With a bowl a lock, time to restock

The UH coaches had little time to celebrate last night’s victory and presumptive bowl berth.

The NCAA’s so-called contact period for recruiting began today. One UH coach is scheduled to depart this afternoon for international recruiting, and others will leave following tonight’s team banquet.

The contact period, which allows home visits, runs through Dec. 11.

  3. al November 27, 2016 11:16 am

How about our “up the middle” offense!

It gained 200+ yards on the ground (including negative yards from some sacks).
Averaging 5 yds per carry. 9 yards per by the top RB.
The stacking of the middle opened for 300 yds passing and 4 tds.

We get to a bowl game, first in 5 years.

Now what you guys going monku monku about?

  4. al November 27, 2016 11:17 am

    I was there.

great win for the team, program, and State!

now, it’s time to start evaluating and create options for 2016 – same staff? different responsibilities? with 10 players graduating in December, what are the early signing prospects for transfers or JC players?

surely, there must be system in place for the selfish “personal foul” penalties – maybe a tiered system such as 1st foul, sit on the bench for the quarter or half; 2nd foul in the same season – automatic suspension for current game and the next game and if away, player stays home; if 2 personal fouls in the same game a two game suspension [ current rule is automatic ejection for 2nd personal foul in same game ] — player committing the foul may be the best player , but he must learn consequences for all his actions – a life learning experience — next man in!

  7. A-House November 27, 2016 11:28 am

    al:

you have a good point, but this was one game — what about the other 9 games when it was not as productive?

monkuing is not a “bad” trait for do we not “grumble” about many, many things including what our wives or children or co-workers or friends do or do not do?

  10. The Flying O November 27, 2016 11:49 am

Why would anyone think that it’s necessary to shake up the coaching staff after a only one season where the team won six games (more than norm chow won in two years) with norm chow recruits? Because some people think we run up the middle too much? That’s idiotic.

  11. winning November 27, 2016 11:51 am

Somebody from UH must have read my last post. UMass was waiting for Laka and he was used as a decoy many times (should have done it with Nmex). Yes that did open up the passing especially since their DB’s were under 6 ft. Also, I believe Kemp was also used as a decoy. Mr. Tsai was correct to give the edge to UH on D. The O was reminiscent of days gone by, Things are looking up in Manoa. Matter of fact, next years crop of QB’s will really be nice to see. Our man Dru has to work even harder (still carries the ball like a hot malasada). Go Warriors- Win on X-mas eve!

  12. burro sabio November 27, 2016 11:53 am

Mr. A-House, sorry but I will never understand your thought. Not every offensive play works 100% of the time. If you stop running up the middle, you can’t run a read-option play or sell a play-action pass. Since long passes don’t work 100% of the time, should Smith stop calling long passes? Should we stop running the wildcat since it didn’t work last night? Stop running the occasional jet sweep? Why would you limit the offense even more that it already is? Might as well punt on 1st down.

You’re a colonel. If you line up 6 divisions up front, the enemy has to commit 7 or 8 divisions to counter your attack which leaves only 3 or 4 divisions to watch the rest of the battlefront or to counter your air assault. Look at it from the defensive standpoint, if the enemy keeps attacking the same area you have to commit several division to defend it or they will break through the front. If you don’t run up the middle, Rolo might as well go on the PA and announce “we’re not going to run up the middle so you don’t have to defend it”. Isn’t that treasonous?

    Sorry, nuff already

  13. winning November 27, 2016 12:01 pm

Run 100 yd windsprints for PF penalties. How about 3- 100 yd sprints per PF, and if coaches feel like your slacking, you gotta run more. My Pop Warner coach did that to us many times including slacking off during practices. Heh Heh! Now that should grab a player’s attention.

Rolovich: Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year

  15. NorthShoreFan November 27, 2016 12:20 pm

    Aloha Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
    #13…I ditto dat!

Coach Rolo has done a great job turning the team attitude around. Building a winning culture at Manoa.
Hoping recruits can see the rebuilding and want to be a part of it.

