“Zero” chance

SYDNEY — While the Warriors departed for Honolulu five hours after the end of yesterday’s game, the Golden Bears, with a bye next weekend, were able to enjoy an extra night in Australia.

And that was a good thing for Hawaii.

Huh?

In past years, UH opponents have griped about the difficulty in playing the week following a game in Hawaii. Traveling eastward, it has been noted, causes a loss of preparation time for the next game.

That argument then was used in creating a newly enacted Hawaii exemption. Any team with Hawaii on the schedule can start the season a week earlier. That earlier date has been dubbed Week Zero.

Now teams can play in Week Zero and have a bye the following week. And if that opposing team plays in Hawaii in Week Zero, it also gets to play a 13th regular season as part of the initial Hawaii exemption.

Hawaii and California played yesterday’s game as part of the international exemption. But the concept is the same as the new Week Zero exemption.

    Firstestest!

  2. Da Punchbowl Kid August 27, 2016 11:39 am

‘Twould be nice if the Warriors had a week off too.

  3. rodney August 27, 2016 11:44 am

lets do better to hide the blitz
    maybe try more 3-4
    lets get the next game
    go bows

  4. kev-1 August 27, 2016 11:49 am

Kinda funny that all of these concessions are made for UH opponents, but UH gets no concessions for any of their travel requirements. It is what it is, I guess.

The way the team played yesterday shows promise for conference play. Next week, not so much.

  5. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 11:54 am

so the week zero thing was it started for uh just this year?

  6. Ipu Man August 27, 2016 12:12 pm

Let Saint Just rest for conference and start Paul Harris
at running back. And maybe rest Ikaika, too, and try
one of the other qbs. And on defense, bring back the
    naughty boys…

  7. z August 27, 2016 12:20 pm

Time to get ready for money game. Focus needs to be on coming back healthy. Can’t afford to have a naughty boy on the traveling squad.

  8. madeinhawaii August 27, 2016 12:21 pm

I hope those who made the trip had a great experience. I enjoyed watching the game at home. Saw a lot of areas of improvement and areas that still needed improvement. Hope Rasmussen and Mayo aren’t badly banged up. Hope none of the Warriors are.

Wishing everyone a safe trip home.

  9. justsomeguy August 27, 2016 12:39 pm

There were some mistakes last night for sure but all in all I think the team looked better in all three phases. Those crying “this is just like chow”…..you and I were clearly not watching the same game. That offense was worlds away from Chows. Different blocking schemes, wayyyyy more deep routes, and a decent mix in the run game.

Imua Warriors. I have faith in you boys.

  10. Boya_jr August 27, 2016 12:44 pm

I enjoyed watching the Warriors play. Keep improving but looks like we should have an exciting season.

  11. madeinhawaii August 27, 2016 12:49 pm

When was the last time that our Offensive line gave up ZERO sacks?

  12. Maddog50 August 27, 2016 12:53 pm

Vast improvement-shortcomings can be addressed. Coach already said the suspended players will be back for Michigan. I hope that’s enough of that nonsense. Coach Rolovich can be a great guy to play for but business time is no nonsense time. That’s the even handed fair commitment he is looking for-Go Warriors!

  13. Akamai Okole August 27, 2016 12:57 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    Welcome home, Warriors.

    Eh…Get Chance! 😉

  14. Stephen Tsai August 27, 2016 2:00 pm

No sacks and two offensive penalties (one for delay of game, one for holding). That leaping rule is interesting. If you can’t get around the shield and it’s illegal to jump over it, sheesh, might as well yell “punt freeze.”

  15. Willie August 27, 2016 2:05 pm

The O-line looks much improved, solid play from what I saw, way better than last year. Also the running backs & game, receivers & passing game and play calling so much better than the predictable “chow regime”. Don’t think Woosley is the answer, his accuracy and touch still lacking; interception to TD ratio remains deficient.

On D, they played hard to the end! I see a lot of positives and optimism on this side of the ball over the prior season.

  16. Mr. Phillip Eeno August 27, 2016 2:11 pm

Lots of positive to build on. I’m definitely excited to see how much they’ll improve at the end of the year.

