The people’s choice awards

Two sort of cool things occurred yesterday:

> The Warriors announced the results of the players’ votes for team captains. The winners: Quarterback Max Wittek, center/tackle Ben Clarke, outside linebacker Lance Williams and cornerback Ne’Quan Phillips. Williams was selected last year despite entering the 2014 season as a reserve. This spring, Williams has practiced with the No. 1 unit. Starter or reserve, teammates recognize Williams’ contributions and leadership.

> It started several years ago as a dinner to honor academic achievements of student-athletes. Then there were ESPY-like categories added, with nominees also invited to the dinner. Tuesday’s event — the H Awards — was orchestrated by the student-athletes. There were various awards, such as one for Marcus Kemp’s winning catch against UNLV, and the traditional Bonham Awards. We need not worry about the future. UH students know how to put on a good show.

Congrats to the voted in football team captains. Lead your team to victories. You can do it!

  3. boolakanaka April 29, 2015 5:20 am

Rather telling that a 5th year, one and done senior is voted Captain. I think it shows not only who goes into fall camp as #1–but also, who fellow teammates are rally around and respect-frankly I think this creates positive momentum for the fall.

Interesting article by FL & BM in the SA today … “Still no signed contract for Ganot” … 3 weeks doesn’t sound like an exceptionally long delay, but I hope the following statement doesn’t reflect the potential employee’s position … “Speculation has been that Ganot, who agreed to a three-year deal, is now seeking an additional year due to the uncertainty of NCAA sanctions against the program.” This sounds completely counter to Ganot’s acceptance statements … “I’m ready for the challenge that could come. I’m not going to run from it, we’re not going to run from it,” he said. “We’ll approach it the right way and make sure we don’t have any issues going forward we’re not going to go looking for excuses. We just got to be very prepared.” (http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/596843/Ganot–not-going-to-run–from-troubled-UH-program.html?nav=5003)

After all UH’s publicized emphasis on the importance of integrity/ethics in the selection process, having a potential employee try to renegotiate contract terms pretty much calls into question the selection. UH does not need to cave to opportunism. They have other options if this deal falls through.

Incredibly telling and well, sad article about the guys we admire and follow–but, at the end of the day, we might be the lucky ones—-see: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/30/sports/football/1990-nfl-draft-class-some-thrive-but-just-as-many-struggle.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=aut&bicmp=AD&bicmlukp=WT.mc_id&bicmst=1409232722000&bicmet=1419773522000

    Congrats to the captains!
    Lead with honor!
    Lead with passion!
    Lead with pride!!

    The H Awards is great!
Student athletes recognizing each other as one with great pride in their scholastic and athletic achievements as representatives for the entire State of Hawaii. They need our support. If you love sports; if you love college athletics; if you love UH; if you love Hawaii; then there is no better tme than now to be positive and support the student athletes of the home team. Let’s show them the love!

  8. BigFan April 29, 2015 7:23 am

#4, Yeah, I found this a little troubling. Ganot came in with a very ethical reputation and seemed that way. It seems that his confidence in where the program will be in three years is not that positive. Don’t know all the details but he knew about the sanctions going in and agreed to the terms and to try to renegotiate after the choice is made is disturbing. Kinda like Gib getting leverage for a bigger contract because his team was doing well and the signing of the contract was taking forever.

  9. Arcumfortis April 29, 2015 7:27 am

I remember leaving Aloha Stadium early on the night of coach Von Appen’s last home game. It was quite a miserable night of football and we were just plain bad. It felt like we had hit some sort of low from which we could not recover. But then coach Jones showed up and things improved. I don’t find our current situation as dark and bleak as those final Von Appen’s days. Somehow the human spirit finds a way to regenerate itself. Whether in sports or in the other areas of human mess and misery. When I hear of the student athletes themselves being creative and generating excitement I am reassured of this possibility. We will rise again. Whether it is this year with coach Chow or another year with another coach.

  10. Tempmanoa April 29, 2015 7:38 am

The ethics and fairness of Ganot’s possible position depend on how much he was told before he was hired about the possible NCAA sanctions and self-imposed sanctions the UH was planning to impose– as well as what Ganot’s role in those sanctions might be.

