Who lit up Aloha Stadium?

Nick Rolovich wants answers:

> “Who started the phone/flashlight (sequence at Saturday’s game)?”

> “Who started the wave?”

“I need to know,” Rolovich said. “I want that person to claim responsibility because (he or she deserves) a T-shirt.”

Rolovich said he will give T-shirts to the originators as long as their claims are “supported by sufficient evidence.”

And one more thing:

> “Why don’t we have a homecoming queen?”

Rolovich added: “We should dial in with Hawaiian Studies and have a Hawaiian homecoming king and queen.”

We’ll print answers to other queries tomorrow on the Warrior Beat and in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

    First…woot woot

If I recall correctly, UH used to have a homecoming court…. I think ChawanCut remembers playing music as the court proceeded around the stadium, usually in Mustang and Corvette convertibles….

  4. NotNasti October 18, 2016 11:22 am

The flashlight (starlight) sequence was really cool. I started getting a flashback high.

  5. J-Dog October 18, 2016 11:25 am

    RE: Cellphone Lights

Earlier Saturday during Ohio St vs Wisconsin, the Wisconsin fans were doing it. Not sure if they were the ones who started it, but I just assumed someone at the UH game watched that game earlier in the day.

  6. Boolakanaka October 18, 2016 11:31 am

Karen Yano, was the last UH homecoming queen, I remember–wife of Arnold Morgado.

  7. Bryson October 18, 2016 11:48 am

I don’t know who started the flashlight sequence.

I think Gaylord was responsible for the Wave starting

  8. chawan_cut October 18, 2016 12:00 pm

yes back a long time ago when i was in the uh band, there was a homecoming court and i recall them riding by us on the field in convertibles. we played a song called Sweetheart of Sigma Pi or something.
thought it weird that it was homecoming but they never did anything to try and get alumni to come back.
at other schools, its a big thing.
i’m glad that coach has made a big effort to bring all the former players home. thanks coach

  9. Ipu Man October 18, 2016 12:02 pm

Homecoming Queen and King could be UH grads
who suffered disabling wounds/diseases… not just
    the young current students.

  10. Duster October 18, 2016 12:04 pm

#7, I believe the song would be “Sweetheart of Sigma Chi”.

We had a Sigma Chi fraternity chapter at the undergraduate college I attended, and they had a several co-eds who were “sweethearts”.

  11. cocobean October 18, 2016 12:05 pm

Someone was flashing his phone on and off during the game at first I thought it was a laser pointer. That person was sitting in the last row orange north end zone two sections down from the band.

  12. UH Fan for Life October 18, 2016 12:06 pm

There was a guy in the north end zone orange section behind the goal post that started the wave. He tried many times before it took off. It really picked up speed during an injury time out for a UH player.

  13. Jeezy33 October 18, 2016 12:07 pm

Hawaii Kai Dolphins had a huge section of kids who started the cell phone lights ..

  14. hitmanhart October 18, 2016 12:10 pm

coach time to go black !! or all green !! the white is to close to the other teams colors might be better on the player eyes to see who is who !! might help the defence a lot and the qb

  15. UH Fan for Life October 18, 2016 12:10 pm

Correction- the guy who started the wave was in the south end zone not north. He was wearing a black t shirt so Rolo should give him a green one.

  16. A-House October 18, 2016 12:18 pm

    yep, yep!

the lights of “home” were on — sounds like a Don Ho song about coming home! was it One Paddle Two Paddle?

    yes, yes, it was GREAT

  17. A-House October 18, 2016 12:21 pm

hit the wrong button – continuing from above:

great to see and participate in the ‘wave” again — first time in 4 years?

cell phone lights just prove the number of fans who own a “smart phone” — mine still in the dark ages — flip phone!

  18. haka October 18, 2016 12:21 pm

The wave was started by the south end zone “always cheering section” by the UH tunnel.

  19. haka October 18, 2016 12:23 pm

Roger that UH fan for life!!!

  20. Jason October 18, 2016 12:33 pm

I can corroborate UH Fan for Life‘s statement that the wave started with someone in the south end zone, orange section. It took several tries but finally took off.

  21. Down with... October 18, 2016 12:39 pm

Side topic, a few years ago at a UH game the Wave was started and lasted almost a full quarter. And that’s no joke, i think it was 12 minutes something of the actual quarter time.

Anyway, regarding cell light, the first guy I saw was in the yellow section in north endzone. single light that turned into thousand within a few minutes. Pretty cool fan-experience.

  22. Chicken Grease October 18, 2016 1:17 pm

“I need to know,” Rolovich said. “I want that person to claim responsibility because (he or she deserves) a T-shirt.”

Are we seeing penchant for distraction in coach? Never mind about this, coach. You gonna 20 guys coming to your office, all “yeah. Was I. I staht ’em, guarans.”

Only three more home games. Hope he is not distracted from that.

  23. islandman October 18, 2016 1:30 pm

Air Force can PASS too, they had 280 yards passing vs. New Mexico. more than their rushing yards of 251, including TD passes of 53 and 20 yards. In the their game vs. Wyoming, they had TD passes of 75 and 49 yards.

  24. H-Man October 18, 2016 1:32 pm

The cellphone lights were cool. The wave too. Gaylord’s presence adds to the excitement. It was a fun time at Aloha Stadium.

