UH needs these rainmakers

There is an opening for president and CEO of ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue. Here are my nominations:

> Daniel Gabriel: The founder of Aloha Water Company is an esteemed expert in his field. But more than his hydration knowledge, he is a marketing genius. Think about the thousands of gallons of bottled water he sells to people … in Hawaii. Plus, he’s a local guy who has a love for Hawaii.

> Carole Kai: She started off in the entertainment business before establishing herself as a top fund-raiser. Kai is a blend of charm and relentlessness. UH needs more paying customers at Aloha Stadium. Who better to lead than someone who can get 20,000-plus people to pay to run to Aloha Stadium on a holiday?

> John Fink: OK, he already said he’s not interested in the job. But he should be a consideration. Think about it: He ran UH telecasts at KFVE, he was part of the team that signed June Jones in 1999, and he helped organize two successful telethons for UH sports.

> Ed Nishioka: I’m not exactly sure what he does, but every time there’s a big event, he’s always mentioned in the thank-you speech. He’s got connections and he’s willing to work behind the scenes.

> Augie Tulba: His pet phrase is: “It’s crazy, it’s nuts …” Sure, the idea might seem crazy and nuts, but I’ve known the guy since he was a boxer, and, yes, he has that fighter’s focus and discipline. Augie knows how to raise money. And people like him. And if UH has a cash-flow problem, Augie always can put on a show.

> Artie Wilson: As a Realtor, Artie starts off every month with zero. And then he does a deal here and a deal there, and suddenly there are a lot of zeros at the end of a number. Artie works hard and he knows everybody. He cares about UH, and he loves to help people.

Big thumbs up on your nominations!

  2. Stephen Tsai December 31, 2016 9:26 am

I don’t know Daniel Gabriel at all. But I was sitting in my dining room, when I realized: Hawaii has the best water in the country, and yet I bought bottled water … from Hawaii.
I want that guy running my company.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

To All Please Have a HEALTHY, SAFE and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  4. A-House December 31, 2016 9:46 am

From the A-House family to all our Tsaiko friends, a most happy and healthy 2017 — especially to those most close to you!

to wafan and slugger — safe travel to Washington and Arizona respectively!!! it was great to see both at the cattle call on Tuesday.

  5. A-House December 31, 2016 9:54 am

for the past 5 years, our family has a tradition of picking the winning teams for all the bowl games

Mrs A-house was the big winner of our first attempt winning $80

2016 sees Midori7 in a nearly insurmountable lead leading the pack by 5 games, not counting today, with 4 games to go — hello, if my mind is functioning correctly, she has already won the pot – yesterday, she was 4 of 5 and all of us picked Michigan — it must have been very humbling loss to Jim Harbough — Mrs A-House and I holding up the bottom — Midori’s win will be $25.

  6. A-House December 31, 2016 10:04 am

I saw the “bed bug” ad below and it took me back to summer of 1996 when my co-worker invited me to go squirrel hunting in the Kentucky woods

we shot 4 and ate them for dinner

but, the most devastating thing was the big, blood filled “tick” stuck to my skin at the breast bone — lit a cigarette, held it close so it would release its fangs and drop off

no more squirrel hunting for me!!!

then, came the painful and itchy bites of the “chiggers” – around my waist line and in the “crotch” area — the more I scratched, the worse it got until my First Sgt tells me cover the tiny red spot with clear finger nail polish to suffocate the chigger — sure enough after another 4-5 days the chigger died

  7. A-House December 31, 2016 10:06 am

wot! the attorney quit or told to resign?

must be embarrassing to his dad who was a former chairman of the Regents

  8. A-House December 31, 2016 10:08 am

    jm—

La Nina is in our valley for to long – wet, cold, rain — even the plants are chocking from all the water!!

and, no free electricity and hot water

  9. A-House December 31, 2016 10:09 am

dang, can’t even spell choking correctly

  10. H-Man December 31, 2016 10:23 am

Happy New Year to all !!!
Perhaps best water in the nation except for Ewa.
Artie needs to take care of his real estate business.
Others worth consideration, Warren Haruki and Keith Amemiya.
Carol Kai is an interesting candidate. Plus, I think she would be great in the marketing department.

