good to see Gerald Welch came back to complete his degree….but to late to help the warrior APR when he completed his fb eligibility.

  6. Ralph December 20, 2008 11:28 am

per kekaula students lose credits applied to a degree if to many years lapse-so how many courses did robert repeat each time to keep current…

WOW — Congratulations to RK and the Warrior graduates!

I am really pleased to see him graduate!

  11. Ralph December 20, 2008 11:39 am

Fresno state defense sucks real bad…gave up 345 yards in the first half but they lead 21-20

  12. Ralph December 20, 2008 11:41 am

Fresno needs to help the WAC gain respect by beating MWC Colorado State…then Boise State will go on to beat TCU…Utah beat TCU by 3 points, Boise needs to lay the hammer on TCU to show the BCS they deserved to be in the BCS and not Utah…

  13. Committed Road Warrior December 20, 2008 11:47 am

    Congratulations to all the graduates!!!!!

Ralph, I too wonder how many courses RK had to repeat to maintain currency.

    Show up
    On Time
    Ready to play
Unfortunately most people fail at least one of these.

    Re-Graduation

Greetings and good tidings of joy to to all in this Holiday Season.

I wanted to write this note because vicariously over the years as I’m watching the Warriors on the field I often wonder how it feels like making a big play and having the fans screaming and cheering…”gees I wished I could have done that in my (limited) playing days as I watch one of our player sack the QB”. But equally what has escaped my grasp in life, vicariously speaking again, and equally important than wishing to having making the big plays on the field is graduating from college…”and then again I wished it was me receiving the cheers and smiles as I received my diploma today”…(as I’m typing…jokingly pausing to wipe a tears out of my eye and the choking in my throat…a flashback hits me suddenly and moment to reflect on the 50 toiling menial years…”if only had I listened to my elders back then”). Today I see that 18 Warriors are graduating and I can imagine how encompassing that this is, too. And how good they must feel about themselves. Moreso, I’m thinking, that all the big plays on the field pale in comparison to graduating. For I’m thinking culminating what you start out to do in life, like pursuing an education, defines you as a person. And for these 18 they have. And they have my respect. So without any more digression on my part…here’s what I have to say.

Graduation day for the 3 former team mates and 15 seniors on the Warrior football team is today. And is a proud moment. And as Coach Mack alluded on an earlier radio show, “I’m so proud of my guys that pictures of the graduates will go in his trophy case”. As one listens to that radio show Coach Mack speaks with such emotion and happiness seeing his players getting their diplomas. And if imagining there was a blocking sled or punching bag nearby that represented the demons of what leads some players not to graduate an unsuppressed Coach Mack would wallop it every time when he sees one of his players going astray. That’s how charged up he is in wanting to see his players succeeding. You can feel the vibes and the electricity when he talks.

When Coach Mack speaks with such reverence he is motivating. And insulating his players from the pitfalls that some gravitate to. Anomalies, myself included that played football back in the day, who represent the 40 to 50 percent that annually don’t end up graduating he doesn’t want to see.

The pitfalls for some players are so obvious. Having the will power to sustain the guidance and wisdom of their elders, especially their coaches, are partaking them into full focus mode where they are disciplined enough to stay the course doing their studies… but instead unfortunately some implode and don’t. I was surely was one of them. For my approach to school was like a carnival, meaning that I had to go on every ride. And being away from home for the first time and having no one looking over my shoulder it was easy to fall prey to the vices of what other kids and team mates succumb to,like partying, smoking, fornicating and drinking. With occasional all nighters being the norm. Keg parties on the weekend, with poker games on the side tied in with all this new found hoopla it was easy for a student athlete like myself to fall into oblivion. I surely did.

With Coach Mack, in what one perceives, when you hear him talking he is like the “sine qua non” (indispensable element or condition) in the players matriculation at the UH. And surely to be looking over the players shoulders. And this is so benefiting to the players that he does this so that they don’t wonder off and stray on the dark side and all the trappings.

For the graduating Warrior football players today, I, along with many other fans and Tsaikos salute you by saying…veni, vidi, vici…I came, I saw, I conquered…for you certainly did and with Coach Mack in the house there is surely much more of your team mates to follow. Congratulations.

  24. MeiLing December 20, 2008 12:55 pm

Ho’omaikai to all of the graduates, including RK! Way to go!

My cuz who is the ND alumni ticket co-ordinator said that they are now selling a block of tickets in the South End Zone, section C. That’s where we are! As the Coach says, we gotta be on our good behavior. They are also going to have a tail-gate at Richardson Field.

Can’t believe I’m rooting for Fresno St. watching the CO State game.

