UH football: QB rotation down to four

And then there were four.

The Warriors pared the quarterback rotation to Ikaika Woolsey, Aaron Zwahlen, Dru Brown and Cole Brownholtz. A starter has not been named.

Head coach Nick Rolovich said freshman Cole McDonald will get some work in practices. McDonald is a candidate to redshirt, a move that would create more class spacing among the quarterbacks.

Rolovich said Beau Reilly, a third-year sophomore, is valued for his knowledge of the offense and leadership. Although Reilly will not be in the primary rotation, he will not be assigned to the scout offense. Instead, Reilly will be with the rotation quarterbacks during practices. Rolovich has likened Reilly to Shawn Withy-Allen, a No. 5 who eventually helped the Warriors defeat UTEP. Withy-Allen is now the team’s character coach.

Kyle Gallup, who transferred from Marshall, is expected to redshirt this season,

Hunter Hughes, who was in spring training, is set to rejoin the Warriors on Aug. 22, the first day of the fall semester.

  3. blu808 August 8, 2016 10:18 am

Ikaika has shown to be the more experienced and confident qb during practices but the coaches need to take into consideration how he will do once the orange jersey comes off and he is in the range of actually getting hit. Ikaika shows lots of compure in practice but I’m not sure how he will be in live fire.

  4. madeinhawaii August 8, 2016 10:23 am

#3 … doesn’t that apply to all of the QBs? None have played Division 1, besides Ikaika. The speed that the defense will be coming at them, the speed at which the plays will be run at game time will all be new and intimidating to the rest of the QB crew. This is the best our Oline has been in years, too, and that could make a world of difference for all the QBs.

  5. 808warriorfan August 8, 2016 10:32 am

#3 “blu808” … I gotta agree … right now the team seems to have depth at key positions on offense … OL/WR/RB … it’s up to the starter to “manage the game”; right reads, get the ball into the play makers hands, and do not turn the ball over. If Ikaika gets the starting job, he needs to show up against Cal. I do wish him the very best because if he’s successful so will the team and at the end of the day that’s what counts …

Counting today 19 more days till kickoff

I wouldn’t sell Dru Brown sand Cole Brownholtz short because they placed JC football in California. Anyone who knows those schools knows that there is very little difference in speed levels between them and Div.1 teams. I think Brown or Brownholtz from what I’ve seen of their tapes will, once they become comfortable in Rolo’s system, easily move into a position as possible starters.
Woolsey has a lot of the physical tools but in my view his decision making was bad, often tragic. But that can be corrected so we shall see what emerges.

  7. ponojr August 8, 2016 10:46 am

I’m hoping the best for the team this year, but looking at two years down the road till things start to look better.

  8. H-Man August 8, 2016 10:47 am

Glad the list is pared to four.

My take on Ikaika Woolsey. He has shown difficulty going through his progressions and hesitates when the play is to throw long. He tends to stare down the receiver and does not pull the trigger until the DB has recovered to make a play, or Ikaika will tend to throw the ball long. Generally, he will bail out by scrambling and hardly ever throws the ball away. I have seen these tendencies time and time again over the past couple of years, but I will say that he did not show these tendencies during the past scrimmage. He looked like a 5th year senior and should get the first crack at starting the Cal game.

But one of the other three QBs needs to pick it up and be ready to step in. I don’t care which one. Just one that can elevate his game to enter the game and take control of the offense if No. 1 falters.

  9. hilorain August 8, 2016 10:51 am

ST, doesn’t fall semester start on August 22? You note Hunter Hughes joining the team on 9/22.

  10. madeinhawaii August 8, 2016 10:53 am

We will see, won’t we. In the past 4 years, none of the QBs did well in their first season as starters.

    Whens the next scrimmage?

  14. BlueHu August 8, 2016 11:43 am

I thought Gallup RS’ed last season during his year at Marshall?

“Gallup, who is 6 feet 2 and 215 pounds, redshirted as a freshman in 2015.”

  15. hilorain August 8, 2016 11:53 am

ST, NP only reason I knew is my son returns to Manoa for his third year.

  16. madeinhawaii August 8, 2016 11:55 am

Considering all the returning members from last year’s offense, I anticipate them being, at the very least, a few notches better than the previous season. If Lempa can do his magic, then we should be in for an exciting season.

  17. madeinhawaii August 8, 2016 12:00 pm

What’s easier? Improving a team’s Offense from one season to the next, or improving the team’s defense? Last year, Cal’s defense wasn’t all that great.

