UH football: Holtz delivers pep talk

There was no introduction.

But when the stately man walked into the UH auditorium, there was a buzz of: “That’s Lou Holtz.”

The Warriors took out their cell phones to take pictures.

“It was a celebrity moment,” head coach Nick Rolovich said.

And then Holtz — a member of the College Football Hall of Fame who was a successful coach at Notre Dame, among other places — enchanted and motivated the Warriors with a compelling speech for the next 30 minutes. Many of his points — be a good student, be a good teammate — reinforced the message implored to the Warriors the past eight months. Holtz, a multi-generational coach and broadcaster, had connected with these Millennials.

Rolovich said he received a call from a man who knew Holtz would be in town for a Notre Dame event. The man asked Rolovich if he would like Holtz to stop by UH. “I told him, ‘Sure,'” Rolovich said.

Rolovich said: “He gave a really excellent speech.”

Congratulations to Maui’s 50/70 baseball team for winning the world championship for 11-12 year olds. We’re all proud of you.

    Go Warriors!

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
The Little League Intermediate Division also known as 50/70 includes 13 year olds. The 50 applies to the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate. The 70 applies to the distance from base to base.
    Go Warriors!

Goal for the day: Work to clear desk of pending items. Australian beer will taste better that way.

Wow, Lou Holtz! Would love to have heard that Fightin Irish type speach he gave to our Bows.

  4. forsurftoo August 10, 2016 7:06 am

Lou Holtz spoke at my Ala Moana Rotary Club years ago. His speech was the most motivating one I have ever heard. He had a lot of businessmen ready to run out of the room and do something great!…….If he spoke like that to UH, expect good things will come out of that.

  5. H-Man August 10, 2016 7:25 am

I had the same reaction “Wow, Lou Holtz.”

  6. Ipu Man August 10, 2016 7:36 am

Mahalo Lou Holtz. I assume his speech was free.
Did UH give him a momento or something.
A loin cloth with UH symbol would have been nice.

“I WILL NOT CELEBRATE YOUR HOLIDAYS’
“I WILL NOT CHEER FOR YOUR RUGBY TEAM”

    – Lou Holtz

Sounds like racist remarks to me … A man who
doesn’t know how to “Live Aloha”

    A real Hypocrite

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS

  8. tom August 10, 2016 9:13 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!
Gee, all this time I thought “LIVE ALOHA” was not to talk stink about someone else/

  9. Kapahulu August 10, 2016 9:20 am

Wow, Lou Holtz talking to the team is awesome.
Add another name to the list of special guests that Rolo has brought in this year.
Anyone have a list of names?
    Must be impressive.
Would love to hear a copy of Loy Holtz speech to the team.
Rolo, keep up the good work.

A rookie Head Coach gets a call from one of the best college football coaches ever, wanting to help? Wow! The Warriors have much to be grateful for considering all the other high profile pro players and UH football alums who have turned out to support this year’s Warriors. Laws of attraction definitely in play here, I’m thinking.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  11. truegreen August 10, 2016 10:12 am

I’ve seen Lou Holtz speak in person too. He was amazing, I was fired up!

  12. whitey August 10, 2016 10:40 am

ST, mahalo for the world champion. Maui no ka oi

  13. z August 10, 2016 12:03 pm

Isn’t he one of the coaches who grumbled about coming here? Would never bring a team here again?

  14. alamihi crab August 10, 2016 12:30 pm

    #13 —- NO, wasn’t him.

  15. jeezy33 August 10, 2016 12:36 pm

    13. John L Smith

  16. clyde August 10, 2016 12:48 pm

Perhaps you’re thinking about the Hula Bowl (1990?) when Holtz was fuming after the game. His team had taken a huge lead, only to see the opposing team rally behind the Hula Bowl rule that allowed the trailing team to receive the kickoff after it scored. Holtz was affable and charming during the week leading up to the game, but afterward he was PO’d. “Whoever thought of that blankety-blank rule?!!” he screamed. It did show how competitive a guy he was.

  17. Obake-san August 10, 2016 2:05 pm

Wow, Lou Holtz… Just having him willing to take the time to talk to our players is something. Boy, today’s practice must have been “electrifying”. Great job Rolo and the person who arranged the meeting with Holtz.

To the Maui 50/70 team… a BIG CONGRATULATION!!! Way to go…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  18. captain Ron August 10, 2016 2:13 pm

#16 Note that the Hula Bowl was an All Star game, so it wasn’t a game that counted for anything for him or ND. Like you said, really showed how competitive he is. That competitive spirit is probably a factor in his powerful talks, like the one given to our Warriors.

  19. st. anthony trojan August 10, 2016 2:21 pm

isn’t john l smith the dude that killed pocahantus ?

or the dude that found the mormon church ?