MAHALO to the Seniors! It was a season with many hills to climb but you led the way.
Good to see a lot of freshmen making their mark. Coach Rolo brought in some great kids and hoping for more!
Restock the cupboards and IMUA WARRIORS!

  16. kama krab November 27, 2016 12:28 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Ho man what a game. Great win braddah Rolo and the boys.
Congrats to the Seniors. You guys deserve this after the disaster called Chow.

With all the young talent on the field we have seen, this program is definitely on the rise. Unlike JJs first year where he did it with a mostly Senior group, Rolo has done it with a very young roster which should bode well for next year and going forward.

Mahalo Much boys and coaches. See you all Christmas Eve.

  17. Derek November 27, 2016 12:56 pm

All I want for Xmas are recruits who are talented and have speed. We need to address the defensive side of the ball first, stop the run better, pass rushers, and get playmakers. I was so shocked to see Sanchez miss the extra point that it could cost us the game. Thankfully it did not. Who’s going to be the kicker next year? And snapper? And holder? Is Rolo going to sign at least one QB, maybe 2. What about RB since we lose Harris and Lakalaka?

And the unacceptable penalties that hurt the team. Penalties are the result of discipline, intelligence, and concentration. Do you see service acadamies commit a lot of penalties? No. Why? Because they do the 3 things mentioned very well. UH coaches need to teach and show how penalties can be prevented with better techniques.

    13.

I think it’s going to happen.

    Wyoming lost.
    San Diego State lost.
    Boise State lost.

It’s between Coach Rolovich and Craig Bohl, I think.

  19. whitey November 27, 2016 2:12 pm

Macadang umaga tsaikos. Middle Tennessee State is a good match for the Warriors in the Hawaii bowl. May not look good for the visitor count but I think the numbers will exceed expectation.

  20. Ohana Hawaii November 27, 2016 2:37 pm

Right on! Warriors. I hope you don’t someone really seriously good!

  21. z November 27, 2016 2:58 pm

I think Wyoming coach will be coach of the year but I can see Rolo being there in the future. I really like the young players on the team and many have already played. We have something to build on. Only one player can’t be replaced.

  22. H-Man November 27, 2016 3:32 pm

The only negative blogs are those who write about it, thereby bringing attention to it. Otherwise, most blogs are just people expressing a view, a concern, an opinion, like wow! 12 penalties for 101 yards last night.

  23. Inyoface November 27, 2016 3:34 pm

Rolo has got it have the best turnaround rate in the MWC. Especially since we picked to be dead last.

Man…coaching is a tough business. Bobby Hauck(UNLV). Chow(UH), Polian(Nevada), Caragher(SJSU), Polian(SJSU) and Deruyter(Fresno)….that is half the conference’s coaches who got let go in the last two seasons.

  28. 808 November 27, 2016 4:39 pm

I am glad the seniors will experience a bowl game before they hang up their cleats. Nice turn around from the previous 4 season’s. Congratulations Warriors!

  29. Maddog50 November 27, 2016 4:48 pm

In Coaching world 4 years is about all your gonna get to show positive strides. Hard job big paycheck-I posted mid year that there would be a number of changes. These and Fresno were the ones I had in mind, not surprised. There is one more out there that is one season away if similar results are delivered-I’m glad we are where we are at with Coach Rolivich and he picks up some money for bowl bid-

  30. SteveM November 27, 2016 4:54 pm

    Congrats to the team!

Its been a season of mixed feelings and emotions.
Tied 40-40 last night and UH on offense, I thought to myself, “This is likely our last possession. We have to score or we don’t deserve to go to the Hawaii bowl”.
On 4th down in the last defensive stand, it was “This is the game…stop them now or they will win (by 1 point — and I would not blame a loss on Rigo Sanchez for the missed PAT).

But they came through on both situations, and in my mind deserve the win and bowl bid.

The team is very young and the penalties should decrease in time. We ran, stumbled, and fell many times but made it to finish line. It was a good turnaround… not a unbelievable 1999 JJ record turnaround, but still a very good one. On to the good times and the Hawaii Bowl!