Total Defense: 108th, 453.7 YPG and 6.10 yards per play against
3rd Down Conversion Defense: 97th. Opponents converted 83 of 193 attempts against the defense for a .430 percentage.
Red Zone Defense: 122nd, opponents scored a touchdown on 32 of 52 possessions while adding a field goal on a further 16. Opponents scored on 48 of 52 attempts for a .923 percentage.
Passing Defense: 91st, 243.9 YPG, 7.89 yards per attempt, 13.27 yards per completion.
Passing Efficiency Defense: 88th, 135.49 opponent passing efficiency.
Rushing Defense: 105th, 209.8 YPG, 4.83 yards per rush.
    Scoring Defense: 89th, 30.7 PPG.
Turnovers Forced: 13th with 27 turnovers forced.

This year, their offense has a new coach, new playbook, new QB, and several new playmakers.

  18. jeezy33 August 8, 2016 12:06 pm

    15. Also need to remember our DL got depleted last season even with Kennedy Tulimasealii dominating. Now that he’s kicked off, it could be another worn out DL by mid season and nothing Lempa can do about that.

  19. Rodney August 8, 2016 12:06 pm

Based somewhat on last year performance of two Qb ( unknown injury max was playing with) Id liked to see
Dru & AZ ( more upside poitental )
Line play needs help the most.
    Go with 3-4
    Go with TE more,
    Run the ball NFL style

  20. Derek August 8, 2016 12:09 pm

When it comes down to it the best person to lead our team is the one that makes plays. I remember when Colt was a Soph and he was an unknown. He won the job. He also threw up during games, remember that! So, sometimes experience can be overrated. Whoever gets the start I believe everybody still will get a shot. People get hurt. Next man up.

  21. oneseason August 8, 2016 12:26 pm

I am really looking forward to seeing how the team has evolved offensively since last season. I think this is the first year since 2011 that we are starting a season with an offensive coordinator, a quarterbacks coach, and a wide receivers coach all at the same time.

  22. Manoa Mist August 8, 2016 12:30 pm

My take on Woolsey. He’s responsible for one of the most awkward moments in UH history: the time he poured Gatorade on Chow’s dumb head. Okay so they were celebrating their what, only victory of the year, over a team that sucked worst than we did – UNLV. The UNLV coach was fired after the game. He was told if you lose to sucky Hawaii with its dumb head coach Chow you fired bro! So here comes Chow, a 70 year old something man, jumping around with a bunch of kids and Woolsey dumps Gatorade on his head. Woolsey got olos that is for sure. Chow took the dump on his head well, thought he was going to scream. And a entire cooler of Gatorade would have been too much, I mean it’s not like we were winning the Mountain West or anything. So Woolsey, well played son. Woolsey is the best we got. He kinda loses focus sometimes but maybe Rolo can help him with that. Face it peeps, if we had rippa QBs we wouldn’t have been chosen for last place in our division. Again.

  23. H-Man August 8, 2016 12:37 pm

Next scrimmage this coming Saturday at Aloha Stadium is CLOSED. Yuk. And the remainder of fall practice is closed thereafter. Another yuk. But I understand the reasons why.

There’s nothing wrong with our O-line. Our quarterback, from a shot-gun formation, has to be able to get the pass off inside three seconds. All the good quarterbacks get it done. So why are people asking our O-line to give the QB more time? If the QB can’t get it done, then bring in the next QB, and so on.

My concern about the O-line is whether they can consistently execute their run-blocking assignments; minimize false starts, especially on third and short. Success of our offense this year depends heavily on having a successful running game with Paul Harris, Diocemy St Juste, Steven Lakalaka and Ryan Tuiasoa. And our special teams cannot give up long returns and returns for TD. Field position will be important. We have the punter (Rigo Sanchez) to put teams in the hole. Let’s keep them there.

  24. NYUHTX August 8, 2016 12:43 pm

As always, we will need lots of QBs.

  25. jeezy33 August 8, 2016 1:50 pm

    21. Agree. Very awkward and weird moment. Dont remind us. lol

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2016 2:33 pm

    haka –

    “Sleeper grail” hmmmmm… 😉

Be patient with the process, have faith in our players, and trust the coaches’ decisions. For them to have two newcomers in the QB mix means we have a great selection to choose from. It will be what it will be. This is a season of change – expect the unexpected.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  27. Da Punchbowl Kid August 8, 2016 2:36 pm

Lovin’ all the analyseseseses. Makes things all the more interesting. Mahalo gangeez! I too understand why the practices will be closed. Keep them guessing then – BAM!
    Bust hard on the Bears…

  28. madeinhawaii August 8, 2016 2:39 pm

Besides secrecy, keeping the practice closed for the last two weeks allows the players to focus on their assignments without added distraction — after all, this is their first go round under the current coaching staff. They will need to stay focused and polish the script.