  25. Kekoa December 20, 2008 1:03 pm

roysan16 ~ They say confession is good for the soul. You have been brutally open and honest about your choices in life.

No worries…You’re a graduate of the school of *Hard Knocks.* Your degree in Life’s Science is well-deserved.

I congratulate you for making it this far. Now, keep going for the gusto!

  26. chawan_cut December 20, 2008 1:06 pm

Congrats to all who walked today!

btw, Fresno sucks. NO D. choking at the end of games as usual.

  27. Committed Road Warrior December 20, 2008 1:11 pm

Fresno’s choke job on D makes me 0 for 2 in bowl game picks today…..

  28. FloridaTed December 20, 2008 1:24 pm

    Tsai-Meister,

Thanks for the pictures of the graduates. Makes me feel happy and proud of these young men. It’s not easy to be a good student athlete in D1. Kudos to Kekaula and Welch.

  29. Ralph December 20, 2008 1:34 pm

colorado state rb ran for 279 yards today….FSU sucks, embarrassed themselves with such poor defense…Brandstater is considered a 5th round pick, better than Colt’s prediction last year, what a joke..FSU should have run the ball all game long, Brandstater decision making is sub par, threw a pick right to the DE

  30. Momo December 20, 2008 1:34 pm

It made me happy that my rams won the game, coming back . Fresno really blew it in the end. I am a 60 ram graduate. I gave up on them and stop all my money support when they shaffed us when they pulled out of the wac.

  31. Ralph December 20, 2008 1:37 pm

good man Momo, and next time the alumni sends a request to you, let them know they should have stayed in the WAC and should not have been so sneaky.

  32. A-House December 20, 2008 1:39 pm

Again, congratulations to all the Warriors, past and present, graduating today.

Also, to all students at UH-Manoa for the many sacrifices your family made for you to reach this day in your life.

  33. A-House December 20, 2008 1:42 pm

    ST:

Way back when, I was told, “Horita, you can take up to 10 years to earn your degree.” “You already used 8 so get on the stick”. Dean Alan Saunders, College of Business Administration.

So how many times did Kekaula have to repeat courses because after 10 years the slate is “cleaned” and you start from scratch. Go, Robert K!!!!

  34. A-House December 20, 2008 1:44 pm

And to Gerald Welch, a most sincere congrats for getting that degree and to your entire family for helping Colt in his time of need.

  35. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 20, 2008 1:49 pm

Just a quick reminder – please join us for a hosted Football & Food Call this Sunday at Murphy’s to meet up with Kamali’o NYC, a long-time lurker who grew up in Hawai`i (McKinley class of 1968) who now lives in The Big Apple. Dawn will be bringing along her step-son and his wife – they’re both professional musicians.

We’ll be watching the Giants v. Panthers game – pre-game stuff begins at 3 pm – and then will head out to Aiea for Mexican food at El Mariachi – arriving there around 7 pm.

If you don’t want to come to Murphy’s for the game but want to join us at El Mariachi, please do so.

The restaurant is not easy to find so you’ll need to caravan out to Aiea from Murphy’s if you’re not already familiar with its location in a multi-level shopping center directly across from Aiea Medical Center and McDonald’s on Moanalua Road. There must be at least 20 retail and restaurants surrounding a parking about half the size of the playing field at Aloha Stadium but split in two sections.

Dawn really would love to meet up with as many Tsai-kos as possible but will be leaving for the Big Island on December 23 so she cannot make the T-Gate.

Again a reminder – season ticketholders in any sport will get 50% off on up to eight men’s basektball tickets for Tuesday’s game with UC-Riverside. They did UH in last spring during the Bracketbuster’s game.

I understand that there’s a karaoke call afterwards, but don’t party too late because The Final T-Gate of the season starts around 9 or 10 am Wednesday morning.

    **********

Mahalo for all your kind thoughts – it was painfully difficult to say aloha to our 16 year-old beautiful black cat, but it was also absolutely necessary. DrDoc held Hercules as the veterinarian euthanized him. It was quick – less than five seconds – and painless.

However, it won’t be long before a homeless cat or dog will present him or herself to us. We’ve been tagged at Crane Park, Kalihi Stream, Waiahole Beach Park, the Kailua Post Office, the wheel wells of several cars, under a bus, in a closed dumpster (three times), and the UH campus (twice). A couple of times we had to rescue cats from being abused by a group of teenaged boys. Several have come from shelters or from our veterinariam who had rescued the kittens after the mothers had been killed by stray dogs. .

Congrats to all the grads…and way to stay in school, Kekaula!

