The Ex Factor

It would be more than understandable if two people, both of whom will soon be former UH employees, spent their remaining time on their contracts pursuing their next endeavors. After all, UH decided it didn’t work out and is going in another direction, but will honor the financial obligation of the contracts.

But UH being UH — and under scrutiny for its spending — a past year’s coach and administrator will remain on the Lower Campus for at least another month. New offices for them are being sought.

The situation is not their fault, and bless them for wanting to earn their paychecks. But, still, it’s like a soon-to-be-divorced couple without children still living in the same house. It does complicate dating. (In this case, the new AD officially begins his UH job today after serving in a voluntary capacity the past couple weeks.)

We wish the former coach and administrator well. They worked hard, gave their best, and were loyal to the school. But it’s probably time to move on to the next adventure.

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

HawaiiMongoose: Your question yesterday – re: Wahine Basketball – New request was made and was put it the Coaches Choice.

  3. tom-warriornation April 27, 2015 7:21 am

tom: I will also match the next Tsaiko to make a donation to Coaches Choice (up to $200 to the strength program).

  4. tom April 27, 2015 7:56 am

    Take advantage of tom-warriornation #3

Don’t forget that you can donate $10, $20 and up and tom-warriornation will match it up to $200.

    ST:

your intro into today’s blog is most disturbing that UH will allow a former AD and HC to remain on campus and provide them with office space!! WHY?????????

in my world, that is the most atrocious act – ridiculous !!! – even if they are being paid, get them off campus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can you see my former employer allowing me to stay on premise and give me an office to boot!!!!! Hell NOOOOOOOO!!!!

but, we are dealing with UH upper campus and nothing surprises me any more – just disappointment after another!!!!!!

now, if I misunderstood your entry remarks, I apologize to you.

  6. A-House April 27, 2015 8:17 am

counselor tom – I don’t think my donation to their respective program counts for the “coaches choice” or does it?

  7. haka April 27, 2015 8:18 am

Agreed on the x’s. Mahalo should mean aloha too.

Good weekend for UH. We didn’t win them all, but we won the BIG ones!

Congrats to the Warrior VolleyBows on a great match to end the home season. Unbelievable comebacks left the 49ers longing and beached! On to the next victory! Surf da waves baby!

Big congrats to the Champion H2OBows! Awesome finish! Winning a championship is exciting enough, but winning like they did is so unforgettably SWEET!

Lastly, the Aloha Invitational last second change of format in scoring was lolo.

  8. boolakanaka April 27, 2015 8:42 am

Tried to track down everyone’s recent donation–but, couldn’t find everyone–so I made $50 donations to women’s bball, water polo, and the training room.

  9. Maddog50 April 27, 2015 8:44 am

Tom I am in. Although I am pretty much a Na Koa guy strength and conditioning are keys in all sports. Would ,ove to see the total amount covered with Coaches Choice/Coach Chow. Mitch and Shawn made an impassioned plea for former players to get “back in the huddle” by joining Na Koa. Hoped it reached some folks!!! Go Warriors!!!!

    TSAIKOS:

Take advantage of tom-warriornation’s matching fund. Need another $150 to get his $200.

  11. tom April 27, 2015 9:37 am

A-House #6 I was under the impression you were taking up Boolakanaka’s matching donation yesterday – after he issued it. So I would think that it would have had to go through Coaches’ Choice.

Boola was willing to take any donation made on Sunday to Coaches Choice starting at noon. There were some made at that time but Boola put in an extra $50.

Incidentally, full disclosure: I have no connection with Coaches Choice other than being a cheerleader of sorts.

  12. Old Diver April 27, 2015 9:55 am

Why are two offices required for two people to do nothing when one should suffice.

  13. NorthShoreFan April 27, 2015 10:05 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Me thinks this Coaches Choice initiative is a novel idea. But…the amount requested totals out to about 63k. What is the other fund raising arms doing? We do have a larger body that fundraises. Don’t they provide for these “wish” list items?

    Anyhoo, IMUA WARRIORS!

  14. NorthShoreFan April 27, 2015 10:06 am

    oops..addy mistake

  15. nutmegger April 27, 2015 10:06 am

Did you say UH needs two new orifices? Oops, meant offices…

  16. NorthShoreFan April 27, 2015 10:10 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

The fundraising effort is a great one. The totals for the “wish” list is about 63k. Don’t the “official” fundraising organizations have the ability to make the purchase? Talking about AKA, NK etc.

