Strong conditioners

On Tuesday, the Warriors will begin workouts under strength/conditioning coordinator Bubba Reynolds, who is in his second year at that position. Reynolds has done an excellent job in developing the players.

Here’s an update on the past S/C coordinators for UH football:

> Mel deLaura: He was always willing to roll up his sleeves and go to work — well, if he wore sleeves. The joke is the last time deLaura wore sleeves was when he said, “I do.” DeLaura, a former UH receiver who was the Warriors’ S/C coordinator for a decade, worked at SMU for five years. He now works for a national hardware company.

> Tommy Heffernan: Heffernan, who is UH’s overall strength/conditioning coordinator, worked specifically with football for a few years. Heffernan is putting on the Hawaii Strength Coaches Clinic on Jan. 27-28 on the UH campus. For details, call (808) 856-7882 or email: theffernan@hawaii.edu.

> Gary Beemer: He is now a strength/conditioning coach at Rutgers. “I’m right next to New York City, so that’s nice,” Beemer said. “We play in the Big Ten, so that’s a lot of fun. It’s the best conference in college football right now. It’s kind of the new SEC. Our side of it is the side with Michigan and Ohio State. It’s the SEC West.”
Beemer is a Florida graduate who has worked with the Minnesota Vikings. “I’ve lived in the Midwest and in the Pacific and now I live in the Northeast,” Beemer said. “I’ve seen kind of the whole country.”

MEL DELARA WAS KINDA SKINNY, BUT REALLY QUICK. HE WOULD BE RUNNING HIS ROUTE WITH THE DB COVERING HIM LIKE A SHADOW, THEN MAKE A QUICK TWIST, CATCH THE BALL AND BE GONE…AND THE DB WOULD BE RUNNING IN A DIRECTION PERPENDICULAR AWAY FROM HIM. I THINK THAT THE ONLY WAY THE DB COULD FIND HIM IS TO BE WHERE I WAS SITTING IN THE STANDS!

Regarding Michigan’ s one tier stadium, can you see any football plays from the seats way back ? Maybe you can.

Mr. Tsai are you able to find out who’s enrolled in school this semester, such as a large lineman from down under?

To go to anything below 35k at minimum should be out of the question. 40k is optimal with 45k extended.

Dating from Mack’s final year (2011) back to JJ’s (2001 season). Only 2 years did Hawaij average less than 35k attendance none were below 30k. Only under Chow did we experience under 30k attendance in the last 10 seasons.

    2001: 39,168
    2002: 35,521
    2003: 40,791

Hawaii is just not going to support college athletics in large numbers anymore. We just got to face reality. Even when the Pro Bowl was here, there are large numbers of visitors that come here and help us sell the place out.

We just don’t have many die hard fans like other states and we also have a large percentage of foreign students who attend UH who go back to their home country or do not watch athletic. We also have a quite of bit of local kids living here that attended mainland college that have no loyalty to UH.

Old timers dying off and younger generation just not replacing the old timers to warrant us keeping a 50,000 seat stadium.

35000 sound like small time compare to the big name schools but with the population we have plus the make up of people living here, I think 35000 is the right way to go. We will talk if we get into the PAC12 but chances of us getting into the PAC 12 in the near future is ZERO.

The person who made the presentation(Nate) was a professional from the mainland who does this all over the country. He takes some of the best ideas of what has worked at other Stadiums around the country including Gilette Stadium home of the New England Patriots.

Presentation of the Public Review Draft Nathan Cherry of CallisonRTKL, consultant to
the City for preparing the TOD Plan.
    PRESENTATION
Mr. Cherry presented the preferred TOD Plan scenario that proposes to build a newer stadium
closer to Kamehameha Highway, ensuring a strong rail station-stadium connection; envisions a
broad range of mixed and high-density uses including office, retail, hotel and residential uses
surrounding the new stadium; and, with new development, recommends significant upgrades to
the area’s infrastructure (streets and sewers) and area amenities such as open space, multimodal
connections, and safer streets. At full build-out, TOD could result in 5.5 million square
feet of new development and an investment of up to $750 million in infrastructure
improvements. These improvements may be financed through a host of public-private
partnerships, creation of a specialized taxing district, and federal and state grants.

The Hawaii-UMass re-telecast is on OC16 right now. Still in 1st Qtr.

In yesterday’s blog entry I noted the loss of parking spaces, loss of preferred parking revenue and swap meets…and the effect on tailgates and attendance. I noted loss of revenue to UH. Al pointed out the other consequence to the reduced revenue…

    al January 14, 2017 at 9:15 am
By agreeing to a smaller venue say 30k,
Yes it will have its intimacy.
    Smell of new paint.
However, to compensate some potential loss of revenue don’t be shocked when prices start escalating immediately.

Yup… self-fulfilling prophecies for only needing a 30,000 seat stadium.

I’m thinking a larger stadium at the Ala Wai golf course is better for UH and visitor events. Also, I read there are plans for dredging the Ala Wai canal? The canal is 20 lane freeway for transport boats to Ala Wai stadium.

