Wade signs contract

Better late than … oh, never mind.

The important thing is Warrior volleyball coach Charlie Wade has a new two-year contract that runs through June 2016.

Wade’s original five-year contract expired a couple months ago. He continued working through an agreement letter he signed the past spring.

Under terms of what is technically an extension, Wade will receive a slight bump on an estimated $105,000 annual salary.

Wade was among several UH head coaches whose contracts were in limbo.

Two of Dave Shoji’s former top assistants — Charlie Wade and UCLA head coach Mike Sealy — were on the Manoa campus yesterday:

Love him, don’t love him, there are three things to know about Gov. Abercrombie, this week’s honorary captain:

> He loves UH sports.

> He is credited with helping to release funds to renovate the UH athletic complex.

> He understands the palaka shirt’s symbolism of Hawaii’s labor workers.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to Charlie Wade!! He’s working hard getting the boys ready for the season and making sure they’re doing well in the classroom.

Don’t forget about the MVB Golf Tournament on Sept 25 @ Olomana GC. We are still looking for players, sponsors and prize donations. For more info, see the MVB page @ hawaiiathletics.com.

    Anxiously awaiting tomorrow’s game.

Stephen: Gibson’s is now the Toyota-Servco Dealership. The Sky Slide is now a Sizzler (locally run). Still remember those burlap bag like rugs you had to sit on to go down the Sky Slide.

Oh, yeah, UH – 42, NI – 28. NI plays an inspired game and may even be ahead at the half, but UH pulls away.

  15. hatakeman September 12, 2014 8:31 am

Yeah, I remember Wags wearing a palaka shirt to games. Tried looking on the net for a photo but couldn’t find one. There’s one with Niko Noga, Alvis Satele and Kurt Kafentzis (1983).

  16. Always A UH Fan September 12, 2014 8:34 am

I miss Ethel’s Okazuya on S. King Street at the corner of Kaheka. Best Inari and Maki sushi. Always brought sushi from Ethel’s for tailgate at UH games.

UH will have a more diverse offense this Saturday, but will miss having Joey in lineup.

Enjoy watching Wahine too. Tai look more “free” in her play and Olivia, wow!

    GO WARRIORS GO WAHINE!!!

  17. Maddog50 September 12, 2014 8:41 am

NIU has nothing to lose in this game. Pressure all on Warriors. Gonna come at them with everything and plain flat out win this. Go Warriors!!!

Boulevard Saimin has always been a local favorite. Someone told me that there was some type of family dispite within the family that resulted in other members breaking away and opening Tanaka Saimin on Nimitz. I also like Shige’s in Wahiawa, but I digress….

#14: Is there a Sizzler there now? I thought all Sizzler Restaurants closed on Oahu . . .

They’re all called “Goko”s or something like that. Never tried since they changed the name, but, supposedly, it’s a bit of a franchise deal (with the Sizzler’s HQ dealed in somehow). I thought you knew, though, shadow. Yuk yuks: http://www.needtoconsume.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/the-shadow-knows-1920×1080-full-hd.png

Anyway, just go to Hy’s if you need a good steak and no like make your own. It’s where a Grease goes 🙂 .

  24. Old School Dave September 12, 2014 9:11 am

Shadow: I stand corrected in that Sizzler’s closed, but another Steak House called Goko’s was there, but they’ve gone out of business, too. Heard that the service was pretty poor at both places – same staff.

We now have over 160 Hawaii fans at the Rice road game (Houston, TX?); come join us at the 40 yard line behind our Warrior bench for only $20; plus the locals there will be putting on the best tailgate with the best Hawaiian food (some work for United so I think they will ship in fresh lau laus, etc). Come on all you mainland people!

Abercrombie selection as honorary captain is a great choice.

Forget the boo birds with their shallow comments about Chow’s pick.

It’s the lasting impression that Abercrombie leaves on the team that’s important.

I say it’s good. I would also think Abercrombie would have a spirited message to impart on to the team. If anything he is not going to fail because he does have a way with words and a story to tell.

I say it’s all embracing, especially anytime when the top person in the State gives of his time to give the team a little cheer, which in it’s self speaks volumes. Why would anyone curl their nose at Chow’s selection this week? It shouldn’t come down to hating the honoree. Or mocking Chow for his choice of honorary captain because in the end it’s the influence and presence that the governor leaves with the team that lives on.

  33. Wes'side Warrior September 12, 2014 9:58 am

    Morning, Gang!