  38. Stephen Tsai December 20, 2008 2:14 pm

Kekaula, I believe, earned his degree in communications. He had to take three courses to complete the work.

  39. Stephen Tsai December 20, 2008 2:15 pm

Including Nate Russell and Welch, I believe the Warrior total is up to 20.

  40. Stephen Tsai December 20, 2008 2:15 pm

If it means anything, Manti Teβ€˜o was at Notre Dame’s practice today.

  41. shark December 20, 2008 2:20 pm

Congrats, to all the Grads and go Warriors in the 4th quarter!!! The game is not over till the gatorade is dumped on the coach and we all run across the field for the joy of the win. yeaaaaaa!!!!

  42. al December 20, 2008 2:21 pm

congratulations to all the graduates (you too, big guy)!

and you too mr. welch….i know “hulu” is very proud of you.

  43. protector December 20, 2008 2:31 pm

Manti Te’o seems to be a fine young man, an exceptional athlete & an
excellent student. I wish him well wherever he goes. That being said, if he ever helps his future team beat our football team he will forever reside in my personal Hall of Shame; a hall filled with local traitors who helped our opponents beat UH athletic teams. If he should come back to Hawaii & is playing against UH, he can expect to be booed by myself & many others. I’d rather just concentrate on (and appreciate) players who want to be here & want to play for the Warriors.

  44. Garret December 20, 2008 2:36 pm

Congratulations to all of the graduates!

  45. Garret December 20, 2008 2:42 pm

I’m glad that SJSU is getting their new turf in now, so when UH plays them next season the field will be much better than last time…I can still remember that mud.

After the SJSU football team finished the 08 season, the field at Spartan Stadium is finally getting a makeover. The facility upgrades are mind boggling for SJSU fans, as never before has so much happened to the stadium in SJSU Athletics history.

  46. wafan December 20, 2008 2:42 pm

    roysan16, Warrior graduates, and RK . . .

    Bravissimo!

  47. Garret December 20, 2008 2:43 pm

The Detroit News mentions the Hawaii Bowl…but not in a very positive way.

Notre Dame is putting a lot of meaning into what most people consider a meaningless Hawaii Bowl.

There will be no rankings at stake when the Fighting Irish (6-6) face Hawaii (7-6) on Dec. 24, no matchup of Heisman Trophy finalists and certainly no team feeling as if it had been bypassed for a BCS game.

The Irish, though, still believe they have plenty to play for, topped by trying to end their NCAA-record nine-game bowl losing streak.

  48. Garret December 20, 2008 2:45 pm

Navy’s head coach kind of put down the classes he took at UH. I’m sure that he didn’t mean to do so, he just wanted to praise his players.

“For everything that these kids go through, I want them to enjoy themselves,” said Coach Ken Niumatalolo, who went to the 1989 Aloha Bowl as a player at the University of Hawaii. “The classes they’re taking here at the Naval Academy are a little different than what I took at the University of Hawaii. They don’t have ‘the geography of Honolulu’ or things like that. . . . I’m always in awe of what these guys do.”

  49. wafan December 20, 2008 2:45 pm

Apparently SJSU did not have a bunch of clowns disrupt the installation of their new field. Good for them!

  50. Jay December 20, 2008 2:46 pm

Congrats to the graduating Warriors and Mr. Kekaula. Good luck in your future and kick some @ss on Wednesday.

    (can I say @ss? I can say @ss right?)

  51. wafan December 20, 2008 2:48 pm

It would be odd for Navy to offer “the Geography of Honolulu”. Perhaps they offer “the Geography of Annapolis” or “How to Swim in One Easy Lesson” instead?

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

#2 son doing okay at PDX? It started snowing about four hours ago — again. This time it is the really teeny-tiny powder-snow. Tonight the winds are supposed to kick in.

  57. Manoa Mist December 20, 2008 2:59 pm

Really, very very nice to see the pics of the graduating Warriors. That’s how, bruddahs. That’s what it’s all about, and hats off to Mack for making graduating his players priority number one – really shows his character. If I had a son, I’d want him to play for someone like Mack.
As for Kekaula, I remember back in the early 80s he was my friend’s roommate up in the UH apartments. I think it was a summer session. I’m over one day, and Kekaula cooks up a fish, the kind stuffed with mayo and I think lup chong. Broke the mouth good. Guy coulda been the next Sam Choy, but I guess he’s done all right. Good to see him get that degree as well.

GEOG 366 Geography of Honolulu (3) Development of Honolulu and Oβ€˜ahu from 1778. Evolution of function, land use, and social patterns. Contemporary planning and environmental issues arising from urban growth.