Happy New Year to all! Watching Alabama’s first scoring drive…..brada Tua, you better think about staying home!

    Here’s a bit of trivia for ST…

Koa Anuenue was managed by the UH Athletics Department Promotions Office by Assistant AD Dick Fishback when I was going to UH and working there as a Student Help. I processed many of the Koa Anuenue donations at the time. ST told me that Dick Fishback hired him at the Advertiser. 🙂

  14. azwarrior22 December 31, 2016 11:32 am

    Here’s another bit of trivia…

I remember Alec Waterhouse, who was one of the big UH donors had a fund raiser at his house on the golf course (memory is fading…it may have been Hawaii Kai). Fish had invited me to barbeque for guests. What I remember most was those brass fittings in his bathroom.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid December 31, 2016 11:42 am

May the New Year bring blessings and abundance to al who see this. May it also bring a great leader to ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue. Mahalo to the past president!

Col. Ahouse – it was great to see you and your beautiful wife at the CC. Happy New Years to you folks from Sweety and I!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  16. Da Punchbowl Kid December 31, 2016 11:43 am

*all that should read above. And may it also be a great year for my brother al and his family!

  17. azwarrior22 December 31, 2016 12:09 pm

    ST,

Since I was reminiscing, I called up Fish and he told me that he will celebrate his 81st birthday next month.

  18. Ipu Man December 31, 2016 12:46 pm

Maybe Hillary is looking for a job.
With her connections, could mean millions…

  19. Bowwar December 31, 2016 1:02 pm

How about Walter Dods or Michael Green? Both are good businessmen who have been staunch UH supporters.

  20. Inyoface December 31, 2016 1:32 pm

Dave Aranda’s LSU defense completely shut down Louisville’s offense.

  21. SteveM December 31, 2016 1:39 pm

    Is Carole Kai interested?
Ahahui Koa Anuenue certainly needs a new face and strategy and Carole Kai could certainly draw people to games and fundraisers.

    Happy New Year everyone!

  22. Stephen Tsai December 31, 2016 1:41 pm

    Fishback’s a great guy.
Times have changed. It was only a few years ago Ben Yee led Na Koa as a volunteer.

  23. Stephen Tsai December 31, 2016 1:43 pm

AKA head left voluntarily, just like how Rex Ryan left the Bills voluntarily.

  24. azwarrior22 December 31, 2016 1:48 pm

And Marv Levy says he would consider returning as coach, if asked, at the young age of 91 🙂

  25. kev-1 December 31, 2016 1:57 pm

How about someone with athletics marketing background? And I don’t mean the Aloha Run.

  26. al December 31, 2016 2:20 pm

    Happy New Year to all.
    Be safe!

  27. al December 31, 2016 2:21 pm

    June Jones

  28. clyde December 31, 2016 2:31 pm

#22: Indeed, Fishback’s a great guy… some fond and funny memories.

Stephen, with all his outside-the-box ideas, should apply. Think of it … hang in for a few years and retire with some state bennies, plus Social Security and pension.

  29. Maddog50 December 31, 2016 3:55 pm

Dick Fishback was the sports information director I remember him well-he would walk down the wooden deck of the Mobile Offices that housed the Athletic department and typically mouth out Honk-Honk! If I had a dollar for every time he used the cliche “that’s what she said”. I would be a wealthy man. One of his student assistant was Dave Senko who has worked for the PGA for 20 years as a press liaison and worked at several universities in the athletic department. At that time a Paul Durham and “Jumpin” Jack Bonham ran the athletic department. All of. These folks were great guys-

  30. azwarrior22 December 31, 2016 4:19 pm

When I worked for Fish during my UH years, they already had the new athletic offices. Fish was the Assistant AD for Promotions. Ed Inouye was the Sports Information Director. Ray Nagel was AD.