    Anyhoo, IMUA WARRIORS!

  17. seewhy April 27, 2015 10:13 am

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

I have to say, UH does some very odd things. Still scratching my head.

  18. seewhy April 27, 2015 10:15 am

And thank you tom for all that you do!

  19. jm2375 April 27, 2015 10:37 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

I think I finally got my voice back after all that cheering on Sat night. What a game.

Congrats to the Wahine Waterpolo team on their conference championship.

NSF – all funds run through AKA via UHFoundation. Not sure what AKA does with the money donated directly to them, e.g., premium seat licenses, parking passes. Considering MVB has to fundraise for summer school tuition, camps and training table meals, gotta wonder where the money goes. Would prefer my premium seat fees go to the sport I bought them for.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  20. NorthShoreFan April 27, 2015 11:21 am

jm2375 – exactomundo..u would tink they would have 63k for our coaches needs. support the program because donors can give to the programs they like and be recognized. coaches just asking for basic equipment.

we name da stadium according to the sponsor. hows about A-House Garden, boola curling station or Pomai Batty Cage…lol

  25. tom-warriornation April 27, 2015 11:44 am

OK, Maddog; I matched your funds–so this fund now is $1000. Still need more donors to reach it’s goal.

  27. SteveM April 27, 2015 12:01 pm

    Good morning everyone!

Yup, if you are essentially relieved of all official duties, then it’s time to move on before someone hands you a mop.

  28. A-House April 27, 2015 12:13 pm

    counselor tom:

you’re correct – my donations do not or should not count toward the “coaches choice” as I have it earmarked for the program; not coaches choice.

conversely, what I donate goes to that program any way for the coach to use as they see fit – what’s da diff???

  29. Akamai Okole April 27, 2015 12:13 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

Wasn’t the “path” already established for “ex’s” in Manoa? What happened to the flashlight that the other MBB HC was given for his “reassignment”? 😈

  30. Akamai Okole April 27, 2015 12:18 pm

As darkness descends, a kind thought for those in BWI to be safe throughout the coming night….

  31. A-House April 27, 2015 12:30 pm

I have a disturbing feeling that most of all the donations going to “coaches choice” is coming from Tsaikos

If so, I don’t believe it was the intended purpose – it was more for the general public to pitch in to support UHAD

sadly, it reminds me of the Tsaiko effort to secure bracelets for the softball championships where the UHAD had NO funds for championship teams

  32. tom April 27, 2015 12:58 pm

The office(s) for the former HC and AD – I take a different tack on it. There is the matter of “good will” also.

Never burn bridges. What you might do now might come back and bite you in the a**.

  33. Maddog50 April 27, 2015 1:03 pm

Tom u are the best. Does not matter where it comes from but a little pub helps the effort Mr. Matlin—-your move!!!! Looking for some attention? I received a great thank you from Kim and Joyce from Na Koa and a little note from Coach Chow again for my support. I only can hope my fellow “Rainbows, Warriors, and Rainbow Warriors” feel the passion that many of us do. I am 3 months from my Maddog Golf outing—-family friends and a few former Warriors I look to raise 2K and will be purchasing about 1500.00 in Warrior gear to raffle off!!!! Proud to be a Warrior!!!!

Utah State requests and gets $1.5 from State Legislature for athletics. Boise State has pulled away from UH with its athletic facilities (rivaling Pac-12 schools). Now, Utah State, through corporate sponsorship and private donations is also pulling away. Quite amazing transformation at USU with their facilities over the past 5 years.

    http://www.sltrib.com/sports/2447682-155/utah-state-ad-says-request-for

  36. Maddog50 April 27, 2015 2:53 pm

St Anthony Trojan–be happy to give you particulars expect something tomorrow. Started with 18 guys now 70 plus. I underwrite all but greens fees. Check out some Photos on Na Koa Facebook the amount shown was prior to some checks from participants. We donated close to 2k and looking for ways to exceed. There are about 5-6 guys who are former Football players from the 70″s of which I am proudly one!!!

  37. tom April 27, 2015 2:53 pm

    A-House #30: NorthshoreFan #15

The Tsaikos have been donating money for the Coaches Choice but I don’t know whether we are the primary donors. You maybe more aware of it as some of us have been urging donations.