  31. Old Diver November 27, 2016 5:20 pm

The problem is not running off tackle. The problem UH had was running off tackle against superior teams.

  32. SteveM November 27, 2016 5:32 pm

A-House — I am not unsympathetic to your “run up the middle” observations. There were recent years when we did that often–especially when you had Joey Iosefa banging for at least 7 yards per carry. If I were a coach, I would keep running that until they stopped him.

I think any coach would say, “I’ll keep doing that until they stop us”. The problem is that previous coaches did know or would concede that they were stopped, and like a desperate slot machine player, keep putting in coins (running plays) hoping to hit the jackpot eventually…or then passed in very predictable situations. We know how that turned out.

Rolo and his current coaches and ex-team mates are more attuned, and while they may spin the reels a few more times to make sure they were stopped, they don’t bet the house on it. There is a good variety of plays now.

  33. H-Man November 27, 2016 5:33 pm

    Yup, recruit, recruit, recruit !!!

  34. 808warriorfan November 27, 2016 5:34 pm

HOW … JUST HOW … does one OL get 3 False Start penalties and HOW … JUST HOW … does the kickoff team get 2 False Start penalties … also while I’m ecstatic about the win and possibly going to The Hawaii Bowl I’d like to say that our defense vs UMass was PATHETIC … I don’t believe UMass loss … they ran out of time … if this game went on they would have won … believe we need a change in our ST Coordinator and an evaluation of the Defensive Staff … can you imagine what we could’ve been like if we had some semblance of a defensive unit ???

#13 … been thinking about that … another name to consider is Bob Davie of New Mexico … Boise State had an “off” year … Wyoming’s Craig Bohl is in his 3rd season (correct me if I’m wrong) … SDSU had Pumphrey … all College Magazines and the media had us last in the West Division and we end up in sole 2nd. Granted the Mountain Division is a lot stronger.

  40. Arcumfortis November 27, 2016 7:00 pm

A fun game last night. Yes there were numbskull penalties and big holes in the defense. But there was a lot of creativity in the offensive play calling and a great special teams call with the fake punt. When I go to a game I want to be entertained by innovation and creativity. There was enough last night to make me glad I attended. The last defensive series had the (small) crowd on their feet and making noise that sounded like 40,000 not the 20,000 (or so) who were there. It was great. Perfect? No. But compared to the last 4 years of painfully boring and hapless football this was so much better. The futur is bright with all the year underclassmen playing. Bring on the Hawaii Bowl and recruiting season.

  41. amela November 27, 2016 7:43 pm

Great win, of course they had to make us suffer through it. Hope they get a bowl bid they did a heck of a job considering the past few years that these boys had to go through. Seniors and current players deserve a season ending present.
Just one question, how does UMass or most teams run so well against us? It seems all the runners needed was one block and they had huge holes. Is it the players or the defensive calls?

  42. A-House November 27, 2016 8:21 pm

    burro:

I am not against running between tackles, but why do it when the opponent stacks the middle with 7 or 8 bodies who, most of the time, controlled the LOS knowing that UH would seldom run to the perimeter or do a QB option or pass to the flats for the “bubble pass”?

UH was successful last night because UMass, most of the time, did NOT “stack the middle creating running between tackles a very positive option/play — then, OC kept pressure on the flats with passes and perimeter runs – Saint Juste’s longest TD run began up the middle then he cut outside — for whatever reason, the “fly” pattern was good for UH last night — Collie and Ewaliko did well!

yes, there are many positives for 2017 and the returning players must work hard during the off season to increase their skills — power, speed, quickness, catching balls, etc.

will the 6′ 7″ OL from Australia recruit be UH # 1 recruit? will a highly recruited “local” player surprise us with a commitment/signing on LOI day? some here follow the local scene closely — what are your thoughts?

most will say that speed “kills”, but a smart DB who can run the 40 in 4.5 or 4.6 seconds with great intuition may be a better player to recruit – u know, “nose for the ball”

how did Jerry Rice become such an outstanding WR with only 4.6 speed in the 40? I almost had a heart attack when the 49ers selected him # 1 pick – Jerry who? from where? never heard of him! yes, what did he do to become a “hall of famer”?

me and Lopaka very happy and content!!!