  29. diamonds808 August 8, 2016 3:14 pm

I know we’re all excited about Hawaii football but just saw this on the MSN site – our future opponent Arizona’s center died in his sleep. Only 22 years old. condolences to his family.

University of Arizona offensive lineman Zach Hemmila died overnight as he slept, the school announced Monday. He was 22.

  30. 808warriorfan August 8, 2016 3:22 pm

#17 “jeezy33” … probably the biggest reason the “D” was gassed in the 2nd half of the season was way too many 3 and outs by the Offense and the whole team was probably demoralized by then. Hopefully some depth and luck in the injury dept. will be on our side

#18 “Rodney” … your last 3 ideas … Norm tried that and it didn’t work

Heck let’s all just support “Rolo” and the team, hope for a team that will give it their all together for 60 mins, and let see where it takes us … like “Rolo” said … “we were great once, we can be great again” … and that “once” wasn’t too long ago.
I remember last year Norm touted the “Senior Leadership” then Chris Naeole stripped them of their titles. Be interesting to see who the Captains will be this year.

Keep the Faith my fellow ‘Bow Fans … can’t wait for the season to start

Kifi you around??! We need an oline analysis???!

  32. Arcumfortis August 8, 2016 4:27 pm

I have some “tempered” optimism about the coming season. I will not be surprised if are a below 500 team and will be pleasantly surprised and grateful if we are an above 500 team. What I really hope is that we are not a boring team . The last four years were terrible in that regard. I can’t take anymore of the same. So let it roll Rolo and let’s have some fun and excitement again.

  33. Ipu Man August 8, 2016 4:33 pm

    It would be kinda neat
for someone with the name Aaron
    (Zwahlen) to beat Cal…

  34. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2016 4:58 pm

There’s an exemption to the transfer/redshirt rule if a player was not a preferred walk-on at both schools. It appears that Gallup doesn’t meet that exemption and will have to redshirt this year.

  35. Duster August 8, 2016 5:06 pm

I trust Rolo to decide on who gives us the best chance to win at QB and to scheme for that QB’s strengths. If it’s Ikaika, so be it. I’ll be all in no matter who Rolo gives the keys to the offense to.

  36. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2016 5:24 pm

Brownholtz has an unconventional side-arm motion.
Then again, there was another UH quarterback who had the same hitch. I think Colt Brennan did OK.

  37. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2016 5:34 pm

Everybody is compared to somebody. Here’s a shot:
    > Ikaika Woolsey and Bryant Moniz
    > Dru Brown and Shane Austin
    > Aaron Zwahlen and Dan Robinson
    > Beau Reilly and Jared Flint/Brent Rausch
    > Cole Brownholtz and Tim Carey
    > Cole McDonald and Nick Rolovich
    > Kyle Gallup and Mike Stennis
    > Hunter Hughes and Jason Wieldon

  38. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2016 5:42 pm

    While we’re at it:
    > Steven Lakalaka and Afatia Thompson
    > Paul Harris and Gary Allen
    > Mel Davis and Brett Washington
    > Diocemy Saint Juste and Michael Brewster
    > Genta Ito and Richard Higa
    > Ryan Tuiasoa and Richard Stevenson

  39. z August 8, 2016 6:16 pm

If Kyle is like Mike Stennis play him already. I like Ryan kinda like Nuu. I keep hearing that we got qbs that can run and that we got good runningbacks. Flexbone already. Got to keep our defense off of the field. We have been wearing them down early in the season.

  40. Jeezy33 August 8, 2016 7:03 pm

    30. I agree with you there but it seems like the DL was just gassed the final half of the season even in the first 2 quarters.. Air Force didn’t even punt it seemed like. I also remember San Jose scoring at will and Fresno st (awful offense) moving the rock easily on our d.

Our dl really needed KT and Muti this year.

  41. Jeezy33 August 8, 2016 7:04 pm

Brownholtz has a hitch. But his issue isn’t his hitch. It’s his footwork. Needs to drive off his back foot, not bounce.

