Sunday notes

With the first week of training camp in the books, the Warriors are expected to trim the rotations this coming week.

The coaches wanted to get some in-person looks to two newcomers — quarterback Kyle Gallup, a transfer from Marshall, and running back Genta Ito, the Warriors’ first Japanese national since the program became fully Division I.

Here is Ito in the Oklahoma drills:

With three senior running backs in a one-back offense, the assumption was freshman Freddie Holly would get limited work. Well, you know what they say when you assume. Holly is getting an equal workload during training camp.

“That’s why we brought him here,” Rolovich said. “That’s what we told all these freshmen. We brought them here to play.”

Freshman safeties Kalen Hick and Keala Santiago are getting a lot of work this training camp.

Right tackle Kingjames Taylor also has been impressive.

There is a possibility that freshman receivers Davine Tullis and Kalakaua Timoteo III will be part of the rotation this season.

Both are precise route-runners who have made tough catches in drills this camp.

“He’s getting force-fed a little bit,” Rolovich said of Tullis. “To his credit, he’s handling it well. He’s one who we can test and test and test.”

Rolovich said there “might not be a better competitor on this football team than Kalakaua Timoteo. He’s a freshman, but when it’s his time to play, that’s the most important six seconds of his life, and I love that about him.”

Kalakaua Timoteo III gets extra post-practice work with the JUGS machine.

Timoteo then gets in some work just before he heads into the locker room.

Quarterback Cole Brownholtz also puts in a little extra work.

Alabama transfer Chris Posa is scheduled to arrive in town today. As a graduate student, he can play immediately. He has two years of UH eligibility.

    1st or 2nd

  2. islandman August 7, 2016 8:56 am

In the 1st video, looks like Ito got tripped up by his own blocker. In the 2nd, he stepped out of bounds slightly but he made it all the way through.

    GOOD MORNING,\ HAWAII!

    2nd or 3rd/ No prize?

  4. H-Man August 7, 2016 9:38 am

Distant 3rd. Tullis is the real deal and a threat on offense. Temoteo also looked good. These two young guys will push the starters. All good for the team.

The receiving corps was allergic to the JUGS machine during the Chow era. That thing gathered a lot of dust. Good to see them making good use of it this year.

  6. Willie August 7, 2016 10:20 am

Love the process by Rolo to let the best play and not shying away from Frosh that are worthy!

Seeing Ursua in action yesterday was worth the over 2 year wait. As I have noted, the second coming of Chad Owens. He got loose hips, start & stop on a dime and quick feet like a cheetah!

#4 leron, remember Davonne Bess dragging out the Jugs every morning at the crack of dawn?

Been watching the Warriors beating Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, and Michigan State on you tube. Good to remember we have beaten Big Ten teams, as well as Pac 12 teams, and we will do it again – why not this year! Do your best and the results will take care of themselves.

  15. Let's go Rolo August 7, 2016 1:42 pm

I’ve been thinking and saying it for the last couple of years now that Woolsey must be a great practice player, but unfortunately his ‘game’ doesn’t show up when it matters the most. If indeed he wins the competition to start, based on how well he’s grasped the new offense in practice, I won’t be surprised. I can only hope that Rolo and Co. Are willing to QUICKLY go with another arm if Woolsey struggles early.
One of the most frustrating things about the Chow era was a slow adaptation to the reality that certain players, schemes, etc. weren’t working and what seemed to be an unwillingness to simply TRY someone or something else. Although there were many factors that contributed to Chow being let go, I’d say being stubborn is arguably the most irritating.
Here’s to wishful thinking that Rolo and Co. Will be unafraid to try anything and everything to right this ship as they basically have a wide and long runway ahead of them (at least this season, they should).

Macadang umaga SAS Trojan. O o Nov always good time to do dental and vision work. Costs is hard to beat.

#4…. I’m not sure that is an accurate statement. I attended many practices during the Chow era and they DID use the jug guns. I don’t know if they are using it more now than before but to say they did not use the jug gun is inaccurate.

In large measure the success of this team will depend on the health of key positions. So far so good. Too bad we lost Kennedy, but hopefully the DL will come together. I like the depth in the running backs, and receivers. At QB we’ll see what happens. It’s a huge week of practice coming up. Good luck to all.

A long time lurcher here, cheering on the Warriors from Japan.