    Happy Game-Day-Eve Aloha Friday!

We better be ready and come out hot! And no take da slippah off da pedal until da guy blow da whistle when all pau.

I have my worries of inconsistency approaching this game. Hope our Warriors put together a complete package.

  34. Former UH Athlete September 12, 2014 9:59 am

With likely a very low turnout at coin flip time vs a FCS opponent, the boo-birds should be quite vocal for the honorary captain.

Speaking of low turnout, I was a little disappointed by last week’s attendance vs OSU, considering the positive press following the UW game.

UH is 0-2, which was expected, but the overall improvements are noticeable. The penalties and QB accuracy issues are fixable, however Maggitt and Phillips size are not. I’m glad to see the defensive front 7 has not been pushed around vs much bigger Pac12 OLines. The RBs for OSU are great players and broke a couple runs, but for the most part, it was great individual effort vs gaping holes up the middle.

  35. Wes'side Warrior September 12, 2014 10:08 am

I think the Sizzler’s in Waipahu is now a Bob’s Big Bear Diner or something like that. Saw some old cars sitting out there not too long ago. Was weird to return home, and find the Waipahu Safeway turned into a church too.
Sure do miss Arakawa’s! Used to spend lots of time wandering through that store… as well as Waipahu Schwinn across the street, and Waipahu Drug around the corner (where I used to get all my Richie Rich comics). We used to get aku head and aku belly from the Big Way there when we went crabbing.
And the Waipahu Sky Slide? My wife works at Cutter Buick/GMC and Cutter Mazda now. Also weird to see Lex Brodie’s not selling gas… and McDonald’s and Pizza Hut in that area are gone.
I don’t know about “positive” changes… but I sure do miss those old stores, AND ESPECIALLY the people who ran them!

BigWave – the coaches are graded on metrics other than wins-losses. Charlie has the program headed in the right direction. In any other year, 13 wins would have qualified them for the post-season, perhaps even hosting a first-round game.

  73. Tiki808 September 12, 2014 3:35 pm

I don’t see the roster yet, so I ‘m taking it that the team hasn’t been selected yet or not everyone has shown up yet. Losing 2 games in a row to Pepperdine and the last 2 for UH at Pepperdine was too much for Hawai’i to ask for from the Warriors. Any idea if you’ll be putting any midgets again, of which may cause controversy over the playoffs, and MPSF time? This was the problem last year. Some of the Warriors were small and not concerned with MPSF play and so the whole team lost. What will be the look this year 2014/2015 season?

  74. Old School Dave September 12, 2014 3:37 pm

In today’s Kokua Line, a writer complained about the lack of security at the UH – OSU game and witnessed a fight nearly break out in the stands. Of course it was alcohol fueled. The writer went on to say that many onlookers decided to leave when HPD and Stadium security didn’t do enough to quell the disturbance. Maybe if the troublemakers had tried to sneak in food, then more decisive action would have been taken by the Stadium people.

  76. Tiki808 September 12, 2014 4:24 pm

I have heard it said at the games, he’s too small and they won’t win. When can we expect to see a roster? I’m sure they’ll want to play together, but my point will be why play with him? This was the case for some. Can we encounter this again? Is there a problem with money and the reason why he won’t go in to play in the game? Why not just pick the 6 best and play them? No problem with MPSF, you’ll make it in to the playoffs if you win. Charlie Wade is 6-2 and taller than Steve Uyehara, why don’t he just call it then in the game?

I don’t drink so I really don’t understand the need for beer at a game but I hope someday alcohol will be banned at Aloha Stadium for UH games.

  78. Turfwar September 12, 2014 4:32 pm

However I may need to start drinking to ever understand what tiki808 is talking about…

  79. Andrew September 12, 2014 4:38 pm

    76.

I hope that day never comes

Do you know what will be a good idea to hype the game and make it into a ticket seller? Outside the outrigger Hotels and Resorts, in the lobby area, just set up a table and make a special appearance by all team members. Tomorrow night for one thing, all you need is a table, few posters and pens and some T-shirts to buy and a few tickets in advance, and you got a guest appearance session. How hard would this be to go out into the community and acclimatize yourselves to the community? Good idea!

This is why, UH-M needs its own stadium. Should be, should be, should be, should be in Manoa. That’s right. Somebody said it. And that somebody is a Grease.