  17. Mr. Phillip Eeno August 27, 2016 2:12 pm

Hey, I’m no longer “awaiting moderation”

  18. Inyoface August 27, 2016 2:25 pm

Everyone’s talking about lack of tackles by the defense but I feel for them. A few times in the game after hard battles, right when they sat down they had to go right back onto the field. That’s disheartening.

  19. Arcumfortis August 27, 2016 2:28 pm

When you think of the unrelenting punishment our QB’s took during the last four years it is remarkable that there were no sacks (especially against a team like Cal). This bodes well. It does feel like we need a couple of recruiting classes to shore up the depth on our defensive front. But I guess it is predictable that we would be in this position. I remember post after post (at the beginning of year three and four of the dark years) wondering when we would hear of D-lineman being signed. But we didn’t hear much, so here we are with no depth. I give props to the guys who are out there and hope they stay healthy. With so little in the way of a pass rush we will be in trouble against any team with an effective passing game. I just hope we can keep our morale high until we start playing against more evenly matched teams. Losing can be a habit that is hard to break.

  20. Willie August 27, 2016 2:35 pm

That’s going to be a physically and mentally draining road trip next week to the Big House for the team. Traveling is so hard, now having gone West down under and now all the way out East, yikes. Hoping they stay healthy, small improvements are better than none. Go Bows/Warriors!

  21. Inyoface August 27, 2016 2:38 pm

I hope the pac12 looks into that leaping penalty to see if it was valid. I’ve seen guys jump up all the time from that area and no calls were ever made about it.

  22. whitey August 27, 2016 3:05 pm

Even tho the warriors lost, they still deserve kudos for a good game. I like their spirit. Yes, tackling is still a problem and maybe they should emphasize that they are playing tackle football and not touch. I am not any kind of football coach, but I firmly believe that when you practice or scrimmage, you make it like game time. To get to game speed, you need to practice some days at game speed. You may or may not have injuries the , but the players know if you not in shape for practice, you going get your okole kicked and probably get injured.

  23. H-Man August 27, 2016 3:10 pm

Been thinking about this “no leaping” rule and I’ve concluded the rule is to protect the blocking player from getting kicked in the face/head. So it makes sense. And I am on the bandwagon. While it wasn’t the best performance with the penalties, turnovers and miss-tackles, there were a lot of positives to take away to build on.

  24. Stephen Tsai August 27, 2016 3:46 pm

Give Leo Koloamatangi a lot of credit. He started at center after moving there two weeks ago.

  25. z August 27, 2016 3:50 pm

I think players should know the rules. All about details. D player mentioned after the game that they need to wrap up. Time to stop saying and doing. Should be new mantra.

    Come on Warriors.

Time to stop saying. Time to do it.

  26. letsgowarriors August 27, 2016 3:51 pm

    So who’s that hanapaa?

  27. AllG August 27, 2016 4:10 pm

Offense did a pretty decent job. O-Line and RBs played great! We should probably go to the 4 wide because D. Torres is a non- factor in the passing game. Would rather see K Chung out there at least we know he can block. We need to get Makoa Camanse-Stevens more PT he is a difference maker. Woolsey was very average, better then the last few years, but he is not the game changer we need to be competitive against power conference teams. Would have liked to see some other QBs get work once the game was out of reach.
Liked I’ve mentioned quite a few times we have failed to recruit DTs and are D Line is undersized with no depth. We will struggle to stop the run. We should probably give some of the freshmen safeties a shot. No dissrespect to Packer but he does not have the foot speed to play the position at a D1 level.

  28. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 4:36 pm

well lets welcome home the warriors and showcase the next.

  29. Jimmy O August 27, 2016 5:27 pm

Snaps were slow floaters and off target at times. A crisp on target snap will help the QB with being able to look down field quicker instead of waiting for the slower snap or tracking down an off target snap which also affects the timing of the play. Shotgun suppose to help QB with quicker reads and quicker set up of their feet therefore quicker release of ball. We should be using the extra seconds gained from the QB in shotgun as an advantage vs under center snap, drop back squence. Im sure Leo will get better with more practice but over all it was much improved OL play.