  11. boolakanaka April 29, 2015 7:39 am

For all you legal Beagles, consideration in of the four elements of a contract. Seems to me, both parties need consistency and well, commitment. This is not a one-sided deal for any of the parties involved. Or, the better way to think about it, is what would we (UH) do to have a party accept the terms “as is”, or if not, what are we willing to compromise, and still get most of our terms agreed upon?

Long story short–unless you are ready to jump in “lake fiasco” again, and start the process anew give this man an extra year…..

Sorry I did not get back to answer your question yesterday.

You can help the champion Women’s Water Polo team by going to
    https://www.crowdrise.com/WomensWaterPolo

You could also go to http://www.koaanuenue.org/donate
When you get to that page, hit the green “donate” button which will lead you to various choices including the Women’s Water Polo.

All of the above are websites that uses credit cards.

If you prefer to write a check, you can write it to either UHF (put Women’s Water Polo on the bottom check of your check) or Koaanuenue.org – either are for your tax deduction or, if you prefer straight to Womens Water Polo, but I am not sure of its tax status i.e. whether it is a 503(c)(3).
The address for UHF, Koa Anuenue or Womens Water Polo is:

  14. DaveLetterMan April 29, 2015 7:52 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
Agree with you Boola. Give the guy the extra year. I would question his motives if he was asking to shorten the contract. At least it shows he wants to be here for the long haul.

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    Arcumfortis # 9 Well put!

  16. bouncingball April 29, 2015 7:54 am

Here we go again, all the would-be lawyers and “ethics” experts jumping in with their foot in mouth first. Let it be, let it play out – if you are truly UH sports supporters, why engage in innuendos that’s exhibits your low IQ level?

#9, it’s darker now with Chow than it ever was under Von Appen. Football was still going thru it’s growing phase back than and not in it’s death bed as it is now. Season ticket sales didn’t fall by over 40% or more as it has under Chow. Imagine, after this year’s numbers are in, it is most likely that UH would have lost 15,000 season ticket holders from when Chow first started. Fact that he remains as the head coach of the most important sports program shows the total lack of creativity and inability to generate excitement by the former AD and his bosses. Hopefully the new bunch shows more.

#10 … fair enough. Changes would seem reasonable if …
    1) Additional information has come from the NCAA
    2) UH withheld key information from Ganot

  22. truegreen April 29, 2015 8:23 am

#21 oneseason: wouldn’t be surprised if it was both, especially #2. the interim chancellor talks a good game about “integrity” but shows time and time again that he only applies it to other people

tom, Mahalo for the info. I did send a donation in for the softball program a little while back. went to UHF with softball listed. ok den, will do.

inre. contract talks, let the legal beagles hash things out before throwing stones at people. #11, boola, right on the money! and…thanks for the link. was a sad read but a dose of reality. fame is short lived and for those who didn’t take advantage of the chance to get a good education, reality hit them in the face. hopefully the NFL will address this with more financial mentoring for the rookies and veterans. a program something like the tutoring at college. too many examples of millionaires going broke because of health issues and poor financial planning.

  27. bowwar April 29, 2015 9:06 am

Matlin has just started and we’re already showing some problems with his new hire for Mens BB over Ganot’s contract…IMHO, if there was an agreement in principle, then the contract should be signed with NO revisions. It is, what it is, and Ganot accepted the job knowing that NCAA sanctions were forthcoming. I would tell Ganot either take it or leave it, with either a signed contract/offer sheet by Friday or we hire someone else. I’m sure I know an “interim head coach” who’d jump at the opportunity to continue and coach at UH…

This situation does not make me feel good about the Ganot hire…I hope it’s not an indicator of what to expect from this guy.

  28. boolakanaka April 29, 2015 9:21 am

Hmmn, seems the brownies are really finished with JohnnyFootball and are hot and heavy for MM–see: http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/4/29/8513415/cleveland-browns-trade-nfl-draft-2015-tennessee-titans

I personally, don’t like him going to such an unstable franchise….would love to see him go to a really QB friendly environment—the boys, packers…although, that would never happen.

  29. H-man April 29, 2015 9:44 am

If speculation is accurate, then what does it say about a coach that wants to renegotiate his contract only three weeks into the job? And maybe, just maybe, he only now has been apprised of the full extent of the forthcoming NCAA sanctions against the basketball program. So it might be something that has changed his view from continuing the development of the program, or to a task of having to rebuild the program?

