Warriors picked last in West

LAS VEGAS — The Warriors were picked to finish sixth in the Mountain West Conference’s six-team West Division, according to a media poll released at this morning’s Media Days.

“Not winning a conference game last year probably shows what people think of us, and that’s OK,” first-year UH coach Nick Rolovich said. “We are what our record was last year until we change it.”

Safety Daniel Lewis said: “I don’t like the pick. Nobody likes to be last. But it’s definitely another form of motivation for the guys. Guys are upset about the pick as I am. We’re going to use this to fuel us.”

Here was the predicted order of the West:

1. San Diego State — 172 points, 27 first-place votes

4. Fresno State — 76 points
5. UNLV — 73 points
5. UNLV — 73 points
6. Hawaii — 35 points

2. Air Force — 126 (2)
3. Utah State — 111
4. Colorado State — 95
5. New Mexico — 74
6. Wyoming — 31

No UH player was named to the MWC All-Preseason team.

I hope the players and coaches bookmark this page… Nothing better than to prove people wrong…

  2. Maddog50 July 26, 2016 5:44 am

Not surprised. Program in transition new coaches players system etc. the last four years do not warrant much more given the unknowns-this will not be the final result at all but not surprised nor discouraged at all at this point-Go Warriors!

  3. WarriorNY July 26, 2016 5:49 am

In 2010, the Warriors were picked to finish 7th by media and 5th by coaches in the WAC…

Given the enigma that Hawaii is right now, I guess people won’t have confidence until they see a product on the field. But based on the amount of players returning from last year this is a little surprising they got so little points… Less than half of UNLV seems a bit low…

For all the staunch fans the new Media Guide featured in this post is ready and about to be loaded on to the Warrior Home page. In is extremely well done and features everything you want to know about UH football. Just hit the links menu and you will find it. Was told by Derek Inouchi it will be there by Aug 1. The 2015 version has already been removed. It’s a great piece-Go Warriors!!!!!!

  5. WarriorNY July 26, 2016 5:54 am

    Thanks Maddog50,
I will look that up soon…

  6. Shoko July 26, 2016 6:42 am

Aztecs has proven you don’t need a star QB to win a championship. All you need is players that are voted as preseason players of the year in offense, defense and s-p-e-c-i-a-l teams.

  7. Ipu Man July 26, 2016 7:37 am

To me, how good a team depends on your offensive linemen
and defense as a whole. And trick plays. And a good kicker/punter.
Heard they want to eliminate kickoffs in the near future.

    Make Hawaii Football Great Again!

  9. jojo July 26, 2016 8:15 am

Not completely surprised, but I’m optimistic that the Bows won’t be last when it comes to the end of the season. I will enjoy every game I can while I’m able to!

HI DPK!!! I see you from my office window!!!

  10. diamonds808 July 26, 2016 8:20 am

Great motivation for our guys! Looking at what the coaching staff has done throughout so far – on and off the field, this team will be striving for the top! Let’s go Bows!

  11. shadow July 26, 2016 8:24 am

Curious why UH website back to showing Spring Roster again. They had up-to-date roster posted a few days last week. (Figure you still can make additions while having the latest roster up than changing back to the spring one.)

  12. shadow July 26, 2016 8:39 am

First impression I got when I saw the pics of the media guides listed in predicted order of finish: UH picked last and the guys shown standing around. (Waiting for things to happen?) Everybody else got action shots of their guys. (They’re gonna make things happen!)

Would’ve been nice showing our guys more dynamic than static . . .

  13. Rodney July 26, 2016 8:42 am

    Picked last! Just an opinion!!
    Let’s shock the MWC!!!
    Imua Warriors!!!!

  14. Capt. Ron July 26, 2016 9:42 am

Last, huh. Like Mr. Lewis said, this will serve as motivation. I think it interesting that Fresno State has their coach as the center of their media guide. I understand that the coach is critical (as Rolo has inspired us as well as the players) but they missed an opportunity to honor and build up the players. As for the media vote, it just shows they don’t follow this blog! And it gives us one more war cry to add to: Defend Pride Rock; Live Aloha, Play Warrior. I suggest “Go for Broke”, cause when you last you might as well give it your all. And it is a Hawaii tradition!

  15. islandman July 26, 2016 10:03 am

Last year, UH was picked 5th, ahead of UNLV.

  16. Bryson July 26, 2016 10:17 am

I feel good about this season we can’t go anywhere but up,I think our team may surprise some people especially since they won’t have an idea of what kind of offense we will throw at them alot different from the predictable run, run, pass, punt offense of the past 4 seasons…defensively I think we will be fine we have alot of athletic players on that side of the ball and I think there are a few freshman who will make an immediate impact for us

  17. H-Man July 26, 2016 10:47 am

Hawaii being picked last is where it should be after being blown out and embarrassed by Boise St and Air Force. Hawaii also lost all of its Mountain West games last season. So now it’s time to prove they are much better, but they will need a quarterback to lead the offense and a defense that can win the turnover battle and show some pass rush/blitzing schemes to disrupt the opponent’s passing attack. Kicker/Punter Rigo Sanchez is a real weapon in the kicking game.

Thought Woolsey was a rs junior this coming season?

  19. NorthShoreFan July 26, 2016 11:49 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
The predictions are in…only one way Warriors can go…UP!
Predictions are just SWAGs…WARRIORS will prove them wrong.
I sure as hell don’t remember any games from last year and just focusing on this year. OMHO, all the teams are bunched together as #1…no 2016 record to compare to.
Time for the WARRIORS to get really busy. Fun and Games are over!
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid July 26, 2016 11:54 am

The media have had their say. Meh.