  20. M L Warrior August 10, 2016 3:06 pm

The best thing for USC football was the day he stopped coaching ND football…

  21. islandman August 10, 2016 3:24 pm

Looked it up, Pocahontas saved the life of John Smith. Joseph Smith was the founder of the Mormon church.

How come Maui had so many good teams this year playing in the national tournaments?

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid August 10, 2016 3:38 pm

    #2- Islandman –

Because Maui no ka Oi? 😉

  23. islandman August 10, 2016 3:59 pm

Yes, must be Maui no ka oi.
Mike Thomas redshirting this coming season, for those that didn’t hear.

  24. clyde August 10, 2016 4:24 pm

There are five divisions of Little League baseball, and a team from Maui represented Hawaii at four of the Western Regionals. Interestingly, no team from Oahu won a state tournament as the other team from Hawaii to reach the West Regional was from Kauai.

  25. cappie the dog August 10, 2016 6:49 pm

    Thank you, 808WarriorFan.

    Ditto.

  26. cappie the dog August 10, 2016 6:54 pm

islandman, please tell me you’re trolling us.

i am so psyched up for this upcoming season. i bought the best of the alan parsons project. before i enter the parking lot this year, i’m going to play “sirius”(aka the chicago bulls opening music).

mike thomas might as well have transferred. the point of this season was to avoid a trainwreck scenario; a sub-ten win season would be a potential program killer. with mike as team captain, i was shooting for 15-17 wins.

  27. AllG August 10, 2016 7:03 pm

    23. Good to hear Mike Thomas redshirting smart move on his part

  28. whitey August 10, 2016 7:04 pm

Congratulations to the Maui Pony baseball team. Tho they lost the world championship game to Taipei, they did an excellent job. Way to go. Maui no ka oi.

  29. islandman August 10, 2016 7:19 pm

No worries, Wahine ranked No. 6 in Volleyball preseason. Oops, Mitchum injured her left hand.

  30. A-House August 10, 2016 7:21 pm

why is Mike Thomas red shirting in 2016-17?

he thinks there will be NO post season because of the NCAA? that would be, IMHO, kinda selfish

  31. A-House August 10, 2016 7:23 pm

didn’t she injure her right hand last season?

    hope it’s not serious!

  32. NotNasti August 10, 2016 7:25 pm

Mike Thomas will have surgery on his wrist.

  33. A-House August 10, 2016 7:30 pm

I hope that KT will have a chance to rejoin the team

like his attorney says, if the Judge rules in his favor, there would be NO breaking of the “athlete student code”

it all depends on “how” you read each word of the sentence — damn, never did like English!!!

  34. A-House August 10, 2016 7:36 pm

    #32 – darn good reason to red-shirt!!

which means UH will start 5 “new” players — pre-season training and training camp will be very interesting with so many vying for a starter role

  35. A-House August 10, 2016 7:39 pm

YES, congrats to the Maui 50/70 baseball team!!! Word Champs!!!

    way to represent Hawaii!!!

  36. burro sabio August 10, 2016 9:34 pm

    Counselors Mui, NotNasti, et al,
When is a deferred plea actually dropped from a person’s criminal record. Is there not a period of time that the individual has to stay out of trouble before it goes away?

  37. LizKauai August 11, 2016 7:12 am

Yea! I have a place to watch Warrior footballl. My friend Kazue, now 93 years old, has cable and is subscribing to PPV.
You think that is not a big deal? Well, there are no public locations that I know of between Waimea and Lihue that offer UH Football.
    Go, Rainbow Warriors!

  38. tom August 11, 2016 8:08 am

    burro sabio re #36
    yes.

  39. Ipu Man August 11, 2016 8:12 am

Way to go all the youth little league baseball players.
You are amazing. Kudos to your coaches, too.
And, oh yes, your moms and pops. 🙂

  40. Ipu Man August 11, 2016 8:14 am

KT was an innocent youth once. Then he met woman…

  41. Ipu Man August 11, 2016 8:16 am

Hope he turns himself around and forgives his
girlfriend and she in turn forgives him. And then,
just in time for Michigan, he joins the team and
takes out his frustrations on them. If a man repents
    we MUST forgive him. 🙂

  42. NorthShoreFan August 11, 2016 11:13 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Me thinks KT is done. Hopefully he can get a free agent deal for a try out.
Code seems specific as far as plea or deferring. Seems it doesn’t matter if judge makes a deal. As long as you did the deed, you pay the price…according to the codes.

If KT can get reinstated, it would be GREAT!

Thought some Kauai hotels showed UH games. Maybe Jett’s restaurant..

  43. NorthShoreFan August 11, 2016 11:14 am

Got a had written Thank You note from Coach Rolo. Thanking Tsaikos for the shirts we ordered. Class dude!