    Me, I just took GEOG 102. πŸ˜€

I wasn’t one of those who was boo-ing Micah Matsuzaki and his teammates when they took the field back then. As heated as the hype for the game was, it didn’t feel right doing that to a keiki o ka aina.
Cheered like all heck for Walter Murray (?) when he went mano a mano with Kurt Gouveia.

  74. Ralph December 20, 2008 3:50 pm

Kafentzs? should have walked in the graduation, calling it just a piece of paper shows where his priorities are-he is not nfl material so receiving his diploma would be a memory he can cherish the rest of his life…. Football helped mold his character but won’t be giving him a job. I guess he wasn’t paying attention to coach Mac’s wisdom of education first and its not all about football at the university

What a college graduate does with the piece of paper after graduating is what counts. Participating in commencement doesn’t mean anything if you don’t take advantage of your degree. JMO

  78. el guapo December 20, 2008 4:19 pm

By my rough estimate, about a thousand students walked today, which means about 800 didn’t.

Way to go Graduates young and old!

Wining your diploma is as big a victory as you can ever have.

Being a Warrior and earning your degree is a double victory which few can aspire to. Thank you to all of you from the Warrior Nation!

That’s good news! Just remember, one day at a time. One day at a time. There were times when Estelle almost wanted to give up but she fought through it then, too. Just one day at a time. Now, we forward to every new morning together and are ever so grateful for what might come our way.

booing…….nah, not for me. he is somebody’s son or daughter no matter who they are. i admit some have not done anything to not make themselves the brunt of the boo birds. jeremy perry for one comes to mind, his attitude did tick off many including some warrior friends of his in 2006 at the aloha stadium.

still, no one deserves that kind of stuff. i recall micah matsuzaki’s time, for me, i knew him as a child, a baby, and i felt for him and his parents. i recall speaking to tim chang’s father during the boo days of our quarterback. what a gracious man of much integrity, inspite of the pain and held back tears.

people, booing a college student has no place at any arena.

    …nuff said

Aloha Stadium’s field turf is starting to look flat like the St. Louis turf. Do we have any turf experts in Hawaii to help keep these fields in shape? I hope we don’t have to wait for Pro Bowl field staff in Feb. for advice.

  102. lava December 20, 2008 7:42 pm

I felt like Kafentzis re graduation. Every day was a sacrifice, and to try and give meaning to a one day ceremony seemed oddly disrespectful to every minute of every day of hard work spent earning the degree.

    Curveball,

    Great news about Kristin!

  106. Garret December 20, 2008 8:09 pm

I think that there is one major thing that people missed in protector’s post. He said that *if* Manti helped Notre Dame beat UH in the Hawaii Bowl then he’d boo Manti in the future. But how is Manti going to help Notre Dame in the Hawaii Bowl? What secrets does he have about the Warriors to share and what insight would he have on the Warriors’ game plan that the Notre Dame coaches won’t have already figured out from the tape?

So, if you really read what protector said, his whole threat of booing was never going to take place.

  107. Garret December 20, 2008 8:10 pm

I’m unhappy that the MWC beat the WAC in today’s bowl…the Pac-10 beating the MWC today just makes all non-BCS conferences look bad, but the MWC beating the WAC makes things even worse.

  108. Garret December 20, 2008 8:11 pm

Nice analysis of the MWC in this article.

This bowl season is huge for the Mountain West, a struggling 10-year-old conference that’s suddenly making strides in football.

The MWC has taken flak, been made fun of, put down and teased over the years for what it is not. But times have changed.

The new bark of this league isn’t going away anytime soon, and those who rule this league believe they’re on the brink of something important, like getting an automatic bid to BCS bowl games someday, if the trend continues.

Utah’s second BCS bowl in four years, a crack at a formerly No. 1-ranked team (Alabama) perched deep in the storied elite of the game?

This is the year MWC champion, Utah, had to beat two ranked teams within its own league to win a conference title. The ACC and Big East didn’t have to deal with that.

  109. Garret December 20, 2008 8:13 pm

We’ve always acknowledged that the bottom of the MWC is better than the WAC, but the top 3 of the MWC passed the top 3 of the WAC this year (especially if you include Fresno State in that top 3!).

The final 2008 BCS standings featured three MWC teams in the top 16, with Utah (12-0) ranked No. 6, TCU (10-2) No. 11 and BYU (10-2) at No. 16.

The MWC is one of three conferences with at least three teams ranked in the top 16 β€” the Big 12 has 4, and the SEC has 3.

In 2008, the Mountain West became the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to have three teams ranked in the final regular-season BCS standings. The MWC also is the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS league to have three teams ranked in the BCS standings all eight weeks of the poll.

