Re-Graduation
Greetings and good tidings of joy to to all in this Holiday Season.
I wanted to write this note because vicariously over the years as I’m watching the Warriors on the field I often wonder how it feels like making a big play and having the fans screaming and cheering…”gees I wished I could have done that in my (limited) playing days as I watch one of our player sack the QB”. But equally what has escaped my grasp in life, vicariously speaking again, and equally important than wishing to having making the big plays on the field is graduating from college…”and then again I wished it was me receiving the cheers and smiles as I received my diploma today”…(as I’m typing…jokingly pausing to wipe a tears out of my eye and the choking in my throat…a flashback hits me suddenly and moment to reflect on the 50 toiling menial years…”if only had I listened to my elders back then”). Today I see that 18 Warriors are graduating and I can imagine how encompassing that this is, too. And how good they must feel about themselves. Moreso, I’m thinking, that all the big plays on the field pale in comparison to graduating. For I’m thinking culminating what you start out to do in life, like pursuing an education, defines you as a person. And for these 18 they have. And they have my respect. So without any more digression on my part…here’s what I have to say.
Graduation day for the 3 former team mates and 15 seniors on the Warrior football team is today. And is a proud moment. And as Coach Mack alluded on an earlier radio show, “I’m so proud of my guys that pictures of the graduates will go in his trophy case”. As one listens to that radio show Coach Mack speaks with such emotion and happiness seeing his players getting their diplomas. And if imagining there was a blocking sled or punching bag nearby that represented the demons of what leads some players not to graduate an unsuppressed Coach Mack would wallop it every time when he sees one of his players going astray. That’s how charged up he is in wanting to see his players succeeding. You can feel the vibes and the electricity when he talks.
When Coach Mack speaks with such reverence he is motivating. And insulating his players from the pitfalls that some gravitate to. Anomalies, myself included that played football back in the day, who represent the 40 to 50 percent that annually don’t end up graduating he doesn’t want to see.
The pitfalls for some players are so obvious. Having the will power to sustain the guidance and wisdom of their elders, especially their coaches, are partaking them into full focus mode where they are disciplined enough to stay the course doing their studies… but instead unfortunately some implode and don’t. I was surely was one of them. For my approach to school was like a carnival, meaning that I had to go on every ride. And being away from home for the first time and having no one looking over my shoulder it was easy to fall prey to the vices of what other kids and team mates succumb to,like partying,smoking,fornicating and drinking. With occasional all nighters being the norm. Keg parties on the weekend, with poker games on the side tied in with all this new found hoopla it was easy for a student athlete like myself to fall into oblivion. I surely did.
With Coach Mack, in what one perceives, when you hear him talking he is like the “sine qua non” (indispensable element or condition) in the players matriculation at the UH. And surely to be looking over the players shoulders. And this is so benefiting to the players that he does this so that they don’t wonder off and stray on the dark side and all the trappings.
For the graduating Warrior football players today, I, along with many other fans and Tsaikos salute you by saying…veni,vidi,vici…I came, I saw, I conquered…for you certainly did and with Coach Mack in the house there is surely much more of your team mates to follow. Congratulations.

My cuz who is the ND alumni ticket co-ordinator said that they are now selling a block of tickets in the South End Zone, section C. That’s where we are! As the Coach says, we gotta be on our good behavior. They are also going to have a tail-gate at Richardson Field.

colorado state rb ran for 279 yards today….FSU sucks, embarrassed themselves with such poor defense…Brandstater is considered a 5th round pick, better than Colt’s prediction last year, what a joke..FSU should have run the ball all game long, Brandstater decision making is sub par, threw a pick right to the DE
It made me happy that my rams won the game, coming back . Fresno really blew it in the end. I am a 60 ram graduate. I gave up on them and stop all my money support when they shaffed us when they pulled out of the wac.

So how many times did Kekaula have to repeat courses because after 10 years the slate is “cleaned” and you start from scratch. Go, Robert K!!!!

Dawn really would love to meet up with as many Tsai-kos as possible but will be leaving for the Big Island on December 23 so she cannot make the T-Gate.
Again a reminder – season ticketholders in any sport will get 50% off on up to eight menβs basektball tickets for Tuesdayβs game with UC-Riverside. They did UH in last spring during the Bracketbusterβs game.
I understand that thereβs a karaoke call afterwards, but donβt party too late because The Final T-Gate of the season starts around 9 or 10 am Wednesday morning.

Mahalo for all your kind thoughts – it was painfully difficult to say aloha to our 16 year-old beautiful black cat, but it was also absolutely necessary. DrDoc held Hercules as the veterinarian euthanized him. It was quick – less than five seconds – and painless.
However, it won’t be long before a homeless cat or dog will present him or herself to us. We’ve been tagged at Crane Park, Kalihi Stream, Waiahole Beach Park, the Kailua Post Office, the wheel wells of several cars, under a bus, in a closed dumpster (three times), and the UH campus (twice). A couple of times we had to rescue cats from being abused by a group of teenaged boys. Several have come from shelters or from our veterinariam who had rescued the kittens after the mothers had been killed by stray dogs. .

