It”s the Sunday of a bye weekend, but several Warriors, led by co-captains Richard Torres and Bryant Moniz, are working out on their own today.
As Moniz said earlier this week: Sunday is “the best time to work out … because in my mind, my opponent is not working out on Sundays. I’m trying to get better than him.”

All that gloom and doom regarding the Big East, Air Force, and MWC… UH better be firm in their negotiations with the MWC. Seems to me, they need UH more than ever.
It is great to hear that the Warrior leaders are working out today…their hard work will pay off on the field this season.
Boston College’s AD says that ESPN “told them what to do” when they added Syracuse and Pitt. Interesting timeline–ESPN offers over $1 bil to the Big East to extend their TV rights…the Big East says no since they want NBC/Comcast and Fox to bid…ESPN tells the ACC to add 2 Big East teams.

I noted that ST and others said that Texas should have learned to share to prevent the other schools from leaving the Big 12. The *facts* seem to dispute that.
1. Nebraska earned the most money under the Big 12 revenue sharing rules when the conference was formed, not Texas. After Nebraska started to be shown less on TV after 3-4 years in the Big 12, Oklahoma took over the #1 TV revenue spot, not Texas.
2. Nebraska tried to create their own network first, starting 2 years before Texas. Their AD talked about that publicly 5 years ago.
3. When Nebraska left, Texas and the rest of the Big 12 made revenue sharing MUCH more equal.
4. When the Big 12 got their $1.2 bil deal from Fox (for the games ESPN doesn’t show), Texas and the rest of the Big 12 decided last year that the $1.2 bil would be shared *equally*.
5. ESPN and Fox show more Texas games, which means that Texas doesn’t have the right to sell many games to a third party. That is why *Kansas* made more from 3rd tier TV rights than Texas before the Longhorn Network started.
6. Texas and Texas A&M both publicly acknowledged that Texas approached Texas A&M to try to get a joint TV network, with the money split equally. Texas A&M’s AD said that he rejected the deal and Texas’ AD confirmed that. Texas A&M’s AD said less than 2 years ago that *A&M* was ahead of Texas in setting up a network and A&M would get a network set up before Texas…so it appears they rejected the deal with Texas because A&M didn’t want to share.
7. Having Texas share their 3rd tier rights would be the exact same thing as having UH share its PPV money with other WAC schools. Texas is making money on the games that the national TV partners don’t show, just like UH. UH made $3 mil from TV in some years when other WAC schools made $200k. Texas made 10% to 20% more from conference TV revenue (and was one of the reasons schools like Iowa State and Kansas State cashed huge checks) while UH made 1500% some other WAC schools.
I’ve pointed out before that if the “sharing” movement gains steam, *UH* is the one that is going to be lose the most money.
UH moved up in the rankings during the bye week. UH is #39 in the coaches poll since one coach voted for UH this week.

By the way, Tulane is #169 and their coaches are either selling their homes or have month-to-month leases on apartments…not a great situation for their team. I hope that they at least enjoy their trip to Hawaii even though UH will beat them by a huge number of points.

When you look at the recruiting picture, the WAC schools are really doing poorly against the other conferences. Most of the AQ schools have over a dozen recruits while Hawaii shows only one 2012 recruit.

Looking at madeinhawaii’s link, I think those are the schools outside of the AQ conferences (or Notre Dame). TCU recruited those players after they had accepted the Big East invite so I don’t count them as a non-AQ school for recruiting purposes.
After the loss to Washington, computer rankings and such mean little to the Warriors.
The Warriors’ goals are to qualify for the Hawaii Bowl, win the WAC, and beat SMU.

But like I’ve said before, one way or another, make a decision on the head coach.

Perhaps the lopsideness can be partially traced to the “lower” ranked WAC teams played the “big boys” and lost and the “big boys” played the other “lower” tier non-AQ teams and won.
Would have been great if USU and the other WAC schools won their games against the BCS schools. At least UH is 1 – 1 against BCS schools.
Conversely, some “lower ranked” schools beat the BCS teams. Perhpas, we are beginning to see a greater parity in college football.
Cetainly would have improved the WAC’s 6 -23 record.
I’d hate to see all that hard work putting together a program with depth and balance get shot because of some paperwork.
In the end, all these delays could cost UH a lot more in the seasons to come than what they will pay McMackin over his entire contract.

