Warriors made the grade in the spring

Things are looking up for the University of Hawaii football team — in the class room.

The Rainbow Warriors reported an overall 2.82 grade-point average for the recently completed spring semester, a jump from the past fall’s 2.56 GPA.

Forty-one of the 83 players on the spring roster had a GPA of 3.0 or better the past semester.

Six non-roster players who were on scholarship also had a GPA of at least 3.0.

The players rebounded from what head coach Nick Rolovich termed as a “real emotional fall.” Norm Chow was fired as head coach after the ninth game of what finished as a 3-10 season in 2015.

“It was a tough time period for these kids to go through, a lot of uncertainty,” said Rolovich, who was hired on Nov. 27. “I’m sure that had an effect on their fall-semester (grades). The fall probably is hard, anyway, because of football. Add on the mid-season coaching change.”

The Warriors missed 15 school days because six road trips in 2015.

The cumulative spring grades showed the players “had the ability to do it” academically, Rolovich said. “I think you saw guys who had good GPAs (in the fall) keep them up there (in the spring), and you saw guys, who maybe struggled in the fall, really commit to (academics).”

Rolovich said there were some players whose GPA “jumped a whole grade point’” from the fall to the spring.

Long-snapper/linebacker Noah Borden’s 3.97 GPA for the spring semester was the highest among the Warriors.

Rolovich praised his assistant coaches and the academic counselors.

“All the tutors and mentors deserve credit,” Rolovich said. “I think the position coaches took pride in their group and stayed on top of them. The position coaches are responsible for the academics of their group.”

    hello, good neighbor!

interesting all the local HS “walk-ons” — who is the coordinator?

Wassup with Dru Brown has he accepted the offer from UH?

  7. Boolakanaka May 27, 2016 7:44 am

Cappie, about your insinuation about Brian Norwood, I have known Brian for close to 35 years, played with him and know him personally–you won’t find a straighter arrow or a nicer person. That type of veiled comment without fact and/or evidence is not cool at all–ask anyone that knows Brian, on the field and away, and they will without reservation, say he is one of the nicest guys around.

    #7 Boola

I agree with you that Brian Norwood is a class act and good guy. I was actually hoping that he would be the guy at UH five years ago, but they hired Norm Chow instead.

  15. turfwar May 27, 2016 9:27 am

Thanks Boo. I too thought that comment was a cheap shot and considering the allegations a pretty serious attack on a persons character if based just on what has so far surfaced.

  16. Boolakanaka May 27, 2016 9:45 am

14 and 15, mahalo nui!!! One, Brian is a personal friend. Two, to place and conflate him in such a cavalier way, with such heinous behavior as a three decade serial pedophile and an institution that has just entirely failed, on a systemic level, to protect its students, is not just unfair, it’s entirely inappropriate.

Long story short, Brian is one of the all-time good guys.

NorthShoreFan — most are aware that a “company logo” could possibly be the Tsai-ko graphic
created by A-Joe. The legal holder of the Tsai-ko graphic copyright has just ordered a shirt in #11 above 🙂

A-Joe can scale it to whatever photo-ready size needed if the “company logo” is possible or desired. Please share your findings on the blog.

  18. JaM May 27, 2016 11:23 am

NSF..add one more to my order..1 small and 1 medium..Thanks!

  19. jm2375 May 27, 2016 12:00 pm

believe wafan wants in too – size xxl, but better double check with him first

  20. Derek May 27, 2016 1:05 pm

I hope the increased GPAs for the team will carryover onto the football field in terms of less unnecessary penalties, and smarter decisions and better discipline and thus better production on all aspects, offense, defense, and special teams. I like the trends that Rolo and his staff are taking to have a better team this year and going forward. I’m especially impressed with the recruits they are targeting and how hard they are working at it everyday.

  21. Kaipo'i May 27, 2016 1:29 pm

    NSF,
Don’t know what the count is but if get space, count me in for a Large.

    Mahalo

  22. NorthShoreFan May 27, 2016 1:31 pm

Mahalo to Maddog50..we could do a give away contest…

Group “logo” will go on back of shirt..awaiting permission
    stay tuned for more.

  23. z May 27, 2016 1:51 pm

No make sense. It appears problem was also with Baylor athletic department admin. Yet AD gets probation and gets to pick the next coach. What up with that?

  24. Bryson May 27, 2016 2:33 pm

Anyone figure out what’s going on with Netane Muti? Is he Manoa bound still?

  25. cappie the dog May 27, 2016 3:55 pm

    Boolakanaka-

    I apologize.

I do not want to be a pariah on this board.

It was an irresponsible and unwarranted comment.

  26. Boolakanaka May 27, 2016 3:58 pm

Cappie– no worries, no problem, no big ting–we all good.

Plus, you got a real good memory, and post some really good things!!!!

  29. ML Warrior May 27, 2016 7:32 pm

What are the sizes available on the shirts that are for sale?

  30. A-House May 27, 2016 8:05 pm

    ML Warrior:

look at the beginning of this post – Na Koa has posted the sizes – unless they changed XXL is the largest size.

I know that some Tsaikos may not fit into a 2XL — hmmmmmmmmm!

  31. A-House May 27, 2016 8:06 pm

only time will tell what UH record will be for 2016.

  34. NorthShoreFan May 28, 2016 12:43 am

Maddog50…spoke with Joyce and she said they don’t want to collect partial payments. They want it all together. Make payment to me when time to do so. I will post collection info. later.