Kekaula, I believe, earned his degree in communications. He had to take three courses to complete the work.
Including Nate Russell and Welch, I believe the Warrior total is up to 20.

Manti Te’o seems to be a fine young man, an exceptional athlete & an
excellent student. I wish him well wherever he goes. That being said, if he ever helps his future team beat our football team he will forever reside in my personal Hall of Shame; a hall filled with local traitors who helped our opponents beat UH athletic teams. If he should come back to Hawaii & is playing against UH, he can expect to be booed by myself & many others. I’d rather just concentrate on (and appreciate) players who want to be here & want to play for the Warriors.

Navy’s head coach kind of put down the classes he took at UH. I’m sure that he didn’t mean to do so, he just wanted to praise his players.

Really, very very nice to see the pics of the graduating Warriors. That’s how, bruddahs. That’s what it’s all about, and hats off to Mack for making graduating his players priority number one – really shows his character. If I had a son, I’d want him to play for someone like Mack.
As for Kekaula, I remember back in the early 80s he was my friend’s roommate up in the UH apartments. I think it was a summer session. I’m over one day, and Kekaula cooks up a fish, the kind stuffed with mayo and I think lup chong. Broke the mouth good. Guy coulda been the next Sam Choy, but I guess he’s done all right. Good to see him get that degree as well.

Kafentzs? should have walked in the graduation, calling it just a piece of paper shows where his priorities are-he is not nfl material so receiving his diploma would be a memory he can cherish the rest of his life…. Football helped mold his character but won’t be giving him a job. I guess he wasn’t paying attention to coach Mac’s wisdom of education first and its not all about football at the university

Participating in commencement is a personal issue and it is up to the individual whether to walk or not. And it is true, it is just a piece of paper. What a college graduate does with the piece of paper after graduating is what counts. Participating in commencement doesn’t mean anything if you don’t take advantage of your degree. JMO
By my rough estimate, about a thousand students walked today, which means about 800 didn’t.

Aloha Stadium’s field turf is starting to look flat like the St. Louis turf. Do we have any turf experts in Hawaii to help keep these fields in shape? I hope we don’t have to wait for Pro Bowl field staff in Feb. for advice.
I felt like Kafentzis re graduation. Every day was a sacrifice, and to try and give meaning to a one day ceremony seemed oddly disrespectful to every minute of every day of hard work spent earning the degree.

Great news about Kristin!
I think that there is one major thing that people missed in protector’s post. He said that *if* Manti helped Notre Dame beat UH in the Hawaii Bowl then he’d boo Manti in the future. But how is Manti going to help Notre Dame in the Hawaii Bowl? What secrets does he have about the Warriors to share and what insight would he have on the Warriors’ game plan that the Notre Dame coaches won’t have already figured out from the tape?
So, if you really read what protector said, his whole threat of booing was never going to take place.
I’m unhappy that the MWC beat the WAC in today’s bowl…the Pac-10 beating the MWC today just makes all non-BCS conferences look bad, but the MWC beating the WAC makes things even worse.

We’ve always acknowledged that the bottom of the MWC is better than the WAC, but the top 3 of the MWC passed the top 3 of the WAC this year (especially if you include Fresno State in that top 3!).

A de-icer broke down at PDX. Used to help clear the runways. the other de-icer cannot keep up. Bad snow and ice everywhere at PDX. The wind has created lots of problems, too. The cross winds are the most problematic.
So far SEA is open with some delays. NWA and Haw’n have direct flights from SEA to HNL. 1st flight out is at 8a. Is there an Aeroporter van that he can catch from PDX to SEA? Might cost him some but at least he can get out if he can get a seat.

If #2 can get out of SEA on Monday there is a way for him, tomorrow to get up to this area.
It is a long shot but it is an alternative.
Tomorrow the Seahawks play in Seattle. There is a Sounder train that leaves from Portland that will take Seahawk fans up to the King Street Station up in Seattle. About a $30 cab fare from that area to SEA is a possibility. Problem is that of housing.
If the Sounder stops at the Centennial Station in Olympia that is another solution. Have him get off at the Centennical Station. I can pick him up and get him to my place — hot shower, warm rooms, a couch on which to sleep, decent food, and a ride up to SEA via me or the Aeroporter Shuttle.
Of course, the trick is for him to be able to get a flight out of SEA.
Let me know what you both decide.
As my wife and I walked through the mall today she happened to notice a picture of Colt Brennan in Pictures Plus. She remarked, That’s a nice picutre of him, he was truly a one of a kind person (not player, not athlete), person.”
We were season ticket holders for over 20 years and I never thought my wife was ever so engaged in a game as when Colt played. Take nothing away from Garret, Timmy, Rolo, Raphel or those folks. There was just something about that young man.
That started me thinking, and he’s not even from Hawaii! Yet, we do so embrace this person, cheer him on, wish him every bit of success and await for his triumphant return, win or loose back to Hawaii.
Was there ever a person or athlete in the last 4 deacdes, born and raised in Hawaii, staying home and playing for Hawaii who ever received so much love? Maybe the last one was Derek Tatsuno, but back then no one from the continent really sought him.
My point is, when will one of our own realize that we really do love our athletes and would really love to see the day when someone saw that being keiki o ka aina really meant something that went beyond the big name and lights of someone elses reputation.

