Updates: Jordan Wynn, Phil Rauscher

> Jordan Wynn has joined Fresno State as a graduate assistant. He is reunited with FS offensive coordinator Dave Schramm, who had coached at Utah, where Wynn played quarterback collegiately.

Wynn joined the Warriors as a GA in January 2013, then was placed in charge of quarterbacks after OC Aaron Price was fired in August 2013. In 2014, he was promoted to full-time assistant coach with play-calling responsibilities. He departed the Warriors in March after the Warriors reorganized the coaching staff.

> Phil Rauscher has been hired as an offensive assistant with the Denver Broncos.

Rauscher and Lewis Powell, now a d-line coach at Utah, were Norm Chow’s first two coaching hires in 2012. Rauscher coached the UH tight ends and helped coordinate recruiting. His contract was not renewed after the 2013 season. He was an assistant coach at Cal Lutheran in 2014.

    Good Morning Hawaii.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

    wet…soggy…mushroom weather

  3. Nanakuli July 11, 2015 7:11 am

I hope Jordan does not get the last laugh against Norm Chow like Coach Rolo is.

  4. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 7:21 am

Muggy and wet, according to the meteorologists.
    Aren’t those contradictory forecasts?

  5. Ipu Man July 11, 2015 7:29 am

    Phil Rauscher has been hired
    as an offensive assistant with
    the Denver Broncos:
    Wow.

  6. 808warriorfan July 11, 2015 7:41 am

“NANAKULI” … seems everyone gets the last laugh against Norm … sad to say

  7. Tempmanoa July 11, 2015 8:33 am

The circle of life– coaching life– Wynn joins Schramm who was demoted from Utah Offensive Coordinator to Chow’s running backs coach to make room for Chow. Schramm got the last laugh when he was named Fresno State’s OC and his offense beat us three times. Wynn and Schramm are compatible since Wynn was a spread Quarterback and Schramm a spread coordinator.

  8. islandman July 11, 2015 8:39 am

Synonyms for muggy : damp, moist, soggy, sticky …

  9. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 8:42 am

Not sure about the rest of you, but I’d rather be a head coach in Hawaii than an assistant coach in Central California.

  10. Old School Dave July 11, 2015 8:57 am

Missed this news: Utah State Athletic Dept signed a corporate sponsorship deal, renaming its stadium, and has begun building a new press box with luxury suites. lodge boxes, and a student training center. The corporate partner will help in funding the $36 million dollar stadium renovation:

    Old School Dave:
I think Utah State needs to build an elevator.
We almost lost RK on the long walk up to the press box.

  12. Old School Dave July 11, 2015 9:11 am

Stephen: I heard about RK’s experience with the press box (if you want to call it that) at USU. I remember when UH played Utah in 98 at their brand new stadium and the elevator to their press box was broken.

  13. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 9:19 am

Then again, Bob Hogue is (was) pretty fit, and he was huffin’ and puffin’ when he had to sprint to the press box at Air Force.
    Altitude is real.

  14. papajoe2 July 11, 2015 10:16 am

OSDave, I could be mistaken but I think USU owns their stadium so the money from corporate goes to their school. When Hawaiian Airlines signed for Aloha Stadium, it went to the state, not UH. 🙁

  15. rodney July 11, 2015 10:29 am

    CONGRATS Phil!!!

  16. A-joe July 11, 2015 10:41 am

Kekaula’s description of climbing up to USU’s pressbox is hilariously epic!

The whiff of the air will quickly remind you, You’re in Cowboy Country, Son! Lol!

  17. hwnstyll July 11, 2015 11:02 am

From QB/OC coach to GA is getting the last laugh?
Powell is the only coach doing better.
Assistant at any NFL team could mean anything from ball deflater to video operator.

  18. SteveM July 11, 2015 12:15 pm

    Congrats to Jordan Wynn!
But the degree of difficulty in our November 14 game this year has just probably just increased.

  19. Inyoface July 11, 2015 12:26 pm

UH has to play a more finesse style of play on offense if they want to keep the injuries low over the season. Not so much run up the middle but more off direction running plays which I see Bailey likes to do.

  20. Warrior Dave July 11, 2015 1:18 pm

Not very many schools below UH in wins over Chow’s tenure. Every coach that has left or was not retained had the last laugh. The nightmare is over after this season.

  21. Old School Dave July 11, 2015 1:33 pm

Papajoe2: I think you’re right about USU. The name of the stadium was changed with the corporate agreement with Maverik (owners of a chain of convenience stores in the West) along with the blessing of the Romney Family (whom the stadium was named after). The field is still named after Merlin Olsen. Their new AD was very proactive in securing this agreement. Sounds like a good business deal for the USU Athletic Dept:

“Maverik vice president Aaron Simpson said that former USU athletic director Scott Barnes approached the company months ago to see if they were willing to hammer out a naming rights agreement. Maverik recently remodeled stores in Logan and is building more in Cache Valley, so company officials felt it would be a good opportunity to increase the company’s visibility in the area. It also puts Maverik food in the stadium, where hungry fans might be more willing to give it a try.]”

  22. el burro sabio July 11, 2015 1:34 pm

Don’t confuse wins with career progression.

A young assistant should always be moving on to a better opportunity, else the reason they were let go in the first place.