AKA, NK etc are probably more football-oriented than sports. You will note that the Coaches Choice (football) hasn’t raised as much money. But the answer is pretty simple as to why Coaches Corner is begging for dollars – the deficit in the AD and the budget doesn’t allow for anything except paying salaries and almost barebone necessities. Take for example clothes dryers. They are over 10-years old and not energy savers (electric bills), not efficient (takes too much time and too many uniforms etc to clean) but there is no enough money in the budget – blame the Upper Campus for the small amount of money allocated to the AD.

But Upper Campus has its own problems – facilities need major repairs, for example. The Cancer Center is $10M shy. The Medical School may lose its accreditation and so the Upper Campus has to hire more professors (most of them MDs) and staff etc etc etc

The Legislature could allocate more moneys to the UH – and we can hope that some more trickles down to the AD. But as you read, the Legislature doesn’t have that much money to spend – they could raise taxes but you know we would be the first to scream bloody-murder.

We could raise tuition or raise the student athletic fees to something comparable to similar State-Instituions but you know who will be screaming bloody murder and that includes the parents and students and legislators looking for votes!

  38. Big Blue April 27, 2015 2:59 pm

As far as Iam concerned anything short of winning the Big West B- ball conference next season, will in my eyes be considered a failure. Taylor almost did it so this new coach has too, basically the same players returning so no excuses. If he doesn’t make it he should go in a different direction also, it’s the only fair thing to do. And take the new A.D. with him.

  39. Big Blue April 27, 2015 3:06 pm

Chow should donate 20% of his pay check to the coaches fund , where’s the product he was suppose produce. 500 thousand/ the highest paid state employee and what..
And they have the gall to ask the working public for funding. When he does I will donate.

  40. NorthShoreFan April 27, 2015 3:16 pm

tom #36, Mahalo for that explanation. I don’t care who donates but one would think the bare necessities would be taken care of in the budget. ie. laundry equipment, soap
Having a third party do the fundraising is going to cost us some donation dollars, yes?
Tuition increases are a given. Just sitting on my butt the price of Spam goes up. I think I saw one sale paper advertising $2.49 and another at $1.89. Talk about a head scratcher. What makes anyone think tuition is scared or any different?

Having said that, my hat goes off to all our student athletes who persevere, dedicate themselves to be at their best and train with old equipment.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  41. jimmy the lock April 27, 2015 3:18 pm

Congrats to the Water Polo team! Well done, well done.

Nothing wrong with the ex’s hanging around. They can be there to facilitate the transition of the newbies and also make the loose ends less noticeable. Good luck to them in their new escapades.

    Keep on truckin’ men’s VB.

Not a good past weekend for the diamond sportsters but hang in there and keep battling.

    Go Sandbows…

  42. jimmy the lock April 27, 2015 3:28 pm

There should be a dunking booth with volunteer dunkees from the Legislature, da Governor, UH administrators, UH coaches, Chrissy Teigen…

Should be able to make a few bucks.

  43. jimmy the lock April 27, 2015 3:33 pm

    Or maybe like celebrity boxing:

Donna Mercado Kim vs M.R.C. Greenwood
    Abercrombie vs Ige
    Tsai vs Reardon
    Ben Jay vs Jackie Chan
Chow vs any pissed off blogger

thanks maddog… with a few more golfers.. maybe get the take up a bit more….

I am fine with the ex AD sticking around. Just no making statements and putting foot in mouth. Because a foot in mouth always equals a bad BJ.

  47. tom April 27, 2015 4:35 pm

Comment was made that Coach Chow should donates and when he does I will donate.

I don’t know if he does or if he will, but Boolakanaka does, Tom-WarriorNation does, A-House does and so do a whole bunch of other Tsaikos. They are not waiting for an Ellison, a Case, a Chow and holding their breath.

  48. Inyoface April 27, 2015 5:51 pm

Kind of a good change of pace not to have a football topic everyday. Not that I would mind it but I get tired of the pessimist (I mean the realist) say the same things over and over and over. Yes Chow needs to prove he can win, we get that. I believe this will be his best team since he’s been here so he has to win.

  49. oneseason April 27, 2015 7:31 pm

Alii Place has a bit of occupancy space to spare. Buy it, house the ex’s and then flip it for a profit.

  50. bouncingball April 27, 2015 7:55 pm

What a cheap shot by Tsai – talking big because the two people can no longer do him damage. But get Tsai to be critical of current loser Chow, and he’ll break out in a sweat and his knees will buckle. That’s the way to show your courage – any other ex-employees you want to attack?

  51. cappie the dog April 27, 2015 8:08 pm

I hope Coach Arnold gets a second chance at head coaching.

Todd Bozeman popped up at Morgan State.