In celebration of excellence in sports, here is the view of Ichiro’s 3,000th hit from his homeland. Check out Ichi being overwhelmed by the moment from the 5:10 mark.

if and that’s a big IF the Judge allows KT to be on probation and releases him from any other punishment

then, WHAT will UHAD and Coach do? what about “team-mates”? welcome him back? or turn their backs?

IMHO, I do not think the UH Student code is “iron clad” based on the actual wording in a particular sentence where some believe it’s air tight – I touched on it before and would like to “add” there is a possibility that it may be found “discriminatory” because it addresses only the “student-athlete” — what about the rest of the student body?

if the NCAA can rule that if a booster does only for an athlete and not the entire student body, then this violates their rule; is the reverse possible???

    jus tinking!!!

Yea Whitey… me missed you…be there in February for a friends 60th wedding anniversary… never made it to zippy’s….

the 11th coming up in a few days…much has been written here n elsewhere considering his case… but have to say….should be in his favor as far as his anger management is concerned….at least he had the good sense to punch sum part of the car…..instead of directing his anger to a few of the bodies….that i presume caused that flare up….wish him luck….am sure there is more then a few pulling 4 him…n also care about his welfare…..

  24. burro sabio August 7, 2016 9:01 pm

Mr. A-House, if I voluntarily agree to your terms and my home incurs damages because I violated those terms, will you still cover my losses?

  25. oneseason August 7, 2016 10:10 pm

Football season ticket must be coming soon. We just got our wahine volleyball tickets and the season parking pass. I know UH has focused on the big ticket inner circle parking passes, but I wonder how much extra revenue could be raised if they sold football parking passes kind of like they do for volleyball, but with a moderate premium. If they could sell 4000 football season parking passes for the 2017 season at a $30 premium, that would bring in an extra $120,000 for the season. I am just guessing at the number of season ticket holders that would be interested. Paying a little more to avoid having to stop and pay cash & knowing it is going for a good cause would be worth it to me.

  26. H-Man August 8, 2016 6:11 am

I didn’t know UH sold Aloha Stadium parking passes. I thought the Aloha Stadium Authority had control of all parking sales and kept all the revenue as well.

  27. H-Man August 8, 2016 6:59 am

And on the subject of parking, the price of parking at the Stan Sheriff Center increases from $5 to $6 after 4 p,n. and on weekends. Clearly UH athletic fans who attend games are the target market. Okay, I don’t mind paying more since the revenue goes to UH Athletics. But, it doe NOT. The revenue goes to the UH general fund.

  28. Ipu Man August 8, 2016 7:21 am

And UH still does not have a mascot.
Enough already. The cheerleaders should make one up for the team.
How about borrowing a Tyrannosarus Rex Dinosaur from Bishop
    Museum?

  29. Ipu Man August 8, 2016 7:22 am

How about a big paper machet ipu decorated like a man-eating
    pumpkin…

  30. Ipu Man August 8, 2016 7:24 am

    Or a big colorful humuhumunukunukuapua’a fish…

  31. Hodad August 8, 2016 7:33 am

    H Man

I always thought parking revenue at lower campus went to the state’s general fund not UH. Reasoning I was told is state built the parking structures.

Hope I am wrong and UH in some form get this revenue.

  32. Shoko August 8, 2016 7:51 am

One of the Warriors’ opponents this season has unexpectedly lost a player. Rest in peace…

“Arizona senior offensive lineman Zach Hemmila was found dead this morning, UA coach Rich Rodriguez announced Monday.”

    http://tucson.com/sports/arizonawildcats/football/arizona-wildcats-senior-lineman-zach-hemmila-found-dead/article_fc54e67e-5d86-11e6-8511-df23cdac5cd8.html

  33. Shoko August 8, 2016 8:09 am

I think it’s pretty cool there is a Japan player on the roster. Warriors need to recruit the sumo stables for in Japan for some lineman.

  34. H-Man August 8, 2016 9:18 am

Hodad, you’re probably right. The point is that UH Athletics does not receive any of the parking fees. But I was thinking, if I follow the philosophy that since the state built the facilities, then all the ticket revenue and concession sales from basketball, volleyball and baseball should go to the state’s general fund. But it doesn’t. The Athletic Department is tasked to generate its own revenue stream to offset its annual operating costs. Parking revenue generated by athletic events should be credited to the Athletic Department.