  23. oneseason July 11, 2015 1:51 pm

It looks like Mr. Wynn has a good coaching staff to learn from, and a successful program to contribute to (19 Wins – 5 Losses in conference under Coach DeRuyter). Hopefully by the Fresno St game (#11 of 13), we will see evidence of that from UH’s 2015 win-loss record.

  24. Warrior Dave July 11, 2015 2:21 pm

Wynn was given to much so soon because of Chow’s ego. I don’t blame Wynn as I feel he lacked experience to be an OC/play caller. Plus, I feel that he didn’t have free reign to call the offense he wanted.

So good luck to Coach Wynn. Looks like a good experienced staff at FSU in which to learn and progress.

  25. st. anthony trojan July 11, 2015 2:26 pm

Warrior Dave….# 20… don’t be to sure the nightmare will be over this season…remember we are talking UH administration here…but me pray ur right…

  26. el burro sabio July 11, 2015 3:09 pm

I always wish the best for coaches and players who leave or are asked to leave, except for those like Wally English and Gib Arnold.

  27. st. anthony trojan July 11, 2015 3:31 pm

There was a woman’s basketball man coach a few years ago..that left under… cloudy skies…what u think of him sabio

  28. A-House July 11, 2015 3:52 pm

how many times can a person be hired/listed as a grad assistant?

is not pursuing a higher degree a prerequisite? did Wynn complete his advance degree at UH?

  29. A-House July 11, 2015 3:55 pm

    ST:

yep moist, muggy and whatever adjective you want to describe the weather in the valley

at least, there is a little semblance of the trade wind returning as there is A BREEZE – the branches/leaves of the lager trees are moving!

what was it you were looking for
that look you life that night
they say they found my high school ring
    clutched in your fingers tight

    teen angel teen angel
    answer me please

  31. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 4:13 pm

The limit is three years to be a GA. Wynn has one year as GA.

  32. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 4:15 pm

No, it’s not a better situation to go from full time to GA. But Wynn’s a nice and bright guy, and I’m sure what people here really mean to say is they wish him well.

  33. A-House July 11, 2015 4:15 pm

someday UH football will be able to announce the commitment of a high caliber player as the young lady that just committed to UH volleyball

kinda follows on to what Coach Wade accomplished last year with getting 3 of 15 players off the 18 under US team to sign with UH – it will be very difficult for another coach to exceed that coup

dream: in the future, a 6’4″ 215# QB who can run the 4o in 4.4.seconds and throw the ball down field, with accuracy, 75 yards flat footed will sign with UH along with 2 6’5″ 310# guards and 2 6’6″- 6’7″ 305 # tackles with quick feet and extra long arms – OL can each bench press 225#s 30-40 reps, dead lift 450#s, squat over 500#s, and run the 40 in 4.6 seconds – and they will all be true frosh!!!

wonder who will be that football coach???

future local football recruits – it will be a challenge to become another Mariota because I doubt, very seriously, if any had made a commitment to be a NFL football player in the 4th grade and had the intellect and discipline through out his high school and college career to accomplish his goal – character is the other component to his success – humbleness!

  34. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 4:27 pm

    A-House:
Aaron Zwahlen was an ESPN.com top 300 player a couple years ago. Show up at 4:30 pm Tuesday and you can watch Zwahlen, Wittek, Woolsey and Reilly throw. Not sure when UH has had this many tall QBs.

  35. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 4:30 pm

They should have used a child actor for that First Hawaiian commercial. It looked strange to see a grown man sitting in a child’s seat. Just sayin’ …

  36. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 5:28 pm

    A-House:
All outside hitters are six-rotation players. That’s what made Taylor Averill so unique. He was a middle who could hit the bic. He also was a decent trouble-ball setter. And he could serve. Not bad for a guy who has played through injuries most of his UH career.

  37. oneseason July 11, 2015 5:34 pm

Not exactly 2016 season-ticket-packing news from Ferd Lewis in the SA today … “Tennessee-Martin opens ’16 home slate” … “The University of Hawaii is scheduled to open its home 2016 football season with Tennessee-Martin, the schools announced Friday.” … Div 1 FCS Ohio Valley Conference … The other non-conference home game is UMASS.

  38. kawika49 July 11, 2015 6:12 pm

on a hot day, eat kimchi ramen on the hot side,
Then take a shower…muggy hot all gone!

  39. H-man July 11, 2015 6:50 pm

At this late date, it was prudent for UH to schedule a FCS school between games at Michigan and Arizona.

  40. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2015 8:12 pm

I would have scheduled UAB in 2016. Blazers would be coming off one-year hiatus.

  41. ai-eee-soos July 11, 2015 11:42 pm

2016 schedule – 12 games nuff. get chance to go 6-6,
    and get bowl game

Good Morning All. Wish I had PV panels to pay for all the electricity trying to stay cool….

Well……off to Faibugaizu Brewing. It’s Bottling day for our summer ale.

  44. oneseason July 12, 2015 8:33 am

A “nice little” FBS school seems like a better choice for a season home opener if the option was available. The schedulers can only do what they can do though. At this point, I am figuring 5 to 7 wins for 2015, coach Chow is retained, and hoping to see season ticket sales increase.

  45. Stephen Tsai July 12, 2015 9:05 am

The previous AD’s decision to schedule Ohio State after Wisconsin already was on the schedule was, well … interesting.
It almost was as, well, interesting as scheduling Rice at the last minute last year. That was a road game that UH should have filled instead with a home game here.
That’s what happens when somebody can’t say “no.”
