Warriors land tall corner

Donovan “Dub” Dalton’s verbal commitment is a boost for the Warriors during this recruiting season. Here’s what the Saguaro High (Ariz.) senior brings:

> Remember six years ago when UNLV’s 6-foot-3 wideout Phillip Payne created matchup nightmares for UH cornerbacks? The receiver position has been trending upward, on the tape measure, the past few years. UH, among many teams, has been countering with taller corners. Jalen Rogers and Rojesterman Farris II are both 6-1. Terrence Sayles, who moved from wideout to corner is 6-2. Tyrus Tuiasosopo, who is redshirting this season is 6-4. Dalton is 6-4 and 195 pounds. “I’m lengthy, I’m physical,” Dalton said. “I like to play man.”

> The Warriors employ football’s version of the EKG, gauging a player’s heart for the sport. Dalton loves basketball — he was a member of Minnesota’s state championship team in 2013 — but he loves football more. “That’s my love at heart,” Dalton said.

> Dalton has workable speed (4.6 in the 40), but a high football IQ, vast knowledge of the sport (his father is a long-time coach) and athletic skills (he first dunked a basketball as a freshman).

> The Warriors are establishing a recruiting post in Arizona. (Thanks for the game, RichRod.) They also have honed their scouting resources. Dalton lived in Minnesota through his sophomore season, and Saguaro is his second Arizona high school since moving to the desert state. By the time, other schools played Where’s Dalton, he already had committed to the Warriors.

> Credit UH players for passing the “I” test. Safety Keala Santiago and cornerback Zach Wilson were hosts to prospects who shared the same position as them. They were unselfish in promoting the program even if it meant adding to competition. They are the frontrunners for the next Unselfish Player Trophy, an award that debuted at last week’s team banquet.

2 of 10 or 20% by most standards is poor when academic standards is 75% of higher; but, in a team sport, the 20% may represent very talented, committed student athletes who will make himself and his team mates better — that, by some standards is very good/outstanding!

not to say that the other 80% will not commit to UH

still waiting for word that the Poly Aussie has reaffirmed his commitment to UH which could lead to the other Poly Aussie, you know the 6′ 10″ youngster, to follow in the footsteps of other Aussies who have played for UH such as Colin Scotts, Paul Manera ( is that correct? ) and Scott Harding

A-House: I’ve wondered about the status of Kavapalu, too, particularly since Naeole tripped to Australia last week. As for the 6-10 Baby Shaq, he’s gone big time … think he “redshirted” at a football factory on the East Coast, where the likes of Alabama gets its recruits.

    Maddog50:

my Paul “Zumo” Lee post — was he on a scholarship? if no, that’s what I meant as a “walk-on” — back then, most of the scholarship players were from the mainland and nothing against that

I do not know what medical specialty he is in nor where he is practicing today

prior to your time at UH, Larry Scherrer (sp) was a running back and today a dentist on Kauai Island.

and the Air Force cheating scandal that brought several good players to Hawaii such as Casey Ortiz and Larry Arnold — correct me if I am wrong as my memory keeps fading — was Golden Richards in that group?

    Clyde: your #9

    OK, 50% is good!!!!!!

so, Alabama and Michigan may battle for his services? will know next year as I think he is a year below Kavalapu.

  13. What??? December 6, 2016 7:24 pm

Stop talking about the same recruit every day, you going make bachi bumbye

Larry Arnold was the QB during the days of Coach Don King. Some of the players who played with Arnold are Larry Cole, Bill Massey, Rich Leon, and McKinley Reynolds. Larry Cole was also an Air Force transfer and of course played many years at DE for the Dallas Cowboys. He was a great player, one of the UH all time players for sure.

Casey Ortiz played under Head Coach Dave Holmes who took over from King. During those days, UH had golf helmets and gold pans with green jerseys. Golden Richards played for Holmes too. Some of the players I remember that played for Holmes were Elroy Chong, Allen Brown, Cliff Laboy, Jeris White, Hal Stringert, etc. Under Holmes they beat Washington 10-7 in Seattle. My memory is fading, but I do know that White and Stringert were 2 of the best pair of cornerbacks in UH history. Of course, While got drafted in the 2nd round. I always wondered what happened to Stringert. He was great at St. Louis too.

Funny, I mean gold helmets and gold pants. Getting old, man!

Yup – your memory has faded. None these guys came from Air Force.

Casey Ortiz – SMU. Golden Richards – BYU. Larry Arnold – don’t know, but not air force.

Guessing based on Rolo’s “WARRIOR2WARRIOR” tweet…..that might be former Warrior DE Jamie Tago (who is tripping this weekend from Garden City Community College)……but also could be a Warrior from Tafuna HS…..

That’s who I was thinking also

Mike, I, too, have issues about where our country is heading, but tonight, during the national anthem, was about honoring the loss of life, both military and civilian alike, in 1941, not the state of the nation in 2016.

If the other three players, including your teammate, has a hand over his heart, maybe it would be prudent to do so likewise, because you’re representing our school, and more importantly, the state of Hawaii.

Baby Shaq is attending football power house IMG academy in Florida. Just how big they are? One of the top recruits in the nation just won the Butkus award for high school. He committed to the University of Alabama where the current college Butkus award winner is graduating from.

  23. Maddog50 December 7, 2016 2:55 am

A House just to clear up some items. I was teammates with Jeris White as we were freshmen together. Larry Sherrer was a Senior when I was a sophomore Massey a Senior when I was a freshman. Richards Ortiz Harold Stringert were all teammates. I was there from 70-73 under Dave Holmes. My Senior year we finished 9-2 with the opening win over Washington and a final win over Utah 7-6 in the muck and mire to the old stadium. You can get great info from the media guide and year by year stats on the UH football website-now let’s go get a W on Dec 24th! GoWarriors!!!!!

  24. Maddog50 December 7, 2016 3:02 am

Kavapalu is a recruit for next year. He attends IMG Academy a elite school/Training academy catering to several sports. Annual cost approximately 70K. You can look it up and get a better feel for it.

  25. cheepono December 7, 2016 6:29 am

6’7″ 310lbs kavapulu graduated already. he’s the one committed to UH. he doesn’t attend IMG. 6’10” 320 lbs daniel faalele is c/o 2018 and is at IMG. we have no shot at daniel. his junior year he’s already been offered by miami, LSU, and michigan.

was going kavapulu would be able to sign in Dec and be here for spring semester but we’ll have to wait and see.

  26. cheepono December 7, 2016 6:30 am

    hoping* not going

  27. Maddog50 December 7, 2016 8:28 am

Cheepono I really screwed that up!!! That’s what happens when you are not quite awake. Thanks for the correction. Ernie is by all reports a strong commit to us and supposed to be an early enrollee.

  28. H-Man December 7, 2016 8:52 am

I see DE Jordan Flack/Moorpark is a soft veral commit. What is a soft verbal?

  29. Ganiks December 7, 2016 8:53 am

Tall don’t mean nothing if he doesn’t have speed! How fast is this buggah? Need the personnel to be able to catch the guys who blow around the corner of our d-line. Never going to forget how fast that guy from UTM and UA were! Get ‘um Warriors!
