UH football: Doing more with less

Because of injuries, suspensions and circumstances, the student-teacher ratio has narrowed in recent football practices.

The Warriors list 89 players on their spring roster. For yesterday’s practice, there were 15 players who were not available for contact drills because of medical and disciplinary reasons. In addition, six special-team players worked on their crafts at Ching field. leaving 68 players to practice on the grass field.

On the Warriors’ hopeful side, no serious injury was incurred during the first 10 practices of spring training. All of the ailing players are expected to be healthy for the start of training camp in August.

The shortages also opened the way for several players, such as linebackers Russell Williams and Malachi Mageo, to earn significant reps with the first-team defense. The defensive and offensive linemen also have benefitted from additional work.

Good morning all. Looks like it’s going to be a nice day. Going golfing.

  2. PONO April 20, 2016 8:02 am

Are there other guys who are suspended beside KT and KG?

  3. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2016 8:07 am

I was told yesterday there’s a guy who’s not participating because of a non-injury reason. I don’t know if it’s personal or academic or disciplinary. He should be available for training camp. I think.
Hey, I’m just trying to make sure I don’t overheat in practice or get hit in the chest by a ball. My chest bones are 75 percent healed.

  4. Ipu Man April 20, 2016 8:13 am

I guess we should NOT hug Tsai if we see him, huh?

  5. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2016 8:15 am

    Ipu Man:
Well, we can do the butterfly half-hug.
Then again, if I’m choking on food โ€” or my words โ€” Heimlich away!

  6. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2016 8:18 am

I just Google’d it, and apparently I don’t know what a butterfly hug is.
I thought it was that one-handed hug, where the arm flaps, like a butterfly’s wing.
    Nope.
A video said it’s that self-hug, sort of Rain Man-ish.
We need to do more research on safe hugging.

  7. Ipu Man April 20, 2016 8:19 am

UH ought to invite videos from Ukrain and Serbia big basketball players—for football ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2016 8:20 am

By the way, since I have the podium: What’s going on Thursday night at UH’s sand volleyball court?
    Is there a party?
    Luau?
And if it’s a party, do we have to call it a sand party instead of a beach party?

  9. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2016 8:22 am

    Ipu Man:
I thought Zach Radner, who’s about 6-8, would have been a good UH football prospect. His father and grand-father supposedly played pro ball.
Radner quit the volleyball team last summer to focus on his studies. Sheesh. Some people just can’t balance a full engineering curriculum and full devotion to a Division I sport.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
like they say…one mans troubles, leads to another mans gains…next man up!
Hey ST may be instead of hugging, just kiss em!….lol!
numbers look thin for spring ball. fall camp will be bigger and hopefully better.
good that the 2’s and 3’s get lot of reps.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  13. H-Man April 20, 2016 10:17 am

ST, can you confirm Saturday’s football practice will begin at 11 am?
Also surprised to learn that Megan Huff intends to transfer, especially after the success of the Wahine basketball team.

1 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins

  15. legistlature April 20, 2016 11:47 am

You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devilโ€”the commander of the powers in the unseen world.* He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.

  16. legistlature April 20, 2016 11:47 am

3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

ST, we have attempted both a cordial and polite refrain from overtly religious posts, some which appear in such a non sequitur fashion, can we ask your direction and edits in this regard?

    Much thanks in advance….

  20. Bowwar April 20, 2016 12:59 pm

#19: I consider myself a God fearing man, but the posts you reference are simply “Bo0rish” & overbearing. There are other forums to express our religious beliefs, so let’s stick to Warrior football.

  21. NotNasti April 20, 2016 1:24 pm

Acknowledgement is fuel to Legistlature’s fire. The satisfaction of drawing the ire of posters and lurkers alike emboldens him. Scroll right past those posts and pretend they are typed in invisible ink.

  22. Stephen Tsai April 20, 2016 1:40 pm

Yep, practice is at 11 am on Saturday.
Bring your cameras. There’s gonna be some hitting.

  23. PONO April 20, 2016 2:13 pm

There is a time and place for everything. This is not the place for religious views. We come here to talk football. Take your religious beliefs to a religious blog.

  24. kev-1 April 20, 2016 2:18 pm

The definition of hyper-religiousity is mental illness taking on a religious nature.

  25. st. anthony trojan April 20, 2016 2:29 pm

Leisimmature, you have trolled the blog under various names for a long time it seems. You obviously like what you do. Seems weird for a troll to burn bridges, especially a troll of a God. But it is all water under the bridge. Be at peace little one and know that you can be saved if you open your heart and not your mouth.

  29. kev-1 April 20, 2016 3:32 pm

    I’ll just go to confession.

UNC, per J Portnoy, will be fined $7 to 10 million, i think he said. Roy Williams is in the clear, though maybe a few other sports may be hit some. Jackson W. said the big schools get off easy, Jeff said they can hire the high priced lawyers and he mentioned to Matlin that he should file a suit vs. the NCAA in state court.

madeinhawaii, I have not found page 37. The main body contains only pages 1-19. This is followed by Attachments A (22 pages) and B (3 pages),. The attachments are followed by a series of Other Informational Items…lists. So what is it that you are suggesting that we read?

  43. islandman April 21, 2016 8:06 am

H-Man … He means look at the page number near the top left of the download, page 37 of 63. He is referring to info on the Hawaii exemption (page no. 18 of Legislative Actions, Attachment A).

  44. seewhy April 21, 2016 8:09 am

    RE: H-Man

Here’s what madeinhawaii wanted all of us to see.

    2015-79-
    FBS
    PLAYING AND PRACTICE
    SEASONS — FOOTBALL —
    FIRST CONTEST —
    EXCEPTION FOR
    INSTITUTIONS THAT
    COMPETE IN HAWAII — FBS
    Mountain West
    Conference
    August 1,
    2016
In bowl subdivision football, to specify that an
institution that is scheduled to play a regular-season
game in Hawaii may play its first permissible contest
with outside competition on the Saturday prior to the
Thursday preceding Labor Day; further, to specify
that if the institution’s first opponent of the season is
not a member institution located in Hawaii, the
institution’s first opponent of the season may also
play its first contest (game or scrimmage) with
outside competition on the Saturday prior to the
    Thursday preceding Labor Day.

Howzit st. anthony trojan! Hope all is well down in Manila.

  46. Inyoface April 21, 2016 8:40 am

When was the last time we weren’t thin in at any unit? Seems like forever there’s been talk of a thin roster.

  47. H-Man April 21, 2016 9:22 am

seewhy, thanks for the input/feedback. Very appreciated.

  48. madeinhawaii April 21, 2016 9:32 am

H-Man… as of August this year, UH, and all of its home opponents, can start the season the weekend before the rest of the US. A possible huge commercial benefit being among the first 7 contests of the year.. and it gives our team and those that play us an extra week to still work in a bye.

  49. DaveLetterMan April 21, 2016 9:58 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
madeinHawaii: Matlin’s phone should be ringing off the hook with power 5 teams wanting to come here so they can start earlier.

  50. seewhy April 21, 2016 10:16 am

    RE: H-Man

You’re welcome! Just trying to help out those that cannot see/open the link. But we have to thank madeinhawaii for posting it initially. I really hope Hawaii can utilize this exemption since we usually burn out once conference play starts.