  25. Steve P October 18, 2016 1:59 pm

I thought the crowd was really cool and was bringing the old spirit back to life. Hey, this is Rolo’s first year. Just because we lost by a few points doesn’t mean the whole football program is now in the toilet. It often takes a couple of years for programs to bounce back from the trash heap..and by the way a homecoming king and Queen is a good idea. Resuscitation is a slow process….lets help breath some life into this thing and not get sooooo down just because Rolo doesn’t have us in the bloody Rosebowl.

  26. not Sean October 18, 2016 3:36 pm

#s 14, 17, 19…yes, I saw that too. Sputtered a few times before it caught and ran, but ran it did and real good, too. I’t’s been too long.
Early 1st quarter, dude behind me tried starting one, but no luck. We helped him all we could, but nobody can see that kine stuff happening in the blue section.

#20, I saw the flashlights first in the north end zone, yellow also. And I remember that tsunami, too. That was a long one and kept having plenty ripples at the end.

  27. turfwar October 18, 2016 3:50 pm

That phone light moment was surreal, gave me chicken skin. Seen it at concerts and the Super Bowl during halftime performances on tv but was that a first for a college game? During the 70’s or 80’s I think either Kalapana or Country Comfort played a spanish song called Sabor a Mi at club gigs and I found the song on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk1iZ8na42I where the fans did the phone light thing during this song. We need to find a song or time where we do it every game. Make it a moment that’s ours in Aloha Stadium.

  28. turfwar October 18, 2016 3:51 pm

I also confirm the south end zone is where the wave started.

  29. z October 18, 2016 4:30 pm

    Watching game again.

  30. cocobean October 18, 2016 4:40 pm

#25. not Sean. My memory is not as good as yours. It was the last row of the Yellow north end zone. He was the only one doing it which made me wonder at first if it was a laser pointer. There may have been a person or two with him but that entire section seemed empty that’s why it stood out.

  31. UH Fan for Life October 18, 2016 4:46 pm

After seeing the wave followed by the smartphone flashlights, wouldn’t it be cool to see a wave of smartphone flashes?

  32. Annoddah Dave October 18, 2016 4:53 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

From where I sat, the cell phone lights appeare in numbers by a bunch of youngsters behind the UNLV bench in the lower orange. I looked at them with the binoculars then all of a sudden like a flash mob, all the lights went on! The wave was started in the South End Zone orange, near the Warrior tunnel.

  33. 808bowler October 18, 2016 4:53 pm

My friend said a guy in the north end zone on the top row started the light thing

  34. Bryson October 18, 2016 4:54 pm

Stephen can you ask Coach Rolo how much does it cost to watch a game from the sidelines…Thanks

  35. Maukamom October 18, 2016 5:30 pm

I remember the last Homecoming Queen was when I was attending in 1989. After that, UH decided to NOT do a Queen, but replace it with a Homecoming “scholar” or something (silly) like that. Of course, that didn’t last. It eventually died, then nothing.
It would be nice to bring it back, as it did bring some excitement to the day. However, I think the reason UH didn’t want a Queen was motivated by “political correctness”.

As for the lights, it was spectacular! I thought that I missed a memo on that one, though. 🙂

  36. forsurftoo October 18, 2016 6:56 pm

I would be careful what we wish for……not sure the “gender” thing will allow for a “King”/”Queen” maybe a “something”…….

  37. justsomeguy October 18, 2016 7:39 pm

    #22 Chicken Grease…

Glad to see you think our coach is so simple minded that he cannot possibly notice something thousands of people in the crowd are doing….and not still do his job properly. So much faith you have eh?

This is the best offense us fans have seen in YEARS. I think Coach Rolo is doing a damn fine job. Maybe appreciate something instead of finding something so trivial to gripe about? Aloha is positive, not negative.

  38. NorthShoreFan October 18, 2016 8:11 pm

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…Bootiful Evening!
#37…”Aloha is positive, not negative.”…Cheeehoo!…I ditto dat!
Fans want somethings that might not be available …yet….Warrior Fans…support the team and know that we are rebuilding and some day soon….
Keep on keeping on Coach Rolo!
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  39. cappie the dog October 18, 2016 8:18 pm

I don’t think you should start the wave during an injury timeout, especially if it’s one of our own players.

  40. Kaipo'i October 18, 2016 8:46 pm

Cell phone light started with one single guy in the yellow section North End Zone. I was wondering what is he or she was doing, waving back and forth and circular. Then 2 here, 3 there and bam, lights everywhere. Great job!

Warriors, keep up the excitement! Mahalo for the many players who take the time after a tough lost to “High 5” a Warrior-Crazed 4 year old who is excitingly there to see his football heroes. The Warriors made his night.

  41. Slugger October 18, 2016 11:15 pm

    Aloha, Stephen!

Good job, coaching staff, even though it wasn’t a win. It wasn’t a blow out. Getting better.

Nice to see Rolo & the Tsaikos at the Call the Coach hour. Aloha to all the other Tsaikos I nevah see yet.

I would have loved to have seen the UH stands light up. I remember doing the wave. Now we have enough people in the stands to do the wave.

    Night all!
