Spring football: Day 1

Football always goes by its own calendar. Fall camp starts in August, June Jones was born in February and, yes, the Warriors’ spring training begins today.

At today’s practice (which begins at 10 a.m. and is open to the public), watch these developments:

> When the NFL sends out invitations to next year’s scouting combine, expect an e-mail to go to tight end Tui Unga. He’s tall, strong, fast and tenacious. This year, coach Nick Rolovich has opened a leadership role for Unga. That’s the next step when you’re one of the team’s best players. It will be interesting to see how Unga responds — and leads.

> Trayvon Henderson and Daniel Lewis are not expected to participate in contact drills this spring while completing injury recoveries. But the projected starting safeties will have mentorship roles this training period. How they guide will have an impact on the widely young and inexperienced secondary.

> Before the expected additions arrive, Alex Trifonivitch, who was initially recruited as a punter, has the head start on the kicker’s job. He had three kickoffs in 2016. This year, there will be a new field-goal trio. Noah Borden, the long-snapper, takes over short-snapping duties following Brodie Nakama’s departure. Punter Stan Gaudio succeeds Ikaika Woolsey as holder.

> Defensive end Jamie Tago left UH last February because of a non-football situation. He went to a JC, became the star pass-rusher that was always envisioned, and now is back with the Warriors. The more he can do, the more options for defensive coordinator Legi Suiaunoa.

Breaking news: Shoji announces retirement with Ah Mow-Santos as his successor.

  11. barak181 February 20, 2017 2:06 pm

I never quite understood the rationale for having Spring camp so early. I read all of Rolo’s quotes regarding the switch but still don’t get it. I would really think that giving the players a longer break to rest and heal up then not giving them so long of a break between Spring and Training camps would be more beneficial.

  12. NotNasti February 20, 2017 2:31 pm

The timing of spring camp might have something to do with the season ticket renewal period and the sale of (new) season tickets for the 2017 season. If you keep interest in the program up, you might have more renewals and new ticket sales.

  13. NotNasti February 20, 2017 2:33 pm

Also, Mahalo to Dave Shoji. Enjoy your retirement, and focus on your health, faith and family. And congratulations to Robyn Ah Mow-Santos. Welcome home.

    GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!

Sorry to see Dave leave the helm but excited about Robyn being the new Coach.
(patting my self on the back – but when everyone was talking about a possible coaching change on this blog – I was the only one that mentioned Robyn!)

  16. oldtimer808 February 20, 2017 3:22 pm

#10 that’s why you’re not a head coach lol. Mahalo to Dave for all his years with the Wahine volleyball program. I used to watch the wahines when the games were played at Klum gym and at the Sheriff. You are leaving the way you wanted to without fanfare. Congratulatons to Robyn and I am so very happy to have her back. I wish her much success.

GO WARRIORS THIS YOUR YEAR!. Let’s go there and show the Mountain West Conference who we really are!. Don’t ever put the Warriors down! Like last year that you pick the University of Hawaii football program to finish last place and no bowl game! Yeah! Warriors finish 2nd place. So where we’re Fresno State? They were pick to finish 2nd place! Yeah! They finished were Warriors were pick in the beginning of the season Last Place! .

  21. Scott February 20, 2017 6:52 pm

Pagano listed his Final 7 schools that he’ll transfer to. Hawaii isn’t on that list. This isn’t a surprise after his comments about the University he made when he left to go to Clemson

  23. Coach DB February 20, 2017 9:55 pm

You start spring practice early so in the event of a player getting hurt he has more time to recover! Smart Coach’s get done ASAP and get’t into the weight room.

  24. Ipu Man February 21, 2017 8:01 am

Hope coach Rolo plays to win and not to lose.
Still remember his long dramatic passes.
Pass it on coach. Go for the juggler.

  25. Ipu Man February 21, 2017 8:03 am