The MWC went 6-1 against the Pac-10 this season, and its champ, Utah, now has the opportunity to get after Alabama, a team perched atop the polls most of the year.

With the hiring of Mike Locksley at UNM from Illinois, Brady Hoke at SDSU from Ball State and Dave Christensen of Missouri at Wyoming, it is expected those programs may take a step forward in seasons to come.

    wafan,

Just heard from #2 son that all flights out of PDX tomorrow are cancelled!

Is it on the news where you are?

  113. wafan December 20, 2008 8:36 pm

    d1 . . .

    Sorry to hear about #2.

A de-icer broke down at PDX. Used to help clear the runways. the other de-icer cannot keep up. Bad snow and ice everywhere at PDX. The wind has created lots of problems, too. The cross winds are the most problematic.

So far SEA is open with some delays. NWA and Haw’n have direct flights from SEA to HNL. 1st flight out is at 8a. Is there an Aeroporter van that he can catch from PDX to SEA? Might cost him some but at least he can get out if he can get a seat.

DId you suggest get a room earlier today?

Spokane is at -18 — that is minus 18 right now. dj must be freezing his okole.

Near whiteout conditions just north of Seattle.

Wind has not been a major problem in WA so far. Forecast is for high winds through noon in the area.

This is not good. The homeless have a hard enough time without the additional problems.

  114. wafan December 20, 2008 8:43 pm

WA high wind warning was just cancelled.

  115. d1ε³Ά December 20, 2008 8:45 pm

    wafan,

    Thanks for the 411.
Fortunately he is at someone’s home in Portland.
Holding on to that Tuesday ticket right now plus the now cancelled standby on HAL that was to leave tomorrow.
Looking at the highway cams, I don’t think I want him out tonight.
(Read that I-84 is closed by Troutdale.)
    We’ll see what’s happening tomorrow…

  116. wafan December 20, 2008 8:50 pm

    d1 . . .

If #2 can get out of SEA on Monday there is a way for him, tomorrow to get up to this area.

It is a long shot but it is an alternative.

Tomorrow the Seahawks play in Seattle. There is a Sounder train that leaves from Portland that will take Seahawk fans up to the King Street Station up in Seattle. About a $30 cab fare from that area to SEA is a possibility. Problem is that of housing.

If the Sounder stops at the Centennial Station in Olympia that is another solution. Have him get off at the Centennical Station. I can pick him up and get him to my place — hot shower, warm rooms, a couch on which to sleep, decent food, and a ride up to SEA via me or the Aeroporter Shuttle.

Of course, the trick is for him to be able to get a flight out of SEA.

Let me know what you both decide.

  117. Buffoman December 20, 2008 8:56 pm

As my wife and I walked through the mall today she happened to notice a picture of Colt Brennan in Pictures Plus. She remarked, That’s a nice picutre of him, he was truly a one of a kind person (not player, not athlete), person.”

We were season ticket holders for over 20 years and I never thought my wife was ever so engaged in a game as when Colt played. Take nothing away from Garret, Timmy, Rolo, Raphel or those folks. There was just something about that young man.

That started me thinking, and he’s not even from Hawaii! Yet, we do so embrace this person, cheer him on, wish him every bit of success and await for his triumphant return, win or loose back to Hawaii.

Was there ever a person or athlete in the last 4 deacdes, born and raised in Hawaii, staying home and playing for Hawaii who ever received so much love? Maybe the last one was Derek Tatsuno, but back then no one from the continent really sought him.

My point is, when will one of our own realize that we really do love our athletes and would really love to see the day when someone saw that being keiki o ka aina really meant something that went beyond the big name and lights of someone elses reputation.

  118. WarriorMojo December 20, 2008 8:58 pm

Holy cow, what an incredible odyssey for D1’s #2.

Wafan, I’m going to be back in Olympia (or Lacey) for work in early January. Is this weather typical of what I might expect?

  119. wafan December 20, 2008 9:02 pm

    WM . . .

    Nope. It is not typical.

Usually if we get any weather it is for a day or two and melts quickly. This year is very unusual with this Arctic Blast straight out of Canada.

Definitely want to bring a good jacket, though. It will probably be cool and wet!

Let me know when you will be in town as the time gets closer maybe we can get together for a dinner or three. HA!

OFF SPORTS TOPIC – OR MAYBE NOT

I don’t know if any of you have ever heard of a viral video which actually made it to prime time tv – well, at least to PBS – called The Last Lecture. I’d heard about it but never took the time to record it & then watch it couple of weeks ago.