  43. burro sabio November 27, 2016 8:39 pm

Mr. A-House, if you still don’t understand why, I don’t know what else to tell you. But again, why would you tell the enemy that you won’t attack a certain area?

  44. burro sabio November 27, 2016 8:42 pm

Regarding recruiting, I have no control over it so my thoughts don’t matter.

  45. The Flying O November 27, 2016 8:43 pm

The defense has been pretty terrible all season, but Kevin Lempa is a really good DC. Wait until they get their recruits to run Lempa’s system. Did you expect a top 10 defense in their first year coaching? Calm your tits.

  46. The Flying O November 27, 2016 8:46 pm

This type of technical discussion you’re trying to get into means that you probably broke down the all-22 film and studied the plays and are familiar with UH’s offensive schemes and philosophy and personnel, right? If so, you should write an article about it and enlighten us, like how bill barnwell on espn breaks down film with still shots of the field.

  47. The Flying O November 27, 2016 8:49 pm

becuase it’s really easy to be like “there are 8 in the box! i see it on tv right now! why don’t they just run a sweep or a bubble screen or etc etc!” without knowing the offensive scheme and principles, the play and the blocking assignments, how the defense aligning influences that as well as the coverages being shown, what the reads are, and so on. Also, it’s easy to say “quarterback x needs to audible out and just start slinging the ball around instead of just runs up the middle!” without knowing if the current personnel can even do that.

Unless of course, you actually DO know all this information and have broken down the film. Then by all means, please do a write up and teach us, because that would be interesting to read.

  48. Paniolo November 27, 2016 9:29 pm

As Coach Rolo staff is on the recruiting trail, I’m wondering if Coach Rolo will make any changes in his Staff for next season? I would like to see someone else calling the Offensive plays instead of Brian Smith.

  49. pakipark November 27, 2016 10:08 pm

International recruiting as in Australia? American Samoa? Congrats to Coach Rolo, his Assistant Coaches, Strength and Conditioning and Training Staff, and football program support staff, and especially the student-athletes. A lot to build on for the future. I’m hoping the entire Coaching, Strength/conditioning, Training, and support staffs comes back intact next year. The UofHawaii Football program could use continuity and stability. Good job this year. Enjoy the Bowl Game. Go ‘Bows.

    19.

I’m rooting for a match-up against either Texas-San Antonio or Southern Mississippi.

But then again, an Old Dominion or Western Kentucky may not be properly motivated to play, whom they would deem, an inferior opponent, and come out flat.

Worst case scenario, I think, is if we’re pitted against another team with a losing record, and then come out on the wrong side of the box score.

  51. cappie the dog November 27, 2016 10:40 pm

Not sure if OC-16 cameras picked this up, but at the end of the Mississippi State/Hawaii game, the Bulldogs head coach proved himself to be a very classy guy, stopping to talk to Briana Harris and Sarah Toeaina. They were the two Na Wahine who didn’t play like deer caught in the headlights.

    Gotta start Harris.

One player, who I don’t want to call out, looked scared to death out there.

  52. cappie the dog November 27, 2016 10:45 pm

It might be a long season for the men’s basketball team.

    C’mon, Mike.

    Play.

You know you’re on probation when two walk-ons are getting significant minutes.

  53. Tempmanoa November 28, 2016 5:21 am

Everyone has a right to their opinion or criticism. At this point, though, congratulations are in order for players and staff. They overcame a lot of the problems critics (and guys who were just realists) pointed out and managed 6 wins and a bowl game, in a season that might have produced 8 wins but for one bad play or turnover when it looked like we might win just 3 or 4 games. I think Rolo has many of his own criticisms of how we coached and played and it is his style to deal with these until they get fixed as soon as possible– we will be better at these things next year.