  19. oneseason January 14, 2017 2:04 pm

We just got out from under the burden of a poor football coach that was forced on UH Athletics, and they took the hit for the lousy record, resulting low attendance, and lost revenue. It would be horrible if UH Athletics now gets stuck with the Football Stadium, Condo, Hotel, and Juice Bar equivalent. I can’t get past that every consultant the Stadium Authority hires seems to come up with the same answer. It would be very unfortunate if the consultants were constraining themselves to options that they think (or know) the customer wants. Having the medical school and new football stadium at UH West Oahu was considered back in 2001. It is too late for the medical school, but maybe not for the football stadium. http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2001/Aug/01/br/br07p.html
Personally, I would like to see how UH West Oahu trades if more academics, student housing, and athletic facilities were to be added. But the key I think is to make sure that options for a new stadium are not constrained to just one or two locations, and that the “solution” is not predetermined.

  20. DaveLetterMan January 14, 2017 2:13 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!
The state government should let UH take the lead in building and running the stadium. That way the school can decide where and what size stadium to build. Why limit the scope of the project to the existing site? Ala Wai is a good location but the local golfers must’ve lobbied hard to keep their cheap golf course.

I don’t have confidence in UH or SOH to build the new stadium correctly. Past and current major projects are proof.

Maybe they should see if there’s any desire by private interests to build the stadium.

  22. M L Warrior January 14, 2017 2:29 pm

I hope they talk to the NFL, maybe they can kick in some?

  23. SteveM January 14, 2017 2:40 pm

    RE: #21
M L Warrior — sadly, I don’t think the NFL will contribute much to a new stadium, especially when they want us to pay them to hold the Pro Bowl here. 🙁

  24. oneseason January 14, 2017 3:27 pm

professional sports owners lobby for state and local governments to have taxpayers pay for their stadiums. … http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/nfl-new-stadiums-public-funding-how-much-atlanta-san-diego-minnesota-los-angeles-033116

  25. H-Man January 14, 2017 3:44 pm

I like the current site that incorporates the offices, residences, shops etc, but the stadium has to hold 40,000 with inherent design for expansion option. The development has to include a large parking complex that has dedicated/designated parking on game days (no VIP parking) at a flat rate. The only question is how and where to accommodate tailgating. Roof top? But I suppose open fires will violate fire codes. Maybe a dedicated tailgating site with shuttle service to the stadium.

  26. NorthShoreFan January 14, 2017 3:47 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

UH West Oahu is a blank canvas right now. Vacant parcels all around. You don’t need to mess with underground utilities that might throw a monkey wrench in the development phases. I’m not convinced that the businesses that will occupy the TOD will fare any better than K Mart. Hard to survive if your customers come only once a week. Not to mention the lease rents that will be charged. At UH West Oahu, choo choo train right there. Increase class capacity (4 year degrees). Build student/teacher rental apartments. This creates customer base for businesses. The university will create the “base tenant” for the “Second City” community this area was projected to be. Guarantee Central, Leeward Oahu students will attend, instead for driving to Manoa. The new shopping center recently opened. (Projected to be larger than Ala Moana) City Hall is right down the street. Ko Olina, Walt Disney, Kapolei Shopping Centers etc.
The location is ripe for expansion.
Build it and they will come…..

  27. burro sabio January 14, 2017 4:12 pm

NSF, West Oahu is a distinctly different campus. If the stadium is built there, may as well move all athletics to that campus too. In other words, ain’t happening.

  28. A-House January 14, 2017 7:42 pm

Michigan stadium has a clear view of the entire field — can see all the plays developing when close and look at the “jumbo tron” for plays at the far end — just like any stadium

at the Sugar Bowl — we were 7 rows from the top and players looked like rats running around

  29. H-Man January 14, 2017 9:31 pm

I recall some guys calling UH men’s basketball team “the no-talent team without D1 players.” But this no talent team just beat Long Beach State in OT 114-107. Go Bows !!!

  30. NorthShoreFan January 14, 2017 10:14 pm

#27… no need to move other UH sports out that way. Already have facilities on campus. Why would we need to move other sports out there? We already play football at Aloha and not on campus. Anyhoo, very unimportant comment on my part.

UHMB starting to find a “personality”. Maybe a break through game? Great game!

  31. turfwar January 14, 2017 11:52 pm

Hman I’m guilty of that but I was as happy as everyone else in the Stanley tonight. Was a fun night. Am I convinced otherwise? No, but there are certainly a couple of legit guys on this team no one questions in Purchase and Allen who both went off tonight. Noah has been a no-show for the past month. Will he find his groove now? Hope so. Couldn’t be happier for those guys and the team. Don’t think anyone doubts Ganot’s coaching ability and he kept them in the game despite trailing all night. Am I convinced they will be near the top of the conference at the end of the year because of this showing against a team considered a contender in the Big West? No. Hope they continue this run but if I had to put money I would guess they end up near the bottom. Glad you’re a believer. We need more fans who do.

  32. turfwar January 15, 2017 12:04 am

You guys need to checkout Blessman Taala on OC12 against the Hawaii all stars. Will replay again tomorrow. Kid is beasting at DE causing all kinds of havoc. Hawaii kids with too much firepower offensively but no denying his talents.

  33. H-Man January 15, 2017 5:39 am

turfwar, it’s okay, but there is no excuse for the most guilty person dogging Ganot and the team – Artie Wilson on his radio talk show.