Now I am not someone who proselytizes and tells people about The Chosen Way; however, I strongly urge that you take a couple of hours to watch the video or to read the book and then think about what Randy said that day and what impact it can have on your life.

On September 18, 2007, computer science professor Randy Pausch stepped in front of an audience of 400 people at Carnegie Mellon University to deliver a last lecture called β€œReally Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.”

BTW – his included playing in the NFL.That didn’t happen but the lessons learnd from being part of a team stayed with him forever.

With slides of his CT scans beaming out to the audience, Randy told his audience about the cancer that would claim his life in a matter of months. On the stage that day, Randy was youthful, energetic, handsome, often cheerfully, darkly funny. He seemed invincible. But this was a brief moment, as he himself acknowledged.

Randy’s lecture and the book he wrote based on the same principles celebrate the dreams we all strive to make realities come close to being true.

The lecture is NOT about dying. It is about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment because “time is all you have… and you may find one day that you have less than you think.” It is a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It is about living. .

  134. Garret December 20, 2008 9:51 pm

    brew808,

That is one reason why I just put all of the links in the website field. No need to worry about the length of the URL. NYUH asked one time why I use that field, but I just find it easier for me to not have to figure out if a URL is too long or not.

I post so many links that anything that saves time really helps! I know that tinyurl had a problem with one version of the blog software so I had to stop using that at that time…I never checked if it works now because the website field makes it not necessary.

Big photo of Tepa on the LA Times website in the article about the game. Unfortunately, the photo is of Tepa fumbling. Some mention of interest in the artcile…

Jackrabbits linebacker George Daily-Lyles gave Poly a 14-13 lead late in the third quarter when he scooped up a blocked punt and sprinted six yards for a touchdown.

Koniseti plunged into the end zone on the next play, and Grant threatened to take control of the game on its following drive. That’s when Devontae Butler fumbled inside the Poly 30, leading to a freak sequence. Jackrabbits lineman Iuta Tepa recovered the fumble only to lose it again, but teammate Juwuan Brown pounced on the ball at the Poly 35.

I remember when Momo cut off their financial support of Colorado State. They used to donate to both UH (Mrs. Momo went there) and Colorado State (they had a major that I don’t think UH had back then) until then.

I’m surprised that USC’s OL is stocked up like so many other teams. Moving one C to TE opens an opportunity for Abe.

USC will probably need to sign several offensive line recruits in February because center Michael Reardon is moving to tight end and freshman Matt Meyer’s career could be over because of recurring foot injuries.

The Trojans also are not going to re-sign offensive guard Daniel Campbell, who was unable to meet NCAA Clearinghouse requirements in August and went to a prep school.

“We lose four guys after next season so we’ll be down to the young guys,” offensive line coach Pat Ruel said Saturday.

The Trojans will lose left guard Jeff Byers, left tackle Charles Brown, right guard Alex Parsons and right tackle Nick Howell after the 2009 season.

So far, USC has received a verbal commitment from only one lineman, Kevin Graf of Agoura.

Sparano will continue using Davone Bess on punt returns because “Davone gives us the best chance in some of those situations.”

  150. brew808 December 20, 2008 10:26 pm

    …and… when it’s UT vs. Stanford…??? 😯 πŸ˜† πŸ™„

  151. Garret December 20, 2008 10:26 pm

More info on Bess…it is awesome that NFL greats respects him this much!

Bess has made such an impression that Rams receiver Torry Holt approached him after their game and said, ”You’re going to be something special.” Even ex-Dolphins legend Mark Duper inquired about Bess at a function last weekend, predicting “he’s going to be a great one.”

Bess has a peculiar habit: He said he’s so used to dodging cornerbacks that “when I see someone walk by me in supermarkets, I’ll walk the other way. People ask me why I do that.”

  152. Garret December 20, 2008 10:28 pm

As expected from previous articles, Miami’s coach made it pretty clear that they are in the process of moving Samson to guard. They are going to do it in limited stretches right now because Johnson is recovering from injury, but I think that Miami’s head coach (who used to be Johnson’s OL coach) has that in his long-term plan.

Sparano suggested that Al Johnson — who is five to 10 pounds heavier than Samson Satele — will get more work at center, with Satele likely shifting to guard at times. Satele could be in the mix at guard next season.

I showed my Mom the picture of Kekaula, and she said, “He looks so happy.” My reaction when I first saw that picture was, “There he goes again, clowning around.” πŸ˜€

  155. Ralph December 20, 2008 10:30 pm

D1 looks like your son will be spending this weekend in the pnw…lots of cancelled flights across the nation…if his flight is a connecting flt from chicago, denver, and kansas city it would be a long wait, to much ice and snow..