Usually if we get any weather it is for a day or two and melts quickly. This year is very unusual with this Arctic Blast straight out of Canada.
Definitely want to bring a good jacket, though. It will probably be cool and wet!

OFF SPORTS TOPIC – OR MAYBE NOT
I don’t know if any of you have ever heard of a viral video which actually made it to prime time tv – well, at least to PBS – called The Last Lecture. I’d heard about it but never took the time to record it & then watch it couple of weeks ago.
Now I am not someone who proselytizes and tells people about The Chosen Way; however, I strongly urge that you take a couple of hours to watch the video or to read the book and then think about what Randy said that day and what impact it can have on your life.
On September 18, 2007, computer science professor Randy Pausch stepped in front of an audience of 400 people at Carnegie Mellon University to deliver a last lecture called βReally Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.β
BTW – his included playing in the NFL.That didn’t happen but the lessons learnd from being part of a team stayed with him forever.
With slides of his CT scans beaming out to the audience, Randy told his audience about the cancer that would claim his life in a matter of months. On the stage that day, Randy was youthful, energetic, handsome, often cheerfully, darkly funny. He seemed invincible. But this was a brief moment, as he himself acknowledged.
Randyβs lecture and the book he wrote based on the same principles celebrate the dreams we all strive to make realities come close to being true.
The lecture is NOT about dying. It is about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment because “time is all you have… and you may find one day that you have less than you think.” It is a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It is about living. .

That is one reason why I just put all of the links in the website field. No need to worry about the length of the URL. NYUH asked one time why I use that field, but I just find it easier for me to not have to figure out if a URL is too long or not.
I post so many links that anything that saves time really helps! I know that tinyurl had a problem with one version of the blog software so I had to stop using that at that time…I never checked if it works now because the website field makes it not necessary.

Did I mention that it was Momo’s Anniversary on the day of the blog party? Unfortunately for him, he had to work in the morning, then babysit in the afternoon, and then Mrs. Momo had to go to a church meeting that night…so they didn’t celebrate that day.
I remember when Momo cut off their financial support of Colorado State. They used to donate to both UH (Mrs. Momo went there) and Colorado State (they had a major that I don’t think UH had back then) until then.

It is sad to miss New Years in Hawaii–being with family and eating all that good food while watching football is such a tradition. Last year at least I was with my parents in New Orleans, but this year we’ll be in San Diego away from everyone.

As expected from previous articles, Miami’s coach made it pretty clear that they are in the process of moving Samson to guard. They are going to do it in limited stretches right now because Johnson is recovering from injury, but I think that Miami’s head coach (who used to be Johnson’s OL coach) has that in his long-term plan.
I showed my Mom the picture of Kekaula, and she said, “He looks so happy.” My reaction when I first saw that picture was, “There he goes again, clowning around.” π

Let me put it this way…I donated enough to scholarship programs at Texas (mainly the merit-based ones that I received when I went there) that I have a lifetime membership to their alumni association and they had a fundraiser schedule his flight to San Diego so that he could meet with me to discuss the new Dean of Engineering. I appreciate that those scholarships made it possible for me to go to college without being a huge burden on my parents.
On the other hand, I’ve never donated a single cent to Stanford.

I don’t think I mentioned on the blog how I never donated to Stanford…but you probably figured everything out and I know you have a great memory.
I loved living in the Bay Area–though when I was a student I lived in East Palo Alto and the pizza guys wouldn’t come to my apartment because East Palo Alto was pretty scary then. It was a lot cheaper to live there!

It’s about the world view of a very practical man in academia. I like his story about applying to Brown University out of high school, only to be wait listed. He wasn’t satisfied with waiting it out and just hoping for the best; he called the admissions office every day to inquire if his status had changed. He was eventually admitted to Brown. He half joked that the Brown people likely got tired of his persistence and let him in to stop the incessant phone calls. I can appreciate his determination as I died on two wait lists in my day, never having thought of checking on my progress (or lack of progress). As he said, brick walls exist to separate those who are truly determined from those who aren’t.
If you haven’t already seen the video (or read his book, for that matter), do so; it’s time well spent.

Pride is my local hero. The more I thought about it, through the haze of yesteryear, I do remember him playing UH. I didn’t know him then, and I forgot all about him for a long while, but I’ve come to know him as a Tsaiko this past season and reading his stuff here on the blog and listening to him recall why he stayed home,

Maybe wafan can dress him in his old *JPO* uniform and pass him off as a “Mission Essential” operative to assist the Secret Service in guarding Obama.
I do think it’s OK to remind players to keep their heads in the game when they commit bone-headed penalties though. Like Malcolm “Slash” Lane from time to time (don’t get me wrong, he’s a good player, wants it badder, and has a shot to really shine next year).