Or should be CLOSE to Manoa. OK? You don’t see those insistent-on-fighting and -on troublemaking mokes and lolos who can’t even SPELL “university” much less name a non-state monikered university at Les Murakami Stadium nor at the Stan Sheriff with the same regularity as Aloha Stadium.

There’s a reason why that stadium’s situated in Halawa . . . because it’s just another piece of Halawa.

  82. A-joe September 12, 2014 5:26 pm

There will never be an on campus stadium in Manoa. No one in the surrounding area would approve it. Traffic would be horrendous. Not only on game day but any time the facility is used. Traffic’s already bad just on womens volleyball night. Halawa is the best location.

But, everyone is welcome to dream, bitch and moan. Thats all it’ll ever be.

  83. hatakeman September 12, 2014 5:54 pm

Beer sales is money in the pocket for the state. I sneak food into the stadium. One day they’re going to catch me and kick me out. I’m a season ticket-holder. Maybe watching at home is better. Certainly cheaper. Oh, I don’t drink alcohol.

I don’t know how NI will do tomorrow, but it seems like the team is taking the Hawaii trip serious. The team arrived Wednesday night, and will have had two practices before game time. When I looked at some stats-top ten ranking in the FCS and the hc is something like 115-65. For the hc this is big game on his resume should he win. A win puts his name in the hat at perhaps the FBS level. Who knows, but I would think he want this game badly. This is NI bowl game. A opportunity for the team to make a name for itself and for all the other teams at the FCS level. I have a bad feeling about this game. NI over the Warriors 31-17. Tomorrow’s blog should have an earful.

  85. tom-warriornation September 12, 2014 6:46 pm

    30. Andrew: we have over 100 Hawaii fans at the Colorado game in Sect. 103–this does not include the families of players.

  86. tom-warriornation September 12, 2014 6:53 pm

condolences to Warrior NY and his family.

Here’s a novel idea. Put the stadium on the Honolulu Stadium site! Hmmmm.
Buy up all the property around the stadium. It’s close to UH. Is it on the rail line?
Solves the homeless issue there too. Think about it. Can, can!

  88. 3-Prong September 12, 2014 7:42 pm

    Go Wahine!!!!!!!!

  89. 3-Prong September 12, 2014 7:48 pm

Pretty cool Sealey singing Hawai’i Pono’i.

No, cannot 3-Prong because, as sensible as this is — a Grease means at least 2 peoples are contemplating this — no one will approve a campus near or at Manoa and ablah-blah-blah and, oh, a stadium for college football is just perfect in Halawa. You and a Grease, 3-Prong, could probably imagine some of the best contra flow lanes ever, from east, west, north, south, but, oh, we’re just happy for traffic to be horrendous anyway. Oh, and, best we not think further about such brilliant notion,, 3-Prong. We’d just be moaning b–ing dreamers is all. 😀 . May as well go live North Korea. Hope they have a version of the Warriors o’there?

FROM A GREASE’S INTELLIGENCE FILES: looks like UNI DID NOT show up to practice at (speaking of) Aloha Stadium today. Confidence? Given to understanding that this is a MUST WIN game for U of Hawaii?

    Stay tuned.

  91. 3-Prong September 12, 2014 8:37 pm

LETS GO BOWS! LETS GO GOWS!

  92. Chicken Grease September 12, 2014 8:39 pm

    Kidding w/you, o’course . . . A-Joe. 😐

  93. 3-Prong September 12, 2014 10:08 pm

A grease has a way with words. A 3-Prong got hit in the head too many times in high school and is not quite sure if a grease agrees or disagrees with him.

….anyway, good try Wahine. Bring in Nikki a little earlier and Hawaii sweeps!
…and beat dem Iowa boys tomorrow. Missed practice huh?

  94. Chicken Grease September 12, 2014 10:17 pm

Oh, uh, heh, it’s not on you, 3-Prong. As a Grease told cocobean before, heh, well, a Grease can be punchy. 😛

UNI not practicing at Aloha Stadium tonight. Gets a brotha’ nervous.

Did they practice somewhere else? Why would they forgo practicing at Aloha Stadium? Why? Let’s channel X from JFK.

81-whoa Chickengrease, on the Halawa comments that’s reserved for folks from Halawa….

  96. Chicken Grease September 13, 2014 7:51 am

Yeah, only two things in Halawa — rusty and old. Bwahahaah, come on, man.

    Happy 100th episode, Hawaii 5-0.