  156. Garret December 20, 2008 10:31 pm

    brew808,

Let me put it this way…I donated enough to scholarship programs at Texas (mainly the merit-based ones that I received when I went there) that I have a lifetime membership to their alumni association and they had a fundraiser schedule his flight to San Diego so that he could meet with me to discuss the new Dean of Engineering. I appreciate that those scholarships made it possible for me to go to college without being a huge burden on my parents.

On the other hand, I’ve never donated a single cent to Stanford.

  157. d1ε³Ά December 20, 2008 10:36 pm

    Appreciate wafan’s info and offer.
It’ll be a restless night as the flight schedules are updated.
It looks like the HAL flights to PDX got re-routed to Sacramento and San Jose. Gotta wait see when they’ll get in to PDX…

  158. Ralph December 20, 2008 10:40 pm

wow Kekaula graduated with honors, congratulations one more time!

  159. brew808 December 20, 2008 10:46 pm

Garret – Actually, I knew that. Either you told me that before, or you’ve told me “enough” for me to figure that out. Stanford was lucky to have you for your quick visit! It did give you some exposure to the Bay Area… πŸ˜€

  160. Garret December 20, 2008 11:01 pm

    brew808,

I don’t think I mentioned on the blog how I never donated to Stanford…but you probably figured everything out and I know you have a great memory.

I loved living in the Bay Area–though when I was a student I lived in East Palo Alto and the pizza guys wouldn’t come to my apartment because East Palo Alto was pretty scary then. It was a lot cheaper to live there!

Of the places I lived, I’d rank them like this:
    Kaneohe
    San Diego
    Bay Area
    Austin
    LA
    Albuquerque

Lori has San Diego first…and the job and school situation is better here, so we’re staying here. After Lori’s parents sell there home and move up here, we definitely won’t be moving…but they delayed that for a few years due to the housing market drop in Hawaii.

We have a long day tomorrow with friends at Legoland so I’d better go to sleep now.

  179. las vegas December 21, 2008 1:05 am

    Just 4 Garret,

‘Twas the nocturnal segment of the diurnal period preceding the annual
Yuletide celebration and throughout our place of residence, kinetic activity was not in evidence among the possessors of this potential, including that species of diminutive rodent known as Mus musculus. Hosiery was meticulously suspended from the forward edge of the wood-burning caloric apparatus, pursuant to our anticipatory pleasure regarding an imminent visitation from an eccentric philanthropist among whose folkloric appellations is the honorific title of St. Nick.
The prepubescent siblings, comfortably ensconced in their respective
accommodations of repose, were experiencing subconscious visual
hallucinations of variegated saccarinose fruit confections performing
choreography through their cerebrums. My conjugal partner and I, attired in our nocturnal head-coverings, were about to take slumberous advantage of the Arctic-like gloom when upon the avenaceous exterior portion of the grounds there ascended such a cacophony of dissonance that I felt compelled to arise with alacrity from my place of repose for the purpose of ascertaining the precise source thereof.

Hastening to the casement, I forthwith opened the barriers sealing this
fenestration, noting thereupon that the lunar brilliance without, reflecting
as it was upon the surface of a recent crystalline aqueous precipitation,
might be said to rival that of the solar meridian itself–thus permitting my
incredulous optical sensory organs to behold a miniature airborne runnered conveyance, drawn by an octet of diminutive specimens of the genus Rangifer, piloted by a miniscule, aged chauffeur so ebullient and nimble that it became instantly apparent to me that he was indeed our anticipated beatified caller.
With this ungulate motive power traveling at a greater vertiginous
velocity than patriotic alar predators, he vociferated loudly, expelled
breath musically through contracted labia, and addressed each of the octet by his or her cognomen: “Now Dasher, now Dancer,” et al, guiding them to the uppermost exterior level of our abode, through which structure I could readily distinguish the concatenations of each of the sum total of the thirty-two cloven pedal extremities.