  30. What??? April 29, 2015 9:50 am

Some attorneys like to extend the process and make more money. No offense to Boolakanaka and Tom.

  31. boolakanaka April 29, 2015 9:55 am

Hmmn, UH, I am assuming is using their in-house folks, and Ganot probably has his own attorney. My hunch is that he has more info on the NCAA inquiry, and the information, warrants that he need an assurance from the institution about the viability of the program.

  32. tom April 29, 2015 10:16 am

The Ganot situation is purely speculation on our part and on the part of outsiders.

That being said, if he wants four years as job security – and he is gambling that the NCAA isn’t going to swoop down and reduce scholarships or death penalty or whatever, give it to him BUT don’t give him a bunch of $$$ if he gets bounced.

  33. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2015 10:17 am

I honestly don’t see any problems with Ganot.
    He’s a fairly humble guy.
The process always is a little slow. I mean, Matlin didn’t officially take over until this past Monday. I don’t think anything would or could have been signed officially before then.
Regardless of the delay, he’ll be coaching at UH this season.

  34. 3-Prong April 29, 2015 10:26 am

boo: Agree with you on the browns. Too much pressure to produce early without supporting cast with that kindnof trade. If ended with the boys behind romo, that would be perfect in my book. Big oline to stand behind. He would never do it but he should pull an Eli and say where he will be willing to sign with.

  35. NorthShoreFan April 29, 2015 10:29 am

I would not want to see MM play for an organization like Cleveland. they reall ar like a Dog Pound.

  37. A-House April 29, 2015 10:55 am

“due diligence” – very important that one secures all the facts or all of the most important facts before proceeding or it can come back and bite you in the okole!!

what circumstance(s) would be considered a “death blow” to a particular sport at a university.

still bummed about the NCAA final decision that the “bougs, non-existent clas”s is an academic issue; not athletic.

how can that be if the athletes took that class(es) to keep them academically eligible?

besides the athletes, any other student enrolled in those classes the past 20 + years? will there degree be nullified?

I wish I had a law degree and a few bucks so I could suet he NCAA under Federal discrimination violations – get uku, not our Uku in LA, buku samples of how the little guys got slammed and the big boys walked away scot free or nearly scot free

  38. st. anthony trojan April 29, 2015 11:21 am

Not agree with most on here on Ganot wanting to renegotiate…

Me thinks he has a greedy agent… maybe the same smart one that told BJ not to accept his contract…BUT AT THIS POINT…WE REALLY NOT KNOW THE FACTS…

From what me read…the man is not going to hang around ne way…like a Wallace…
    JUST A FEELING…no fact….

Back in the days of yore…if you shook a mans hand n agreed to sumthing…was a very honorable man that kept their part of the contract…or both kept their word…so today…you have agents… n depends whose idea it was to ask for extension…is honorable thing for Gamot to accept….IS GREED for agent to talk him into asking 4 one more year…if was so…

He is young…if he can have a respectable schedule in 3 years…he should be ok in the long run…me admit hard to recruit…with sanctions actually in place n or hanging over ur head…but he has all returning…he has a very excellent head start…get to work…young man…

    Good luck..VBB….TEAM..

And we all have 2 remember…coach did not accept the captains picked one year n chose his own….the man does strange things…although… not think he would do so again…hope not…

  46. oneseason April 29, 2015 1:04 pm

Whether the Star Advertiser speculation on the cause of the delay is correct or not, the timing of the news is unfortunate. The Wahine Volleyball conference schedule was recently changed because of a new MBB preseason tournament. The Wahine’s last home match is now 1 November instead of 16 November. Their last 6 matches are on the road instead of last 2 matches.

  47. cappie the dog April 29, 2015 1:11 pm

If you look at the won/loss records of Southern Cal and Cal-Berkeley, and where they finished in the MPSF, it would seem that Hawaii should be playing the Golden Bears instead of the Trojans.

Since Hawaii topped UC-Irvine in the conference final, shouldn’t they get the easier opponent?

I found a new sport on Saturday.

It was the most enjoyable UH sporting event I saw all season.

    37. A-House– The NCAA investigation of N Carolina is still open, i think. The NCAA only said they are not legally responsible for the academic fraud, because they don’t want to sued along with N Carolina by two former players.

Showing some respectable tournament teams with high RPIs could have shown that UH Athletics has a rational strategy for building success.