  30. Luki August 27, 2016 5:34 pm

I know it’s one game but much improved from last year. Felt like our O-Line really took it to the Cal front 7, knocked some people around. Missing Lewis, Tulimasealii, and Garcia-Williams hurt. Lack of depth at D-Line showed in the 2nd half.

  31. Naks8 August 27, 2016 7:44 pm

Guys got to clean up the dumb penalties. I know everyone said they looked way better than last year, but… Every year they start the year off playing a decent game. They played usc/uw/Wisconsin/etc tough in the past few years. Then lack of depth caught up to them. if they can stay healthy, wrap up and stop making dumb penalties then we can be successful this year. Also, if woosley was a freshman then I’d give him a pass for being so inaccurate. But he’s a senior. Time to see what someone else can do because 50% or below doesn’t cut it when the line gives him time and running backs keep the d honest

  32. hilosupaman August 27, 2016 8:45 pm

Wonder who was the late pick up Coach Rolo talked about on twitter?

I think Ikaika is going to be fine… new system, new line (who did great), and probably has some confidence issues. Partially cause he was always under duress on every snap and a lot of naysayers.

As everyone else mentioned there are improvements to be made but I think get chance play on Christmas!

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  33. SteveM August 27, 2016 9:32 pm

    Home again too.
Didn’t know the week early Hawaii “Week Zero” exemption was passed. Cool. 🙂

I was disappointed in the game outcome, but not the score…we got some fire power. A targeting solution on Michigan nears…

  34. NotNasti August 27, 2016 10:12 pm

I saw John Wa’a in the game, as well as Leo Koloamatangi. What happened to Asotuli Eli? Scratched for the game? Injury?

  35. z August 27, 2016 10:17 pm

So important for team to do well on zero week. So many eyes will be watching.

  36. clyde August 27, 2016 11:07 pm

NotNasti: Leo started at C, Eli at RG, Wa’a at LG (replacing Tupai).

  37. Aussie lad August 28, 2016 1:34 am

My family enjoyed our day out at the football watching the Warriors play, shame about the result. Hope you can all come back to Sydney to play again one day.

  38. NYUHTXSK August 28, 2016 2:11 am

Looking forward to all aspects of team functioning smoothly next week and all the players having fun and staying healthy.

  39. Maddog50 August 28, 2016 3:37 am

Leo K along with his fellow OL did a great job. That is probably overall one of the better personnel groupings they will face. Again looking back, turnovers and breakdowns on about 7-8 plays made all the difference. I actually believe that the task ahead is not much larger than the one faced last year at OSU and WI-the difference is we will score points. So provided we are not overly drained by the travel aspect I expect a great effort and good game! Go Warriors-by the way with Lewis Unga JGW will help and I noticed Peni # 8 did not play a down either injured sick or got beat out-either way I think he can be productive during the game.

  40. Tempmanoa August 28, 2016 6:02 am

I thought Woolsey played well and made some nice throws he threw for 70% first quarter and 50% there after, made 11 first downs passing to keep drives going. Receivers still letting balls drop or go through their hands. Kemp still needs to work to reach for the ball and trap it in his hands– he waits for the ball to come to his body which lets DBs reach the ball first and knock it away. He cradles the ball instead of trapping the ball so he is always juggling it. I watched a coach telling him and other receivers to extend, trap ball securely in hands, then bring to body. lots of potential shown running and passing– stats show equal production.

  41. Obake-san August 28, 2016 6:09 am

Except for some missed tackles and penalties at the wrong time, I thought the Warriors had a chance to win. The offense looked a lot better than the last few years. The defense needs to settle down and come under control when trying to make tackles and they need to wrap up when tackling.

As long as the team keeps improving each game, I see good things happening. Like DR mentioned in his article, even June Jones lost his 1st game (62-7) to USC.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  42. Inyoface August 28, 2016 7:22 am

So Penitito didn’t play? I thought he wasn’t in there but wasn’t sure.