As I retracted my cranium from its erstwhile location and was performing a pi radians pivot, our distinguished visitant achieved, with utmost celerity, via a downward salutation, entry by way of the ceramic smoke passage.
He was clad entirely in animal integuments, soiled by the ebony residue from partial oxidation of carboniferous fuels. His resemblance to a street
vendor I attributed to the plethora of assorted playthings which he bore
dorsally in a commodious cloth receptacle.
His orbs were scintillant with reflected luminosity, while his submaxillary dermal indentations gave every evidence of engaging amiability.
The capillaries of his malar regions and nasal appurtenances were engorged with crimson circulatory fluid which, its chroma suffusing the dermal layers, approximated the retinal sensation reflected by the Prunus avium, or sweet cherry.
His amusing sub- and supralabials resembled nothing so much as a flexible, curved strip of wood associated with the American aborigines and their ambient, hirsute, facial adornment had an absence of coloring comparable to crystalline frozen hydrogen oxide vapor.
Clenched firmly between his incisors was the
posterior projection of acalumet whose gray colloidal aerosol fumes, forming a tenuous ellipticaltorus about his occiput, were suggestive of a decorative seasonal circlet of holly.
His visage was wider than it was high, and when
he waxed mirthful, his corpulent abdominal region undulated in the manner of inpectinated fruit syrup in a colloidal gel state within a hemispherical container.
He was of Napoleonic stature, neither more nor less than an
obese, jocund, multigenarian gnome, the optical perception of whom rendered me visibly frolicsome despite every effort to refrain from being so affected by this risiblity. By rapidly lowering and then elevating one eyelid and rotating his head slightly eccentricly, he indicated that trepidation on my part was superfluous.
Without utterance, but with noticeable dispatch, he commenced filling the aforementioned appended hosiery with various of the
articles of merchandise extracted from his aforementioned previously
    dorsally transported cloth receptacle.

Upon completion of this task, he executed an abrupt pi radian rotation about
the vertical axis, placed a single manual digit in lateral juxtaposition to
his olfactory organ, inclined his cranium forward in a gesture of leave
taking, and effected his egress by salutation up the smoke passage through which he had made ingress. He then propelled himself in a short vector onto his rustic winter conveyance. Contracting his oral sphincter, he emitted a shrill series of notes to the antlered quadrupeds of burden and proceeded to soar aloft in a movement hitherto observed chiefly among the seed bearing portions of a common weed.
But I overheard his parting exclamation, audible immediately prior to his vehiculation beyond the limits of visibility:
“Ecstatic Yuletide to the planetary constituency, and to the selfsame
assemblage, my sincerest wishes for a salubriously beneficial and
gratifyingly pleasurable period between sunset and dawn.”

  180. Pride. December 21, 2008 1:38 am

    Thanks Las Vegas.

Does the fact that I understood all of that make me a “dweeb”? Apologies to Garret of course.

  181. Asa December 21, 2008 2:17 am

Capitol -ist/WassupDoc referred to Randy Pausch’s last lecture video. It can be seen on YouTube at

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo
Randy Pausch Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams

It’s about the world view of a very practical man in academia. I like his story about applying to Brown University out of high school, only to be wait listed. He wasn’t satisfied with waiting it out and just hoping for the best; he called the admissions office every day to inquire if his status had changed. He was eventually admitted to Brown. He half joked that the Brown people likely got tired of his persistence and let him in to stop the incessant phone calls. I can appreciate his determination as I died on two wait lists in my day, never having thought of checking on my progress (or lack of progress). As he said, brick walls exist to separate those who are truly determined from those who aren’t.

If you haven’t already seen the video (or read his book, for that matter), do so; it’s time well spent.

  182. Ralph December 21, 2008 2:22 am

Las Vegas you just put a halt to the bloggers-everyone is reading and rereading your post trying to interpret what you eloquently wrote…unfortunately, only pride has figured it out and the rest of us are searching the dictionary to understand what you wrote…the only statement that would be more difficult would be the same statement written in the kings pidgin of BigHilo2.

Pride is my local hero. The more I thought about it, through the haze of yesteryear, I do remember him playing UH. I didn’t know him then, and I forgot all about him for a long while, but I’ve come to know him as a Tsaiko this past season and reading his stuff here on the blog and listening to him recall why he stayed home,

I tell you, PRIDE, you da guy I’d like the great local kids to emulate! Adds a smile to my being a part of Warrior Nation.

And I think about Geordon and Paipai and da oddaz staying home,
I can honestly say that these kids make me proud I’m a Hawaiian and I am SUPER PROUD that they want to play for Hawaii.

Well, #2 son is somewhere at PDX by now. Hopefully he makes it on HA25 that is now showing a 3-4 hr delay. That would actually put him a little ahead of original ETA so this could still work out.

D-1 ~ Wish there was some way we could get #2 son put on a Military Space ‘A’ flight out of McChord AFB near where wafan resides. They are dispatched almost routinely out of there on a daily basis.

Maybe wafan can dress him in his old *JPO* uniform and pass him off as a “Mission Essential” operative to assist the Secret Service in guarding Obama.

I do think it’s OK to remind players to keep their heads in the game when they commit bone-headed penalties though. Like Malcolm “Slash” Lane from time to time (don’t get me wrong, he’s a good player, wants it badder, and has a shot to really shine next year).