  42. A-House August 8, 2016 7:17 pm

all the “technicalities” of a QB – why change it if it works?

reminds me of one Derek Tatsuno who had a wicked 3/4 motion that was so effective, yet the Japanese coaches forced him into a straight up motion which ruined his arm

are coaches always RIGHT?????????? or do they think they are right????????

i hope KT gets another chance to return to UH football as an active player — jmho

  43. Jeezy33 August 8, 2016 7:22 pm

    43. Key word – if

I dunno about you but nothing has worked at qb in the last 5 years. These jc kids are young and raw but have upside to improve. But every small detail from playbook to mechanics will matter. Footwork is very important

  44. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2016 7:31 pm

The good thing is these aren’t typical JC transfers. Both have four years to play three seasons. I like the one-and-done JC guys. I think RJ Hollis is a good example.

  45. Stephen Tsai August 8, 2016 7:33 pm

Rolo said Brownholtz wasn’t very relaxed last week. He’ll get another chance this week.

  46. Chicken Grease August 8, 2016 9:29 pm

    Stephen, #45…..
    I Like
    or
    Unlike??????

  50. letsgowarriors August 9, 2016 7:20 am

BW, i think he means one and done at the JC level so they have 3 years at D1. like RJ Hollis and the 2 QBs. similarly, Colt, Veikune, Moniz, etc.

  51. Ipu Man August 9, 2016 7:21 am

I would not compare Ikaika Woolsey with Bryant Moniz.
Ikaika can scramble but cannot heave it down the field
not knowing where his receiver doth trot. Moniz knew
where his receiver could be even tho he might not be there
yet. And he wasn’t afraid to thread the needle.

  52. Ipu Man August 9, 2016 7:29 am

I would compare Ikaika tho with Michael Carter…

  53. BigWave96744 August 9, 2016 8:10 am

    Mahalo LGW.
I thought he liked one and done guys from JC, like Attrice Brooks

  54. BigWave96744 August 9, 2016 8:17 am

Michael Carter is in a class of his own. Knew when to pass, pitch or tuck it in and take huge hits. Easily in the top 3 QBs in Hawaii history.

  55. BigWave96744 August 9, 2016 8:49 am

Not to compare, this would make for a great storyline at the Arizona.

Ikaika Woolsey vs Jarrett Pakelo Kahanuolaokalani Solomon

2 Native Hawaiian QBs raised in the mainland but roots from Oahu

  56. H-Man August 9, 2016 8:57 am

I too was going to comment on ST’s #45, but JC transfers are not typically one-and-done players. One-and-done players are like Chris Posa who graduates in three and with one year of playing eligibility, is able to transfer to another D1 school without having to sit a year. So the comment ” I like the one-and-done JC guys” is a strange one. Sorry ST.

  57. BigWave96744 August 9, 2016 9:17 am

Or you could be the Holy Grail like Cam Newton, one and done and head to the NFL

  58. BigWave96744 August 9, 2016 9:19 am

I still wonder what would have happened if Max Wittek graduated from SC and had 2 to play 2 at Hawaii.

  59. jeezy33 August 9, 2016 9:50 am

    52. Just because one comparison is way off doesn’t mean you HAVE TO find someone to compare Ikaika Woolsey to that may be further off. LOL. IW is a career 49% passer with 18 TDs and 22 INTs.
Comparing Michael Carter and Moniz are like extreme opposites. Carter has like 2500 yards rushing compared to Ikaika 360. I remember Norm Chow would design run plays for Ikaika early on and he would fumble the snaps or C would hike the ball while WR was still in motion and hit the WR and not the QB. Moniz threw for 5000 yards in 1 year so IW isn’t even in the same galaxy as a passer the Moniz was.

  60. jeezy33 August 9, 2016 9:50 am

    58. Absolutely no difference. The guy just wasn’t good once the lights came on and defenses showed different looks.

  61. jeezy33 August 9, 2016 9:52 am

    56. Not strange at all. 1 year at JC and done because qualifiers out of high school. Pretty simple. Or you can be smart like Jordan Agasiva and dominate in year 1, get AA in year 2 but redshirt so you have 3 years of eligibility.

  62. Boolakanaka August 9, 2016 10:07 am

Gotta agree with Jeezy on this one…no comparison at between MC and IW. While IW does exhibit some wheels, MC was a straight G. I am not sure one can use the term “down hill runner” for a QB, but MC comes close and he ran angry, and moreover was incredibly effective.

  63. Boolakanaka August 9, 2016 10:07 am

Jeezy, whats the early 411 on the oline??

  64. ponojr August 9, 2016 10:23 am