  43. Musicman August 28, 2016 8:05 am

Much improved UH Football Team! I watched on ESPN in Los Angeles. Except for a few penalties and turnovers the last few minutes of the 2nd quarter, Hawaii looked pretty good. St Just and Lakalaka looked like beasts running the ball and the OL did a great job blocking. The D Line was also improved but did lack depth as they tired in the 2nd half….. hence poor tackling. Linebackers, CB and DB need to be more aggressive without penalties. I look for improvement every game as the season unfolds, even little ones? They add up and the team will go bowling again.

  44. H-Man August 28, 2016 8:09 am

The good news is our O-line and running game is really good. But our QB is a 50% passing QB in games. In practice he is a 60%+ passer and can effectively throw the long ball. Maybe our secondary not that great.

  45. Musicman August 28, 2016 8:13 am

That onside kick at the start of the game caught me and I guess everyone by surprise. If it’s executed right and UH recovers its a great call If it go’s the other way, everyone shakes their head……NO, NO, No. Looks to be an exciting season and I’m looking forward to seeing UH play Nevada in October “LIVE at the Stadium” as I’m flying home to visit family for a week. So Excited!!!!!!!

  47. Poliandri August 28, 2016 9:46 am

This is what Michigan Fans think about Hawaii”s chances.

Coach Rolo: POST this in the locker room..

Poor Hawaii. Like their rb but they are in for a major beating. They have no shot whatsoever. I was watching a little of the game…here is what I say..

    1. Defense is small. UM doesn’t have any big game breakers so they are just going to maul their DL and I predict they run the ball 50 times in the game. Poor Hawaii..they are going to need to have 10 guys in the box. This is going to be some version of Wisconsin vs. UM/RR era. I may have to turn the channel off during the game because of pity.

I think UM gets to play a lot of young guys late in the 1st half. UM could win 100-3 if it really wanted to. Spread should be more like 42 pts. We are going to see the entire team play which is good.

  48. Dano August 28, 2016 10:24 am

Rather than playing top tier Big 10 teams like Ohio St and Michigan always on their turf, i would like to see us play the lower to middle tier teams like Indiana, Purdue, ideally getting a home and home deal. during JJ’s era, we did play Purdue, Michigan State, Northwestern at home and beat all three.

  49. NotNasti August 28, 2016 10:37 am

Clyde: Thanks for the info on Eli. I was unable to catch the start of the game and missed the line up intros.

  50. islandman August 28, 2016 10:50 am

Michigan St, after losing to Hawaii in 2004, didn’t ever want to come back, though they had a different coach than now.

  51. H-Man August 28, 2016 10:57 am

Let’s see, looking at UH’s football schedule up to 2025, I would say there are the kind of home-and-home series that you are suggesting. This year UMass comes to Aloha Stadium and next year we go to Amherst. This year we play Arizona at Tuscon, but they come to Aloha Stadium in 2019 and 2025. We go back to Tuscon in 2020. Oregon St comes to Aloha Stadium in 2019 and we go to Corvallis in 2021, There’s also home-and-home series with Army, Wisconsin and BYU.

  52. Not an Expert August 28, 2016 11:08 am

Ikaika’s throwing of the football is not an easy catch. For some reason the trajectory and velocity of his throws creates the problem of accuracy and drop balls.

His calculation to trajectory and velocity needs big improvement. A reason why the longer the throw the less chance of success.

  53. kev-1 August 28, 2016 11:25 am

So I read where two of the three players that were suspended for the Cal game never even left Honolulu. How did we not find out about that until game day? Or did I miss it being reported leading up to the game?

  54. islandman August 28, 2016 11:56 am

    news embargo.

  55. Inyoface August 28, 2016 12:12 pm

It’s weird that all 3 California teams in the MWC is either played at home or in Cali each season. Would be nice to have at least one game in Cali every year.

  56. slenzi August 28, 2016 12:15 pm

Watched the game on ESPN3. There is a whole lot of good stuff going on. Unfortunately there was some ready-fire-aim going on too. If Cal was a true “good test” then UH will have a great season, because all mistakes are coachable and fixable in short order. Warrior football is moving on up #priderock.