UH is like a pro player. The money it makes early has to last a long time.
The big earnings, for the athletic department, are coming from football (through ticket revenue, TV, etc.). UH isn’t going to make the big bucks in basketball or baseball. It might turn a profit in those sports and get some nice change, but not the big bucks.

What you have to factor in is what are the recruiting budgets of UH and the WAC schools compared to those AQ schools over the last 2 or 3 years. My guess is that the AQ schools are spending 4-12 times (or even more) more on their budgets compared to their non-AQ counterparts. To my mind, UH among others is a vast OVER-achiever. They’re making a little go a long way. If UH had an SEC or Big-10 or even PAC-10 Budget, do you really think that recruiting would not be light years better?

I agree with ST that leaving Mack in this contract situation is horrible for UH’s recruiting. Upper Campus has basically decided that it is fine if they don’t make a decision now, not caring that their decision has written off an entire recruiting class for UH.
The recruiting budget situation for UH hasn’t changed since last year. The difference between commits now and last year can be traced largely to the uncertainty about Mack’s situation at UH. Every school recruiting against UH must be using Mack’s contract against UH…and every recruit and their parents will want to know if the head coach will be at a school that they choose.
UH’s recruiting budget isn’t tiny anymore, thanks to JD. The articles that came out last year had the recruiting budget at $120k, which may not even be counting the Hawaiian Airlines free flights (if any are left) and does not take into account the expense of a recruiting coordinator. UH’s recruiting budget is bigger than many other non-AQ schools, but UH has to spend more money for recruiting because travel to/from the mainland makes UH spend so much more for recruiting than other schools.
If Boise leaves the MWC along with Airforce… and the MWC needs to extend membership to Idaho and Utah State, it would be like the old WAC with the addition of UNLV, Colorado State and Wyoming. I would desperately try to negotiate NOT having to pay subsidies to Fresno, Nevada, Utah State, and Idaho. There will be more existing WAC schools than MWC schools.

If Air Force moves its non-football teams from the MWC, which seems certain (football-only to the Big East or MWC), then the MWC will only have 5 baseball schools and some of the other nonrevenue sports might have trouble getting enough teams together. Yes, the WAC is trying to get all of Boise State’s and Air Force’s non-football teams. Neither BSU or AF are great in the other sports, but they have some competitive teams and the WAC seems to want to gather non-football affiliates. Hurting the MWC is probably some of Benson’s motivation. I’m sure that Benson wants to help BSU also, he was always on their side on thigns.
Trivia: Air Force won the MWC’s regular-season men’s basketball title more recently than UNLV.
The way things are turning out… CUSA might have the upper hand in the MWC-CUSA merger talks.
If Air Force’s non-football sports leave the MWC and the MWC is short a team (i.e., baseball per Garret) might that precipitate an invitation to UH to be a full conference member?
If that happens it really will be as I said earlier today — the old WAC.
I hope the intelligent folks at upper campus who seem to be running the sports department are sharp enough and quick enough to renegotiate the pay-to-play cash.
Would the MWC be more beneficial for our other sports than the Big West? Particularly if the Big West is able to secure a bid to the post conference games in Men’s Volleyball?
I think the only way that happens is if travel subsidies are floored.

If the MWC wants UH for all sports, they have to eliminate the travel subsidies completely! If the MWC was negotiating with UH now for a football-only membership, UH would be able to eliminate the travel subsidies because the MWC would be desperate. Last year the situation was different, as it looked like the WAC would be dead (and the WAC’s football situation might be even worse soon) and the MWC had attractive teams and a strong AQ chance.
I would prefer UH to be a full MWC member if the travel subsidy was completely gone over this arrangement where UH pays full travel subsidies to both the MWC and Big West. But the MWC schools really wanted that travel subsidy and UH has a signed contract now.
You know what is really sad? UH has its football team spend a week in Vegas, missing an entire week of classes, because they say they couldn’t find a commercial flight to get them home from Seattle after the U-Dub game and then get them to Vegas for the UNLV game. If UH could have afforded a charter flight, the Warriors would have avoided missing all of those classes, would have been able to sleep in their beds and have a regular week of practice with a scout team, and may have won the UNLV game. UH cannot afford to pay for a charter flight for the Warriors…but UH will pay for charter flights for all MWC teams to come to Hawaii.
UH started as a 6.5 point favorite over SJSU and the line is already up to 7.

