Spring practice: No. 4

Once again, the Warriors had to race the clock during their fourth practice of spring training. Because several players have 9 a.m. classes, the Warriors have been on the field shortly before 6:30. The trouble is it’s still dark. The exterior lights from Johnson Hall helped. But the Warriors did not mind the dimness. Wideout Devan Stubblefield actually did his best Daredevil training, catching footballs fired out of the JUGS machine. At 8:20 a.m., Nick Rolovich told the players with 9 o’clock classes to head to the locker room. The rest stayed for the final sessions of practice.

Of note:

> Safety Keala Santiago is a pigskin magnet. For the third practice in a row, he caught a pass seemingly fired right at him.

> Linebacker Ikem Okeke made a nice pick-six sprint. He has a knack for making plays.

> Linebacker Dany Mulanga was impressive today. He has the range of a safety — a position he still might play — as well as the improved strength to defend the perimeter.

> There is an interesting battle brewing for the complementary back position. Diocemy Saint Juste, of course, has solidified one spot. But Freddie Holly, Ryan Tuiasoa, Elijah Dale and Genta Ito have done some nice work. It appears Tuiasoa has dropped weight, and he’s showing a burst he didn’t display a year ago.

> Two newcomers — wideout Marcus Armstrong-Brown and safety Jay Dominique — have earned significant reps. Dominique, who was recruited as a cornerback, has adjusted to safety.

> Make no mistake, this is clearly Legi Suiaunoa’s defense. He commands the defensive drills, directing each position with sternness and humor. Suiaunoa has the point guard’s dual vision of looking at a defensive end while noting a linebacker’s misalignment on the other side.

I like hearing about how the defense is playing. There is definitely a different vibe. Local fans like seeing tough defense, and that, along with wins, drives the attendance to me – dating back to the Tomey era.

Second? whoa….don’t think I’ve ever been this early haha. I thought Suiaunoa was a great in-house promotion. I believe if we get a little lucky, and get some solid production out of our young defensive line this year, we will have a vastly improved defense. #LegiIsLit

Seems like this was the perfect time for Coach Legi to get his shot at running a defense,This is why I like the hire because of the continuity and familiarity he brings to the staff and the team..now let’s see what he does and how he makes adjustments come game time…

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!

Can’t wait to watch Legi’s Legions Defend the Rock! Feeling like he will have his boyz bring the punishment. Just like the good ole days.

Hoping the D can gt on the same page. They will be critical to hold the line while the O gets in sync.

Looks like we are building some nice depth! All the players ST mentioned will most likely not be starters this upcoming season but should provide some great depth as rotation players. Something UH teams have always lacked.

    “Spring”…isn’t till Monday, March 20th.

So who’s the QB that’s throwing the INTs directly to the defender? Is it always the same one?

    4. McInnis usually doesn’t go to the mainland to cover the regular season basketball games , so i don’t think ST will go to the mainland ?

College Football News preseason rankings has Hawaii #85 out of 130…that should be good motivational tool for the upcoming season.

SteveM, I have the same acct. I don’t post too much here, but I read the Warrior Beat Blog every single day for daily tidbits. You can say that I’m addicted to real news (not the fake kind).

    Kev1
Actually, the past Saturday, all three top QBs threw picks, thus their ensuing rolls the width of the field.
