Dominic Raiola was drafted by them, back in ’01 or so. Was happy when Ikaika Alama-Francis joined the team in ’07, but due to his pec injury, he never really got a chance to do much.

It was kinda hard not to follow the Tigers, since they were always on tv or in the news. They too had weird years… especially that most-losses-by-an-AL-team… followed a couple of years later by their World Series appearance. So much expectations in ’07. They started off on fire, then just faded towards the end of the season, when they needed to be hot.

So, yeah, followed them and the Pistons and the Wings a bit, but not as religiously as our Warriors. Still, though, it’s a lot of fun when a championship is being celebrated by the whole city.

With this new exposure to Australia it’s a good time to realize we need a UH commercial that features the essence of going to school in Hawaii, what UH has to offer, what a student will bring and share with us and what a student will gain carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Although cute, the current commercial tries to emulate Kamehameha’s 2010 Lip Dub. Makes UH look like a party school.

Then again, who knows what images motivates a kid to seek higher education today. =)

Australia Live!? How about in China?

Wondering ‘Google China’ will let me download live broadcast of Warriors game on ESPN?

They say they’ve watched many NBA Live (Not publicized) games in China.

Where do I go in Beijing Time Zone: Saturday 7:00 AM

    Help me Tsaikos!

  102. Derek October 12, 2011 2:03 pm

Seven interceptions in drills yesterday!!! “HOLY PICKS”. I’m really going to watch Hardy-Tuliau on every play on Friday. Let’s see how many picks he can get. Nothing better than Hardy-Tuliau getting a pick and Art Laurel giving him a great block to take it to the house for a pick six. Then we can say we’ve seen the Laurel and Hardy show. Right “Ollie?”

Hope Hadden is o.k. and it’s not real serious. When the game is on the line, the kicker just might be the deciding factor. Talk to Brotzman at Boise St. last year. That one kick meant the Las Vegas Bowl or a BCS bowl. In fact, Brotzman missed 2 field goals. One to win the game in regulation and one in OT to give Boise St. the lead. Since he missed, Nevada got the last shot in OT and their kicker, Martinez, made it. That was probably the most

disappointing loss in Boise St. history. To this day, I think they are still in shock.

Today’s line is down to -5 1/2. People are jumping on San Jose St. since the line started at -7.

Yes, it’s great that City of Detroit have finally something to cheer about.

And a double whammy at that with both NFL and MLB teams.

I’ve passed through the City and not much to cheer about. But the Fans here are much like Philly’s Fans they are very passionate for their team – Win or Lose.

    aloha everyone,

DPK, from the last blog, ryan is doing fine. For those with Facebook, I tagged you with some photos, he looks like the Bionic Man with a custom elbow brace on his rt elbow. That’s the one he dislocated against Wyoming in the 3rd quarter.

Football is a violent sport, and there are injuries. He is healed up and raring to go, they play Idaho State this Saturday and we’re heading out for the game.

  109. Slugger October 12, 2011 2:47 pm

    Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

    Oi! Oi! Oi!

    CoolEthan,

The broadcast was probably in the works months ago. They were filming the interview with Scott before the WA-LV away games. I’m sure someone figured out the viewership spike on ESPN Australia when broadcasting the UH-SJSU game. In the past two seasons, I’ve had two Australian families sitting next to me at the games. They were all just on vacation & decided to take in a Warriors’ game. One family had read about Alex in their local paper. His interview on ESPN Australia was broadcast last year.

  110. A-joe October 12, 2011 3:04 pm

Is UH still rebroadcasting UH football games in Japan a week later?

Mikey, maybe could somehow do that in China. The Chinese won’t have a clue what’s going on but, all we need is just 1% market penetration. That’s 13,000,000 sets of eyeballs. Get a compelling enthusiastic translator and we’re in business!

    Maybe Korea too.

  111. Pomai October 12, 2011 3:19 pm

  123. bleedgreen October 12, 2011 5:01 pm

If Warriors play to their history on National TV, they will choke. I don’t know what it is, but Warriors find ways to play their worse when the cameras are on. Maybe they are looking in the mirror too much to check out their hair.

  124. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 5:17 pm

I thought they broke that curse earlier this year.

  125. bleedgreen October 12, 2011 5:18 pm

ST, wasn’t Chauncey Makainai the starter at right guard when the season started? I know that he got hurt early in the season, but has since returned to practice. What’s happened to him?

  126. bleedgreen October 12, 2011 5:31 pm

They won at LaTech, a great win on the road, but it wasn’t a national telecast. Earlier, they lost at Washington and UNLV, so I would say the curse is still on. They did beat Colorado to atone for their miserable loss at Colorado last year, so a win at San Jose will go a long ways in the eyes of the national audience and should help with recruiting. I really hope they win. Doesn’t have to be big, just a win will be good enough.

  127. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 5:33 pm

    I think Colorado was ESPN.

Chauncy is going to split time with Legay at right tackle.

After his injury, it was decided that Faaumu and Lefotu had improved enough at guard to force chauncy’s move to tackle.

  130. Old Diver October 12, 2011 5:44 pm

I don’t believe in curses. We don’t win regularly on national tv because aren’t weren’t good enough. If we win on Friday it’s because we are good enough. I am predicting a win on Friday.

  141. Not an Expert October 12, 2011 8:04 pm

Eastern schools has a lot of alumni in the network power positions. They will and can manipulate whatever they need to do to keep the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East ahead of the MWC, C-USA and the WAC. The 3 latter conferences are no match because of this.

The MWC, C-USA and WAC (should of, could of) form a coalition to build themselves over the years. Instead they try to outdo one another which has created them to be divided and conquered.

If the MWC loses BSU and Air Force the league should fold. Reposition themselves with the C-USA and the WAC and start over with these 2 conference creating a coalition and a long term plan. The MWC TV money sucks anyway and it can’t be any worse for the schools of the MWC.

  142. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 8:50 pm

Shoots.. I didn’t know the Wahine were on ESPNU … oh well.. glad they won. But NaMaSu took them to 5 sets… that should wake the Wahine up a bit.

is friday’s matchup the second “trap game” of the season?

    consider this…

the opening line was hawaii -6.5.

for a brief moment it went up to -7 then has stayed at -6.5.

on paper one would think the warriors would be a much heavier favorite. i’m thinking -10.

however, its stayed at this level in spite of the betting trends swaying towards the favorite visitor.

like i always say, the vegas oddsmakers know a lot more than the average bear.

    do you smell a trap?

watch where you walk “yogi baby”.

  150. Bowwar October 12, 2011 11:16 pm

I knew there was something wrong with Hadden…I wonder if this kid will ever get well…

We might be in the market for a new kicker next year…

  151. madeinhawaii October 12, 2011 11:23 pm

If it’s anything like seasons past, I expect a lot of turn overs with Hawaii taking advantage of the sudden change more often than SJSU. During the last last two weeks things went our way with turn overs … If I recollect correctly, it was after games like these that our Defense started to really take charge and our Offense started to play loose but with great efficiency. When the Offense has confidence in the Defense, good things happen.

  152. Lopaka43 October 12, 2011 11:24 pm