Its up to the Warriors now, how their story ends. Each day is, each practice and each game are the Warriors’ chance to write their own book. I’m thinking it will be a masterpiece.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid July 26, 2016 11:58 am

jojo? You see me from your office window? I must apologize, unless of course you can see Sweety too. 😆

  22. Willie July 26, 2016 12:31 pm

Hey, Bows and Warriors have been here before. No pressure, only journey available is up. Leave it all out there on the field, hoping for the renowned take no prisoners defense that Hawaii teams have been renowned for in the past. Go kick some Mainland team Okoles!!!

  23. Slugger July 26, 2016 12:58 pm

Aloha! Go, Warriors, GO! I still believe. I’ll be yelling whether at a game or in front of a TV or my ‘puter.

  24. wafan July 26, 2016 1:18 pm

DPK! You traumatized Jojo? Hopefully she will not lose her eyesight!

  25. BigWave96744 July 26, 2016 1:22 pm

#12, in regards to a media guide picture of guys standing around, the 2007 had a similar picture with Colt & a couple guys standing.

  26. 808warriorfan July 26, 2016 1:22 pm

Today is July 26th … Aug 26th our time it’s kick off vs Cal.

    CAN’T WAIT …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  27. Kapahulu July 26, 2016 1:23 pm

    DPK:
I would also like to offer my Congratulation to you for winning the Sugar Bowl Ring. I’m glad that it went to one of the original Tsaiko’s. You deserve it!

I was one of those UH Fans in attendance at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
That whole thing was such an awesome experience. Good Fun!

  28. jojo July 26, 2016 2:45 pm

Not traumatized at all, wafan. The beautiful sweety is easy to look at. DPK was in the corner!

I would like to say that Vegas is wrong this time! You gotta take that from someone who has never had lost money there!!

  29. wafan July 26, 2016 3:45 pm

    Greetings, Jojo!

Thank goodness you were not traumatized. You cannot continue your work without those eyes!

    DPK was in time-out . . . again. Geez.

  30. Dano July 26, 2016 4:30 pm

If the 1999 team can turn an 0-12 team around into a 9-4 team, it is very possible this 2016 can do something similar. Rolo is a coach J.J. disciple.

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid July 26, 2016 5:02 pm

    Big Wave –
“#12, in regards to a media guide picture of guys standing around, the 2007 had a similar picture with Colt & a couple guys standing.”

Amen. Media don’t play the games, the WARRIORS do!

Dano@30 – Yup. One of the nicest things about Rolo is JJ’s DNA. Fans relate to it and the players love it. Not to mention the last time we were champs, one of JJ’s assistants, McMacken was the HC. Rol0 was in that picture too IIRC.

  32. al July 26, 2016 6:04 pm

I actually beg to differ, in that Rolo is doing all the things that JJ never did.
For example recruit hard and making it a top priority. Relentlessly making visits and social media contacts. Working tirelessly.

Getting out in the public in many venues, working extremely hard to connect with the fans and families.

He does all this true local style.
    Leads by example.

    Go Rolo!
    …nuff said

  33. z July 26, 2016 6:32 pm

We junk until we prove otherwise. Just do it.

I would worry more about all that construction going on near the stadium. Really bad right now. All for a choo choo to nowhere.

  34. z July 26, 2016 6:35 pm

Just me but what I really think the team needs is on the field leadership.

  35. Paniolo July 26, 2016 6:57 pm

With 17 starters from Norm Chow’s 2015 team returning: 10 on the offensive side and 7 on the defensive side, there is no way our Warriors will be sitting in the celler another year.
With 17 starters returning, a new head football coach and staff, I really our Warriors will win enough game to finally make it to our local Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on December 24, 2016.

  36. Tutu Kane Ale July 26, 2016 9:21 pm

Last place is not bad until the warriors do something miraculous about being better then last place and like the Media poll and Coach Rolovich is dead right about being last place so for them to prove everyone wrong is coming sooner or later?

  37. oldtimer808 July 26, 2016 10:58 pm

Z makes a good point about the rail disrupting traffic and parking at the stadium. The stadium authority should come up with a better plan to mitigate the traffic situation and be proactive. I agree with most of you that Rolo appears to be on the right track with the kind of attitude that we all can relate to. And ST continue to take care of your health and eat a heart healthy diet.

My reaction to be being picked last (warning explicit language)

  39. Maddog50 July 27, 2016 4:36 am

I am definitely an optimist regarding Warrior Football. I do know a little more than the typical fan-this team is deeper in talent than in recent past. This team is bigger and more developed than in the recent past-this team has more talent than the record shows, and now will be placed in a system to succeed. I have no doubt that it will surpass the projections of some-one thing I am sure of, every time I read the sports section I am almost guaranteed that certain writers will have an article that is pessimistic or cynical. Not one to sidestep the truth or obvious reality-the reality is this team will exceed expectations-take that to the bank! Go Warriors!!!!!

    No sked ’em, Warriors.

    Go get ’em!

  43. Darren July 27, 2016 6:48 am

    It’s actually singular…certain writer.

There’s no doubt this team has the talent to be competitive in conference. It’ll come down to execution and QB play in particular that determines whether or not it’ll translate to wins.