  31. Derek December 31, 2016 4:43 pm

Heard on ESPN radio that very soon the 49ers will be firing both Kelly and Baalke. Not surprising. My Niners need to start from scratch. Fire the owner too. We have the worst defense and one of the worst offense too.

How about soon to be ex President Obama. He has a lot of connections. Just 2 or 3 phone calls would generate enough money.

  32. A-House December 31, 2016 5:08 pm

    Derek:

our 49ers are in desperate need of a QB – Cleveland will probably pick Watson with #1 pick giving 49ers #2 and I want them to select DeShaun Jackson

however, a sports analyst says 49ers will use their #2 pick for a defensive player – if so, no idea who they are targeting.

perhaps, 49ers will trade their #2 pick for a lower 1st round pick so they can get 2 pick in the 1st round like they did 4 years ago — believe they had #13 and #17

  33. A-House December 31, 2016 5:11 pm

AKA chief can be a thankless, pressure filled job

there are many, many millionaires in Hawaii, but nearly all their wealth is in their home [property/land] — not cash like other communities — this applies to a multitude of senior citizens

  34. Stephen Tsai December 31, 2016 5:24 pm

Of all the non-profits, I would think that selling UH sports would be the easiest. It’s easily the most popular entity in the state.
I don’t think you need a sports background. You just need a salesman.

  35. Stephen Tsai December 31, 2016 5:29 pm

I also don’t think millionaire donors is the only answer. Heck, if you have a house mortgage in Hawaii, guess what, you’re a paper millionaire. I think the key is to attract a lot of small donors. And also to do a better job of explaining donations. Nobody wants to have donations go to paying off debts or lawyers.

  36. azwarrior22 December 31, 2016 6:10 pm

Less than 3 hours to the new year here in AZ. Happy New Year everyone !

  37. al December 31, 2016 6:40 pm

    Do you mean Lamar Jackson
    Or
    Deshaun Watson?

  38. kama krab December 31, 2016 6:42 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Just wanted to stop by and say Happy New Years to all.

It’s been a great year and hope next will be even better.

  39. Maddog50 December 31, 2016 6:55 pm

Na Koa has a website-it has a donate field. Just one click and there you go! You can be a member for $25 on up. Stephen you are right they need a shameless pitchman who knows how to sell. Those Live Aloha Play Warrior shirts should have been hustled B to B and almost door to door, I think I could have hustled a truckload. Things will get better but it’s all about marketing and sales-We now have a product again! GoWarriors

  40. Bowwar December 31, 2016 6:55 pm

    Happy New Year Everyone!

  42. ALLAN December 31, 2016 9:55 pm

ANYBODY THOUGHT OF ASKING BEN JAY TO DONATE PART OF HIS ILL-GOTTEN GAINS?

  43. ai-eee-soos January 1, 2017 1:44 am

HAPPY NEW YEAR , Blog. !!!

  44. H-Man January 1, 2017 7:33 am

Selling UH Athletics after the debacle of former AD Ben Jay and especially the demise of the football program under Norm Chow is an extremely difficult task. But simply changing people is not the answer. The first step in getting UH Athletics to move in the direction towards financial stability and growth starts with leadership from the governor and legislature and frankly, the current version of public leaders has not stepped up to the plate. It takes true leaders to get the ball rolling. Expecting the new president and CEO of Ahahui Koa Anuenue to produce results simply by door knocking down Bishop Street is not reasonable. The president and CEO must be able to present short and long term plans fully supported by the governor and legislature to sell corporate leaders in investing in the state’s flagship school. The state has demonstrated its commitment to developing a quality academic university with the opening of the law school, medical school and making the University of Hawaii a research university that qualifies it to receive federal grants. Now, the state has to step up and support the athletic program, and with this support and clear direction of where the program is headed, getting corporate sponsors to buy in and commit will be achievable. Just my opinion.