I got to agree with you on that one regarding charted flights for MWC schools but none for our own team between two road games when no commercial flight will do. Sad, really. A 4-1 team going into this Friday’s game would have so much more weight than a 3-2 team. Fans would be so much more excited early on in the season, as well.
Big West is more favorable for:
1) Rainbow Wahine volleyball and softball
-recruiting pipeline for both in the state of California and the Big West provides multiple bids to the NCAAs for softball and for Wahine volleyball the competition level alone is better off.
2) Baseball
-same reasons as for softball and women’s volleyball for both recruiting pipeline and the competition level is FAR superior in the Big West baseball scene.
Plus for all those sports, even sports like tennis and cross country the travel budget won’t get hit as much.
So for the majority of non-football sports, the Big West is a FAR better choice.

I feel like we know everything there is to know about Texas, Texas A&M, Boise, Air Force, BYU, the MWC, The Big 12, the Big East, the CUSA, all of their TV deals, their AQ status, the food each player eats for breakfast and the viscosity of their crap in the afternoon.
And yet strangely, no one here has the slightest clue about our next opponent.
Anyone have the latest information on the Spartans?
Or are they simply unsearchable through Google Reader? Or are we too arrogant or ignorant to even bother?

Spartans had a somewhat lackluster game against BYU this past weekend losing 29-16. Their top RB, Brandon Rutley, didn’t play in the game due to a sprained ankle he sustained the week before.
SJSU beat BYU in the air, 255 to 219, but lost sorely on the ground 224 to 70. Both sides gave up two interceptions. Oddly, I think SJSU also won the turn over battle 3-2… but they simply could not punch it in from the Red zone and had to settle for Field Goals.
SJSU had 3 FGs and 1 TD
BYU had 3 FGs and 3 TDs
Hawaii has to focus on fundamentals and find ways to keep themselves motivated to not fall into a “trap” game mentality.

I remember being favored over SJST at Aloha a few years ago and Tomey came in with the Spartans and they spanked us.
Forget the point spread and the stats, the boys got to work hard like Moniz and a few others are doing today and keep on working to win all three phases on the field this Friday.
I think Garret pointed out earlier that Hawaii was a 6.5-7 point favorite in this game. With the game the Warriors had against La Tech, had Hawaii not lost to UNLV, I believe it would easily be a 14-21 point favorite this week.

1) After Nevada beat UNLV 37-0, it’s is even more puzzling that Hawaii lost to UNLV by 20 points. UNLV has won only 1 game and even lost to Southern Utah in blow out fashion. Quite astonishing.
2) How bout them Niners, 48-3 over the division leading Tampa Bay Bucs. I believe in Jim Harbaugh in his coaching and his leadership. Things are looking up….for now. Next week, tough game at Detroit who have been very good, especially at home. They should easily beat DA Bears tomorrow.
3) Had a feeling the Raiders would win today. Just fate after the BOSS passed away yesterday.
4) Top Ranked teams roll: LSU, Bama, Oklahoma, Boise St., Stanford, and Clemson all dominated.

6) WAC Dangerous teams – Utah St. and Nevada. Utah St. have played everybody tough. UH will have to be very careful, even at home. Nevada playing at home on Nov. 19 at night against UH. It will be 40 degrees or below. Not an easy game for sure. This week’s game at San Jose should be very interesting. San Jose St. have been very competitive and have been blown out by only Stanford, which is understandable. They only lost to UCLA by 10 in LA and lost at BYU yesterday by 10 also. So, UH will have to have their A game and will be focused. To me, this is a very key game in the schedule.
7) IMHO, Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in the NFL right now. He has been, the last 10 games, including last year. He’s better than Brady, better than Brees, better than Rivers, better than Roethlisberger, definitely better than Romo who is not even in the top 12.
