UH football: It’s ‘Go’ time

A few days ago, head coach Nick Rolovich decided he wanted to use the Pokemon Go craze as a way to bring together UH and the community.

Rolovich consulted with his kids and players, notably Marcus Kemp, Samson Anguay, Steven Lakalaka and Zach Wilson, then planned a Pokemon hunt on the Manoa campus. Rolovich spread the word through tweets and e-cards. He alerted the media. He also gained clearance with Campus Security. Yes, even virtual events require navigating red tape.

The result was a two-hour hunt that drew dozens of players, coaches, staffers, kids, parents and pets. The hunt began at Ching field, then extended to the areas outside Kennedy Theater and the East West Center, before leading to the Warrior Recreation Center. Some hunters participated in parts of the event; several stayed all the way.

Rolovich, wearing an Indiana Jones-like hat and carrying an Inspector Clouseau magnifying glass, passed out his entire supply of 45 youth-sized “Live Aloha, Play Warrior” shirts. He also gave out UH stickers to kids and 2016 schedule cards to adults.

Although I don’t really understand the Pokemon craze, this seems like the kind of activity that will pay dividends down the line. I respect the fact that Coach Rolo is going out of his way not only for team building but also trying to regain the support of the community. I applaud he and the players for conducting this activity.

#3 … “WARRIORNY” … I don’t understand it either … totally agree w/ you. Our “former HC” would have NEVER done this … This is a great example of how “Rolo” is relating to the players … Whoever said “Championships are won in the offseason” knew what they were talking about … this is just a small example of that …

NorthShoreFan’s Tsai-ko t-shirt order (UH football via Na Koa) pickup is today from noon – 2:00 pm at Club Genji. Stop by and say hi if you are in the area.

This is how you build the fan base.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
I grew up with Tookie Evans and Sheriff Ken and of course, Bozo the Clown. They had no apps but plenty charisma to keep kids glued to the tube. You had one in your home if you were lucky, otherwise you go over to the neighbors. Now even little kids have a tube (phone) stuck in their face. Next up is virtual reality and we will have people walking around like the “Walking Dead” playing some game with VR goggles stuck on their face.

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

Different Coaches, different styles but like the fact that Rolo is pressing the right buttons PR-wise.
Great story this AM in the SA. Any recruit from U. Alabama is always welcomed.

LOL at the photo of Kemp and the little boy. My wife thought it was adorable. Kudos to Rolo for organizing these kinds of activities to help the community reconnect with the program.

Love it. No matter how old we get, there’s always a little bit of kid in all of us. I’m da Punchbowl Kid and I approve this activity.

great sale n marketing by the coach… now if sumone in the sales n marketing dept takes a hint n learns how to get people involved…wonder if ne one was even there from their staff..or the ad…or ne one from KOA giving moral support ??

    shirts n stickers.. …way to go…kids n adults will treasure that…

if sales n marketing had ne smarts… could have given away 4 or 5 tickets to game of choice to the ones that finish.. n if more than one drawing… maybe would have tweaked more interest n more participants…??

shows me he has a innovative mind… will make a very good coach…

CARPE DIEM….he did….seems like to many there should have done the same…unless they did…but st

SteveM: Did I order one? If so, what was the cost? I know I committed to something on the blog but “old-timers” disease is seting in….gomen’

  15. 3-Prong July 17, 2016 8:46 pm

Also SteveM, how do you get to your Road Warrior site?

  16. SteveM July 17, 2016 10:39 pm

    RE: #14 & 15
3-Prong — I have a copy of the order list from NorthShoreFan a month ago and did not see your name, so maybe it wasn’t a t-shirt. But NSF can verify this.

If you are referring to the Tsai-ko UH Away Game list and party planner, see:

    “Live Aloha, Play Warrior”

Yes living in Hawaii and extending the Aloha Spirit. Play not only on the field but at school and around the island. Work can look like play too.

He is committed to the slogan. A coach, father, husband, friend, mentor, and all the positives attributes and character a human being can bring to his life’s journey.

What do you guys think are our chances of Moku Watson committing to us tomorrow?

  19. cappie the dog July 18, 2016 4:46 am

I hope Coach Rolo has the cure.

It’s an awesome sight watching aging former Goths dance.

You know it’s summer when the feature sports article in the SA is “Hui Nalu comes out on top at ‘John D.’ regatta.”

  22. 3-Prong July 18, 2016 6:56 am

    Mahalo SteveM…

  23. diamonds808 July 18, 2016 8:26 am

Great pics from a great event that Coach Rolo and his players thought up and got involved in! Yes I’m sure it won new fans for life and seeing the players interact with the younger generation will only solidify their interest in UH football. Great seeing the players getting into it too! Too much fun and I love it! Awesome thinking Coach Rolo.
